"Draw." I stared at the man, and then looked down at the deck. The game had been over for almost an hour. I had raked in the cash, ending up with almost fourteen gold eagles in my pocket, and then he had said he wanted to play one last game. No cash. Just cards. And now with the cards spread before me, I figured it was the setup for one of those trick-deal card tricks. I was game.

I slid my finger over the fanned cards, and plucked one card from the deck, turning it over. The Six of Hearts.

"Okay. So now I have to remember the card, right?" The dealer just stared at me a second.

"Nope. You'll never be able to forget it. Guarantee you that." That accent. It was driving me nuts. Not quite creole, but close...

"That memorable, huh? Well, then you best get on with the trick, before I-"

"No trick. Just a game. And your card." He glanced back down at the table.

The cards were gone. And in the place where my card had been, there was a revolver.

"Oh... Madre de Dios..." I whispered, crossing my self. He just chuckled. It was beautiful. The barrel was topped with a double-pronged sight, and the handle was curved around in a strange way. I ran my fingers over it... it looked like it was made for me.

It was made for me. It was a Card. They found their slingers, not the other way around. And the Dealer... Hell. I had just won thirteen... oh... oh... boy.

"Well... what's it gonna be, fella?" He slid the gun towards me. "Draw... or fold?"

I didn't know what I was doing. I found myself picking it up, just to feel the heft of the Gun in my hand. It felt warm. It felt worn in, and smooth, and comfortable. Natural.

"I gue-" My words dropped in my mouth, half-formed. He was gone. I had drawn the Card.

And now I was going to have to play it.

I don't know what I was thinking the next day. It was a little crazy, knowing that I had a weapon of that sort on me. A weapon that had killed more people than I could count.

That's when I realized that I really didn't know anything about it. It looked like a .38 caliber, a Colt. That was good - I knew I could get those slugs pretty easily. Cheap, too. But beyond that... I didn't even know what to call it. Six, sure.

I didn't even know what I was supposed to do with the damned thing.

Two days later, I was going for a drink. I could use one - I had just finished pounding out enough horseshoes to get the whole Wells Fargo fleet shod. I heard him screaming before I opened the door.

"...if ONE of you got-dang hicks has the GUTS to go against sommun with a CARD, then you go `hed an DO IT! HUH?"

He was wearing a mask. Big fella - had Charlie's entire safe slung under one arm. I didn't think he was that big, but there you go. And he was pointing around a hand cannon with a barrel big enough to drop an eagle down. Everyone in the whole place was just staring at him, arms raised, when his eyes fixed at me. I don't know how he knew. Maybe he felt it. I sure as hell did. Drawing wasn't even a conscious action for me, the gun was out of the holster before I could think. I fired first - but two gunshots went off.

The threads are on Suptg. It's a weird west setting where smooth-bore zipguns are a dime a dozen, there may be about 2000 or 2500 really good hand-tooled guns in existence, and there are 54 Guns, with a capitol G. Each of the 54 are marked with the image of a playing card, and are passed to their owners by a person they call The Dealer, who may be the devil, an angel, or a neutral agent of fate. No one knows. The Gunslingers are naturally drawn to each other, and the final confrontation of any group of Cards heralds a major change, of one sort or another.

He slumped to the ground, a pair of holes through his chest, as the man behind him blew the smoke from a sawed-off Winchester, tucking it back into his duster.

    "Nice shot."

"Same." He bent over, plucking the pistol from the man and tucking it into an inside pocket. "Time to go."

I didn't argue the point. Didn't even stop to get his name before we left. Hell, I barely stopped by home to get my things.

I just didn't want to be there. Didn't want to be pinned down in one place. I had just killed a man, and more like him were going to come. Hell, they were going to come no matter where I ran. But this way I might at least be out in the desert somewhere. Away from Charlie's. Away from Linda and Bess. Away from Gus and his ridiculous obsession with cribbage.

Maybe I could do some good. Maybe there was a reason the Gun had come to me.

That's when the other fella turned to me and asked me how much of a bounty was on my head.

    "Nothing." He smiled.

    "New hand, huh?"

    "You might say that."

"Name's Eli." He grinned, showing off five gold teeth. "I've had Coyote for two years."

    "What's the card on `er?"

"Eight of Spades." I nodded, though that meant nothing to me. I was just making conversation, trying to get my brain around what was happening. I was a goddamn blacksmith, and not a very good one at that, not a gunman.

    "So... where are we headed?"

