You are Lord William Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad and the Norther Valley, Sworn Lord to Jon Arryn, Knower of The Song of Iron, and about as subtle as a nuclear bomb. Known throughout the Seven Kingdoms as the slayer of the Targaryen children during The Sack of King’s Landing, and seen as a dangerous sort because of it. For two years, you brooded in your Castle like Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, while your populace saw you as a usurper and criminal, and Hill Tribes ravaged your lands. Two and a half months ago, you stood, up, cracked your neck, picked up your Warpick, and started whipping the everloving shit out of your problems.

You tore your loudest detractor’s tongue from his mouth and nailed it to a wall. You beat the head chief of the Hill tribes in single combat, and killed the only one lower chief that disagreed with your rule. You’ve amassed an army of hard-asses, and found out that it’s probably your Southern neighbor who was behind your life sucking for the last two years. And boy is he going to regret that.

Fresh after receiving an lesson in Aggressive Meditation from a Hill Chief, you’ve spent two months organizing your lands and vassals. You now have two sworn vassals: That head Hill Chief I mentioned earlier, and an Anointed Knight of the Seven. That will keep the nobles guessing. Speaking of guessing, you’ve been invited by your Northern neighbor to stay on his lands for a week before you both attend a fete at the Eyrie.

Here’s a link to Thread six, which has all the previous threads in the first post: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/23707839/

well hello Page, how you doing today?

Evening gents.

>>23723925
So is it time to visit Tollet or do we have anything else to do before we leave?
>>
>>23724105
Howdy Aksel.
>>
>>23724112
So you are preparing to head up to the home of the Tolletts. BUT, you remember, it is customary to present some sort of gift to the Lord of a House that you are visiting. What will you bring your neighbors to the North?

(Rolling your Cunning…) You know that the Lord Uthor Tollett is a Lord in his prime, or just past, around his forties to fifties. You recall that his House Words are “When All is Darkest”, and his sigil features Grey Mountains on a field of Black, almost a reversal of your arms, in fact. You also recall he cares little for the politics of the Vale, preferring to keep himself occupied with…hunting, if you’re not mistaken.
>>
>>23724112
Now I kinda wish I gave myself a name in the first thread but hello anyway
>>
>>23724083
I'm alright, gonna have to vanish for about 30-40 minutes in a tetch. (Building I work at has a St Patrick's day dinner thing.)
Went bowling with a friend.

>>23724129
That was meant to be attached to this...things got weird for a second there.
>>
>>23724129
Idea for a gift? Hmm... we have iron, he likes to hunt. Let's make him a fucking murderously awesome boar spear and give that to him.
>>
>>23724143

Hell, slap up a name now. It's never to late.
>>
>>23724162
second
>>
>>23724129
>it is customary to present some sort of gift to the Lord of a House that you are visiting.
>preferring to keep himself occupied with…hunting,

I say we make him a really good set of hunting gear.
>>
>>23724162
But could we give him a better one than he has already?
We've got both an artisan blacksmith and a blacksmith's guild so maybe?

I'd also like to ask our Maester and do some research into him in case we flubbed the cunning roll.
>>
>>23724175
>>23724162

You decide that a good hunting spear wouldn't go awry. You have your smiths make a fine spear, with his house sigil on the head.

That task accomplished, you head out.

Roll 1d100 for weather.
>>
Anyone care to give me a short summery of the plans we have and everything that's gone down?
>>
Rolled 68

>>23724209
>>
>>23724189

We have an artisan blacksmith, the guild, and some of the best Iron in the world. At the least we can but try and even if it's not better than the one he has, it's certainly the best option we could give him. Remember we think he's non political, and likes to hunt, even if it's not the best spear he ever has, it's at least unique.

>>
Rolled 28

>>23724209

I hope for... hmm... miserable wet and hateful in regards to the weather. That way we can show up like a vagabond seeking shelter from the storm. Even the weather hates us.
>>
>>23724217

The weather is brisk but comparatively mild. There's not a cloud to be seen in the sky, which doesn't mean that one won't come. These mountain climates are difficult to predict.

You ride out with...
Who are you bringing? Is it just you and your Bloodsmiths?
>>
>>23724211
Our goal is WEALTH, motivated by HATE towards Tywin Lannister and Robert Baratheon (the lords responsible for our sudden elevation in status but also our angry pick-axing of the adorable princess), I guess we want to fuck their shit up. Our virtue is COURAGE and our flaw is AVARICE.

We've layed down the law in our realm, nailing tongues to walls, hurling warpicks through chests (at a fair distance) and generally hatefucking everyone who got in our way. Oh and we've set ourselves up as the primary weapons manufacturer in the entire Seven Kingdoms with some of the best developed iron mines in the Vale

We haven't really made that much in longterm plans but our army just keeps growing and growing and we seem pretty okay with that. It might not be the largest but it is easily the most skilled army in Westeros and between that and our bannerhouses we can fuck shit up on a truly lordly scale.
>>
>>23724240
>Who are you bringing?

