It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. Alas, even though they have attained the lofty goal of interstellar travel, mankind has yet to conquer it’s baser instincts.

Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are launched out of a spaceship in a drop pod filled with bright orange and highly toxic gel. You crash land into the target’s facilities, make a mess, do your job, and then get the hell out.

You are a Fall Guy. You are a Deniable Asset.

You glance around the room. Markos seems just as nonplussed by the weird atmosphere in the room as you are. You reach out and grab another slice of pizza, making sure to keep near eye contact with Elda. You fold it in half, an impressive feat considering its deep dish, and just as you bite into it, you suddenly lock eyes with the woman. She doesn’t immediately respond. You decide to wink. Elda’s face reconfigures into a look of confusion. You swallow. “Somethin’ on my face Elda?”

A pause, then Elda gasps slightly. Her back suddenly straightens, as if someone reinserted the stick that’s so often up her ass. She scowls at you, ears turning slightly pink. Taking advantage of her momentary confusion, you shift the focus of the conversation onto Niels. “So Niels, you gonna be a millionaire any time soon? Or were you already?”

Niels looks at you, slightly dazed, before shaking his head. “Ahhhh, yes, yes, no! No not at all, I mean no. No I’m not on the verge of becoming a millionaire.”

“Yeah man,” continues Markos, clearly glad to have the conversation flowing again, “No rich executives this time. Maybe next drop, right Niels?”
>>
“Yeah…” responds Niels, that dreamy look overtaking him once more. Kid is fucking hopeless. You reach out underneath the low table and give him a little kick. Niels yelps in surprise. Not exactly the manliest reaction. Mentally declaring the cause lost for today, you bury yourself in pizza. Luckily, Tsukino and Markos fill in the conversational void for you, each one relaying the events from their mission.

“Yeah yeah. You would not believe the weird shit they had in the imagineering rooms. Looked like a cross between a hippie’s living room, a kindergarten, and a fucking sex dungeon. Engineers man… So Elda, what happened on your mission?”

Elda looks up at Markos before looking back down at the table. “Nothing. Nothing worth talking about,” she replies softly. Before Markos can needle her for more information, the female merc is on her feet.

“Thank you for inviting me over to your suite, Tsukino. It’s very nice.”

And with that she’s gone out the door.

So there's a money scam I'd like to kick off as soon as we sort things with Elda that involves using our fifteen minutes of fame to earn some cash. Gonna post it. Involves teammates, etc.
>>
>>30022254
Ouch, so it was basically just a "massacre non-combatants" mission. I guess I can see why she'd be a bit shaken up.
>>
>>30022315
Yeah, no kidding. That's why I voted not to take it.
I mean, even if Lawyers are soulless assholes... still
>>
Money idea is basically

>have Niels send footage of fight with Dreads to corporate news agencies and maybe post it on some online communities and high-traffick sites
>buy stock in the companies that made our weapons, armor, and implants, not to mention Kilburne, our employer, and Tsukino's dad's company
>wait a couple hours
>have a press conference after the buzz has built up, subtly play up how important it was to come prepared with good training and equipment and the fine team at your company, underscore Sushi's dad fought dreads before and trained her, what a badass, etc
>blackmail Kilburne into not grumbling about paying the miners we saved comp by announcing how great they are because you've recently heard they're going to take care of those brave workers, the miners are the real heroes anyway - good press will help their stock recover and maybe make them less mad at us/StrikeOut
>wait for stock price to rise
>sell stock at a profit

We can add in various things to help make it better, like letting other rookies in on the attempt with us and buying a stock portfolio together, same stock breakdown for more money - and getting Niels and Elda to work together on managing it - he can find good portfolio management software and she can run the numbers and watch carefully.

Pull out if the portfolio goes below 80% of buy in, that way everyone only loses like a thousand bucks and we can make it up to them by doing for cheap the tech-work that StrikeOut would charge them re-equipping fees for.
>>
>>30022465
So, in brief
>CAPITALISM, HOOOOO!
>>
>>30022465
Before this even starts, we should try and hole up in Sushi's apartment and make that battery Cy looted the plans for while the buzz builds about how we killed a space terrorist with a 250 million credit bounty.

If we hold the press conference at the firing range in our armor with our team in tow, we can endorse it, maybe start a bidding war for the tech to drive up the price or set ourselves up as an independent tech contractor. We've got eleven days on the Brick, might as well build some cool shit.

