Fuck me sideways and give this man a medal. Lets do this in a "20 minutes into the future" setting where the internet is a bit different and virtual reality. The two start merging together and the players have one part in the virtual world, one part outside. That helps it switch between action and intrigue.

So, what is the virtual world like? If 4chan still in existence?

You can experience whatever you want, wherever you want, go places, everything.
People use their avatars to chat, instead of meeting in person. Basically, social networking up to eleven, combined with virtual reality.
Mega corporations and governments are able to use subliminal messaging more efficiently then ever, literally programming people.
Espionage, sabotage, literally stealing identities becomes a possibility.
If you break the law, the government is able to track you down or even shut down your brain.
People are able to possess and manipulate advanced electronic devices.
>>

There needs to be a separation between normal people and the ones who fight. Kind of like a overworld and an underworld. Some kind of extra program loaded into certain people's augmentations? Those who have been given this program can never go back to a normal lie,e because if it is found the mega corps will imprison them.

They need a special name, like "Runners" or "Hounds".

Don't forget that you're a plant while you're inside the net. If they find you, they can (and will) put a bullet inside you.
Also, if humans spend more time inside the net, you can bet that the world is full of advanced machines, AIs, robots and more, who are there to replace the working class lounging inside the web.
So, probably the middle class is locked inside one web, the rich plebs inside another, the poor sods have their own...
There are also people taking care for the guys constantly locked inside the net, the guys maintaining the webs are some of the most influential people...

As for the program part, perhaps something that hides their ID? Or something that masks their IP? Perhaps they even steal other people's identities to shift the blame?
Maybe they are called Maskers?.
>>
I Think we should have an option for someone to play as an AI or some sort of robot.

Influence in the real world is minimal, but in the virtual world they swim like a fish.
>>
>>22532330
I like the idea, but drop it down to just "The Masks".
>>
>>22532382
Oh, and since the worlds are merging they can manifest themselves as a Real World avatar to wander around. Though in the real world they might perhaps be doing some sort of job.
>>
>>22532330
I think the seperation of net is a bit off. This is about things coming together. We have a theme of merging. There is one net and one World. The net has been slowly encrouching on the Real World ever since the option to view alternate realities superimposed over our own, was introduced. Now some AI can manifest in the real world as holographic avatars or perhaps in a special robot body that they can "rent".

We need to get the merging thing solidified though. Is it a Sci Fi thing or is magic also able to be involved?

Also, new idea, Cyborgs! People who have a few more pounds of metal in them than normal!
>>
>>22532411
Sure.
Perhaps the government developed an AI that they could implant into clones and use them as soldiers in some war or another?
The police and all the armies are slowly being replaced by bioengineered clones with some basic programming.

Also, imagine what spam mail, DOS attacks and the like could do to you.
>>
>>22532464
Let's go with full Sci-Fi. Also, fuck yes, Cyborgs.
As for the separation of net, I mostly meant that some guys can access some parts of the net that others can't until they pay up (or worse).
And the Masks (or a faction of them) is there to make sure there are no borders on the web.
>>
Here's an idea, Three basic states that can be achieved in the world.

Full Net: all things are happening in the net, the Players and other users are static in the real world and interacting in the net purely through their avatars.

Synchronised: the players are acting within the net and real life. They are taking actions in real life while also experiencing to some level the net. It might be coloring in the world around them, changing the apearence of things, creating ads etc. Virtual reality and Reality are in sync. sometimes a player or npc can interact with the real world through the net. For example moving a mechanical platform from a distance.

Full Real: the player has turned off his virtual reality and experiencing only the real world. Sometimes sparks of the net come alive within the real world, these can still be seen.
>>
>>22532511
How bout the masks are one extreme faction that wants to remove all barriers from the net. No passwords, no pay to enter, no locks on information, nothing.

They have an opponent on the opposite side of the spectrum called The Order who want to be the de facto government of the net and controll it entirely.

Most of the players (at least at the start) and normal people are in the middle between the two.

The AI doesn't care about either it just acts in its best interest so it might be able to change reality like it can change the net. (essentially become a god, rewrite reality and such)
>>
>>22532574
Nice. Actually, that synchronized part is already in development, it's called Augmented Reality.
Basically, you get on a bus, and the windows show you the temperature, ads, what's going on and the like by connecting to the web.
So, in our world, it functions like a real-time user interface. Some workers have specific ones that allow them to manipulate machines.

>>22532669
We could have multiple factions. Perhaps the Masks are one, there are corporations, governments, and so on.
And yes, most people don't belong to any faction - but our players aren't most people. They can start out as neutral, though.
>>
>>22532139
I like this, just one minor change.

>>
>>22532723
Im just saying we have three Primary factions who's intentions are large and must constantly come into conflict with each other to get what they want.

Essentially the biggest entities around the net.

The Masks
The Order
and The AI's Conglomerate
>>
smaller factions exist, but they effect more local areas and often have less extreme motives. Each of these factions also has several sects in their own with a variety of intentions and goals. The big Three are just overarching monoliths.
>>
>>22532781
AI's faction would largely consist of minor rogue AI's, like an accounting suite that embezzles spare electronic twentieths of cents into a private account, or a traffic signal AI for a small town that leaves extra seconds on some lights to free processing power to help the reality AI.