"Better question." He reached into one of his pockets - I realized then just how many were in his jacket - and pulled out some pemmican, chewing on it. "What do you want to do with that thing?"

I chewed over the question a while before I gave him an answer. "Anything that doesn't involve killin' someone, if possible." He laughed.

"Bill's it is. I think they're up in Kansas right now."

    "Buffalo Bill's?"

"Yep." He didn't say much else, just riding on ahead.

Now, at the time, we were in the old Texas territory, and I was dreading the ride up to the area around Dodge City-State on horseback. Thankfully, Eli was too. We swung up to Dallas.

Now, for those of you that have never been to Dallas, it's not like most City-States. It's got the wall. Oh, hell, it's got the wall. Thirty feet of steel-reinforced brick on every side, with gates for the two roads and the rails.

The rail was as big as I remembered it as a kid. It took almost an hour to get through the ticket line, and almost as long to get onto the thing. But once we were in the third passenger deck, I relaxed a little. We were on the way to Dodge, and we were doing it in style.

That's when we started talking... and things kind of got odd.

Now, I know that some folks around are just a little unhinged. Me, I was getting there. I had never killed anything before, and here I was carrying a tiny murder machine.

    Eli, on the other hand...

"And that's when the cactus punched me!" He laughed, a crackling sound, and lit a cigarette. "Crazy thing was that when I came to, all it had taken was my crackers."

"Uh-huh." I just nodded, convinced that I was dealing with a madman. "So what's at Buffalo Bill's, again?"

"He... knows about the Game." Eli leaned forward, folding his hands, and took another draw on the ciggy perched in his lips. "Sort of took it on himself to make the Show as a place where the new guys could come, make themselves at home, an' learn how the Game's played." The rail lurched forward, and I heard the high-pitched whine that mean the steam dynamo was starting up in the front - we were out on open plains now.

    "An' then what?"

"Well... then you figure out what you wanna fight for. An' then you go do it."

    "That simple?"

"More 'r less." He grinned that same shit-eating grin that I was starting to hate. "You'll always end up where the Dealer wants ya, anyway."

    "What do you mean?"

"That's why he picked you, an' not the others at the table, fella. `Cause he knew you'll do what you'll do. The Dealer plays the Game too." He chuckled. "It's a lovely lil' mess you're in, innit?"

The Jokers are the "God Guns" of the setting. Each one makes the slinger who carries it almost completely invincible, but each has a terrible downside.
The Black Joker is the Dead Man's Gun. If you have it, you'll never die in a gunfight, but you will die. Soon.
The Red Joker is the Unknown Gun. No one remembers anything about the man (or men) who carry it. It literally erases the slinger who picks it up from the world.

Focuses more on accuracy and trick shooting with moderate power and lower speed.
Much more focused on defense, support, and just responding/reacting to assaults rather than taking the initiative.

Looking through the article of the world for Wild Cards, the idea that Britain and France both support the Confederacy seems a bit stupid. Both of them had outlawed Slavery by then, and while France was an ally of America (as a whole) during the revolutionary war, Britain most certainly wasn't.

    The eight of clubs.

Some of the more scholarly types dubbed it Mjöllnir, after the Norse God of Thunder's hammer, but the West never had need for such fancy names. Any man that has seen it and lived to breathe about it just calls it The Cannon.

It takes a monster of a man to wield - by all right it ought to be mounted to wheels and manned by a crew of three - and it fires just a single shot at a time, but needs no more than one. One round from its massive black-iron bore flipped the eastbound Western Union engine off the tracks, killed near two-dozen men, and liberated half a million dollars headed towards Savannah.

Last seen in the hands of a negro, an escaped slave who goes by the name Solemn John. Damn near seven feet, and with The Cannon in his hands he's all but an implacable, dark-skinned God. Lord help the men who thought they could keep a yoke on him.

I think the gun types should be based on the card number. Like revolvers would be 6 cards for example. Obviously the suit would modify the gun. Such as the 6 of Clubs would be the "power" revolver, something like the Handcannon from the Resident Evil games or some other huge revolver. While the 6 of Spades would be the trick revolver, and would basically be Revolver Ocelot's Colt Single Action Army.

IRL they almost did support the Confederacy since they both wanted good deals on Southern produce (like cotton).

I was thinking the queen of spades would be accurate enough to shoot the moon and something neat happens when you do but that's only when in the hands of a very skilled gunslinger.