Announcing that we plan to go after the bounties on dreads with our team will probably get the local layers interested, not to mention the legal departments of our employer and her father's corp. We may not see all of the bounty, but we might see some of it even after the lawyers take their cut, and the news conference might make it easier.

if we say nice shit about them in public and call them an ethical bunch, they'll have a hard time not living up to that. plus raising their stock price might smooth things over between strikeout and those fucking miners.
>>
>>30022666

There’s a few moments of silence at Elda’s sudden departure. Eventually you realize that no one else is about to go after her. Standing up, you brush some crumbs from the delicious deep dish off of your shirt. “Welp, it seems like it falls to me to see what’s upset grump guts,” you walk to the door leading out of Tsukino’s suite. “Should be safer than taking on Dreads… I hope.”

You leave the room before anyone has the chance to protest, and stand out in the station corridor. Some careful listening, you hear footsteps. Seems like Elda is went to the left. You hurry off in that direction, taking care not to step too loudly. Wouldn’t want to spook her after all. You follow your fellow merc through a few winding hallways, never quite catching sight of her. Eventually you turn a corner just in time to see one of the station elevators ping as the door closes. Cursing, you run up to it, staring at the position reader. It stops on K-Level. What the fuck is she doing all the way down there anyway?

You consider the conundrum as you recall the elevator and step inside of it. As it descends, you try to think of what the hell Elda could have gone to all the way down there. As it dings down the Levels, you try to recall what you can of that nearly deserted part of the Brick. K-Level was going to be a housing expansion back in the day, when StrikeOut was contemplating a merger with a fellow merc company. Deal fell through, but not before K-Level was hollowed out and early construction phases began. They managed to finish an observatory area, and started on living quarters…

Where could Elda have gone?

The elevator dings open, flooding a darkened hallway with light. Most people on the Brick can’t access K-Level, only the mercs in case of an infiltration or invasion. StrikeOut doesn’t really bother with lighting the abandoned deck. Or heating it for that matter. You shudder in the chill air as breath fogs around your head. There are two ways you can go from here.

>>
>>30023078
We are only buying their stock to resell it a little later.

Who cares if they are cunt? Business is business.
>>
>>30023026
Remember that the press conference is an attempt to bump up stock values of everyone we mention by providing fame and free advertising.

We praise them in the press conference, which gives their stock value and thus improves their bottom line. This also makes it hard for them to be dicks in the near future because the way we'll praise them will be all like 'I just heard that those guys are paying full compensation to their workers, sounds like good corporate ethics to me' and next time they act up and someone hears about it they'll have to explain their shit, which will hurt their public image.

But, they were mad at our whole team and by extension our company for increasing costs for them. We give them a chance to bump up stock value and recover money because of our caper, they might get less mad at StrikeOut as a whole and that keeps our coworkers and the boss happy because that prevents decreasing the company's client list and reputation in the market as not bad for the contracting corp's bottom line.

>I don't care about your butthurt
Rather, no need to apologize, I'm not mad about your butthurt

As for taking bread from StrikeOut's table, Kilbourne complaining loudly about our team's costs is something that we want to prevent. Other corps might hear about it, and StrikeOut needs a reputation that works for them to get more jobs. Our coworkers don't need reputations as creators of extraneous costs.
>>
>>30023172
>>30023151
NOW I get it. Thanks.

Still, I don't think buying stock from a corp and saying they're the shit is going to help. We might not even be able to buy enough to be noticeable on a galactic scale to alter opinions.

I'm gonna have to agree. I doubt one merc's opinion will change the stock price enough to be profitable without buying huge amounts of it.

Although you think the abandoned housing area is mad creepy and thematic, perfect for ghost stories and shit like that, you figure that’s probably not what Elda is looking for, whatever that is. You begin to walk down the abandoned corridor that you’re pretty sure leads to the observation deck. The dust, how there even is any you’re not entirely sure, muffled your footsteps as you approach the open area. You consider pinging Elda’s e-glasses to announce your presence, but your network connectivity currently reads at a flat zero. Seems they didn’t even get around to extending the station net down here. A few more turns and there it is.

Man, the view fucking sucks. Sure, there are an asston of stars and what have you, but there really isn’t anything else to recommend it. At least the tram line sometimes runs underneath the local nebula. This piece of shit vista can’t even offer that. Still, at least it’s some light, which is almost blinding of the almost total darkness of the corridor leading up to the room. You take a few steps forward and look around. You can’t see anybody, but you can hear something.

