Four weeks ago, my family got in the car to meet some family friends for dinner at a local restaurant. I was sick with the stomach flu, so I stayed home. About an hour after they left, the police showed up at my house. An officer knocked on the front door and told me that my family had all been killed in an auto accident by a drunk driver, their bodies were being taken to a funeral home, was there anyone I could call, could they call anyone for me, et cetera. Long story and thousands of tears short, I buried them last Sunday.

So I met with a lawyer today, who told me some interesting things. Both my father and mother had large life insurance policies, as did my brother through his job. So after taxes, I am now worth over $800,000, which does not include the house and two remaining cars. If I sell those, I can easily be worth over a million.

The problem is, I don't know what to do with myself. I'm a college student three semesters from graduation. I don't have any really close friends, no hobbies that truly engage me. If I fell off the earth, no one would really care. Not longer than a week, anyways.

So, /tg/, I want you to tell me what to do with my inheritance. I can hear you already. "Buy traditional games!" or "save it and live frugally, you can be set for life if you invest well" or "two chicks at the same time" or "make a full-time LARP arena, that'd be awesome!" or "overdose on narcotics."

The truth is, I don't want to do anything like that. I want to do something bold. Something a character would do.

/tg/, my family is dead and I am the only survivor. Tell me what to do with my life.

The pic is hopefully inspiring for adventure?

Your destiny man, you are an adventurer now. First off, get fit. If you aren't fit now, get fit. Learn how to fight with a few different sorts of weapons, how to climb mountains, how to camp like a professional and how to cook and eat anything. Learn the flora and the fauna of the world and get a pass port. Pick a port of choice, find adventure.

Good luck and godspeed.

First, finish school. Second, set up a bank account, tuck some money into it, and make sure you've got a way to access it even when you're overseas.

Then... pick a spot, go and see it. Walk the Great Wall, see the Devil's Falls, meet old gods in Indian temples, go to 'Murica and eat a hamburger.

Then one day, find a place that you think is paradise, and retire there. Look at your mementos, and your memories, and you write yourself your own version of "There and Back Again, an Anon's Tale."

Spend it on combat training and weaponry.

Embark on a journey south to the border with Mexico, find an impoverished border town beset by the nefarious Drug Cartels and wage a one man guerrilla war with them. Eventually gain allies with the locals and form a rag tag team to defend the innocent.

Assuming you live somewhere in murrica. If not, go engage whatever the nearest evul criminal group you can.
>>

Alternatively, get fit. Pick a city. Become a vigilante in that city. Use your newfound (but tiny in comparison to Batman) fortune to evade both the police and criminals in your relentless pursuit of justice. Become a symbol.

Pay off the mortgage on the house. If that's already been paid, put the majority of your life insurance in a CD and sell one of the cars. Now that you have a level of your basic needs fulfilled, finish school and learn martial arts. Now you are ready.

Since your family was killed by a drunk driver, you must take the law into your own hands. Don a cape and mask and bring justice to those who would put other's lives in danger

Go become a vigilante. Not just any though, a full-on Paladin. You preach the virtues of justness and right to any who will listen, and to any crime you meet, you meet with gun in hand and sword in belt.

Don't just fight criminals. Fight for good.
>>
OP here.

While I can appreciate becoming a vigilante, I can't see myself thriving. I am moderately fit and I enjoy JUSTICE as much as the next man, but realistically, what would I do? Most crimes are petty ones, done by losers on drugs who possess firearms. Do I really want to get shot stopping a guy who is stealing less than 200 dollars from a convenience store? No. If someone could guarantee that I would be fighting the Joker or the Penguin, then that would be something. As is, becoming Batman isn't really feasible.

I like the idea of learning martial arts and traveling the world. What martial arts should I learn? Where should I travel?

To reiterate, I really have no preference where I go or what I do. I am leaving this 95% up to you guys, in this thread, tonight.
>>

I can become your Joker. It's always been something I've wanted to do.

>>

Inventing your own martial art should be the goal. A martial art that's also a marital art. A marital art that uses Dragon Dildos.
>>

>>
You could help a few lowly and poor anons out, donate it to charity, or travel the world. With almost a million dollars you can do just about anything you want. I would highly suggest that you put the majority of it in the bank so you can collect interest on it. Interest on 700k would make it to where every year you only need to take off what accrued in interest to make it through the year.
>>
>>21289755
For reals though, donate your money to a drunk driving charity. Not all of it, but as much as you feel you can afford.

