>So what is this, anyway?
A quest set in the Gundam franchise's Universal Century, UC 0083.

>How does voting work?
You'll have 10 minutes to vote on a course of action, and roll if that's required. The first three rolls for the winning course of action will be considered, with higher rolls being better. Write-ins are encouraged, and may end up worked into an update in some form. This is especially true for dialogue.

>How can I get caught up?
I have just the thing for you:

>Neat. So when do you usually run?
Saturdays and Sundays, from 10pm to 2am UTC (5pm to 9pm EST; 2pm to 6pm PST).

>Do you have a twitter?
Indeed: you can find me at @QMKingofHearts.

The date is February 4th, UC 0083. You are Lieutenant Commander Dominic O'Hara, mobile suit pilot and 19 year-old veteran of the One Year War. In the last thread, you and your new team boarded the EFSF cruiser Kyongju, bound for the asteroid called Axis on a mission to capture one experimental mobile weapon and destroy a second. The exact nature of your opponents is unknown, but both are presumed to be heavily armed.

At the moment, the cruiser is suspended above the Earth, having purged its booster section and leveled off into a stable orbit. It will take a full seventy-three days to travel to your target, and unfortunately your orders don't cover what to do with yourselves for that time.

The mess hall is opened for dinner just as the Kyongju's main engine begins to spin up, and you feel a brief tug of acceleration that coincides neatly with a growl from your stomach. It's likely that the rest of your team will already be there, but it might also be worth taking some time to deal with a few minor issues before your meal.

It strikes you that now might be a good time to familiarize yourself a bit more with your machine: the Lilium is still brand new, and has just been re-calibrated. In fact, the last time you saw it the thing still hadn't been put together all the way. Your stomach however objects to the notion of delaying dinner, and you've never been one to ignore what your gut tells you.

With a kick, you exit your quarters and grab hold of one of the handles on the opposite side of the hall. Rather than use the device the way it was meant, you push yourself gently forwards to the end of the hall, then up a set of stairs to the main deck.

Sure enough, you're greeted by Carya, Karen, and Reiko as they settle in to start their meals. You're also greeted with quite a few stares and whispering among the enlisted: you hear the word "Newtype" thrown around quite a bit.

"It's pretty good stuff, Commander," Karen tells you. "Get yourself a packet and float on over here."

The meal consists of heated vegetable stew in a plastic packet that you have to suck through a large straw so that the liquid won't drift all over the room. Thankfully the pork is solid, and pre-cut into chunks. It's still space food, but it certainly beats the average MRE.

"So, how do you think we should prepare, ma'am?" Carya asks Karen.

"I don't know, Lieutenant," she admits. "Dominic is the space veteran here. I was hoping he'd have a plan."

Fighting in zero-g can be a bitch, and we should get used to it.

"Well, you've probably been briefed before about the risks of orthostatic intolerance and atrophy on extended zero-g missions, so I think three hours a day should be devoted to exercise. That goes for all of us, combat pilots and otherwise."

Karen nods. "Sounds reasonable enough. Anything else?"

"Yeah. Zero gravity maneuvering can be a bitch to get used to, so I think Carya, Audrey and I should practice moving around the ship unassisted. Get used to how a human-shaped object moves in freefall."

Carya shrugs. To her, this is probably going to be more of a fun diversion than actual training, but you still have no idea how Audrey will adjust. Speaking of which...

"Where exactly IS Ensign April, anyway?"

"She ate quickly and went to the hangar deck to review some schematics of some sort," Reiko informs you. "Something about remote weapons technology."

Ah. That does sort of sound like her.

"Well, let's go grab her when we're done. I want to see how she handles herself."

After finishing your food, Karen and Reiko split off to investigate the ship's exercise room while you and Carya head towards the hangars. You're not surprised to see that the sisters prefer to bounce off the walls as well rather than be carried through the halls.

Audrey waves you over as you enter the hangar, and returns to working on her dataslate.

"You're just in time, Commander. I had a question for you."

"Go on, Ensign."

"I was going over the specifications on the three Lilium machines, and I noticed a few notes for future systems to include. I'd like your permission to work on developing some of the designs a bit more fully, and I wanted to know what you wanted me to focus on first."

She shows you the data she's been working on, and it seems she's separated the half-finished designs into offensive, defensive, and mobility-enhancing systems.
(1/2)
>>
>>32924647
"Also," the Ensign adds, "If you come up with any wild ideas, let me know and I'll see if they're possible. And if you want me to explain any of these, all you need to do is ask. They're pretty sketchy, for the most part, but more or less workable."