A few of our personal Bloodsmiths. I assume we've left Korbis in charge when we left.

And maybe Luuk or Tor along with us?
>>
>>23724298
Would it be seen as excessive to bring our cavalry as well? I figure knights no how to act as lordly retainers and we are riding through what most lords consider wildmen-filled mountains.
>>
>>23724313
Alrighty then. So, what's this about pick-axing a princess?
>>
Rolled 95

>>23724298

Korbis was left in charge, let's take Grell and a few of his people along with us as scouts and guides. Take an honor party of 5 bloodsmiths, including the newest elevated guy, just to show him the ropes. Let's take Luuk along, Tor should be busy with his lands. I'd also say we take some of the elite Cavalry with us. Say a total party of 20-25 including ourselves.
>>
>>23724172 ooh, I feel all grown up.

>>23724339
This is me btw
>>
>>23724339

I'd say that taking a full war party with us would be foolish. 20-25 men should be fine, more than that and we declare that we are wary and possibly hostile. 20-25 shows that we know restraint, can show strength, and can defend ourselves against useless bandits and unattached hill folk.

And really, riding into the other lords land with 100 cavalry may raise an eyebrow or two and give us some unneeded looks that we don't want to fucking be bothered with yet.
>>
>>23724356

Okay, I like his plan.

I vote we do what B.O.M. said here.
>>
>>23724384
I agree with this guy.
>>
BTW Page are we sworn to the Eyrie directly or through someone else?
>>
>>23724427

We're sworn to Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie and Protector of the Vale.
>>
>>23724380
Well I did that wrong.

>>23724356
I'd prefer to go for a total party of 40 just in case something goes wrong. Doesn't seem like but everyone does basically hate us as much as we hate them. And forty doesn't seem too over the top to me.
>>
Some thing i hate to admit....
We Cant House 12 Units!
We have what, one Castle, and a tower thats being built?
A castle holds up to 5, and a tower holds 1.
The hill tribes never built fortifications either.
We mainly have any force picketed in tents around our castle and the chief's main sites then, though that'd be a strain on resources on their own.

A good get would be to convert some of our present troops, Either Garrison, Guerrillas, or Support into Engineers (As you can change unit types by paing the difference in power cost, at which there is none), engineers can build field fortifications, trenches and wooden palisades mainly. I like to think they'd put together motte and bailies, we can have them do it to the site of the chef's locations which allows them to house, a unit. (And gives a +2 defence modifier in combat)
>>
>>23724384
Just pointing out that a full unit of cavalry is only 20 men anyway. Do you guys think that the difference between 25 and 40 is really enough to get us considered paranoid / a warmonger?

If so, then I'm sure 25 will be fine.
>>
>>23724446

I'm not sure that take a full 40 men may be over the top in expecting Lord Tollett to put them all up. Remember, we are his guests on this, and will be travelling with him to the fete. Which, if we bring 40 men, and he brings 40 men, it looks like a small army.

Hence my suggestion of 20-25.
>>
>>23724472
We can house 5 units in the castle and I assume plenty more in the fortified town. Normal troops can buiild fortifications as well although they only get +1 defense. Last thread I mentioned sending an elite infantry unit up to build fortifications around the mouth of the mines. Helps protect them from attack and may reduce any dissent or crime among the miners
>>
>>23724356
Also, nope.
Even with the painted dogs come to heel, EVERY lord in the vale rides in force when traveling the vale, Lord Aryen himself rides with a sizeable force.
The saying is, The hill tribes never attack a force larger then themselves. Sometimes, they can get quite large, thus, in force.
A good escort, trusted men, Good Archers, scouts, ect, most if not all mounted.
>>
>>23724474
>>23724517

Yep, you forget fortified town, and fortified mine complex. Also, two of our units are both set at 20 men, while the housing of 5 in the castle considers them units of 100. Our guerillas are spread through the country side doing shit Grell told them to do to interdict the hate from the south, the Elite Special is Luuks boys, who basically do their own thing in the hill tribe lands until we call them up.

And there is the town, and the other town that Tor is building.

We've got plenty of space.
>>
Alright, I'm back.
So sorry about that.

So, back to the tolletts!
>>
>>23724720
I cant take that lord very seriously though.
I only ever see Toilets.
>>
>>23724720
>So, back to the tolletts!

Goddammit, Page, I told you that eating Indian food was a bad idea!

/terrible "joke"
>>
>>23724356
You ride out in state, a motley band of cavalry, hill man, and guerillas traveling with you. The ride to Grey Glen, home of the Tolletts takes roughly 4 hours, up the Norther valley, through the Mountains of the Moon.

