You remember a wedding. Drink, food- pink lamb you believe. A fine feast. A feeling of peace, relaxation as worries melt away. You smile.

But you also bark, and snarl. You sense treachery. You know treachery. The alpha is displeased, wraps you in iron and remands you to a box of wood smelling of horse fear. Why won't he listen? You bare teeth.

The songs change tempo. You lower a goblet. The Rains of Castamere? Screams. For a moment, you freeze rigid, shock filling you. They wouldn't dare. A crossbow's twang.

Your ears catch screams. You whine. Shake, howl, strain against your bonds, but flesh and blood is no match to iron. Bad men. Men that stink of hostility and amusement come closer. They dare not come close. They bear weapons that send bites to a distance.

Smalljon throws the table up and over you, as you bleed, still unbelieving. You try to think, try to say something, as you see Smalljon go for his blade. Bolts fill him, he still runs. You wish for nothing more than for him to stop. He falls to one knee, sliding forward, pulling forward. He is on his knees when a man wearing the flayed banner cuts his head off. It takes two blows.

You feel the pain, the bite, and howl, as the lesser dogs bark back at you. Lesser creatures. Your blood runs free, but you can't get past the chains- they loosen. Someone has loosed you! Joy. Your teeth wrap around the necks of debased wolves, even as iron fills your coat.

Dacey, longaxe to the belly from Ryman, whoreson smiling at killing a warrior worth ten of him unarmed. Wendel, a bolt in his disbelieving mouth. Robin, fallen under a crowd of knives. Too many names. Another bolt in you.

Hate. Anger. Fury. They shout things at one another, shocked by your actions. A shake of your head, and the whining creature in your mouth silences and stills. You are slowing. You leap forward, grasp the arm of your two legged prey. He screams.

"The Lannisters send their regards."

Then cold knife and cold bolt slip in to your heart.
>>
Fuck yes, it's alive!
>>
You remember this. You remember the burning hate, the fear, the despair, those words whispered from men you trusted. They violated a sacred law that day. An old law. A law older than their families, their castles, their blood.

You remember Robb Stark's disbelief. His useless fury. But you are not Robb Stark.

You jerk awake. It is a weak day, in a forest. Leaves wisp in front of you, drifting on an eddy of the breeze. You are looking up to a grey sky framed by skeletal trees. You are surrounded by men. Not your men. Grubby, dirty men that wear no loyalty on their sleeves. They stare at you in fear and horror. One man holds a knife, pointing at your throat. Something must not have gone to plan.

"Di-Did it just open its eyes?"

You don't know what they were planning. But in their surprise you have an opportunity before you. Fight or flight. Your jaw spasms, imagining their warm blood running in your teeth. Or lead. Memories of a crown. Where is your crown?

Crown. Where is your crown?

You sit up, eyes wide and glancing around. The man with the knife to your throat cries out, jabs it forward, and with instinct your cold hand wraps around it and twists, grasping the metal and pulling it aside, tossing it to the other end of the clearing. It did not hurt. Your flesh does not bleed.

You stand, glancing around. No. No your crown is not here. A snarl rips from your mouth, your teeth bared. You are a KING. You growl, grasp at your throat, it refuses to come out, come out right, but eventually you manage to work it out.

"Crown?" You growl out to them. The shocked band were in a tumult, grabbing bows and swords, but freeze at your words. You sniff. Refuse. Old rabbit. Dying embers. River water. Blood. No gold. No crown. A thought crosses in your head, hurting it. Something about a crown, but you shake it free. Not right now. There are more immediate concerns.

"What, awful, stranger spawned evil is this?" One murmurs. The man who held the knife had been rising, backing away, but he stops at the noise that passes from your throat.

"Robb? Is that you?" This man is familiar. How?

>Input.

>>25876174
Kill the traitors.
>>
>>25876208
>>25876215
You stand now, on shaky legs from the rock you had been lain against. You are wet from the river. Cold. But a good cold. You walk to the center of the clearing, and the men in front of you back away, and the others surround you. Pack. They were a pack. Harwin alone stands in the ring, staring in horror. You sniff. Smell. Old smell. Snow, stone, oldwood smell.

Only nine men, some part of you notes. There are rules. You could kill all these men. Nothing to fear.

"Y-" Harwin flinches, shuts his eyes, but stays still, as you try to work out the noises, "Yurrrr," Frustration wells within. You look a fool. You tamp down the anger. "Familiar. Who?" It does not come out nearly that clearly. You point at him.

"Ha-Harwin my lord," He glances back to the crowd in fear. A bearded man gives a shrug, "You must remember me!" He claps his hand on his chest, hope in his eyes, "Robb! I served your father, when he went south! I heard about the wedding, and, I just couldn't let it end like that. I had hoped that Thoros would be able to bring you back, but-" He hesitates at this, and looks pleadingly, "Maybe we won't need him?"

Harwin. You remember, in the snow. Mother dead. Squirming in the cold, baying for warmth. Harwin didn't like you then. He left with your father, south. Father didn't come back. But he did. How dare he. Your cold fingers clench, and Harwin seems to sense this, steps back. Swallows audibly.

The crown. Remember the crown. You shake your head. No one can be king alone without servants.

Alright. Calling it for getting to the river.
>>
Harwin looks up at you.

