Welcome to Academy City. The time is afternoon, the weather is fine, and the date is August 7.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you had decided to check in with your boss. Your boss deserved to know what you weren’t at your best, given that you’re bound to a wheelchair on doctor’s orders. Accompanying you and ensuring that your doctor’s orders are being followed is Asuka, your girlfriend. She isn’t exactly happy that you didn’t agree to go home and rest up.

The junkyard office felt different than the last time you came in. It must have been the bullet holes out front and the boarded up windows. Your boss, Number 3, is sitting inside going through some papers and what is clearly a box of shotgun ammunition on his table. He was frowning. The interior wasn’t savaged too badly but some bullets had found their way inside and savaged an odd shelf or two.

“Oh hey,” your boss greets with a smile, “I wanna say you missed some excitement but I think you got plenty of your own. So up for some work or?”

You decided to put a few hours in anyways now that you were here.

“Great,” Number 3 exclaimed and rose from the chair.

“For the record, his doctor has forbidden him from doing anything more physically strenuous than breathing,” Asuka chose that moment to speak.

“Well duh, I mean, yeah of course, he’s going to do my boring paperwork for me, miss,” your boss obviously had never met your girlfriend before.

“Kudou Asuka,” she supplied, “His girlfriend.”

“Oh, right,” he eyed you with a grin, “He can write though?”

You scoffed at the notion that you were in anyway incapable whilst wheelchair bound. You pushed your chair to the desk and picked up a pen solely with your Ability. The form in front of you was some insurance and Anti-Skill related paperwork.

“So what exactly happened here?” you asked him.

“A drive-by,” your boss answered as he looked through some cabinets, “Pure luck I dropped my pen when they opened up.”

“You know, with all the weird stuff that’s been happening around here I think someone’s trying to put you out of business,” you told him.

“Yeah, sounds about right,” he shrugged, “Dunno who though, way too many reasons to nail it down. If this keeps up you might actually end up without a job and me in a box.”

Number 3 kept wandering about the office looking for something. As for Asuka, she found a place to sit as her eyes wandered the room.

>>
>>31431186
“But why exactly would someone want to be a junkyard owner?” Asuka wondered.

“The pay’s good for one,” your boss found a file and plopped it down in front of you, “A lot of tech gets dumped here. Even if it’s trash we’re about twenty, thirty years ahead. Selling it’s pretty profitable though every buyer and item gets vetted first. Other than that we do some recycling and sell it back to the city. Your boyfriend here bought a scooter off me.”

It’s apparently a bunch of schematics.

“For me, I just use it to fund my own space programme,” Number 3 continued, “How’s the scooter by the way?”

“Yes, I would like to know more about this, ‘scooter’,” Asuka agreed.

“Sold it,” you answered as you finished the fourth form.

“That space programme isn’t the reason behind the attacks are they?” you asked.

“Course not,” he denied it out of hand, “It’s my hobby, not a business. Don’t have any patents or anything that’s worth killing over.”

“So what are the rockets out back for?”

“To get them flying, proof of concept you know?”

“A shame then,” Asuka spoke, “I have some connections with the aerospace industry who would love to make your acquaintance.”

“Hah if you’re talking about the Kongou Aviation then forget it,” Number 3 answered her, “I figured I could do more on my own than without their ‘shareholders’ breathing down my neck. Besides already did my grand tour of the space agencies and all of them were too busy bitching about Tree Diagram than actually getting in to space again.”

“Some parties will be interested regardless but far be it from me to offer what is not required,” Asuka concluded.

Number 3 only shrugged again and got back to his blueprints of something or another. The forms took several hours for you to fill out correctly as your boss wandered in and out of the office. Asuka continued to stay seated though she was now sipping on tea that Number 3 had offered the both of you. The sun was just setting as you finished up.

“Well I’ll let you know if I hear anything,” were your parting words.

“Thanks but good luck trying to find out who’s after me,” your boss returned.

The time is now evening, the weather is cooling and the date remains unchanged.

You were under your own power as the both of you walked back to School District 7. Thus Asuka was surprised when you started heading towards her dormitory.

“Really Kyril?” she seemed amused, “Already chafing to get out from under my thumb?”

“Well you do have curfew,” you replied.

“Exceptions can be made,” she countered.

“You honestly think that Aneue would make an exception?”

Now you were the one honestly amused.

“Besides she probably wants a word with me anyway,” you said.

“That is a rather roundabout way of saying you want to see her,” Asuka suggested.

