You dream.

The black shapes from your last nightmare chase you through the woods, the trees a thin parody of their true splendor and filled with countless hungry eyes. You are panting to heavily to scream as you trample the thorny path, the bushes and plant life making small scratches on your legs as your run for your life. You see a cave, and can feel the fear the eyes feel towards it, more fear than you believe even their hunger can overcome. You run inside panting and know at once you are not alone.

A thin finger traces down your spine and when you try to turn and look you find you are rooted firmly in place by countless sticky threads. The last things you see is a massive fang filled maw rushing towards your throat.

You shoot awake with a yell as the memory of the dream echoes through your mind. You run your hand through your hair, damp with sweat, and grumble as you throw off the furs which cover you and stand up with a stretch. You run your tongue over your teeth and remember what happened the day before.

You are Delarus Hule. Your master, Mathios, had been killed leaving you as the only ranger left in the village. Your job is to explore, hunt, find threats before they arrive to the village, and countless other things in the official capacity. Unofficially, your job is to venture out, sometimes for days, and make contacts with the guardians of the world, guide the wayward back and harvest crystallized cordis for enchantment and refining.

>>
You grab a cloth, a pinch of herbs and ashes of rosemary and start cleaning your teeth, remembering that in your exhaustion you did not do so the night before. You move over to the fireplace, the embers left from last night still going, if just barely and nearly trip over one of your masters books. You dust the small journal off and set it on the table where it was before, remembering the mystery on your hands. Your teacher had gone out into the southern woods, a hostile territory intent on destroying a life eater, a sort of undead spirit given shape through rage and hunger. He had also taken every magical item and the cordis he had spent so long in collecting with him, and when he came back to the village, dying of an unknown poison, there was no sign of any of it. Where did he go? By Nyx, what did he get himself into?

You sniff the air and the sweetly sour stench of rot reminds you no one had lived here in a very long time. You look out the window and see the sun has not even started burning away the morning fog, so you resolve yourself to clean the place up a bit. You spend a few hours dusting the place up, and even scatter lavender and cloves here and there in order to improve the places smell, but the rotten foul smell remains. Frowning you lift your arm and the source of the stench become abundantly clear. Without your cloak the Sytherian Worm's remains took on their usual foul stench and you seem to have gotten a bit on you.
(cont)
>>
You grab a towel and make your way outside to the small shack next to the house and open the door. Master had previously taken great pains to ensure his cabin was impossibly comfortable, with a very soft bed, good food always on hand, and fresh drink for when the mood struck him. His crown jewel however was his enchanted bath. Using a flame salamander's cordis he ensured it would remain hot at all times, a strange combination of gorehides and drider cordis make it drain and destroy filth and gunk, and it seems he managed to get some sort of spiritual stone which constantly made the bathwater carry the scent of spring. As you slink down into the tub and let the heat drain away your fatigue you must admit that despite your preference for living on the bare minimum, having a bath like this once and a while would be very nice indeed.

You take some time with your grooming, using a stone to help scrub away unwanted grime or skin which would hinder you, file your nails down enough so they will never get in the way of your archery, and as you towel off you look over and see a small metal mirror and a straight razor, impossibly fine. You give a small smile before running at your face, small patches of peach fuzz not particularly much as far as beards go, but decide to give it a try.

You leave feeling refreshed and only cutting yourself a few times in hardly noticeable areas.
(cont)
>>
You step into the cabin and grab a pair of regular day clothes as you decide what to do. Vistilia has some flowers and herbs she wants you to stock up on for her, and while you already got a few of the easier ones, there are some which only grow in the southern woods. Belle, the only daughter of the Crispin family is on the mend under the watchful eye of the Church of Melidius, but they may not want to be disturbed, plus the family is sort of a jerk when someone is not dieing. Then again, you are down to about 14 steel arrows, you could always go order some more of them at the blacksmith, or really anything. The vanguard is also probably busy shoring up the defense of the village now that your master is gone and could maybe use some help. Of course, Thomas and Julius, the so called 'Mages' of the village are also probably hurting for rare components.

The harvest festival is still some time away, and you could think of maybe getting an act going. Of course you also did do all that research on spirits and the like last night, so there could be merit in exploring that.

You look at your leathers and run a hand over the plates which formed on it's back as a result of the Cordis of the giant Sytherian jumping wyrm gave you. You could play around with it a bit more.

How shall we spend this day, ranger?

You run your hand down your face and think. You spent a lot of your arrows the last few weeks hunting and the last time you went to the blacksmith was, well, ages ago. You glance back at your armor and decide that it is probably best to let the herbs and oils you soak your leathers in to have a bit more time to work at getting them clean. You put on your regular boots and make your way into town.

As you walk beyond the farms, you see several people getting their animals ready and their tools sharp. Farming, from what you have seen, seems to be a job which requires lots of work in short bursts and then nights spent drinking at the local tavern. You find yourself carefully walking the side roads and short cuts, stepping out of view and making no noise almost purely out of habit as you make your way into town. You see despite the chill morning the blacksmith is already outside working his forge, creating what you think is a hoe of some sort. His massive arms, like cords of steel, stand bare as he grips the white hot metal and slams his hammer down on it. Sparks fly up and land on his arms, but he pays it no mind. His forehead is already beaded with sweat despite the chill morning and you see his bushy brows are furrowed in concentration. You glance inside his shop proper and see countless other farming tools, all likely getting prepared for the harvest.