"Robb?" You remember this name. But it doesn't seem right. Harwin holds up a hand, reaching for you, but you shove him to the side, stride past. Something was wrong. Something wasn't right. The crowd before you hesitate, rusty blades and bows up, but you hear Harwin call out from behind you, "Get out of his way!" Smart Harwin. The men glance between each other in worry, but step back and part as you walk forward. You smell water this way. You hear the rushing water. You've never had senses this sharp before. You would have to be blind not to hear the river from here.

You go through the underbrush, glancing left and right, seeing darting animals and birds flitting, all fleeing you. You remember their names, told to you in long, boring Maester's lessons, and you remember the taste of them as they died screaming between your jaws.

Thankfully, you now have a river in front of you. You scrape down the gravel and roots to the bank of the shore, and lean in your hands splashing water on your snout- snout?

You stare in the water. Pale, black tipped human hands are in the water, river flowing between the fingers. A shaggy wolf's head blinking amber at the water.

What manner of cruel joke is this?

"Robb! Robb, please, stay calm-"
"It's not Robb you daft simpleton!" The man is whispering, but he might as well be yelling to your ears, "This, this isn't right, it's a monster with Robb's body, and his dog's head!"
"I don't care damn it, he recognized me!"

They're arguing behind you. Maybe twenty yards away, in the thicket and woods.

You stare down, and grit your teeth. Hosts that slew their guests. Men that plied you with wine and song, and held smiles while concealing knives. The Twins. The Flayed Man. They killed Smalljon, Wendel, Dacey, Lucas, Robin, too many names, too many heroes that deserved a death in bed for their deeds, but suffered treachery to rob them even of a warrior's death- your hands clench, drag through the gravel and stones of the river as you shiver in fury.

Bent over, you arch your head back, and for once, you are thankful for this wolf's head. You howl to the grey sky above an oath. Frey? Bolton? No. You scream no name out of your ragged throat, but those that hear it instinctively have a dark premonition of what is to come.

You weren't sure what you were, but you remembered, you remembered those crimes. You would exact a bloody vengeance for them.

You pant for a moment- you are unsure actually, if you need to breath, but the exertion calls for air. For a moment, you are tempted to scream out all night, for those lost, in a vain attempt to call back their souls- but it's useless.

Words would not win justice.

You turn then, stand and stride up the slope, seeing Harwin, and a balding man with graying beard and a bow drawn. They both stare slack jawed. You raise a hand, try to muster words in your mouth.

The bow looses an arrow. It buries itself in your breast. It does not hurt. You hardly even need to stumble.

"Shit, Temmet, what fool notion-" Harwin turns, yelling at the gape mouthed fool next to him.

C'mon...
>>
You look down at the arrow. Long thing. You glance up to Temmet and Harwin. Harwin has his mouth open, yelling at Temmet, but Temmet. Temmet knows he had tripped a boundary that wasn't meant to be tripped. He is desperately afraid. A part of you wishes to kill him for daring to attack his rightful king, but another part of you is pleased that he is baring his throat.

It wouldn't be hard. You leap forward.

Harwin stumbles back as you clear twenty yards rough terrain in an eyeblink. Temmet is already crying, sinking to his knees, bow falling from nerveless fingers, "Please, please, I didn't know, I didn't know," is all you can pick out, before he starts blubbering wordlessly.

He flinches as you raise a hand, and Harwin wordlessly steps away from Temmet. You draw the arrow from your flesh- it's barbed, but you don't feel a thing as you pull it out, a dreadful noise of tearing flesh and cloth. You drop it at Temmet's feet, then turn to Harwin.

The wolf's head proves frustrating again, but you manage to force out, "Gather," You wave to the trees beyond, "Sword?" You add in. Strong or not, a blade is almost always better than a fist.

Harwin nods hesitantly, before turning, and giving a short, sharp whistle out to the trees, he looks back to you, looking immensely relieved. Temmet behind you in the mean time is curled up in terror.

"I knew you were Robb," He gives a sad smile, and then looks a little worried, "I, I didn't mean nothing with the knife earlier lord. We hadn't found your head, and I just couldn't bear to see you with...That on your shoulders-"
"Sword," You remind him. You really do not have time for this. Your crown. Freys. Bolton.
"Of- of course my liege!" Harwin unbuckles his own sword belt, passing it to you.

Men like ghosts pass through the trees, approaching cautiously as you pull the belt around yourself. You can already feel your flesh knitting together from the arrow's bite. A speech would be difficult. Keep it short.

Nine men gather under the cloudy skies, and hear a tenth figure speak. You look to Harwin.

"Not Robb. More," You growl as best as you can. Harwin blinks, "Winter coming," You point to Temmet. Mystified, Harwin grabs Temmet and brings him back in to the line of the rest of your audience. You glance across the men. You still smell fear, see unease, but they have their weapons now to their sides. They are worried about you. They should be. They had to have heard your howl.

"Vengeance," You start with. It's never far from your mind. The men glance at one another, the worry intensifying, "Freys. Boltons," You are surprised at how easy those words come from your mouth, "I will fight. Kill. Kill Boltons. Freys. Lannister," You struggle for a moment, to say more, trying to get your jaw in the right place to force out the words, "The RIGHT," By force you bring it out, "They broke, the RIGHT. Killed me. Killed under. Banner. Banner of peace," You wave angrily, memories coming back to you, "Broke North! Kill northmen," You narrow your eyes. The men are afraid. But something is coming through, "Punish. Fight WITH me," You clap a hand to your cold breast, and you can see shock. They don't understand. You wish they were wolves, "KILL with me. Bolton. Lannister. Frey. Bring justice," You don't feel physically exhausted, but there is a definite strain. You glance across the crowd. The men look at one another. You catch questions. How can this be? What would Beric think? Is he the stranger? You feel frustration, and roar:

"Kneel!"

