“I look ridiculous.” I say a minute or two later as we both stand in front of a full length mirror, examining the fully horror of what the tailors have done to me.

“You look fine.” Sloane assures me.

‘Fine’ is not the word I would use to describe this abomination. I try to keep my jaw from falling open as I look at what they’ve done. I am wearing a long white shirt under a white vest, thin matching gloves on my hands. Some long piece of cloth has been forced down my front, feeling like a whole sail has been stuffed down there in some way. Everything is frilly and lacy, and far too constricting, I feel like I can barely breathe.

“I look like some kind of lacy handkerchief with arms!” I protest, glaring at him. I try to flex my torso around but end up straining against the incredibly tight suit. “And I can barely move, why do you people wear things like this? This is torture!”

“No, this is formal wear, emphasis on wear.” Sloane says sternly, “I will not have you gallivanting around with the nobles of the country in that usual collection of cloth strips you favor.”

I cross my arms, straining against the tight jacket, and glare at him.

“I was just trying to avoid an incident.” He says.

Glare.

“This is local custom, you should respect it.”

Glare.

“You actually look fine.”

Glare.

Sloane sighs, “Whatever, just don’t make a fool of yourself tonight, remember I have to deal with any mess you might create.”

The paladin turns and leaves the room.

I pull at the horrific amalgam of cloth and lace I have been entombed in, but I can barely loosen it. I look at the set again, feeling a little sad. This is clearly a fairly expensive set, the workmanship is obvious, but it’s just so terrible I can’t even begin to comprehend what the tailor who made this was thinking. The ridiculous shirt is the first to go, after I figure out how to work the toggles, and the gloves are just absurd, they don’t even fit over my claws. Under the shirt I find what seems to be a scarf, about five feet long if I’m any judge, I set it aside for later. The jacket is salvageable, and I put it back on, though I leave it unclasped in front. I remove my saber from my belt and exchange the worn leather belt for a finer one, reattaching the sword. Finally I put the scarf back on, tying it loosely and throwing the excess over my shoulder. I rest my hand on my saber hilt and admire the effect in the mirror.

While white is not my favorite color for formal occasions, I think it looks tolerably dashing, kind of like a noble pirate or perhaps a dashing prince. A little presumptuous of course, but I certainly like it a lot more than the great fabric monstrosity that Sloane forced upon me. Yes, much better. I feel a tremor in the floor and scent the air, detecting numerous unfamiliar scents wafting up from far away. It seems like the guests are arriving, I should head on down. With one last look at the mirror, I leave the dressing room and head towards the sound of talking.

I eventually reach a balcony overlooking the entrance hall. Below me streams of men and women in fancy clothes even more painful looking than my own are flowing in through the open doors, a small army of attendants rushing to meet them and serve their every whim. I close my eyes and listen, hearing a dozen conversations float up through the still air. Here a woman is discussing the latest imports from across the sea, there a man speaks of trade agreements and family lines, everywhere is the chatter of the idle rich. I remember it well from my homeland, the language is different, but the words are the same.

I hear a familiar voice and look down to see Sloane standing awkwardly to one side trying to avoid being pulled into conversation by various noble patrons, giving terse responses to their questions before walking somewhere else to escape. Blake is standing dejectedly next to the snack table under the close eye of Buri, and Galen and Sal’vir are walking the floor, taking an interested look at the various visitors.

I wait on the balcony for a little while, until the party gets well and truly started, a string band playing soft music in the corner, the clink of plates and glasses accenting the hum of conversation. Once again I am reminded of similar functions I attended back home. Of course the music was different and the formal wear more sensible, but the tone was the same. The greats of society had gathered together, and were trying to avoid ruffling each other’s feathers, while puffing out their own.

Figuring that it was time to get down there and enjoy the evening, I descend the stairs to the waiting crowd below. I see Sloane passing by and give him a little wave, smiling as I watch the paladin’s jaw fall open.

I try to figure out what just happened, but decide I’d rather not know, so I shrug to myself and slither into the party proper.

The character idea is that he is innocent and naive. No dark troubled past, no terrible secret, no haunting failure, and that one problem has almost led to legitimate disaster.

