So after nearly two weeks without, its time for..... GAME OF THRONES QUEST!

Despite OP being a huge faggot (I work in American politics... If you follow those, you will know that they have been fucking insane for the last few months. The last two weeks have been a madhouse, but there is no amount of contrition I can perform that should earn me your forgiveness.), this quest is still alive and kicking. For everyone who held onto hope, I am fucking honored you had faith in me. So let's get this shit rolling...

When last we left our awesome and lucky Lord Dustain Karban, Lord of the Arbor Isles, he was brooding away about coin and women in his solar as a slow, steady rain fell. Autumn was well and truly on the Arbor, and the smallfolk were preparing for what all hoped would be a mercifully short winter. While the Arbor may not get snows like the north, it did get rather cold. Frost would be common, with dense fogs and steady, soaking drizzles. Still, it is hard to take such damp and cold for months on end, and what lives the lack of snows spared, disease claimed. Wharfman's Cough and the rot could claim you as easy as frostbite would north of the Neck, and you pray to the Seven that such misfortune will miss your people. The last harvest is to be crucial, and your farmers hope that the rains will lead to a bumper crop.

>Wat do?
Investigate the ongoing construction?
Have breakfast in your solar while Terris reads the letters you got from merchants? (The boy needs to practice his reading.)
Ride out to the western fields to talk with the smallfolk and inspect the pre-winter preparations?
Inspect the current crop of recruits for Saltmouth's guard?
Scream at the OP for being a disappearing faggot?
>>

First week of classes and I have bid goodbye to sleep.
>>

First thing is breakfast and letters. That's always our first order of business.

I won't yell at disappearing faggot OP, but I'm wondering if you have the pastebin for more of the crunch.
>>
>>20435031
Dude, you can crash if you need it. To make up for being the world's cruelest GM, I am going to be holding session tonight, into tomorrow morning and (with several short breaks) all the way into Friday morning. So we will still be here if you need your sleep.

Basically, I feel kinda terrible about how my job ate my face and I feel compelled to make amends. The best way I could think to do that, in my mind, is to run basically around 24 hours of questing during the next 36 or so. Which seemed kinda fair in my mind.
>>
op your forgetting the horrific case of blue ball syndrome our lucky lord is currently facing. i can now totally understand why he had that threesome when the poor guy can get laid he goes all out since he doesn't know when he will get laid again.
>>
>I won't yell at disappearing faggot OP, but I'm wondering if you have the pastebin for more of the crunch.

It is being finalized as we speak, in between posts. Need to polish up some stuff.... The final cut might exclude some of the non-building upgrades like Bards, bridges and breakwaters (I am a fan of alliterations), but it should be a good improvement.

Terris reads over some pleas from merchants from Sun House as you wolf down a half dozen hardboiled eggs, several thick pieces of blackened bacon, a mug of beer and several salted sardines spread on thick, dark bread. His skill with letters and numbers has increased substantially since Ben took attention of his studies, and you are rather pleased with that. You note down a few quick responses to them which you will get around to later, and take the lad outside.
Looking down on the practice yard, Terris watches Ser Laurence Cargill work some of the new guard through spear drills, hollering in his half-cracked old voice for them to straighten up or use better form. You find yourself idly watching two of the serving girls fetch water from the well. The redhead one with the freckles and fiery curls.... Shit. You realize you are staring but resolve to get to the bottom of that situation. It has been a while, after all.
>>
You have a quick conference with Ben and Ser Cargill as the new guardsmen go off to attend to duties across the castle. They are working with the more experienced men for now, until they are ready to serve on there own... The black tabard commands respect in Saltmouth, and the men wearing it are proud to be in your service.

Ser Laurence gives you the rundown of your strength. "Our forces on the isles are currently ten war galleys, a company of marines, a detachment of spearmen, and our company of archers. Patrolling the town and the keep are two hundred guardsmen, who also rotate through the other islands. On the mainland, ten war galleys sit in port, with two companies of marines spread between them. In the castle, two hundred well-trained guardsmen watch the town and our surrounding lands, while a unit of spearmen and lancers are currently undergoind training."

Ben accounts for the state of your lands. "My lord, construction proceeds apace. The storehouses you commanded to be build are set to be finished within the fortnight, and construction on the castle is ahead of schedule. Our coffers are dangerously depleted, however... But the storerooms and armories are well stocked in case of winter, disaster, or siege. Men's morale is high and the city is safe, orderly, and continues to exchange goods at an impressive rate with traders running the gamut from Tyroshi to Gulltowners."

>Wat Say?
>>
THERE IS A GOD IT'S GAME OF THRONES QUEST!
>>
>>20435284

Awesome, keep up the good work
>>
>>20435284
Well, that and: "Even as well prepared as we seem to be, there's always more than can be done even in winter. Training for example. Men are given towards leisure in the cold months. A bit of exercise might serve to warm the hearts and keep skills sharp. I suspect that we might be wise to patrol the borders as well."

Putting my money in for upgrading the existing troops. A hard core around which to build a future army!
>>
>>20435284
Empty coffers but full bellies. With winter approaching Ben I prefer it that way.

>Been looking forward to this
>>
>>20435289
You beautiful motherfucker, get in here. It is time to be awesome, make shitloads of money, drink wine, and be more awesome than we were previously. Sound the horns and lock up your daughters, Karban is back.

>>20435325
>>20435341
Both of your advisers seem to agree on this. Your current forces are well-drilled and even have a bit of combat experience, but they aren't really an army. Winter will give you time to stockpile materials and plan for the spring, while the port keeps coin and travelers coming in and out, ensuring that you will have news and the gold to pursue your future plans. They know you are ambitious, and the first step towards greater power for a lord is to have either extensive lands or a large army.

>Anything pressing come to mind that you guys want to attend to?
>>
>>20435381
More lance practice. We really want to be able to name the paragon of love and beauty.
>>
>>20435381
Nothing, except that that 1 wealth is hideously ugly. Crank up the money machine, daddy needs his hookers and blow.
>>
>>20435380
I am happy to be back, and happier to see you guys are still around.

Mentioning that fact to Ben, he just nods sagely as he goes over the stores of the castle. You have plenty of wine, and fresh running water is always accessible from the Windingwater. The tunnels underneath the keep hold nearly two hundred barrels of wine and the same in ale, several thousand links of sausage, nearly thirty smoked and salted hanks of venison and a like number of pork, with double the number in mutton. You have hundreds of bags of milled grain, dozens of wheels of cheese, and plentiful pickled vegetables, crates of dried fruits, and jars of fruits soaking in sweet juices. While the smallfolk may not have such extensive preparations, by all accounts larders and storehouses are set to be well stocked after the final harvest. Many of the countryfolk are happy with the rain, as mushrooms have become easy to find and harvest in huge numbers.
>>
>>20435381

Double check winter preparations, perhaps. Otherwise we seem to be sitting pretty for the moment.
>>
>>20435381
We should get down to the bottom of the Cargill mysterious death situation. We already have people on it but that isn't something I want hanging over our head.
>>
I knew if I checked every night he would return! I knew!

I'm so happy I could bloody a Martell!
>>
>>20435428
We always do that though... We amass a small fortune, and then blow it on ever more increasingly expensive infrastructure projects and investments. As long as the (patent-pending) Magical Money Machine keeps performing in the dead of winter, the spring should see us sitting on a literal heap of gold.

