It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. Alas, even though they have attained the lofty goal of interstellar travel, mankind has yet to conquer it’s baser instincts.

Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are launched out of a spaceship in a drop pod filled with bright orange and highly toxic gel. You crash land into the target’s facilities, make a mess, do your job, and then get the hell out.

You are a Fall Guy. You are a Deniable Asset.

After about half an hour of waiting the HOEV finally does arrive, settling down in an open space outside of the server room. You make sure that the various weapons you stole from dead secfors are on your person before stomping into the back of the HOEV in your new BART suit. You step near the side of the cargo cabin, Elda and Niels continuing on into the passenger cabin. Markos hangs a shotgun he snagged from one of the Reyumbi secfors off of a wall mount before walking up to the passenger cabin doors himself. He turns around before entering the cabin and looks back at you. “Need a hand?”

You wave your one free arm back at him, still half in, half out of the BART suit. “Nah, it’s fine. Just tell the pilot to give me a minute before take off.”

Markos nods. “Will do,” he replies before entering the passenger cabin.

You spend the next several minutes extricating yourself from the BART, strapping it down to a wall mount, and finding various safe places to store your pilfered guns and other arms. After debating about it for a little while you decide to leave the MAHWM serial plate in cargo. No one else would get why it’s so interesting, except maybe Niels. Double checking that your little armory won’t be shifting around in flight, you dust your hands off and step up to the passenger door.

“Hey Markos thanks for tell-” your words die in your throat as you see Darius sitting in the passenger cabin. The senior merc’s expression is unreadable. You glance around. Elda, Niels, and Markos look about as confused, curious, and nervous as you feel. Clearly Darius hasn’t said or done anything to indicate why he’s here. Yet.

You give a somewhat informal, but still respectful, salute. StrikeOut doesn’t usually insist on old-Earth style military protocol, but you figure it can’t hurt. “...isn’t taxi above your paygrade sir?”

Darius snorts and waves your salute away. “Kid, you know how much a taxi working Earth orbit makes in a year? I have absolutely no idea. And its beside the point anyway. Siddown.”

<Fuck me. Well, at least he doesn’t seem mad. Not that I’ve ever really seen Darius get mad.>

You take a seat and glance over at the other three squaddies. Elda seems particularly exasperated at your attempt to lighten the mood. <Oh shit. What if he wants my ass in therapy? I mean, I thought I was pretty careful this time. Relatively speaking.>

However, Darius’ words aren’t directed at you. Instead he shifts in his chair until he’s facing Niels. “Listen glasses. We know you hacked into HR’s network.”

Niels looks utterly shocked. His eyes bulge and he glances around nervously. He makes eye contact with you, and you can see the rising panic. You make some sort of ‘cut it’ gesture with your hands. You’re pretty sure that if this was really an issue they just wouldn’t have bothered picking you guys up at the evac site.

Darius keeps on talking, his face still as stoic as it was when you entered the cabin. “According to your employee contracts, which you all signed and confirmed as having read I might add, unauthorized access to any computer system belonging to the StrikeOut corporation is sufficient grounds for termination. As is aiding and abetting such access,” he continues, turning around to glance at the rest of you. “With that in mind, you mind telling me what the fuck could have possibly seemed like a good enough reason to violate your contracts?”

Not unless he asks.

Though it's not really hard to work out, the mission was to fuck with a stock exchange server, the obvious answer if you have a good hacker is to add your own alterations to it to benefit you.

>>31499808
The point is to make money, because of the hacking stuff Neils did we can participate in easy insider trading on the Xuanzang sector stock market. Which means we can all make more money.

You decide to speak up first. You might not’ve been the one to come up with the fool idea in the first place, that was Niels, and Elda’s the one who would make all of the actual semi-legal trades, but the responsibility of your self-appointed command still lies heavily on your shoulders. You speak up first. “Well sir, we did it for the money. Something about being up to your ass in debt doesn’t sit well with me. Figure it didn’t for everyone else here either.”

