Over the following days, Gronk sent his tribe out to gather food and wood. The trolls scoured ‘Ead smasha for the stringy mountain goats that provided the Children with most of their food. Many were brought back and gathered in the far corner of the cave. Although terrified by the trolls, they were easily calmed by the goblins. They were penned in by the stacks of wood that littered the cave, all brought in from the mountain. It was soon discovered that, not only did they provide meat, the goats could be milked. No troll was able to do it, but the small, nimble goblins could. Using a cauldron brought with them from the wreckage of their camp, they gathered up and served Gronk the produce of several days milking. All trolls have an instinctive desire to eat and drink everything, knowing that there is little that their powerful stomachs cannot handle. So it was that Gronk chugged back the cauldron quite happily, and pronounced the liquid to his liking. The goblins were congratulated and told to produce more.
While the tribe searched the mountain, Gronk sat for long hours with Tak-Tak and a young bull troll named Moruk. Gronk had determined that Moruk would act as his second, as he had an ideal mixture of smarts and strength, though not enough of either to threaten Gronk. After some days of training, Gronk came to decision. He needed to know more of the world to the south. He told Moruk that he was to go south with five goblins and see what he could. He was also told not to eat anything that could talk, at least not until he’d heard what it had to say. With his smattering of common and cunning use of sign language, as well as the five goblin’s smattering of troll, they could communicate with some articulacy.

It was three days after Moruk left that disaster struck. One of the trolls that had been out on gathering duty had not yet returned, which was not that unusual. Trolls sometimes took their time in returning, particularly if they fell a long way. The falls would rarely kill them, but it would take them some time to find their way back up. It had been assumed that this troll had chased a goat without looking where he was going and had taken a bit of a tumble.
The tribe, or what was left at the cave, was therefore surprised when the troll hurled himself into the cave mouth covered in blood. Deep wounds had been gouged into his sides, while his own claws showed signs of recent combat. When he recovered his breath enough to speak, he grunted and growled to Gronk that the Skull Eatas were coming. They had kill Dargulf and the goblins, and had caught him near the northern foot of the mountain. They had been about to kill him too, but he claimed his faith in Gronk had granted him the strength to escape their claws. He had run all the way back to the cave, giving his injuries no time to heal. With Moruk away, Dargulf dead, and this one injured, things were not looking good. It was at this time all eyes turned to Gronk. This battle would either raise him, or destroy him. The same was true for the Children of the mountain.

Quick update while my food heats up; Think about it like this. It's rare for trolls to fight open warfare. Your opponents have more trolls than you, but are unlikely to attack in the way humans might. They are more likely to cause many non-lethal injuries, but attempt to kill Gronk. It's all about dominance. If Gronk kills their leader, the fights over.

All of Doombell works through magic. Most of the other weaponry as well. The ones that don't kill more allies than enemies. That's a huge cost for development.

Besides, insects are listed as "Exceptional", so I figure this works under some odd definition of technology.

With all eyes on him, Gronk gave out a mighty roar. His lungs emptied themselves over almost a minute of continuous sound. The roar said more than speech ever could. It promised vengeance, it promised death. It inspired confidence, it demanded loyalty and obedience. Most of all though, it was a reminder. He was still Gronk, he was still the marked. And he would prevail.
With his fists swinging, he gathered the trolls at the entrance. He told them to ready themselves for the coming battle and to prepare themselves to kill. By troll tradition, only the leaders of warring tribes would fight to the deaths. It was a mark of how strong their faith was in Gronk that when he said kill, they would kill. The trolls prepared by punching and shoving, roaring and flailing. To get their blood up, they inflicted minor wounds on each other, which healed and disappeared from sight and mind quickly. The pain didn’t though.
While they vented themselves, Gronk spoke to Tak-Tak. He explained that this was a chance for the goblin to win more favour with the trolls than he could ever have dreamed of. He would be as a god to the other goblins, and they would fight each other to do his will. All he had to do was provide Gronk with fire. A fire that would keep burning for hours. With this in mind, Tak-Tak ran to the goblin side of the cave. Much noise was heard, including the death howl of a goat.