>>20435425
We have been working at that with renewed vigor for the last four months. Generally, we find ourselves out on our little practice field twice or three times a week with our knights to practice. You want to impress lord and lady alike... And not taking a lance to the face this time would be awesome too.

>>20435494
Dont you hate that?

The rest of the day is spent talking to your men and discussing preparations for the winter. Things are going well right now, even if everyone is nervous about if an early frost will hit the fields. You worry about that too, as the last harvest of the oranges, limes, and olives really needs to come in. There are men from Highgarden to Sunspear expecting barrels of olives and slices of fine, dried fruits. An early frost could cost you your weight in silver.

The next month brings rains and more rains. The sky has turned from its normally burnt blue to a dull, iron-like grey. Clouds of fog hang to the limestone towers and slate roofs of Saltmouth, with hearths and lamps burning like diffused points of life in a blanket of dark dreariness.

You are worried by the slowly-worsening conditions, but you have a lot on your plate. Ser Wallgrave writes you weekly now, telling you that the isles are pacified, that the men long to return home, and that their force is useless out there. Caswell seems to agree, but he would dearly like a company of the marines quartered in Saltmouth to boost the strength he has on his ten ships. Meanwhile, the pairs reports of the non-military matters brightens your life. The fishermen are out once again, and no brigands or pirates have been spotted lately. The next two months or so should see the great schools of cod pass by the islands, and everyone is in preparation for the nearly constant fishing that will follow.

On the mainland, people till the fields while Saltmouth begins production of all the things your smallfolk will need when the cold comes. Olive oil for cooking, barrels for storing foods, sacks for grain and other produce... Even shovels see an increase in sales as men in the country shore up their root cellars or expand them. Your entire land is occupied with readiness. You are sure the miners up along the Windingwater approve of such things as it increases the value of their ores substantially.

Law is mostly a passive stat, representing the general orderliness of lands under player control. Having less of it hits us with penalties to other stats. There are times and ways that law can be used instead of something else, but it's a desperation move of sorts since it hurts future production.

Also, did anything ever come up from when we were discussing finding a 'City Planner' Of sorts?

I remember us getting an architect, but I'd like us to make sure the city is both defensible from attack by sea, and livable by the populace without reverting to squalor and slums. We don't want to become the new kings landing with all this growth.

Increasing the presence of the town guard might also be an idea.
>>
This nudges the current population of Saltmouth to nearly seven thousand souls. Over a third are Reachmen from the mainland, come to ply trade or talent in the growing city as the word of your port spreads across the Strait and to the other provinces. Most surprisingly, nearly a tenth of the new immigrants are from the Free Cities... It isn't uncommon to see Tyroshi with the brightly-colored facial hair and delicate head designs, or Pentoshi with their beards, Even Braavosii swagger down the streets in demicapes and hose, drinking and trading and working alongside Arbormen who have roots that trace back to the first men on the island. Ben seems to think it is something fantastical, but you are more focused on the hard aspect of it: New men mean new opportunities, and your coffers are once again filling with coins.

What is the most pressing business, however, comes by raven. Lord Portain sends his greetings and a long letter, but there is one paragraph that alerts you. It reads:
"While I do intend to visit soon, there have been issues here at home that are most troubling. Along with my son's cough, there has been discontent among my smallfolk. If I was a foolish man, I would panic. Perhaps we should meet where we first joined efforts? I jest, my friend, do not fear. We shall communicate, as ever, through raven. Such is the easiest and most private form of communication."

As you read it with Ben, you are both confused and slightly alarmed.
>Wat do?
>>
>>20436007
The guard in Saltmouth was just doubled in size, and the architect is awaiting the return of his servant while he whiles away the time in Pentos. However, he would be the one to talk to about having both a livable city and one that is well secured from attack.
>>
>>20436035
Trouble with the smallfolk? I bet it's because they want to join the winning (Karban) faction. Either way, a new quest! See if any townsmen of renown might have come from that direction or heard rumors about unrest in Portainlandia.
>>
>>20436035
Well thats not troubling what so ever. Maybe a short trip is in order.
>>
>>20436035

Then I say we pen a letter to Portain, then set a meeting with this new architect to discuss or rapidly growing city and its future.
>>
Combine the two. Set in motion our plan to help our bro, the meeting with the architect.
>>
>>20436079
This sounds good. Keep an ear to the ground, this is some form of warning I just hope we don't misinterpret it.
>>
>>20436035through raven. Such is the easiest and most private form of communication.

That doesn't sound like Lord Portain at all. Very troubling. We should visit or sent someone to the smugglers hide out we raid with Portain.
>>
>>20436060
>>20436079
>>20436074
These are all fair ideas... While it may be a bit much to believe all his subjects are clamoring for a new lord, murmurs of unrest among the common people are always cause for attention and investigation. The reference to the meeting place escapes you at the moment, but you resolve to send the man a raven and a letter so that you can get to the bottom of it.

Despite that rather dark section, the rest of his letter brings good news. His people have eagerly expanded into the Northwood, and his farmers are predicting bumper crops of barley, turnips, radishes, and onions. His son is fighting off a case of coughs, and his older son and daughter are progressing in their lessons as they should. His wife also extended an invitation for your wards, the two Clawwater daughters, to visit them at Twiston for several weeks which you feel could be a good opportunity to socialize them.
>>
>>20436126
>>20436122
Those ideas strike you as very wise. Perhaps such preparations would be a smart move.

>>20436079
>>20436116
Our architect will not arrive for two months yet, as his servant is still heading back to tell his master. The man is yet in Pentos, and will have to move his tools and books, his staff, and his household across the Dornish coastline to the Strait. However, when he arrives, you will probably have so many backlogged projects that you will be working him like a slave.
>>
>>20436163

A small group of the steel guard could do the trick, with all due discretion.
>>
>>20436188
I agree. And on that note, is it possible to upgrade the steel guard to elite?
>>
>>20436188
That would be a good plan. Cress, Doros, Gray Thom, Ser Honeyhall, and Jean would make a good team. Small in number, stealthy, fast, and dangerous. The could be at the site within three days... Two days if they rode hard.

Meanwhile, you are going to be kept busy with administration for the time being. A number of traders from Lys are accusing two men from Oldtown of swindling them out of cloth-of-gold, and you have a feeling they were using your tax officials to, unwittingly, do it. That matter stands to take the better part of the rest of the week...

This kind of shit is what makes you hate being a lord. It is really a simple he-said, he said.... Until evidence starts to come up. Several taxmen testify, as does a dockworker who overheard something and is compensated several stags for his time (much to his delight). At the end of the trial, both the men from Oldtown are ordered out of Saltmouth, with two of their ships and the ships cargoes held as payment for their attempted duplicity. While you, as the judge, are entitled to a portion of the judgement, you simply let the Lyseanese take both of the ships after they pay you a handsome sum of seventy five dragons and a few choice bits of cargo (the three jars or finely-ground pepper are especially thoughtful of them).