You don’t dignify her implication with a reaction at all. Aneue was not waiting by the gate, as you feared however. With a short goodnight kiss, Asuka left you on your own for the rest of the evening. Now you could actually conduct private business without worry. Sivan would have been pretty hard to explain. You remembered that he was going to further elaborate on the job that Kaoru asked you to do. That and you hadn’t seen him since that night he fought with Teacher. Kaoru had to help him limp away from that encounter so you’re not sure what condition he was in. Hopefully it was better than yours. However it wasn’t too late that you couldn’t visit Mum, or even call her.

You headed off to Cypress Park. There was no good reason to leave Mum hanging like that with worry. If you had working hours then you could easily say that it was way past them. As you drew closer you remembered how she often waited for you to show up whenever you still lived there. However at this time of night she probably wouldn’t be, the kids were probably getting ready for bed if you remember correctly. The gate and doors weren’t locked yet though they probably would be soon.

The familiar hustle and bustle of the orphanage was very familiar to you. Most of the building was empty so you concluded that they were having dinner right now. As you wheeled yourself in to the dining room everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at you. The silence was broken by Daigo who promptly emerged from kitchen in reaction to the silence your arrival resulted in.

“Good evening Kyril, would you care for some dinner?” he asked.

“Sure why not,” you pretended that it wasn’t a big deal.

You caught Mum smiling as you wheeled yourself to one end of table and made a show of using your telekinesis to move chairs out of the way. For a free dinner, you could have done worse. Most of the kids still remembered you and were clamouring for a story behind the wheelchair.

"I was minding my own business, when suddenly, a band of vagabonds harass me for money.

'Nay', I told them, but they did not relent, so I tossed them aside and punched them down until they were docile. Afterwards, I questioned one of them about why they had to go about robbing people. And he told me:

'Because the troll wants it for his wedding.' Naturally, I inquired about this troll and where to find him. 'Janitor's closet, on floor 4 of the Lotus Apartment complex. Knock three times and whistle the tune from Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.'

After knocking out the unfortunate fool, I went to that janitor's closet and rapped upon his door. When it opened, I found myself face to face with, not a janitor or his equipment, but a disgusting and brutish monster, in a room far too large for a closet.

A dingy and dirty place that it was, it also happened to be residence for one pretty looking elf, who seemed very much annoyed about her surroundings, tapping her feet in irritation from the supposedly delayed wedding ceremony, and the fact that she was wearing a rather moldy wedding dress.

Still, I was undaunted and confronted the brute about his underlings. He was dismissive of me and proceeded to insult my mother, whereupon I lashed out at him and we tumbled on the ground kicking and punching one another.

At this point, the elf had had enough of the bicker and decided that she was done with the wedding and decided to leave, but not before tossing us both out of the 4th story window.

And that, children, is how I came to be in a wheelchair."

Kids were probably looking for something entertaining and you didn’t think something with a lesson would entertain. Then again you didn’t really have a story off the top of your head so you’ll just make do with what you had. Hell this might be the only time your story might have had more than just a grain of truth to it.

“I got in to a fight with a vampire,” you declared boastfully.

“No way!”

“Vampires don’t exist.”

“What’s a vampire?”

Those were the most common kind of reactions. It was also predictable.

“Vampires exist, it’s a true,” you continued, “They’re dangerous bloodsucking monsters stalk the night.”

“More dangerous than a Level 5?”

“More dangerous than a Level 5,” you nodded, “He could control ice and turn the street to water. He had long sharp fangs and claws in his hands and moved so fast he might as well be a teleporter. I’d show what he did to me with them but I don’t think Mum would let me.”

“Wait if they’re so dangerous then how did you beat it?” one of the boys asked.

“Because I didn’t,” you admitted, “The vampire totally kicked my butt. I was saved by an old man with a ring of onion around his neck. He told me to not wander out at night because that’s when the vampires come out. Then he used brandished a Christian cross and summoned up holy fire to burn it away.”

The conclusion of your tale was met with mixed responses, some booing some in awe. A few that you had pegged as the sharper ones seemed to be in thought.

“Ok I might have gotten in to a fight I shouldn’t have,” you answer, “but an old man really did save me. It was a learning experience.”

She sagged in relief.

“I was so worried,” she didn’t let go, “I was so worried when they told me.”

Mum hugged you tighter until you could hear her sniffling slightly. Was she crying?

“I’m sorry Mum.”

“You know I always worry. Honestly I was shocked when I found out you were involved in a case with a murderer,” she spoke unevenly, “But I knew you had nothing to do with that. Not my Kyril. I hoped it would have been the end of that but then you.”

She trailed off as she slumped forward. You didn’t mind the weight and the pain it was causing. Then you noticed that she was warmer than usual.

“Mum?”

It only looked like she fell asleep but she was breathing hard.