You wait until he is done sending sparks everywhere and give him a firm tap on one of his massive biceps. He whirls around to face you and you see a few singed areas in his large mustache and sideburns. He looks at you for a few seconds before smiling a large gap toothed smile. "well nah, if it ain't Delarus! Comin' down to see the likes of civeelization, is ya?" He asks lifting some goggles which were covering his eyes as he puts his massive gloved hands on your shoulders. "Let's get a look at ya ther'. Hm, you be gettin in a fight with a cat thar boy?" He asks runnig a soot covered hand over your face.
(cont)
>>
"Well, something like that." You shrug, trying to play off your shaving mishap as something if not intentional then unimportant.

"Sorry bout yer teacher boy. If'n there's anything you need, you just come talk to me." He says and you nod, thankful for his words.

"Actually, now that you mention something you can do I was wondering if you could get me some arrows. I am running pretty damn low." You say and he grins.

"Oh, so come to be given me some more work, eh?" He asks and you shrug.

"What can I say? I go through them faster than I would have thought. Plus with me being the only ranger it falls to me to be ready. Plus I was thinking of getting a dagger or sword. Not like my knife, a proper fighting weapon." You say and he blinks in shock.

"Gettin a proper sword now ain'tcha. How many of them arrows you be needing?" He asks and you think.

"As many as you can squeeze in. I know you are busy with the harvest coming up." You say and he shrugs.

"Ain't hard to make em. Figure I could get maybe two hunted to you in a couple days." He explains.

"A sword then?" You ask and before you can reply you hear the rhythmic steps of mailed feet behind you.

"Ah, Dianna. The boy here is finally thinking about gettin a sword. Think you can find one fer im?" He asks.

Dianna, or Di as you normally call her, was the blacksmiths only child and what you might consider a childhood friend. She had always been the tomboyish sort, and as a result quickly started playing at being a knight with the other boys rather than being a princess who needs saving. It was only natural, then, that she would continue on and join the vanguard. She spent all her time training, and as a result her feminine figure, while still there, had been noticeably filled with muscle.
(cont)
>>
Her originally long brown hair had been hacked mercilessly short at one time, though it seems she finally managed to compromise with her mother and cut it into a short bob. She gives you a lop sided smile as you look over her new armor. "Finally deciding to get a real weapon, eh? Well, the best fighting in the village will help her poor lost friend out." She jokes and you hear Urik scoff.

"Only cuz yer usin my damn weapons, you fool girl. Now hurry yourself up, or you'll be late fer yer vanguard duties." He shoos the two of you away and you go inside the store.

As she looks over the swords you decide to make some small talk. "Off early this morning"

"yeah, decided to pull a few extra watches. Can't be too safe." She explains.

"In full gear? Seems more than a simple watch." You continue.

"Well, I will also be doing more training and working on the barracks some. You know. Just have to get out." She says.

"Away from your mother and father? Why?" You ask and she pulls out a sword and tests its balance with a few swings.

"Oh, you know. Stuff." She replies putting it back and grabbing another.

"Stuff." You tilt your head and she shrugs.

"Girl stuff." She continues and you laugh a little making her turn to you with a frown.

"This coming from the girl who jumped the Crispin boys after they made vanguard practice uncomfortable for me to show up at? The same one who took her dad' best sword and joined up with the guard when we said girl's can't be knights?" You ask and she gives a small smile.

"Well, sometimes jerks need to be proven wrong." She explains before looking at a few more of the weapons. You let the silence pass for a while and as she grabs a single edged saber she finally continues. "They say it's about time I get married."
(cont)
>>
"And you don't want to." You reason and she shakes her head.

"Not right now, damn. I got shit I want to do!" She explains before nodding and throwing the saber, sheath and all at you. "This should work well for you, good blade and you can use it without much training"

As she turns to leave you inspect the blade and say "If you ever want to talk, or what ever, I just live in an isolated cabin on the outskirts of the village." You say and she stops, shaking her shoulders slightly. "Hardly any dangerous monsters around at all, and I can promise that there are probably some parts of that area I haven't gotten around to booby trapping yet, so if you want to talk you know."

She finally can't contain her laughter anymore and after calling you a jerk and throwing a helmet at you she runs off towards the vanguard barracks.

You walk out of the store holding the saber and talk to the blacksmith once more. "Seems I found my new blade. What would you like for it?" You ask and the blacksmith scratches at a particularly singed part of his side burns.

"Blade like that, a mighty fine weapon you know. Priceless some might say." He starts and you cross your arms. "Course, all them arrows be takin a bit of work too. What with all the farmers needing implements, and the harvest coming up." He says and you tilt your head, waiting for it. "In fact, with how much work you be needing done it may be you run yourself poor with all my very fine wares."
(cont)
>>
"You are getting at something, I know not what." You state and the man shrugs.

"Course, if'n you was family I wouldn't have ta be worrying about something so small as cost. Figure family gots to help each other out. So if you were to, say, marry my daughter I could feel nice and secure making you all sorts of things." He muses

"Ah, but once we are married you will quit being a blacksmith and I would have to work twice as hard." You smile then nod. "Flame salamander salts?" You ask and he scoffs.

"Bring me bout three pounds of em, need to be gettin ready for the winter. By the end of the harvest if you please." He instructs and you loop the saber around your belt.

Seems you have a sword now. Well, what should we do?

"You wouldn't happen to have a mask or something, would you?" You ask glancing back.

