You have five men coming to kill you, and four bullets in your rifle.

It's an antique, your father's gun. Dated back to the Algerian Revolution. An old M1C Garand, with a stock held together with tape, glue, and good wishes, but it shot straight and true. Just wish it had more ammo right now.

You're in a ksar, a ruin far to the south of the territory the Mu'awiya militia held. You hoped they wouldn't risk irritating the tribes that held the desert, but sure enough, you see the five of them approaching through your binoculars. A Ford Ranger, with a machine gun mounted on the back bouncing through the rocky trail heading your way. It's about- 900? 800 meters out? They're coming in slow- two in the front cab, two lazing in the back, and one on the gun, the silhouette you can recognize even at this distance, a DShK. Heavy machine gun. Old, but more than powerful enough to tear apart the sandstone of this ruin.

You set the binoculars to the side, slide away from the hole in the wall. They were heading this way, surely. Mu'awiya would not let you go that easily then.

Four bullets. Five men.

You're a good shot. Let them close to 600 meters, you could probably take out the driver, duck for cover, pick them off as they approach. If they weren't fanatics, they would clear off before you ran out of ammo.

But they would be back with more men.

Let them close, get in to the ksar, and you could hopefully put down one of them, grab his gun, and finish the rest before any escape.

If you could avoid being torn to pieces by the DShK. And if they get in close, they have the advantage of numbers and automatics.

The ksar you're hiding in is a simple fort- one tower four floors high (You're in it right now) closest to the approaching enemies, then a square bordered by wind swept walls, with one open hole to serve as a gate.

You mechanically start packing, keeping an eye out the window the whole time, watching the cloud of dust grow larger and larger.

>Go.
>>
>>28506260

Take out the driver and wait for them to approach. They're not going to be lugging the DShK with them, certainly.
>>

You are a trained marksman. As it is, they're going slowly enough down the road towards your position that you can pop the driver, especially with time enough to steady and wait for them to come in to comfortable range. Give me 2 1d100 rolls, 70 and below succeed, only one success necessary.

Success.

You zip your duffel bag shut, dragging it over to the window with one hand, grabbing your rifle with the other. The DShK has range enough to pelt your position, but the gunner will have to aim over the cab of the truck, and you can quickly abandon your position.

You set down your duffel, and steady your gun, eye on the scope. A little pale smear against the shining of the windshield, you focus on him. Rest the barrel on your hand. 'Bone is steadier than flesh,' your father always said, and you let your gun rest on your arm rather than try to grip it.

The truck bounces, comes over a small rise, and decelerates coming down a small hill. 600 meters. Not much wind today either. You hold your breath, concentrate. Squeeze the trigger slowly.

Your M1C kicks hard, and the split stock doesn't help much- but you see the truck's windshield go red, jerk and veer. You hope it would spin out, sending the gun off the bed, but it steadies rapidly. No luck there.

3 bullets. 4 enemies. They'd be getting the DShK up by now. You see the gunner is scrambling to regain his seat behind the machine gun. You can't see your enemies in the back right now, but they'd be going to cover. The man riding shotgun is quite visible though, shaking the driver. You murmur a hollow praise to God your father taught you.

They don't have much cover between their position and your ksar. The old kings that held these trade routes knew the power of position and clear lines of sight. But, if they gunned the truck, they could cross the distance quickly.

Bullets could cross faster though.

You don't allow yourself the luxury of testing their accuracy. Thin, black crossed lines settle on the machine gunner's head. You think you actually recognize him- that ugly split nose at least. He was one of the men that molotoved your place. He's sweating, shouting, bringing the heavy barrel up. If you recall right, he was actually French born. Trying to get in touch with his roots. Didn't matter.

Forked wood slams in to your shoulder again, a super sonic crack, and then he's looking up cross eyed at a dark red hole in his head. Another shell casing bounces off of the ground, and you turn for the stone carved stairs, hefting your bag over your shoulder. You hear a distant roar of an engine as you leap down the stairs.

2 bullets. 3 enemies.

Nineteen years old, you had a revelation. You had drifted from job to job, from country to country, as the Arab Spring turned from hopeful to bloody. You thought had no marketable skills, until one fateful day in N'Goussa, Mu'awiya came calling, saying he knew your father. He offered money and food, if you worked for him. You accepted- as it turned out, you DID have a talent after all. You knew how to shoot.

Two years later, you had a dispute about your contract. Namely, you had ended up killing his son.

You were hoping that if you ducked him long enough, the other militias could tear him to pieces, and let you get to Oran. There, you had money in a bank, and a Sicilian that owed you a favor.

But first, you'd have to survive.

You break out in to the court, hearing the revving of the truck, and a smattering of gunfire. Charging straight on then. Must be a hefty bounty for you.

In the courtyard, you have cover, if they're coming this way. Nothing that could stand up to the DShK though.

You take a glance back. You've got time. And the old sandstone has plenty of hand holds and chips in it. Two stories high, but oh well. You climbed higher on the trees back at home. You run for the wall, pulling the Garand around you with the rifle strap. You're a bit weighed down, but oh well. Starving out in the desert was a bad idea.

You jump grabbing on to the hand holds- and succeed! You climb up, higher and higher, wondering why you thought this would be hard in the first place- you quash your celebratory thoughts though. You were lucky enough to have gotten a lift from a Berber you knew, but that truck would certainly be handy. You get your head up over the top of the wall, glance for the truck- it's pulling around the road, just two hundred meters out. They've got another man on the gun, noticeably hunched over, firing shots at the tower you used to be. The tower starts shattering, clouds of dust and and stone flying from it.

Old stone doesn't hold up well. You shake your head, grab at the next hand hold, and heft up, reaching with your other arm- and then hear something go crack quite a bit closer.

You scrabble and scrape at the wall, grabbing for any sort of hand hold. Nothing. You fall in to the void, biting back the scream you wanted to emit. You fall back, hard, and feel your-

Nah, keep at what you're doing, dice-wise. Don't worry about it. Bad rolls happen.

I was thinking we should have laid low within the fort - even if they could tear up the ksar with the DShK, what are the chances of them hitting us? But oh well.
>>
>>28507105
Hmmm. That's a tough one. I would say Ankle Twist, but only if we then take a choice where we get to keep our bag. Otherwise, losing the gun stock would be better than losing our entire bag, since we'll be able to do a patch job at some point.

Wait until they get close enough, they won't know which window I am shooting out of.

Shoot the man in the drivers seat at about 100 yards.

They can't carry the DShK with them so someone else will have to get in the driver's seat

And then I have four stationary targets, or they can try to hoof it to the fort in which case I can hit three of them when they slow down for breath (running across the desert is hard work)

When the fourth one gets in the castle to kill me, he'll be winded and fatigued from all that running. His aim will be off and he will be weakened.

Surprise him behind the doorway with a knife to the gut. Bear him to the ground while pretending my other arm is a sewing machine.

You shake your head, and jerk up- then feel your foot dance with fire, and wince. Twisted your ankle. Damn it! You shift your weight on to your other foot. You hope you don't have to walk. The nearest town was at least 30 kilometers away, and the inhabitants were hardly friendly.

You ignore it. You throw your bag under a dry and gnarled bush, and hobble for the center. It might have been a fountain once, but it was dry, solid, flush to the wall to the left of the gate, and gave you a good view of the entrance. You slump behind the stone, wincing again. Despite your instincts, you pull your leg up and under yourself, growling curses the entire time. There. Tucked away pretty well, and you're already covered in dust. You blend in well.

Two bullets. Three killers coming your way.

You glance at the gate- it was wide and tall to permit horses in, but not that wide or tall. Shooting the driver as soon as he entered might be a good idea. They'd be cramped getting out, and you could keep them in the gate way. But you'd have the shoot the DShK gunner quickly if you wanted to survive. And you only had two shots. If the third held his courage, he'd be able to get up on the gun and hose you down.

If you waited, maybe they'd drift around, away from the gun to try to find you. Heck, maybe if you waited long enough, they'd leave. You glance at the far wall, frown. Would they notice the broken stone and think you vaulted it?

You hear the approaching truck, the men shouting out. Shouting that they'd kill you, and drag your corpse back to your father's grave for him to see.

Two bullets.

You roll your shoulder, ignore the pain in your ankle, breach, and bring the stock up to your shoulder. Two bullets. Three enemies. You wish you had time enough to take the scope off the thing, but you had no way of predicting how soon these guys would push through. You'd have to make do.

You hear the crunching of gravel, and the roaring engine- he was going fast then. You'd have to shoot straight. You frown. Hopefully they wouldn't wreck the thing as it went in. Problem with Mu'awiya's men, aside from them wanting to kill you, was that they could never take anything slow. You REALLY didn't want to have to walk.

Then you hear a squall from the engine, and tires trying to find traction in dirt. They're braking in front of the entrance.

"Come out!" You hear shouted from beyond the wall. You stay silent, "Get out here, you coward! Come out!"

You keep your gun up. Stay ready. You should have counted on their bravado.

"Yeah, come out!" Another voice, a bit more nasally, "Easy to shoot at us far away, huh?"
"Camel fucking inbred!"
"Your father should have been burned for bringing you in to this world!"
Just wait.
"Come out and die quick, or we'll come get you, and you die slow!"
>>
You glance around the ksar- no, nobody's sneaking up on you. Just them trying to goad you out. Then you hear it. A third voice, quiet.
"Do you think he's still there?"
"Yaqub saw something glinting up there, before he-"
"Well maybe he left?"
"And if he didn't-"
"Shut up, we're going in! Keep that gun up, Ayyub!"

Finally. Your hear the engine rev beyond the wall, and then see the truck pushing in slowly. The driver is there, leaning over the wheel. His eyes are narrowed, as he glances to his left, then to his right. His eye catches yours. You squeeze the trigger.

One bullet. Two enemies.

The bullet through the temple bursts, coating the cab in blood. He falls on the accelerator, and the truck picks up speed, heading for the wall. The gunner is in view now, and his fellow in the back. The gunner is disciplined- he's still looking down the barrel, sweeping for targets. His comrade though, is panicking, and is leaping from the truck.