That comes naturally. The men look in shock at you. Then Temmet kneels first. Then Harwin. Then the rest slowly join in, and bow their heads.

Poor start. But a start. Your pack. You raise a hand, and they rise. Unsure, but they will follow you Harwin looks to you then, glancing nervously, "A word, milord?"

Temmet is still kneeling. Sweating, despite the chill.

Psychic wolf-boy is annoying, but overall he isn't all that relevant, at least up until now so he's tolerable.
The real problem of the series is Daenerys because Grrr seems intent in having every single damn plotline converge with hers in the end in obvious ways and she's just not that strong as a character to carry all of that weight.

Kind of a problem I saw with the series as a whole. The author wants to convey things in a cinematic video game style, where he breaks away from characters we give a shit about and uses a placeholder character who we don't like as a camera for plot important stuff happening far away.

You would speak, but that last bout took something out of you. You wave to Harwin and join the rest of the nine walking back to camp. You hang back to speak with him, despite the clear unease this puts on the rest of the men ahead of you.

Temmet has been brought to his feet and is following along the band, stumbling, though he glances back on occasion with hollow eyes to you.

"My lord Robb," Harwin starts, then stops, frowns, remembering what you had told him then shakes his head and goes on, "I regret I had not told you earlier, but we're part of the Brotherhood without Banners, led by Beric Dondarrion-" You wave your hand in irritation. You needed to find Freys. Harwin stumbles over his words in a rush, "Who- who was sent by your father before he, he, ah, anyway, we're still fighting for the good fight, for the justice of the smallfolk. I had just heard about the terrible events at the Twins, and was given leave to go with a few men to try to collect what we could- oh my lord, it was terrible to see the state they left you in. We had seen what Thoros could do for Beric, so, we had a hope and took you- we could not recover your head though, and hoped to find that later-"

Beric keeps talking and talking. Still, the gist seems to be that he was hoping to return back to the main band of the Brotherhood. He seems to be under the impression that Beric would be pleased to see you.

You did not know much of anything about Beric. Or this Thoros character. But ostensibly, he was the alpha of these pups, the one they followed. It is possible you could bring Beric and the full force of his band to bear in your search for vengeance. Or he might take back his own men. You scratch the stitches at your neck, considering matters. You were strong, of that is certain. You were sure you could kill all of these men if they turned against you. But it might not be so easy against the rest. Some part of you rankles at this cold arithmetic.

Harwin is optimistic.

"Smurr," You growl, trying to force the words out, before settling for, "Not Stark? Betrayed?"
"Well," Harwin looks a mite conflicted, "No, no, it's just, the Riverlands were getting razed by Gregor and his band of bastards. We had to do something," Harwin looks apologetic, "We were no army. We still raided Lannister lines whenever we could, but we couldn't very well march North and pledge ourselves to you."

Hm. Likely story.

>Okay, I guess we can make this a binary choice here.

Let me put it this way, In Exalted, you typically play a dude who did something so awesome that the King of the Gods, Sol Incarnae himself, turned away from his monitor for two seconds to go "damn man, that was pretty cool, take this shard I'm gonna jam into your soul thats full of magic and kung fu and do more awesome things in my name. Now get going, cause I gotta get back to my raid."

And its pretty cool at first, till you find out that the Jedi betrayed you 1500 years ago and everyone hates you because you're supposedly a demon who possesses awesome people, and you're going to go slowly yet inevitably insane. Also a two thousand year old man eating monster just showed up and claims she's your wife, and really wants to go out on a date next week. And your best friend from your last life is trying to wipe out all life. And the autobots and decepticons have united and invaded in the south. And magical America is trying to shank you in the back, and they have magical robots and power armor and kung fu monks to do it with. And all the forces of hell are about to kool aid man right through the barrier separating them from Creation.

But its cool, because you're a fucking solar and fixing shit is what you do. (At least when you're not breaking reality so hard the Sidereals go 'we really need to kill this dude')

THE SCOURGE
A tabletop roleplaying game for two players.

Once upon a time, their was a fair and noble monarch. They ruled with kindness, justice, and honor.

But that soveriegn is dead; brought low by the betrayal of cowards and schemers. They celebrated in their halls; drank your wine, mocked your body, slew your family.

You are not a king anymore. Now, you are THE SCOURGE. Half man, half monster, you exist for a singular purpose, vengeance.

Reclaim what was yours; your home, your crown, your vengeance.

Let's make this happen, /tg/
>>
>>25882941
I see this game as being about the swing between terrifying monster and noble ruler.

Resolution works on a d6 success mechanic; fives and sixes are successes.

To start, the player has six dice; three "brutality" dice and three "nobility" dice. Whenever a player takes an action that is inherently brutal, like fighting or using their monstrous abilities, they roll the 'brutality dice'. Everytime the player does something inherently noble, like negotiating or ruling, they roll the 'nobility' dice.