"Mask? Nothin like that, though ifn' you go to the tavern you can probably get one of the ones used for Atraxion's rituals for the festival. They should work for what ever you be needin' em for." He explains and you nod.

You walk across the village square, looking with some level of wonder as the workers are starting to build the foundations for the festival and you can't help but realize how very alive and active your village is. Of course, maybe all villages are like this in the world beyond the woods and mountains, but it is hard to imagine it. All those people, all doing so much all unrelated to each other. You ponder how nice it might be to one day maybe try and see what's out there. Julius and Mr. Urumesh won't say much about where they came from, and maybe for them that's best. If this place is really so isolated the only ones who would come here are those trying to get away from something, and if that's the case what could be going on out there which would make them want to run here of all places?

You let that sobering thought carry you into the tavern doors where you notice there are thankfully few people there. The few drunks from the night before are sleeping their late night fun off on tables and against walls and you see a man with his feet poking out from under a chair in the far corner. The tavern-master doesn't seem to be in, but there is a figure sweeping up dirt and grime from the floors and tables. You glance around for Thomas, but don't see him so you clear your throat and cause the figure to turn.

Fulvia Tress was easily the one thing every teenaged boy in the village wanted. With long blond hair, full heaving breasts, perfectly smooth skin, full lips, a perfect figure, and legs which make you wish you were an alcoholic sometimes. She was a year or so older than you and had been working at the tavern since her father died. Of course, her being attractive and working around drunks all the time gave her a bit of a reputation around town, and some misunderstandings with the wives of some of the farmers only added to the rumors but she never seemed to care. She gives you a bright warm smile as soon as she sees you.

"Delarus!" She beams walking over to you. "It's so good to see you. I am so sorry about what happened to Mathios." She nods and you give a thin smile of your own.

"Hello Fulvia." You reply looking around for the tavern-master, or Thomas or maybe a nice jumping wyrm to talk to instead. "Just doing some clean up around the place is all. Want to hang out for a while?"

"No, I can't do that I'm afraid. Have a lot of work to do before the first snow. I was wondering, do you have any of those masks to Atraxion?" You ask and she gives you a strange look.

"Going to give some devotion to the god of misbehaving are you?" She counters and walks over to the bar, then roots around.

"Need it for some work I was planning on doing." You state as she makes a show of wiggling her hips as she searches.
(cont)
>>
You think of the last time you saw a Mask to Atraxion you saw her wiggling her hips just like that while sneaking a few of the farmers into the back of the tavern. They paid her a small fee and she kept the mask on as she showed you some very interesting sights. That was about two years ago now and you haven't really been too comfortable hanging around the place since. Some rumors are true, it seems. She pops back up from behind the bar with one of the pure white masks. She walks over to you and offers it while showing her pure white teeth. "Here it is, now don't let me catch you doing anything bad with this mask." She says simply.

You reach out to take it, the two small crescent moons for eyes and the giant one for the mouth sneering at you as you do. As you wrap your fingers around it she continues holing it and then puts her hand on your forearm. "Really Delarus, you should come by more often. You are already so much more grown up than most the village boys. I would just really like it if we could hang out more." She explains.

You feel like the mask sneers more as you remember the night you saw her only wearing that mask, taking payment and singing praises to Atraxion. You remember the men leaving and her smiling as she licked countless unknown fluids from the ground and went off to get a few more. You remember her locking eyes with you where you hid and shifting her mask, her white teeth perfectly clear in the pale moonlight. "Maybe." You offer, gently taking the mask from her grip. "When work settles down." You say and she smiles.

"I look forward to it" She says before going back to her work.

You leave the tavern and have mixed feelings about what just happened as you make your way back to the hut. You set the mask onto the table and then go over to your armor. You whisper a few words and the Cordis falls out of your leathers, making them their usual comfortable and plateless form.
(cont)
>>
You touch the earthen colored cordis to the mask and whisper a few words as you extend your will, and the stone merges with the mask to Atraxion. You see several circles on the white mask as you put it on and discover it is totally dark. You try saying something but nothing happens. You swear as you stumble and knock one of the books off the table and as it slams into the ground you realize you can see the sound waves as the ripple off everything. In exchange for sight, you get the ability to see sound. You make a note of it in your journal before repeating the process of taking it out and putting it into your bow. The bow changes little, the wood becoming bark colored plates of a material similar to the creature. On a hunch you draw the bow back without any arrows and fire it.

A subsonic shock wave fires from where you shot and hits the fruit you had aimed at. It takes a large chunk out of the surface of it and, you think, if it is as disorienting as the wyrm's roar was then it will probably disrupt the concentration of anything it hits.

You nod to yourself and make a note of it

You ready your gear, lock up the cabin and with a small smile on your face leave a note which reads "Off slaying dragons." You make your way up through the northern path behind the cabin which will lead you to the mountains. You curse as you start climbing as you remember you forgot your master's journal on the mountains this time, but just try to go by memory.