“Mum?” you tried again.

Her temperature was definitely hotter than yours. It looked like she was running a fever though you had no idea given how she acted over dinner. You never recalled a time when she fell ill. Whether this was because of you or something else it, if you hadn’t been there she might have taken a nasty fall from fainting like this.

Daigo managed to bring her to bed shortly and asked whether you wished to stay the night.

If there was one thing you didn’t want to do today was to leave Mum’s side. She’s looked after you for long enough. It’s time you looked after her, if only for a little bit. She’d always looked like she’d be there and perhaps you took that for granted. Now that you’ve had a good look you realised that she was old, well and truly old. It must have been tiring, looking after so many children at once, but she soldiered on regardless. She never took a vacation day either or so Daigo had told you.

Tonight however, after Daigo had locked up and gone home, it was you pulling the night shift instead of Mum. The children would at some point or another wake up for whatever reason and you had to be there for them in her stead. You stayed close and left her door open as you watched over her. With no immediate problems your mind turns to the other matters. How was this going to affect your job with Kaoru? It wasn’t too late so she’ll probably be awake if you called now. Or maybe you could call home. Sivan should have enough sense to be able to operate a phone. You had a feeling the job was rather time sensitive.

Moving to another private part of the building you phoned Kaoru. You weren’t going to call home and hope Sivan was there. Given the time of night he probably wasn’t even there if he was out and about. It takes a while but she does pick up eventually.

“Torikov-san, to what do I owe the pleasure of this call?” she greeted, “I would assume that Sivan has filled you in, have you reconsidered?”

“No, it’s not that, I haven’t talked to him yet. I had a family emergency,” you think that was the best way to describe it, “Could you just give me the details about the job instead?”

“I see, that’s commendable, family is important after all. Very well, tomorrow night, we shall seek to recover a package from an alchemist. He has taken up residence in Misawa Cram School in School District 17. I trust you are familiar with it?”

“Never heard of it.”

“Regardless, we’ll need the floor plan, if possible with mundane security measures and we’ll go from there.”

“Right so I should be able to get that done tomorrow,” you filed the task away, “You don’t need anything else?”

“Perhaps a more secure means of communication, we should be able to handle everything else on our end.”

“Alright then, that stuff isn’t too hard to find, I’ll call you later tomorrow perhaps?”

“Yes, good night.”

As you stepped, rather wheeled, out of the office you heard movement. Sound carried farther at night given that people tended to be asleep at the time. Of course you investigated, making sure the little ones were well. It was one of the older girls going to the bathroom and you let her return to bed without incident. Nothing disturbed your silent vigil over Mum throughout the night.

The time is now morning, the weather is fine and the date is now August 8.

You were well aware that you had fallen asleep at some point last night. The blanket draped over your wheelchair and the incredibly uncomfortable pain of your wounds was plenty evidence. Quickly popping a pill, you headed out and found Mum warming up breakfast. Daigo had probably foreseen this and had prepared everything beforehand.

“Oh Kyril, good morning and thank you for last night,” Mum coughs lightly, “I know you don’t like it when I ask you to look after your younger siblings.”

Of course she’d be out and about as if that fainting spell never happened. It doesn’t look like she’s completely fine but then again you weren’t exactly taking care of yourself either. Convincing her to take the day off completely might be for the best but would be pretty difficult. It might be easier to if you just lightened her workload. Then again you had other responsibilities.

“It’s okay Mum,” you replied, “but you really should take the day off.”

“I can at least do this much,” she argued.

“Mum, you talk about worrying about me but last night had me worrying about you.”

“I suppose I could take it easy for a little bit,” she conceded only that much, “But that’s only when the volunteers show up.”

With that done, the two of you get to making sure the kids wake up, the tables are set and the food is served. From the perspective as a child who had grown up here, you knew the schedule practically by heart. After breakfast, the older kids went to school and the younger ones did their pre-schooling here. There was a time for some recess in between breakfast and lunch. Then there was a bit of time allocated for a nap before the older kids returned from school. Late afternoon was basically free time and most of them chose to play in the new playground, continuing the grand tradition of procrastinating on homework.

Of course on the administrative side, which you were now discovering, there was much more work to be done. Dishes for one, along with briefing in the volunteers and making sure the young ones don’t get in to trouble. Most of the volunteers were teachers for the pre-school classes anyway so thankfully you didn’t have to step in there. Daigo apparently only showed up in the afternoon since he taught at Sakugawa during the day.