> Tell me more about our mobility enhancement options
If they're using beam weapons, doesn't really matter what we're using as armor.

Though hearing about the other stuff would be nice as well.
>>
>>32924770
I don't know, we might get some defense against beams. We're just about at the point in the UC timeline when they start making shields with anti-beam coating, we could probably snag one. Hell, the GP02's shield can withstand being on the edge of a nuke's blast radius, I'm sure it can tank some beam rifle shots.
>>
>>32924690

>Tell me more about our mobility enhancement options.

maybe the Twins might benefit from the offensive research as it could lead to wired/wireless bits, which one could control while the other focuses on the MS....
>>
You motion to Audrey to hand you the dataslate, and begin scrolling down through the information. She wasn't kidding: the Doctor barely got halfway through each of the plans before abandoning them for one reason or another. Some of them you suspect he just got bored.

“Tell me about the enhanced mobility designs, Audrey. Are those feasible?”

“Yes, sir,” she replies. “In fact they're dead simple. One option is referred to here as a “sturm booster”. It's basically a self-contained backpack addition that has big thrusters and fuel, but sadly the one here is incompatible with the Lilium's backpack. We might be able to work something similar onto another mounting point though... maybe the shoulders or the wrists.”

“And the other”

“A platform based on the Dodai bomber. It's called a “base jabber”, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. It'd let our machines fly in atmosphere: maybe even re-enter independently, if modified.”

Something in the schematics catches your eye, and you have to scroll back up to make sure you read it properly.

“A beam shield?”

“Ah, you noticed that.” Audrey nods to herself, and even the sisters' interest seems to have been piqued as they float up over your shoulder to see for themselves. “I'm a bit surprised nobody's tried that sort of thing before.”

“I see,” Catrina mutters. “You use the I-field to shape it into a disc, and it blocks beams as well as neutralizes projectiles.”

“Right,” Audrey confirms. “It's just the power draw would be massive... I'd estimate eighteen hundred kilowatts just for the shield.”

“And our suits' reactors only produce nineteen. Shit. And you just know some asshole at a design bureau is going to build a suit with an overpowered reactor and use it to run a bunch of cannons.”
(1/?)
>>
>>32924884
Yeah, maybe. Though the first anti-beam coating in UC was tested with the Hyaku Shiki, and that thing won't be made for another 4 years or so.

Maybe slapping enough armor on the suit, similar to what the O and other machines Paptimus was using?
>>
>>32925054
Technically the first anti-beam coating was on the Gouf Custom. It's just that anti-beam coating didn't get good enough to stop beams entirely until the Hyaku Shiki. Up until then you still needed a thick plate of armor backing it up.
>>
>>32924992
Carya takes over for a moment. "It makes sense, though. Designers on both sides of the war stopped issuing shields, you know."

"I actually never noticed," Audrey admits. "Why do you think that is?"

"In the hands of a novice it's dead weight, and most pilots die too quickly to learn how to use them properly. So they're no longer standard issue."

Audrey seems taken aback, and you can tell that she had never really considered the issue. Carya, on the other hand seems a bit more reticent than usual, as if she's reminded herself of something unpleasant.

"And the weapons," you ask, trying to salvage the mood. "What's going on there?"

Audrey seems to focus again. "Right... mostly they seem to be remote weapons. Bit carrier shields, mounting points for extra generators, that sort of thing. No way to make them useful yet without a miniaturized psycommu system, though hopefully we'll have one in a few months to start testing."

"Right, I'll clear it with Karen. Keep us in the loop if you have any breakthroughs." Audrey nods to herself.

"But for now, I have another task for you... get to the exercise room"

"Okay..." the Ensign responds before you silence her.

"Unassisted. Completely free."

Audrey looks a bit nervous at the prospect...

I second this
>>
>>32925173
Maybe see what's bugging Carya as well. We need our pilots in top shape for this.
>>
>>32925173
That sounds good. A few EVA jaunts with the suits should get us back to being familiar with space combat. And we've got a new suit with a different balance to our old GM Sniper II, so we'll need to test it in space maneuvers anyway. A good training montage will let us start coordinating as a team, too, since we're going to be up against some nasty foes soon enough.