Each die is tied to some piece of the character's past; their loved ones, their titles, their belongings, etc. Whenever a character can 'use' the background for an opposing die in a given situation, they can 'flip' that die's color and add it to the other dice. For example:

Robb is fighting a Frey bannerman. He rolls three brutality dice, currently representing his sword, his betrayal, and his wolf-form. He gets no successes, so he decides to use one of his nobility dice to tip the odds. He thinks on his "Mother", currently one of his nobility dice, and flips it to a brutality die. He rolls the extra die, succeeds, and with the image of his mother's ghastly murder seared into his mind, he strikes down his foe. From now on, his "Mother" background is tied to a brutality die, so that he has four brutality dice and only two nobility dice. Of course, the next time he has to negotiate, he might choose to flip his mother's die back to nobility, remembering her talent for diplomacy.

Thoughts?

Interesting concept. I would say that there would have to be a limit to how many dice you can flip, and perhaps a cost to it as well. Perhaps, each time you swap them you give a chance for an NPC (through the GM- or make it an ability if we're keeping things more board game-y rather than RPG-y) to swap your dice back. Example, the King in the North is about to land a killing blow on Walder Frey, he has four dice from swapping his mother to fuel his rage. He gets three successes, enough to kill Walder- but he had swapped it earlier, and Walder mocks the King, asking him to imagine what his mother might think of him now. The third success is soured, being based off of the Mother background, and Walder escapes.

Or, vice versa, The King in the North is in an intense negotiation with Bolton, doing his absolute best to not flip his shit. He rolls his courtly dice, and gets the one success necessary, but then Bolton gives a smug smirk, and asks the King whether or not his mother would have Tully or Stark arrangements for her funeral. The King flips his shit, and the negotiation is ruined.

Make it only that certain NPCs can do this, and only to recently flipped dice. Or something. I'm awful at mechanics. I like the idea though. I'd almost advise making it more of a board game kind of thing rather than a tabletop RPG. Maybe make it so that there's one King, and the rest of the players play ministers to his court, each with their own goal to swing the king in to either brutality or nobility? Eh, whatever.

Anyway, I'm back. Writing up the next post now.
>>
And I'm here, expecting.

This is great stuff man. We could probably incorporate that dice mechanic into this game.

You step through the forests, keeping to the old paths and avoiding the main roads. Harwin had given you an old cloak, and despite the irritation, you had draped it over yourself, but you have no delusions. Only a blind man could not notice something terribly wrong about a wolf's snout poking from a hood.

The nine men are careful, quick, and quiet, and for this you have to admire them as they dart through the trees. A good pack of hunters. You are strong, and you do not falter as you follow them, but you are frustrated with your body's inexpert design, and the sheer height with which you stand. You try to duck low, to use the arms instead of idly swinging them about, but you are at war with yourself through it. Your hands are too soft, your body not shaped to support it, and some part of you is disgusted at the thought of capering about like a beast. So you instead settle for your clumsy stumbling forward, leaned forward, predatory.

A hand is raised up front. You all halt. You're on a ridge, looking down at the road. One of the men complains, whispering, "We'll have to go back, group of men coming in a convoy, something like twenty."
"At this rate, we'll be fumbling through the dark to get to Beric."
"Either that, or we get spotted by twenty odd bannermen marching south to Riverrun."
"Are they Frey?" Harwin whispers urgently.

Silence.

"C'mon, keep no secrets."
"Yes...Yes they're Frey. But there's only nine of us! It would be suicide!"
"Ten. And Robb never lost a battle."
"Harwin, have you gone insane?" The man up front turns back, irritated, before spotting you. He ducks his head, and murmurs, "No offense. But, we're not ready for a pitched fight without Beric and the rest. Certainly not in Frey lands."
"They can't all be soldiers."

Frey. Oh, but this was a good opportunity. Rare was a crown won without blood. And you were hungry.

A king leads his men into battle. Our body knits itself together, our strength is beyond a normal man's and we have a sword on our belt.

We give them one growl, to move, to charge. We then do so ourselves, and kill them all. Slaying the second-to-last man with a bite. Let's see if our affliction is contagious... If it comes back, we're raised by the Great Other.

"It doesn't matter if they're all soldiers Harwin, it's a matter of simple ma-"

You laugh. Well, not really. It's not exactly a laugh. But something comes out of your throat, low, and anticipatory.

You stand tall now, and howl up to the sky. The men stare at you aghast, as you stop howling, and run down the road, further down the road, approaching the caravan, picking up another howl. Where are they? Where are the Frey?

You smell them first, they smell of salted fish, wheel grease, rations, a supply convoy. No noble man here, but the Frey's pack. You catch sight of them trying to glance back trying to catch sight of the wolves. Your body, inadequate as it was, is more than enough to stick to the shadows and thickest brush, keeping out of their eyes. Soft soldiers, guarding two wagons overburdened with supplies. You see sixteen with steel and armor, hanging loose and comfortable. They weren't expecting trouble, this close to their home.

You dash past them, pick up the howl again. They stop the wagons now, start circling about, starting to talk curiously. They think it's only wolves. They are fools. Spears, bows, and swords are held near, but not ready.

You can come out now. You can see the others. Harwin is telling them to wait. He knows to wait until their attention is turned. He believes in you. Good man. Quick to recognize a miracle. He catches sight of you- the Frey are looking the wrong way from both of you. He waits for a signal. Arrows are nocked.

I do want to make that clear that, spoiler alert, if you guys had said you wanted to kill the first nine men you met, I would have given it to you and just written up some gory painful details.

>When he meets up skilled soldiers, armies, certain entities or artifacts though, things are different. But against your bog standard humans that aren't very well equipped or have a very good plan? Poor humans.