The Grey Glen is an interesting bit of terrain, a vale enclosed within the peaks of the Mountains. It boasts a large lake, some thick forests, and Grey Glen Hall, the seat of the Tolletts, and the small community that surrounds the Hall. The Hall itself is rambling and squat, while the town sprawls around it. It extends to the edge of the lake, where you can spy some small fishing jetties sticking out into the water.

You ride into the town, drawing a great many looks from passing villagers.
(cont)
>>
>>23724799

You approach Grey Glen Hall, and are halted by a gate guard. You announce yourself, and after a brief wait, are invited within.

There you meet the Tollett's steward, one Micha Smithson. A jovial man, he seems quite interested in your party, cooing in welcome to you, and inspecting Luuk quite intrigued. Finally, after a round of introductions, he speaks directly to you.
"My Lord Tollett is in his study. He'd love to meet you there. May I ask that at least the majority of your party stay here, and I'll lead them to where we prepared a luncheon for you all?"
>>
>>23724843
"I can go by myself, I doubt I'll be ambushed by bandits inside his study."
>>
>>23724843

Take a few of the Bloodsmiths and possibly Luuk to meet him.
>>
>>23724843

Of course, all that I ask is a simple guide to the study.
>>
>>23724843
>>23724888
I think we should just take Luuk and if we brought our bodyguard captain him as well.
>>
>>23724909
Also lets not forget of the Guest right we need not be afraid
>>
>>23724886
>>23724909

I'd say solo. It's our first meeting with him, let's at least put him at ease without surrounding ourselves during a private meeting with troops. Let's play this one with at least an attempt at being polite. Besides, let the rest get some grub, I'm pretty sure we can handle one guy if it comes to it.
>>
>>23724941
We've not yet eaten his bread and salt.
or is it bread and wine?
>>
>>23724990

It's bread and salt.
>>
>>23724843

Go solo.
>>
>>23724990
bread and wine but I am sure he will offer us some also we should watch and make sure he doesn't have a sword barred across his knees that is the sign of the denial of guests right.
>>
>>23724909
>>23724984
As far as I'm concerned, Egar is essentially just a limb of yours. Let's compromise and only take him.

Yourself and Egar proceed to the study, where you knock upon the door.

"Come on in!" The cry comes back.

You open the door to reveal a well-lit study/library. The walls are lined with books, and a stuffed bird or two. A desk stands at the far end, richly brown, while the majority of the wood is of a lighter hue. There are several lamps in the room providing a warm glow. At a table between your position and the desk, a man is fiddling with and intricate model of something. He looks up, "Ah, good afternoon, and rises.

Uthor Tollett stands at odds with his house garb. His clothing is a somber array of grey and black, while he himself seems enthusiastic to meet you. You do see a hint of fear and appraisal in his eyes as he looks at you, seeing for the first time his widely-discussed neighbor, but if he is off-put by your presence, he hides it well. He strides forward, and you notice a pronounced hitch in his step. His left leg must have taken some injury, for he limps on it across his study’s floor.

“My Lord Bordain, welcome, welcome to my home. So good to see you, did the ride weary you?” At your dismissal, he smiles. “Ah, but you are young yet. No doubt you can outride me by miles in a day! Welcome.” Having reached you, he extends his hands, clasping yours in a firm, two-handed shake. This close, you note that he smells of…sandalwood, and leather. No doubt a perfume, worn as a sign of his wealth. Though you don’t recall hearing that Tollett was a wealthy house…

(cont)
>>
>>23725027

Seriously guys, he invited us to stay for a week, then head to the fete with him. I doubt he will deny us guest right. More than likely he just wants to get to know his new neighbor.
>>
>>23724984
Agreed.

We can totally handle him is anything goes down.
>>
>>23725062
>No doubt a perfume, worn as a sign of his wealth. Though you don’t recall hearing that Tollett was a wealthy house…

I think he's trying to impress us, or possibly wants our dick.
>>
>>23725062

Happy to meet you My Lord Tollett. May I ask what that is that you were working on there on the table?
>>
>>23725062
You take a moment to look over the lord. Closer to fifty than forty, you judge. His once sable hair is swiftly silvering at the temples, and his mustache is all but grey already. His face is pocked, and flushed, but speaks more of long days in the sun, and heavy drinking than any illness. He is a smaller man, perhaps just below average, but dwarfed by your size. You suspect that he may be closer to you in weight, for his gut shows that if he has missed many meals, that time was not recent.

"I'm so pleased to have you come over my boy! I heard about that business in the Rebellion." His face sobers for a moment. "A monstrous thing to ask of a child. Tywin Lannister should be ashamed of himself. " He brightens back up.
"Still, apparently it didn't do you any lasting harm, eh? I hear you thrashed the hill tribes between your lands and mine, and made them vassals. Is that so?"
>>
>>23725062

Oh, newly gained wealth? With that there exists the possibility of our southern neighbours entering in an alliance with our northern neighbours, scary thought.
>>
>>23725126
"Yes and so far they are proving quite loyal and useful. If I may inquire what was that you were working on?"
>>
>>23725126
Indeed it is, in fact I believe your steward is feeding the son of their warchief right now.
>>
>>23725126

I pacified them and brought them to heel. Given time and effort, I think that men who have been treated poorly by their betters could easily become some of the most loyal retainers for someone who shows them honor and justice. And my Lord Tollett, it was no monstrous thing to ask of a child as the minute it was asked, I was no child. It was a command from my liege lord, which, I am certain, you are familiar with.