What's your passion? Seriously. What is it that drives your thoughts and you always return to, every time. For me it's game design, I've made my profession out of it. If I was in your position I'd be getting my company off the ground. Since I doubt game design is where your passions lie, find that passion, find that thing you day dream about constantly, and persue it. Grab onto it, and never let it go.

That said, leave yourself a safety net. Sell one of the cars, keep the house, maybe rent out some rooms. Put a good portion of the money into a good bank to build up interest, reinvest the rest.

Then... with what you have left. If you can't figure out what it is that drives you, that catches your passions. Use what remains to travel. Speak with people, find your place, find that passion. Never stop seeking it until you find it. And if you don't find it, be glad that you've seen the world, and maybe helped out everyone you could on the way.
>>

>>21289806

I don't know. Ever since the funeral, I have been debating on what to do with myself. Would getting a girlfriend or wife make me happy? I've never been in a serious relationship and have resigned myself to live forever alone. What about a group of friends, who would probably abuse me for my money? Most people I find really dull, or they find me to be so. I have never been a really social person. Probably why I am soliciting ideas to radically change my life on a traditional games board on 4chan. Because you guys are the only people that really get me.

>>

>>
I'll suggest using it to fix the problems you have yourself.
>my family is dead
Reconnect with your extended family. Cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, nephews, nieces. There are services that help you find your extended family, but you probably know some of them already. They'll help. Additionally, get laid. While it seems very shallow, making a new family is a great way of taking the sting out of losing the one you have. Everybody's parents die, sooner or later, and most people outlive your parents. For you it was sooner, but you can afford to have kids sooner than you expected as well. i'd recommend finishing your studies first, though.

Now, about not having friends. This is very solvable, just hang out with people. Join some game groups, or go to dance classes, or take kung fu lessons, whatever is in a group works. People love having others to talk with, especially if those others have a lot of free time. As long as you don't avoid talking to them, you will gain friends.

Now, about not caring about anything. This is not a problem, really. You clearly care about excitement, since you asked for adventure, but there are simpler avenues for this. Take bungee jumping lessons, skydiving lessons, have fun, etc. Go on vacations in February, when things get dullest (unless you're in Australia, where that's summer).

Most of all, finish your studies and find a job. Yes, you have money now, but a career can take the place of a hobby. It'll give you something to occupy your thoughts.

Or, you know, write a will and bequeath all of your estate to educating children in third-world countries, then kill yourself. Honestly, it isn't important if you do or not, everybody dies eventually.
>>
>>21289950
Oh, and also, put most of the money in the bank, stay out of trouble, and go into politics.

With a college education, a paid off house, and then half a million or more in the bank gaining interest you should be able to go into your chosen career and then after establishing yourself for the mandatory time to prove you aren't a career politician with no skills outside political science, reach out to the county Democratic or Republican committee about running for a state assembly seat.

The best thing is you won't need friends, just to be well-regarded in your profession and have a clean record, and of course, not to be crass, your inspirational life story (see: Joe Biden in this regard).
>>
>>21289952
>invest money

Invest in my Hookah Lounge. Also, come to Ohio, we have a number of fantastic FLGS. Also, my brother died about three months ago. Heroin Overdose, seemingly intentional. Found out he was trafficking, etc, etc. It's been rough.

Honestly? Invest your money, pay off the house and the cars...get your life settled and live comfortably. Your family would have wanted you to start a family of your own rather than squander the money that has come into your possession.

Also invest in my Hookah Lounge. 25k should do it.
>>
>>21289951
Ah. Lets condemn someone who makes a generous donation out of goodwill because they didn't do the greatest possible thing with their money.

OP here again.

I like your answer. I don't really have any passions, outside of reading books. But spending my life in a well-lit room browsing best-sellers on a Kindle is not a life well lived imo, so I've thrown out that possibility.

For those who want me to give money to a drunk driving charity, either raising awareness or doing something more specific, I feel that this would be a poor investment. People are going to make the decision to drive drunk, regardless of whether or not I write a check for a million dollars.