Your mind isn't really on the matter. As the trial begins, Ser Honeyhall leads the small party northwest under the cover of night, a small group with additional horses and perhaps a tenday's supply of food, along with a letter of your authority and trust. You hope that they uncover something... Preferably something good, like a name-day surprise gift or a magical hare. Sadly, you realize that a much darker thing will be uncovered instead.

The Steel Guard return after the trial is over, with little to report. Doros and Ser Honeyhall both give you roughly the same story. The party camped, well hidden, in the woods. Every day, at least one of them would tend a small fire near the now-abandoned shacks the smugglers had once used. In six days, not a man was seen or even heard. However, Cress insists that someone /had/ been there. He found what could have been a disguised campsite that was only a few weeks old, and several signs of men staying in the area... Honeyhall describes it best. "It was a weird feeling in a strange place, m'lord. Like we were being watched by the very trees themselves. It was too still, too quiet... We couldn't have been the only ones there as of late."

>>20436275
Both Caswell and Hathaway are far more... acquainted with the darker side of the cities populace, and they have friends and former allies all across the place. If you gave them some coin, they could certainly start to put something together. In mechanical terms, 10 Wealth or so would get the ball rolling, while 15 Wealth would really put some gas into such a plan. The time it takes would depend on many factors but the payout could be potentially huge.

The garrison force that you have stationed in Clawwater Keep is going to, for all intents and purposes, need a resupply or three during the winter months. While the citizens may be able to harvest the sea's bounty, the force you have in the castle is another 300 mouths that require feeding.

It is up to you rather you want to leave them there or bring them home. If they stay, you are going to need to figure out just when you want to be dispatching supplies and materials for them to ride out the winter. While the isles have been rather calm, you think that Ser Wallgrave and his two hundred, battle-tested soldiers might have something to do with that.
>>
>>20436407

OK its a nice idea but before we pay 15 fucking wealth don't you think that our bushiness relationship with with lady whatshername in Saltmouth is covering our current needs went it come to information gathering?
>>
>>20436432

This is something people have been pushing for for a half dozen threads or more. I'm with the guardsman and the vote for 15 wealth.

I'd also like to weigh in and say we keep the garrison on the islands. We have ships, we can orginize extra stores in our new storehouses. Maybe even rotating some new men over there to give the current garrison a break.
>>
>>20436432

Plus a few and (I mean a few) well place contacts/informants might be all we need now. Just make a nice friendship with a well connected merchant or city guard captain in Oldtown will keep us well inform without having to pay for the equivalent of a small castle.
>>
>>20436432
She's ultimately untrustworthy. I mean, we bought her, but bonds of fellowship tie others to us stronger than knots of gold. All someone has to do is offer her enough gold and she'd almost certainly have little problem betraying us at this point. Down the road with an established working relationship it's a different story.

>>20436418
Hmm.... my first response is to bring most of them home. Leave a token force to hold the place, switch them out when it can be done safely, but I doubt there's much need for an army there at this point. We shook things up pretty good, there won't be any trouble there for a year or so. If the conquering had been worse we'd need to keep a stronger garrison, but Karban's luck.
>>
>>20436461

Please, lets keep our money until the winter ends, it 15 wealth! that's way more than the luxury village we pay for the rich merchant. A few well place friends will serve our needs better that a "spy network" that will be wasting time most of its time.
>>
So it seems that we want to bring our men home, and for the meantime hold off on our spy network.

You write the letters that night, and make sure to send word to prepare some of the galleys. Even if the soldiers are coming home, there will be a force remaining. Caswell will remain behind with the ten ships you have there, his hundred or so marines, and the two hundred guardsmen that are in charge of keeping law and order well in place. Meanwhile, Ser Wallgrave will head home with the spearmen and archers, who will once again take up residence in the barracks of Castle Salt.

Coming home with these men will be many of the luxuries and staff of the former Clawwater's keep, to attend to the comfort of your wards. Also, many crates of crabs and bushels of apples will come back as well.

>Roll 1d100 for weather and luck.
>>
>>20436501

How the hell is it wasting it time? There's already a ton of we secrects and rumors we want to find out about, and we've yet to leave the arbor. It's more than a worthwhile investment, and the sooner we do it, the better.
>>
rolled 85 = 85

>>20436547

Weather.

Also, I disagree regarding the spy network. We may wanna wait until next month to build up a little more wealth. But I say we sink the 15 into it.
>>
>>20436556
The ships find good wind and choppy, if not horrible, seas. They should reach the isles in about three days time, and perhaps could be home five or so days after that. You go down to the docks to wish the men off, and to shake the hands of the captains. If the Seven are willing, they will find the islands quiet and peaceable, content to be left to their own devices and industries.

Meanwhile, the duties or preparing Saltmouth for winter are ever pressing.

>QUESTION
If I crashed for a while guys, would you want to pick this up again in around five to seven hours? I wish I could go later, but I spent the entirety of today in work. I could push on for a little while longer, but I am afraid about letting quality slip.

Also, by tomorrow morning I should have the new pastebin up and shiny, ready to be absolutely abused and broken by you bastards.
>>
>>20436605
>ANSWER
Sure, Princely, we all need our sleep.
>>
>>20436605
Your sleep takes priority over our entertainment. I can't wait to see the Pastebin and pore over it.
>>
>>20436633
The stuff I am hoping will raise eyebrows? Olive Oil presses, Wineries, non-combat fleets, port improvements, and siege weapons.

At least, that is what I predict will draw some eyes.

Thanks guys. I will be on here for around five or so more minutes, so ask your questions now and I will answer them before I pass out.
>>
FUCK YEEEEEEAAAAAAH! Karban is back!
>>
Is 10 wealth enough to build a fishwarf on our acquired islands?
>>
>>20439150
This might be a good idea. We said that we would bring the Islands up to speed, after all.

But first Spy Network. There are many things we need to find out:

a) the mystery of the Cargill Curse
b) Lord Portains strange letter
c) How Paxter is doing over all. Remember his father predicted trouble in the event of his death
d) i want any and all rumours on the forest our Steelguard camped in. We might need to kill some rebels or bandits soon.
e) intel is the winning factor in any war.

So lets get 15 Wealth first and then sink it all into many hidden eyes and ears. The more sources of information the more reliable it becomes.

Also, glad your back Princely.
>>
>>20439312
What about the various things we wanted to do there ? Like the sealpelts trading, the oyster/pearl farms, the logging operation... How did those things advance in these last months ?
>>
>>20439312
Here is an idea for the spy network :
Littlefinger had his whores, and it worked so well because people saw them as part of the scenery, in a manner of speaking. My suggestion is to work out something similar, but with fools instead.
Everyone ignore them most of the time and they are found in all the places that matters. Once we have established our Fools Secret Brotherhood (FSB), no secret in Westeros will be safe from us! Bonus point if we can have them double as deadly assassins, Patchface the Facekiller has such a nice ring to it.

No it wasn't a serious idea, relax
>>
Go play chess with the four kids we have around. Teach them if they aren't all used to that game, else have them do a tourney over a few days, with a a reward to the choice of the winner.
Buy them art supplies too, and get artists of the various kinds to visit them and explain the basis of their respective crafts. Knowing how to paint, play music or write poems might make them better individuals.
Use the occasion to get to know the artists of saltmouth. Amateur ones are fine too.
>>
>>20440209
We're not playing Princess Maker
>>
>>20440306
They don't have the plague, you know. Interacting directly with them once every six months won't kill us.
>>
>>20440209
This idea isn't bad. I don't really care about the chess with the girls, but teaching squires tactics and strategy through chess is decent.
And, by engaging the girls with art, we show the Smallfolk that we're caring for the girls, and we have an appreciation for the finer things. We show off two forms of class, while hopefully giving the girls something to do that they enjoy.