That shitty truck better not break.

He's shouting prayers to God as he leans off of his chair, and pulls the trigger. You go down flat, hugging your cheek against the fountain side. The sound rattles your teeth, and you wonder if God would be able to hear anyone over that din.

The stuttering roar continues, stone and tile, dirt and grass fly up with equal abandon as the machine gun roars on and on. A few shots fly over your position, making you wish you were smaller, making you wish your ankle didn't hurt so bad, making you wish quite a great deal. Then you hear a crash, shattering glass, a strangled cry- the gunfire ends abruptly.

You stay low. Wait for the ringing in your ears to fade. You listen. Eventually, you hear choking, sputtering, coughing. But you also heard a footsteps moving to the opposite side of the court.

The runner's taken cover. The opposite end. He'll have the area covered. Does he know where you are? Is the machine gunner dead?

You carefully peek up, over the edge- the truck looks okay. The grill is bent in, and thankfully the crash must have gotten the dead man's foot off of it. The DShK is skewed at an angle, pointing skyward. The gunner is crumpled in to the back window of the cab. Trying to pry himself free. His arm is at a funny angle. Was the DShK out of ammo? He was spraying it earlier. But, he was alive.

But you don't see the runner. You glance about, carefully doing your best to remain unnoticed. You see a rifle emerge from the far doorway, and duck down.

He's on the opposite side from you. You don't know if he saw you. You listen carefully, breathing.

That damn gunner, all he is saying, pleading, whining is for God to be good, God to be great, God have mercy. Your father taught you that silence was just as holy as prayer in a fight.

One bullet. Two enemies.

The AKM clatters from his fingers, as he brings his hands up to his shirt. Some sort of western thing. Arsenal? You can't figure it out. The bullet went right through his heart. He clasps his hands over it, descends to his knees.

You stagger up, leaning heavily on the rifle. Your foot hurts, and you wince. Your father's gun was good as a cane at least. You hobble over to the trick, the delirious gunner. He sees you coming, but can't do much about it. He's trying to work out a machete from his pant leg. Ah, now you recognize him underneath the glass and blood. The Sudanese. You remember him. Ayyub.

You stagger past him, as he takes a drained swing at you. You grab his wrist, twist the machete out, throw it away. It clatters somewhere in the grass. He chuckles wetly, gives you a nod. Well mannered. Or maybe it was just the head wound. He goes back to praying to God. You pull the DShK out of his reach, then go back to work. Let him finish his prayers.

You pull open the cab, haul out the corpses. God it reeks. You're going to hate driving this thing.

Ditch everything we can't easily offload onto the black market. Definitely keep the RPG, though. That could come in terribly handy. Go to Oran, though. We don't know if there are other people after us at the village, and we can get our ankle fixed up there - unless it's a break, rather than a sprain, in which case we need that fixed pronto.
>>
>>28508541
Can we make the Dragunov operational again? Also if we are leaving with the truck, why not taking everything, might be useful for bargain. What is in our bag?
>>
>>28508566
You're not trained in CQC.

>>

Fixing the jam is easy. But, it looks like it's been damaged due to shoddy maintenance. It might be a bit finicky (Read, jamming when hitting the range of 95-100).

>>28508591
Well, the black market will buy everything. But if you're heading in to Oran, there'll be security there, and they might require bribes. Any heavy hardware will make things worse.

Still, you have experience with these matters. If you can get your laptop online, you can set up a drop off before you hit civilized areas and make some money.

At any rate- to Oran?
>>
>>28508541
We should definitely take the CZ75.
I think we should take AKM or Dragunov

We have a pack to keep some ammo in, right?

Oh, sorry, missed the bag question.

Bag contains firearms maintenance kit, laptop, clothes, food and water to last you four days, flares, phone (broken), and cash. 9527 DA won't get you far- but it's better than being bankrupt.

Other than that, you're pretty sparse. You didn't have much time to plan when you were chased out.

take the stuff to Oran - all of it - we can sell it all there to whoever is buying stuff, or trade objects for favours/bribes, Better to get rid of stuff there, than to leave it behind and wish we'd brought it.

We disarmed him of that machete, he's at the least got a broken arm and a split scalp, and is unable to fight. Throw him a canteen of water, and wish him the grace of Allah, and that the prophet, peace be upon him guides him to safety.

And tell him if we ever see his face again, he will not be given such kindness. And if his allies try following us, they will get the same treatment as his friends lying in the dust. We want nothing to do with them.

(if he's rescued, and he passes that on, then Mu'awiya's men may well drop their guard, thinking that we are running, instead of planning to regroup and to then settle the score.)

You had been holding off on what to do with Ayyub, but the decision is made for you when you finish. He's very still when you next go to check him. No pulse in his neck either. He must have cut an artery? You drag him out, and set him down on the ground. It seemed almost sacrilegious to leave him, and the rest of the corpses laying about in a site of such hallowed history to rot among shell casings and bullet holes.

But you have survival to consider. You tear off an unbloodied shirt, and do your best to wipe down the cab, and the windows. The spider webbed wind shield would be a bitch, but oh well. Better than walking.

You pile everything you can find in to the back of the truck, flatten the DShK as best as you can (throwing away the ridiculous chair on the way), then pull a tarp over it, tamping it down best as you can with rocks so it wouldn't fly off. Any cop or militia member worth his salt would sense an easy income from a man driving alone with this much illegal gear, but what could you do? You could be certain that Oran would have its expenses as well.

The dragunov is interesting though. You wondered where the man got it- old model, poorly taken care of- but you like it. It'll be good. You were never one to go screaming in to combat, to go toe to toe. You preferred to strike from the shadows, from afar.

You clear the jam, set it in the copilot's seat.

Oran was ten hours away. And you know how Mu'awiya worked- these men would be expected back. They didn't even have any food (Aside from one blood sodden merguez beneath the seat), just some cola and a canteen of water. Meant to be a quick outing. They would get suspicious when they didn't return.

You forgot to check for cell phones. Cursing, you hobble out, check the corpses- amusingly, the driver, the first man you shot is the one with the phone. You pull it up, an old Nokia- no missed calls. You sigh relief, slip it in to your pocket, and head back for the car.
>>
You frown at the harsh copper scent, and the vaguely oily feeling of the wheel, but you put it from your mind. You pull out of the ksar, leaving ruins, bullet holes, and bodies behind.

You're lucky the radio works. You try to get an idea of the political situation, you don't want to risk getting caught stopping by a village to chat. Getting internet would be another question, but you'll leave that for now.

You skim the stations. Proclamations, announcements- this territory was strictly under the hold of the tribes, underneath Huffaz- but apparently, he'd been killed. A prerecorded message on the Berber radio solemnly proclaimed that Huffaz had 'cooperated with the oppressors, and for his misdeeds had been judged and executed. Our warriors, who seek to liberate all will brook no treachery. Algeria, arise! Fear no evil, for we shall stand beside you and fight for you. Wait for our coming, it is soon. Our way is true. Our courage will be seen by all!'

Another overly ambitious group, though it sounded more nationalist. You put it from your mind. The Berber announcer then stated meekly that the political situation continued to be shaped. Interesting.

Next, Constantine reported that Mu'awiya's men continued to clash with competing militias. ARC news's Omar bin Ghazali reported in his typical understated tone that Mu'awiya's men were fighting a losing battle, and only hoped that the fighting would end soon. No other militias were named yet. Nobody was on the rise then. Then, he mentions the words 'European intervention-' then, the radio fuzzes out.

You roll your eyes. Typical luck. You look ahead on the level sounds heading to the hills. This might explain it though. Flashing lights, armored vehicles. Checkpoint? Government forces? Tribesmen? Militia?

Definitely trouble though.

You kill the lights- the area is pretty rough, but there's not too many sudden ditches. You still take it slow just in case.

You reach in the back, and grab your laptop, turning it on. It is, as ever, agonizingly slow, but by the time it boots up, you wince at the battery left. Only about forty minutes.

The antenna on the thing is good though- you recall having to pay a hefty fee for it, but it serves well. You hope you'll be able to pick up something.

You hop out of the truck, and sneak forward, binoculars by your side, laptop cradled like a baby, and dragunov slung over your shoulder. You approach, quietly and carefully. Nothing, nothing, and nothing. You check your laptop each step you take, but it's not picking up anything. You're eventually close enough to see a man smoking and yelling at his friends sitting on a generator. US surplus vehicles it looks like. Just with a bunch of crap welded over it. They probably have some radio- but no wifi.

Waste of time. With a sigh, you snap the laptop shut, and head back for your truck. No alarms.

You make it to the foothills of the Atlas mountains without seeing anyone. Well, you do see some burning wrecks- some battles apparently were fought here, probably between the Berbers and the militias being pushed south. You manage to hit a paved road, and head north along it- by now, night has fallen, and you turn on your headlights.

You turn the radio back on. Nothing too interesting in the news. Apparently, the EU was giving an ultimatum to someone or another, and threatening intervention. You hoped they wouldn't send the French. Your father would spin in his grave.

There are some cars on the road, but not many. They drive past, uncaring of your bullet riddled and blood soaked truck.

if we can hide our identity, and change our appearance, I still say its safer, and better for our plan to get medical treatment on the ankle, and prepare for getting even with Mu'awiya.

if we cant pass in any way as a civvie, however, we're probably best to reroute, and look for aid elsewhere in Djelfa
>>
You bank right, head up the road to Djelfa.

As you go up in to the mountains, it gets colder and colder. Your ankle is killing you. You wish you'd packed a coat. Snow powders the road, and you slow down more. Here, traffic increases- you don't know which militia holds this place, but they seemed to be doing a good job. You glance up- from telephones and trees, bodies hang with bags over their heads, and signs hanging off their necks. You can only see them in glimpses from the corners of your eyes, ghosts shining in the dark and then passing behind you. You can't shake the momentary superstitious fear that an army of the dead was rallying behind you.

You wonder about their crimes. Mu'awiya hadn't come this far south, as far as you could recall. So, enemy of an enemy might protect you.