Darius shakes his head. “Morons. All of you were well on your way to get out of debt in the next five or so years at most. Hell,” he points at Niels, “This little bastard got out of debt in his first drop! But that wasn’t the answer I was looking for. Let me be as direct as possible. For what purpose did the four of you decide to go on a drop that was restricted to employees at Omicron rank?”
>>
AWWW YEAH

MAH FAVOURITE QUEST
>>
You mouth at the air for a second, debating on whether you should deflect the senior merc or pony the information up. You’re usually a pretty stand up guy, but this seems like some serious business. Before you can say anything, however, Niels breaks. “Sir! It was all my idea sir! One one of my drops I ended up getting some security codes to the Reyumbi stock exchange and we uploaded a hack to the backup! Going on this mission was necessary since I needed to be on site to access it!”

Elda nods, although you doubt she followed Niels’ spotty reasoning. “Yes. It was to give us an edge in stock trades and investments in the Xuanzang sector. I was to coordinate the trades so as not to alert Reyumbi that we were gaming the system.”

Darius sits back. “So. Let me get this straight. Glasses over here figured out how to hack not only our HR’s computer net, but stole security secrets from a company WHILE ON CONTRACT with them. Then Glasses used this knowledge to subvert said client’s security system on their Stock exchange, perhaps the single most important asset in their inventory. And the Alpine Ice Queen was gonna coordinate your efforts to avoid detection and perpetuate some fraud or insider trading or whatever? And I suppose Shrooms and Suicide Pact over here were in on the plan the whole time.”

Darius leans forward, somehow managing to glower at all four of your at once. “Is that about right? Or am I missing something.”

You swallow before letting out a quiet, “Yeah,” Markos manages a similar confirmation. Niels is too busy deflating to find the air speak. Elda on the other hand, replies with a soft “No.”

You and Markos look at your fellow rookie in shock. She seems to be on the verge of making eye contact with you before Darius skewers her with a look. “No? Is there something I missed, AIQ?”

Elda looks around, slightly panicked. “N-n-no! I simply just meant that you were not missing anything in your summation of events!”

Darius sits back, crosses his arms and closes his eyes. He exhales loudly through his nostrils before speaking, his voice slow, words chosen with extreme care. “So that’s how it is. I have to say, very disappointing. I personally expected better from you. All of you.”

Darius stands up and turns around slowly, pulling out a tablet and typing something into it. He seems almost defeated. As if what ever he’s doing right now is paining him. He shakes his head as he types, sighing once more.

Markos speaks up. More like he mumbles up. “Sir? What’s going on?”

Darius looks up, still not facing any of you, his eyes staring straight into the bulkhead. He waits a few seconds before answering. “Wiring twenty K to Val. I could have sworn you guys were trying to redirect all that money from LLS’ shell corps to your bank accounts.”

The four of you are still silent, but the mood has completely changed. Where trepidation reigned discombobulation now holds sway. Markos makes a noise not unlike a gasping fish, assuming fish can even gasp. You’re still not one hundred percent on that. Elda finally manages to string together something close to an actual word. “What.”

Darius simply sighs and rubs his eyes with his free hand. Eventually you find your voice. “We could have done that?”

Darius spins around to look at you, arms outstretched as if pleading for an answer. “Fuckin’ I know right! That would have been tens of billions of credits each! What the hell? Did it just not occur to you or something?”

“N-no,” reponds Niels, clearly working more from an instinct to answer questions than any higher thought process.

“It never did. Merda, we could have been rich…”

“Hey wait a minute, they could have easily tracked us down, right? Stocks were clearly the safest option. Besides,” you say gesturing at Elda, “That sounds like the sort of idea she’d smack me on the back of the head for.”

Darius shakes his head. “Coulda been multi-billionaires. Coulda easily gone into hiding while Steadfast and LLS both tried to figure out where the money actually went. You could have done it man!”

Darius tilts back his head and roars with laughter. “Hell no. Shit, the worst we had planned for you guys was letting you get shot up by Reyumbi secfors, maybe a fatality or two, before Valk and I came crashing down, to teach you a lesson about getting in over your heads. If anything performing so well on this drop is only going to help your careers at SO out.”

Darius snorts, rubbing his nose as he sits down once more, his eyes twinkling in amusement. “You didn’t try to fuck over StrikeOut, your fellow mercs, or NeoLogos. And we don’t think you’ll be caught either. So long as you don’t do any of those four things, we don’t give two shits. For Chrissake. We shoot people for a living! You lean back and shake your head. “Goddamn sir. If I survived that drop only to have a heart attack I would have haunted your ass.”