Enough about me and mine however Lord Tollett, allow me to present a gift unto you.
>>
>>23725126
"It was terrible too to burn the Lord Stark alive while he watched his eldest slowly choke to death. When the chance to slay the Dragon's spawn as he had to the wolf's pups, I took it."
>>
>>23725126
Evening everyone.
(Not a roll)
>>
>>23725125
>ohgodohgod.
>bad move.

His face lights up like you told him it was his nameday.
"This? Why come here my boy, look!" You cross with him to the table.
It's...an inn. An oddly designed little inn. The front is incredibly detailed, and even bears the inn's sign.
You look at it, something is familiar about...
There's a flash of flame, and smoke and yelling. You seen the sign swinging over a pile of the dead. Gold Cloaks, who had run out to stop you and Ser Gregor Clegane. The Mountain has hewn them apart like so much cordwood.

You snap back to reality, and control yourself enough so you don't shout. "I know that inn."

He looks up.

"Ah, yes, you've been, haven't you!" His eyes light with manic intensity. "Come, quickly, I want your advice on something!"

He bustles you through a side door in the study into-

King's Landing. The man has made a tiny model of the entirety of King's Landing. Streets, buildings, walls, all of it.
He proceeds to quiz you on locations about the city, where this store was compared to that one, shifting buildings according to your answer. It's challenging, but you help him the best you can. After around twenty minutes of this, you beg off, and he subsides to the same exuberance when he met you.

"Well, you've certainly helped me out there. I have to make do with what little news I can, so far out here in the Vale."

You are slightly exhausted by the intense grilling, and seek to turn the conversation back to safer topics, like war. And death.
>>
>>23725338

Oh god, i love this guy. If there existed trains he would be one of those guys.
>>
>>23725382

You decide to revisit his question about the Hill Tribes.
"I did pacify the Hill Tribes, my lord, and in fact the son of a great chief is currently dining at your table. Given time and effort, I think that men who have been treated poorly by their betters could easily become some of the most loyal retainers for someone who shows them honor and justice."

Tollett nods his head at this.

"Wise words from one so young. But one of them is here? Excellent, I would love to know how his people hunt the various beasts of the Vale."

So prompted, you take this moment to present Lord Tollett with your gift, a boar spear of Castle Forged Steel from the mines.

He practically prances with glee.

"Oh, this is wonderful! A fine gift, Lord Bordain. Before we go to the fete, I must give it a try. And you must come with me! We'll hunt a boar of the Mountains together, and-"

"Are you hoarding the guest to yourself again, father?"

You turn at the unexpected voice, and who you presume to be the lord's daughter stands in the doorway.

The aloof lady has almond-shaped blue eyes. Her fine, straight, midnight-black hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a dragon's scales. Her skin is pale. She has a strong chin, to her heart-shaped face. Her dress is black with Grey highlights, and flows around her.

"Ah, Alyssa! This is our neighbor, Lor-"
"Lord Bordain, a pleasure to meet you," she cuts her father off by finishing your name and curtseying. "Will you be staying with us long, Lord Bordain?"
>>
>>23725583

Direct and forceful. How interesting.
>>
>>23725583
"I am accompanying your father to our lord aryen's wedding. He graciously offered us to go together, safety on the road.
>>
>>23725583
...This is probably a bad idea.
Despite his youth, I kind of get the impression that Bordain is a much more chaste man than say, Karban was.
Maybe that's just because he seems pretty focused on iron and blood.
>>
>>23725622
Interesting indeed....

>>23725627
this
>>
>>23725634

I think he hasn't yet found a woman with a Iron Core like himself. Until he finds someone like that then he doesn't really care.
>>
>>23725583

My Lady Alyssa. It is a tremendous pleasure to meet you.

Bow, be noble like, try not to imagine if this is exactly what this madman had in mind.

>>23725627

Then that.
>>
>>23725634
Still she seems strong enough to put up with Bordain. I figure that he would be smitten with her if she does some thing out of the ordinary enough to catch his interest. Other wise I don't think Bordain would notice her.
>>
>>23725583

Ah, Lord Tollett I see the game you are trying to play now.
>>
>>23725696
I agree. How ever we just met her and she my have hidden depths.