So far the suggestions seem to be either:
- Become Batman
- Become Pseudo-Batman

That about cover it?
>>
OP, I don't know who you are or where you live, but if your story is true, and you ever need someone to talk to, I could provide an email. 5. Move place to place in said country, slowly moving to every region possible
6. Become a nation-wide fear
>>
>>21290002

Pay off the house, finish school, put the money in the bank (live off the interest) and get a entry-position job at a small publishing house. It shouldn't be too hard to work your way up to a low level slush pile reader type, which will give you the opportunity to not only read a variety of interesting stuff, much of which you'd never see otherwise as most will never be published, but you'll also be starting on a potentially long and rewarding career.
>>
>>21289698
More like Bateman.
>>
You have freedom. Sucks about the cost. set up the finances, finish your current schooling. At that point, find something you feel is worth doing, and do it. There are plenty of places in the world that need help, in first world countries, and in the worst hellholes you can find. It's not easy finding what you want to do, but if nothing else, go out and see how people are living, at some point, something will grab you emotionally, something that sticks with you as either to sad or too fucked up to allow to continue. Then you take what you have and work to end it. The world is full of worthy causes and only you can really decide what matters to yourself.

If nothing else, take this advice: Get some grief counselling, it might seem stupid, but it will help.

Thats the best advice I can hand out to you. You only live once (as far as we can tell) so you should make use of it in a way YOU find appropriate.
>>
>>21289730
I have to say, this ^ sounds pretty adequate.
>>
Finish school, get a job, and adopt a child. Give an unfortunate kid the opportunities that your parents gave you.
>>
>>21289582
Find the drunk driver and murder him. Then find whoever sold them the booze and murder them too. If there's somebody who let the drunk dude drive while they were drunk, or who could have been the designated driver but just couldn't be bothered, murder them.

If or when you get caught, plead insanity. Then go for a book and movie deal. Dedicate the proceeds to vigilantism against other drunk drivers.

"But anon, that's moronic!" you'll say. To this I respond: I don't know about that, but I'm damn well sure it's what a PC would do.

OP here again.

There seem to be more themes emerging.

1) Finish your degree.
2) Get grief counseling.
3) Travel and find yourself.
4) Learn unarmed combat.
5) Find a worthy cause and devote yourself to it.

I can get behind this.

Thank you very much, elegant gentlemen. I'll keep an eye on the thread, but this should keep me busy for at least my last three semesters.

>murdering the booze seller seems a tad excessive

What part of "suggest things a character would do" did you not understand?
>>
>>21290132
I'd assume it goes without saying, but devote yourself to school (and possibly grief counseling) first. Once you've got your diploma, do all the other things. Unless, that is, you feel capable of doing them all at once

my characters probably wouldn't do that

I honestly can't tell if this is a troll thread. I hope it is, but honestly? I'm not that optimistic.
>>21289582
Well, in real life, you can't just work your way up to level seventeen with your buddies and change the sociopolitical landscape forever. If it were me, I'd try to fulfill my best guess at what my family would have wished for me.

But if you're looking for adventure, consider extreme sports, or maybe the clergy, depending on what kind of character you prefer to play. Personally, I recommend music or poetry or something; some kind of personal expression.

And what this guy said>>21289968, except for that last part, obviously.
>>
>>21290002
I'm saying you go and FIND that passion, that way you want to make the world better.

Reading isn't a passion, it's not how you want to spend your entire life. You already said that in your own thing. EG: It's not your passion.

Fuck becoming batman. We got enough crazy vigilantes and you don't have the budget or the influence to pull it off anyway.

Go become goddamn Indiana Jones. Travel the world, investigate as much as you can. Find your passion, and work to make the world a better place.
>>
>>21290132
Okay, since it looks like you're actually serious, I'll stop trolling and get serious myself.

When you travel, do one of those six-month around-the-world cruises. You have the money and time for it, and assuming you don't have any other languages aside from English it's the best way to see as much as you can. If you do have another language, go somewhere it would be useful and just wander.

If you want to stay in the States (I'm assuming you're American here, if you're not then this is less useful), go for the Amtrak pass that gives you a month or so of more-or-less unlimited travel and use that to see as much of the country as you can.

And yeah, get laid. It can't hurt. I recommend Mardi Gras in New Orleans or spring break somewhere on the Florida or Texas coastlines for a place to just have some fun without an emotional commitment that you're not ready for.

Just MAKE SURE YOU INVEST WISELY-LIKE FIRST> People can piss away $1 million easily (Look at those lottery winners who end up bankrupt a few years later). Prudence and restraint with your chequebook, OP. it will reward you down the line.