Darius chuckles. “I would have had it coming. But shit. I gotta fuck with you mercs somehow, and Valkyrie’s already got a monopoly on one interpretation of that.”

“Hang on. Valkyrie’s in orbit? Also, on an entirely unrelated note, did you see and or record me wrecking that MAHWM?”

Elda makes a tching noise and shakes her head, looking slightly irritated. Markos crows with laughter. “Hey sour grapes and all that Elda.”

Elda sticks out her tongue, apparently Markos’ jibe was beneath a proper italian cussing out. You do note that her ears are slightly pink as she turns away, however. Darius snorts before answering your question. “Probably have something on the helmet cams. And since Niels here hacked the security net he can probably get some footage of the fight too. Right buddy?”

Niels finally manages to find his voice. “Yeah! Yes, I think I could do that. Darius, sir, how did you, Strike Out I mean, how did you find out I hacked into HR?”

Darius shrugs. “Eh. I’m no programmer, but you can bet your ass we’ve got a few people on the Brick with a century or so on you kid. Probably got rumbled by one of them.”

“And wait,” continues Niels, “StrikeOut is okay with mercs just doing that? Hacking their systems?”

“Well A,” says Darius, sticking out a pinky, “It’s just friggin’ HR. Who gives a shit? And two,” his ring finger, “All you did was put your own necks on the line. Like I said earlier, don’t fuck with StrikeOut, don’t fuck with your comrades, definitely don’t fuck with NeoLogos, and it’ll all be good.”

“Alright, one thing though,” you say, “Well one more thing I guess. Am I really Suicide Pact?”

Elda nods vigorously. “I would like to also voice my concern that I am the Alpine Ice Queen.”

Darius shakes his head. “Goddamnit rookies. You think you get to choose your nicknames? Quickest way to just get called ‘Supreme Prissmaster’ for the rest of your professional life. But no, I don’t think that any of you have nicknames yet. I was just coming up with some shit to call you.”

All four of you breathe a sigh of relief, which earns a mock hurt expression from Darius. “Hey now, I thought Shrooms and Suicide Pact were both pretty good.”

“Like anyone would wanna drop with a guy called Suicide Pact,” you grunt, shifting in your seat and activating the G-harness as the pilot announces that gravity well escape is imminent.

The cabin falls silent as the HOEV fires it’s thrusters, and the five of you are pushed back into your seats. A little while later the pressure subsides, and the Gs recede like the tide. Unbuckling yourself, you allow yourself to drift ‘up’ towards the center of the cabin, enjoying the weightlessness.

I think the most important thing with the BART is to:

- Make sure it's customised/tech'd out in ways that mean it won't get taken out easily/can be retrieved easily even if damaged.

- Grind our tech skills with armoury work/open up more armoury discounts

- Seriously weigh up if keeping the BART is worth the money vs other gear/augments because those BART drop pods might be expensive.

You drift around to face your fellow rookies. “Alright, you know what this calls for?”

“Some antacids,” asks Niels, holding his stomach and looking slightly queasy.

“Naw,” you scoff waving your hand at him. “I was thinking an old-Earth movie night! We could watch the Thing. The effects didn’t age so well, but I think it’s still pretty creepy.”

“Creepy?” says Niels, looking nervous.

“Ah c’mon Niels,” replies Markos, punching him gently on the shoulder, “It’ll be a good way to practice for movie night with Tsukino! You know how Japanese girls love horror flicks.”

“They do?”

“I guess? I was just saying that to be honest. Besides, knowing Ivan the movie is probably like 300 years old and dated as fuck.”

While you let those two speculate on the Thing, you consider the possibility of the arctic stratagem. You speculated on the possibility with one of your fellow Earth Culture classmates, Johnny. Guy was weird, craggy as fuck face and spoke with an accent, but he had a lot of ideas. Most of them bad. Anyway, the idea was to lower the thermostat as the movie goes on to increase the chance of cuddles.

Of course, you’re assuming Niels brings along Tsukino here.

Shrugging to yourself you drift up to the pilots cabin and activate the wall terminal. “Hey Dwight?”

You are incredibly satisfied to see Dwight’s less than sane grin on the terminal. “Ivan! It’s been too long! You here for a ride along?”