As you remember, the primary predator is called a blade drake, massive flying creatures with countless fanged teeth, a wickedly sharped barbed tail, and a rather carnivorous disposition. You look up at the sky as you climb the mountain and try to remember when they tend to migrate further into the mountains. You are not quite certain if all of them have left yet and flying carnivores with lashing tails and very unhappy personalities are things you try to, as a rule, be certain about. You scale up the cliffs and find your way onto a path which you believe will lead you to a flame salamander nest. You glance up at the cliff side and see a gruff, a shaggy goat like creature with six legs which jut out to the side on it which it uses to crawl along mountain faces like a spider of some sort. It stares at you with it's lazy square eyes and offers a sagely rough 'Maaaaa' before going back to eating what small grass there is on the mountain side.
(cont)
>>
You think back to what your teacher told you about flame salamanders as you walk along the path, choosing your steps carefully. "Flame salamanders are like lizards made of molten stone. The salts we collect are the remains of their skin after they shed to become bigger. Interestingly, barring accidents or predators, flame salamanders do not die. They will just keep getting bigger and bigger until finally they become so old and powerful they gain control of their cordis and gain the ability to use magic willingly. They are generally docile, though will turn aggressive if you get near their young. The only reason they are not the dominant species of the area is because many of the creatures like to eat them."

You then asked him how exactly flying lizards managed to eat lizards made of molten rock and he scolded you for sassing him. You pick your foot holds carefully, making sure you don't step on any of the likely countless camouflaged creatures of the mountain perhaps slightly cautions after your run in with the giant stealthy jumping wyrm. You nearly get caught by a passing True Manticore, but your cloak allows you to hide perfectly well. You make your way through the crags and rocks and finally find yourself near a large cave. You crouch down behind a rather large rock and peer down, keeping your eyes open. You see a few glowing hot forms waddling around the entrance as you lick your lips and think about how to get down there.
(cont)
>>
At once, you get a strange feeling in the back of your neck and turn around to see what looks like a large cat like creature, only all along it's back and tail are long thin quills. It locks eyes with you as soon as you see it and lets out a snarl. Evidently it came here to prey on the salamanders, but finds you a bit more appealing.

YOU ENCOUNTER SPINED RAVAGER

IT WANTS TO EAT YOU

WHY DOES EVERYTHING WANT TO EAT YOU?!

It look at it's hard body and note that it seems to have thick skin and muscle. Your conic blasts alone, as disorienting as they are, will likely be unable to kill this thing as it did the fruit.

The beast snarls and bristles and several spikes fly off it's spine and into the boulder you were in just a moment ago, taking the snarl as a sign to just dodge in general.

You pull back an arrow and let it fly, the wave disorienting the ravager as the steel arrow slams into it's flank. The beast roars as you rake a knee and fire a second shot, the disorienting effects of the bow making the creature flinch and making your called shots a little less effective.

You swear as the beast charges towards you, it's too wide mouth and external teeth reminding you of a plant you read in a book once. It swipes at you with its claw and you leap to the side, yet feel a hot stab of pain through your leg. You look down and see one of the spines deep in your thigh meat. You snarl as you realize the creature has to have some of them under it's legs of on it's body some where. You pull back your bow and let loose another few arrows as you roll being a rock. The beast howls as the annoying roar makings it difficult to focus on you. You wrap your hand around the spike and pull, but it holds fast and you feel like you are going to tear out your leg.

You look closer and see the spine is made of several thin layers and while going in is impossible smooth, if you run your hand on the opposite direction it tends to stick. You let it go for a moment before hopping onto your own good leg and leaping out from behind the rock face. The Ravager is waiting for you.

It leaps on you as you get up and bites down towards you, but you manage to get your good leg under it and hold it up. It snarls and swiped, and this time you rock to the side as spines slam into the rock bellow. You pull back your bow and fire a shock wave into the creature's face, disorienting it before kicking it off, taking aim, and firing two arrows into it's chest. It lays there, twitching.

You swear as you put pressure on your injured leg. As long as you do not put too much weight on the thing it just feels like there is an uncomfortable pressure in your thigh. You don't think he hit the bone, but it still hurts a fair amount. You pull one of your steel arrows from your quiver and make the motions to start the ritual. You mutter the strange syllables which will help direct your image of what you want the spell to do and like before your energy leaks out, acting like a blue mist this time which coils and froths. You draw back your bow and knock the enspelled arrow before firing it at the wounded creature.

There is a flash of blinding blue light and a wave of exhaustion overtakes you as the arrow does it's work. After a few moments you hear the sound of the gem falling onto the ground from the beasts eye where the arrow struck home. You limp over to the body and bend over. The Cordis is a blood red thing, with flecks of white and silver within. You put the cordis into one of your many, many little pockets and you freeze. That strange feeling of being watched is back.

You turn and see several of the flame salamanders looking at you with their too large eyes. Molten stone dribbles out of their mouths as they look at you, then back to the corpse, then back to you again. The largest in the group, one around the size of your waist and with an overly large neck-frill makes a "blorp" sound and you blink.

It takes a second for recognition to dawn on you, but you limp away form the body and raise your hand as if offering it to them. They look to the body, then back to you, then the body again before making more of those blorp sounds and falling over the body. Liquid flame falls out of their drooling maws and melts the creature down, allowing them to scoop the remains into their mouths and swallow it like a drink of some sort.

You realize that while they are distracted the cave might be unguarded.

Do you risk it with going into the cave and getting your salts fast or spend all day at the edge of the cave and collect the salts?

You look over at the empty cave and decide to leave the salamanders to their meal. You walk slowly down the path towards the cave, lifting your hood and taking full advantage of the partially camouflaging abilities of the enchanted item. You slide along the side of the cave wall and give a quick peak inside then dart your head back and analyze what you saw.