Speaking of which, what weapons load out are we going with? The Doctor suggested using the mega-gatling tin case Charming has an I-Field, but that thing is heavy and takes up all our hardpoints. I'm thinking we take the boosted beam rifle and the folding bazooka, instead. That way we can still participate in the capture operation on Snow White, and if we need to we can swap from clay rounds to explosive if we need ballistic firepower. Though we have shoulder cannons, so it's not like we'd be complete out of luck anyway.
>>
>>32925287

Agreed as well everyone needs a clear mind for this mission
>>
>>32925173

I'd be up for voting this, if we weren't going breakneck speeds towards axis.... so I don't think we'll get any real outside piloting done... We can however use the preliminary data from the test to practice in the simulators.... not quite as helpful, but better than nothing....
not to mention working on discovering the Newtype happy naked space zone in which we can have soul to soul conversations with our squad....
>>
>>32925372
We're not continuously accelerating, though. There will be fairly long stretches in which we can drift alongside the ship at the same velocity with no fear of being left behind.
>>
>>32925439

touche'

Then I support doing the space practice...
>>
>>32925300
Well, the I-Field stops beam weapons, not kinetic/explosive ones. A bazooka would work great against it, while the beam rifle could help us with taking out whatever support Axis deploys. As long as they don't unleash an entire fleet against us, in which case we're boned without any sufficient firepower.

I wonder how fast we could get another weapons loadout in case shit hits the fan. Or switch ammo types for the bazooka.
>>
Over the next few weeks, you keep yourselves busy with short EVA missions in your new machines. For once it seems like the Lilium is cooperating with you: in space you have a 360* view of your surroundings, and the machine will literally go anywhere you want it to seemingly at will. The new backpack layout was definitely meant for this sort of thing, and you can't help but add little flourishes here and there during your flights.

Audrey seems to grow more confident as well, even to the point of suggesting a game of tag between your three machines. She also takes some time to practice sniping from a fixed position on the dorsal hull of the Kyongju, hitting simulated targets with increasing skill and precision.

Carya and Catrina take to tagging out during your maneuvers, and each attempts to match or out-do the other in mock saber duels between Lilium and Viola. You still feel like they're concerned about something as you near the halfway point of your trip, however.

After three weeks, you call your team into the cramped briefing room assigned to you aboard ship.

"You called us, Dom?" Carya inquires.

"Yeah, I wanted to check in. See how we were all doing."

Maybe if they have some suggestions as well.

Lets ask the twins what's bugging them in private.

“Well, first off I wanted to check in with you all, see how things are going.”

“You've been on all the flights, Dominic, what do you think?” Karen replies.

“I think we're all there, performance-wise. Mostly I wanted to see where your heads are at, because that's not something I can see from where I'm sitting.”

“I'm a little bored,” Reiko admits. “Filing reports out here is the same as doing it anywhere else. I got to check out the pri-fly setup, though, so I've gotten used to the systems here.”

Karen nods. “I've convinced Captain Greene to hand over tactical authority to our unit,” she explains. “But I still hear some grumblings among the crew. They haven't been told what we're up to, and they don't like having two Newtypes aboard. Superstitious, I think.”

Audrey turns to face you. “I'm having a pretty good time, though with the constant training I've fallen a bit behind on the data analysis. Upside is I feel a lot better about going into combat for the first time. I've also heard some... scuttlebutt. Mostly about the fact that there's only one male officer in our team. I think I can survive that, though.”

“Oh yeah?” Karen asks. “What're they saying about us?”

“The predictable crap, or course.”

“Always the case,” the Commander replies dismissively. “Trap a bunch of men up in a tin can for a month and that's all they can think about.”

Carya nods in your direction. “I'm fine too. Same as always.” There's that sense again, the feeling that something is bothering her.

“Sounds good then, I'll see you all in the mess. It's meatloaf night, I know how you love that, Hollinger.” The sergeant moans as she drifts through into the next room, followed quickly by Audrey. Karen drifts out into the hall and shuts the door. Carya simply drifts over to her bed and sits, looking at you expectantly.

Carya shakes her head. “No, that's not it. We made our peace with that decision long ago, Dom. The Principality betrayed Zeon's ideals long before we betrayed it. So far as I'm concerned they betrayed us. What's wrong is... complicated.”

“Try me. Maybe I can help?”