After a few hours, the Children set off. Sixteen males, including Gronk, left the cave. Some carried clubs, and many had rock bags. Behind them, five goblins brought up the rear. At the front, Tak-Tak marched with his chest puffed up with pride. Some of the goblins were carrying a large bag, full of some sort of liquid. Some metres ahead of the main party, Gronk knuckled along. His back was hunched forward and his face twisted into a brooding scowl. All he could think about was the little red goblin who had thrown flames at him. Gronk had devoured him, but could not do the same. Last night, he had talked with Tak-Tak about the goblin. Tak-Tak said he used words to make things. The words were ordinary, but there was a powerful force behind them. Lastly, he had told Gronk the word for fire.
After an hour of marching, they hear the howls. There were many and they came from all directions. The Children answered the best they could, with Gronk leading them. Minutes later, the Skull Eatas appeared. They were all around the Children, but didn’t charge. The plateau that all the trolls stood on was quite flat, about fifty metres wide and surrounded by trees. At the southern end of the plateau, a troll that stood out from the others broke through the dense branches of the forest.
Larger even than Gronk, this troll was bedecked in ornamentation. Tokens mad from bone, stone, wood and even some metal covered his massive body. On his face was a mask, made from the bark of a large tree trunk. Scratched into the surface was a crude troll face with a snarling expression. His gait was as close to a swagger as any troll’s can be.

His back strait and eyes narrowed, Gronk bellowed his challenge. After his roar was done, Gronk eyed the troll suspiciously. It seemed to be waiting for something. After a minute or two, it threw back its head and made a ruck-ruck sound. This was the troll equivalent of derisive laughter. After this subsided, the troll seemed to swell as it sucked in air. Then it let loose a roar that shook snow from the trees and made the goblins cover their ears, pained expressions on their faces. When it finished, it was not only clear that what it thought of Gronk, but what it intended to do to him. Another thing was certain, though. It had accepted.

Gronk signalled to Tak-Tak, who beckoned to his goblin followers. They brought forth the bag, and one of the trolls gave Gronk his club. Gronk proceeded to dip his club into the bag’s contents. As he drew it out, Tak-Tak bashed rocks together over it. Several attempts went by, and nothing happened. Just as both Tak-Tak and Gronk started getting desperate, a spark appeared. It fell past the club and dropped into the bag. There was the sickening smell of charred fat. With one more mighty – for a goblin – effort, Tak-Tak struck the rocks together. This time, the spark hit the tip of the club. It ignited with a loud ‘whumph’ of rushing air. All the trolls took a n involuntary step back, even those many metres away and even the enemy leader. When Gronk turned, the light of the flaming club lit his face and scarring from underneath. He looked like a hell spawned monstrosity of death and destruction. Maybe he was.

Shit I just realised we should have brought a goat to this fight.

In an effort to regain face, the masked troll gave another mighty roar and pummelled the ground with his fists. It chucked up great handfuls of snow and rocks, before beating a fist off its chest. Gronk stood impassively through the display, waiting for his moment. When it finally stopped, he held the torch aloft and let loose a long growl. Then he charged. No ceremony, no posturing. He simply lowered his head and hurtled towards his opponent, torch held above his head.

The masked troll stared for a few seconds as Gronk picked up speed, and then remembered himself. Pushing off with its back legs, it used its arms to swing itself into a charge of its own. Soon it was travelling just as fast as Gronk, then faster. Gronk was running, one hand holding the torch. When a troll runs, it’s supposed to use two hands, so it can swing its whole body forward. Gronk was sure that fire would prove a greater ally that speed, however.

As they neared each other, the masked troll tensed itself to spring into a jump. As it did, Gronk lunged forward. The club swung through the air, leaving a trail like a comet. The masked troll tried to push itself backwards, its legs collapsing underneath it. As it fell, the club shoot past its head. Twisting and rolling, the troll regained its feet. Gronks face had now split into a grin of triumph. Swinging the club again, he drove back the other troll. They danced back and forth, the larger troll not daring to brave the flames of Gronk’s weapon but still trying to inflict damage on him. After some minutes, Gronk got to terms with the weapon in his hand. He swung faster and faster, with more confidence than ever. With a backhand slash, he hit his opponent in the chest. The many totems and trophies of the masked troll served as something like chain mail, but with not quite as much efficiency. Several of the wooden ones caught fire, causing him to yelp and punch himself in the chest. Stumbling away, he threw himself chest down into the snow. Club above his head, Gronk stepped forward to deliver a crippling blow.

Let's leave the guy alone now, it was just a bit of honest criticism. Focus on the fight, your side of it is coming soon.

As he brought it down, the other troll rolled to one side with a flicker of motion. The torch missed by a hair’s breadth, andhis the snow with a crackling noise. Looking down in dismay, Gronk saw no fire. There was nothing but the charred end of the club and a lot of blackened snow. As he stared at it, he sensed a rising motion just outside his range of vision. He turned and was then looked up. The other troll’s mask was half a metre above him, but the burnt hole in the troll’s layer of ornaments was close to his eyes. It seemed that the club had not done the damage he thought it had. With a growl, he attacked.
Whereas before, the fight had been obviously one sided, now it was a beating. The larger troll had far more experience and was tearing bloody chunks out of his smaller, and younger, rival. He kicked, punched, gouged and butted Gronk. Doing his best to respond, Gronk bit and scratched at whatever he could, inflicting some minor wounds. But even as the masked troll worked Gronk’s body with a furious vengeance, there was one part he avoided even touching; the twisted flesh that covered the right side of Gronk’s face. This aversion was picked up on by Gronk quite quickly. Biding his time in the same way his opponent had minutes before, Gronk waited for his moment. Then it came.