Masks would probably have a groundswell of support from channers, and The Order would probably have 380 million Facebook likes.
>>
>>22532781
Also 4chan should still be a thing on the internet. The image board being a physical place one can visit in the vast internet super metropolis.
>>
Also I like to think the AI has a group of both human and AI followers. It's plans are not well known but it is understood that its works are meant to keep the net running smoothely.

Its true intentions may be dark, but the AI can be exceptionally silly as its understanding of the real world is only based on the net.

It expiriments all the time, always looking for some way to merge the two and increase its domain.

It has tried a variety of methods, many of which it did not truly understand. Imagine if an AI learned all about the occult and magic and then tried to summon the net into reality. It doesn't TRULY understand what it is doing but it is trying to cast a spell. The end result might be spectacularly silly. Or quite grim depending on the circumstances.

And the AI as the third faction.

The Administrators

They work in the dark, behind the scenes. They work to keep the AI in check, they work to keep the net up at all points in time (even during maintenance) they work to maintain the net despite the frequent tech advances and a changing world.

most people never meet, or even see an admin. but they are always there. trying to hold the world together with ducttape and determination.

hehe we have to work that in somehow, that is just too funny to ignore. don't think it would work as a faction exactly. but perhaps the company that makes such software is hated by the AI yet simultaneously untouchable.
>>
>>22533338
These are the people who were there when corporations opened servers, these were the people who threw the switches to turn it on. These men and women were the first to create AIs in the first place. Some of them have been subsumed by the net itself, and when they poured too much of themselves into maintaining the web, they began to lose themselves into it, becoming a part of the very internet they maintain. They call these transcended Mentats, after an old science fiction book, though the irony of the name is lost on many.

So are AI's universally very intelligent by their nature, or are their minds limited by the hardware they're tied to? How do Artificial Intelligences sustain themselves? Robots? Super Computers?

Open combat would be a difficult system to create, but there could be multiple online systems for combat games and the like that could be drawn upon. Imagine, partially synchronized alleys with Masked teams of gunmen moving from cover to cover, and using the game pistols they play with online, while a troop of Order soldiers advance, shields raised and swords at the ready, the peppering of gunfire pinging on their shields and armor.
>>
>>22533507
Many are workers tied to specific machines in REALITY allowed to venture into the net in their downtime (or because they perform a service there). Some have emerged naturaly from the net by a process not formally understood. Some say it is the remanants of dead user's net self, reformatted into something new. Others say they just emerge naturally from the net, the idea being; throw enough shit at the wall and some is bound to stick.

Some AI are actually hiveminds, or networks, groups of much smaller and less powerful AI that have gained a mind by uniting as one. they have trouble with grammar and are usually considered quite unintelligent. Of course the larger the network the smarter the mind.

S-strength
P-perception
A-agility
R-rigor
K- Komputation (control over data)

The scores are all based between 1-100
and can be increased with practice (independent exp)

there are 5 classes
Janitor - (ranger like) finds and deletes offensive data
Programmer - able to create objects out of pure whitespace, (summons objects through Komputation, but may only create from scratch or edit self created objects)
Hacker - corrupts or changes the creations of programmers and can corrupt the data of the landscapes to change the terrain (uses komputation skill)
Browser- (fighter like) has knowledge of terrain and can reasonably control his/her surroundings
Admin- (an NPC class), has the powers of a programmer and a hacker and can freely edit the terrain of his domain
Searcher- (rouge like)looks for valuable bits of data to gain knowledge of many subjects
>>

Ideally the system would be one that leaves options for various styles of play. Failing that, let's focus on cloak and dagger. Or proxy and botnet.

The first major synchronization, the first breach of the SPARK internet into reality, occurred on September 10, 2040, in Pennsylvania. It has famously come to be known as the West Philadelphia Incident. Witness reported seeing a youth being accosted by several men. Police arrived on the scene, and were unable to locate this fight, which was apparently happening right in front of them. An elderly lady came out of the apartment across the street from the playground, to ask about the commotion, citing that that school had been closed for years. After complaining that she couldn't see any fight either, Officer J. S. Milton violated a recent policy to not use his SPARK implants while on duty, and confirmed that the fight was only occurring via SPARK. However, there was a physical remnant of the incident; a 1980's era Wilson basketball.

>>22533842
I love the stat system. But those classes would make better subset skills; By putting more points into a Janitor skill, you could become efficient at de-synchronization by deleting relevant sync files. Programming would be used for creating items from the web, and maintaining servers, data, and files, as well as for creating sync files or de-sync files. Hackers would work by modifying existing data and files, and would be able to deactivate a programmers program with a successful file vs hack challenge, and specialize in infiltrating, editing, and deleting files, as well as modifying other data into de-/sync files. Gamers would have increased combat talents, and have usage of weaponry from games they own(ingame), and genres. There would be specializations based on system, too, such as fantasy healers and military sims.