You take a few steps towards the sound, difficult to pinpoint in the echoing chamber. Your footfalls echo loudly. The noise suddenly stops with a startled inhalation. Welp, Elda knows you’re here now. No longer seeing the need to mask your presence, you stride forward, scanning rows of seats. Well, those that are installed anyway.

If we put in 25k and it raises 10% we get 2.5k. That's barely worth the risk of putting 25k in it. Also, there are other factors to consider: how well is the company as a whole doing? You can't expect a press conference by a relative nobody to raise their prices 10%, and you shouldn't invest in a company without thoroughly researching it before hand.

It costs only time to find out, but you're still resisting potential free money with a thousand credit loss.
We lose about twice what we pay for a practice run on the range and less than five percent of mission salary according to this plan.

“Hey.”

Elda doesn’t respond. You take the lack of italian profanity as an implicit greeting. Walking forward, you sit down on the opposite side of the bench seat, leaving enough space between the two so you so that you aren’t at risk for accidental physical contact. Not that you think Elda has cooties or anything. You just don’t want another hospital visit to delay your next drop even more than it already has.

You lean back on the seat, staring out into space. “Pretty shit view, isn’t it?”

A gasping sort of laugh. Not a happy one. False mirth masking actual sorrow. You glance over at Elda just in time to see her bury her face in her knees. Shit. Shit shit shit. Dealing with crying women isn’t something you’re terribly good at. You usually just try to keep the situation from rising in the first place.

“So, uh. You alright Elda?”

Elda raises her head slightly and shoots you a look from the corner of her eye. “What do you think, mona?”

Yeah, pretty obvious answer there. You twiddle your thumbs between your knees. “No, not really.”

C’mon man, gotta think here! You’re beta-ing out around a girl like thirty centimeter shorter than you and without half of your strength augments. Nothing to fear.

“Just wanted to check up on you. After you left so suddenly. From Tsukino’s I mean.”

Elda sniffs. “Am I really that scary, can’t even ask a straight question?”

“Not you in particular. Crying women are generally terrifying.”

A wet laugh. Maybe less faked than the first. In any case Elda raises her head fully off of her knees and rubs some mucous away from underneath her nose. “Ha… nice recovery.”

Before you can say anything else, Elda continues, “But I wasn’t crying during that drop, so ther-”

Her voice peeters out and her head is buried back in her knees once more. Gasping breaths. Ah shit. You’re just here, man. You didn’t put up the job listing. You didn’t make her take it. You weren’t one of those fool suits you presume got in the way of her bullets. So why do you feel so goddamn irrationally guilty?

“Hey, I… I uh. Fuck.”

Words aren’t working out too well it seems. Maybe you should just let her talk about it when she feels up to it? But what if she never does, and it just festers? Fuck. Words are hard. Markos is the smooth one anyway, he’d know what to say right now.

We've got an AK-94 so we can do squad support. Getting proficient with it would be good.

The metalstorm smartgun idea is pretty great, especially if there are smoke or chaff grenades. Or better yet, bullets that can do that in pistol form.

Marking where they are in our hud, GPS tracking style, and then putting a smoke grenade/explosive bullet/flashbang into their midst before shooting at their locations with aim assist would be great.

Switching to a barrel full of flechette bullets instantly by thinking it would also be great.

Reload can be a one-step procedure if we can have a hud interface that puts together the right series of bullets using a little sorter in our back and then using this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Hs4do69ms

Shit. Words aren’t your forte. Best to shut up and fall back on your fail-safe plan. You lean forward, resting your forearms on your knees so that your head is only little bit above Elda’s. Reaching out, you place a hand on her shoulder. Elda immediately looks up eyes wide and startled. You give her a sad smile. She stares at you.

Next thing, her head is buried in your chest and she’s crying. Like really loudly. You figure it doesn’t matter, since K-Level is completely abandoned anyway. Lowering your arm, you give her a one armed hug as she tries to form a cogent sentence. This situation falls much more into your comfort zone. Should’ve gone for the shoulder from the get go. You speak softly. “I take it things went a little too well?”

Elda nods, teeth bared in some sort of grimace. “Ah-ahahah.”

Alright, this you can handle. “Hey, it’s alright. It’s all okay now.”