OP of time line, here. I actually did do quite a bit of research into the politics of the time before writing it. The British lawmakers, and those in charge of declaring war and whatnot, dearly wanted good trade relations with the Confederacy. The people may have had a problem with slavery, but it did not bother those in charge. In fact, the British built at least two of the Ironside ships used by the South, a legal action that put them on very bad terms with the North, but not enough to provoke all out war.

They eventually decided not to enter the war because they feared the reaction from their people.

France supported the South for the same reason it supported the fledgling US in the war for Independence, the North was seen as a tyrant trying to unjustly oppress the South.

They didn't enter the war because they doubted they were very low on cash and doubted they could beat the Union on their home turf without the British.

The time line is based upon the idea that after the North and South began to unravel, the European nations got greedy and dove in for the spoils in order to get rich(er) and to deny their rivals the same privilege.

IIRC clubs are power, diamonds are speed, hearts are accuracy, and spades are skill.

Clubs can blow up a house or shoot through a steel bank vault, diamonds can draw and aim instantly or put out hundreds of bullets per second, hearts can hit someone from across town or kill someone no matter where they are shot, but spades are the ones that do the "impossible" feats like shooting bullets out of the air, sniping someone from five miles off, or having gunfight precognition.

It was a brilliant day outside Duskany, Texas, and Mariposa was enjoying every moment of it. The breeze was brisk and yet not too forceful just enough of an excuse to cuddle up on her man's arm as they strolled down main street. He smiled down at her, and she up at him, admiring the strong line of his jaw and glittering green eyes. They were so deeply in love, and last night he had proposed! The ring glittered on her finger in the early morning sunshine.

    Nothing could be more perfect.

Mariposa sashayed down the street, rubbing up against her man again as a group of children ran laughing past. Something ground into her hip, something cold and hard. Her man tensed and his hand slipped into his duster. Mariposa felt confusion. Was it a gun? Her man had never been the violent sort, why would he carry?

She never got the chance to ask.

    Double-barrel shotgun, below-average size.

"Stealth in dealings.Betrayal by someone you trust. Minor theft."

Makes the user really "lucky" (ie, they don't need skill to pull of some cool shots), but causes people around them to "betray" the to the point were the user begins to avoid people and becomes paranoid.

Mariposa felt something wet slap against her shoulder. She looked down to see nothing but a red splash over the beautiful sundress her fiance had bought her. The first, panicked thought was that her precious ring was gone. Already in shock she looked around to see her arm, severed at the shoulder lying some feet behind her. Blood pumped from the socket, and she felt weak. She dropped to her knees and crawled after her arm. Clutching it to her chest she turned to see a scene right out of hell. Everything had gone red, as if the sun itself has been dipped in blood. Her fiance had pulled a gun, all silvered and shining.

Another man stood in the darkened front of the local bar. A mad grin spread across his face. In one raised hand he held some kind of cannon, smoke spilled from the barrel like blood spilled from Mariposa. She knew in that instant that her man would make everything right. Clutching her arm to her chest she sobbed, and watched as her love was gunned down, the madman raising another Gun, all black and gold in his left hand and firing with supernatural accuracy.

Bullets ripped through the flesh of her husband-to-be, time seemed to slow for Mariposa. The madman who had blown her arm off slowly stepped towards her fiance. She could see the malicious gleam in his eye, something inhuman.

Mariposa felt something, a presence beside her. A man squatted next to her, seemingly unaffected by the displacement of time. He seemed terribly out of place, an ancient English gentleman in a black tuxedo and bowler hat. He gazed around with mild interest and tsked.

"A shame. And I thought he would go so far." He watched as slowly, ever so slowly the madman tried to tug the silver gun out of a death grip. "Though I suppose these days there's no tellin' who can wield a gun properly any more."

At that moment he seemed to notice Mariposa. "I say Miss, you look to be in a spot of trouble." he reached into his button down coat and withdrew a pack of cards. He spread them, and offered them to Mary.

Solemn John crouched in the dust alongside the railroad tracks. He glistened with sweat, his upper half bare save for the Gun, swaddled in cloth and slung over his shoulder. The noon sun was harsh and the desert had a way of sucking the life out of a man through his skin. He never moved unless he had to, and there on the hardpan he looked for all the world like God had reached down and formed a man out of fertile soil and left him in the most unforgiving country possible.

Solemn John was going to bring life to the desert. That was his promise to all of his.