Then don't accuse someone donating to one of contributing to the death of children unless you know, those funds are actually going to buy bullets that kill children. Like that Kony 2012 bullshit that went on a few months ago.
>>
Consider a civil suite against the driver who killed your family. Give generously to a charity that fights drunk driving, or start your own. Or use the money to pursue your dreams, do what you want with it. Or, use the money to better yourself train, eat better, get in shape, go out into the world and find ways to use the money to better the world. Become a man, a man who could one day become what we would see as a PC, and wait for the opportunity to be the hero you have roleplayed. When you see that man being beaten by muggers, that girl being assaulted, whose screams go ignored by the world around her, that family trapped in their car, by accident, or through bad luck, and just need a leg up and help from a friend. Become a hero, become a badass. Become the /tg/ PC.

Personally, my crazy dream job would be to clear landmines in third-world countries. If I suddenly found life insurance monies and the family trust passed down to me, I'd sell off what I didn't need, let that money mature for a while, and join the military to get some EOD experience.

HA HA! Tragic origin stories. Most of the moneymaking ideas that come to mind have already been said, but... Study and invest into obscure sciences, perhaps? Lord knows there's plenty of technologies that, while useful, have simply been pushed aside by lazy, greedy magnates and their shittier alternatives simply because it's a more established, easier sell.

Thorium-based nuclear power comes to mind. The stuff is considered a nuisance by the mining industry the world over, and could be used to make massive amounts of power, if anyone gave a damn about it. It's a proven yet unused concept; reason being Thorium can't be refined into nuclear weaponry, whereas the less efficient and less common Uranium can. I think I have an image laying around... One moment.

Here we are. Molten salt reactors. And, for God's sake, don't invest in charity of any kind like some anons are suggesting. Just don't. It would be a massive waste with no returns and little good gleaned from the money put in. Give back to the world somehow, but don't give jack nor shit to charities. Your money might not even go where you think it's going.

Also waiting for more Thorium info.

Although I should add that I'm confused at the people advising OP to invest in technologies and shit. He's not saying he has millions of dollars, yo. A few hundred thousand is unlikely to go far.
>>
>>21290871
Holy shit. We need an open-ended Extend The Human Lifespan kickstarter. Granted, there's no guarantee of actually getting your reward (extra 5 years, extra 10 years, etc), but I think this is a rare case where people will put the money in anyway.

But forever's pretty ambitious. Baby steps of a decade or so at a time.

Also, if we do solve mortality we can really get going on SPACE. Getting out to the stars isn't such a problem when you can indefinitely extend your lifespan.

I am so sorry for your loss. There will never be words that will remove that pain. Time does not cure all wounds, it only numbs them. Do not let this define you. Grow from it and because of it, but never be "that guy with the dead family". live, love, laugh. It is what your family would have wanted.

Take a semester off school. Depression does not mix with school. I know that too well. Take that time to work, hobby, exercise etc. keep yourself productive and busy. Wallowing in pity by having nothing to do will destroy you. Bruce Wayne didnt lay down. He had a goal and became goddamn batman. you need a goal. Be it "build a new army for a table top" "run the perfect PnP game" "become uber fit" "rally against drunk drivers" "go experiance and do the things that I wanted to do" Live for you, not your loss.

Just remember, there is life after loss. There is love in the darkness. There is hope in the despair and kindness in the world's cruelty. You are loved. Remember that. Remember to love yourself. Remember that I love you. You will survive, live, and thrive. Do you know why? Because it is what you were born to do.

Pick a religion and join it, using volunteer work, missionary work, the religious education to get confirmed/officially made a full member of the religion, and the support network it will provide to work through these troubles.

I'm sure the Mormons would be glad to have you and they're just culty enough to take up a lot of your free time but not so culty as to be disadvantageous.

Post here once a week and tell us about your progress. We're going to be here. We're going to listen.

As far as people recommending a martial art, I'd recommend just pulling out the phone book and trying every school that piques your interest. Most legit places will offer at least one free class for you to try out, just try out as many school as you can until you find one you like and then stick with it. There's no one magical style that will make you a great fighter. (But for that I'd recommend either a boxing gym or an MMA gym.)

Dont just hide it in a vault invest, gain stocks that pay back, you can live comfortably forever.

If i was in your position i would pick up an expensive hobby like historical Reenactment, I would love to buy some armor.

I want to become a Politician and shape the fate of nations. But that's beside the point.

