You were just getting comfortable, too. "What did you want to talk about?" You ask Holly, shifting forward uncomfortably in your commander's seat- Black Jack's turret actually makes an excellent and very private interview room. You could talk forever about Black Jack- plus it's a nice safe subject without anything embarassing that could be asked about it.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and you want to keep talking about your tank.

"Well, to start, what can you tell me about Oorai's tank team." Holly asks, putting her pen to her notebook and looking across the gun at you.

>"They've got heart, we just lack tanks..."

You think for a second. "Honestly? A week into their training they were able to take on and defeat St. Gloriana's tank team. Since then we've been training hard nearly every single day- I think they're ready for this tournement." It's true, you hope. The entire team had made huge strides in a month of training, going from literally not even having working tanks to a professional-level team.

You lean forward aggressively and grin. "You look at the tanks we've got, and teams like Saunders or Black Forest Peak might laugh- but our team is diverse, our crews trained and as far as I've seen evidence for, Black Jack here is among the most powerful tanks on the field." You try not to let too much pride leak into your voice during the last sentence. Which distracts you from the one that comes after it. "Not to mention we're lead by the brilliant Miho Nishizumi, her entire family is legendary for their exploits in Senshado."

She nods. "So I've heard- her mother and sister are both very well regarded." Her tone is neutral, but then she asks a question you'd been hoping to avoid. "And what are your thoughts on Miss Nishizumi?" She asks, obviously less than oblivious.

You shift nervously, before finding you calm confidence again. "Miho's an excellent tactical and strategic commander," you say with a nod. "She incredibly flexible-" Shouldn't have said that. Should not have said that. "...strategically. She can look at what some would consider a bad situation and find a way to work with everything she's got to not just give a good fight but win." You smile warmly. "Anyone else might've given up, but she looked at what our team had and found a way to not just make it work, but make it effective."

Holly nods, before writing something down. "You speak well of her professionally, what do you think of her personally?" She says. You feel your eye twitch and smell marinara sauce somewhere. "Have you spent much time with her outside of senshado?" She asks looking up from her notes at you.

You swallow, hard. You'd woken up this morning with Miho asleep on your shoulder- did she know? How?

Well it's very simple - instead of waiting for the Tiger to follow us into the enclosed building before starting a grand duel, we merely rotate the turret 180 degrees and hit it as it's entering, since our gun is more than capable of penetrating its hull armor anywhere, even without HVAP.

Since this is a quest, not an anime, we can be smart.

Holly looks at you, a bit annoyed that you sidestepped what she was actually asking, and likely deduces that Miho might be a bit of an unstable subject for you- "Speaking of the council- evidently they gave you a great welcome?" Problem with the P.1000 and P.1500 is that they're strategic weapons- better used as mobile fortresses against fixed positions and troop concentrations.

While their armor is likely thick enough to easily bounce anything we've got, in turn they'd also be completely useless against us.

Honestly, tanks like the Maus, E100 and O-I were about as large as you could get and still have an effective anti-tank roll.

>HFW blue Black Jack

You laugh a bit nervously, leaning back in your commander's seat, relaxing again now that you're not talking with a reporter about your somewhat secret girlfriend. "Not going to lie- there were a few..." You search for the right phrase. "...Cultural misunderstandings? But we worked them out quickly enough. Honestly, our handlers back in the states did a great job preparing us; language lessons, cultural immersion. Considering they only had a few months to do so..." You shrug.

"What about Oorai itself? Were there any problems assimilating?" She asks, her pen scribbling across the pad. She already knows the answer- she's here herself.

"Absolutely not- The entire town has been nothing but welcoming and accepting. I don't think I've met a person here that's had a harsh word about me or my crew." Looking back, you're actually a bit amazed- one of the things that you'd been warned about was that it could often be difficult for outsiders- gaijin- to really fit in.

"I've seen that." Holly says, smiling. "You mentioned cultural misunderstandings?"

You force a smile, your blood going up a degree or two just thinking about that mess. "Well, the school council initially had our tank painted in Oorai's school colors- They didn't really mean anything by it, especially since the first that happened with most of the other tanks were painted in, well, let's call them non-standard camo patterns." You say, remember the bright pink Lee and the 38(t)'s gold paint job.

You continue after a second. "I guess we fit right in, come to think of it- but eventually we went back to more standard schemes in the interest of, y'know, not being spotted a mile away." You crack a smile. "Strategic decision."

Holly chuckles a bit at that. "So, aside from Black Jack, what do you think of the other tanks on your team?"