A few thoughts walk slowly through Gronk`s mind. What was that word again? Fa-fa-fai...FIRE!

The two trolls circled, trading punches and growls. Time favoured the larger of the two, as his eye would soon grow back. Gronk couldn’t recover his fire, not without running away. If he did that, no amount of faith would stop his tribe from helping tear him limb from limb. As their blows became more serious, the other troll seemed to start focussing his attacks. He pounded Gronk’s head and face with his knuckles, before locking his claws into the right side of Gronk’s face.

A strange quirk of the troll metabolism had saved Gronk when the fire struck his face. Unable to properly treat the flesh, his body had simply abandoned it. While still attached to him, he couldn’t feel anything through it. Thus, the claws now tearing it from his face did no more damage than the snow melting on his leg. As his opponent tried to tear his face off, Gronk dug his claws into the unmasked troll’s belly. With both hands, he tore open his guts and pushed his hand inside.

At the same moment, the dead flesh on the right side of his face came loose. With a horrific sound of rending meat, it tore clean off. For a moment, the masked troll had a look of triumph on his face. But the gore soaked grin on his rival’s face made his smile wilt. Through bloody lips, Gronk spoke one word.

“Fire”

For a moment, nothing seemed to happen. Then both trolls looked down at Gronk’s fist, still buried in the other figures stomach. Nothing was visible, but a smell was now coming from the breach. It wasn’t the smell of hot guts exposed to the world for the very first time. It wasn’t the smell of troll sweat, dank in the air after the heavy fighting. It was the smell of burning flesh and roasting meat. With a slow motion, Gronk pulled his fist up and out of the other troll’s insides. As it emerged, everyone on the plateau saw the telltale orange flickers. Gronk held his hand between his face and his opponent. The dancing fire lit up the wreckage of his face and the comparative smooth health of his opponent’s. Then he thrust the fire into the unmasked troll’s face, mimicking what was done to him. But he didn’t extinguish the fire after a few seconds. He forced it through the other troll’s face and into his skull. There was not even any time to scream. The other troll simply died, his head a mess of burnt flesh and charred bone.

Looking around, Gronk saw horror and glee, mixed across the faces of the surrounding trolls. Those of the Children had gone quiet, no longer roaring their support. Instead, an awful silence filled the air. Gronk turned slowly, surveying every face. Then he let loose a roar. It was quieter and softer than any than had been called before this one, but was so filled with triumph and pain, it resonated with every troll and goblin present. The trolls from the north slowly bent over, shoulders up, elbows on the floor and heads facing down. Their submission as obvious as his victory, Gronk allowed himself another grin. With a loud bellow, he summoned all the trolls to his side. Not one dared resist him, nor delay by a second. With them behind him, he marched back to the cave. With another tribe’s strength joined to his own, the sky was the limit. Behind him, the dead troll’s body was being dragged up the hill. A bloody trail of gore and red snow marked its progress up the slope. Tonight, Gronk would dine well indeed.

After spending only a day in the cave, Gronk set off on a new journey. Rallying all of his most loyal trolls, he set off to the ancient sacrificial site on the northern mountain, God Eata. He was wary of taking too many of the new trolls with him, as they still outnumbered his original followers. In the end, he split their numbers in half, leaving the other half at the cave. Little did he know, but he needn’t have worried. All the trolls of the tribe held him in a state of terrified awe, somewhat diluted by idolatry and love by the original Children.

When they reached the site of the other tribe’s home, they found it to be grand indeed. It looked like a giant cave, but no dug into the mountain. Instead, there were great blocks of stone that were propped against each other to form a massive cube. Instead of a cave mouth, there was a sort of wall of wood that was split into two halves. When one of the new trolls hammered on them with his fist, they split apart to reveal a huge space. It was far larger than the cave at home, and rose up towards the back. At the far wall, there was a great chair made of wood. It bore the wounds of hundreds of claws raking across it, and didn’t look half as grand as it would have done once. But it was still the most impressive, and indeed the only, chair any of them had ever seen. In the cave, there were several females and five cubs.

Should Gronk take the trolls back home or move the tribe to this more impressive cave?