You can feel Catrina take over, but even she feels a little uncomfortable. “You know it bugs us both how we got these new Gundams. Anaheim built 'em off the records, gave 'em to us, and sent us on a vague mission to take out two experimental mobile weapons. Probably also off the books: we don't even know who issued the orders, right?”

That's a fair point. The EFSF admiralty approved the orders, but you're not sure where they originated, or who's planning the operations, or what their goals might be.

“It just... it makes us nervous, Dom. We weren't sure you and the others felt the same way or not, and neither of us wants it butt heads with you on this: my sis least of all. So we hesitated to even bring it up."

So far as orders go, we have Tactical Authority, and I doubt that raiding Axis and tearing the place apart is realistically on the cards, so while we get in contact with any intelligence assets on Axis, we can do some digging of our own... After all, where would we both be if we blindly followed our orders?"

This mission might be about more than just the units.... They might have the suits loaded with data recorders specifically to record data on us and CC, after all, we are both Newtypes, and CC is even more unique due to the combined soul....
>>

As for the situation...yeah, it doesn't feel right. There are way too many missing details. I think this is part of some bigger op. I'm not sure what yet, but it's making me paranoid. If I had to guess, I'd say it's something connected to Anaheim. That's why I asked the Doctor to look into where Axis is getting its materiel from. Maybe I'm just jumping at shadows, but better to be thorough, right?"
>>
>>32926456
You can't help but let out a short snort of laughter. “Really, you two? That's what you were concerned about?”

“Well, mostly, yeah?”

“Look, we've been together three years. You should know by now I'd hear you out even if I didn't agree that the whole thing stinks to high heaven.”

You can actually feel the sisters' relief as their face breaks into a smile. “Really?”

“Yeah. I mean, any command with this much cloak-and-dagger involved can't be on the level. We may not have much choice at the moment, but on the way back I'll see where the rest of the team falls on the issue. Maybe I'll even have the Doctor do some digging into our chain of command too, when we see him again. See what he finds.”

Pushing off your own bed, you maneuver over to the sisters and place a reassuring hand on their shoulder. “Don't worry about it too much, though. First thing's first, we need to survive at Axis. Then we can sort things out with the Federation brassholes. Got it?”

“Yeah, Dom. Got it.” You get the sense that there's still something Carya wants to say, and that Catrina seems to be talking to her in their head about something or other...

"Would you care to elaborate? It's got both of your attention it seems, so it must be important."

Carya sighs. "Alright, fine, Catrina. I'll tell him. Just... quit teasing me about it, alright?"

For a moment you can tell she's trying to collect herself, before she continues. "I've... been interested in you. For a while now. And I was wondering if you felt anything like that towards me. Or... or us. I'm not sure how all that works in this case."

Catrina takes over for a moment to add her two cents: "She was freaking out because I don't usually go in for your type, so she didn't believe me when I told her I was also kinda into you."

"Oh thank god," Carya mutters. "I was terrified of all the ways that might have backfired."

"Well, it's not like this is a great place to pursue that sort of thing... MREs aren't exactly the most romantic of dinner plans, and watching training films on VD isn't nearly the same as seeing a movie. But when we're back on Earth, or when we put into port, who knows?" Both sisters seem happy to agree, and Carya insists on cuddling close with you in your bunk for the night. Given the circumstances, who would disagree?

You're not sure if it's their reassuring yet chaste physical presence or the warm feelings you sense them directing towards you, but spending that night in the sisters' embrace was the most relaxed you can recall being since before the war.

The rest of the trip passes without incident... though not without amusement. The next morning your team notices that you and the sisters are in a brighter mood, but nobody asks why.

On day 35, your last scheduled day of acceleration, you caught the sisters staring at a clock on the wall of the mess hall. Not wanting to interrupt, you took a seat nearby and waited for her to do something. After fifteen minutes of staring at Carya staring at a clock on the wall, you were about to conclude that she was simply off her rocker... but that was when Audrey walked in and sat down next to the sisters, and asked what they were doing, whereupon the sisters explained they were using their Newtype abilities to make the clock spin backwards.

However, the next day saw the Kyongju pitch over and face the opposite direction so that it could decelerate. The sisters, once more in the mess, were staring at the clock as it ran backwards.

“How the hell are you doing that?” Audrey asked, shocked at what she was seeing.

Carya simply smiled. “It's easier when we're decelerating.”

As Audrey drifted off towards the chow line wide-eyed at the whole exchange, Carya leaned over to whisper to you. “It's also easier when you open it up and move some of the bits around.”

