    47 KB Skullmurdered Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 06/06/08(Fri)01:28 No.1917552
So, worth noting before I began, when I initially began this fortress bad things happened. After I had finished the floor plans I began to dig into what is essentially the bottom of the skull's eye socket. When the first rock was mined the lights began to flicker. My AC rumbled as the power and there was another, low noise groaning in my ear. When I had finished room for the Trade Depot and the entrance hall the power cut out.

I went outside to check if the circuit had blown or something. I step outside and look up into the sky... the night sky had a slight purple tint and the clouds just a little yellow. The street lights had cut out only in a section of the street close to the halfway point of it, hitting my house, one of my next door neighbors, and the house across the street. The power was out until 7 PM today.

Just thought it was worth mentioning.

    The Journal of Olon Medtobónul

    21st Moonstone
I have been drafted from the mountainhomes by a group known as "The Incest of Bones". I am hardly the best miner, but then again an expedition party with such a name can't be very prestigious. I would imagine the king would be reluctant to give them a great deal of resources. They're no Beards of Rock, but they'll do. I need to get out of these fortresses. I need to head out and make my own fortune.

However, the name of the place we are heading to worries me. Nekolusân. Skullmurdered. I am to understand it is a tribute to another, great fortress. I do not know how sure I am that there could possibly be a great fortress with the word 'murdered' in it, but then again we are leaving under the banner of the Superior Crypt. A name's just a name, I supposed.

    30th Moonstone

I have taken a look at the map. We are dangerously close to an ocean known as The Fatal Blue. I am worried about being in such close proximity to something so horrific. I'm just going to have to repeat my mantra that a name's just a name, but I am worried.

Something else bothers me though. Our expedition leader, Dègbim 'He-Man', keeps muttering to himself and the other miner in the expedition. The carpenter keeps going near the two, and she is a very dark looking woman. But what really bothers me is the content of their conversations. They mention something of a "Grand Skull" and reincarnating some strangely named figure in a tongue I don't recognize. For an expedition leader he's very strange in private. He's very eccentric but he seems to be a fair man. A man who can organize this can be allowed some oddities. Besides, he trusts me enough to reveal them to me.

Still, there is definitely something to be worried about in drawing so close to a place named The Fatal Blue.

We have arrived. This place does not have a good feel to it. It looks nice, and were it anywhere else I know I would feel a sense of relief at arriving in such a beautiful place. It is heavily wooded, we can look down into a valley and see the river running to the lake, and the mountain side is covered in absolutely beautiful rocks. But it all feels wrong. Alien. I have seen these rocks before, I have touched trees like these before, but here it all feels different. As if there is a strange undercurrent to it all.

But I have little time to ponder. Our expedition leader has ordered myself and the other miner to go to work immediately. We have dug out room for the Trade Depot and I have found time to rest and write this entry. The expedition leader is talking with the carpenter. Well, he is muttering and I assume she is listening. She's very quiet and perhaps not even all here but I get the impression she's listening in some manner. I suppose it doesn't matter now. My mining partner is getting antsy to keep go further into the mountain Orders or not, this mountain still worries me and I'd like to get away with as much slacking as possible.

We have spent most of the month alternating between digger deeper into the mountain and building walls and a moat around the wall. 'He-Man' is insistent that we may be facing invaders soon. I think I heard another muttering of the 'Great Skull' and something about terrified demons arraying against it. I think this may be more than just a little oddity in belief or personality. No, I think he's attempting to raise some sort of fell entity. But I am stuck here. The mason, the carpenter, the other miner, and 'He-Man'. They all seem to be in on this plan. The two farmers seem as clueless as me. They stick mostly to the wagon to hide from the torrential rain.

An entire month and the rain hasn't stopped. I'm beginning to wonder if it ever will stop... or if I really care if it will. It seems so trivial now compared to the rest of the oddities of this mountain. The light reflects off of the kaolinite, making the once beautiful red rock ugly. I'm certain the rocks from this mountain are the same as rocks from the mountainhomes and I believe they are the same color but the wrong crevices are being shadowed. I can't place my finger on it but I can tell it's just wrong.

All I can do is stick with the farmers and make this place a home to live in. Hopefully we can get migrants from the mountainhomes. Migrants like us, not like them.

I finally succumbed to slumber in this place. The rain continues but while we have expanded the wall and dug deeper into the mountain, we have not dug ourselves appropriate homes. The engraver and his group sleep inside. I will not stand to be near them, so I will suffer with the farmers under the torrential rain.