Ultimately I think Bordain will go for the first girl he sees with real steel in her. The question is just where will we find such a girl.
>>
>>23725627

"Lady Alyssa. It is a tremendous pleasure to meet you." You bow to return her curtsey.
"I am accompanying your father to our Lord Arryn's fete, to celebrate the new peace and his new wedding. He graciously offered us to go together, safety on the road."

"Did he? How gracious indeed, father." You do not have to be a great reader of people to know that something passes between the two's meeting eyes. "And yet, I thought we weren't leaving for another week, father. Or have I confused the date?"

"No dear," Tollett answers. "I just figured it would be wise to meet our closest neighbor before we arrived at the fete. You know how those Eagle-brained courtiers are. 'Tell me, is it true that your neighbor drinks blood?' 'Is it true he dances naked with Hill People?' 'Is it true..."

At this point, potentially from the horror on his daughter's face and the looks she keeps shooting you, he remembers that the neighbor he's talking about is right next to him. He stops and goes pale.

Alyssa squeak high-pitchedly, and runs out of the room, slamming the door.
>>
>>23725830

I can only think that William will laugh, and laugh heartily.
>>
>>23725830
"It's saltier than you'd expect."
>>
>>23725830
"I've heard worse."
>>
>>23725830
Laugh heartily and then answer jokingly in the affirmative. "Dancing without clothing is rather liberating if I do say..."
>>
>>23725830
Laugh long and hard. Confirm or deny nothing.
>>
>>23725830

Thank you Lord Tollett. I was wondering when honesty would come out. I know that opinion of myself is likely low amongst the nobility, however I find that opinions are worth exactly what you spend to hear them.

Let me be frank, Neighbor, exactly what are your intentions with this week? Be as explicit as you like, because I have always believed that like iron, it is always best to be true and straight when speaking.
>>
>>23725873
"Yes, no, maybe."
>>
>>23725869
>>23725873
>>23725885
>>23725899
>>23725928

You first reaction is a hearty laugh. Tollett seems mollified by your reaction, until you pause from your laughter, and say to him, completely stone faced: "It's saltier than you expect." As he pales, you burst into another round of laughter, almost unable to state: "And...ha ha... Dancing without...clothes...hehe, is rather liberating. HAHA."

You calm yourself, and continue, your tone warm and rich with recent laughter. "Thank you, Lord Tollett. I was wondering if I'd ever get honesty from a noble's mouth. I know that opinion of me must be low, but I find opinions are worth exactly what you pay to hear them." Your voice cools to your normal speaking tone.
"Let me be frank, neighbor; what exactly are your intentions with this week? Be as explicit as you like, for I have always believed that, like iron, it is best to be straight and true when speaking."

Lord Tollett, somewhat still bemused by your laughter, stutters a bit. "W-well. Frank. Yes. That would be wise. Advisable." He pulls himself together.
"Frank. Then I shall be frank. I had planned to save this for a few days, but very well. My boy, you are a man grown now. And, as you may or may not have noticed from her brief appearance, my daughter is a woman grown. Her brother died as a child, and my wife passed from sickness. How old do I look, Bordain?"

"Forty-Seven?" You hazard.
"I am Fifty One in three moons turns. I will not marry again, nor will I bear an heir. Which makes my daughter the heir to Grey Glen.
Jon Arryn asked me to bring her to the fete. I am certain he will wish to talk to me about marrying her off to one of the lords of the Vale. Perhaps that scarred Baelish, or a Royce, or something."

He pauses here, lost in reverie for a moment.
"You have not had children, William. You've never looked at your child, and known you would do whatever you could to make their life better." He looks into your eyes.

Bordain strikers me as someone who had a harder life than Karban even before the rebellion. Not to say the Karban was soft, but he knew how to make his path easier by being charming and making deals with big rewards and easy smiles for both parts, ready consider darker options but always guarding his good reputation and charming demeanor. Bordain is a grim man by his life and choice, more willing to do dark deeds went needed or order and more martial by far than Karban.
>>
>>23726132
...Well.
It just became significantly less likely that he's been the one encouraging dissension.
>>
>>23726132

You are mad Tollett, you barely know me and with my deeds and reputation are you suggesting...
>>
>>23726144

Altough Karban had the luck of the gods. Jebus just thinking on the huge tracts of land (breasts included) that we would have most likely received. And we knocked the King.

>>23726132

This could be damned good. It seems like an easy way to secure our flank, secondly Tollett looks awesome and has been more direct to us than pretty much everyone EVER, thirdly finding a good wife is going to be hard, damned hard considering our reputation

Frankly i would go for it but, and that's a big but, we should first see how his daughter feels about us. Because William isn't going to accept a marriage of convenience considering his life, there must be the possibility of affection.
>>
>>23726132

"My daughter is a spirited girl, and confident in herself. But she has spent most of her life here, in the high mountains. She has not dealt with the courts of the Eyrie."