You grin as the pilot bay doors open, and float inside, strapping yourself into the co-pilot’s seat as Dwight gives you a friendly handshake. “Been ages. How’re things?”

Oh hey, I'm pretty sure no one has asked, but here is a full accounting of the StrikeOut pay ranks, as well as which mercs you have either met or are on the character sheet belong to which rank.

Tier 1 Technology: Firearms, limited augmentation
>Omega- Mercs in Boot Camp. The Himawari Force is currently Omega ranked mercs
>Tau- Rookie mercenaries fresh out of basic. Elda, Niels, Markos, Cy, and Tsukino are all Tau ranked.
>Sigma- still relatively new mercs, but have proven themselves somewhat. Ivan and Simge both hold this rank.
>Omicron- This is the first rank of "average" mercs in terms of combat experience and skill. This rank marks the beginning of really dangerous missions. Includes Marlena Redskies and Dr. Tran prior to ganking
>Lambda- More experienced than Omicron mercs. All squad leaders need to be Lambda rank to seek squad leadership accreditation. Include Clayton, Maxim Bodrov, and Choi Lei
>Theta- This is the upper tier of what can be considered a normal merc. Past this it becomes difficult to balance civilian life with mercenary responsibilities. Includes Ifu Mokwena and Jason Smith.

Tier 2: Extensive gene modding, beginning of cybernetic augmentation. Normal firearms are replaced by electromagnetic weapons.
>Epsilon- At this point the merc life start to take over. Some can maintain the balance, but most end up going further up the payranks. You do not know anyone at Epsilon rank
>Delta- Skilled and experienced mercs, will take on the most dangerous assignments. Includes Valkyrie
>Gamma- Yet more skill, yet more experience, yet more toys. Mercs at this rank are a rarity. Inlcudes Darius.

Tier 3: Genemods are insufficient at this point. Mercs are massively cybernetically augmented. Electromagnetic weapons are replaced by directed energy weapons.
>Beta- An extreme rarity. Some people speculate that most mercs at beta rank spend all their time between missions in cryo. Includes Alexander Barrister.
>Alpha- No known mercs.

Its more of a thermodynamics problem than a technology problem. Nanites simply don't have the surface area to disperse excessive heat so they can't be used in high temp environments ( boiling water can destroy nanites ) or even move too fast lest they quite literally shake themselves to pieces.

We are also talking about a time a couple hundred years in the future, where we have the ability to successfully integrate tech with the human body, genetically modify the body, jump between stars in a reasonable time period, transmit information over MASSIVE distances instantaneously thanks to worm holes, and even more.

Nanomachines are possible. Or at least theoretically should be.
>>
>>31503589
Graphene is pretty magical but being made of graphene wont help at these scales either. The moving parts in a nanite are going to have extremely tight tolerances, and no matter what their made of heating them up is going to make their atomic bonds wiggle. When they wiggle too much, well...

Really we've been researching nanites and nanomachines for years. It's what cells, various single celled microorganisms and their organelles are.

Definitely not like Earth. Last you checked, they had just ramped up cleanup operations once more. Part of you almost wishes for a few more environmental hazards. For whatever reason, you feel supremely confident at the helm of the HOEV today.

As you coast through space, Dwight removes his pilot’s headset, replacing them with headphones and a pair of aviator shaped e-glasses. Very Top Gun. Not that he’d know what that is. You drift on through space, making some minor course corrections as you near the cruiser. It takes you a few seconds to notice the blinking red light on the console. Staring at it curiously, you wonder what it could mean. You reach down and pick up Dwight’s abandoned headset.

[MISSILE IMPACT IN T-MINUS FIVE]

Oh shit. Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit.

Oh shit.

Your mind races as the world slows down around you. Missile impact. A parting gift from the Reyumbi defense network, no doubt. T-minus five most likely means five seconds, not minutes. Not enough time to alert Dwight and switch control of the HOEV. Your ball now. Think. Evasive maneuvers. Chaff. Both of them simultaneously. Yes. Yes.

You take a risk and hope that the headset had voice activated features. You roar “Chaff!”

The HOEV complies, and a soothing female voice declares that chaff is deployed. You think you can hear a sqwuak of surprise from the passenger cabin. You jerk the controls, sending the HOEV into an aileron roll. Sensors calmly declare that the missile has missed its target.