>I'd want to hash out the mechanics a bit more before using them, but I'd be down to test it if you feel like Scourge devving.

Shift Nobility Dice to Brutality.
We remember war, we remember our training in the hold of Winterfell.

Take out the archers and slip our steel claw around those polearms to disarm them with the bite of our blade.

Maintaining for biting the second to last while we put terror into the very last.
>>
>>25884777
Rush forward, sword drawn, fangs bared.

Sink our fangs into the back of an unsuspecting Frey and our sword into the skull of another.
>>
Archers. Far biters. Your lips curl back. That was how they killed you. Both of you. Or was it neither? You creep back the other way down the road, waiting to get as close to the caravan as possible, crouched low, arms spread. You want nothing more than to bite and tear their throats open, but some part of you reasons, and you draw Harwin's blade. You signal to Harwin to wait.

You are close now. A few outriders are turning about in confusion, their horses panicking at your scent. Smart horses. Only four men near bows. They mill about in confusion, wondering where the howls came. Eventually, a large man with a scar over his eye puts his helmet back on, and inhales to shout an order.

You leap from the brush, and sprint for the wagons.

You are fast, so fast, and you rejoice to fill the wind on your face, and to feel your muscles stretched and tested. So much better than being dead. You feel the cloak fall from your head, and hear screams and shock ahead of you, and yet again you try to laugh with a head never built for it.

The archers are up on the wagons, scrambling for their bows. A spear blocks your path, held in shaking hands- he swings at you, slow, too slow, you grab the spear just under the point and pull him off balance and give a back swing to his throat. He falls bleeding in the dirt, as the slow men try to react, and horses panic. Men back away, giving you a clear shot to the top of the wagon, where a man takes an inaccurate shot at you. You leap up, steel fang ahead of you and land, tearing him from shoulder to thigh. The chipped blade breaks off in him. You don't know your own strength. You lash out with your left arm for the begging archer, breaking his jaw and sending him falling off the carriage, screaming. You would love to get to know it. The horses on this wagon are filled with fear, riding past the second wagon, and their two archers, the driver still foolishly trying to hold the archers in place. A single bound places you next to them.
>>
>>25885360
the Freys will be trying to get into a defensive formation. It will most likely be circular. Go for the centre of the circle, the leader will likely be there. With no one to issue commands, the convoy will be defenseless for your party.
>>
Harwin shouts something behind you. You can hear it, but somehow don't really care much at the moment. The man on the left buries a blade in to your belly. The man on the right leaps from the carriage, shouting something about a monster. You grab the left man's arm and squeeze until you feel bone crack, and warm blood running through your fingers. Your right hand throws the broken blade through the running man's shoulder, sending him sprawling in to the dust, gasping in fear. The driver in front of you has realized the gravity of the situation, and is running and screaming now. You pull the horses free of the wagon, to keep from being dragged off in to the distance. They obligingly run.

Well placed arrows are singing around you now, finding their marks in Frey soldiers. The Frey find you more important now.

Nine remain, eight with arms and armor, and one particularly brave servant, holding a dirk ahead of him. They are on the verge of running. Their scar faced commander at the lead, shield up to block arrows, pointing at you with his blade. Shouting about you being a lucky lunatic, that was all.

A few of the Frey are already running. The scarred man seems to be the only thing keeping the last together. You hear your men behind you coming running, calling out, with a few arrows as support.

You fervently hope to feel Frey flesh in your teeth before this is over.

Sure. Convert a nibility dice at that with memories of our father and his own skill with a sword. We also need to take a new blade from a man.
>>
>>25885516
((I'm not really sure how to use the dice system collectively, as we should decide these things together. Also, it seems like we would just always minmax our dice accordingly, so I'm not sure about the distinction in changing the dice there.))
>>
>>25885584
We'd be forced to add additional dialogue or thought to the monster, increasing the character to properly sway the dice.

Though, agreed, we'd need a better method.
>>
You drop off the wagon, and approach the ragged line. You hold up a hand. Harwin bellows a halt, and you cross the line to approach the Frey men, who seem a great deal less certain. And injured Frey man is between you and your targets, holding their line uncertainly. He crawls forward, bleeding from an arrow placed well in the throat. You stomp on him, breaking both arrow and neck, then reach down and grab his sword.

One of your opposite number vomits. Not the scarred man. He reaches under his coat, and you hear him whisper a prayer to the Warrior. Divine intervention does not occur.

You approach, steel claw in your right hand. This would be foolish, under normal circumstances. But if there's one thing you are sure of, it is that you are far from normal.

The scarred man glares at his compatriots, then shouts, "Well? What are you waiting for? Get him!"

The mob of cowards rush forward, trying to scream to cover their fear.

>Okay. Let's adopt the Brutality/Nobility dice mechanics. Once per action you can flip a die, however the action has to be thematic. Eating the heart of an enemy could flip a noble die to brutal, for instance. Holding a funeral for a friend in contrast could flip a brutal die to noble. But, a noble die turned to brutal, or vice versa has its flaws, as certain enemies can prey on that to sour successes earned with those dice. That sound okay? In this case, our King has 8d6 dice pool total. I'll work out the specific foundation of these eight dice later as it'd be tl;dr and I'd like your help, but currently he has a split of 5 brutal (1 flipped) to 3 noble. When at war, intimidating, or being generally awful, he has 5 dice. If he's trying to be intellectual, social or presentable, that's 3. I'll try to be sparing with tests. 4 and above count as successes, but this can be altered by characters, either positively or negatively. This is very experimental later

>So, let's try this. 5 anons, roll a d6. Let's see how brutally our King murders.
>>
>>25885832
>Oh, and if there aren't 5 anons, well, don't be afraid to just roll more d6s. And also, don't be afraid to criticize. I thrive on it.