If he were a sue he would have glided out of those problems without a backwards glance because he's just perfect, not barely escape by the skin of his teeth at great personal effort.

And, must I say it again, nearly die to save someone he just met from certain death, paying the price of winning in pain and blood.

I tell the story with the easy confidence that comes from long experience. It seems that my many nights of entertaining the patrons in the bar back at our inn has finally paid off, my small audience becoming engrossed in the tale of our adventure down into the dark crypt. I choose to leave out my confusion over Sal’vir’s gender, that would hardly fit the narrative of dashing adventure I am telling, but the rest I leave unaltered. I play up the unfolding mystery of learning the identity of the necromancer, the near disaster of the battle with the skeletons, and finally the surprise at the revelation of the true nature of the long dead lord of the labyrinth.

While the male takes longer to get into the story, his mate quickly becomes enthralled, clearly carried away by the words. I end the story with our exiting the tomb after laying the necromancer to rest, making sure to tell his own story as well as that of us. I am not the best judge of human facial expression, but it seems that my story has been well received by their reaction.

“A fine tale.” The female says, giving me a little round of applause.

I tuck my arm in front of me and bow, “You honor me, It warms a storyteller’s heart to hear his tale well received. Now if you will excuse me, I think I would like to wander a bit, Sir, Lady.”

I bow again to each in turn, and set off to wander the hall. I get a lot of strange looks, but I simply explain that I am an adventurer from a faraway land who helped Sir Barkley with a pressing issue and they seem to accept it. In fact, they seem to find me intriguingly exotic, and I spend more than one conversation simply explaining the differences between Yuan Ti and human societies.

But those chats end as easily as they begin, so after explaining the intricacies of our marriage system for the third time I extricate myself from the latest conversation as diplomatically as I can. The reception is in full swing now, a few couples on the dance floor, a few more guests arriving late. I scan the crowd, looking for my friends. I am about to head over and talk to the elf, when I see our host Sir Barkley striding across the floor, what can only be his wife in tow. He passes close to me and I fall in beside him, his stride slowing.

“Hello Sir Barkley, a fine party you are throwing, especially on such short notice.”

“Thank you.” He says, a trifle absently, “I try my best in difficult situations.”

“I can only imagine the difficulty of running a house like this.” I say, honestly.

“It is difficult, but rewarding, now if you will excuse me?” He slips off to talk to someone, though his wife does not follow for a moment.

“You are Solaron correct? The serpent bard?” She says, examining me.

“Yuan Ti.” I correct, “And yes, I am he.”

She considers me for a moment, “You aided my husband out of a particularly difficult spot, almost a shame, I enjoyed watching him sweat for a little while.”

Solaron, as someone who's followed this bit of writefagging from its inception, you are way too defensive about the criticism you get. But the guy addressed that by putting in the disclaimer that he hadn't read the whole thing. Seeing as Solaron failed to address his post entirely and instead went on to call him a troll later on, one has to wonder if any of his criticisms ever were touched on.

Aside from that, Solaron is so fucking awful towards people that give him anything less than unchecked praise that all legitimate critics are just going to leave him at the mercy of the trolls for being so hard to talk to rationally.

I try to respond as well as I can, and in this case I was referring to someone else as the person who said they didn't actually read the story. At least that is what they implied.

Saying that I am awful is dissapointing, I am trying to be as hospitable and polite as possible, and have repeatedly asked to hear criticism and listen to reader's opinions, regardless of what those opinions are.

I just have time to wander over to the refreshment table and pick up a glass of wine when I hear a commotion behind me. Nothing so dramatic as clashing steel or shouts of battle, but conflict nonetheless. Curious, I turn to see what’s going on. I see that Lady Rowena has joined her husband again, and the two of them are squaring off against another couple, the tension between them palpable.

“Sir Aquitaine.” I hear Sir Barkley say, tersely.

“Sir Barkley.” Aquitaine responds.

There is silence between them for a long time, Sir Barkley finally breaking the uncomfortable moment by addressing Aquitaine’s wife.

“Constance, it has been a long time, how do you do?”