It'll also look good even if we just give them back to the Redwynes. We got them clothes, taught them art, let them interact with other children, they just don't like us.
>>
>>20440470
>>20440209
You mean cyvasse. There is no chess in westeros. Other than that it's a good idea.
>>
>>20440470
Taking care of the Clawwater girls is some trouble for no real gain, and Princely has already stated that giving them back to the Redwynes as soon as they visit Saltmouth Castle wouldn't make Karban look bad.
>>
>>20440669
Stop acting like they're horrible people and every moment spent with them requires painful and taxing efforts.
They're just girls.
Taking care of them is no real trouble, and if we're lucky we might make them useful people out of them that would help us. If we're not, and just do it right, we still have gains in terms of reputation.
Giving them back will not fuck us "horrifically badly" in terms of reputation, according to princely. People will see a failed attempt at chivalry. I'd still rather let them see a successful attempt.

But whether we give them back or not is unrelated. For now, they're still in our care, and the squires are too, so why not take care of both at the same time ?
>>
Bump for glorious Karban!
>>
I vote for keeping the girls even after their Oldtown trip. However, I say we shouldn't "play Princess Maker" with them, just keep them fed and clothed. Raise them properly and when they are old enough, marry them off.
>>
>>20441008
I feel that it's a better idea to give them over to the Redwynes. They have obvious antipathy towards us, and I seem to remember they liked Dalyna pretty well.
>>
>>20441008
And risk them plotting against us because every day with us keeps the wounds of loosing their family open? Rather put them into the care of a woman with style and lots of experience in distracting herself and others. Its our best bet of them loosing their grudge.
>>
>>20441083
I don't think that being with us keeps their wounds more open than being with the the guy who ordered the expedition to their islands and the death and exile of their remaining family.

The truth is that they will never forget what happened. You don't forget how your family got destroyed. And they will never forgive us unless we give them a reason to. To do so, we'll have to interact with them.

I don't think they're much of a threat either way, though.
>>
>>20441156
>>20441068
>>20441083
Here's what I say:
If there's one thing that Karban is good at, it's MONEY FOR DAYS.
We've tried caring for the girls, and it's had...mixed results. Remember the scene with Terris and one of them? Yes, over time, we could get them to like us. But what we need are people who like us that they'll listen to. Who fucking loves us? The Redwynes. What we should do is let them go with Dalyna, and ask them on their return if they want to stay with her. If they say yes, we arrange with Dalyna to share the cost of the raising the girls, maybe providing a dowry, etc. They'll spend their days with a girl who's infatuated with us, and a man who thinks of us as the best thing since sliced bread. Any time they need a new dress, they'll know we paid for it. We'll swing by every now and again, and always treat them with perfect courtesy and warmth.

Basically, we need to move from "Overbearing father figure" to "That awesome uncle."
>>
>>20441083
>>20441068
>Only speak to them meaningfully every few months.
>Wonders why they haven't warmed up to use at all.

Let them take vacations when they are offered, and we need to see how they react when they have their stuff and their old serving staff(likely friends) back. Also actively talking to them more should help.

If they still hate us after let's say a year of that, then I might send them off for good.

They can still be quite valuable to us, noble ladies, even from disgraced families, are held in pretty high regard. They could catch the eye of a knight, a powerful trader etc.

The only "trouble" we have keeping them here is room and board, which is so small it doesn't even register on our radar. They are girls, not fucking faceless men.
>>
>>20441156
Karban is the guy they saw crashing through their door in a bloody armor and sword in hand, litterally for the older sister. The younger has the trauma of her crazy mother trying to kill her, a memory in which we feature prominently.

They warm up to the boys, true, but they could met nice people at Paxter's court too, and they didn't saw him prancing around like us. And Dalyna would look after them much better like us (and would find them better marriage matches than we could find ourselves).
>>
>>20441263
>much better like us
than*
>>
If we give them away they will always remember us as the man who broke their family. In ten years they might decide that the time is ripe for them to have their vengeance and kill Karban, his wife (I personally prefer Veronica), and children. If we keep them, we can keep an eye on them. Then again, in ten years they might be married to a minor knight in the north, good luck getting back to Arbor then.

I think >>20441243 has it right. Emphasis on the *ask* them if they want to live with Dalyna part.
>>

>>
>>20441404

> In ten years they might decide that the time is ripe for them to have their vengeance and kill Karban, his wife (I personally prefer Veronica), and children

With what money, influence, or men? The Clawwaters were a minor house to begin with, but since Karban destroyed their house, they're harmless.

Just get rid of the girls and be done with it. Give them to Dalyna, have them meet Unfortunate Accidents, what exactly are they accomplishing by being in Karban's care? What do we HOPE to accomplish with them?
>>
>>20441578

To hammer this home; The Starks, the most lawful stupid House in Westeros took Theon in purely because he was the sole male heir of House Greyjoy, which was a major house in and of itself and was meant to keep the Cthulhu Vikings from getting ideas about rape and pillage. Even the Starks had a selfish purpose for keeping the children of a defeated king...

... So what's our reason for keeping the Clawwater daughters?
>>
>>20441404
Yes, the asking was an important part. I think we need to sit down with them, and say something to the effect of:
"Girls, I wish to be blunt. I don't think you're happy here. And I am sorry for that. After the trial, I volunteered to have you as my wards in the hopes of alleviating some of your pain. I had, in no small part, taken from you a family, a home, and left you with nowhere, and no one. Having come to the Arbor just recently, with only my personal guard, I felt I knew some of what you suffered, and hoped to provide for you a place to heal. But, in my folly, I did not know just how much of my time would be consumed in ensuring the proper growth of my people and lands, and so I have been distant. Lady Redwyne has suggested that she could take you with her back to her home, where you would live among ladies, and the court proper. If you wish to go with her, I shall make arrangements so that your servants and possessions are all moved to your new home. I would provide for your upkeep, and maybe, in the fullness of time, pay for your wedding. If you wish to remain here, I cannot say I will spend more time with you, but I will strive to make Saltmouth a place you can be happy and comfortable. I will try to make this a place of life, and joy. In either case, know that I only want the best for you, and I pray for your future."

Nothing makes people like you better than a well-phrased apology, and a promise of future benefit. Either way, we show that we were just trying to be the good guy, and hopefully we make an impact on them.

PrincelyDM already covered that, we can give them back to the Redwynes without any loss of honor. Having tried to take care of them is enough to show us in a good light.

>Personal integrity?
We ensured they weren't raped dured the battle, we didn't sack their island, we saved the little sister's life, we let them talk to their brothers one last time before they went to the Wall... Our "personnal integrity" is not in danger in any way.

>Bargaining tools if you don't like the other two?

First, Karban Fuck Yeah!

Ok, we need the spy network 'Silk Guard' (a good name as any) yesterday. To much fucked up shit going on in the arbor and then in westeros for the time being and we cant stay with the head in the sand.