“Th-there were so many,” Elda gasps, “I… I thought they’d just stick to the principle.”

Hm. Seems even the Ice Bitch of the Alps balks at killing civvies. Looking down at her, you can’t help but feel that the moniker was a bit of a misnomer. Premature at best. “I… I… There was screaming…”

Elda pushes herself away from your chest, her expression a mixture of fury and guilt. “That bitch was laughing. Laughing. And I could’ve stopped her. I had so many shots.”

Elda looks up at you, her brown eyes open wide. Much wider than their usual derisive squint. “I could’ve stopped them…”

Head back into chest. Like some sort of pectoral seeking missile.

Hello there, FallGuy. I have a minor point to bring up with you concerning your writing, but first I would like to say that I absolutely love your quest and your writing. Your characters, while some may be adhering to certain tropes, do not feel hamfisted and shoddily put together. I can get a sense of camaraderie from all the merc characters you've presented us, as well as a glance into the position of a merc in the social structure of their little asteroid city. I an fascinated with your setting and wish to explore more of it as you continue to write.

Now, on to my tiny bit of constructive criticism: when you are writing dialogue, you have a tendency of putting a character's laughter inside of the quotes, rather than having it described. I understand why you would feel it is appropriate to do so, but you Must keep in mind how awkward it can be interpreted. When you write laughter as "Hahahahaha," the initial thought for myself, and for many other people (Although not all) that the character is saying each individual "Ha," rather than busting up into laughter.

If you were to remove any "haha"s or the like from your writing and instead described the laughter, you will find that you can portray a wider range of emotions and actions.

For example:
"Hahaha, dude, you just totally stepped in dogshit." Said Carl.
vs
"Dude, you just totally stepped in dogshit." Carl said between bouts of hysterical laughter.
or
"Dude, you just totally stepped in dogshit." Carl said while snickering derisively.

I do hope that you do not take offense to my criticism, and you are free to ignore it if you so wish. I simply want to see this quest become the best it can possibly be.

Seeing 'haha' every time someone talks is a bit repetitive, but so is 'you laugh' next to every line.

Frankly the nervous laughter isn't that great, it's just what people write to keep things flowing as space-filler. It's kinda weak language.

Better not say anything. You double down on the physical contact approach though, transferring her to a full bear hug. You whisper some platitudes as Elda transforms her feelings about the mission into two growing wet patches on your shirt. After another God knows how many minutes of this, Elda pushes away from you again. You let your arms fall to the side.

Elda stares at you, sniffing.

“Feeling a bit better now?”

Elda bites the inside of her mouth. Then she punches you in the shoulder and stands up.

“Hey. Ow.”

You get up and start to follow her. Suddenly Elda’s turned back around, facing you. She looks angry and flustered. You take a step back as she storms towards you. A hard poke. This time, it actually does hurt a little.

“Not.”

Poke,

“A.”

Poke.

“Word.”

Poke.

You fling your hands up in submission. “Lips are sealed.”

Elda snorts and storms off towards the elevator. Just as she’s about the exit the observatory, she stops, turning back around slowly. She whispers a single word, then quickly takes her leave of the half finished observatory.

You return to your earlier seat, and go back to contemplating space. Maybe this place isn’t so bad after all. The view isn’t that terrible, really. And the lack of a despondent co-worker does wonders for the mood. Hardly even notice the bare support struts now. You lean back and smile as Elda’s final whisper echos in your ear.

“Thanks.”
>>
After what must have been nearly an hour of contemplation, you notice that the two tear stains on your shirt are fucking freezing in this icebox. Shivering slightly, you take your own leave of the observatory. Standing in the elevator, you grimace at the deluge of pings and comm-requests that piled up while you were off the grid. Sorting through them, you manage to find only a few from people you actually know. Niels down at the range, Markos and Cy in the armory, and Choi Lei? What does a senior merc want to do with a rookie like you?

>>30025996
That is true, I agree with you, but describing laughter can be implemented in various ways, while "Haha"s are just that. So you laugh is SLIGHTLY stronger, with greater malleablity and the potential to really add to a person's writing.

Thanks for the input, Observer. I'm still improving on my writing, so advice is absolutely welcome!

Choi Lei. The stout demolitions expert might be the jolly sort, but you’re not about to risk snubbing a senior merc. As the elevator shoots up to C-Level and your living quarters you send a quick message to Markos and Cy.