"I wanted to meet you, to see what you were made of. If you were the cruel monster some would have me believe, or the hand of order that that passing bard claimed you were. Because you are of an age with my daughter. That would make your marriage easier than some of the options. And while I know that you are richer than us, and would gain little beside my daughter's hand..." He musters himself for a moment, and you see in him a steel he has not shown you before. He meets your gaze without flinching. "I would not recommend you count my daughter's worth too little."

His fatherly duty done, he glances to the door where she left.

"Even lacking that, should you have no desire to marry her, if after a week you two have nothing in common and cannot stand each other...I would know you. I would have measure of my neighbor. And so would my daughter. So if in time the cruelty or age or whatever problem her true husband has gets too much, she would know that there was someone near by that she could talk to."

He brightens "And at the worst, I would get to see you two tear each other apart like cats in a bag, and have a hunting companion!"

"I do not expect you to love my daughter as instantly as I did. I ask only that you talk to her. Learn of her what you can, and share of yourself what you will. I would have her have every option of husband, so that she can make her choice. If you are a blood-drinking, nude-dancing murderer, well.." He smiles. "You're still a sight better than some of the men who've written me.

Tell me Lord Tollett. Are you asking me to pay court to your daughter? To seek her hand so that you may secure your own lands for her, and secure her future with a younger lord who is less likely to bear any ancient grudges towards you or your house? If you want me to pay court to your daughter, have you at least mentioned it to her, because I do know a little something about having decisions thrust upon me without my input. I've been manipulated far to often Lord, and I will not subject myself to it, or force it onto your daughter either.

Let me be honest with you Tollett. I'm a young man in a land not my own, with lordship thrust upon me due to a black deed that I also had thrust upon me. I aim to forge my own path, secure my own future, and I shall do whatever I must do to ensure that those who stand against me shall suffer terribly.

I'm not a man of delicate sensibilities, and if your daughter has issue with that it will likely go poorly.
>>
>>23726224
True.
In terms of marriage for profit, I'm pretty sure this is as good as it's likely ever going to get, unless shit gets straight up insane, which it won't for a couple decades unless we instigate things.
Also, I kind of feel affection might be a bit too strong. Maybe mutual respect?
>>
>>23726268
Belay that for now?
It seems like he's a smarter than you gave him credit for.
>>
>>23726258

I think we can do what he is asking, frankly its appealing in several different ways and Tollett has that Core of Steel that William would respect.

I say we can do what he asks, for he doesn't ask for much beyond seeing if the possibility exists.
>>
>>23726258

100% agreed there. The fact that it was mentioned that other nobles and courtiers think we are a butcher who drinks blood and such kind of points out that we will NEVER get a good marriage with a high born lord.

That said, a local lord, not rich in wealth, but with bordering lands we can add to our own, AND who would willingly attach their house to our own while knowing about us? That is worth it's weight in iron.

I'd go after it as hard as possible were it me. Even if we don't really like her, and she doesn't really like us, it does allow us to advance our own cause, set up a family proper and eventually get an heir, and most importantly, their extended family and allies would probably consider us part of that same network. Which may be helpful if we ever need lordly aid.
>>
>>23726224

Despite the good rolls (and we were very lucky at that) I don't see as lucky, he was more like talented and hardworking, always looking for to make improvements on his works and himself but not quite the perfectionist or an overly ambitious while still driving himself ever higher.
>>
>>23726258
"Lord Tollett, I can't tell you how honored I am that you would even consider me to be worthy of your daughter's hand, considering my reputation.
That being said, considering I don't think I made the best impression with your daughter, could you tell me anything about the lady Alyssa?
Or is part of the reason you invited me is so that I can find out on my own?"
>>
>>23726390

I agree with you except for one thing, he was fantastically ambitious, combine that with his luck and amazing ability to apply his skills and those of his friends and companions for various tasks including making money by the bucket load was enough for our Lord to sit up promises shitload of land because he knew we where fucking lethal if pressed, and better to have us backing up his son than against him.
>>
>>23726415
This doesn't seem like something our character would say honestly at least I don't think so.

>>23726323
agreed
>>
>>23726415

That doesn't sound anything like Lord Bordain
>>
>>23726415

Yeah, much as the sentiment is nice, it's not a sentiment that we would actually voice. It's really out of character.

>>23726464
Agreed.
>>
Personally, I see bordain as someone much more likely to go for a marriage with some he admires than someone who will bring him good lands. I imagine he'd want a girl with the same iron core he has, someone strong and who doesn't give a Damn about his reputation or what the loss of the eyrie think. Oh and someone we can trust.
I say we find out whether this girl rocks those boxes and them go for it.

That said. One of our motivations is wealth and our flaw is avarice ... Would it be more in character to carte more about wealth? And if so should we continue selling out wealthier brides? Could we even find a wealthier bride? Most brides come with contacts but we're not Dorne, a female heir is rare, a girl who comes with land and an army of her own might be just what we need to duck up the we hate.
>>
>>23726268
>>23726415

"My lord, I am honored that you would consider me, my reputation as it is.I will ask, however, have you at least mentioned it to her, for I know a thing or two about having decisions thrust upon me without my input. I've been manipulated far too often, Lord, and I will not subject myself to it, or force it upon your daughter either."