At this point Dwight has noticed something is up, and you silently transfer control of the HOEV to your pilot, as well as the headset.

“Son of a bitch,” snarls Dwight upon receiving the headset. “Fucking! Ivan, get back into the passenger cabin. Things may be getting hairy.”

You clamber back into the passenger cabin and strap yourself into the harness. The rest of your squadmates do the same. The next several minutes pass in tense silence as the HOEV bucks and rolls. Not that you’d know, but you rather assume so.

Eventually you feel a slight bump as the HOEV lands in the hangar of the cruiser. Dwight’s tense voice speaks over the PA system. “This is your captain speaking. We have experienced some minor turbulence but have now landed safely. Please remember to fly Air Dwight and have a nice day.”

The five of you clamber out of the HOEV, you and Markos taking a moment to assemble your loot, and you taking a moment to get the BART suit on a transport unit for storage… somewhere. As you walk up to your fellow rookies and Darius, you see a ball of red approaching the five of you.

You grin a little. “How’d Reyumbi manage to sneak a heat seeking missile onto the cruiser?”

Darius snorts before said heat seeking missile arrives at it’s target. “Darius,” says Valkyrie officially.

Darius sighs and raises his hands into the air. “What else do you want woman? I already paid out the twenty K.”

“Gloating rights.”

“Granted. I’ll be sure to tell the rookies about training you in boot.”

“Request for gloating rights rescinded.”

“Thought so,” grunts Darius, smirking slightly.

You move slightly to block Valkyrie’s sight of Niels. “I’ll take the fall for you buddy. Keep you pure for Tsukino.”

“Never have I seen a man more willingly cast himself into the abyss,” snorts Niels.

“So anyway, good job you all,” says Valkyrie, crossing her arms. “Very impressive combat performances from the lot of you. Didn’t think you had the ability to think tactically Ivan.”

“Or at all,” mutters Elda under her breath. You glance over to see her give you something close to a half smile. Rolling your eyes you return your attention to the scene at hand. “So, is there a reason you’re here,” asks Darius, “Beyond congratulating the rookies?”

“Not really,” grunts Valkyrie, rotating her arm. “They sorta stole my thunder though. I was really looking to saving their sexy little ass...ets.”

Your shit eating grin makes it clear you are anything but. Valkyrie snorts and rolls her eyes. “So Darius didn’t end up using my suggestion, Bi-”

“Yeah, no. I definitely was not going to use that one,” Darius says, cutting Valkyrie off. “Alright rookies, we only got a little longer before they cut off O2 to save on recycling air. Let’s get moving to cryo.”

The four of you begin to march off after Darius like a troop of well armed ducklings. Just as you’re about to leave the hangar, you feel someone grab you firmly by the upper arm.

it's 3d10, and crits are a special case here.

27-30 counts as a crit, but when the crit actually matters, the action itself is not affected. Ivan enters Grit Mode where he goes kinda crazy but gains the benefit of being better at actions that don't require heavy thinking.

“I take it you didn’t drag me out here for the usual reasons,” you ask, raising an eyebrow.

Valkyrie narrows her eyes. “Don’t be flippant. I do interact with human beings for reasons beyond fighting or fucking.”

You wince internally. To be honest, you hadn’t really considered Valkyrie outside of those two modes. Even sparring Valkyrie was just a variation on fight mode. You rub the back of your neck. “Okay. Yeah. What is it?”

Valkyrie chews on her tongue for a moment before speaking. “Listen. I don’t really know those other rookies. It was the skinny one with the glasses that came up with this idea right?”

“Uh yeah. Niels pretty much thought of most of this.”

Valkyrie sighs. “Thought as much. So. What I’m about to say might be better directed towards him, but I’m pretty sure he’d brown himself if left alone with me. So I’m talking to you. Also, you seemed like the leader in this mission, so just another reason to…”

Valkyrie really does seem bothered by something. You never thought she’d be one to get tongue tied. Shit must really be serious. “What’s up? You really look worried about something. I’m all ears.”

“Fucking better be,” grunts Valkyrie. “Alright. Listen Ivan. Even if you didn’t come up with the idea to go on this drop, you were still their leader. And you know what? You did a great fucking job. I am being entirely honest when I tell you I was waiting next to the pods for the distress call. One leg wound is nothing. You did a brilliant job. All of you.”