My sleep was uneasy, however. In my dreams I saw visions of tortures, a glowing blue light illuminating stretched skin and broken bodies. The smell of blood fresh and old mingled with sweat to assault my nose. I could sense a presence behind me but I was afraid to turn. I knew if I were to turn it would consume me.

But I saw something stranger after. The world shifted and I was down in the valley, looking upon the waters so foul. The rain was gone but the light did not reflect upon the water. I saw fish lazily sliding within the waves. Not swimming, but being collectively propelled down stream towards some other place. I assume that horrific lake, but I cannot be sure.

Something worse was there however. Fish swam upon the land, moving likes snakes through the rocks and gasping for air. Loud, audible gasping as they hunted through the rocks for something. They were frantic in their search for something beneath the rocks. I awoke not long after, drenched in sweat and rain. The farmers were still asleep but visibly troubled.

I glanced across the edge and through the rain I saw something then, twelve days ago, that haunts me still. Perhaps I was hallucinating, for the river is far down, but I swore I saw the glimmer of fish scales squirming through the dull rocks. No, I am certain that is what I saw. I saw that more clearly than I have ever seen anything.

The carpenter and the farmers are out in the rain again, harvesting from the land what we can to prepare for when we can finally begin setting up the workshops. 'He-Man' is smoothing out the walls and babbling something about perfection and being ready. He's very excited to be working on those projects.

What worries me most about this group is that though I have seen our engraver speaking to the farmers to indicate where they need to harvest and he has given my partner and I maps indicating where we need to mine he has never said a word to the carpenter about cutting trees. She simply goes to work, hunting out very specific trees in the area outside the wall and felling them. She has not yet said a word since I have seen her and I am beginning to believe she is mute. The engraver rarely speaks to her now but she continues to go about doing her work, stopping only to drink and eat.

It turns out that this place is rich in gems and coal. The engraver says that these gems are ours and indicates very strongly bad things will happen if one of us even considers taking the gem from the fortress. It seems strange to specify, since he also is the broker and there's no where for us to go but he felt the need to impress upon us that we will be punished if we do. Not that I want to. Outside of them, I'm the only one that has touched these gems and they are foul. Upon touching the aventurine I felt the world swim around me. I had to run to the edge to vomit out into the canyon. 'He-Man' paid no mind and went back to engraving as I spilled out the contents of my stomach into the canyon below. The farmers seemed like they wanted to comfort me but that something was holding them back.

I hate this place, but I think I can make it better. Perhaps if I get rid of them I can make it better.

The engraver has begun to speak to me more directly now. He actually seems to be a relatively sane one amongst them. My mining partner has a tendency to babble and that carpenter has that horrific look in her eyes. The mason has been adopted by the two cats of the fortress which is indicative enough that something is wrong with him. But the engraver... I don't know. Maybe he really is a snake but he seems to be a nice guy. When we are working side by side he starts a conversation with me about the mountainhomes and the area. He told me that he's been to multiple new fortresses before and that the feeling of everything being wrong isn't unusual for some one new to adventures like these. He says its just homesickness.

Perhaps. Still, he seems to be nice enough in spite of being apart of that... group. Maybe he's just a recent inductee or maybe it's not so bad as I thought. I don't know. I'm still a bit wary but I do welcome his company. The storm clouds have mostly blocked out the sun and I cannot tell when night ends or day begins. It is a wonder there are plants growing at all. Nature is a resilient creature.

We have finished the farming area, but the workshops and bedrooms are still under construction. I decided to try and sleep just outside the fortress, under the partly constructed roof. That may not have been the best idea, however. My dreams are getting worse. Much more frantic. I saw that room again, and the bodies were squirming as their flesh was being drawn from their bones. I saw a lake's surface pulsating and throbbing almost as if it was trying to pull itself up. Tendrils of water came across the surface, too chaotic be the surf. I do not know if I am going insane or if perhaps just homesick. Or maybe the engraver is lying and there is something deep within the bowels of this place giving me these horrific dreams.

Or perhaps he himself does not know what he has gotten himself into.

The longer I work here the less alive I feel. I've been going to sleep more often now... I feel tired already. It's not the work. I've done back breaking work before and it didn't wear me out this much. Perhaps it is the lack of alcohol, as the farms are only now beginning to yield plump helmets and we do not have enough excess to properly start alcohol production, but I believe it's more. Something inside this place is sapping me of my energy. All of our energy is being drained to some unseen place below the surface. I am sure of this.

The public living area is coming along nicely. The dining hall shall be done soon and then we can begin production proper on the residential and industrial districts of the fort. I do not know what we shall do about nobles when they inevitably come, they are far too whiny and will demand rooms away from our workshops.