It looked to be a large chamber which goes further in and juts off to the right. There were no salamanders in there that you saw, likely the large ones went up to explore the meal you left them, but you know it won't ;last them long the way they were eating it. Taking a risk you crouch low, your thigh burning as you properly distribute your weight, and start your silent walk into the cave and look around. You see the melted remains of stone and meat and the cave holds the distinct stench of sulfur and flame. You listen and don't hear anything other than what seems the be some almost rhythmic wind within the cave, likely caused by the howling wind outside crossing an opening deeper within.

You glance around, but you suppose three pounds of salts wouldn't be just sitting on a nice pedestal right in the middle of the room, so you press on. You walk maybe two hundred feet, your step careful and precise and you start sweating, worried about how much time this is taking. Where are the salts? If they are shedding then there must be salts. You turn to the right and see what you believe to be the entrance to another chamber. Deciding no guts no glory you step in.

Right in front of easily the largest flame salamander you have ever seen. The creature is massive, it's sleeping form a bit larger than you. It's deep snoring and heavy breathing the sound of wind you heard earlier. You are about to turn back and go when you see several small salamanders no bigger than your foot curled up in the corner, their small molten bodies still not warm enough on their own to keep them perfectly comfortable. You get a thought and glance around the room and by a nest on the opposite side of the giant salamander you see it, a huge pike of flame salamander slats. Clearly the nursery is where the smallest ones grow up and naturally where they shed as well. You pull out your large bag and put in as much as you think you can carry on your bum leg. You get far more than you anticipated and turn to leave when the giant eye on the flame salamander opens.

You freeze and let your cloak fall over you deeper. The salamander makes a show of yawning, then sniffs the air and looks confused. It glances your way and for a second you think you are dead, but then it turns towards the little ones and starts disorganizing the salamander pile with it's snout, likely counting to make sure they are all still there.

You take a few cautious steps towards the door, not wanting any sound to alert the large creature of your passing, and hold your breath. You count the heart beats to the door and as you stand in the frame the beast whips it's head around to you. You go wide eyed as it locks eyes with you and lets out a large roar. You quickly limp out of the cave and slide down a small rock approach leading to the mouth of it as the other salamanders return. You pull your hood down lower as it takes on a light greyish coloring similar to the rocks you are on. The salamanders look around for a few moments, then go inside the cave proper once more, likely to try and figure out what happened.

You smile as you limp back to town.

As you make your way back to your cabin you are panting heavily. The heavy salts and your leg adding considerable strain to the task, and when you finally throw the salts down onto the wooden floor you collapse into a chair and just catch your breath for a while. The one thing people never warn you about pain is that it is exhausting. Even a dull ache or a minor annoyance can sap your energy as you try to perform any action. You look down at the spine and then at some of the journals you neatly put on the shelf. You shrug and use your bow the pick at the one about the mountain area until it falls onto the floor and you pull it towards you using the bow.

You open it up to the part on spined ravagers and discover an oil you can make which will let you remove it easily. You use your bow as an improvised cane, the strong wood bending under the strain but not warping or breaking. You open your cabinets and start the tonic while you grab a scale as well. It takes a while, but as you wrap your thigh in the cold, foul smelling ointment you discover you have about ten and a half pounds of flame salamander salts. No wonder climbing down was such a chore.

You decide you have left the ointment on long enough and remove the rag, noting your leg looks a bit saggy, is the best way to describe it. You put both hands on the spine and pull with all your mights, expects the pain and struggle. Instead it slips out as easily as if it were a greased up pig. You look at the spike and set it on the table before wiping your thigh clean and redressing the wound with some proper medicine.

It is currently afternoon. What should you do?

Seems to be only the two of you. If that. Though that does give me an interesting idea...
>>
You look longingly at the boo which details the spring and then shake your head. Your leg is in no condition to travel in, even if it is just a stone's throw away. The gloomwillow vine was also a stone's throw away as you remember how that turned out. Instead you mutter something and remove the Sytherian Wyrm cordis from the bow and put the spined ravager cordis into it. The bow shifts instantly as the cordis melts in and you are now holding a spined bow. You look at the strange thing and note you don't seem to gain any additional power from it, and test firing some blanks doesn't seem to do anything. You knock an arrow and open your back door to let it fly, but it doesn't do anything particularly special. You frown as you pull back on the string as far as you can and notice the bow bends further back than your original bow ever could. You nod and look near the grip, where you would normally sight down, and see a small copper circle with a small hole in the middle, maybe the side of a rain drop.

You knock an arrow and pull the bow as far back as you can and look down the sight into the small circular disk and, to your amazement, you feel your vision becoming more focused. The falcon the the tree which was originally just a speck in your vision now seems so close you can almost touch it. You take aim with it and fire, and the arrow soars a great distance until it strikes the branch the bird was standing on, sending it flying away. Only kill what you will eat.

You nod and look at your saber. On a hunch you put the wyrm cordis into it and mutter your nonsense which helps you focus. The saber changes swiftly. Along the edge of the blade, rotating around slowly, are the saw like teeth of the wyrm. You grip it tightly and feel your arm shake as the teeth spin quickly, responding to your will. You limp outside and use the fast moving saw like teeth on the edge of the slightly thicker blade to cut into the wood and through it easily as a quick saw.

Knowledge gain: Wyrm tooth blade lvl 1
Longshot quill bow lvl1

You disenchant the items and then put the quill into the blade. The blade become a long thin quill, similar to what you saw fencers in story books use. The grip, pommel and guard change as well, becoming more elegant. You perform a few testing thrusts with it and then grip it similar to how you did before and the spike shoots out of the blade, slamming into the wooden door. You frown as you realize you now have only a handle, but slowly you see a new spike start growing to take it's place.