Before you can speak Valkyrie takes a step forward, poking you hard in the chest. “And that’s a fucking problem.”

“Wait, what,” you respond, utterly confused. “How is that a problem?”

Valkyrie pokes you in the chest a few more times. “Because. You will get cocky. I was planning to let Reyumbi smack you around a bit before bailing you out. Teach you a lesson about personal limitations. You already take foolish risks. I know, I checked your HR dossier. And you know what? When you think you’ve got some sort of tactical genius on your side you’re only going to be more of a daredevil. Sure, you took on an Omicron rank mission with a bunch of rookies and it was all sunshine and roses.”

Valkyrie pauses. “You got lucky. You were smart, but you were goddamned lucky too.”

Valkyrie pauses once more. After a couple of seconds, you realize she’s waiting for you to say something.

>>
>>31505954
So anyway,I'm glad you asked me about this anon. I'm pretty proud about the 3d10. Basically, the players vote on a chain of actions, usually about 3 to 5 actions long. For example:

>Ivan runs to cover
>Shoots at some enemies
>throws a grenade
>Moves to another bit of cover

So each player rolls a 3d10, and the order that they roll is applied to each action, so the first roll is applied to the first action, etc. The key is to keep the action chains short so that one early failure doesn't invalidate a whole bunch of other stuff.

What I'm really proud of, and something I have yet to fully implement in DAQ, is the potential for the 3d10 to roll for a lot of specific combat actions, like individual sword/axe attacks or blocks against a melee opponent, for example.

Obviously, 3d10 isn't the best system for every quest, but I rather like it.

I do wish criticals were more common though. We have yet to roll a critical success.

That said, there is something called "Grit Mode" where the MC gets a plus five roll modifier and tears shit up. "Look, I hear you, I really do. You make a good point, and I'm not about to deny that things could have gone badly. Any number of things could have ended us there."

“I know, I know,” you reply, slightly irritated. Honestly, Valkyrie was about the last person you expected to rain on your parade after such a resounding success. You kinda figured she’d be more interested in her own funny little incentive program, rather than safety speeches. “I learned what a comrade’s death was like on Bitt-”

“Hold the fuck up,” says Valkyrie, putting a hand in the air. “Don’t tell me that shit. Tran was just some random asshole to you. He didn’t really matter, did he?”

“He had a fucking kid,” you respond, ire rising in your voice, “Of course he mattered! Of course I cared!”

Valkyrie grits her jaw shut. “Yuh huh. Don’t feed me that shit. Sure you probably felt bad that Tran died. You probably feel guilty about it too. What if that Niels kid died? What if Elda died? How would you feel then?”

Valkyrie needs a wakeup call, she thinks we're just saying what she wants to hear.

I think she needs to understand she's been in the business too long, and doesn't know when the truth is staring her in the face about us.

The thought settles heavily in your mind. The very prospect of burying any of your fellow rookies makes you feel a little ill. Eventually the nausea at the prospect of attending their funeral disappears beneath a rising tide of rage. How dare she. How dare she suggest, even fucking imply, that you didn’t care about your friends. You take a moment to throttle down your anger. It cools into an icy ball of determination.

"The same, losing a member of a team even a "random asshole" is not ideal. We all chose this life and line of work because we know the risks and the fact we could all die in some fuckin' random hot zone out in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. We have accepted that, fate."
>>
You begin to walk in an oval, striking your hand with a fist as you speak. “It does not mean that we choose to ignore or brush of the fact that it does happen. We may become numb to it and learn to deal with the fact that someone we knew died. But it does not change the fact that it is happened, it is happening, and will will probably happen again.

The fuckin' merc standing right there next to you, staring and dealing with the same shit and fightin' along side you. I may not have cared too much about Tran, but I did care when he died."

You stop where you are. You didn’t realize you started pacing when you went off the deep end on this. Honestly, you didn’t realize you had spent so much time thinking about the mortality of the merc life. Must’ve been thinking about it during those nightmares after Bitter Prophet. Valkyrie shakes her head. “Good. Then take some goddamn responsibility for yourself and your comrades. Don’t fuck around Ivan. I can see it now. These people will follow you into the shit. It’s your job to make absolutely fucking sure you’re not leading them into more than they can handle.”