I have allowed myself to eat with the engraver. He is a surprisingly decent person. He has not tried to recruit me for this cult I know he is in nor has he criticized my general laziness. He has simply talked to me of the world and of the others around us. He seems to express disdain of the mason and the carpenter, which confuses me thoroughly. I am certain that they work for the same gods and towards the same goal yet they seem to do so with much malice. He will not explain why the two hold him in contempt but I feel it may have something to do with their shared faith.

My dreams continue to leave me disturbed. I have seen a mass of dwarves moving in tandem, naked yet shadowed by a storming sky. I can see only the outlines of their shape moving forward, bodies shaking in some form of rapture. Their hands are thrown to the air and I can see water streaming down from their hands but I cannot make out their skin or face. They are more like shadows than dwarves but I feel a strange kinship with them. They make no sounds as they move, but a general and indescribable noise permeates the area.

Lately I find myself looking over the edge of the cliff on my breaks. I can no longer see the rocks and fish with the same clarity as before but the undulations upon the surface reveal themselves to me with surprising detail. I can make out every contour and squirming shape upon the water as if it were right in front of me. Perhaps I should be worried, but it provides me some distraction.

We have mostly finished residential districts. It's almost depressing how slowly we're moving. Perhaps if the engraver hadn't been so grandiose in his initial plans we'd actually have workshops up. By the time the caravan from the mountainhomes comes we'll be lucky if we have half of a workshop built, much less have anything to trade other than rocks and logs.

Perhaps I'm being too critical. His plans will help us, it's just that he could have waited a little before trying to design a massive wall and moat between us and the rest of the world. Waited until after we had gotten the bedrooms and workshops up at least. I may not be a fortress designer, but I at least think he could show some common sense in this. Still, he's a nice guy. Maybe this is his first time running a fortress. It doesn't really matter, I just need to follow orders.

The stills have been finished and hopefully we'll see alcohol soon. I am tired of this foul tasting water. It's oily... almost alive and pulsating in my mouth. They love it, but the farmers and I need something hard to keep working. Though I fear whatever they brew here may be tainted by this place.

I've begun to more actively sleep inside the fortress. Still on the floor, but it's better than the wet grass and I'm glad to have a roof over my head as opposed to clouds. The only friend here I have is the engraver, and however good of a friend he may be he's still very strange. Nice, good at conversation, but something about him always sends a shiver down my spine. More than his belief, something else about him just is not right.

I'm beginning to wish I had waited for another group. Yet something makes me feel that even if I did not want to come somehow this damned place would find a way to draw me here. Something in these rocks is calling to me.

    1st Sandstone

My mining partner has begun to outpace. I don't know how. She spends so much time babbling and mumbling under her breath to be that focussed on mining but she has definently begun to outshine me. Perhaps there is something to her mutterings. Or perhaps I am not as good as I thought I was. I need a drink. She works harder than me, sleeps less than I do, eats less, drinks less, socializes less. I have only seen her talk to the mason every now and again, to everyone else she is a closed book.

The caravan arrived last month and is still here. I don't know why, we have nothing we could trade with them. I am sure they know this. The gesture is nice, but their large wagons get in the way of the workers. It makes it harder to go get that foul water and stave off a death by thirst. Perhaps that is a good thing though, for I worry that this water shall give me some sort of wasting disease. No matter how much of it I drink I feel my thirst only slightly quenched.

On my daily trips to the edge of the cliff to I have begun to spot the farmers. They are always together, so very close together, and staring out over the edge at the rivers. Have they see what I have seen in my dreams? It is difficult to talk with them. We are on the same side in this foul place but they say few words to me. Do they worry that I am akin to the others?

I have begun to consider leaving this place. Perhaps sneaking onto the caravan and leaving with it back to the mountainhomes. I do not wish to leave the farmers here. Even though I feel some stirrings of friendship for the engraver, I fear what he and the others are capable of. If I leave, I worry that they will suffer for it.

Perhaps I shall let them in on my plan. I imagine the caravans would not mind three dwarves hiding amongst many.

But it is a lot more straight forward and understandable than the pictures being shown at the moment.

It always strikes me that the attraction of Dorf Fortress doesn't seem to be the achievement of constructing a fully functioning fortress a la Dungeon Keeper and various other sim games; it is about your Dorfs getting grievously injured, crafting ridiculous items, and dying hilariously thanks to their own stupidity and random chance, then writing entertaining fiction based on the events. Like a game of WFRP.

e.g. if I dig down and find I'm sitting on water (i.e. the next level down is 100% damp rock/clay etc), is it possible to build into the water-logged layer without hoping it turns to ice (i.e. handle actively flowing water, not ice-rock)?