As for the girls we might as well keep them for a while and see how it goes, for a year or so before deciding. Its a good character development imho and not just pure munchkinising.

As for the increasing foreign population, fucking awesome. Lets see if we can get them to identify more and more as Saltmouther, Karban People, or Arbor men. We might even get troops that waterdance - great for doing light marine type work, agent stuff for the silk guard and police stuff that wont allow one to hammer in with full plate everywhere.

Then, We were promised some reliefe for Karbans needs. He is not a fucking hermit, and i bet he had a easier time with girls than as a lord. Lets have some tension flow out. I bet we are way to full of it.
>>
its been 11 hours since Princely left.

Has he gone again for good?
>>20442156
also fuck indeed.

Since four sessions and one month this is getting postponed.

Next time the Guy with the whole smirking girl going Anal pics turns up i am siding with him, highborn or not. Karban is more of a slippery as fuck adventures at high sea kind of guy full of life not a hermit.

I return. bearing goodies and treasures! Thanks for giving me some time guys. I needed the sleep real fucking bad. Now strap in. Minimum 14 hours of the quest incoming, allowing for a break when I have to drop by my parent's place to help them move a piece of furniture.

New Pastebin, part 1: http://pastebin.com/V6YXwWLs
The secondary part is being polished right now... So expect it some time today or tonight. So lets get into this.

So with our ships preparing to bring word and new supplies towards the isles, that matter will soon be working itself out. A serious question is forming in your minds, however. With Ser Wallgrave and most of the soldiers returning, it leaves Caswell and his marines as the sole outside authority, backed up by two hundred guardsmen. Perhaps this might be a good time for Ser Crane to begin his trial rulership?

>Wat do with Ser Crane?
>>
>>20442822

Lets talk with him about it, I mean I can imagine been without Ser Crane.
>>
>>20442822
Teach him all we know about dealing with a father's protective streak

>>20442822
Sweet, sweet goodies.

I remember we do have a mine or two. the money machine must get cracking and after doing the spy network and army minimum of upgrades we should get to breakwaters (incoming winter) and drydock and spicers warft to get more money, and then run smelter, extended and advanced mineworks.

Industrialization ahoy! Lets play Industrial Giant Westeros Edition.
>>
>>20441715
I agree with this, but there's several things left unsaid here that need to be reminded to the girls.

"You're now landless nobles, and women. Your brothers are on the wall, and your parents are dead. If I send you to Dalyna, she'll welcome you, but your lives are set to be pretty grim thereafter : you'll be separated to be married off to some impoverished nobles, that you might never love and who will probably treat you as a more or less valued piece of property. You're likely to never see their brothers again.
I am not the best company you can find in Westeros, but I saw that I am not the worst either. I believe I can make your futures better.
As long as you stay my wards, in name only, I can ensure that you won't be separated until you decide to, and will be married when you decide to.
But if you decide to stay with me, I can offer you a greater choice, not only of potential husbands, but in your lives from now on. I can have you trained and taught in various fields, according to your abilities and your preference, and regardless of your gender. Then I'll employ you in my house, or fund your own ventures, to ensure your relative independance. You'll get to meet and know people of various stations and walks of life. And more importantly, you'll be able to stay close to another into your adult life, and I will bring you to visit you brothers periodically."
>>
>>20442872
You find him in the practice yard, dressed in leathers and a linen shirt, drenched in sweat. Iylaria, Reff, and Ser Cordwayner are there as well, naked steel in their hands as they go through basic warm-ups to bring themselves down from the intense blade practice they just finished. They make a weird collection, but you also know that perhaps they are your best fighters, each one worth five other men.

You bring with you a flagon of cooled wine, which they eagerly thank you for as they fill plain wooden cups. You peel Ser Crane away from the rest of the group, walking along the outer edge of the yard, passing the stables as several servants work on brushing and caring for the nearly forty or so horses you keep within the walls. Crane finishes his cup and pats his horse, a big brown monster from House Rowan stock.

"My lord? What did you want to talk about?"

How many bustling harbours are there on the Arbor ?
Are problems of competition taken into account ?
>>
>>20443156
None. Only Oldtown and Kings Landing are nearby.

Also I dont know how many busty marketplaces there are, but that should be the first we should go for and not the harbour, since that one is far pricier, thus netting a slower wealth uptake for the upgrade period to Bustling Markets&Harbour.

>>20443130
Yeah Gothic 2 is the awesome, i play it every two years for six years or so. I even get the German edition to play the various mods too. Vayla mod is awesome for a continuation on the Island story, after the Nameless goes. Even has Subtitles in English.
>>
>>20443201
>after the Nameless goes.
After the Nameless steals the Shit out of the only frigate in port from under the nose of a entire chapter of knights, Paladins and Militia with a gaggle of mercenaries, dragon hunters,l fire monks and other riff raff and the aid of a Court Order blackmailed out of a Judge.
>>
>>20443156
There is only one: Ryamsport, the largest city on the Arbor, and the seat of House Redwyne. And while the competition certainly wouldn't be overly appreciated, we are on the exact other side of the island... And besides, Ryamsport has one thing that no other port on all of Essos has. All wines from Redwyne lands (so basically 75-85% of all the Arbor's wine) MUST leave through Ryamsport.

>>20443118
When we broach the subject with Crane, he rises to the challenge. "My lord, if you would place your trust in me, I will do everything in my power to ensure that your will is done. Whatever you command, I shall do. It would be my honor to be your representative and to act in your name." You go over a quick version of what he would probably need to do, and he listens intently. He has a good mind for numbers and figures, and you are sure that he would follow your commands like they were dogma from a septon. He has the smarts to deal with anything that comes up, and the wisdom to write for advice if he sees that it is too big for him to handle alone.

Ask him to send us ravens regularily during first year. He should try to find someone on the islands to write up long reports about the progress he makes. I trust him to do well, but I think we should coordinate our efforts here and there, so a lot of shared information would be useful.

Talk with him about our projects regarding the seals, the forest, etc.
As for the traditional activities of the islanders, I don't think we should change things too early, but it'd be good to study how things work in the perspective of improving the division and organization of labour.
>>
>>20443342

We save the money and nothing bad happens we can buy the more expensive upgrades more easier.
>>
>>20443357

You make sure Coyle has your household focused on helping get Crane ready for the move. The tide leaves on the morrow, and Crane wants very much to be on those ships then. He will be taking a small number of folks with him, along with some additional furniture and the contents of his chambers.

That night, you and your castle raises a pretty decent celebration. Wine-boiled pheasant is served with roasted turnips in a butter sauce, several different kinds of pies are served with the mutton ones being the biggest hit, and fried cod on beds of milled grains and capers. Several (or perhaps several dozen) toasts are raised to Ser Crane, and everyone separates in high spirits, tempered with a bit of sadness. You see him off at the docks with most of the Steel Guard as well, more friends saying goodbye than a lord sending off a trusted agent.

Also, I like the idea of speculating with food during winter, if it's possible or feasible to do so. Let's make sure we buy the food from Arbormen but sell food to the mainland.