Before you have a chance to reply Valkyrie has started off towards the cryobays.

You hurry up to catch up with Valkyrie and the two of you walk into cryo in silence. When you finally arrive in the bay, you both strip off your armor and store your gear away. Valkyrie has one foot in the bay before you finally speak.

“Hey Valk. Thanks.”

Valkyrie smiles before lowering herself fully into the cryopod and sliding it shut. Distant hopes of a shared pod are dashed against the rocks of reality. Probably for the best, to be honest, considering how prone you are to pod sickness. Last thing you want to do is vomit on your incredibly attractive and competent superior officer.

As you lower yourself into the cryopod you can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation. Your mission performance report and pay are due upon your return, as well as movie night and a drink with Svenja. Even if Valkyrie’s acting weird, things are still very much looking up.

Just before your eye close a stray thought rises to the forefront of your brain. <Why did she?>

The guy who wrote that speech, here.

My guess to be honest is that Valk, is a hardened veteran mercenary. She has seen some shit. She worked her was up from being a rookie to where she is now. She did not do this alone, there were others, comrades, friends, fellow mercenaries that have come and gone. That have died. Maybe some have even died under her command, which makes it even harder.

I say a lot of people earlier trying to go with the direction of "telling her to fuck off" or "give her a wake up call". She didn't need a wake up call or need to be told anything, and when she asked us whether or not if we cared, she already new the answer.

She was trying to give us a wake up call, show us that. She might see a little of us in her, a crazy son of a bitch, who does not seem to take things to seriously. And she does not want to see us go off and get killed or something, doesn't want to see another hot shot rookie get killed.

She told us that now some of the fellow recruits see us as a leader, and that we should start acting as one. And I agree. We already have 3 more mercenaries coming in who we have vouched for, who will be looking up to us to lead, guide, train, and mentor them.

The role of a leader and it's responsibility are already among us and we have to start being one, or else we are gonna get killed, and worse. Get the lives of the men and women who trusted us, believed in us, and followed us killed.

And maybe Valk sees that if she can make sure we are competent leader, maybe a few more rookies and other mercenaries won't fuckin' die a grim death out there.

That's just my 2 cents here. I really enjoy this quest, and I thank you Fall Guy for running it.

I disagree with parts of what you posted.

She may have phrased it as a wake-up call for us, but I find it more likely she is projecting herself on us. It's pretty definite, based on her reactions, that she IS responsible (or was leading) mercs that died. Probably horribly.

Seeing some of herself in us, she assumes we will be the same as her, and (like many parents), projects herself on us. I'm less than thrilled that she (or Darius) didn't show up earlier before we inserted, and basically let us know they knew what was up. I would have even been more impressed if they canned us, or called us out before we left the Brick.

I won't say you are completely wrong, but I personally believe the truth is less straightforward. There better be storytime by her if she's serious about us getting better, because it's a two way street.
>>
>>31510478
Fall Guy, one quick question. And my apologies if it comes off a little "waifu"y. Which characters have you put the most thought into their romantic subplots?
>>
>>31511119
No, that's a perfectly valid question anon. I've put the most thought into Elda and Valkyrie easily. Svenja is number three, but she's been getting more attention as of late.

As for anyone else. pretty much none whatsoever. I was considering Tsukino, but Niels proved to be a very effective barrier, so her romance subplot has been shelved for now. Niels may end up going through it, and Ivan can have a peripheral involvement.

I love Ivan's interactions with Svenja, but I can't see her in a romantic light, she's a cute coworker who provides a funny and interesting outside perspective and a good friend but I just don't see the spark between Ivan and her that I see between Ivan and Val and Elda.

Do you base them around ivan, or do you connect threads to other high profile/screentime/notable NPC's and figure out what they're doing in offtime?

I'm trying to work out some more non-ivan relationships in some form of detail, but right now the notes on the social scene in DAQ are insanely Ivan-centric.

Huh! neat. Hope it goes well.

best thing to do i think is decide who remains on the brick/sits missions out, etc, and has time to interact.

Then its a matter of keeping personalities/hobbies/meshing with others into account and throwing npcs at each ohter in your head, often accompanied by 'fuck it, lets see how good it went' dice rolls