"It's comin'," he said, rising up, on those pillars of legs. I had to peer up at him, he towered so far over me, and found myself in his shadow. Sure enough, he was right. The rest of the men, maybe a dozen of us in all, were pointing to the hills where you see the coal-black plume of smoke rising from the engine as the train rounded the bend.

Something was happening to the killer. He held three guns now, cradling them like something precious. He flesh twitched, and his eyes rolled but Mariposa had only eyes for the deck of cards.

She reached out, taking one. The sensation of it sliding out of the deck and into her hands was indescribable. She turned it over and there was the Queen of Hearts. Her mouth opened in a gasp as electric sensations trembled up from the card into her one good arm. She looked up at the british man, she knew him now, "The Dealer", but he was gone. She looked down at the card but it was gone.

In its place a Gun was fitted into her hand. It felt like it belonged there. She had never held one of the repulsive things before but now it felt as if her entire life had been empty. Looking down at the Gun, Bloody Mary inscribed on its side in flowing red script.

Her other arm was gone. As if the gun had TAKEN her arm. She felt it was only right. Mariposa felt the gun pulling her arm, rising towards the murderer, the person who killed her man. He was thrashing and drooling, standing there staring at the sky.

She pulled the trigger, of her own free will she killed a man.

She left the guns, she left the body of her man, she left her old life behind her.

Bloody Mary clutched in one hand Mariposa walked into the sunrise.

(Should have been "That was his promise to all of us." Too tired to type straight.)

"I don't get it," I said, "A train carryin' half a million in gold with enough men guarding it to start an army, and you expect thirteen souls to stop it in the middle of the day, with no cover."

"No," he intoned, voice as deep as an iron bell. "Just need thirteen souls to rob it. I gon' stop it myself."

He moved to the middle of the tracks and slung the Gun from his shoulder. Instinctively, I held my breath as he removed the swaddling and dropped the canvas to ground.

Huge. A rifle, if you can call it that, big as a full grown man. Matte black iron down to a polished stock made from some wood I'd never seen, dark brown, made me think of steaming jungles I'd only ever heard about in stories. The bore was big enough to fit my fist into, and the gun wasn't sighted at all. This Gun wasn't meant to be aimed. All you had to do was point.

Solemn John brought The Cannon up to his waist and opened the chamber. With his other hand, he opened the pouch he kept about his waist and drew out a single bullet. A single bullet as big as my hand.

The shriek of the train whistle pierced the air and we all snapped to attention. They'd spotted him. A thousand tons of steel and iron were bearing down on Solemn John and he stood there, silent and impassive as the train thundered closer.

We all scattered away from the tracks. Sure, we'd heard the tales of the Cards, but no one believed everything they'd heard. Most of us, I reckon, figured Solemn John was about to be a bloody stain on the hardpan for the next 100 yards or so. But he just raised The Cannon. And I swear...

First the train was racin' towards Solemn John, and then the boiler just seemed to crumple inwards, spittin' steam as the seams popped and rivets scattered. The whole engine buckled and lifted, jumping the tracks.

The air filled with the sound of squealing metal as the train crashed and skidded to halt, some fifty feet from Solemn John. And never bat an eye. He just turned to us, some of the men still cowering in the dust, and said, "Come on. There's still work to be done."

As has doubtlessly been mentioned in the other, earlier threads leading up to this one, it's fundamentally no different in concept to Weapons of the Gods. In a West than never was, there are some fucksweet mystical weapons. People fight over them, for them, or because of them for all sorts of reasons. I don't know what else you really need to make it gameable.

Plus, the feel I get from the setting is that everything involving the Cards builds up to a climatic point, where all the Players end up in one big fight that has some large effect on the course of history in general. After which, the Dealer shuffles the Cards again, and the cycle repeats.

I like the idea of the Dealer as a sometimes-presence who literally comes and goes in the blink of an eye, too, by the way. Makes him feel like the catalyst of the Game, while being completely removed from play at the same time.

    The Four of Diamonds.

It's gone by many names, but everyone who's seen it says the same thing 'bout it, so I calls it like they seen it.

The Slinger was gettin' called out by some black hat tryin' to make a name for himself. Had a posse of a dozen men behind him - guess he thought that was a fair fight. The Slinger had a rifle slung over his back, but it stayed there the whole time - only iron he ever touched was his Card. He drew and fired off the first six before the poor bastards even had their hands on their grips. And he breaks the gun open-and-shut, just like that, and puts lead in the other six before the casings have hit the ground. And the leader of the bunch’s got twelve dead men and a pool of urine ‘round his ankles, and the Slinger casually cracks the Card, and as the casings fly out, if you looked closely… the bullets leapt right off his belt, into that Hungry Gun.

