It's a hard life in the wasteland around the Manchester Zone. We were among the first to be hit by their second onslaught. They were smarter this time, fitted their cylinders with huge heat rays to bombard us from orbit before descending. We still managed to beat them, but our largest cities were reduced to glassy plains.
Physics started to fail in the area. Strange things happened. Our only hope was to invent new sorts of protection.
Some of the old bunkers from the first war are still out there, coated with electrothermal paint to protect them from the heat ray. It worked well enough for the bunkers, but the black smoke still made short work of the inhabitants.
Well, this is my gear when I go into the Zone to retrieve some of the artifacts from the first war. I'm a stalker.

ITT strange fiction mixes in roleplaying scenarios.

I always thought that some of the settings that peg inc makes for savage worlds had interesting mixes. Like:

Evernight - standard fantasy world hit by an alien invasion.
Rippers - victorian monster hunters using bioware extracted from the monsters themselves.

    I c wut u did thar.

    S.T.A.L.K.E.R.+WotW=awesome.

Unfortunately, for me, nothing comes to mind, much as I'd like to combine Journey to the Center of the Earth with, say, Lord of the Rings.

    STEAMPUNK+FANTASY=AWESOME FANTASY

And let's face it...Lord of the Rings was dull as dishwater. Tolkein might have been a fine linguist, but if I have to force myself to keep reading your work, you need work as an author.

I agree there need to be threads about other things.

The trouble is, this isn't actually that awesome once you get past the HOLY SHIT STALKER-ness of it.

A good combination of things is one which builds on the settings it's inspired by.

Compare this setting above with one I propose, and which I am currently writing about.

The world is split in two after a nuclear war in Europe. Star Wars actually worked, and the USA, and parts of NATO survived unscathed. Unfortunately, everything east of the Iron Curtain is nuked, and that's when the land war started. You see, Russia had been expecting it. They had built massive underground colonies in Siberia. The nuclear strikes on Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad, even Berlin and the satellite states? Acceptable losses. Everyone who mattered was in the bunkers, living of hydroponically grown food and preparing the armies of clones and remotely operated tanks. The US army, rushing into the red zone, hits a brick wall of Soviet tanks and men. A WW1-style war of attrition has established in the tundra, and the only thing keeping the US army alive are convoys of thousands of trucks leaving the ports of Dunkirk and Calais and driving non-stop across Europe, along with airlifts. Trouble is, the nukes were aimed at population centres. The STALKERS (best way to describe whoever survived) have got a whole lot of Cold War era hardware. Partisans have got T90s and Hinds. If the convoys stop, the war is lost.
    >> Anonymous 11/23/08(Sun)18:26 No.3050384
    >>3050380
The USA can't even nuke the Red bastards. They need to take the bunkers intact, because there is also the Red Death to worry about. Russia is happy to prosecute a land war, because they'll win in time. But if it looks like they're losing, then they'll press the button and release a modified strain of algae into the oceans, which will over a period of a few years contaminate all standing water on earth and kill all marine life. The only way to survive will be to be in the bunkers, where the billions of gallons of fresh water, constantly recycled and replenished from ice off the tundras and taken from the South Pole, are all in Russian hands. All the US can hope to do is break through the Russian lines, stop the Red Death at any cost and finish the fight.

I see a major logical error there. Why is there a huge war of attrition on the ground? Why no direct assault from the air, taking out the facilities producing the algae in a stealth commando mission?

    >>3050503
Because they're underground, within the bunkers that were designed to keep the Russians alive through the nuclear war.

Admittedly, the setting doesn't look as good now as when I wrote it, but the whole war in the West was meant to be a backdrop to a novella and possible Cyberpunk 2020 campaign about STALKERS hiding in the slums of New York (which vaguely resembled Kowloon Walled City mixed with the city from Blade Runner) who were plotting to bring down the US government by hacking the latest US mech when it was tested.