He nods his head. "Yes, I had mentioned that the time was coming when she would have to be wed to some Lord of the Eyrie or other. I did not specifically mention you, but I had hoped that you would turn out to be a troubled young man, rather than a gleeful murderer like The Mountain."

"You mistake The Mountain if you think him gleeful, my lord. In three years I never saw him smile. That aside, and given our recent impression, please, tell me of your daughter. Or," you interrupt yourself "is learning of her on my own part of the challenge?"

Tollett sighs. "What is any young girl to her father? She is clever, and strong-willed, like her mother before her. She enjoys riding, though not hunting. I think I have sickened her of that. She can play the harp, beautifully to my ear, but again, I hear with the ears of a father. I would call her cold, but I think it is loneliness. Some would call her rude, I would say forthright. She is my daughter."
>>
I am going to say this: Marry the woman as soon as possible if we can make the relationship agreeable or better. Try to be kind and honest to her and if we can make her happy even better.
>>
>>23726567
And I'm posting on my phone, excuse the typos
>>
>>23726572
Clever, strong willed and forthright sound promising
>>
>>23726572
...This girl sounds perfect for William. Let's hope we can get along with her.
>>
>>23726572

Troubled I may be, and young I certainly am, however your suggestion is intriguing. I'm not a large hunter myself, save of men, however I must admit that I do enjoy the hunt, both types in fact.

I'm a lord, but not a knight. A killer, warrior, and solider, but I'm not all that my reputation makes me seem to be. If she likes riding, then she may enjoy my lands, because unlike much of the vale, the hill folk do not trouble me or mine. And, this part being important, I value strength, both of will and of personality more than most. If she is blunt, it is a good thing. I cannot but try Lord Tollett, but given what you have told me, I would like to try.
>>
>>23726572

I say we agree to give courting her a shot, but we won't promise a marriage. Start up a conversation with her and see what happens.

The flaw we already have covered. Ditto the hate.

Shush you, making a joke to pass the time.
>>

>>23726690

You two hog all the great responses. Which is why I'm lucky you keep coming back.
"Troubled I may be, and young I cannot deny, however your suggestion is intriguing. I am not an avid hunter, save of men, however, I do enjoy the hunt, of either man or beast."

"I'm a lord, sir, but no knight. I am a Killer, a warrior, and a soldier, but I am not all that my reputation makes of me. If she if fond of riding, she may enjoy my lands, for the hill folk do not trouble me or mine. And I value strength, of will and personality more than most. If she is blunt, then this is a good thing. I can do naught but try, Lord Tollett, but given what you have said, I would like to try."

He seems relieved and overjoyed that you are interested.

"Excellent, my good man! Come, let us join your companions for luncheon, and we shall see what game is afoot, eh?"

If the face that follows is his "plotting" face, he would do well to remain honest the rest of his days, but you stride with him to luncheon.

You find your men feasting on tarts of caramelized red onion and black olives, thick herb-bread, topped with roasted tomatoes and sardines, and pheasant roasted in a sauce of sherry and mustard.

Luuk is clearly enjoying the benefits of an actual chef, instead of a communal cook like his tribe is used to, and Lord Tollett swiftly descends upon him to badger him with questions.

You notice that Alyssa is present, seated beside Grell at one of the tables. The silence of her companion seems to suit her, though her other side is open.

>Wat do?
>>
>>23726886

I suppose we shall have to seat ourselves besides her Alyssa, because as subtle as an atomic bomb!

Hm, perhaps we should ask her if her father is always so 'direct', and when the hell did he get into the hobby of building a city.

Also love to listened to the GoT music whilst in these quests.
>>
>>23726886
Well we might as well be direct and sit our ass next to her. Hopefully Grell is being a conversational delight.
>>
>>23726962
I'm sure Grell is practically lathering on the charm.
>>
>>23726886

You keep bringing us back, it's worth it.
>>
>>23726886

Sit next to Alyssa
>>
>>23726935

Hell yes. Let's engage her in small talk, see if her father has broached the subject to her, and see if she finds it interesting enough. In fact, see what she is interested in.
>>
>>23726886
I hope you don't mind if I intrude on the hearty conversation you're having with my man Grell, m'lady. Your father is certainly a refreshingly honest change of pace from most nobles I've known and I've been delighted to hear much the same of you from him.