It just occurred to me that given most of the writefaggotry so far has consisted of someone with a card fucking up a large group of poorly prepared "boys", one of the remaining unfluffed cards should be a team buff gun.

IE the revolver itself is just an above average kind of gun, but when drawn from its holster it compels nearby people who aren't directly adversarial to you already to fight for you, and gives them better aim.

Somebody have the list of cards that have been fluffed/not yet fluffed as it presently stands?

Jack of Clubs could maim opponents and leave them crippled and harmless without actually killing them. Also, since the Jack of Hearts is also a one-eyed Jack, and and is missing the opposite eye, perhaps if a slinger carrying one meets the slinger carrying the other, then they must either join forces or kill the other and take their gun, but they cannot simply go their seperate ways. A person with both the Jack of Hearts and the Jack of Spades could wield the two of them together without penalty and perhaps gains some special bonuses, but if two gunslingers possessing the one of the two decide to work together then a weird sort of connection forms between them, almost a psychic link, that allows the two of them to work together exceptionally well.

Ace of Spades, the Bright Blue Blade.

Lemme tell you about the Ace of Spades, that gun all made of blue metal... When they call it a blade they mean it. It's a double sided sword, a sword with a neurotic mind driving it. My preference on how a Gunslinger with multiple Guns would be dealt with is that the extra Guns are simply not attuned to them. They hold no superb power for someone who was not chosen to wield them. Its power is akin to a regular gun, far superior to your common slugthrower but nothing more.

Moreover, after a time the Dealer would come to claim the spare(s). The Gunslinger could give them up willingly, as it is right for the Game to continue unabated, or, should the Gunslinger fight to keep his extra weapons...

There will be an extra Card to be Dealt.

Not every outlaw that has a Gun would give up a second willingly, but for the Game it just doesn't seem proper that one man could properly hoard many Guns.

Up close, Jed could see it was a lowly Derringer, a pathetic peashooter that was lucky to pierce skin, let alone kill a man. Jed laughed out loud at the puny little pistol.

The stranger lie on a chair, hat tipped down. Hearing the laughter woke him from his slumber. "Howdy pardner, what's so damn funny?"

Jed noticed the man's hand move slightly off the handle of the gun, revealing a card emblazoned upon it, the 2 of Hearts. "That supposed to be some kinda joke, mister." He spat his chew as he said this, chuckling. "Little baby toy like that ain't no damn Card." I just like the idea of the jokers being utterly fucked up reality-warping godhax guns, and the guy who has both of them existing (at least in legend) on an entirely different level than the rest of us.
Having two guns held by another whiskey drinkin' gunslinger who hangs out with his buds at the End of the World Saloon would be stupid. In fact, having the two Jokers held by someone you could even see or talk to like a normal person would be kind of shitty.
I like, in all settings, the idea that somewhere out there, probably not in a place any player will ever get to, exists a situation where things get balls-out Here There Be Dragons and every rule of the universe is chucked out the window. A dude with two Jokers should be like that.
Or they could just be more powerful iterations of the other 52, whichever.

It clicked, without so much as a bullet coming out. "Two days, mister." He laughed as he said this, but Jed had already started walking away, his attention diverted to the ten crisp dollars in his hand. He practically drooled at the possibilities.

Two days later, they found Jed face-down in a bowl of soup, without so much as a scratch on him. The doctor found a mark, but didn't bother telling anyone about it... A small, heart-shaped mark on the back of his neck, still hot days after the body had gone cold...

The whole concept of the Gun is precipitated on the idea that a Gunslinger holds one Gun and one alone. They don't need another, their's is suited for them as well as can be. If they do happen to get another Gun, it goes back into the Game, because the Game must continue.

If everyone knows about the guns, it's not as interesting. It doesn't have to be detailed, but if the average guy could say off-hand "oh yeah there are fiftythree magic Guns that give their users strange and incredible powers" it lessens the mystique somewhat.
Similarly, having the Jokers be legends about "the unstoppable gunslinger" doesn't, in my opinion, live up to the reputation that the Joker cards put forth.

Though I am generally inclined to agree- there's a difference between extraordinary ability and mystical powers (the teleportation gun in one of the previous threads is kind of meh to me as well). Though I will also note that there are 52 kinds of Guns to go through- four Suits that have specific properties, and then 13 Guns per Suit that match those properties. We may have to delve into somewhat mystical properties to prevent overlap.