The cars slow down up ahead. No chance to avoid it this time, in the tight mountains. You bring yourself to a halt. A scrap built wall and gate, and a banner hanging above- two banners actually. Highly stylized words in gold on a black banner, 'Maliki's Peacekeepers,' and the banner below it a strange and abstract flag. Crescent, two swords, three knives? You shake your head. Maliki must be very friendly with them to share a pole like this. You remember Maliki actually. Former member of Mu'awiya's lot.

Right. There's red painted line ahead of you, barely visible through the snow, a good dozen meters from their check point. Six men with balaclavas and AKMs are in the road, and who knows who else in the dark. There's a truck parked by the gate, which has a anti air cannon set on the road, swept down it. The gate is heavy- they got the good scrap metal for this. At full speed, you doubt you could bash through- at least, not without totaling your truck. You feel a bit nervous.

A man holds up his fist, indicating for you to stop.

A great deal of hanging corpses. But they still had empty branches. No reason to give them an excuse.

You pull up to the line. Roll down the window. Keep your hands on the wheel in sight. Turn off the car- but leave the keys in the ignition.

The men in the road are relaxed, keeping their rifles cradled in front of them. Not much for them to do, with the four barreled gun on the truck behind them. The man that had held up his hand for you to stop nods satisfied. He turns, jerks his head to a man behind him, then walks forward. Nice, shiny, puffy coat. You envy him.

The two men walk up to your window. The first man, clearly the commander pulls the knit mask up and over his face to smile congenially. Close cropped beard, a squat nose and watery brown eyes. His teeth were all gnarled.

"Most cooperative. Thank you," He speaks with a strange accent. Arab? He casts an eye over your vehicle, "Anything to declare?"
"Cold," You bluntly state. The man laughs at you.
"Quite right, quite right," He looks about, "Why I wanted to take a mountain town. Fine skiing here."
"Is there?" You decide you don't like this man. He seems too friendly. The man behind him is a bit short. His eyes are at least honest though. He's looking at you with wholesome contempt and spite.

"Oh yes, oh yes," The man sighs, shaking his head, "Algeria. Vast and wonderful. I hope it recovers shortly. The people that live here are so hospitable. Beautiful country."
"Beautiful," You agree. You wished he would get to the point. The man looks about with a smile, as if to double check the assertion. Then he looks back to you.

"Some of Mu'awiya's tried to kill me in it. They died, I lived."

You don't turn your gaze from him. For some reason, saying that stopped your shivers. The man raises an eyebrow. He's the first to break your gaze.

"Hm," He looks back to his friend, chops twice with his right hand. The man nods, walks to the back of the truck. You notice two more men have peeled off from the checkpoint, and are approaching you. They haven't raised their guns, but they're keeping the triggers close at hand.

"Well then, that sounds like a story," The man interrupts with a smile, "So- you had a firefight then? I was going to be asking about the blood I smelled but, I suppose-"
"Are you going to let me through or not?" You state numbly. The Arab's smile withers, and he looks at you plainly.

"How about you get out of the car then. Keep your hands where I can see them."

The man is behind you, looking at the truck bed. These aren't Mu'awiya's men, but you can guess the thought process. You mean trouble. Or, a nice bounty. You mutely wonder if Mu'awiya buried the hatchet with Maliki.

The CZ75 is in your belt. The Arab couldn't see it from where he was sitting.

Six men though. And an anti aircraft gun.

Maliki was just an acquaintance. He was more of an intellectual sort, the kind of guy that could have made it as an Algerian officer, if he didn't have a trouble with authority. Actually studied in an American college before coming back home in scandal. His high mindedness and tendency to condescend brought him in to some friction with Mu'awiya pretty rapidly. However, he always spoke mysteriously of 'backers' he had, which made him confident through out everything. Possibly why Mu'awiya settled for running him out of town rather than killing him. His connections, technical expertise, and exceptional craving for power seems to have served him well though seeing as he apparently controls a town now.
>>
>>28510515
Even if its not needed to sway them, I suggest we give them the DShK as a gift. Its way too heavy for us to carry, its way too bulky. And that AA gun should be set up on a hill in case government jets or helicopters start attacking. the DShK is more than enough to take out any cars that approach the gateway.

More importantly, it puts them slightly in our debt, meaning we're more likely to be able to use Maliki's territory as a base of operations.
>>
>>28510570

Give the equipment to the guys that might need it, and might be thankful for it if something comes their way. A DShK is fearsome enough. And... well, we'll probably end up seeing the head honcho anyway. At that point, we can say we've been helping the security effort.
>>
>>28510915
I'd argue they're not dipshit. They probably know what's going on, seeing as we're in this situation in the first place. And a reliable gun is probably something you want pulling guard duty, not some two-bit guard with half-loyalties, especially if you're in the process of securing a foothold.

But, hey, majority rules.

"Did you not hear me? Get out of there."
"I am, damn it, I am," You move slowly bringing a hand down to pull your shirt over your gun- and pulling open the truck handle. You gingerly open it, and the Arab steps back carefully. His hands are on his gun now- he's pointing it to the ground. In a blink, he could bring it up. The Arab nods.

"Right, now, turn around, hands on the hood."
"Oh for the love of-" You roll your eyes, turning around, "I was told I would be expected."
"Oh, don't even try," The Arab snorts, he looks to the back, "Hamid! You find anything?"

Hamid gives a low whistle, "Indeed I did sir, indeed I did. This miboon has good stock."

You put on a exaggerated sigh, "This is why you always ask for payment first."
"Yeah?" You hear a holster snapping open, then feel something very cold at the base of your neck, "Shame someone isn't getting their gifts. Hold still," He starts patting you down. You nod.
"You got that. Maliki isn't a reliable business partner."
"Business partner?" The Arab barks a laugh, "What are you claiming, chimp? You think Maliki would want to see some ragged fuck like you?"
"No, no, not me. I'm just the runner this time. The guns are a bonus. The real prize is their info," You nod to the second banner. The man's ineffectual groping stops.

"...You can't be serious."
"Deadly," You hiss, drawing on your memories of Maliki's snide character. You do your best to ape his high handed tone, "Far be it from me to stop your highway robbery- I suspect that you've already got dreams of burning up my money on shisha and whores. Feel free. Enjoy your momentary paradise on Earth, before Maliki comes wondering why his friends have cut their ties to him."

The gun's pressure lessens, but you can still feel the cold steel there, "I...You can't be-"
"Now you're wondering if you can keep it secret," You let go of the hood, stand up straight slowly. He's removing his gun.
>>
"How much to keep six sets of eyes shut? Someone would talk, and then-"
"Please," The Arab is trying to sound congenial again, "I wasn't thinking of anything like that-"
"No?" You turn, stand up straight to look him down, "Then why the gun?"
"Please," The Arab shrugs laughing holstering the pistol, "You know how these things are, where-"
"I'm used to respect. Enough," You glance to the man at the back, Hamid. He's looking at you with curiosity looking at your gear, "Get him away from my truck."

The Arab jerks his head at Hamid. Hamid glances down, then walks over, "Hey, what-"
"He's one of Mohmar's!" The Arab hisses. Mohmar. You've heard that name before. Somewhere. You act irritated though.
"Nobody said his name, fool," The Arab looks at you.
"What? It's no secret, d-" You step forward.
"His name is not a commodity," You glance at Hamid, "You saw the DShK?" Hamid nods, "Take it. Put that ZPU somewhere it can actually be relevant."

The Arab puffs up, "Now listen-"
"I'm doing you a favor," You coldly look at him, "A reason that I'm late that does not end with you hanging from one of these trees," You glance at your nails, "I'll talk with Maliki about my fee later," You look at the gate, "Why isn't that gate up?"

The Arab's mouth works for a moment like a fish. His gun is forgotten in his hand- you guess Maliki did have backers, or at least had given the impression to his men. Giving the Arab mollified him, and served another purpose besides. While they were busy getting it set up and redeploying the AA, they wouldn't be checking your story. Trying to get his composure back, the Arab takes the path of least resistance. He nods to Hamid, "Go on then!" He points to the two men lingering by the gate, "He's clear! Get him moving!"

You give the Arab a look of annoyance, then return to your truck.

>>28511016
We hit up Maliki. He'll know we're here and the move we pulled within short order, and we don't want to be dicking about here when that happens.

If we're proactive about this and roll well, we can feasibly unload our guns, come away with a mission, and have a temporary place to resupply from.

If shit goes bad... Well, still better to be around Maliki. High value target, hostage taking, etc. etc.

He'll learn about this. Better to give an apology. He might like our gumption and cunning, to, so a job isn't out of reach.

Or he tries to kill us and almost certainly succeeds. Either way, fun quest.
>>
>>28511174

We also need to get that ankle looked at. Getting to Maliki and feeding him the intel on Mu'awiya should at the least feed his sense of importance and of being a player with contacts even if its not true. That should count for something.

While there we can get the ankle looked at, get a splint and the likes, and we can also trade the equipment. We can also get up to date intel on the routes, and possibly get contacts and work that'll be of value. We may be wise not to head toward Mu'awiya immediately, but to ensure we have a safe base of operations.
>>
>>28511208
We don't even have to kill the other guy. Apparently he is losing to another militia so all we have to do is wait.

I was just hoping to get to Oran.
>>
>>28511309
We don't even have to kill the other guy.
Until we find somebody willing to pay us for it.
>>
The moment you're through the gate, you allow yourself a small yelp of pain. You really didn't want to stand on your sprain, but you couldn't show pain to the checkpoint guards. After a few minutes wasted cursing, you decide that you can't just run to Oran right away. Not when you can get somebody to look at your foot. You THINK it's only sprained, but better to play it safe.

Of course, top of the agenda was to go to Maliki and make sure that he wouldn't be mad about your bamboozling the checkpoint guards. You grimace. Well, he'll respect your skills if nothing else. Not that you were necessarily fond of the idea of hanging around him very long. The man had an ego the size of Africa. You pull out in to town, making for the nicer parts. Rachim could wait.