You take out the cordis and put it into your armor. Your armor grows quills and you note they do not seem able to be removed, but serve as a defensive boost and prevents creatures from grabbing you. You disenchant and start panting, realizing you are using up your magical capacity quickly as you do so. You limp over to the smiling mask and the mask changes to some sort of mouth guard with outward teeth. You put it on and try putting some food into it. It snaps down quickly, like a trap of some sort, and doesn't let go. So a flytrap and a bear trap.

GAIN KNOWLEDGE:
Quill armor lvl 1
Gentleman's quill lvl1
Ravager mouth lvl 1

You pant as the exhaustion of enchanting and disenchanting takes you and you realize it seems to be getting dark out. You put the cordis in a chest and decide you can probably decide what to do with them later.

You are pretty tired and your leg is bothering you.

You carefully take care of your teeth, set your armor up, wash yourself, then go to bed. You curl up in the overly large blankets, your one leg sticking out as you try to keep it straight and drift off.

You dream

""are you a fairy?" You ask and the woman scoffs.

"I think not! Those low down, sneak thieves! I am far too proper to be one of them. Next guess." She replies calmly, her cat like green eyes locking onto yours and making you feel a bit too much like a bird about to be pounced on by the neighborhood cat.

"Then, then, um, a mermaid!" You offer and she tilts her head, her long blue hair coiling and spreading across the water's surface.

"Why do you think that?" She asks and you get excited.

"Because, because, you are always in the water! So you are a mermaid because you are part fish!" You offer and she smiles.

"Afraid not dear." She replies.

She pulls herself out of the water and sits down next to you on the edge of the pool. She lifts one of her slender legs while she gives a smile. "See? Not fish at all, and I can go onto land if I like. I just don't like to." She kicks her feet playfully in the water a few times, sending small ripples and splashes across the otherwise still surface of the pool. "Besides, mermaids are scary looking. I don't look scary, do I?" She asks with a tilt of her head.
(cont)
>>
You shake your head back and forth as the woman gives a wide smile, her teeth bright on tanned skin. "Last guess."

"Then, um, um, maybe." You think hard about it, furrowing your eyebrows in concentration. "You are a princess."

She laughs then, a pure, bubbling, girlish thing which sends your nerves from your hair to your toenails tingling in delight. She continues laughing in simple joy for a few moments before looking at you. "Why do you say that?"

"Because Fulvia says when you are a princess you are pretty and nice and you can do what ever you want all day! You are really pretty and really nice, and you said you like to be in the water all day so you are!" You point out happily and the woman claps.

"Wonderful, then a princess I shall be! Shall you play me a song sir knight?" She asks giving an overly formal bow as she slides back into the waters. You put your pipe to your lips and play the song your mother taught your as dark, slender fingers wrap around your throat and-

You awaken to the sound of sparrows singing. You look around you room and push yourself out of bed, the fatigues from the night before now just a vague memory. You flex your leg a little, the wound much better than before, and decide to let it breathe some. You prepare your breakfast, eat, wipe your teeth, bathe, then decide what to do for today.

A man needs his salt
>>
>>28707038
Excellent, my child. Once we are done with the blacksmith, we shall join your brother in his studies.
>>
You look at the large bag of the salts you just through into the corner, the bag too heavy to bother taking it down to the vault with your leg in the condition it was in. You get a separate smaller pouch and measure out about 3 pounds before setting it on the table. You grab your cloak, then your saber and your regular walking about clothes, making a mental note that you have to clean your other clothes at some point, then off into the village you go.

The walk is noticibly easier, though you don't do your regular habit of sneaking behind people and stalking them while on their walks for practice being unseen. Instead you casually walk through the area with a pleasant smile on your face, and a slight limp in your step. You make your way over to the blacksmith and note Urik is already hard at work, pounding away and shaping steel. You wonder how the villagers ever sleep in?

You luck out and manage to approach him as he finishes what looks like a pitchfork of some sort and he gives you another wide toothy smile. "Delarus boy! back again, eh? Decied ta be marryin' Dianna? I want ta be seein me grandchild fore I am old and grey and can't hold the boy up!" He explains and you give him a small shake of your head.

"Here are the flame salts I promised." You explain handing the bag over to him. He opens the bag up and gives it a good look before nodding impressed.

"Damn fine work, and faster'n I expected too. I still have a few tools on order, but I'll get your arrows ready enough, sure as sure." He states and you nod.

"I may be going on an extended trip to the south in a couple days, and I expect I may be needing them." You say.
(cont.)
>>
"Driders?" He asks.

"At least." You confirm.

"Well, if you can find anything else you want to be tradin for in the shop let me know, but I won't have any good material till the mines finish up their haul and I have a chance to create more. Most of what I make is generally by order you know, the rest are just things I played around with or from people who skipped their payments." He explains.

You spend some time looking around his shop, though nothing in particular catches your eye. You are looking over a suit of armor you are pretty sure was originally a pile of shovels when you feel a strong slap hit you on the back. You stumble forward, nearly falling due to your leg, but manage to catch yourself on the table. You whirl around and see Dianna standing there in a tunic and pants. "Hey, I didn't hit ye that hard, did I?" she asks.

You resist the urge to use your ranger training to show her how hard, but then remember you have no bow and she can bet you up in a fist fight so you suck in a breath and shake your head. "No, leg got messed up yesterday when I was getting some supplied from the mountain." You say, careful to exclude mentioning it was to pay back her dad.