    1st Timber

I told the farmers of my plan, but it was all for naught. We are still here. I had planned to sneak in while they were packing up. Hide in a box or something while they were trying to round up their animals and many wares. I had planned on leaving an hour before so as to get there in time and find some way to blend in.

Yet when I tried to leave I found myself getting lost. This place is not very large yet and it is not difficult at all to navigate but I found myself constantly going in circles around places. Worse yet, I found myself passing by things seperated by floors yet I never walked up any stairs. I believe this mountain is attempting to thwart my attempts to escape. Either the very rock is shifting around me to keep me here or some sinister magic is at work here. Perhaps those farmers... no. No, I can't let paranoia sieze me. I know they do not serve them. At least, I think I know that they don't.

I am stranded here. We are stranded here. I have no choice but to do what I can to make this place better. At least the alcohol has begun to run freely and it has not been fouled by this place. The plump helmets have an odd taste to them but the wine made from them is as strong and delicious as it is back in the mountainhomes. At least I can take comfort in that, because I can't take comfort in anything else yet.

We have gotten the carpenter's workshop up. I hate that woman with all my being, but at least she should be able to produce some beds for us to rest on soon. The dreams will still come to me, but at least my body will be able to relax for once.

On the plus side, lots of coal for when I get the metal industries up and lots of gems to increase fortress wealth.

Migrant wave just came with a miner and the other two miners just hit legendary, so hopefully things'll speed up.

    1st Moonstone

Migrants have come to the fortress. A child and eleven capable dwarves. With workshops beginning to spring up everything should begin to come together in a decent amount of time. But the migrants are... strange people. Even the child has a cold look in his eyes. I do not know what a child could have seen to cause such a death of joy but that child is more automaton than dwarf. Two migrants in particular are interesting. One is a man calling himself 'Hermoccultist'. That name alone is enough to put me off, but he compounds that with the way he does everything. He does no other job that walking about the fortress and inspecting everything. I have asked the engraver about his activities but 'He-man' has assured me he is doing his job. Whatever his job is.

The other is the new mason, Ducim Avédinod. The man is very strange. He is mostly going about the fortress making walls to keep everything contained and organized as we mine out coal in preparation for beginning our metal industry. But he did something very... unusual. He walled himself into the space where the mechanic's workshop will eventually be. We did not notice until a few hours had past and the other walls were not being worked on. The engraver had his suspicious and ordered me to mine out the mechanic's workshop before the rest of my duties.

And he was right. The new mason was sitting in the center of the place, hands at his knees and eyes closed. He was speaking in some strange tongue and paid me no mind after I had collapsed the rock between him and the rest of the fortress. Perhaps I am lucky he did not notice me. I had interrupted what I can only assume to be some sort of holy ritual for this strange religion I find myself surrounded by.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 06/07/08(Sat)23:39 No.1932676
But beyond them, I have found myself changed here. The rocks that once rebelled have begun to yield to me. A single strike and the rock show significant damage. The nausea I feel when we mine up those foul gems has lessened, and that makes me worry. I worry that if I adapt to this place something horrible will happen to my very soul.

So as not to create ANOTHER Dorf Fortress thread, I'm posting this here.

I've only just realised that the modding I did to make goblins playable has bugged up the game so that the only exsisting weapons and armour in the world is the stuff I started with, and there are no town mayors or merchants.

But I'm having so much fun right now, I'm not sure if I want to fix it.

You make bags in a leather worker or clothier shop.

Cloth making is a big of a cunt.

You grow pig tails, then you process them at the Farmer's Workshop, then you weave them with a Loom then you take the bolts of cloth and make bags.

Lol, you have no excess 8x8 sized farms lying around and being useless?
2 legendary planter dorfs + max size farm = metric fucktons of plump helmets all over your fortress.
Add third legendary planter (they are easy to make) and get rope reeds (they need to be farmed on tiles with light). This will overflow your fort with rope reeds.
Get 5 peasants to process all of this (or 2 legendary treshers) and you have farmer workshops cluttered with threads and seeds.
Legendary weaver can then make some cloths. He will clutter them really quickly (cluttered workshops work 10 times slower) so you may want to make new loom every 5 minutes.
Now get 10 peasants or 1 legendary clothier to make bags.
You will have about 200 free bags first year if you do it right (legendary dorfs, not peasants).

Everytime I start with a chasm on the map they show up. Just break into the chasm and bam, spiders running around spewing out webs. And if the cats kill them, it's okay. There's a fucking legion of spiders.

You just have to be careful about chasms because while usually just full of shit like Batmen and Gremlins, they've sometimes got some really nasty shit. Such as trolls or, worst of all, the Giant Cave Spider.