Maliki, you knew, was a vain person that liked the finer things in life. Not that you could necessarily blame him. You certainly had your moments in Mu'awiya's militia not living up to proper religious strictures. A spartan lifestyle was something you tolerated, not embraced. A soft bed, a cup of wine, and warm company was something you desired.

Maliki, on the other hand, seemed to want to embrace the reputation that he was softened by the West. Sure enough, you find his place quickly enough- surrounded as it was by banners and guards and a high wall. Biggest place in town, perhaps it used to be a hotel, roaring with lights, and, you note as you disembark from your truck a block from it and walk forward, sounded like he was playing the beastie boys pretty loud.

You shiver as you limp along through the snow. The guards give you looks as they patrol, but leave it be. The truck would set them off surely.

Well. There's guards at the door. You can't just walk in, but-

A small, tinny musical tone from your pocket. The cell phone from earlier you got from the Mu'awiya militiaman. Shit, you'd forgotten.

>[ ] Answer phone.

"Five more men are dead because of the order to kill me. Send more, and they have the same fate. If Mu'awiya, and Mu'awiya alone wishes to speak to me, then he can call this telephone. Otherwise, I have nothing to do with you or your men."

Hang up immediately after. put the phone away then.

First, remember the number or write it down.

Then, answer and try to mimic one of the guy's voices. Maybe the nasally one. Claim to be the only survivor, but say the job got done. Also the truck is broken. Ask for someone to pick him up in a town or village in the opposite direction of where we went.

Actually, may be better to remember the number after the call so we don't miss it.

>Good food, but took way too long. Sorry about that. Leave phone seems to be in the lead.
You turn away from the guards for a moment to get out of sight range before checking the number.

You note it for the future. Now, for meeting Maliki. You approach the doors. An older man is standing by it, dressed traditionally save for the outline of a bullet proof vest, and a walkie talkie hanging from his shoulder, an old Walther MPK in his hands. He's looking at you with little worry. You glance back, and sure enough, you see there's a semi ruined tailor's shop behind you. Probably some snipers looking at you from up there.

Typical Maliki planning. Too clever by half. You nod to the guard, "I'd here to speak to Maliki."
"And you are?" The man rumbles.
"A problem solver," You look at the sniper nest in the reflection, "I served with him, in Mu'awiya's militia a year back. He'll know me."

The guard raises an eyebrow, then shrugs. He brings the walkie talkie up, "You heard that Maliki?"
"Yes," Crackles in response, "I did. Search him, then let him in."

No real point. Not like you were expecting a fight. You offer the CZ75 and the knife to the guard. He nods, taking them away, then passes a metal detector over you. Leaning on your good foot, you can't help but think he's taking his time on purpose. Finally, after enough time, he nods, putting his metal detector away, "You're lucky that Maliki will see you, you know," He chides you, rapping his fingers on the heavy wood door behind him, "He doesn't just see everyone."
"I'll cherish it," You're unsure if the sarcasm got through to him or not, as you slip through the door as soon as it opens.

The usual suspects look at you as you walk in. Maps cover the walls, guns and ammunition lay about everywhere, and the smell of cigarette smoke is heavy in the air. They murmur amongst each other in some amusement as you hobble in. Someone loudly comments that you smell like shit. Yeah, driving in a truck two guys died in probably didn't help. You ignore them, look for a man that looks important to ask directions. A fellow with an actual uniform points you up the stairs.

"You don't have elevator?"
"The elevator is reserved for now, sir. I'm very sorry," The man has a twinkle in his eye, and a grin tugging at the corner of his lips, "Do you perhaps want to come another day?"

Another petty power play. You roll your eyes, and take the steps. Fifth floor. Room 503.

A painful walk up the stairs, and you're in front of the door, facing another guard, who gives you yet another patdown that takes yet more of your time up. You bite back the irritation as he smugly nods, and pronounces you clean, knocks on the door, and waits for Maliki to imperiously pronounce you worthy of entering.

The door opens, and you hobble inside. There's Maliki, reclining on a lazy boy, bony face and bulbous belly, sunglasses, and a great big coat to keep him warm. A little ziggurat of pill bottles on the table next to him.

"Ah. Pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?"

Tell him the truth. We fucked up some dudes from a rival militia, are hoping to offload the weapons they had here in town - which should help him out nicely. He shouldn't want to block us or steal from us, since us leaving unscathed will be one more person who can spread the word that he's happy to accept arms; he seems smart enough to notice that.

Also admit we bamboozled our way past his guards, but left a heavy machine gun with them to make up for it. That should win us some points, or at least prevent retaliation.

So?

"Just business Maliki, a simple trade. I have a good opportunity for you," You take in the hotel room. Not quite a luxury pad, but it was a far sight better than most homes in Algeria. You hobble in, a kitchen to your left. A man was sitting by a stove top, eating cereal with milk, a pistol by the bowl in his hand. Cocoa puffs. As you walk forward in to the living room, seeking a chair to take the weight off of your ankle, Maliki raises his hand.
"That's close enough, friend. You're really quite rank," He chuckles, his flunkies joining in. Three of them so far you've seen, two by his side in the living room, and the man to your right in the kitchen, eating the cocoa puffs.

There would be more further within. You scratch under your eye. You're really hating this ankle.

"I'll try to keep this quick. You are, doubtless, aware of me and Mu'awiya's falling out?"
"Of course!" Maliki says with a smile, "Mu'awiya's offering fifty thousand in British pounds for your head. I imagine that's most of his savings. Quite a sum, quite a sum."
"Yes," That was quite a bit of money. Mu'awiya had to be emptying his savings for this. You wish, not for the first time, that you had never met his son. Your eyes flicker, assess his gunmen. If the guards comprehended the value of your head, they don't show any signs of greed or surprise, "But- I assume since you've let me come this far without a beating or a bullet that you see my political value first?"

Maliki grins, reaching for a pill bottle. He's relishing this. Just as he relishes every chance to display his power. You had a reputation, among Mu'awiya's men. As a problem solver, a good shot, and a professional. Maliki was clearly enamored of the prospect of drawing this out. But, these were the practiced steps of a haggle. Flattery and veiled begging.

"I wanted to hear your counter offer. Especially after you came through the front gate," He pops the child safety cap, "Fucking idiots only just now called to check."
>>
"I have weapons."
"I have my sources as well," A pair of orange something's go down Maliki's bird like neck.
"They'll be cheap."
"That it will," Maliki snaps his fingers. The man in the kitchen stands from his cereal, pops the fridge open, pulls out a soda. He pushes past you, brings it to Maliki's hand.
"All I ask is some consideration. We fought together, Maliki," You indicate your ankle, "Treatment for my wound, a place to rest a night, and just a bit of money. That is all."
"Hm, and if Mu'awiya comes after me, incensed that I sheltered a killer?"
"Mu'awiya is on his way out. Constantine is a battleground he is losing."
"I'm worried about the reputation," Maliki stands from his couch, trying his best to look saintly, "I'm here to bring peace. How would it look to shelter criminals?"

He was preparing to ask something. He waxed on, about the importance of his work, about his dreams for a united Algeria, a great deal of grandiose talk. You listen with half an ear, nodding and agreeing at the parts where you're expected. He'd finish soon.

"So- you understand my position," Maliki leans in, "I must not be a hypocrite, like all the others. Why should I help you?" He gets to the point, finally.
"Cheap guns," You try not to stray from the message. Maliki looks unimpressed.
"I'd rather have your arm."
"A job then?"

Maliki nods slightly. You're not a great fan of this. With a bit of agitation, "You can't just, give me a bit of money and let me be on my way?"
"You tricked my men at the front. Good job- it showed a hole, and you coming straight to me was the smartest thing you've ever done. Don't break your streak of wisdom now. The country is awash in guns. I've got three different arms dealers on speed dial. And I know where one is at the moment. One I need dealt with."

"I'll give you 80,000 Denar for your equipment," (Equivalent 1000USD), "A better car, and treatment for your ankle. Just do this job for me."

Where is he, what sort of a force does he have, what guards. Do you have information on his movements? And when do you want this done? If you want it in a day, I must decline. In a month, I can perhaps agree. You know, as well as I, that to rush into kill one man carelessly without prior preparation is suicide. a hundred extra rounds, a good workbench to strip it down, clean it completely, and ensure that its faultless, a few hours in a quiet valley practising, and as we do so, adjust the stock to fit us exactly and making sure that the sight is true and zeroed to a range we like to work at would be far better than just a few spare rounds. We need to be certain we can hit accurately, and can use the SVD. We may also be prudent to practice with a pistol. it was luck that got us through the firefight in the ksar after all.
>>
People thought it was so easy to kill people. Well, actually it is really quite simple. The trick was surviving the reprisal. You imagined an arms dealer would be very used to these sorts of shenanigans..

You try to keep the exasperation out of your voice, "Maliki, my dear friend,Your offer is quite generous but I would need to know-"
"Are you not going to do it?" Maliki points to the door, "All well and good then. Walk out of here. I'll keep your weapons."
"I did not say that, sir," You scratch the back of your head, "I need information is all. Who is this man? What territory does he lie in? Who protects him? What material and manpower does he have? What are his habits? Will he expect my coming? Can I ambush him somewhere else? Maliki, there are a great deal of variables in this."

Maliki snorts, "There are two. A target and a bullet. You need to figure out how to put the bullet in him."
"There are five men rotting in a ksar who thought the same thing of me, Maliki. If you can tell me nothing I will walk out of this room, and your town. You can keep my things. It would be better than committing suicide."
"Are you sure you'd walk away?" Maliki says with an edge. A hollow threat. He'd already allowed you in. An unarmed man, whose only crime was angering a fellow warlord. It would cost him face to slay a guest. Still, best not to remind him of it. You shrug.

"I would try."
>>
Maliki considers you. Frowns. Then laughs, "Of course I will tell you all about it! Please, my friend, do you think I would so quickly throw you to the lions? I will tell you everything, while you get that foot looked at. I'm sure you'll agree after you see the details."