You see them coming. Only taking courage from one another's presence, not coming like a pack, seeking to coordinate taking down prey, but only hoping that the other died first to grant an opening to exploit. Pathetic.

Harwin shouts something behind you. You ignore him. Eight men? Not even worth the blade. You shove the blade in to the grass at the side of the trail. Save that for the scarred man.

The first man comes at you, bristly beard and poorly made chainmail, spear first. You take the spear in the gut without emotion. He quivers, opens his mouth to say something, before you strike him hard enough to leave a scrap of jaw hanging by a thread. You walk past, leaving him to thrash and bleed in the dust in the dust. You tip your head, paying due respect for his courage. You push the spear out of your gut, leaving it to clatter by him.

Second and third. Not friends by their stance, but willing to work together. Another spear, and a sword. The spear man jabs, trying to keep you back, and the swords man goes for an over head chop. You snap the spear off at the head, push it in to the swordsman's throat. Leaving him to spray, you step after the spear man, dropping the useless haft, and wrap a hand around his neck. He claws at your skin as you get a better grip. A pull, and he stills.

Fourth is a man that does not approach who only got a few steps before witnessing what you had done, a red feather hanging from his helmet. He holds the sword ahead of him, trying to ward you off, and raises a hand, saying something. You throw the broken spear in to his heart. Unlike you, he falls back, quite dead.

Fifth, sixth, seventh. Actual men of war. They circle, broad blades out. They had seen what happened, were circling the short time you had dispatched their comrades. As soon as one sees your throw, he gives a shout, and the three charge in. Fifth swings low, aiming for your arm- the blade cuts in heavy, digging itself part way through your arm. Clever. Your arm is caught.
>>
The sixth man swings for the back of your legs, seeking to hamstring you. But you are quicker, and all he catches is air. The seventh though, the seventh was too bold. No helmet. Young looking. Robb's age, even. He stabs forward, goes straight for the throat. One of your stitches tears. It is agony. You can't stop yourself from crying out in pain. He gives a smug look as you swing at him, dancing out of reach. Your left arm, the cut arm, the man tries to twist it in the wound.

You wrench it back, and you hear the blade snap. He doesn't get much of a chance to gasp in horror before the back of your hand catches him in the throat, collapsing his trachea. The man behind you, you turn and roar, he was slow on the recovery, and you lash out with your right arm, slamming him hard enough into the dirt to bounce. You give his head a kick, causing it to twist unnaturally, and sending a ragdoll rolling across the road.

The seventh regrets his rashness. He holds up his blade, goes for your throat again, but you're ready, sidestep, and grasp his head. drive your thumbs in to his eyes. He doesn't scream nearly long enough for your taste. You hold back, prevent yourself (Why? Some part asks) from indulging. You get sick and hungry at the thought of it. You turn to the eighth.

The servant, tears in his eyes squeezed shut, is putting the blade to his throat. You will not be denied. You bat it aside. He cries out, but you grab him by shoulder and head, pull him back, and tear out his throat. Warm blood, warm flesh floods in to your mouth. You feel like you could vomit. You feel so joyful, wonderful, happy. It doesn't go down right, but you tear it aside in an arch. You let the eighth fall at your feet.

Scarred man is there. Kneeling on the ground. He has soiled himself. Pathetic. You walk back, pick up the sword.

"Please..." He whispers as you approach, blade in hand, "Please no. Whatever you want. Whatever you want."

Harwin calls Robb's name behind you.

You approach. Blade in hand. Harwin calls out again, but you wave him away in irritation.

Scarred man stays perfectly still, brown eyes wet and afraid, pleas whispered from cracked lips.

You reach a hand for him, and he shivers in fear. You pull the helmet from his head, and he squeezes his eyes shut, but stays still otherwise. He's beyond tears.

"Frrreys," You growl. It's hard to focus. Especially with the blood high on you. But for vengeance, you will focus, "Wherrrre?"

"T-Twins m'lord," He whispers, eyes still shut, "Twins, and Riverrun, helping the siege there. Took Seagard too, they're delivering the Patrek whelp," He shakes his head, "I'm not a Frey, I'm just a-"
You bring up your blade to his throat. He stops speaking, and quivers.

You consider matters. You know where Roose is. You plan to tear down that Dreadfort of his around his ears. The Twins were too strong, too well guarded. 'The Patrek whelp,' Patrek Mallister. If he had heard it, it was probably too late to intercept and rescue him. At least he lived. For a moment, a vision of sending this fool after his men whispers through your head, but no. Not yet.

Then, a thought occurs to you.

"Crown," You turn back to the scarred man, who looks perplexed.
"Crown? I, I haven-" You push the blade closer, and he leans away, "I don't know what you're damn well talking about!"
You lean close, smelling the fear off of him.

"Winter. Crown."

His eyes open. His pupils contract. Now. Now he knows.