I've always wanted to open a Gentleman Club(less FLGS more social club) With wood paneling and a Victorian air. Were you can pay to play on cool tables , buy comics, and talk about guns. And drink alcohol. Also you can pay for premium membership. Minors not allowed. IT WOULD BE FANCY AS FUCK

Take a semester off, then finish your education.
Write a thesis in your field of study.
Donate all of your cash after a few years of work.
Then, move to Northern Alaska or Labrador go live off the land innawoods or in some secluded cabin, then show the might of mother nature you are a proud member of mankind, unafraid of the fury of nature, and most of all NEVER GIVING UP, no matter the shit that gets tossed at you.
Then after about twenty years, write a book on your experiences.

OP's not necessarily depressed. In mourning, upset, etc., no doubt, but depression is essentially a chemical thing.
>>
>>21291501
Yeah, I get that. I was speaking partially from my own experiences. the truth is, there is nothing like that. Mourning doesn't begin to touch this. Upset isn't on the radar. Upset is a goal after something like this.

I'm sorry for your loss OP, and while I know a nameless, faceless guy telling you sorry is worth jack shit, I truly mean it.

I can tell you this, OP. People feel their best when they make others happy. Bring joy to people OP, make it your mission, your quest if you want to think of it that way.

Find people. Visit people in elderly homes or hospitals that have no one that cares for them. Talk with them, talk with strangers, about their problems, their fears. Be the next Mr. Rogers. Be that shining beacon, that light in a cold, dark world.

Donate to charities, volunteer, walk the streets and treat a veteran to a meal. There is nothing so inspiring as random acts of kindness for the sake of altruism.

Maybe at the end, you'll be able to look back on the lives that you've changed, even a little bit, for the better. Take it as the word of one anon.

Good luck, anon. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Parallela is a kickstarter that could use a bunch of money.

It's apparently an incredible advance upon regular chips, and some more money would be really helpful in not only pushing technology forward, but keeping it open-source.

http://kck.st/UGQjG3

My preferred causes aside, whatever you do with the money, save and invest some of it. Get someone who knows what they're doing to help you.

Preferably invest enough of it that you can make it grow, finish your education in the meantime, and apply your expertise and riches to help people.
>>
>>21289582
This is an advice from someone who did some things back in the day that might be best not to mention.... The vigilante idea? Forget it dude. NOT worth it. You'll end up alone and bitter.

Sure, acquire riches, learn how to fight, invest wisely, get bitches, and definitely get that motherfucker in the most harsh jail you can because he'll do it again as will his children. Just don't go vigilante.

Right now you will suffer some disconnection from reality. Why? Because you have an unexpected windfall and your ties to everything are severed. Also your mind is on the defensive to keep back the strangeness, rite now everything looks like a sandbox game. Protip: It already was. If you didn't pursued your wildest dreams at least a little bit before this happened, maybe you aren't ready for it yet.

"Something a character would do" is always cool, but first you must be able to live on "As a rational person would". It's a transition from earth to universe. Your money isn't really that much man, it will help you get back at life, but it won't last forever. It's what your parents left for you, to be safe and sound, treat it with respect.

My advice, as everyone else said, finish school first. I wish I had. I'm back but now it's even more bullshit than it was back then. Second, learn to live and thrive by yourself. Spending as little as possible isn't only applicable with money, it also goes for health, effort and anger. Once you crack how to live efficiently have a good job with a decent amount of freedom and resist sickness for at least a whole year you're good to go.
>>
>>21292507
I would then try to invest my money in people who are really worth it, rather than business.
These people be scientists, artists, anyone who has tremendous talent, and protect their passion as if it was your own. You'll always find at least one such person with high alignment in the campus of your uni.
Explain your situation to an old, experienced teacher, he might point you to some cool people. Choose the one you'd bro the most, ask for friendship, test a little their resolve, make it harder; win their heart.

Find this person able and willing to do awesome, then become bros. Finance him/her and give support; in time, you'll get more money than you'll ever get anywhere else, but also an everlasting friendship. Go for the next one, and then other one. By now your initial budget will be dry, but you'll be generating enough to go for the last one.

With a band of five in the correct places you'll have a respectable amount of power, fame and resources to do whatever you desire at a basic level, your money will be used for the greater good and most importantly you'll be wiser than you're now. You might start your own family or your own thorium reactor if you so wish; but most importantly, if you choose your allies carefully, there will be people who'll always love you and take of you.

I have invested much time, effort and money in one person. This fellow has already saved my life twice.
>>
Well, I can't offer any advice. Fuck that is so awful I don't even wanna think about it.