No promises. You tip your head in thanks, as Maliki sets up a room in the hotel, and calls for a man called Al-Kindi to take a look at your ankle.

A sprain, not so bad. Some bed rest is his diagnosis. You take the opportunity to repair the dragunov (The poor thing had been terribly mistreated), get used to it, and grab ammo a plenty. Maliki supplies it all without so much as a peep of complaint. Suspicious.

Rachim proves elusive though. When you visit the address he had provided just three months past, the landlord of the building denies ever seeing him. He had been a mechanic, a skilled one, with some links that allowed him to move contraband.

Maliki's patience is not eternal though. He states flatly that at the end of three days, you had better be ready to move. Al-Kindi protests that your ankle would be better served with at least a month of bed rest, but Maliki states that you're tough enough not to let it be a problem.

After going through a hundred rounds with it, the CZ75 fits in your hand like an old friend. You go ahead and get a shoulder holster for it as well- you hated stuffing it in your belt like some kind of thug. After enough time adjusting its sights, you're ready and prepared.

>No penalties shooting with CZ75 at close range.
>3 Magazines, +1 in the chamber. 46 rounds.

Al-Kindi is a talkative one. From Pakistan, surprisingly. Apparently, he had an in on working the oil fields here. He was laid off in the first waves when the price of oil declined. His name was an assumed one- he had apparently admired the philosopher to such a degree, he decided to take it as a pseudonym. Despite talking your ear off, he always makes absolutely sure not to be overheard- perhaps he was running from something himself.

"Oh, it's probably El Puerco that Maliki has a problem with," You manage to stop him from reminiscing about his homeland to talk about something relevant. El Puerco, apparently, was a Spanish arms dealer- a relatively low level one. Mostly moving ammunition and small arms, with a specialty in mortars. Al-Kindi reports that Maliki had bitterly complained about the man- why, he's not sure. El Puerco generally had meetings in Timgad. A quick check online regarding El Puerco revealed some postings he'd made on a local forum, advertising on site and hazardous deliveries, via a pair of BDRM2s. Armored vehicles. You're unable to find out the armaments. Al-Kindi doesn't know much else, other than that Timgad was actually held by Sonatrach, the government company. You'd imagine El Puerco would be bleeding dry having to bribe the government to operate there. You note that he has a team from the Ukraine for security. Which is bad. Still, shouldn't be too large. He had to leave the Timgad ruins some time, and he would be an idiot, or very wealthy to use one of his shiny toys to drive in to town to pick up groceries. Either that, or he has people deliver for him.
>>
Your ranging in the town of Djelfa reveals plenty of places to hide your equipment. A town of four hundred thousand had many crannies. You find an abandoned warehouse at the edge of the city and stow your gear there. It also served to provide a straight shot through wilderness out of the town. Would require some risky driving, but a wreck was better than getting gunned down.

Maliki's backers are at the top of everyone's interests. The foreign fighters that came to Maliki's aid are believed to be linked- Egyptians, Iraqis, Arabs. Al-Kindi admits that his being Pakistani gave him an advantage- the native people of the town give the foreign fighters a wide berth. as of yet, nothing besides tensions have come of the presence from the foreigners. Most of the rumors seem to agree though, that it's doubtful that Maliki's support comes from the West. Westerners generally give better equipment.

Maliki's foremost enemies are the Berber tribesmen to the south. Huffaz's brother had been slain by Maliki personally on coming to the town, and Huffaz had declared that Maliki would die before the year is out. Huffaz is now dead, and Maliki still lives. Maliki gives muddling statements of moral support Toufik's successors in the Algerian government, but no material support. Even that is rare these days, so government forces will ignore Maliki's militia, and anyone going under his banner. Good to note. Mu'awiya's men loathe Maliki's, but they have their hands full. Still, from time to time, Djelfa comes under mortar attack.

Rachim, apparently, was considered Maliki's left hand man, up until two days ago, when he suddenly disappeared, and Maliki put a bounty on his head. 160,000 denar.

You investigate Rachim's shop. Tools, material, not much else. The place has been mostly untouched, actually. You find old blood, bullet holes, smashed equipment. But, underneath a knocked over welder, a hastily ruined laptop manages to provide a hard drive for you to recover. He failed to magnetize it. You might be able to find an expert to recover the data from it later. You do know for sure that he's not going to be in Djelfa any more. Rachim had apparently made an enemy of Maliki's somehow. He was still alive- otherwise, Maliki wouldn't have the bounty still up.

You manage to find a small cache. Some American dollars, a bag with a Makarov and silencer, and a business card. 'Sonatrach - Dirim ibn Mufar.' A number is hand written on it as well. The makarov only has the one magazine, 10 rounds. You didn't peg Rachim for the cloak and dagger type. Especially since he had been tortured by the regime years back. Your father had said that any love of country or politics had died in the man then. Made him honest.

Nothing else is in the shop. You leave it.

When your free time is up, you meet Maliki at his hotel.

"How's the foot?"
It still hurts, but you can move at faster than a hobble, "It won't bother me."
"Told Al-Kindi you'd be fine. Right, so, job details- there is a man who is arming my enemies."
"The Berbers?"
"Just so. El Puerco is his name- a loathsome, fat man. Wears sunglasses all the time, even in the heart of winter. Thinks just because he has a bit of armor he can do whatever he likes. He sells to my enemies, then has the gall to come to me and try to sell to me? When I pointed out his hypocrisy, he laughs at me, asks why I make such a fuss? Asks if I see how effective they are, why not get in on the action? I refuse, kick him out. Next day, Berbers hits every checkpoint he passes through, kills twenty of my men!"
"So this is about pride?" You raise an eyebrow, waiting to see how he takes it. Maliki surprises you, nods.
"Yes! Pride! Revenge for lives lost! The Berbers, I kill them eventually. El Puerco, he will be trouble for me. But he is small time- my men, they are not quiet enough for this job. But you could do it."
"And where will he be?"
"He'll be in Timgad. The old Roman ruin."
"Sonatrach holds that place."
"So?"
"They work for the government. If things go wrong-"
"Things won't go wrong. I know you."
"I don't suppose you scouted it out?"
"Of course!" Maliki snaps his fingers, and a thumb stick is brought to you by one of his flunkies, "Pictures. Pictures of the whole of his camp. It's easy. One bullet won't bring government helicopters. And I'll send my best man with you, to work as a spotter. It will be simple, my friend."

Easy for him to say.

We still have the type 69 RPG. Make sure we take that with us, and at least 3 type III HEAT rounds, plus preferably at least one HE anti-personnel grenade too.

Also, go shopping. We need binoculars or a spotting scope, and some sort of comoflage netting to cover ourselves with while we do spotting on the target.

Okay, I'll make sure to say that in the future. Thank you for being patient.

You've got binoculars, thankfully (I should probably make an inventory pastebin come to think of it. Sorry.) and the camouflage you can nab pretty easily, considering how much they've got laying around. You currently have 3 high explosive anti personnel grenades. Getting HEAT rounds will cost you some, but you know a guy that has some. A steal at just 8000 denars for two.

There's something fishy about the deal.

pack, get to the supplied truck, get ready. take our time about it, travel in the morning. Make sure we've got supplies and plenty of water. Also, make sure we've got civillian clothes and gear, we need to look like we're not part of a militia.

if we can, we need access to a workshop, and to weld up a sump guard and propshaft guard box on the truck to protect it from offroad travel.
A propshaft guard box that just so happens to be the right size to slip an SVD and a type 69 into, so they're well hidden in case of government checkpoints. We need spare fuel too.

leave the makarov in our stash.

You scratch the back of your head. Lot of unknowns.
"This will have a picture of my target?" You ask, raising the thumb drive. Maliki laughs.
"He'll be the biggest thing there!"
"And after this, 80,000 denar, a truck, and time enough for my ankle to heal?"
"Of course!" Maliki says with a smile. He already knows you'll take the job. Not much else you can do. You roll the thumb drive in your fingers, nod.

"Okay. I'll meet your man. Take him along. But if I want him out of my way, he better stay out of it. Clear?"
"Don't worry. He knows your reputation. His name is Umair he'll be waiting the Ford F150 outside of the northern checkpoint. He knows the way to Timgad."

You visit your concealed stash, taking a look around. People around here know better than to ask questions. Some part of you is irritated that the people in town duck and look away when they see you coming. Think you're just another of Maliki's militia. You spin the suppressor off of the Makarov, throw the gun in, pocket it. Collect the Dragunov- you'd been grabbing ammo the entire time. Only one magazine of proper sniper ammo though- 7N14. You'd been lucky to grab that. Worth their weight in gold. Two magazines standard armor piercing, one magazine tracer, and another magazine of plan humdrum 7.62×54mmR.

60 rounds total. More than enough.

You pack it away in the jacket Maliki gave you. An old bomber jacket, button down shirt, blue jeans, and steel toe boots. You didn't look like trouble, but uniforms were rare enough these days, so that didn't mean much. CZ75 in the shoulder holster, suppressor in the pocket.

>[ ] Grab the RPG. Don't know what you'll see.
>[ ] Leave the RPG. Too heavy, too much attention.
>[ ] Any other shopping?

Umair is prompt. By the time you're finished, he arrives quickly, starts taking you to Timgad. You have five hours to get to know him on the drive. He handles checkpoints well, but he's skittish. At the first sign of trouble, overreacts.

He can't come, you resolve.
>>
>>28529493
standard 7.62x52R rounds for the SVD are steel-core penetrators.
As long as we have proper SVD ammunition instead of plain standard AKM spec ammo, that stuff will serve as well as any handloaded round.

The main problem is if he's wearing really heavy ballistic plate, we might well have to move closer, to within 200m to ensure penetration.

either way, we better travel, and see what the aly of the land is.

Swap the F150 for a Hilux. Only thing that would stand out worse would be a Hummer.

>Leaving the RPG
>And yeah- the F150 is rare outside of America for good reason. But, I wanted to get across Maliki's softness. Which is probably unrealistic. But anyway, good thing you caught that.