Finally day 73 arrives, and you prepare to sortie with your team and the GM team aboard the Kyongju. It's also time to select your weapons load for the mission: the clay bazooka is mounted to your shield in two parts, for now, with two extra HE rounds.

>Hyper Beam Rifle: no bonus to hitting bits. Highly effective against armor but is stopped by I-fields. Best taken with a Heavy Shotgun.

The Clay Bazooka should cover our physical ammo, we just need the big beam rooty tooty point and shooty for everything that doesn't have an I-Field are we're gold.

>>G05 Gatling: bonus to hitting bits due to rate of fire, less effective against armor but ignores I-fields. Takes up back skirt.

>Technical note: the clay bazooka is stored disassembled with clay rounds loaded
>>

Another point of clarification, if you would: How much will mounting the G05 Gatling slow us down? That thing's heavy. And how quickly would we be able to store it so we can bring our beam saber out? Not that we're that likely to get into a duel, given the targets, but they might have backup.
>>

>>G05 Gatling: bonus to hitting bits due to rate of fire, less effective against armor but ignores I-fields. Takes up back skirt.
>>
>>32927841
Your saber would be mounted in your right arm hardpoint, so you technically don't even need to draw it. The gatling itself is massive, but compared to the mass of the suit it's not a problem. It drags you down from 2.8g maximum acceleration to like 2.6g, with your maneuverability still being high due to your suit's thrust vectoring ability. So there's no mechanical penalty. There might be if you had two, though.
>>

Oh, we can deploy the saber straight from the arm like a wrist blade? Neat. Okay, then. Let's go for the mega gatling.

Our arms won't get heavy unless we mount them both on the same arm.

Sorry, I just wanted to talk about Gatling guns some more.

It's not a difficult choice: given the certainty of bit weaponry and the likelihood of an i-field generator being fielded against you, the massive gatling cannon is probably the best weapon for the job. You order the mechanics aboard the Kyongju to mount the huge lead-spitter onto the Lilium while Carya and Audrey confirm their loadouts.

"So, here's the plan," Karen calls out as she floats into the hangar. "You'll be hitching a ride with the Salamis-class ship Anzio to reach the capture point. The Kyongju will hold back in reserve so that we can recover you later. How you deploy your units are up to you, Commander O'Hara. My only suggestion is leaving a sniper to drop Charming's I-field, if it turns out to have one."

"So that leaves us with four GM-II pilots from the Kyongju, then?" Audrey muses. "Plus the four from the Anzio... we could use them as bait for the trap, or as a flanking force."

"Your call, Dom," Carya adds.

Sending nameless pilots against a suit with remote weaponry? That's suicide! No, they can wait to ambush Charming. I don't care how good the pilot is, it's going to be hard to avoid simultaneous fire from eight bazookas. The Zero GR is fast but not particularly mobile.

From what you remember learning in school, the asteroid belt really isn't really as dramatic as fiction makes it out to be: given the amount of space it covers and the fact that the asteroids in it don't quite add up to the mass of a major terrestrial planet, it's unsurprising that the “belt” is mostly just empty space. In fact, while there are occasional impacts between large asteroids and smaller ones, there have only ever been a few cases of damage to a ship passing through the asteroid belt, and the risk of a major debris strike is actually lower there than it is in low Earth orbit. For the large part, the whole region of space is just as boring as the overwhelming majority of the universe.

The area immediately surrounding Axis, however, is an exception: a co-orbiting cloud of smaller debris both natural and man-made that complicates any approach from inside its orbit. Stony asteroids pulled into the same path as Axis by gravitational influences and orbital resonance have pummeled the hulks of old Zeon ships stripped of their usable components and abandoned, as well as debris left by the Jupiter Energy Fleet as it passes Axis on its way to and from the outer solar system. The result is a tangled, vertigo-inducing mess of stone and steel, spinning silently through the void on its way to nowhere in particular.

Made a damn good place to spring a trap, you figure.

The combined GM-II squads take up positions amid the wreckage, as per your orders, with the Anzio to your rear. Barely visible on the ventral hull of the ship, Audrey has taken up a position to pick off any targets that present themselves.

After a few minutes of waiting, you see the Schnee Weiss approaching your position. The machine doesn't maneuver so much as it lumbers and lurches: next to your own machines, it's almost comical. You can also feel the pilot: clearly a newtype, she feels confident that she can handle what she thinks are just a few lousy GMs.