>Hey dumbasses. Don’t shell out for the equipping fees at the armory, I’ve got ya covered.

You decide to forward it to Niels as well. Let him know you haven’t forgotten about him. Need to spend some more time with the guy. As you walk up to your quarters, you are surprised to see some papers clamped onto your door with magnets. Looking around, you see no one else’s doors similarly decorated. You pull the paper off, and read it as you step into your quarters.

Dear Mr. Kostov,

I saw what you did to that Dreads character. It was absolutely brutal! I’ve never seen such a show of force, like… ever! You are such an unbelievable man amongst men. I’ve got some VERY nice… outfits let’s just say, and I’d be thrilled if you came around to check them out. Maybe, if I’m really naughty you can give an uppity feminine sub an encore of that fight? I promise to be a good little bitch for you you can beat me dow-

You crumple up the letter and throw it away, deeply unsettled. Was it the rapidly worsening grammar? The fact that whoever left this note knew where you lived? No. The more you think about it, the more sure you are that it was the phrase “feminine sub”.
>>
Shuddering slightly, you put on a new shirt before sending Choi Lei a comm request. A few moments, then the channel opens.

“Ivan! Seems like I chose the wrong rookie to mentor on that Kagokushi drop.”

“Hey Sir, what’s up?”

“It’s freaking Take Out to you, you crazy sonnovabitch. I’m in the Bar with some fellow mercs and Maxim, who just got knocked down to “the Other Russian” status. You gotta come up here man, it’s a fucking scene.”

“Yeah,” you ask, grinning in spite of yourself.

“Absolutely. They’ve got the damned fight running on repeat on the Bar screens man! Bob’s taking requests for background music for it too!”

“Oh really? It even managed to impress Bob?”

Choi Lei hoots with laughter over the comm link. “‘Bout as close to impressed as the ol’ bastard can get, I think. Come on up man, drinks on the goddamn house for you my friend!”

“Shit. You’re fucking joking,” Bob never gives out free drinks. Certainly not more than one.

“Well, we don’t know for sure yet, but even if he decides to be a dick about it, shit. Well then, everyone’s gonna want to be the one who bought Ivan Kostov a drink! Quit fiddling with your tampon and haul ass up here!”

With that, the comm link closes. Looking around the room, you consider your options. You really don’t like being in the spotlight that much… but free drinks… that’s a potent argument. And Valkyrie isn’t around, so it’s not like anyone’s gonna assault you on the bar floor this time!

Maybe.

You may be somewhat fame-averse, something that letter only reinforced, but Goddamn if you’re about to turn down free alcohol! Grinning merrily to yourself, you stride out of your quarters, and begin to march off to the Tram line. Which will then take you to the Bar. You’re pleased to see that the Tram is empty, and you take a seat, looking up into space. View’s much better here.

Your moment of solitude is shattered, however, when the Tram stops again and a gaggle of teenagers walk in. From the posturing going on, you can safely assume that none of them are dating each other. You settle back into your seat, turning your attention back to the stars. Doesn’t last long though. A loud gasp. Glancing over at the crowd of teens, your eyes land just in time to see the group of girls convene into a huddle, whispering excitedly. The boys seem nonplussed. The one of them recognizes you. They gather together into their own gender exclusive huddle, muttering angrily.

Snorting to yourself, you happily exit the Tram as it stops outside the Bar. The teens don’t follow. Group date, probably too pure to have fake IDs. Not like it would get them anywhere, but you can remember trying your luck, back in the day. You walk past the bouncers and into the Bar just in time to see you stand up from your impact with the wall. People cheer. Grinning sheepishly, you ping Choi Lei.

>Take Out, where are you? Just got here.

>Who the fuck said you could call me Take Out, rookie? I’ll fucking wreck you

You begin composing an apology as another ping comes in.

>Just fucking with ya! I’m waving at you right now.
>>
You look around, and sure enough, there’s Choi Lei. He’s standing up at a table in the corner, waving at you. You wade through the sea of people, taking care to keep your head low. Amazingly enough, you manage to squirm your way to the table, where Choi Lei invites you to sit down. The mercs surrounding you exchange greetings, all smiles and laughter. Except for Maxim. He frowns at you drunkenly.

“So, this is the man who is replacing me as the Russian.”

“Hey Maxim,” you reply, barely managing to conceal the nervous tremor in your voice. Maxim is a big fucking guy.