While the kids were in class, Mum took a much needed rest and you had a bit of time for yourself. Now would be a great time to get some work done, and the first order of business was to acquire a map of Misawa Cram School. You could think of a few people who could help you with that. Nakazawa had official contacts so he’d probably be able to get the most up to date most useful map. However you’re not sure how to convince him to get him to acquire it for you, unlike if you went to Toulour. Speaking of which, maybe you needed to give him a call if Kaoru and her bunch were planning to raid Misawa Cram School. It was probably a good idea to actually use a professional for this you thought. That and you didn’t want any of your friends mixed up in this ‘magic’ business. Though knowing Touma he’ll probably be involved at some point. With that reasoning you called up Toulour you THIEF contact.

“Morning Torikov, I was hoping you’d call sooner,” he answered, “Though I suppose you’ve been busy. Anyway, I’m free around lunch so I’ll see you then.”

You reminded again that he wasn’t going to talk business over the phone before jotting down the appointment details. With that squared away, you finally notice that it was morning recess. Time to entertain the kids again you thought.

Episode 26 End. You now have a choice of interludes.

You are Kudou Asuka, and you are very, very annoyed. Thankfully you were soon going to have the opportunity to take out that frustration on the very same source of your ire. Your father was playing host to a colleague from Italy. Said colleague had a son who was roughly your age. Sadly he fancies himself as something he is not. That fop has been attempting to woo you since he stepped in to the mansion. The adults found it cute but you not so much. He obviously did not take no for an answer.

This is why you were showing him the dojo. It was the last room on your impromptu tour and hopefully, the last room he would ever see. The walls were lined with weapons and it was not to your surprise that he wished to play with one. You certainly did not goad him in to a duel to first blood at all. He elects for a rapier, citing how cool it looks and how easy it is to handle. You on the other hand, unsheathe The Dean. It is taller than you are currently but it feels weightless in your hands. The first few exchanges solidified his inexperience with a real sword though to his credit he doesn’t back down.

Once the idea took root in your head you decided to act on it immediately. You didn’t see a reason why you should even spare the effort to appease him. His strikes were slow and sloppy, giving you little challenge save to not fall asleep. How could he, a boy who had not even been schooled by the finest swordsman in the world ever hope to match you? How dare he take the irreplaceable moments of your time? Simply speaking he was a waste and you did not care to drag this out longer than you had to. Judging from his stance and his eyes you foresaw his next move as he lunged in once more with a thrust.

You simply batted it aside with contemptuous ease as The Dean cut through his leg. It doesn’t go clean through as you expected, seemingly caught on bone. Despite how light The Dean felt you probably did not have enough strength to cleave straight through just yet. It was something to study later you ponder. The silence between the two of you didn’t last too long. Your smile must have been twisted as you wrenched your blade out from his leg. Then the screaming began.

Did she just seriously try to amputate this poor bastard for being a fop?

The most appropriate course of action in this case was to fetch an adult. With a sufficiently panicked and lost expression you could easily pass this off as an unfortunate accident. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to let children play with sharp weapons unsupervised in the first place? Well it wasn’t your problem at all as you looked for the nearest adult though you weren’t exactly putting too much effort in to it.

Your uncle was the first to find you. You’re really not surprised given his sharp senses that often times bordered on supernatural. In fact, he only glanced at you once before continuing swiftly to the training room where your unfortunate opponent lay bleeding in an ever growing pool of his own blood. To be more accurate he was dying. It was a calculated strike, deliberately placed but no one had to know that. You suspected that Uncle also knew this as well but if he did he did not voice it as the both of you watched the young boy finally fall silent.

Your uncle probably did discuss it with your father however seeing as how the old coot thought it would be a good idea to ship you off to Academy City on your own. Never one to take it lying down you told him to get bent, so he did, literally. Your only consolation was that The Dean was going with you. You were accompanied by an adult this time though.

It was your mother that accompanied you as far as she could from your estate. You wouldn’t speak to father and Uncle was busy on one of his trips again. She was cheery and kept trying to keep your mind off of what the adults considered your trauma. You knew she was also genuinely worried about you. Well you weren’t exactly happy with your arrangement of course and it was strange that your strange talent did not affect her, unlike most others. She kept going on and on about making friends, going to school, ogling boys and all the things a normal girl might experience.

Then you remembered that your mother was rather uncontrollable in her youth, much like you were now, and that only her little brother, Uncle, could ever get her to behave. Perhaps you inherited her temperament because your looks were mostly from your father. Of course as soon as you arrived in the fabled city and you separated from her you voiced your first words that day.

“Come Dean, let us find some trouble.”

Interlude end. For the record I’m not French. Till next Wednesday.

More dots. There are no whelp groups in this raid. Why is there no aggro reset? When writefag and /tg/ meet the story begins.