Unsurprisingly, three of the bits smash into other pieces of debris: one of which almost immediately showers Schnee Weiss with stony rubble after having plowed straight into a stony asteroid only seconds after launching. The other three, however, manage to fire at the GM-IIs positioned amidst the rubble. One shot misses, but two strike home. The first blasts through the arm and torso of one GM, and the second pierces the cockpit of its target and snuffs the pilot out in an instant. It all happened so quickly you barely had time to feel him die.

“Shit,” you hear Carya curse over a laser comm burst. “She can tell where they are... she may move like a rookie, but she's got damn good senses.”

The two of you return fire, along with the remaining GMs, who aren't willing to stay put now that they've been spotted...

... and you manage to nail one of the remaining bits at extreme range. Carya, who's taken over for long-range shooting, manages to score a hit as well. One of the GM pilots, you think the section leader from the Anzio, downs the sixth bit in a great bit of deflection shooting. The other GM-IIs fire wildly, accomplishing nothing but revealing their positions and making a rather impressive lightshow.

You can feel your Newtype opponent's frustration, and you can tell that she's decided you and Carya are much more of a threat than she initially thought. A second wave of bits deploys from what you can now tell is a gargantuan container on the back of a heavily modified Rick Dom, and the bits line up shots on you and your teammate...

Again, two of the bits smash into debris as they maneuver into firing positions. However one still fires a shot at the squad leader who had shot down one of the last wave, and disables his suit. You can tell he's still alive, but out of the fight for now. The other three bits fire at you and Carya, but at this range it's practically child's play to dodge the beams as you close the distance with Schnee Weiss itself.

In return, you and your allies unleash hell back in Schnee Weiss' direction. You can tell that Audrey is frustrated by the lack of a direct line of sight on anything going on in front of her, but Carya manages to nail another bit before letting Catrina take over for the final push towards Schnee Weiss itself. As you approach, two of the GM team score hits on remaining bits, bringing the total number in the area down to just two more. And with a blast from your clay bazooka, you cover the storage container in a thick layer of sludge, then hit the knees for good measure. If the machine had any more bits, it's not going to be launching them now.

This young Newtype is terrified of you, there's no mistaking it. She's so terrified that she smashes another of her bits into a rock... but not so terrified that she can't line up a shot. Perhaps it's easier with fewer bits to control, or maybe she's growing more dangerous the more you back her against the proverbial wall, but the last shot from the last bit comes so fast and so accurate it almost catches you off guard. Thankfully, you manage to intercept the shot with your shield while Carya blasts the offending remote weapon into dust.

You send a burst to the senior surviving GM pilot. “Secure the location while we take care of this. And watch for... Charming.” You frown as you notice a giant mobile armor headed for your position.

“Well THAT didn't take long,” you complain. “Heads up, Charming on an incoming vector, 1 o'clock low.”

“Damn, that fucker's BIG...” Catrina comments. “Look at how many cannons it's got!”

Sure enough, what little of Charming isn't taken up by armor and thrusters seems to be covered in large beam cannons. And what's worse, you get the feeling there's a SECOND Newtype pilot at the stick... and you're supposed to destroy this monster?

The GM-II pilots move into action quickly, firing a volley of beams at Charming, then scrambling to switch to their bazookas as the beams bounce off entirely.

Your orders to your forces?

That's why we hit it with CC's heat rod. That thing uses an electric shock to disable electronics. You're conflicted about staying close to Schnee Weiss under the hopes that Charming won't fire on it and simply charging in: in the end, your discretion gets the better of you, and you squeeze off a sustained burst from your gatling cannon. The giant mobile armor rolls a bit to one side and unleashes a barrage of beams from its own cannons... aimed exclusively at the GM-IIs. Three of the shots hit their targets and obliterate them entirely, one narrowly misses and only takes its intended target's arm off, and the last fails to go off entirely as a chunk of debris impacts its mount and rips it off.

The GMs didn't sacrifice themselves for nothing, however, as their own bazooka rounds are already in flight. Two miss, and two are shot down by Charming in flight, but one manages to slam home, taking out several of the monstrosity's fixed cannons.

Not to let that opening go to waste, Audrey finally got a positive lock, and her 180mm rifle lobs a single high-explosive shell straight into the housing for Charming's I-field generator. You can feel her elation at the perfect shot even as the Newtype pilot tries to fire back. He's not as green as the Schnee Weiss' pilot, though: you barely feel concern register at the loss of his vital equipment, let alone panic.

