I always thought that some of the settings that peg inc makes for savage worlds had interesting mixes. Like:

Evernight - standard fantasy world hit by an alien invasion.
Rippers - victorian monster hunters using bioware extracted from the monsters themselves.

The trouble is, this isn't actually that awesome once you get past the HOLY SHIT STALKER-ness of it.

A good combination of things is one which builds on the settings it's inspired by.

Compare this setting above with one I propose, and which I am currently writing about.

The world is split in two after a nuclear war in Europe. Star Wars actually worked, and the USA, and parts of NATO survived unscathed. Unfortunately, everything east of the Iron Curtain is nuked, and that's when the land war started. You see, Russia had been expecting it. They had built massive underground colonies in Siberia. The nuclear strikes on Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad, even Berlin and the satellite states? Acceptable losses. Everyone who mattered was in the bunkers, living of hydroponically grown food and preparing the armies of clones and remotely operated tanks. The US army, rushing into the red zone, hits a brick wall of Soviet tanks and men. A WW1-style war of attrition has established in the tundra, and the only thing keeping the US army alive are convoys of thousands of trucks leaving the ports of Dunkirk and Calais and driving non-stop across Europe, along with airlifts. Trouble is, the nukes were aimed at population centres. The STALKERS (best way to describe whoever survived) have got a whole lot of Cold War era hardware. Partisans have got T90s and Hinds. If the convoys stop, the war is lost.

The USA can't even nuke the Red bastards. They need to take the bunkers intact, because there is also the Red Death to worry about. Russia is happy to prosecute a land war, because they'll win in time. But if it looks like they're losing, then they'll press the button and release a modified strain of algae into the oceans, which will over a period of a few years contaminate all standing water on earth and kill all marine life. The only way to survive will be to be in the bunkers, where the billions of gallons of fresh water, constantly recycled and replenished from ice off the tundras and taken from the South Pole, are all in Russian hands. All the US can hope to do is break through the Russian lines, stop the Red Death at any cost and finish the fight.

Admittedly, the setting doesn't look as good now as when I wrote it, but the whole war in the West was meant to be a backdrop to a novella and possible Cyberpunk 2020 campaign about STALKERS hiding in the slums of New York (which vaguely resembled Kowloon Walled City mixed with the city from Blade Runner) who were plotting to bring down the US government by hacking the latest US mech when it was tested.

Gasmasks are mandatory for everybody; seeing as the air is always filled with spores. You could breathe them in, and nobody would notice. It works slowly and yet it manages to cause a lot of damage. Swarms of mechanical monsters that resembled Earth fish dived out of liquid space at the edge of the solar system and pushed us back, planet by planet, until we were confined to the very core of the system. No one could venture out beyond halfway to Mars, be it in the Einstein continuum or liquid space. Remember, it was the time of love, when everyone thought that all diplomatic problems could be solved with a mindmeld pill and a good shag. They knew neither love nor compassion. Mindmeld didn't work, they were machines.
We had only five working space vessels left. One was the command ship, one was that device our foremost space navigatrix had used to beat Duran Duran, and three were ancient war machines, the Silver Hawks...

But when the Macro-Humanoids invaded the British were forced to active it, Dreadnought Alpha, despite it not being completely repaired. You see, the Brits couldn't get it flying again, they just had to push it out to sea... Now it's the pride of the free world fleet, protecting the seas from the land-dominating Macro-Humanoids.

Way I saw it, the Ark Royal was an iconic enough carrier it would fit as a WW2-era SDF-1. Perhaps it gets renamed, or something.

I just really wanted to make something of the image of Spitfires fighting Zentraedi over what used to be the Third Reich, while listening to songs like Land of Hope and Glory and We'll Meet Again to keep their fighting spirit up.

I'm working a setting called Maelstrom that fits the bill. It's a space adventure setting that aesthetically resembles a cross between Buck Rogers and Metroid Prime, with advanced technology and mysterious alien civilizations. But in terms of how the "world" as a whole works- the clashing cultures, the nature of heroes, the infrastructure and economy behind it all- the setting takes its cues from 19th-century earth as portrayed in fiction (From steampunk London and the Wild West all the way back to Jules Verne and Robert Louis Stevenson).

The Nationalists and Communists were scattered to the four winds, but their predictions of the end of the Qing were perhaps not mistaken. The Japanese defeated, China is a land divided. Arising from obscurity, a hero of the pacification of the Republic rebels has become the beloved Warlord of the South. The charismatic and power hungry successor Warlord of the Central Provinces seems destined to rule by the will of heaven. And the Warlord of Manchuria is defended by the unassailable embrace of the earth and sea.


RoT3K in 20th century China, where the last emperor didn't become a pawn of the Japanese and the warlords actually managed to overthrow the domestic revolutionaries afterwards, but in the process became a three way war for control over the reestablished empire.

The year is 1805. However, in 1800 Germany was conquered by the now-Kaiser Napoleon III. He set his sights on Britain next.

However, the British were ready. Napoleon's fleets advanced up the Solent, but were stopped by the Isle of Wight, turned into an immense fortress.

The Napoleonic Wars are at a standstill. On one side, Admiral Nelson fights for the Free Islands of Britain and Ireland, while on the other Kaiser Napoleon controls all of Europe. And throughout it all, Russia watches and bides its time...

Almost finished with the writeup for Sengoku 1964. More to follow, gotta get my proofreader to hit it first.