That is actually a really good plan. And prices on food go up... I mean, it is just a slight uptick during a normal winter. Even eighteen months to two years can be handled pretty easily. This is Westeros, after all, and people plan for this shit very seriously... However, a long winter of around three to four years can make shit really hard. Smallfolk suffer pretty bad in such cases, and even the nobility start going to bed with a less than full stomach. Anything over five years, and shit gets really bad. Noble houses sell of anything they have left, and the smallfolk are really at the mercy of time by that point.... But in the last hundred years, only two winters have lasted more than three or so years.

>>20443458
Crane and his ships will make good time, with the wind at their back helping to drive them through the choppy, dark waters. He has the additional marines Caswell wanted, and supplies for the men to hold the keep.

With him gone, there is a notable absence. You continue to keep up much of your training, engaging in bladework against the Steel Guard, two at a time. Terris and Lucas serve under the instruction of Sers Cargill and Cargill, each beginning to understand the basics of the joust. You and your knights also practice at the lists, as the Oldtown tourney looms just four months away. The last harvest is expected to be in three months, and you occasionally find yourself holding your breath on the matter... It all depends on the rains and the Mother's mercy at this point.

We should start by thinking of a way to control a spy network.
Littlefinger owns his whores and the place they live in.

How can we do it ?

And do the Redwynes have something like that ? Paxter being our bro, maybe pooling our ressources on that could be good.

Well if we do try to make ourselves well known for supplying food why not open a bunch of taverns which supply good food for cheap? We can make our name selling a bit more up market fair to the dock workers and sailors and think about how much they gossip when in their cups.

Well, nothing we can really do about the harvest except to hope and wait.

How are the men from the Free Cities integrating into Saltmouth?

Also, how do you guys feel about a resettlement program for when Ole Redwyne kicks the bucket and grants us a shitload of land?

We offer any free men overseas 10 acres of good wine country so long as they sell only to us, etc etc?

This kind of stuff has always gone extremely well in the real world, at least.

>>
>>20443460

I think now's as good a time as any to note that the spy networks we've encountered in the novels are only good for the spymasters, and those who seek to use the services of said networks tend to meet very, very bad ends.

Creating a spy network is the last thing we should be doing; at best it'll be able to tell us a neat little fact or two to get an advantage over a lord, but at worst it'll develop a mind of it's own and actively plot against us.
>>
>>20443612

This! I like this I idea better than just spending 15 wealth and hope for the best. We own the taverns, we chose who works there, we provided the food and the drink. We have direct control over them.
>>
>>20443638
A good idea would be to specifiy what we mean by spy network.

I just want a large net of informants to pass us off nice bits of information of interest but that we can't actively control. Basically we stay informed of goings on we otherwise wouldn't hear about but don't actively point at targets and say I want to know ever dirty secret they have.

>Not rolling d100s again this thread.
>>
>>20443593
That might be a bad idea. The less people know about our spies, the more effective they would be.

Meanwhile, your loss with Ser Crane is replaced with the triumphant homecoming of Ser Rory Wallgrave. The archers and spearmen in his command are happy to be home, and you know that all the coin spent in the winesinks and brothels will be good for the whores and serving girls... If they survive the attention, that is. Ser Rory is happy to be home again, and makes japes with Ser Laurence about the training standards that have been in place in his absence. You are just happy to have one of your best men home again.

Meanwhile, the rains and fogs continue to soak the coast to the bone. Having Ser Wallgrave home, however, enables you to discuss much about the state of the islands. The people there are preparing for the winter storms, and many have dug out deeper, more sturdy cellars to hold all the produce and grain that they will purchase from Saltmouth after the harvest. The people are mostly happy, and Caswell's constant patrols has kept criminals and pirates well away. Smuggling might be another thing, as a good smuggler is never caught, but Wallgrave is quite sure that Caswell is doing his best to keep any of those men under his thumb... He may be a bit of a rogue, but he serves you and has done so with loyalty all this time.

A lot of informants and perhaps one or two area officers that are trustworthy, like a good friend of someone from the steel guard, a smuggler that is quite ok-ish, a certain captain or even a noble (possible use for the clawwatter girls, since they are the only ones we could use as such without suspicion.)

So, basically like a RL spy rig. Lots of information sources, one area/op handler.

Most likely, and preferably informants have no idea who they work for and without the proper resonances in the middle of the conversation they would be going in misinformation mode or something, to prevent hostile takeover.
>>
>>20443719

>or even a noble (possible use for the clawwatter girls, since they are the only ones we could use as such without suspicion.)

>>20443719

Running the two at a later date in parallel might be quite a good way to make them a potent tool.

Start with the taverns and then do the intel op adaptation, once we want to have a proper set-up. they should be oblivious of the other and if found out the intel op would report they serve different masters, thus making the illusion that we own only half in intel assets than we have, if found out, and have to play the game.

Law sounds good as well.
>>
>>20443846
That is how it works. Jailing someone for a long period is kinda unheard of. You just slap them in a jail cell until you get around to dealing with them. Stealing could mean losing a hand. Raping means castration. Murder, arson, and treachery all have death as a punishment... This is Medieval justice, after all. It can be harsh.

Wealth, Power, and Law seem to be the clear winners. Roll me that d6 for the Karban Money Machine.

I don't think we need more power. We're not threatened by anyone that our forces will be insufficient to deal with. And if we ever are faced with an actual army, we can count on the help of Paxter.

>>
>>20443976
Too fucking long. And that hot little redhead piece keeps skipping around the kitchens....

The month is filled with a calming monotony. You train in the (now mostly mud) inner yard with the Steel Guard. When recruits complain, Ser Wallgrave just screams at them to stop playing in the mud like they were squalling children, and /gently/ reminds them that a battlefield often turns into a muddy, bloody, shit-covered slice of hell.... It is good to have him back.

Meanwhile, the squires continue their education. Cyvasse is something they aren't entirely familiar with, but Terris seems to pick it up with speed. You are Ben are finding that it is a great way to pass a windy, rainy night. So far, you two are tied at five victories each. A rivalry is brewing. The constant rain has made practicing on the lists nearly impossible, but every few days you and your nights make the trip out there to keep your skills sharp. Construction all across Saltmouth continues, and you are pleased with their progress. Perhaps the best news you hear, however, comes from the countryside. So far, there has been no frost and the harvest will be exactly what people need to calm any fears of a thin winter.

>Roll 1d20 for random occurrence.
>>
>>20444057
>>20444037

Hmmm maybe we could recruit another unit to keep population down. And give some work to those without a job during winter. I could also recommend to check on the social situation on Saltmouth just to see how the immigrants are being integrated into the community, we have some unruly individuals that believe themselves above our laws breaking a few knees could be a good example.

>>20444047
We indeed have a foreman.
>>
>>20444072
I still don't think Power and Defense should be our priority. We don't have any reason to think that our men and our walls will see much use. Even with metagame knowledge, we know won't fight here. If we go for power, Drydocks would prove much more useful.

>Well, when our neighbors have armies twice the size of ours i think it is time to invest into the army. We need at least thousand men at arms plus two hundred cavalerists to stand a chance
But why would we fight them ? Portain is our friend, Cargill is too. We might want to march into West Cargill territory after we've married V, but at that time we'll have the support of the East Cargill army.
Why buy and maintain our own army, when we can use that of Cargill or Paxter ?

Seriously, we can spare some coin on that point.