The F150 of course would cause trouble. Maliki wasn't one to think. He had a combination of a western lifestyle he inherited from his time abroad, and a poor man's desire to show up his neighbor. After a lecture to Umair, he begrudgingly takes away the truck, and finds one more suitable to the task. Far less conspicuous. He still navigates the checkpoints with aplomb though.

You arrive at the outskirts of Timgad just as the sun is setting. The boy offers that this is good for your mission. You lack a night sight on your scope however, which makes things troubling.

Timgad was relatively safe. The archaeological importance of the place made it important in western eyes, more important than the state of civil war in the whole of Algeria. If the culture of an old Roman landmark were to be erased in the fighting, Algerian sovereignty would be a secondary concern to the weight of history.

Umair takes you up on a slope overlooking Timgad itself. Sonatrach's logo appears more and more often as you drive. No Algerian soldiers, but there are some police in little compounds, trying their best to not need

"There!" Umair had borrowed your binoculars to scan the ruin, "In the old theater."

He passes the binoculars to you. You take them- more of a formality really. An old theater. El Puerco had to have a good in with Sonatrach then. The place is lit up like a Christmas tree, flood lights surrounding it. You catch sight of them, men with AK74s walking in lazy patrols around the theater. Modern equipment and sensibility.

The theater, regrettably, was facing away from the hill. You guessed that they'd be inside, the BDRM2s covering the entrance.

The highest thing on the other side was Trajan's arch. Risky climb.

"How do the Berbers buy things from him?"
>>
You contemplate, scanning the area. You see an SUV parked further away, at the edge of the light. A pair of mercenaries cover it, one on an RPD.
"The police station there," Umair points to the edge of the ruin. A tourist office sandbagged and reinforced. Taken over by police then, "The man there acts as El Puerco's secretary. Takes calls, arranges appointments. Quite modern."

A winding trail comes from behind the tourist office, heading for the theater.
"Any other ways and-"
"Shot on sight," Umair nods, "Last time we tried it, that happened."
"Last time?"
"Yes."

Umair does not talk further about that. You also learn on the opposite side of Timgad, that there was a Sonatrach office, guarded by their private security forces, not to mention no height. El Puerco understood geography.

You contemplate the theater. El Puerco had to get creature comforts from somewhere. You'd have to keep watch. Umair though, is overly excited.
"So- who taught you to shoot?"
"My father. I worked as a shepherd," The mercenaries break up patrol patterns. And you note, have a nice tent in the shade of what might have once been a forum. Good size tent. At least fourteen men. Probably more in the theater to intimidate customers.
"A shepherd?"
"Had to keep the jackals from our herd," You put away the binoculars, irritated at the young man's curiousity, "Umair-"

its a risky climb, but the arch is possibly our best option.

however, I'd prefer we scout to the south, to the Capitol. the building is high enough that we can get a clear shot into the theatre, and its on the outskirts of the roads, meaning that it'll be harder for anyone responding to get there before we've bugged out.

hence why the The Capitoline Temple is a far better option if we can.

steps leading up to it from the back, clean route out as its on the edge of Timgad. Clear Line of sight right into the Theatre, but no clear route between them making travel harder.

combined, its the best position to make our observations from, and as its not as obvious a sniping position as the Arch, I'm thinking we then set a diversion up there to draw responders towards the arch, to allow our escape.

"Umair- wait," You bring up your binoculars. Against the setting of the sun, there's another structure, almost directly south of the theater, "The temple."
"Old roman temple?" Umair echoes. Umair isn't a helpful person. You shake your head.
"Umair, move the truck around to the opposite side of the temple. Stay out of sight," You leave the binoculars hanging from your neck, pull out the CZ, screw the silencer on, "Southwest of it."
"Eh, that would be," You jab your hand over, point at a mostly unfilled area, "Ah! Yes, yes sir. You're going now?"

You grab the dragunov, start heading down, "Yes. Less time we're here the better. Move!"

You don't wait for Umair to respond. You scrabble down in the ruins, head deeper in to the dark of Timgad.

Fourteen mercenaries. They'd doubtless be wearing body armor. Better to avoid them entirely. You've gotten skilled with your CZ, but you're far from bulletproof. You avoid the flood lights- the area around the theater is very well illuminated, so you stay as far away as you can while staying in cover.

In the shadow of a collapsed ruin, you halt at the corner and peer around. A road to cross, barely illuminated by the edge of a flood light. Two men stand at the end, speaking with raised voices. A rough language you can't understand. There's a cargo truck coming through, heading down the road. Going the same direction you're going.

You wonder what they have inside of that...

agreed. if we have to silence guards, its our only option...

Ok, here's a map.

I suggest we come in from the south, to the capitoline temple. escape route offroad over the Bou Ahmar hills to the south west, which will then link us up to the N87, which loops around them. There are multiple wadi which cut through the hills which will be safe to drive up, and which cross a number of unpaved roads which will easily serve to lead us to the N87 and our getaway.

We infiltrate (Green) by driving through the town, and then up the riverbed/wadi. we then infiltrate by foor the remaining 200-250 m (blue) along the pathways, leading to the temple. in position at the temple, we watch, wait, then take the shot (red). We immediately extract by the same route we entered by, as we know the route having entered it slowly. the 200-250m are lower down than the temple, meaning we have cover the entire route, untill marksmen are on the temple itself. by that point we are already in the hilux.
the hilus has been turned in preparation, and we extract (yellow) along the wadi, turn left up the other branch, and then over the land towards the scrub which will serve as further cover, from where we will be out of range of fire, and can extract over to the N87

If we are left by our driver, we ditch the rifle, and escape on foot down the wadi into timgad, and we find somewhere to hole up, and plan our escape.

we're here to kill one man, not a dozen. and each shot risks attention.

We stick to the objective. kill El Puerco, extract. If we're not chased, then we can think about what we might grab - but that is not our objective.
Remember, the SVD is unsuppressed, and more than one shot will be able to get a fix on our position. one bullet, one kill, and we're away from there.

if a kill's worth planning, its worth planning well.

I also checked the ranges against the optimal targetting range for the SDV (range from temple to theatre 250m, distance from temple to wadi, the same. means we have the time to escape before they're in a position to fire back. I expect to jump in the back of the hilux and it to roll out, meaning I'm in a position to fire back if any shots do come our way, without the outgoing fire blinding our driver's night vision - meaning we dont need to use lights, making it harder for them to spot us. Also, its why I specified a Hilux with a sump-guard. I expected to use the wadis for escape...

Also, note that the wadis offer at least 4-5 escape routes, leading up the hills, down into the town, accross to the main road, and further along the wadi will reach the N88 after about 3 miles, which leads in either direction away east-west. that should severely minimise the ability of security to chase us, as they will be forced to split up if they dont know which route we're taking. Furthermore, the route I'm suggesting, over the hills and unpaved roads toward Oued Taga, and then the Route National N31 is a pretty tricky route, making it a less-palatable course of action. Hopefully, they'll think we'll take the route to the N88 and a fast escape.

Also note that the 4x scope on an SDV is optimal to 600m, so we are in a position to get away to the cover in the SW and from there open up with normal rounds, and to suppress any response that does try to follow us before they're unable to return fire of their own.

And yes, you use RL locations, I will pull the map data, research the best route in, check the topography, and work out the best way to nail the target...

he cant off us till we confirm we did the job, hence we jump into the back pickup of the truck, not the cab. that prevents him asking the question, till we're out of danger. at that point, we've got the pistol prepared, and we can kill him if we feel he's a risk.
I am inclined to avoid killing him. doing so will ensure we are hunted by not one, but two militia warlords. Returning to Djelfa in a way will reinforce our reputation as someone who is capable of dangerous jobs, and who is'nt going to betray their side. And that is worth a lot more than the bounty on our head from Mu'awiya.

Well, it's sound.

So- taking that route, you handily avoid most of the guards. Umair understands his role in this mess, so he stays out of the way. He promises to be there to pick you up when you need to bail out.

There are some men watching the capitol- but they seem loathe to get out of the light.

Anyway, the little crappy Xs are men you see. They're not immobile, they're patrolling, barring the ones by the tent in the theater.

The tent is huge- you think you see a damn air conditioner on it. One of those kinds of tents that rich guys like to buy so their pilgrimage to Mecca is as comfortable as possible. You can't see anyone inside. He has to come out eventually though.

The Berbers are waiting in what was once the forum. You're not sure how they'll react. They don't look to have any heavy gear, no armored vehicles at the least. There's about twenty of them milling around. They seem to be waiting for trucks to come in the center of them.

One 14.5mm machine gun equipped BRDM, and another Konkurs variant- AT missile on top of it. El Puerco wanted to be ready for anything it seemed. The machine gun equipped is nearer to his tent. They also both have jury rigged spotlights at the ready.

You have to be quiet and careful. You get spotted, you doubt their love for history will keep them from making you in to a greasy stain. There's a half moon out tonight, so it's not completely dark.

You just have to wait for the man to show his face. And hope Umair won't leave you in the lurch.

>[ ] Wait for El Puerco to show.
>[ ] Hm. Maybe we should do something different...

>Also- next time, I'm going to make damn sure I'm ready. Sorry about this.
>>
>>28531400
>>[x] Wait for El Puerco to show.
And now we do what all good snipers do. Wait.
>>
>>28531400

It seems to come from the grid, you seem some generators, but none of them are on. You catch a few glimpse of power cables from the tent in the theater heading north, in the direction of the taken over tourist office. You might be able to scout around to find the power source, but that'd involve risking guard attention.

Still. Those generators look like they're there for back up, but no one's paying much mind to them. Ten minutes of darkness could be very valuable.

In the meantime, waiting, watching, loading 7N14. Writing.
>>
>>28531442
>[X] Wait for El Puerco to show.

We wait. patiently.

we do not blow the lights. Out here, static, covered over we're just another peice of rubble in the roman ruins, while the guards have shot their own night vision by setting up floodlights.

We can see in, they cant see out. any patrolling guards that arent following a clear path, we can ignore until such a time as they're about to stand on top of us. If we're silent and still, they wont notice till its too late, and we've put a round through their head. At that point we have 60 seconds to ascertain a target and down it, or we get the body, and we drag it away with us and bug out, the mission bust.
>>
>>28531541
>We wait. patiently.
This needs to be echoed.