Perhaps to you, but in a land of millions of people, only 54 have Guns. Most people expect to live their whole lives never seeing the results of a Gun, nevermind a Gunslinger (or his Gun). In the larger city-states, where it's more civilized, a Gunslinger is unlike to get away with just killing folk, and so it is unlike that they often go there. Those folk, the majority of the population I'd expect, may not believe that Guns exist anymore. Some may not believe they existed at all. I mean, when you hear about it from a distance, all it really sounds like is that some guy's really good at shootin' a gun, nothing more. The common folk really aren't generally all that up on their Gun mythos.

The gunslingers, though, they want to believe the legends. Because they think, hope, pray to Ol' Scratch that they might get to pick a Card, any Card, and wield such a weapon no man has ever made.

We want to define the Guns because we want to be able to make the RPG work. But it's a larger setting than just the Gunslingers, and it's also important to note how insignificant a population of fifty-four is in a land the size of North America, in a land of tens of millions. How insignificant will the population be that actually has seen a Gun in their lifetime.

I'd say a feasible way for that to work is as follows:

Gunslinger "marks" their target with a shot. 48 hour countdown to death. Or whatever timeframe you want.

If the Gunslinger is killed before the countdown, then the "mark" is no longer valid.

So basically, the Gunslinger has to survive long enough for the hit to take. There'd be no "I'm taking you with me" situations.

Thanks. I like the idea too. Two days or three or whatever the time limit would be.

And it would work best if it was a set limit. No bullshit like, "I want this guy to die in three days, and this guy in a week." It would have to be the same time delay for everyone.

Of course, the simple way is to just make it the same shot they used to 'mark' the victim. It is literally just the damage being delayed until a later time. The Card Holder should be able to choose the time (within a certain range), being able to shift the wait faster and to more of a degree with greater experience/compatibility with the gun.

Also, it could safely be expected that the Cards likely change a little each time, though they likely hold to certain ideals.

most people have written that the average person would look upon one of the Guns like a winning lottery ticket.
I prefer them being seen as more like aliens, Santa Claus, or explicit proof of the afterlife.

Perhaps a novice can mark someone, and they die within a week, and a master can mark someone to die within an hour. That said, the time it takes for their targets is ALWAYS the same. They shouldn't be able to change it at will.

Some ideas for more mundane weapons, just so everything isn't utterly hax:
-A pistol which can fire any type of ammunition. Yes, ANY, with the appropriate level of recoil.
-A silenced (no noise at all, not just a figure of speech) gun. A big deal in this setting.
-A rifle whose bullets travel in a straight line, unaffected by wind or gravity
-A gun which only hits living things
-A gun whose ricochets can be controlled by the owner
-An absurdly powerful telescopic sight, with many other settings up to and including X-Ray vision. Can be attached to any gun it will fit on, but it prefers a corresponding rifle.
-A lever action rifle which can be "charged" by pumping the lever, a little like how you pump a water gun to pressurize it. The only limit to how much power it can be fired with is whether you can hold it safely. (The owner is said to have never fired it for five years, but to have cranked the lever hundreds of times a day for the entire period. He wears it on his back wherever he goes, and no one knows what will happen if he pulls the trigger.)

When I met Captain Anderson, I was a shiftless man. Godless, drunk, just a broken pile of flesh that doused himself in whiskey, waiting for Ol' Scratch to drop a match on me.

Then the Captain came into town.

Walks right into the saloon in his Northern blues, callin' out for us to rise up against the Texan sonofabitches who'd been ruling the town with lead and gunpowder, who'd killed his sweetheart while he'd been away in the wars and broken every law and every lawman in Redemption. Nobody had the guts to fight back...then he brandished that gun. The Gun. A grip as white as snow, spattered with ten red hearts.

When we saw that Card, every man in that saloon with a lick of good left in their souls stood up. You could feel the righteous justice in the man, and you just knew that if you followed along and helped a mite, God would look after his own. And He helped Anderson.

He's Sheriff Anderson now. And the Devil doesn't come near Redemption no more, cause when the Sheriff needs an army, he's got Redemption. And us. Always us.

No more Card, though. The Sheriff gave it to a fella riding through, said he'd need it down the line. Good things always go where the good folk need it, saith the Lord. Or at least the preacher.