“Fine.” She says coolly. Mrs. Constance Aquitaine is wearing a green dress that reaches all the way to her feet, with spindly green shafts curving down from her shoulders. Honestly it reminds me a bit of the outfits we wore back home to dinner parties.

“Surely something interesting must have happened since last we spoke.” Lady Rowena says, trying feebly to strike up a conversation.

“Quite a few things,” Constance replies, “None of them any of your business miss.”

Lady Rowena frowns a little, but tries to maintain good face. I find myself disliking Lady Constance a little, though I have just met her, so I should be a little more forgiving.

Your pace is godawful for how often you make these threads. You should instead write up a full blown "chapter" to completion and post it all at once instead of dragging it out like this. And you should probably have a less serialized, questlike neverending plot.

And it doesn't really show. I understand writing can be slow coming and all, but you really don't need these threads here so much if this is all you can produce. A better idea would be to just save up all your writing over a week, post it all at once on a Saturday or something, and then repeat next week. It might even give you time to refine the plot and characters so they wouldn't be so flat and meandering.

I'll consider it, though that would be saddening for me. I know it sounds petty, but knowing that a lot of people are enjoying the story each moment as I am writing it helps me to keep going. When I see that they're happy, it makes me so energized and helps me come up with new ideas and jokes, not to mention being able to interact with them, see their reactions as I go, and be able to get a little interaction in the story, like with Solaron's formal wear.

And, simply put, they oftentimes give me good ideas, like the 'tremor sense' or psychology, or allowing me to get answers to questions about what sort of content they want to see.

I will consider it, but honestly it would make my part of this harder, and a lot less fun.

And by saving up the story for one large dump, you get to save your energy for a Q&A session every week and bouncing ideas off of one another. Not to mention that sectioned installments catch the eye and the reader better. You are trying to do episodic but refuse to break the story into episodes, instead just thrusting out random plot as it comes to you and the end result is incredibly sloppy.

And yes, it is rather petty to say that the only reason you are doing this story is so that you can have a 24/7 endless stream of adulation pointed in your direction.

You have some very valid points, and I know I sound like a petty pretentious jerk when I talk like that, but I really try not to be.

I will try this method, but I just want to explain where I'm coming from.

I have always found it hard to keep going as a writer. I have produced a few works that never see the light of day, and eventually I just got tired of them and moved on to something else. Then I posted the first three pieces of Solaron's story, and it just took off, it kept me going and helped me write more than I ever have before, combined, in two weeks.

So, again, I will try this method, and see if it works out for me.

For once, the smile on Barkley’s face is genuine. “Oh no, we are doing quite well here, in fact we have received a sudden windfall recently.”

“Really?” Aquitaine asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Indeed, I am sure my good fortune will secure the good name and status of the Barkley house for a long time to come. Such a shame though that you could not host our little reception, I had looked forward to seeing the present state of your manor. The old place was looking a little under the weather the last time I visited, I do hope your estate is in better condition than the last time, for your sake.”

Aquitaine grits his teeth, but responds well. “Yes, a great shame, I should have liked you to see the state of the place, I daresay it is in better condition than your own hall. In fact we just renovated the main hall.” He looks around the vaulted room we occupy, “This old style is simply not up to standard anymore, so much more can be done with modern knowledge and art.”

Barkley surreptitiously looks around the hall but stops when he notices Aquitaine looking at him critically. “Why then did you refuse to host the banquet at your hall? It sounds as if you would have been ideally suited.”

Aquitaine recovers quickly. “The renovations in the main banquet hall were not yet completed, it would hardly do to host a formal reception when there is scaffolding everywhere and sweaty workmen running around the place would it?”

They continue to snipe at each other as I watch, a guilty grin forming over my face. I hear footsteps beside me and smell Galen at my side.

“Enjoying the reception?” I hear his gentle voice say.

“Enjoying the show is more like it.” I respond, wincing a little at the ongoing fencing match between the two nobles. “And trying to stay out of the danger zone.”

We stand there and watch for another minute.

“They’re still going at it.” I say with more than a little awe. “Just how long can two people give off the impression of not hating each other?”