Does anyone else get the feeling that a deal is about to go down? That seems like it would be a much better distraction. Blow the lights now, and everyone is on edge.

If we wait until both parties are present and fire the shot, they'll be more likely to blame each other than run off into the darkness looking for a hidden sniper. Would also probably look better in the after action report.
>>
>>28531601
Oohh good call maybe.
>>
>>28531601
Agreed.
>>
incidentally, at 250m, an SVD with milspec ammunition, we can expect an accuracy of within 1.25 inches of our recticle point. we are way, way inside our engagement range ( optimal range is 600m, maximum range is about 1,600m) so we dont even need to account for bullet drop at this range. we can very, very likely put a round right through the target's sunglasses, and as long as we're actually aiming at them, even a miss of our target point will still hit thier head. a round through the chest is virtually 100% certain at this range.

Also, I just checked, the SVD has a built-in flash supressor. they'll hear the shot, but even if they're looking right at our location, there will be no muzzle flash. and in the theatre, the sound will bounce around so much, it may be extremely difficult for those guards to work out what direction it even came from, yet alone the exact location.
>>
>>28531688
>no muzzle flash
Oh, that's just beautiful. Hook, line, and sinker.
>>
>>28531601
Thirded.

lets wait and see what happens.

Pull the bomber jacket around us, keep our hands warm, and keep as quiet and as still as we can.
>>
You like this SVD. Your old father's gun, while bearing a great deal of history couldn't compare. The stock for one wasn't split. You could return your father's gun to his grave. You drape the cloak over yourself, settle behind the gun, and watch.

The tent is heavy and canvas, painted with desert camo. The floodlights don't help it. You guess that it helps intimidate customers, helps the guards to see possible bombers and pick out targets within the radius. Made them blind though. The guards glance around, hands resting. Professional, but used to urban environments where men were closed in, where the greatest fears were confusion and controlling directions troubles came in from. Not here. Here, distance was king.

Distance, and time. Patience. You hoped Umair was patient.

It's another hour before something happens. The sun has set entirely, the tent burns your eye to look at. He must be talking with them inside, perhaps. You scan over to the forum. You can't see much, but the Berbers are gathering there. Far from their tents and far from the Sahara. You don't know how many, but you've seen four trucks come in, heavy cargo trucks.

You wait. It's cold. You wish you had a sweater. You don't want a shiver messing up the shot. You keep your hands warm, wait and watch.
>>
Then, noise. The Konkurs BDRM is moving. You follow it as it goes to the Berber forum, then it starts coming back, leading a cargo truck to the tent. You hope El Puerco will come out, welcome the guests. But no. The truck stops, and the tent flap opens. Big man, wearing a ballistic mask and a big shiny revolver in his fist. Show off. He waves that gun around like a maestro at the orchestra, pointing with it to direct the confused driver out. goes for the back. Looks inside. Pushes someone out. A woman. She staggers on the ground, but two mercenaries whisk her up, away to the tent.

Not the material you were expecting.

You wait more. Ten minutes pass, a man is dragged from the truck, in to the tent. Then another two minutes after. Then, silence.

Umair better be waiting.

Eventually though, it pays off. Another twenty minutes later. The big mask man comes out, holding open the tent flap. A man with bad teeth split in an unwholesome smile wearing a kalpak comes out, jabbering and gesturing. He's holding on to a fine attache case. Then El Puerco comes out. Patchy goatee. Sunglasses. Heavy body armor. Thinning hair. An unhappy look. Sweat shining.

Right in your sights. All you have to do is squeeze.

Berbers. If there's a meeting, and we can get both sides, we do. Because Maliki will love that news, and it will be worth more than any bounty he's contemplated collecting.

But El Puerco is the first shot, the berbers we can nail if they're in the open. an SVD is self-loading, we can empty the magazine in well under 5 seconds if we need to. But ideally, we make no more than three shots - more than that will make it far easier for the guards to work out where we are. and we're so close, we cant risk more than that.

You won't get a shot like this again. He's walking for the truck- he turns to speak to the big man behind him. Dead on to you. The bullet fires. You have no doubt that it'll hit and kill him, but still you watch the scene.

His neck mid twist snaps hard to the right. Shards of glass go flying as your bullet hits him right at the border of the bottom of his left eye and his cheek. Blood sprays from behind as he flops down. The big man in the ballistic mask runs forward, going for the body. The man in the kalpak sprints for the truck, shouting.

Tumult. You hear gunfire pick up almost simultaneously at the forum.

we drop the spot, because the BRDM can advance up the road, and has an HMG that could fuck our hilux at range, and light it up.

we do not blow the floodlight, because that's wrecking their night vision, and anyone in that area trying to shoot outwards is blind. anyone leaving that area is likely to trip, twist ankles, fall over, or otherwise be slowed down for at least 60 seconds till their night vision gets accustomed to the dark - essential time for us to escape, while the BRDM is neutralised.

You quickly shift aim to the BDRM. The spotlight hanging off of it was a poor job. Another crack, and it shatters, the light going off.

Then everyone is getting to cover, shouting. The old Berber is getting in the truck and driving. One of the guards fires a burst off, before the big man slaps it to the side, shouting. He's trying to drag El Puerco back to the tent, but you see the gray matter. He's gone. At least it was quick.

That's the last you see before you're up, and sprinting away, rifle slung over your shoulder. The crackle of gunfire behind you.

You clear the temple, spot lights flashing about after you. The Berbers and El Puerco's men were having it out, but you hear the squealing of tires. You REALLY wish your ankle didn't hurt this bad. You end up having to slow down, and hop on one foot for a bit. In the dark, that's a bad move, and you ignore your tearing tendons and run on in the dark until you see the off white hilux again.

Umair is parked further up than you remember. A good fifty meters from where you separated. And the wrong way. You curse as you sprint in closer. Then you see the bullet holes, and the blood on the windshield.

Son of a bitch. You hadn't heard anything. You draw your pistol. You know it can't be true, but you think you can hear a helicopter.

Now, do we go for devious bastard tactics, people?

We get into the hilux back, we yell for Umair to floor it. We then call that we've neutralised them they're all heading for the main exit from the roman area, its safe to drive with lights up the wadi... but - we then jump out the back, and let our nicely lit up hilux, and Umair in it to be hosed down with lead from the OTHER BRDM which will probably have been started up by that time, and which will have an HMG ready to open up....?

ditch the truck. drop into the wadi on foot going the other direction from the truck's position, heading south-south west, move up slowly and quietly, keeping in cover in the wadi. Keep hold of the SVD. if they have a gunship with thermal imaging, we'd have been shot down while waiting on the temple. so we just need to move slow, and quiet, and to climb up the wadi into the scrubland, making sure we're not a clear target.

If he WAS supposed to kill us, sends a powerful message to Maliki. If he WASN'T, sends a powerful message to the whole militia.

You keep your CZ up and ahead of you as you approach. A sudden thought occurs to you that you'll have to get a flash light some time. In the light of the half moon you can see some things.

There's an outline of a person laying in the driver's seat. He's leaning against the window. The bullet holes are in a tight clump. Professionals then.

You creep forward silently. The body stirs. Not dead yet then. It's probably Umair. But you still settle the sights on his head as you move forward.

You hear his voice, thin, weak.
"Help."

You keep your gun up as you approach. The grill is dented, blood covers it and the hood. And underneath the truck you see a pair of legs. You look under. Dark clothing. Balaclava. Combat webbing. Mangled limbs, head caught in the undercarriage. Well, at least Umair isn't dying alone.

"Help. Please."

You shake your head, focus on the living, go to the driver's side door, and pull it open, gingerly keeping Umair upright.

"What happened?"
"I wait," Umair's eyes are unfocused. A tight clump of bullets in his chest. He's not long for this world, "Waited long. Tired. Heard something," His eyes flicker up, "Man at the window. Held a gun up to the window."

You glance at the door. Blood, and a dent. You can guess what happened. Umair shivers.

"Drove out. Hit him. Drove for you. Shot a lot-" He swallows, "Quiet shots. I, I don't think I can drive."

He certainly can't. You keep your eyes out. He's not that far from where he was. But where are these mysterious men? Would you be safer in the truck, or outside of it?

And now you're certain. You do hear a helicopter. Going away.

But you also hear a running gun battle come your way. A glance back, and you can see tracer fire flashing over the sky.

We know with reasonable certainty that Umair wasn't there to kill us. Getting him back when he is in critical condition will reflect well on us, especially to Maliki, concerned as he is with image and ego.
If we save him, he will also be indebted to us, and on the ride back he may be able to share some useful information. "Stop talking Umair," You carefully slide him over. Umair winces, but doesn't yell. You hope he's beyond pain, "Is there a first aid kit?"

Umair looks at the glove box. You pop it open, pull out the green bag, and unzip it open. Bloody gauze, some scissors, cotton balls, and an empty bottle of aspirin greet you. You curse, and drop it.
"Yeah," You hear Umair say. You don't have time.

You pull back, look down at the man beneath the truck. You glance around. You can give yourself forty seconds. Forty seconds to try to pry him out.

You tug at his legs. Good boots actually. Shame they're so big. Somehow this morning, you hoped you wouldn't be trying to tug a dead man out from under a truck.
"Hey...What are you-"
"Save your strength, Umair," You tersely remind him, yanking on the dead man. Finally, there's a clunk, and a wet noise of a head going in the sand. You try to keep the image out of your head as you drag him out to the bed of the truck, and sling him in.

Professional uniform. A cop, maybe? Or one of the Algerian army? Quiet shots. The magazines in his webbing were slim, slightly curved. You don't have the time to search him quite yet. You pull the tarp over the body.

You slide back in to the truck. Second truck baptized by blood you've sat in this week. Umair has his eyes closed, leaning against the window. Breath comes ragged and short. No shots in the heart. But you're sure he has a lung punctured. You sigh, get the truck revved and ready, and drive hard.