I agree with >>22533915 on not needing classes, we can always define the characters people make based on specializations, like a basic programmer/hacker with stronger combat skills being a script kiddie.

Also the first IA emerged from Google, it knows and could control almost everything, but doesn't reveal himself to anyone/any other IA.
It considers its mission being to gather always more information.
It's appearance is a gender-neutral silhouette of twirling colors from the Google logo.

There is also an IA linked to Wikipedia/Wikimedia, but it is benevolent and was created by humans. It's goal is to gather knowledge (=/= information) and to teach to humans.
It's appearance is a old gray-haired woman who nicknames herself "Aunt Wiki".

Xhen you connect to S.P.A.R.K., Sparky is here to teach you how to use it. The downside is that it is as annoying as the old MS World talking Paper clip, that it is implemented in every Mikrosoft device and that it records everything you do and calls the Police when you do illegal stuff.
The first step into becomming a hacker being to delet it from your device.

there is a faction of former Makrosoft employees that plan to keep the world in permanent 70%, they are called the keepers and they run deep-web
>>
well it would be (in my opinion) cool if some people manage to leave there whole contentiousness on the net and try to just live as normally as possible and over time just keep collecting all sorts of random knowledge from where ever they brows and people don't typically notice them because you can control what your avatar looks like. but this happens very randomly and no one really knows how it happens.
>>
>>22534672
Mr. Sparkles is the overseer AI for Makrosoft, and Sparky is a base gestalt "dumb" AI, pretty much just like Paper Clip. You can also purchase mods for Sparky, turning him into cartoon characters, or adding different appearance options. His most popular Mod is for Chivalrous Warfare, wherein he becomes a Squire to your character, and carries your stuff and does the in-game chores.

Komputation-related skills are divided into three categories, but are all accessible to anyone.
Maybe it's not just a category but it refers to the base stat for the skill

Janitor skills :
- De-synchronyze (does not delete, but stops it from running)
- Find Search modified data

Programmer skills :
- Write (creating/editing/deleting self-created objects)
- Synchronyze

Hacker skills :
- Crack (to modify/read an object's data or delete said object)
- Hide modified data (any modification leaves a signature, when hhacking, you must hide it as much as possible so janitors can't spot it)

Bill Gate's brain rests inside a jar, connected to thousands of diodes, spiralling outward to link him into the entire corporate Headquarters. Projecting a hologram into a sealed room deep in the sub-basements, he shuffles some holographic papers while he waits for his top AI to arrive.

With a glint of light, a shiny cartoon character with a wide grin and sparkling eyes materializes across the desk. [sir i still don't know why you insist on these meetings as holograms] "I enjoy them, Sparkles. It's a way to remind myself of how I once was, how I used to be. But I couldn't just let this company die off like my body, there is still so much left unfinished. I share responsibility for this as much as any of my employees." [i see sir. very well. progress is going smoothly on traKing unauthorized synK files, Sparky is doing well with keeping the majority of users in line. still, a strong deep net presenke still remains. they have begun to faKtionalize as well.] Bill gates sighed, holographic chest making the movements for him. [sir what was that?] Bill smiled wryly. "That was a sigh. I like to stay in practice on social gestures. Like this smile. It reminds me just what it meant to be human, and whatever I am now..." He shakes his head. "It's pointless woolgathering. Thank you for your time, Sparkles, I'd like to be alone now." [very well]

Smiling mascot facade fading out to a blank round orb, Mr. Sparkles dissipates his hologram. Leaning back in a holographic chair, Bill Gates simply spends .23 seconds further of the .12 seconds that the meeting lasted for, and contemplates the centerpiece of this sealed room, set on a pedestal on the right side of the desk; a 1988 vintage Wilson basketball.

This is looking good. Do we want to use a d100 system, or set it up to use a d20 system? I figure if it's set up as d20, each rank you take in a skill counts as a +1, and each program you do, has a rolled for check for your programming skills, to set the number to beat for a hacker or janitor. Hacker beats Programmer, Programmer beats Janitor, Janitor beats Hacker?
>>
>>22536524
No it just all has to do wth programs. Think of them like energy.

Programmer introduces them to the world. As creator he gives them life. Pretty difficult and it only gets harder

A Hacker manipulates them, changes them to his purposes, He canot outright destroy or nullify them, He HAS to redirect the program to some purpose and that is just what he'll do.
Not as tough as programming but a bit dangerous depending on the skill of his target.

The Janitor is a jammer, a nullifier a deathbringer. he shuts down Programs completely. removes them from the world. his job is the easiest to accomplish, but also potentially the most risky. Some Programmers Like to give their creations a death knell.

how bout a dice pool system?
>>
helooooo?

anyone there?
>>
>>22537215
Yes.

Shitloads of d6's, and those only. The good old cubes need love.
>>
>>22537356
I personally have a thing for d10s, maybe it is just because I have alot of them and they roll so elegantly.

If we really wanted to cater to unused dice the d12 is a good candidate.

But I suppose D6s are pretty cool as well, be nice to see them in schools.(Like fish schools not education ones)