“For as long as their temper holds I suspect.” Galen says, taking a sip of his water.

I just shake my head and watch the two couples going at each other like a pack of impeccably polite wolves. The Sirs are discussing the quality of their respective horses, the Ladies are discussing the relative merits of each other’s dresses.

“You seem surprised Solaron.” Galen says, looking at me sideways, “Are your people not like this?”

I am about to deny his implied claim, but stop to consider. I think back to a function not unlike this one back in my homeland, where I saw my father cornered a major merchant and began discussing trade agreements. The each remained completely civil throughout the entire exchange, at least on the surface. Look a little closer and they couldn’t have been much more hostile unless they were trying to bite each other.

“I guess not.” I admit in the end, “Though we don’t usually go at each other over things like this, minor posturing and the like.”

Galen gives me a curious look, so I go on.

“Yuan Ti don’t usually engage in this sort of verbal fencing match over things like paintings and decoration, we usually reserve such confrontations for more important things like matters of wealth and political power.”

“I find that hard to believe.” Galen says, watching the nobles who are still at each other’s metaphorical throats.

“Do you mean to tell me that your people almost never get into fights like this? Or argue over the ‘little things’ as it were?”

“My people don’t usually care about the ‘little things’ as you call them.” I reply with a shrug. “We tend to leave each other alone unless we have a reason not to. Parties like this, for example.” I indicate the room around us with a wave of my arm. “We have functions like this all the time back home, the nobles and the wealthy sharing a drink with the problem solvers. The ones with the power come to procure the service of the ones who can act, and the actors seek the patronage of a wealthy house. Look over there for instance.”

I point to a pair of males talking as they lean against the wall. One wears a long embroidered cape, the other a more somber set of clothes and a long feather in his tricorn hat.

“There you have it, a noble and a merchant without a doubt. They are probably discussing the price of importing or exporting some usable resource, the merchant trying to land a profitable contract and the noble looking to exchange his surplus goods for some coin. They may have skin instead of scales, but I could tell those two anywhere in the world.”

Galen looks at me, a little surprised.

“I would not have picked you for being politically savvy my friend.”

I shrug again and sip my wine. “Father was a powerful man, he often attended functions like this. It was expected that he bring along the children to join him when we were old enough. I would have rather been elsewhere, but with my mother and siblings around me I couldn’t really help but pay attention. And you pick up a few things after your tenth formal dinner.”

“Good that you did.” Galen says, “Such knowledge should serve you well in your line of work.”

Galen considers for a few moments.

“What you said earlier, your people seem quite reclusive. Do you really not take that much of an interest in the lives of your fellow Yuan Ti?”

“Not greatly.” I say, “We don’t just abandon each other, we have friendship and love of course, but we don’t take as much interest in random people, or sudden acquaintances. At least most of us don’t.”

“Sounds like a hard way to live.” The cleric says. “Going through life without people caring about you. As a cleric I have to care about people, it’s in the job. I bring comfort and healing to souls who are injured and suffering, I find it hard to believe that a functioning society could be sustained when the people don’t care that much about each other.”

“I see your point.” I say, “But consider the other side. If this were a Yuan Ti function, Sirs Barkley and Aquitaine would not be at each other’s throats like a pair of rabid dogs, competing to see who can bark the loudest. Rather they would simply acknowledge each other and get on with their business. Despite what you might think, we Yuan Ti live rather free lives, if nobody takes an interest in your life that means nobody is watching, you are free to do more or less what you want. We don’t let people go about weakening our nation mind you, but so long as you don’t hurt those around you, one can do more or less whatever they want.”

“I had not thought of it that way.” Galen says, “But it still seems like a very cold way to live.”

I shrug. “Perhaps, but it’s the world that produced me, so it can’t be all bad.”

Calling it for the night.

I will try the suggested strategy of writing a long chunk and then posting it, and devoting my time to answering questions and discussing the story with readers.

Honestly I just started writing this way and never thought to do it any other way, so it's time for an experiment.

Not sure when I'll be back, but I will post back again when I have a nice big chunk ready to go.
