Sighing inwardly you simply set the kettle on the stove so at least you’ll have something to get you through this interruption of your sleep.

“Hello,” Toulour tries again.

“I'm already awake, and you're here. Might as well get this over with,” you reply as you look for tea.

“Right then I’ll make it quick. We at THIEF welcome you as an Independent Associate. As someone of your station, you have access to our information networks for a price. The only thing we ask in return is that you register your future heists with me so that we don’t have a conflict of interest. Hell we may be able to find people interested in helping you. I will be your primary contact for THIEF. Here is my number.”

He places a card on the table as you serve him and yourself some tea.

“Thank you,” he replies and eagerly takes a sip, “Not bad. Anyway, don’t lose that number. It’s the only way you’ll be able to contact me as an Associate of THIEF. Once you do call that number we’ll arrange a meet and the number will expire. Though it really doesn’t need to be said, please do not go to the authorities to report us. All you do is waste everyone’s time and end up on the blacklist. Anyway that’s about all I have to say, any questions or should I let you get back to your sleep?”

Well you start with the most obvious one.

“THIEF, really?”

“Believe me it could be worse,” he answers calmly, “we could be named ITEM or GROUP or something similarly stupid. We take pride in what we are and what we do.”

“Just to be sure, when you say we, you mean there’s more than just you who’s part of THIEF right?”

“Naturally, THIEF is a network of professionals who find it in their contracts to acquire things that many find difficult. I am merely one of the dozen or so coordinators that ensure our vast network is resilient and reliable as can be.”

“So what about conflicts of interest and do I have to do contracts for you?”

“Like I said, you are an Independent Associate,” Toulour nudges his glasses up a bit, “As long as you notify us of a potential target we will ensure another associate does as little to interfere as possible. Your last job at Kaiou University, sloppy and badly planned as it was, nearly ruined another member. We try to make sure such things happen as rarely as possible but not even we can track everyone. As for contracts you don’t have to worry about that unless you wish for membership and that’s probably not going to be considered until the whole Big Spider issue is dealt with.”

He doesn’t mention by whom.

“Anyways that’s enough of me taking up your night,” he gulps down the tea and makes for the window, “By the way, you should talk to Konori Mii. She might know Big Spider. It's a freebie. If you have questions just call, tomorrow.”

Brewing more tea and making some oh so delicious French toast, you setting in for a slow morning. Heck, even the birds are landing on your balcony railings for no real reason and breaking in to song. With your posture set to comfortable you continue to make your way through Minds, Memories and Multi-tasking. A lot more detail is spent on certain stimuli that humans receive, especially reflexive actions what they actually mean. You get a nice two hours of reading done before your phone ringing interrupts.

It’s Asuka.

“Good morning Kyril,” she greets without preamble, “My schedule has somehow managed to free itself of further obligations today. I am thinking we could have lunch together to discuss important matters.”

You’re not sure you have a choice to refuse.

“And we do not then I am thinking we could at least talk about it, lest I let The Dean do most of the talking when next meet.”

“Yeah sure,” you agree hastily.

“Splendid, while I am not averse to you whisking me away I must admit that my underclassmen and the like are notorious gossips. The attention is nice but it does become tiring after a fashion. Do not concern yourself with the food for I shall be bringing some with me.”

You decide on a change of pace. Most of your dates, as you recall, have taken place mostly outside so it’d be nice to stay indoors for once. There was no way you’d be able to enjoy her company in her room given the fearsome beast that guarded her dormitories so you settle inviting her over. You do your best to tidy up the place before she arrives.

The time is now lunch, the weather is clean and the date remains the same.

Asuka arrives with a small basket of edibles, along with The Dean and Jyggalag. You’re not sure how you remembered the black rabbit plushie’s name so vividly. You do however remember that she takes tea on its own. Her spread is consists of some sandwiches, lamenting on how there is little way for her to prepare rice or more complicated heated dishes without gaining access the kitchens proper. Your offer to let her borrow yours is met with a grand smile.

“So tell me Kyril, I recall a heartfelt confession before you engaged in battle a few days ago, about our dear friend Tamezou.”

“Oh that?” you remember it vaguely, “Well he didn’t have very nice things to say about you so I broke his jaw.”

“An expedient solution to defend my honour,” she was clearly amused, “I take it he is part of a bigger problem.”

“Yeah, but I do have a lead. Konori Mii, heard of her?”

“Yes, but I’m afraid we’re going to have to see Shirai for more information on her superior.”

Wait she was Judgement? You didn’t actually need to see Shirai then.

“Ah yes, while I do not directly report to her she is the senior officer at my branch, we will be in the office for a while yet if you wish to drop by for a chat.”

Hanging up only makes Asuka gaze more intense.

“Kaoru is a female name,” she says, “Is she someone I should know?”

“If you don’t want to deal with Shirai.”

“I wonder how exactly you came to know her,” she continues, “Not that I am explicitly against your acquaintance with her or anything. I am simply curious.”

You tell of your first encounter with her, and Shirai. It placated her somewhat to know where Aneue kept her booze.

“I see, well then, daylight is burning so we should make due haste to interrogate this Konori Mii,” Asuka gets up, “I shall be leaving the basket with you so that you may arrange for a suitable picnic in the future. Be grateful.”

You have the slightest feeling she hasn’t completely cleared her foul mood. Partway through the silent walk to Judgement Branch Office 177, Asuka speaks up again.

“Before we arrive I wish to know how you are going to conduct this interrogation,” she starts, “Or should I be the one to do the information gathering? She is Judgement and she will have a bit of a backbone, most of them do. It is not necessary for us to break her but it is the most expedient. This is assuming that we could even get her alone. I suspect the other one would have to run interference.”

Leave it to her to consider practicalities while you were wondering if she felt better now. Well you could handle Kaoru for sure. You had topic to distract her with and all though you’re not sure you want Asuka to just walk all over your information source. She was just as likely to pick a fight with Kaoru you think.

You were the one who asked for her so you really should be the person who talked to her. That and you trusted that Asuka to not engage Kaoru in a duel to the death with live blades. You of course tell her so and are rewarded with a complicated expression. You hoped that there wouldn’t be that many people there and to your knowledge, Branch Office 177 was all females. Definitely would not like to play up the image of getting in trouble just to attract their beautiful attention. Of all the ones you knew in person, none of them actually your type. Or it could be your bias showing seeing as you already had Asuka.

Regardless there were only Kaoru and Konori Mii there. The former was helping the latter square away some paper work given the latter had been out of the office for a few days. Coming out with the office, you find that the office is still in a good semblance of order. Nobody has tried to kill anyone yet. Kaoru and Asuka were merrily chatting away over a book. As soon as they notice you stepping out they abruptly cease conversation. Kaoru takes the book and stuffs it in her shirt.

“Kaoru are you using books as body armour again?” Konori asks.

“Kyril are there any hobbies you would like to tell me about?” Asuka asks.

You finish as Jaswinder Kaur come out with plates of and bowls of what you think is Indian curry. The Sikh minds it little as you say grace as quick as you can and dig in. You could have done with less spice but you suppose it is simply your western tongue at work here. Jaswinder makes small talk with you, suspiciously also not caring that you’ve read her books. In fact she finds your actions admirable. She offers to teach you how to read the picture book.