“I am not thinking I approve of this,” mutters Maxim darkly. You quail a bit as the russian gets out of his chair, towering over you. As you prepare for evasive maneuvers Choi Lei intervenes, shoving a balloon glass of golden rum into Maxim’s face. “It ain’t vodka but-” Maxim sits back down, slurping happily. “Yeah figured. Here, take a beer rookie. Just pinged the waitress, so think of something good.”

As you down the cheap swill you wonder who the hell ordered such crap. You like Beer, but only if it’s good. Still, free is free. A woman sitting across the table from you notices your slightly sour expression.

“Damnit Take Out, why’d you give Ivan your tankard of Chinese knock off piss? You want him to write us all off as classless savages?”

“Maale Stoutbeer is a classic Martian. Don’t fuckin knock it.”

Martian shakes her head before returning her attention to you. “Marlena Redskies. Martian to these animals. How’s it hanging? Rolling in that sweet bounty dosh yet?”

“Not yet,” you answer, trying to suppress the Stoutbeer’s aftertaste. “They’ve got all sorts of bullshit hoops I need to jump through first.”
>>
Maxim burps. You can see how he earned the moniker Belch. “They are always saying one reward, but at the end of the day, there is never as much cash as they claim.”

Choi Lei nods glumly. “Drunken wisdom. The only kind you’ll get from Belch.”

As the mercs bemoan their cheap corporate contractors, the waitress walks up behind you. She looks worn down, but upon seeing you, her face brightens. “Why look here, the hero of the hour. When these borderline alcoholics were claiming you’d show up, I figured they were just making shit up again. What can I get for ya?”

“Uh, a Voytek’s Bear Bomber.”

“Comin’ right up,” the waitress responds, winking at you. You turn your attention back to the table. The conversation seems to have lulled somewhat.

“You know, my fucking ass on the screens and all that shit. Fifteen minutes of fame, yeah?”

Marlena answers that question. “Nope. Not at all. You got some big time attention for that, Ivan. I’ve never been as well known as you are right now.”

“Damn. And here I was, hoping somebody could give me some advice for dealing with creepy fan mail.”

Marlena’s eyebrows shoot up. “Fan mail?”

You nod. “A fucking- and I am shitting you not here- a fucking handwritten note pinned to my goddamn door. Something about wanting me to check out their lingerie collection or something and dominate them.”

Marlena and Choi Lei both snort, spurting alcohol out of their noses. As they groan in pain, one of the other mercs at the table leans forward, sticking his pinky into the air. “What’re you afraid of, Kostov? Performance anxiety?”

“Pretty sure it was from a dude.”

The merc looks taken aback. Marlena and Choi Lei start spluttering again. “So anyway,” you continue, “I think it’s best if I put my fifteen minutes to good use. Maxim, vodka on me?”

The russian looks at you with hooded eyes. Then his expression brightens. “Da!”
>>
“That’s the spirit Maxim. Besides I’m only a quarter Russian. How the hell can I replace our friendly neighborhood vodka drinking giant with that pittance of the motherland flowing through my veins?”

Maxim roars with laughter and slaps you on the back. Ow. “This guy! I am liking this guy more and more!”

Marlena sighs. “Now you’ve gone and done it Ivan. The Millenium Man is gonna have to get Maxim a new liver after tonight.”

Marlena Redskies… Marlena Redskies… That’s a Martian name. Unusual. Rare. You’ve seen it before. But where? Then it clicks. She was on the drop with Elda. Could she be the one Elda was talking about? She doesn’t seem the sociopathic type. There was another slot open for that drop, maybe it was someone else?

“Alright, alright. I know Take Out does explosions, he taught me everything I know about them. Probably why command won’t let me anywhere near anything bigger than a firecracker.”

Choi Lei shrugs, grinning. “And I know Maxim does heavy weapons of some flavor-”

“Rapid fire weaponry and flame throwers.”

“Alright, I figured. But that leave me wondering about you, Redskies. What do you specialize in?”

Marlena chortles. “What? This a merc’s version of asking a lady what her sign is? I’ll tell you, Ivan. Shotguns. Shotguns and grenade launchers. Somehow, I seem to fall back on those all the time.”

Choi Lei grunts his assent. Mars is unique in Human Space. Although owned by a corporation, it is a co-op, where all members have an equal say and an equal claim to profits. You never heard too much about Mars. People don’t really visit it unless they absolutely must.