We are the last bastion of the world and we're up against mushrooms. It's like I ended up in some twisted version of my previous life, yet, when I look outside I see it's real. Gasmasks are mandatory for everybody; seeing as the air is always filled with spores. You could breathe them in, and nobody would notice. It works slowly and yet it manages to cause a lot of damage. The spores quickly enter the braind and there it's tendrils nest between cracks of the brain. You do things you think are caused by your own free will; yet it is the parasite that controls you.

When you finally go for the last sleep the shroom comes out. If left untouched for a couple of days it can grow to a size of 2 feet; if left undisturbed for a couple of weeks it can grow to a size of 7 feet. It will then resemble a large mushroom; it will be only a matter of seconds till the spores get swept along with the wind.

The problem is that we can't check if someone is infected. Well; we can, but they won't survive it. Anyone who's caught not wearing a gasmask or respiratory mask must be burned on sight.

We've formed a small enclave of people that will continue the legacy of mankind. We will ensure that our milestones will survive and hopefully create new ones in the future. We'll have to stand strong; not only to the parasite, but also against ourselves. We must never lose hope. Our morale is what keeps us going, by sheer determination we will conquer it and make it our own.

Those that are already infected can't be saved. The most humane thing we can do is to end their suffering; cleanse them with the holy fire.

I remember the time of love.

Back in the day, when Earth needed no police, guards or weapons, when everyone was freely using liquid space as a quick and reliable way to circumvent the Einstein limit. Back before the attack.
They came without warning. Swarms of mechanical monsters that resembled Earth fish dived out of liquid space at the edge of the solar system and pushed us back, planet by planet, until we were confined to the very core of the system. No one could venture out beyond halfway to Mars, be it in the Einstein continuum or liquid space. Remember, it was the time of love, when everyone thought that all diplomatic problems could be solved with a mindmeld pill and a good shag. They knew neither love nor compassion. Mindmeld didn't work, they were machines.
We had only five working space vessels left. One was the command ship, one was that device our foremost space navigatrix had used to beat Duran Duran, and three were ancient war machines, the Silver Hawks...

If we're taking existing settings and timeshifting them?

"Humanity's first contact with the alien race known as the Macro-Humanoids occurred in the year 1942. No weapon we could muster could even dent their armoured suits, and the Second World War was brought to an abrupt halt as rays from space wiped London, Washington, Moscow, Tokyo and Berlin from the map.

They then sent a message to us. TELL US HOW YOU LIVE WITHOUT WAR. We could not respond adequately. More cities were razed by their Heat Rays, and soon the land became unsafe. Fleets of repurposed ships were constructed and we fled to the oceans, putting ashore only for supplies. The Macro-Humanoids held the land from their great mountain holds, and the Royal Navy was our last bastion of defence.

In 1944 we managed to destroy a Macro-Humanoid War Machine, and analyse it at our secret underground base near Stonehenge. What followed was the Hawker Valkyrie, a fighter that combined British aviation engineering with alien weaponry.
    >> Anonymous 11/23/08(Sun)20:30 No.3051112
    >>3051108
Our first counterattack against the Macro-Humanoids took place shortly afterwards, with the HMS Ark Royal deploying a wing of Valkyries deep behind Macro-Humanoid lines to attack their leader. Casualties were immense, but the attack was a success, or so it seemed.

A message came not much later. HOW CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT WAR?

Then something extraordinary happened. Ms. Vera Lynn's song "Keep the Home Fires Burning" was being played on the Ark Royal's messroom, and the Macro-Humanoids heard it. They immediately ceased all hostilities, save for a few diehards, who were silenced by the Royal Navy with Macro-Humanoid support.

It was music, they say, that tamed the savage beast."

    Oh man.