Anyways, you get a raven one afternoon, the poor waterlogged bird half-soaking Ben as he attends to it in the rookery. The letter is from Paxter, informing you that he should be sailing into Saltmouth in roughly a week, with his sister and a portion of his household. He will only linger for a few days, before leaving with the tide for Oldtown. His sister is also excited to bring the Clawwater girls to Oldtown, as they will be staying with her and her ladies.

Coyle takes the news well, as the rumors of a good harvest have relaxed his fears of starving to death in cold, silent halls. He promises to rally the kitchen staff to put on a meal worth the arrival of your liege... There are two barrels of dry, fruity Dornish red that should compliment lamb just perfectly. Your trio slips through the night time crowds and the smoke-wreathed drinking halls as you make your way to the now-familiar taphouse. A single gold dragon slipped into the hand of a serving girl gets you ushered upstairs, where Lady Jeyne is reading a small stack of letters. She looks up at you, and smiles. "My lord, it is good to see you again.... I was looking for an excuse to put aside this tedious work." The serving girl cleans away the clutter on the table and brings ale. "Purchase orders for wine and beer, a common task that I so loathe... So tell me what brings you to my humble halls, my lord? My pleasant company, I am sure."
>>
>>20444552
I can't get enough of your soothing voice.
>>
>>20444552
Well I personally happen to like paperwork. It's calming.

It is good to see you again, and your company is one of the primary reasons I come to visit you. But first I am interested in hearing your lovely voice speak of perhaps less than lovely things.
>>
>>20444552
I've received a disturbing letter from a friend of mine, Lord Portain. Have you heard of any discontent amongst his smallfolk?
>>
>>20444552
Huh y'know Lady Jayne might be just the person we're looking for to start up our tavern enterprise.
>>
>>20444615

This, also:

"I have heard rumours that there is... unrest in my neighbors, Lord Portains, lands. I need to know everything you can tell me about these unfortunates events."
>>
>>20444391

Dear Jeyne, I need to know what your ears have heard about Portain lands is their something amiss going on with the population? And I could like to know how Saltmouth has been receiving its current influx in immigrants I couldn't not like hear about some pentosy or bravos crime baron trying to make my city his new territory.
>>
>>20444662
>>20444643
Also ask if she knows anything about a group moving in to the old smuggling hide outs.
>>
>>20444549
>>20444536
It is good to be back. And looking back on the threads, you are right. That old crotchety bastard should be showing up sometime soon. Once he arrives, that iron mine should really jump up in output.... And more iron means more materials for your blacksmiths to work with. The weapons and armor of your soldiers could use some patching, and a couple barge loads of iron ore would do wonders for speeding that along.

>>20444589
She smiles at that. "My lord, you are a terrible flatterer. And we all know it isn't my voice that brings you here...." She drags, slowly, her finger along the bodice of her dress. Her eyes never leave yours, and you only slip up for a moment... She might have been expecting a bit more of a reaction, because the next sentence spills out with speed. "It is for all those wonderful secrets I tell you. So tell me, my dear lord... What brings you here?" When we ask her about the state of Lord Portain's lands, she leans back to ponder. "... I haven't heard such things. Now, there are always those who complain against the lordly. But nothing more than a few disaffected drunks have had poor things to say. In fact, you are the first person to come to me with such a story." Her eyes are alight now. "Tell me, my lord... Who whispered such a thing to you? I would so dearly love to know."

>Wat say?
>>
>>20444496
I wouldn't present the offer quite yet, if after their vacations and some time back with their old servants/belongings if they still aren't happy then I would give them the offer.
>>

>>
>>20444689
Disappointing...

Any news on the cargill daughters' lack of husbands ?
>>
>>20444689
Just as some whisper to you that would not whisper to me there are some who would talk to me who wouldn't pass things to you. That is why I chose to work with you.

For now it is but a song and a vague rumor, if you hear anything else please let me know.

Have you heard of any smuggling groups using any of the old hideouts in the forest that I once cleared?
>>
>>20444737
good one.
>>
Maybe we should start having sex regularily.
It might lead her to believe that she has more inflluence over us. And I bet we're better at pillowtalk than she is.
And it would mean we finally have sex. And possibly bastard-less sex.
>>
>>20444740
>>20444715
>>20444737
She smiles at that. "A little raven, perhaps? And for such a kind gesture, I will grant you a free answer. As you can imagine, this outfit lacks a good place to store a few coins. So I am afraid a trade will have to suit you."

>>20444748
"I was able to uncover a few things I knew your lordship would enjoy to know. The three suitors were all lost soon after, or even during, their time courting the young Lady Veronica, were they not? A hunting accident undid the first, while the second slipped and fell from the great stone bridges that connect the Cargill's hall to the city beneath the falls. The third and final suitor died in his bed, face puffy and swollen, his lips changed to a dark, deathly color. Such a pity... The poor girl. She must be wracked with guilt. Well, I have hear the names of all the men involved with the hunting accident that laid low the young Merrywind suitor. It might be rather useful in your hands, I believe." Jeyne hands over a small slip of paper, with perhaps a half-dozen names on it. You tuck the paper into your doublet, safe behind the black, quilted linen and in a hidden pocket.

>Anything else?
>>
>>20444838

>>
>>20444852
I assume you're saying ask about the state of crime in the city and the general state of the immigrants and natives working together? Because she already said she didn't know of any discontent in Portain lands.
>>
>>20444838
Mention that you might be looking to open up a few inns and if she might know some people who would be interested in such a prospect.
>Try to entice her to take a hand in the operation, the more reasons she has to like us and be loyal to us the better.
>>
>>20444875

yes
>>
>>20444852

Along with this I say we ask about Dalyana's possible suitors, might as well be well informed about our options, maybe ask about the old Cargill uncles health while we are at it too.
>>
>>20444838
I can very well imagine what your outfit stores.

I've been thinking about creating more inns within Saltmouth, both for the common folk and for merchants and rich visitors. Places for people to eat, drink, rest and talk more than they ought to. Would you happen to have any interest in such a project?
>>
>>20444662
That makes her scowl for a moment. "Some of those Free City bastards pretend to not know what a tab is... But most of them are nothing more than what they seem: Braavos and tradesmen and merchants and moneychangers. They dress strange and use stranger words, but they have drawn no ire from me. If there are to be criminals in their number, they have been rather successful at hiding, as of yet." When you question here about that, she points towards the small window. "You may not remember, but you ordered three grifters from Old Ghis hanged for trying to cheat a tanner from the Reach. You would be a fool to travel all the way across the world, paying good gold for the trip, only to be hanged for being a fool."

>>20444910
She teases you about that. "My lord would want me to play barmaid? Judging by that saucy little blonde you took with you last harvest, that might be all I need to do to draw those pretty brown eyes..."

>>20444909
She teases you a bit more. "Oh? The lovely lady Dalyna Redwyne? I am sure her suitors would be numerous, if any would last for more than a few moments. She is destined for a political marriage, I fear. Her hand would ensure the loyalty of any house that wasn't a Hightower or Tyrell."
>>
>>20445019

As much as I'd love to see you in the outfit, I don't think serving others would be something that comes naturally to you my dear. Of course you could always try to prove me wrong.....
>>
>>20445019
"Nothing specific, huh ?"