“I fucking bailed on the red shit orb when I was fourteen, Ivan. Best Gaiadamned decision I ever made, to use a Martian turn of phrase.”

“Is it that bad,” you ask, somewhat shocked. You never realized that things were that extreme.

“Fuck yeah,” sighs Marlena. “Kept us off the net, said it spread negative energy among the people. You spoke up, you said anything that wasn’t approved by the thought police… unsafe environment, ten years of reeducation for your ass.”
>>
“Jesus.”

“I know,” concurs Marlena. “Now though… let’s just say I’ve got new ways to express my discontent with those red desert fuckers.”

Choi Lei quickly cuts into the conversation. “Moving on from Martian’s personal vendetta, let’s get back to the real gossip. Ivan, you got flung against a wall. How bad was it?”

You rotate your arm. “Not great. I’m on ice for eleven goddamn days until I can register for a drop.”

“Aw damn. Fucking called it. Pay up Take Out,” crows Marlena as Choi Lei groans. “Now you gotta tell me rookie, what’s taken you out of commission?”

“It was just a shoulder fracture.”

Marlena howls with mirth as Maxim grunts his dismay. “I am the best. Don’t you two forget it.”

“After that blow to my balance,” mutters Choi Lei, “Only way that’ll happen is if I end up repressing the memory.”

“So anyway, do you guys have any suggestions to keep me from spending so much time out of action? Like augments or something?”

“Yeah, dumbass. Augment your common sense. By all rights, you should be dead after fighting Dreads.”

Then Maxim rumbles, his speech slow but sure. “Skeletal upgrades. And muscle augments. These are best way to prevent damage from ever happening.”

“Alright, alright. Cool.”

The waitress is finally back with your Bear Blaster. You take the dark brown drink from her with a smile, and start to down it.

As much as that made me chuckle anon, we've been using 3d10 for the entirety of DAQ. However, I will keep it in mind for new players.

You smirk. A lesser man might have some second thoughts about downing a potent mixer like Voytek’s Bear Blaster, but you are no lesser man. You are Ivan Kostov, and you buried Dreads. You knock back the drink like a champ, earning an approving whistle from Marlena as you chug. Slapping the beverage back down onto the table, you grin. “That’s good. I think I’ll get me another. Bear Blaster, anyone?”

Marlena slams her own drink back onto the table. The skinny stem of the martini glass snaps from the impact. “Oops,” grins Marlena. “I think I’ll take you up on the offer, Ivan.”

The two of you lock eyes as a pair of Bear Blasters appear in front of each of you. You know what must be done. Seizing the glass, you begin chugging the brown liquid once more. It’s a race. A challenge. And you shall not fail before it. Your throat opens, allowing more of the potent drink to slide into your stomach.

You slap your glass down, a second before Marlena. “I. Win.”

“Never try to outdrink a Russian,” intones Maxim.

Marlena wipes her mouth on the back of her hand. “How about fighting a Russian?”

And with that, she hits Maxim in the jaw with a right hook. With surprising agility for one of his size, Maxim is back on his feet, sleepiness gone from his eyes. “Let’s go.”
>>
Choi Lei yanks you clear of the warzone as the two go at it, punching and kicking. You stand up, eager to join them, when the double Bear Blasters hits you at once. You wobble a bit on your feet. “Damn, I don’t feel so great…”

“C’mon, kid,” mutters Choi Lei as he drags you back from the two tussling mercs. “Don’t think the Doc will approve of you getting into a bar fight right after he fixed you up.”

You look around, amused by the bouncers, who nervously stand around the two mercs, mostly trying to keep the un-augmented patrons clear. Just as you and Choi exit the bar, you can hear screams as Bob moves in to break up the fight. Hey, you might not have gotten laid, but at least this time you’re not paying for bar repairs. You figure that’s a fair enough trade.

Alright, that's the last update for tonight, I'm running out of steam, and I think it shows.

Thanks for being here for DAQ today. I was concerned about the thread today, but all in all it was a great time, as always.

Next thread is on thursday. See you then!

And, I am willing to take questions, if you all have any.

>>30030937
Only question I have is what is up next on our agenda? I imagine helping out our buddies and junk.

I really look forward to when V gets back and starts hunting us. It'll be like a scene from The Most Dangerous Game. Yes it is hot.
>>
>>30031143

You guys still need to see Cy to collect your reward

Thanks for being a Champ Fall Guy
>>