You snort. "Where do you want me to start?" You ask, half jokingly. She looks at you in a way that tells you she's looking for an answer. "Alright then..." You say, leaning forward a bit. "Start with Turtle Team- the Panzer 38(t)- old Czech design that the Germans co-opted during the war. It's light, and pretty agile and their driver, Yuuzu, gets a lot out of that. Their gunner is still coming along- she's aggressive but impatient and Anzu, their commander." You shrug. "No complaints really- she does her job, though she's most useful outside the tank, getting us funding and making connections."

You take a breath. "After that we've got Duck Team- they used to be the volleyball club, but evidently it got the axe. They actually started on a Japanese I-Go..." You pause to savor the look of incredulity on Holly's face. "Yeah- even with that old thing they still made excellent scouts- helps that Shinobu drove it like she stole it. Eventually we replaced it with a British Excelsior- experimental 'universal tank' design that was meant to have a better mobility than their older infantry support tanks while still having a better gun and armor than their cruiser tanks." You nod. "Good gun, good mobility, and I know Duck Team has the guts to bring that thing to its limits."

You pause to let Holly finish writing a few more things down. "The Lee is crewed by Rabbit Team- Freshman girls. They're young but you saw what they painted on their tank..."

Holly looks up and smiles. "Oh yeah! The Monty Python reference!" Dammit- even she's seen that movie.

"The Lee's a solid all-arounder. The 75's a good gun, but the sponson mount limits its use." You continue. "They've got a capable and aggressive crew, though, and that counts for a hell of a lot."

"After that is the StuG: Hippo Team. Excellent gun, good reliable armor and decent mobility- even if it lacks a turret. It's crew is the History Club- their gunner, on the first day, was taking potshots at me from over 800 yards and even scored a hit." You leave out the bit about the shot bouncing off the turret at that range and how they were immediately spotted and taken out afterwords. "They've also got a great mind for using ambushes, distractions and terrain to their advantage. Seems they were born for the StuG life." You joke with a grin.

"And what about the Panzer IV?" Holly says- "Miho's command tank?"

>"Pz.IV's an excellent tank- probably the best on the team besides 'Jack"
>"Anglerfish team are probably the overall best crew among them."
>"Miho's an excellent tank commander and she has experience with the Mk. IV."

You smile, nodding. "Anglerfish- our command crew." You say. "The Panzer IV, with the exception of our Pershing, is probably the most capable tank on the team- there's a damn good reason that it was the only German tank in continuous production throughout World War II. It's got an excellent balance of speed, firepower and armor- it was perhaps one of the most successful tank designs of the war." You pause and take a breath.

"As for the crew? I would consider them, overall, the best trained and most dangerous crew on the team-" You pause and smile. "Barring Grizzly, of course. Got to give my crew their due, but they've been at this for a year and a half while most of Anglerfish's crew has had less than a month."

"What do you think makes them so effective?" Holly asks quietly.

"Miho." You say instantly. "Miho's leadership has allowed that crew to flourish, even compared to the rest of the team. So far her team has been the only crew able to disable Black Jack in combat- and they did that on their first day." You nod to yourself- you don't even feel that embarassed by that fact anymore. "That is not to say that Yukari, Saori, Hana and Mako aren't great crew by themselves, but Miho brings them together and brings out the best in them, which is ultimately what a Commander's most important job is."

Holly nods as she listens to your answer, silently penning along in her notebook. "I see- I think that's all I need today, Commander." She says, finally closing her notebook.

"That's it?" You say, surprised that it was already over. "Wait... All you need today?"

Holly smiles as she opens the gunner's hatch. "Yep! I'm going to be staying through the tournement- there's a bigger story here than just one crew." She says with a smile. "This is going to explode- in a good way- and I want to make sure I'm right where I need to be to get that story out to the world!"

I'd actually think the Italians. They could do with some help.

Although of what kind I couldn't being to imagine. If we have to keep to country images then the only way they could get decent tanks would be to rely on foreign tanks gifted to the Italian royalist army when they defected except I don't know if that actually happened.

I was the same way- in fact my SP was the reason that this quest was about a Pershing- I gave up the ghost a few weeks after 8.8 when I got into a dagger fight with a Tiger I and lost because he put 6 shots in a row through my Upper Frontal Glacis without a single bounce- all my skills in juking and turret bobbing to cover my weak-points didn't mean squat against a Tier VII.

Shameful what WG did to to the SP- took what was at one time a pretty fun tank and absolutely crippled the one thing that made it work, while giving it trivial buffs to mobility. They didn't even have the balls to call it what it really was- they kept referring to it as a "rebalance."

On the other hand, 9.0 and the Havok engine are supposed to include a feature where spaced armor gets shot away after a while, so maybe this was just a pre-nerf to get everyone to stop playing the SP before 9.0 *really* kills the poor thing.