"Ouch, sorry." She says.

You shrug it off, ignoring your leg's suggestions of showing her where to shove her sorry and give her a smile. "No way to know. Still, managed to get what I needed and then some. You off somewhere?" You ask and she gives a shrug.
(cont)
>>
"Fulvia wants some help getting everything unpacked and ready to brew before the festival. I told her to get someone better at it, but I am pretty sure I am the only person she really hangs out with these days so." She shrugs as if it doesn't bother her. "Hey, if you want you can come help yourself, could always use an extra pair of hands."

You remember the smiling face of Atraxion and twitch a shoulder. "With this leg I would just wind up sitting on a bar stool giving orders, then you would get sick of me being in charge and kick me out. No one wants that." You explain and she nods, accepting it if not totally believing you.

"If you have time then." She says.

You walk her out and wave goodbye to her when you feel someone elbow you in the ribs gently.

Thomas, thin and bookish stands there with a smile on his face. "Saying goodbye in the morning, sending her off with a wave. People will talk you know."

Dianna could probably kick your ass, but mot Thomas, so you give him an elbow in return just as hard. "Well, let them talk, it's just noise." You say and start walking off towards the slowly growing merchants.

"Yeah, I guess. Still, suppose now that you are a proper man Urik has been trying to push her on you pretty hard." He says.

You blink as you realize he is right. Since your apprenticeship technically 'ended' you are, by all rights of the city, a full grown adult. You rub your face as her father's sudden pushiness suddenly makes sense. "Yeah, I suppose so. Don't really have much interest in marriage myself, but who knows right?"

"Right, exactly. Hey." He holds out his hand to stop you and you look at him. "I, uh, I need your help."

"Everyone needs my help these days. What do you need me to do? Kill all the drider's in the southern woods? Conqueror the guardian of the mountain? Maybe make a blade drake steak?" You ask and he blinks.

"Wha? Oh, oh no, nothing like that. Just, okay look I want to ask Fulvia to marry me." He says plainly.
(cont)
>>
"You want to ask Fulvia to, what?" You ask and he nods blushing and looking around.

"Y-yeah, you are the first person I told I guess. Look, as long as I am an apprentice under my master I am a kid and I can't, but here's the thing. My teacher's old books, the ones he never shows people, in them they say people from the mages college, like my master, have to accept an apprentice has graduated their apprenticeship when they can show that they can fully summon and bind and spirit." He explains.

You rub your eyes. "Isn't that dangerous?" You ask.

"If you summon something big without tribute, yeah. But I figure I can summon a sprite or something and bind it for just a few seconds, give it lots of honey and bread to make sure it isn't mad, then let it be on its way." He explains.

"Okay, so what do you need me for then?" You ask.

"My teacher keeps all the books with the names of creatures locked up behind a ton of wards. I mean, seriously, they would turn me into ash if I even looked at them wrong, but since you took over your masters work you have a lot of books too, some with names in them." He explains and you narrow your eyes.

That is true. Normally you just use a name to communicate with a spirit and make them happy to be known, at least according to your master, but wizards are different. They could, if they wished, force their will over the will of another spirit, binding them to their service. You could never do such a thing with your lower cordis capacity, but wizards had it to spare. You think about it some more and arrive at a point of logic.
(cont)
>>
"And you are sure Fulvia is okay with you, you know, marrying her?" You ask and he blushes harder.

"She is always so nice to me, and, and she kissed me last spring fair. Plus, she always touches my arm or what ever when we talk and I look into her eyes and I just know. I want to spend the rest of my life with this girl." He explains.

"But she doesn't know?" You ask and he shakes his head.

"No, I want to show my master I can do it, then walk right up to her and propose. Magic flying everywhere, it will be romantic." He says.

"Is that safe?" You counter.

"Totally. Look man, I know you have been avoiding people since you became a ranger, and if you don't want to do it then just forget it. I can do it on my own, I just thought you would want to help me out some with the preparations and stuff to make sure I got it right. Thought you would want your friend to be happy." He frowns looking around nervously.

"You know about those rumors about her right?" You ask and he shrugs.

"Like you said, it's just noise." He replies.

"Let me tell you a little story." You start off thinking back. "You remember when we all used to hang out, right? About what time did we stop?"

"Around, well, two years ago? We all have important stuff to do I guess. You stort of did the ranger thing and Dianna got busy with training when you weren't there." He shrugs.

"The reason I stopped hanging out with you guys was, well, around two years ago I saw Fulvia in the back of the tavern wearing a mask." You say and he blinks.

"Okay, so she was wearing a mask. Lots of people wear masks, and if there was a festival around then she would obviously wear one." He counters.

"it was a mask to Atraxion." You say and he shakes his head.

"That is the god of food and alcohol, right? Makes sense if she works in a tavern." He offers and you nod.

"It would make sense. Except the mask was the only thing she was wearing." You say.

"What do you-" He starts confused but you continue

"I saw her bring men, groups and pairs, and lead them to the back after they paid and she slept with them. Over and over. In the dirt she did things while singing praises to Atraxion." You explain.

"It wasn't her." He replies in a very quiet voice.

"She locked eyes with me from where I was hidden in the bushes, trying to find a rabbit that I had shot near town that had somehow escaped. I saw her lift her mask and smile at me." You say and he frowns.

>>
"Stop it." He replies.