"Oh piss," he whispers. He looks in your eyes, helpless, "I weren't there, you know. I weren't there, I was, I was," You grab the back of his head, and draw him closer to the sword, reminding him of his mortality, "Ryman! Fucking Ryman fucking Frey has it! I never touched it! I never fucking touched it!"
"Rrryman! WHERE?"
"Riverrun! He's laying siege to Riverrun! Please don't fucking eat me, that's all I know, honest!"
>>
Ryman. A fool. Upjumped dandy. You recall the smile on his face when he got Dacey in her belly with his longaxe. He looked so proud. That twisted little cyst of a man. He would make a suitable beginning.

You hear noise behind you. A glance back. Harwin is there, Harwin and the others, looking distinctly green around the gills. Harwin looks concerned.

"Robb, did you just-"
"Harwin," You growl, focus on him, make yourself enunciate the hard words, "Thread. Needle. Bandage."

Harwin looks puzzled, "What for? Are you hurt my lord?"
"Not me," You turn to the scarred man below you, let go of his head, and grasp his arm, "Him."

He screams, flails, as your teeth meet at his wrist.

The King in the North. That's all Harwin tells the scarred man as he tends to where his hand used to be. You resist the urge to eat the hand- it lays red on the road. Everyone is giving you a wide berth. They have an awe, and a fear on their faces. They have seen a god of war today.

You stand away from them, looking at the servant boy whose throat you tore out. No movement. But he had such shining blue eyes. You don't know if he had those before.

"Robb," Harwin approaches you. Brave of him. You look past him, see the scarred man stumbling down the road, cradling close his bandaged arm. Harwin looks down at the boy, in revulsion, then back at you. "I suppose I shouldn't be entirely shocked. If you have the jaws, why not use them," He gives a grim smile. Your gaze does not waver from the blue eyes, "But, it sure was...Unsettling? Robb, you, you-" Harwin searches for words, then stops. He glances at the boy.

"You scare me, Robb."

You are the King in the North. You will be heard. Do you follow Ryman? Or go with the men to see Beric? or something else entirely?

Well hey, if you're still along for the ride, I'm down. Sorry for writing slow.

'tis no problem at all QM

>>25887463
We should go meet up with Beric first. Get a better survey of the field, we can head out to Ryman and get our revenge after we've properly set ourselves up.
>>
>>25887487

No. It's fucking great.
>>
>>25887511
This.

We know we have a weakness now. We may be awesome and all, but if we charge blindly someone might get a crit on us.

We should probably strengthen the pack before we hunt
>>

Awww shit... We infect people with white-walker syndrome... Seems either indeed we have been raised by the great other... Or the Old Gods work in mysterious ways..

If it were fully the Great Other, we wouldn't feel pain from even the stitches.. and we also wouldn't be healing... though that's meta-knowledge..

Going with this.
And growl at the body. I don't want to turn my back on it yet.
If we can command it...

Rolled 1, 3, 2 = 6

"Beric," You growl, turning to Harwin. Harwin has a strangely hard look on his face. Fury rises up in you, an anger that lays down roots. He dares to doubt you? He dares to question you, when you have seen what you have seen? When you have felt what you have felt-

No. No, you push it aside. This was not how things worked. You glance to the boy. Still. No movement. The eyes though, the eyes fill you with disquiet.

You growl at the body.
>>
>>25887684

If we push the other guys hard, we might be able to make Beric and then relieve the siege at Riverrun.

>Nobility crit fail.
The eyes! The damnable eyes!

There is something there, something wrong! The cold, the fire! The wood. The eyes! Those cursed eyes, black hand, black foot, black smile!

A crooked puppet, no string, no more purpose, not even the bone. Against the spasming shadow, against the crying wall, under crow wing, over cracked ground, the eyes! They will watch, they shall watch, they watch! Let it not see, let it not know, you will keep it, keep these lands!

Your hands drag through dirt, muddy from blood, before Harwin's cries break through. You jerk back.

No more blue eyes. Nothing blue at all in that red muck. Your arms are red, up to the elbow.

You have smashed the servant's head in to a fine paste.

Harwin, and the others of your band are staring at you in disbelief. You blink, stand. You hope you did not eat any human again.

Silence holds between you all again.

"Beric. North?" You feel a deep and abiding need to not be here.

Harwin nods.

"North," You force out.

You lead the way. You know no one would trust you behind them as things are now.

>Travel time fun. Lemme take a look at the map. Actually, come to think of it, I should dig up my old copy of the Game of Thrones RPG.

Maybe send word to bury the kid? It wouldn't really suit with what we've became, but might move Beric to follow us. Are we cunning enough?
>>
>>25887844
>Well, I hadn't added in the rule that crit fails on brutality/nobility would swap a die, but I suppose that might thematically fit.

>Let's say that rule can come in to effect, but not right now. The King in the North is still 5 brutal, 3 noble at the moment. Actually, while I'm writing the next section, anyone want to think of things relevant to the King in the North for him to get dice from? Eight events/traits/inspirations/whatever, four inherently noble, four inherently brutish, would help. Draw it from Robb Stark, or from Grey Wind.

>>25887889
>Not a bad idea. The King in the North could try to swap a brutality die back to a nobility die with that. Don't know if it'll require a roll per se. Something to think about for more mechanics. Anyway, back to writing. When next I update, the meeting with Beric.
>>
>>25887915
Actually, on further review, I just misread the dice mechanics posted earlier. The way the last outcome was written made it seem like the nobility dice that crit-failed caused us to go a little smash-happy on the kid's head, thereby flipping to brutal.
My mistake.