The berbers make a fine distraction. You head the opposite way from them, drive hard for N87. Umair moans at every jump and jostle. A helicopter passes by- but it's heading south, following the Berbers.

You switch on the radio, scan the stations. No mention of this misadventure. Umair wasn't important to Maliki. But he'd make a good pawn to use against you, if Maliki felt like making your life uncomfortable.

It's five hours back to Djelfa.

Call Maliki. Tell him the op's been completed, but Umair's been shot. We need a doctor on the way back, somewhere close, ideally. It will show we're actively trying to keep Umair alive, show we completed the job, and make him out to be an asshole if he refuses to help us or tries to turn on us later.

He might not make it to a doctor, but we can sure as hell try.

Find a doctor - not here. drive 10 miles SE to Batna - there's a decent size clinic there.

at the least, we drop him off there, we have no chance of him coming along with us.

We can claim he was shot on the edge of town, if we're questioned, and we've rushed him here.

Oddly, there's no records of Mi-4's being lost in afghanistan during the soviet invasion - it had been replaced by Mi-8's by then.

You haul a left on N88, cutting a car off. You put the honking out of your mind as you drive hard.
"Umair!" You glance out of the corner of your eye. His eyelids flicker, "Stay awake! Where's your phone?" He wordlessly taps on his breast pocket.

You reach in to Umair's pocket, wrench his phone out, and look through the contacts. Maliki. You dial, put it up to your ear.

Rings. Rings. Rings. Nothing. No response. You curse. Try another contact, Skal. Rings to voice mail. Another muttered curse. You go down the list, trying to find someone still awake and willing to answer. Finally, someone picks up.

"you better have a good reason-" You hear grumbled loud and phlegmy.
"I have a very good reason! Umair has been shot!"
"Wha-"
"We're going down N88," You glance around, try to see any landmarks and give up, "Just leaving Timgad-"
"Wait, wait, slow down-"
"If you can't help me, find someone that can! Go get Maliki, tell him to call Umair's phone immediately!"
"I- well, I'll try-" You hear a noise of a squeaking bed, and confused sleepy questions, "God be good, is he alright?"

Sitting in a puddle of Umair's blood, you think to yourself that you've rarely heard of people alright at being shot. You do your best to focus on the road.

"Enough! I'm going to Banat. If you can't find some place closer, go get Maliki and ask him for help! Immediately!"
"I'm going! I'm going!"

You wait on the line, driving down N88.

How do you get out of Algeria, you wonder. Oran seemed so far away. And there was a checkpoint, between you and Banat. Did they have your description? How were you going to explain the corpse back there? You shake your head.

By the time Maliki gets on the line, Umair has stopped breathing. It took twenty minutes.
"Hello?" Maliki doesn't sound happy.
"The mission was a success," You report.
"Yes, yes, I heard that already. Do you know the hour?"

You bite back your fury.

Sorry, I write too slow. It's basically the end anyway. Everything past this point is basically a formality here. Our main character is safe. I'll pick it up again probably Saturday. I can do it from home which'll be comfy.

Though- I do have a slight debate in my head. I had a different idea of things initially, but no plan survives contact with reality. Basically how 'real' do you guys want to get? Obviously I adore tacticool type stuff, and I was blown away at somebody pulling up a map and plan based on the name of a place and my shitty description. I hope that that will happen in the future, and in the future, I'll try to muster more on my end to match that.

But the politics are very different. I severely doubt an Algerian, or really anyone familiar with North African culture would read my thread and think it had any degree of verisimilitude. I was thinking of taking this to a somewhat, frankly, wacky place to hide from that. Well, not too cartoon wacky. Just something pretty far from reality and more in the realm of bargain bin thrillers.

But... I'm getting the feeling that you the players might not be in to that and might enjoy it if I took this a bit more seriously. Things for me to think about.

tl;dr A whole lotta words that mean nothing.

>>28533807

Actually, I gotta get going now crap. Sorry to cut off somewhat. Pick up again on the road on Saturday. Make that 11:00 4chan time since I want to sleep in a little.

>>
>>28533734

Umairs dead... Alright well screw it then. My vote is we pull off the side of the road and check out our other corpse. We're not getting through that checkpoint as we don't really have anything on us for bribes beyond what might be on our other guy and to be honest I don't like our chances. Obviously we seemed panicked so we can ask Maliki if there is a place we can stay for a couple days while things die down. Then we do NOT go there. We need a safehouse but I don't trust Maliki that much anyway. This crap stinks of something bigger and I don't like it. We might be better finding our own place to hole up or even just bugging out depending on what we find.

>>28533893
That's too long. Umair is dead. There's no time unless there is a doc on top of us and ready to go.
>>
>>28533918
Yea, I have a feeling Umair's somewhat expendable. Hell, we're probably expendable. Wonder if he just wanted us to do the job and then kill us later.

Still curious about our friend Rachim.

>>28533893
I'm happy as long as combat and everything remains so gritty. I have little knowledge of Algeria or North African culture so adding things that aren't real won't bother me. If you want to have some crazy GLA uprising or something I won't be bothered.

I think as long as it seems like it 'could' be real, it is fine. It does not have to conform to the current or historical political situation, but keeping it plausible would be a nice touch. You could always say it is set in an Alternative Universe.

(mapanon here)

its not particularly close to what I actually remember of being in Morocco and Algeria, I'd agree. but some of the comments on checkpoints and the unpleasantness of it all reminds me of passing through Myanmar, and the gun-runinng towns on the Iranian/Afghan border, back in the 1990's. you could get an AK for $10 there, and half a dozen mags to test it with on a target. sped $25, and they gave you a goat to test it on. Dont want to think what they're like now. The politics feels more like the news I've read on libya than algeria, but the overall feel is plausible, if not realistic. you're managing to create an immersive setting.

So, it's not accurate for the location, but the writing more than made up for that - and made it real enough that pulling up the maps, and actually thinking what tactical approach to take was rather a no-brainer. and there's stages where its felt like our character could very easily be shot, by one bad move. very few quest threads I've ever looked at have that sort of response. and that's why I got organised with the maps - because it felt like the risk was worth taking the right actions.

you've got the right feel to the text, and actually, I like the slow rate of some of it - I just leave the tab open whle I'm working on stuff in front of the PC, and wait for an update. if you can combine that with some fast-paced stuff in the moments of real tension, you might well have a winning narrative going on.
as for what we should be doing? CPR soon as maliki's off the phone. lets try to keep him alive.
>>
>>28534125
oh, and all I'll say is, I wont manage the weekend (sorry, good writing is one thing, but the last chance to see my other half before she flies off to the other side of the world for most of december wins.), but I certainly hope its still running next week.

Also, I would say I'm happy with it being fictional characters, not trying to actually touch on RL politics, and to have it just using algeria as the background for the action - I like the idea of usng RL locations where players can use initiative to look at maps, and tactics, and that sort of stuff though. Particularly if we're a mercenary sniper who's being dragged ever deeper into civil war, drug and slave deals, double-crossings and militias, all the while trying to get even on the guy who's put a bounty on his head, so he can finally escape from the spiral of violence, or to complete whatever mysterious objective forced him to kill Mu'awiya's son in the first place...

I am so glad we didn't miss any of those first shots. It'd be a shame to miss out on the rest of this just because we bled to death in the middle of nowhere. We screwed up only one dice roll so far and it's haunted us the entire rest of the campaign. Risks indeed. I like it.

Here's hoping we don't run into any real military any time soon.
>>
>>28534401
Yea. We should get some sort of brace.
>>
>>28534125
W-What were you doing running around the Iran/Afghan border back in the 90s?
>>
>>28533893
I really liked the idea of this being somewhat set in the C&C Generals universe like you mentioned earlier. It gave everything an edge of mystique while allowing for a good deal of reality - real life places and modern objects but with an alternative timeline to our own.

So I really don't mind your lack of in depth familiarity with the region, it's the wider setting that's important.

Also you did an amazing job anyway.
>>
>>28534456
everyone's got to have a holiday sometimes. I wouldnt dare go to those places in this century though. Back then it was enough to have a Tokarev under the seat in case of trouble... now? doubt you'd ever get time to fire.

And going through Myanmar/Burma is the reason I laugh my pasty white arse off at most of /k/ when thy start going on about the Daily Heil articles and claiming the US/UK/EU/wherever is a "police state". They wouldnt know what a police state is like if it bit them on their backside. That place was scary as fuck. People wouldnt even say hello, because they feared that their neighbours were in secret police and might report them.

The amusing thing is, technically, I could list myself as an arms dealer nowadays - though not in front of any Mossad agents, I hope.

(Actually, I sell historical arms. rather than modern hardware, but that fact rather spoils the story, does'nt it?)
>>
>>28534642
Sounds pretty cool.

But anyway, I'm thinking this Quest's version of Algeria fell apart rather than stayed stable in the Arab Spring- but culturally they're also rather secular if I recall correctly. So, we'll probably see less sectarian violence, which should be helpful. Does our main character have a name? We should name him. I don't know enough about Algerian names though.
>>
>>28534731
No name. I'd like to keep it that way though.

I love the setting of many disparate groups vying for control over the same region with implications of a potentially wider conflict either building up or already occurring (those anonymous 'backers' supposedly calling the shots).

I'd say we're better without a name. lets us put ourselves into his shoes.

and yes, avoiding sunni-shia sectarian conflict is a plus side, and something I liked - it feels more like politically motivated warlords, their militias jockeying for power in a broken state that's on the verge of collapse into total civil war, rather than the senseless poison of sunni/shia/alawites in syria, or iraq.

Oh, one last note for OP if he reads it. reading through the text, you describe it as "an old draugnov." - you may be interested to learn that the older models had a different rifling rate, which actually made them more accurate (roughtly 20% tighter groupings) with standard ammunition - but made incendiary and armor-piercing incendiary ammunition unstable and less accurate. with a good PSO scope, that thing is likely capable of sniping the next spanish arms dealer at nearly a mile away. certainly 600-1200m (1/3-2/3rds of a mile range)