"Look, I am not saying it to hurt you or anything. It's just the way she is. That's why I stopped hanging out with you guys and why things got so awkward between us." You say and he spits out a curse.

"I said shut up!"

Magic, pure, raw energy swirls around you now, a shapeless angry thing which you can't even begin to understand. "You are just jealous! The prettiest girl in the village is going to go with little Tom-tom! The Weakest of the bunch! Well I don't care! You can be jealous for all you want" He shouts.

"Thomas, I am not saying you can't marry her, just be aware she has experience and the villagers will-" You start but you see small motes of fire flicker to life then die around him.

"She isn't!" He shouts and you see one of the stands next to you warp slightly. "You stop saying those lies about her right now! If you ever say any of them again I will, I'll, I swear to the twelve if you say one more word about the woman I love I will kill you!" He says finally, then turns and runs towards the tower Julius lives in

>>
>>28708710
Well, put simply yes and no. All humans, for example, are born with a natural ability to cast ritual magic. Festivals and fairs and traditions like that are a perfect example of that. A bunch of humans using their combines small cordis capacity to enact a big spell which will have large effects.

A lot of spells however have sort of a "soul requirement" For example, you have Vitae 8 Cordis 7 meaning a total of 15. The average human male has 6 Vitae and 4 cordis while the average woman has 4 Vitae and 6 cordis. To be a ranger you need to have about 15 total soul in order to cast the binding spells and the communication spells needed.

Once you get to about 25-30+ soul you reach mage levels and are just so overflowing with power manipulating it and controlling it is like second nature. The cordis acts as sort of a jug for your mana or what ever you want to call it, while the vitae is your life, so to speak.

So if you have the cordis capacity to learn spells then all you need to do it is practice how to focus it, otherwise barring unusual circumstances, like humans and ritual magic, it can not really be done since your soul is busy just holding on to what it has.

I make a list of what we know generally. Like what items we can make, or also stuff about the lore and the gods and the like?

You increase your skills y using them more or less. Slow going I fear, but you will get feats eventually which will help.

A wizard can do all sorts of stuff. Elemental manipulation is one big part, but there are also things like curses, cordis and vitae manipulation, and all sorts of stuff. Thomas is more or less an elemental mage however. He is just really good at combining and manipulating the forces of nature. Some mages focus on enchantment, or alchemy, or force manipulation, or any number of things.

As I said above we are above average as far as power goes, but nowhere close to being mage level.

Well wanting to bind a spirit without the consent of Julius was bold enough to warrant telling him.

how do we increase our limit?

>A bunch of humans using their will combines their small cordis capacity to enact a big spell which will have large effects.

> your skills by using them more or less.

Come on fingers, just a bit longer.

true, but now he is emotional and might cause problems for the whole village.damn hunstman i can't stop thinking about the whore
>>
Question:
Does anyone think we should get our own Ranger apprentice?
>>
>>28708884
You read in a book that some mages are able to use their Vitae like their cordis, but you have no idea how it is done. Plus once your cordis is empty you just want to sleep to recover, once your Vitae is empty you go to sleep for good.

Some spirits might be able to give you sort of a smaller secondary tank in exchange for things, but otherwise you are pretty much just stuck with what you are born with.

That sounds mean. Let's just call her a devoted follower of Atraxian.

later once we become more experienced.(when we are forced to leave home basically)

We should patch things over with Julius by letting him study certain sections of some of our books and try and bro it up by taking him with us when we finally travel to the southern forests.

I'm just kind of concerned. I mean, being a PC and all, we've probably got plot armor. maybe. But should something happen to us, the town's left without a Ranger. That, and another pair of hands could be helpful in our adventures. Still, I guess we should wait a few more threads before getting a student.

I meant Thomas, damn it.

Should I cut down on word length? Should I try to add pictures to every post? If that one drawfag is here would it be fine to use part of that picture as my twitter picture?

>>28708976
Another problem with that is that your master did not associate with the village as much as he could so only the adults knew who he really was or what he did. Unlike the vanguards who fight monsters right in front of them the kids just think a ranger is a creepy guy who lives by himself in a cabin in the woods and sometimes comes back to give rocks to people.

Plus, unlike mages whose cordis energy just flies out of them at puberty and starts messing things up, rangers don't really have a specific "tell". Your master accepted you because you could hear the voices of spirits apparently. It is a very specific skillset so it is hard to find, but if you can get around to finding a good method for it then by all means, I have quite a number of children fleshed out.

Cutting word length would be good. Maybe a third as long with more choice instead of each choice leading to a very long result.
>>
>>28709083
Yeah, my post speed isn't ideal right now and I think that is hurting me. I just want it to feel like what choices people make matter, and don't want to bother with the little stuff.Maybe as I get things established, like who is who and what is where it will cut back on it quite a bit since I shouldn't, in theory, have to reintroduce concepts.
>>
>>28709151
Yeah I know what you mean. I have to commend you on the item customization. Really makes it feel like there's a lot of choice as far as play style goes. Plus we aren't stuck with just one specific item.
>>
>>28709042
I don't really mind waiting 20-30 minutes for a post since your posts are so long.
>>
>>28709216
Yeah, I agree. I can't take too much of the credit, as I got the idea from totemist quest where the players use something similar.

I do love customization though.

I noticed that the items have levels. Do they increase in power as we use them?
>>
>>28709470
Some do, others just need you to become better at enchanting to unlock more of their abilities. Really powerful items, like one made with the cordis of an actual spirit, have very different requirements for leveling them