Too smarmy for the Chief of Iron?
>>
>>23727040

Fitting. Roll with it.
>>
>>23727040

You drop yourself down next to the Lady Alyssa.
"Milady."
"Milord."
"That pheasant looks nice. Tell me, do you have a gravy boat of blood I could pour over it?" (PERSUASION: YES!)
Her cheeks spike red, and she laughs aloud.
"I'm sorry milord, only gravy."
"A pity."
She chuckles, and you pass the time talking about relatively little, until you feel enough time has passed to broach the subject.
"Milady, if I could talk about your father-"
"And how he wants you to marry me?"
She looks you dead in the eye, challenging you with it.
(Will: SUCCESS) If the girl thinks she can strong-arm WILLIAM BORDAIN with mere eye work, she is wrong. Your eyes don't even blink or turn from hers.
"Ah, so you've been made aware."
"I guessed. he's been talking of marriage a while now, and suddenly a bold young lord shows up- what?"
You are smiling.
"Bold am I? Milady, we've barely talked a hand of minutes."
"I've heard the bards' tales. Smiter of Hill tribes, nailer of tongues. You are bold as brass, my lord, and you expect the rest of the world to just stand back and let you take what you please!"
She's clearly upset. What do?
>>
>>23727420

"I expect the world to fight as it always has and always will no doubt, if my life until know has taught me anything is to struggle and fight for what i want. it has hardened as if steel" he pauses slightly "You need not fear, your father made it clear that if we have nothing in common or cannot stand each other then nothing will come of it.."
>>
>>23727420
"Well, of course. I did not see any who wished to lay claim to those regions do more than speak of it. "

"As for the rest, be assured that I do not presume to take what I please your father."
>>
>>23727531

>>23727531

"I expect the world to fight as it always has and no doubt always will, if my life until know has taught me anything is to struggle and fight for what i want. it has hardened me." he pauses slightly "You need not fear, your father made it clear that if we have nothing in common or cannot stand each other then nothing will come of it.. Even had he not there are some lines i will not cross."

Changed it a bit, seems better this way.
>>
>>23727420

No Milady, I expect the world to force me to beat it into submission. I expect the world to try it's best to stop me and anything I ever want, and to do it's best to set me up to fail.

And I expect it to lose. Badly.
>>
>>23727531
Good but don't say its get father who will not condone the marriage is we can't stand each other. Say we won't condonethemarriage of we don't get on
>>
>>23727649

We have different words, but the same mentality in this one.
>>
>>23727665

"I expect the world to fight as it always has and no doubt always will, if my life until know has taught me anything is to struggle and fight for what i want. it has hardened me." he pauses slightly "You need not fear, if we cant simply not get along then nothing will come of it. There are some lines few as they have become that i will not cross."

Better?

>>23727674

Aye.
>>
>>23727531

I expect the world to fight as it always has and will, no doubt. If my life has taught me anything it is to fight for what I want. Life has hardened me like steel."
You turn to her, and match her gaze.
"You need not fear. Your father made it clear that if we feel nothing for each other, then we will do nothing. Even had he not, given my past, why would you think I would force anyone into a decision they did not want to make?"

She quails a little at that.
"I am sorry, my lord, I did not think of it."
"It is not a thing most like to think of."
A pause follows.
In your head a plan forms. She is strong willed, and if there is one thing the strong willed like, it is a challenge.
"So, your father tells me you ride. Would you care to have a little race?"
She perks up, but eyes you cautiously.
"A race, milord? It would be improper..."
"I am William Bordain. Improper could be my house motto. Come now, let us see if you ride half as spirited as you rail.
(Incite check: SUCCESS)
"As I WHAT?! Very well, milord, and when you are left alone halfway through the race, perhaps then you will have some calm peace, in which to reflect on how to speak to a lady!"
She storms out of the hall, as more than half the eyes follow her from her outburst.
Grell looks up from his luncheon.
"Good move."

IT'S RACING TIME.

You quickly saddle your horse and ride up to the starting line. She is shortly behind you, having changed from a dress to more suitable riding pants.
Some of your retainers and some of the townspeople have gathered to watch.
"Shall we make a wager to make it interesting, my lord?"

>Wager?
>>
>>23727808

She has the fire in her, good very good. And apparently William is a fucking expert on how to handle the ladies.

I cant think of a wager but i am all for it, so lets see what she says.

Also, how much land do the Tollets have? What is their land known for? What goods do they produce?

Given that his daughter is the heir we'll be getting these tracts of land if we get hitched.

Thank you for tallying that, ReligionMan.
And I can say with pleasure that you beat her in every roll, one time with two degrees of success!

You now have her permission to court her.

Now, guys, I have to cop to something. I'm exhausted, and this quest is nowhere near where I hoped it would be. So, since I am not a cruel GM, I will continue it tomorrow, and probably Monday.

If you like, right now, we can take a short-cut. We cut the role-play for the rest of the romance, you roll persuasion 3 times like the race, and if we get enough, I write up how we wooed her at the start of tomorrow, so we can get to the Fete, and Lord Belmore.

Or, we can take time tomorrow, and do it the "clean" way.

Which do you prefer?