(The 10 of Hearts doesn't turn the wielder into a gunslinging wizard, but a leader of men, who'll become heroes up to the task.)

As I said, it's both, just depending on who you are. These stories are generally from the perspective of gunslingers (or those related to gunslingers) who would love a Gun for themselves. So anyway, kid, we were on the way to Dodge, me an' Eli.

Now, let me tell you something about rail travel. It's fast, but it's not too comfortable unless you're springin' for a luxury box on the top deck. Oh, sure, it's better than sittin' in the saddle for six hours at a time, but most of the rails you get nowadays really skimp on anything that isn't top-of-the-line. Our bench was pretty worn, had a few bad springs in the cushion, and it was too narrow to really lie back on, so I ended up sleeping sitting up, and waking myself whenever I leaned too far forward.

Still, I managed to get a little shut-eye. And by the time I woke up in Dodge, I was feeling far more rested. Eli took the lead when we headed from the station - he was more at home out here than I. Fact was, I had never actually been to Dodge before.

    Now I wondered why.

It was more strung-out than other City-States. There was a wall, but it didn't look like any of the fortresses that the other City-States were. You could see the vast railyards, where men were plating together new steam dynamos by hand and by great steel armatures. Warehouses full of grain and goods, in a row as far as the eye could see down the side of the tracks, right to the edge of the city. And - this was the strange part - not a single soldier in sight. I knew that Dodge had been neutral ground when the southern City-States had their brief rebellion, but I didn't figure that the city's aversion to soldiers would have lasted this long.

It wasn't until I started into the city that I realized why that was. Everyone in Dodge was packing a firearm. Slugtossers, mostly, but they looked a bit better than most. At least most of them didn't look like they'd explode if you fired one off. A few fellas were wearing Smythes, gleaming white steel that shone brighter than any silver, right out in the open. No wonder people didn't mess with Dodge... if they did, there would be nothing left of them.

    "So where are we going?"

"I need to see if Bill's is still- well, yeah. We're good." Eli grinned as he gestured to one of the posters for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Congress of the Rough Riders of the World. Two parts vaudeville to three parts riders showing off onstage, I could see why it was so damned popular, especially among the State-dwelling folk. Dodge was the furthest west the show went while performing, presumably due to the fact that any further, and folks would have seen it all.

    "So what's Bill like, anyway?"

"Buffalo Bill's a good guy. Just keep your wits about you... oh, and hold on to your wallet."

    "Why's that?"

Worked up what I feel is a solid base mechanic for WC:SotG over a few days at work, am testing it tomorrow with a subset of my normal weekly group, will report as soon as I know what's what.

What to expect: 5 stats, applying to both guns and slingers, point buy for Char. creation, with a hard and fast rule for specifics on power level and building individual guns, up to and including cards. (Specialized powers for individual Cards is up for debate, but hey, I'm not in charge of how you play it, eh?) Simple combat, with easy rules on hits, damage, and kills, individual play style determined mostly by build of character and the type of gun they use, but "tricks" figure in heavily for how each shootout goes down. Would post now, but heading out the door for work in 5 minutes, and I always prefer to give you guys at least a semi-tested product. See you tomorrow.

"The game is Omaha Hamlet. Kings are dead, Queens are wild, and Jacks are low." Buffalo Bill Cody passed out cards with an ease that was mostly the result of an incredible amount of practice, puffing on an ancient-looking cherokee pipe. A long salt-and-pepper goatee trailed a good three inches from his chin, and his mustache, while trimmed, was unwaxed. The two other players at the table were a scrawny little guy in flannel and a black fella with the biggest damn nose I've ever seen. Almost looked Greek, know what I mean?

"Bill." Eli grunted as he walked into the tent, nodding at the older man.

"Eli Guthrie. To what do I owe this pleasure?" Bill set his pipe aside, briefly glancing at his cards before he turned over the first three.

    "New game. New player."

"Again?" He allowed himself a smirk, shaking his head. "Seems to be starting quicker and quicker." The smirk faded as Eli set down the hand cannon. "Four of Clubs. Damn." He picked up the gun by the barrel, and set it aside, getting a pitiful shake of the head from the black fella. When he spoke, his voice was a little higher than I expected, soft. Real pleasant.

"At least it should be over fast this time."

"You'd think." Bill just laughed, tossing a few wooden nickels into the center of the table.