Well, guys, I think we should talk about it with Paxter. We could complain about the worries of choosing a bride without knowing her character, and the problem of love against interests. Ask him with a bit of subtelty (we don't want to make our interest known) how he dealt with this for himself, and how he plans to for his sister.
>>
>>20445019
Why my Lady now you play the flatterer, do my, eyes so hold your interest?

Good to know that the law is being upheld. I want to see Saltmouth prosper it will be harder with weeds clawing away at it when ever I turn my gaze away.
>>
>>20445019
If I was looking for barmaids I wouldn't have come to you for this, though it would be a rare pleasure to see you in their outfit.

I would have you play administrator and ensure that all of the information those places could provide was properly gathered.

If you are interested in drawing my pretty brown eyes you should know that I find intelligence, competence and ambition incredibly attractive.

We engage in some more flirting and talking. She brings in a small plate of fresh baked breads, salty cheeses in a brilliant yellow, and fried slices of pork and bacon from the kitchens out back. The two of you spend perhaps another hour in one anothers company, playing cyvasse and drinking a few cups of wine as you talk about the city. She is, apparently, very interested in why Saltmouth is gathering its strength... You know she is mining you some information, so you endeavor to be both charming and evasive.

Two days in a row I come home to /tg/ and Karban is on. No words can describe my delight.

And wow, we're rolling terribly. How about some RPing to get a bonus?

"You ask why our armed forces are growing? Look about you, Lady Jeyne. Three years ago Saltmouth was a fair sized town. Now it is a small town on its way to becoming one of the major port cities of Westeros. Hundreds of people from all over the world flock to our city, and more money flows through our fair city than exists in Castlerly Rock each day. So much money attracts parasites and thieves and larger foes. And that's before you account for Lord Redwyne gifting the Clawwater Isles to me. My luck and Saltmouth's luck is going to attract attention, more than it already has, and not all of it will be a blessing as it has been to date. A larger army will be a deterrent, a chance to buy us enough time to buy out anyone with designs on us."

Is that a royal "us" there? Not intentionally, I assure you!
>>
>>20445341
And all shall be Karban Inns! And woe upon anyone who uses that name!

Anyone new to the city who was at two other Karbans before or weary will always sleep and dine and Karban inns, merchants and regular travellers in the most part, due to convenience. So rumours of dubious credibility should be abundant.

Great to eye out the odd stuff happening relevant on a larger scale and to speculate and scope out business opportunities.
>>
>>20445341
>>20445324
Putting in whores as a regular fixture might not be the best plan. It undermines our classiness and it might do damage to our rep if it's known that we actively encourage whoring. Any barmaids who do it on their free time isn't our problem.

Having inns spread around with a reputation for quality could be good, we could franchise it out to places outside our personal sphere of influence. Big travelers will always know that our inns are solid choices so if we keep people there to listen we could get a lot of information.

Yep. God damn internet issues, like usual. I want to kill my provider. And to think I am stuck with them for another fourteen months? Bah.

We dance around the question, if in-artfully. Definitely need a little bit of practice at this. However, it is a fine night. Reff may be getting a little stir crazy, but everything goes just fine and you eventually part company with the lovely Jeyne.

The walk back through the city leaves you in a thinking mood. Jeyne is certainly a good resource, but perhaps several men, loyal to you, would be a worthwhile investment. You would need to scatter them far and wide, however, for them to be what you would want... Perhaps they could be owners or serving men in winesinks, brothels, and drinking houses near the water all across the Narrow Sea, the Redwyne Strait, and the Arm of Dorne. Such a collection of men would number two score at most, but would be in position to hear rumors, gossip, and secrets from most of the Free Cities and all the major hubs of the Seven Kingdoms. They would not be spies, no... A spy is a man sent on a mission, dispatched with intent and target. These men would be more like a disperse set of ears, inquisitive minds who would sort through the bluster and lies of seamen and the scattered populations of man for anything that could give you an edge... Early news of a disaster or drought? Perhaps first news of the birth of an heir or the death of a lord? Maybe the demise of a great merchant or respected holy man? It is much to think about, and you spend most of the trip up the river in silence, deep in thought.

The days are gloomy and wet, a constant drizzle out of the east soaking anyone who spends too much time outside.... It is the worst kind of rain, slow and fat and relentless. The wind it tepid at best, blowing fitfully from the south. You are sure that Paxter is absolutely loving his slow, damp sail north. Dalyna will be stir-crazy by the time they dock in your city... Which might not be a bad thing.

The raven from Portain is gloomy as well. His son is sick with a cough caused by the damp. The infant is not well at all, and his wife is riven with guilt and terror. He cannot bring himself to leave her behind while he goes to feast. He can barely find the will to attend to his many duties, as he spends most nights watching over the child in his small bedchamber, constantly tending a fire to ward off the wet chill. You instead find ways to pass the time and distract yourself from the depressing realities of winter on the Arbor. Cyvasse and wine fill many nights, as does indoor sword practice with the Steel Guard, Terris, and Lucas. Lucas has the makings of a fine swordsmen, and the natural build of a knight. You are pleased that Ser Cargill has recognized that, and is drilling the boy hard to excel. Terris is no slouch with a blade, but it is his mind that you find yourself valuing. The boy is learning quickly, and he reads well under the tutorship of Ben. Perhaps he has a fine enough mind to be able to serve in a more independent capacity as he ages? His father might not understand it, but he was always a traditionalist in his thinking.
>>
>>20445420
Isn't it *highly* unusual for nobles to be engaged in business? The concept of franchising doesn't exist yet, either. Westeros needs a better communications system before any of that is really possible.

While I'm at it, I should clarify my vision for the Silk Guard. These aren't spies or a spy network, since as someone pointed out, only the people running the spy networks get any advantage out of them, the people employing the spies tend to get shafted. What I want is the Steel Guard except with ninjas. Not the pajama wearers, but the infiltrators, couriers and courtiers with a martial bent who happen to know people who know people who know how to get information. But we also want bros and fembros, a la Steel Guard.

>>20445820 Cont.
The Redwyne ships finally make themselves seen eight days later, gliding into port on the first decent breeze in a month. Five clean, fast-looking galleys flying the brilliant colors of the house. You have a portion if the Steel Guard and nearly fifty of your spearmen escort the party to your gates, where you greet them with wine and smiles. You hope that your image is that of the lord you aspire to be: A demicape of the dark blue of your house to compliment the black doublet, which serves to enhance the polished silver of your favorite necklace. You smile as Paxter and Dalyna dismount, greeting Paxter with a bent knee and bowed head, while he is laughing about the sorry state of the gatehouse above you. "Karban, that pitiful thing couldn't stop a score of old crones!" You just smile, and greet your lord as you stand. Dalyna is about four or five steps behind, looking for all the worlds like a story of a princess from before the coming of the Andals. Her hair is up and back, with a delicate headband of silver and pearls. Her dress is a clash of dark brown and sand, falling in layers over her delicate figure. She simply smiles sweetly, before begging your hospitality and company. You gladly consent, and welcome the rest of the party inside, out of the cold and damp and into the warm hall you have readiest. Musicians and serving girls spread sweet songs and mulled wine to the guests, as you and Paxter head up towards your solar to talk in private.