But it really isn't Robotech without the SDF-1. Though I guess in this setting, with the war going on, it's discovery was kept a secret. But when the Macro-Humanoids invaded the British were forced to active it, Dreadnought Alpha, despite it not being completely repaired. You see, the Brits couldn't get it flying again, they just had to push it out to sea... Now it's the pride of the free world fleet, protecting the seas from the land-dominating Macro-Humanoids.

We continue to diligently assemble and train a new generation of scientists and technicians. For what the Combine fear the most is not any tangible human weapon, but our will, our intellect, our ability to respond selectively and rationally to every terror they turn against us. We place our firmest hope in the human spirit, even knowing how easily it may be shattered. We have all seen friends and family crushed by the Combine. Some of our neighbors have allowed themselves to be co-opted, and purged of their humanity, by the military machine. And those who resisted have met a most terrible fate. Still, I cannot overstate how important it is that we retain our humanity. Only this will allow us to hold together, as we must, for their inevitable return... and what is certain to be unimaginable retaliation.

I'm working a setting called Maelstrom that fits the bill. It's a space adventure setting that aesthetically resembles a cross between Buck Rogers and Metroid Prime, with advanced technology and mysterious alien civilizations. But in terms of how the "world" as a whole works- the clashing cultures, the nature of heroes, the infrastructure and economy behind it all- the setting takes its cues from 19th-century earth as portrayed in fiction (From steampunk London and the Wild West all the way back to Jules Verne and Robert Louis Stevenson).

The Nationalists and Communists were scattered to the four winds, but their predictions of the end of the Qing were perhaps not mistaken. The Japanese defeated, China is a land divided. Arising from obscurity, a hero of the pacification of the Republic rebels has become the beloved Warlord of the South. The charismatic and power hungry successor Warlord of the Central Provinces seems destined to rule by the will of heaven. And the Warlord of Manchuria is defended by the unassailable embrace of the earth and sea.

RoT3K in 20th century China, where the last emperor didn't become a pawn of the Japanese and the warlords actually managed to overthrow the domestic revolutionaries afterwards, but in the process became a three way war for control over the reestablished empire.

I've always wanted to do a campaign based on VALIS, without telling my players first.

The Roman Empire is not dead. Someone or something has managed to hide a recursive time loop behind the illusion of progress; though the accidents remain, reality is forever transubstantiated into Rome.

    All roads lead to Her.

As Nixon fell from power, 666 was vanquished again; when Augustus comes none shall know. The reincarnation of Timothy is dead, but echoes of his thought come to those who read the Holy Texts in pink light. "Do Androids Dream..." contains seeds of the next world?

It's a terrible mess, much like most of Dick's later work, but Unknown Armies + VALIS = win beyond all measure.

It is the 1960's. Followers of the Three warlords, (some aided by Japanese royalist pirates based in Taiwan), are attempting to expand their reach into Nanman (Veitnam) to gain its valuable resources.

A battered US, already occupying Japan and much of Korea, is forced to do battle on the side of Nanman; mysterious reports filter to the Three Lords of new troops wearing armor that bullets cannot pierce, and armored behemoths that stalk the land, sweeping away tanks with bursts of searing light and howling shells. But the strategies of the "third Sun Tzu", aiding the Lord of the South, and his wife, a martialist and engineer without peer, may yet defeat the monstrosities the Westerners and Japanese have created to turn them back...
Meanwhile, the Taiwanese pirates have stolen examples of the new technology and brought it back to their lords, and the King of the Middle Lands waits to strike as they are caught up on ever more fronts...

    Also, is this too easy?

The year is 1805. However, in 1800 Germany was conquered by the now-Kaiser Napoleon III. He set his sights on Britain next.

However, the British were ready. Napoleon's fleets advanced up the Solent, but were stopped by the Isle of Wight, turned into an immense fortress.

The Napoleonic Wars are at a standstill. On one side, Admiral Nelson fights for the Free Islands of Britain and Ireland, while on the other Kaiser Napoleon controls all of Europe. And throughout it all, Russia watches and bides its time...