It is not long, but the sun has nearly set by the time you catch the scent of strangers on the wind. No more conversation had occurred on the way. They were afraid of you. Not an entirely unpleasant thing, but you had to hope that their testimony would not sour the opinions of the others. You had proved yourself strong- on what grounds could they complain of you?

They were hidden among a collection of stones at the base of a rocky hill, not far from the river, and well isolated. Harwin takes the lead at this point. "Have to warn them," he mutters, with a wave at your appearance. You can't argue, "Just, just wait for my call, okay Robb?"

You don't really have a chance to object as he darts further in the rocks. All of them do, though last comes Temmet. He casts a crazed smile on you, and bobs his head, before following the others further in to the rocks.

The sun sets, and you can smell fires starting. Eventually, you hear Harwin's voice call out, "Robb! Come on out!"

You walk forward. It's a large band that greets you, and judging from the other campfires further off, not the end of them. But still, you bite back disappointment. Not an army. Not nearly large enough to break the siege on Riverrun.

Cast in the flickering yellow fire, you see Harwin, and two other men. A tall man, grey haired, with faded robe and piece meal armor. He does not conceal his horror at the sight of you. The other man though, he once would have been handsome perhaps, but scars cover him, and he is a gaunt scare crow, only one eye looks you over, the other a vacant hole. His brow knits together at the sight of you. But there is a strange look of compassion in his eye.

He looks over at Harwin, a hard look.
"I am sure, sir. He has recognized me."
The patchwork man frowns, and looks back to you. He seems unsure of how to start, and contemplates you for a time.

"You are Robb Stark?" He finally asks.

How's Beric SMELL? We're a wolf head, that means we've got all those olfactory sensors in the nose now.

That said, how does Thoros smell?

After that, tell the truth. "Robb. Grey Wind. Thingggg. Frey Broke Right. Vengeance."
>>
>>25888194
>No Robb. Only Zuul.

"More than Robb. More than man. King." Give 'em a good snarl too. We're here to impress
>>
>>25888259
>Bonus points for taking advantage of your smelling abilities. Bad points for me not writing that earlier.
>>25888294
>Throwing in this.

You sniff. Harwin smells of sweat, and he shies away. Exhausted. Thoros. Incense, ash, charcoal. Fire. He smells like a fire pit at a temple, but he carries no emblem of the seven. You are too far from your humanity to think what that would mean.

But Beric...Beric smells of gravedirt. He smells of steel, of battles lost, of maggots and scars. He smells like death, a rotted piece of wood about to snap, a rope stretched too taut. Also, cooked rabbit. He had eaten recently. He places a hand on the hilt of the blade at his side.

Focus.

"Robb," You place a hand over your heart, then pat your head, "Grey Wind," You drop both of your hands to your side, and then raise them with a shrug, "More than Robb. More than man. King."

Beric blinks, then looks over to Harwin, opens his mouth to say something, before you bark in anger again, "Frey broke right. Vengeance."

Beric looks back to you again. Raises an eyebrow. No, you have no more to say. Faces from beyond the fire light stare in curiosity. Beric finally speaks to Harwin, "Well, speaking as a man with," He hesitates, glances at Thoros, then back to Harwin,"My experiences, this is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Good work. Thoros? What do you think?"

The man in the robe stares at you, disquieted severely.

He glances over at Beric, then back to you. He shakes his head, "Not my work. Not any kind of work I'm familiar at all with, but," He shrugs, "He, it, well. I think we can trust him. He has had a great deal taken away- more than any of us can understand."
"And, him saying he is a king?" Beric looks suspiciously at you. He sees you as a threat, some part of you thinks.
"He at least was acclaimed by the Northmen, after what happened to his father. Joffrey is no true King, you and I know that Beric. We came here to stop a monster in the name of the King, and now the monster is protected, and we are the outlaws. Let it be my friend, let it be for now," Thoros has a very annoyed look pass over his face, then turns with irritation, "And for the love of Rh'llor, would someone please get a piece of parchment for the poor thing? Having to speak through a wolf's head would drive anyone mad," he grumbles, turning away in to the camp.

Beric sighs, almost deflates as he relaxes, and then looks up with a sad smile, "Vengeance, hm? Well, me and my lot are for justice, and by my estimate," He offers a hand to you, "What happened at the Twins sure wasn't just. We were just about to go to the river, see who we can find, give them proper burial. I figure it's the least we can do. Care to come along?" This isn't killing Ryman, some part of you rages.

He expects you to shake his hand. Someone comes running up with a parchment, and bit of charcoal. You still retain some literacy, though you are going to be blunt at best.

I don't know who we could write too. Reed and Manderly wouldn't trust at all, and Winterfell is already gone...

Shake the man's hand, but refuse the paper and ask for food. Rabbit.

“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater. Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Quick question, could be used later on.

If we were raised by the Old Gods, do we earn their gifts if we behave accordingly?
For example, if we take what we need, like the Ironborn, we get gifts related to strength or just go full Cthulhu.
>>
Reposting, but the Frey's tale just amuses me in light of this quest:

>Jared Frey tells Lord Wyman Manderly that, contrary to the true story, the Red Wedding was actually Robb Stark’s work. According to the Frey fictionalization, Robb changed into a wolf-man beast before the eyes of the Freys and tore out the throat of Jinglebell, a harmless simpleton. Furthermore, he allegedly would have slain Lord Walder Frey if Ser Wendel Manderly had not put himself in the way. According to this version of the event, the other northmen also turned into wolves to join Robb's attack.