So impressed by the new cave was Gronk, that he decreed that all the tribe had a new home. He sent a group, containing an even mixture of new and old trolls, to ‘Ead Smasha to bring the tribe here. While he waited, he renewed his title of big Papa by getting to know his new females in the most intimate of ways. The first to arrive was Tak-Tak, who had been carried there by one of the trolls, as per Gronk’s orders. When he arrived, Gronk took him to the chair. The little goblin told him it was called a ‘throne’ and the new cave was a ‘building’, maybe even a ‘temple’. When Tak-Tak explained what a temple was, Gronk let loose a bellow of approval. A place of worship, the ideal home for the chosen of the mountains. Then he made the slave chief talk of the red goblin and how he made his fire.

Tak-Tak said that the goblin used words to make things and more words to control them. He’d seen the goblin make a sword (a break was needed here to explain the concept of a sword. When Gronk understood, he decided the idea was a good one) of fire, by telling the fire to make itself into one. Gronk clearly had the power, now all he needed was the words. When the rest of the clan arrived, they brought a surprise with them; three new cubs had been born. Even better, two were female. This was regarded as a good omen by all, as births were very rare and females rarer still.

The goblins are even more terrified of Gronk than ever, but the more civilised surroundings have made them feel more at home. They were only ever given very primitive privacy, and only for breeding. Giving them a specific space in the cave and permanent privacy might make them more compliant/amicable.

In the weeks that followed the move, day after day was devoted to the worship of Gronk. The bull trolls wandered the mountain, looking for gifts for him. Some troll went to the mountain peak and howled out his supremacy for all to hear. And the females... they worshipped him in the oldest way there is. Through it all, Gronk grew even larger. Whether it was because he had eaten another rival or through the devotion of his tribe, he knew not. But now he was big enough to have challenged the old chief without fire or magic.

While many of the trolls sought ways to prove their devotion to him, Gronk spent long hours talking with Tak-Tak. Each learned more of the others language, but Gronk often got frustrated and confused with the rules on Tak-Tak’s. Grammar in particular made him angry. The rules of a language shouldn’t apply to a being as mighty and powerful as him! There seemed to be no way to avoid them however, as they governed the entire language. He once threatened to throw the goblin down the mountain when he was corrected once too often. Slowly, he began to understand more of how to form sentences and describe events.

It was on one of the talking days that the stranger arrived. Gronk was sitting in his chair and talking to Tak-Tak when a great boom echoed from the far end of the temple. All talk ceased and all eyes swivelled to look at the ‘doors’. The young were the only ones who didn’t notice, and they continued pushing and wrestling with each other. Another boom came, and then the doors swung open. In the centre of the open doorway stood a troll. He wouldn’t have been remarkable, except for his clothes; he was wearing some. A large cloak of hide was tied around his neck and belt was looped around his waist. In his right hand, he held a staff as tall as he was. Slowly, this new troll walked the length of the temple. At the other end, Gronk waved Tak-Tak away and sat up straighter on his throne. When the new troll reached him, he spoke.

“Are you Gronk the devourer? Slayer of Gulgamarsh, chief of the Skull Eatas?”

His accent is thick and rich, much cleaner and smoother than the guttural speech used by most trolls. When Gronkk nodded an affirmative, the new troll sank into a bow. The action was new to Gronk but he understood it as one of submission. The stranger introduced himself as Ragnar the Stone Gobbler, wandering shaman. When Gronk asked what shaman meant, Ragnar grinned and raised a hand. With a gesture, he made a stick thrower from the side of the chamber fly to him. He explained that he had heard the chant and come to find the new chief. He wished to render his services.

Got an hour myself for now.

After being questioned for almost a day, Ragnar seems somehow even more mysterious. He speaks of lands in the south, where it never snows. He was not born there, but travelled there with his clan. The chief of his clan lead the tribe to war with the southerners, but was killed by stick throwers and fire. He was made a slave, but eventually won his freedom through strength and natural magical ability. He learned the common tongue and spent some years in the ‘cities’, the common word for the great camps that Tak-Tak told you of. He says he knew about the goblin encampment that your slaves were a part of, and others will come looking for them. Most interestingly, he says that the nearest city, Märlas, is weakly held and lightly defended. Gronk knew better than to trust a troll on first sight, and decided to wait for Moruk to return before he trusted this information.

Meanwhile, the trolls of the tribe had been busy. In tribute to Gronk, many goats and even a bear had been brought back. Many were dead buy most was alive. The bear had been caught alive but had died of starvation on the journey back. The young bull had forgotten to feed it, which earned him a cuff around the head. Others brought exciting news from the west, saying that there was a cave on one of the mountins. Not a normal sort of cave, but one made of wood and a shiny rock. Instead of trolls, there were short humans there. Tak-Tak said that the cave was called a ‘mine’ and went on a long way underground and that the small humans were called ‘dwarfs’.