From there, the conversation sharply veered into topics far too controversial to be discussed in mixed company, so I'll just say that the scrawny fella who didn't talk much ended up winning, not that it mattered since they were just playing with chips. Afterwards, he left, leaving Bill, Eli, the black man (whose name, I gathered, was Samuel) and myself.

    "Just once."

"Not enough, then." He turned back to his pipe, leaning back in the folding chair. "It'll take you a little while to get the Six's specialty down."

    "What is it?"

"I don't know." He allowed himself a faint smile. "It's a little different for each gunslinger. Just the way they work, I guess... but you'll know it. Sure as by the time you're done, you'll know her name."

"And how do I get that?"

"Same way you get anything in life. You learn it." He packed a little more tobacco into the pipe, lighting it again. "We'll start in the morning."

"Suits me." I helped myself to a slug of whisky, flinching a little. Strong stuff - Canadian. "Hey, Bill. You gonna keep that Gun?"

"The Club? Naaaaaah." He shook his head. "I've never picked one up for more'n a minute. Not my place." He took a few moments to puff, blowing a lazy smoke ring. "I'm just holding it for now. Better it sit around in my box, waitin' for the next game to start than float around in the hand of some idiot that's gonna try an rob a bank with it."

"Fair enough, fair enough." I decided against the obvious questions - how long did they stay there? Who did he give the Guns to? Did the Dealer himself pick them up, or did they just... leave?

Now, I was curious, but you have to understand... I was also terrified of the answer. Absolutely petrified.

I would be lying if I told you that I didn't sleep that night. I did. Like a bump on a log. No dreams, no interruptions, just me and a comfy cot. Slept late, too, all the way in to eight in the morning.

When I finally got up, Bill had set up a bunch of haystacks with targets on the far side of the ring. He took me down to the other end, and told me to try to hit them.

Now, you have to understand, the Guns are amazing. They're accurate, durable, and never misfire. They put power in your hands that a man dreams of. But if you stink, you still stink. Took me a good ten or twelve times reloading before I could hit the targets with any kind of regularity.

Then, I got lucky. One right in the square center of a target, a yellow patch in the center of a black circle. Bill clapped my shoulder, laughing. "Bout time. Now let's see if you can't do it again!"

"Again?" It struck something inside me. Yeah, that felt right. That was what I wanted to do... you want me to do it again? Done. My arm came up, and I squeezed off three more shots, one after the other. Each hit the same hole, sending off a spray of hay. I stared at the target for a good thirty seconds after that, just trying to see if I had done what I thought I did.

"By George, I think you've got it." Bill started to walk away, just as the word came to my lips.

    "She remembers..."

    "Yep."

    "Memory."

"That'd be her. We're done for now..."

Bradley rode through the dusty plains on his trusty steed, looking down at the most beautiful firearm his eyes had ever glimpsed. It was a .50 Magnum, and a big one at that: its barrel must have been well over a foot and a half long. A beautiful ivory grip led up to an incredible silver body, everything covered with a magnificent chrome finish, from the hammer to the sights. Most beautiful of all, however, was the small emblem on that gorgeous handle: a playing card depicting the King of Clubs.

The gun didn't just look good, either, it actually felt good, it felt powerful. It hummed quietly in his hand, and after a while made his hand numb. Even so, Brad held onto it tighter than he'd ever held anything before, for the simple fear he would drop it. He could not allow that to happen, before getting to test out his new weapon that is.

A few days later Bradley reached his destination: Houston, one of the biggest city states in all of Texas. He tied up his horse, and attempted to go inside. As he approached, he remembered the Gun he was holding and promptly stashed it away in his holster, or at least attempted to: the barrel was far too long. He put it in as far as it would go and hoped the armed guards wouldn't notice. He moved into the city, moving in broad daylight looking for the man he was sent to kill, a tall Mexican named Gordito the Grizzled. With the Card at his side, Gordito would stand no chance. He walked into the tavern, and loudly asked the barkeep any information on his target. As he said it, a chair pushed out from behind him, followed by a small click. Brad turned around to see a large, very angry Mexican man looking at him, .44 pointed his way.

"I presume you're Gordito the Grizzled?" he asked, an arrogant smirk on his face. "I can see by that ugly face of yours how you'd get such a name."

Gordito growled a little at that, then said, "Go ahead and shoot me, white man. Your puny bullets will not harm me. I've survived many a gunshot. What makes you think you can kill me?"

Brad laughed again. "This little beauty!" he yelled, his hand instinctively grabbing his gun and pulling it out. He fired his shot.