“YEAH, GET SOME!” Catrina shouts as she unloads her beam machine gun at Charming, adding further damage to what your other comrades have already inflicted. “SUCK ON THAT, YA FUCKSTICK!”

As you take your time to line up a shot, you order Catrina to get to work recovering Schnee Weiss. She does so with a gusto, taking a moment to shock the machine with her heat rod before executing a full burn away from the battlefield. Likewise, the remaining GM-IIs struggle to return to the Anzio.

For a moment, you feel the enemy pilot's emotions... he's not afraid at all, nor is he even angry. If you had to say, you'd think he was curious about you and the sisters... especially the sisters, for obvious reasons. He's curious about who you are and what's brought you to this moment. He knows where your duty lies... he's daring you to do it. He WANTS to see you do it.

As you stare him down across empty space, his casual disregard for his own life in the face of fate is almost enough to give you pause before you blow him away.

Almost.

The 110mm rounds don't do much individually, but together the sheer volume of fire tears through armor plating and into vital systems. Charming slowly erupts into a blossom of fire under your withering barrage of depleted uranium, sending out massive waves of igniting fuel in a spectacular display.

You have to wonder yourself for a moment at the man behind the controls of Charming. Who was he, really? Why was he so ready to meet his end at your hands? But above all else, you realize that he too was a fellow soldier. In a way, you feel like you can understand him, an enemy, better than you understood your own superiors, or the politicians sitting behind desks back in Dakar.

So for a moment, you allow yourself to watch the destruction of Charming... and are confronted by a sudden sensation. You feel as if the man you just fought with can't have gone that easily, as if he's laughing somewhere, alive and well. And then you spot it: a small sphere making its way back towards several large squads of oncoming Axis mobile suits.

“Come on, Dom!” you hear several voices shouting together over your comm. “It's time to get out of here, soldier,” Karen orders, silencing the others. “Return to the Kyongju. Now.”

With a burst from your thrusters, you turn and abandon the field at full throttle, narrowly managing to catch the Kyongju as it begins its return trip to Earth. Flying nearly opposite Axis' orbit, there was no chance for any pursuers to catch up with you now that you had a head start. Their Musais would hae been at least fifteen minutes too late for that.

Maybe we split it with the twins? Like, they give the speech at Dakar, but we get to be Kamille's mentor. And we should steer the boy away from that self righteous revenge boner of his.

So can someone explain the political situation as of now? The only UC I've seen is the 3 movies and 08th MS Team. Who're Axis, and why the Hell do they have Musais that the Feds haven't already blown up?

>>
>>32930397
No it's not. This is like three years after 8th MS let out. Hell, Karen was in that show.

Axis is the remnants of Zeon that fled out of the Federations reach when the war ended.

We're just before 0083 and Stardust Memories.
>>
>>32930378
Many Principality supporters fled the Sides to establish their own setup at Axis, in the asteroid belt: here either an Amor I or II type. Before then it had been a stopover for the Jupiter Energy Fleet, but in canon would be led by Haman Karn as the first Neo Zeon movement.

Right now it's overcrowded, full of political backstabbing, and is still run by Admiral Maharaja Karn as Regent to the last of the Zabis.

Aha, cool. Thanks!
>>
>>32930378
Okay. The OYW didn't end because Zeon was out of men or materiel, it ended because between Gihren, Kycillia and Char they had managed to kill off all their leaders. So the next tier of leadership splintered the Principality into a bunch of loosely aligned groups. The Republic of Zeon is civillian, they're neutral and largely want nothing to do with what the other guys are doing. The Delaz Fleet is hiding out around the moon and are waiting to attack again while supporting lots of holdout guerrilla groups. Said groups are little more than space pirates at this point, but they're still causing trouble. Axis is where the rest fled to, a mining base in the asteroid belt that also served as a waystation for the Jovian Energy Fleet. That's where the real Neo Zeon movement is forming, as they accumulate resources and build a new industrial base.

No no, when we meet him we hve to mistake him for Johnny Ridden.
>>
>>32930603
Oh, definitely. I just wanted it for personal use. But yeah, confusing him for Johnny will be great. And kind of justifiable. Char wasn't actually that feared by the Federation, because he spent so much of his time chasing after the Gundam. In the meanwhile, Johnny Ridden racked up the highest kill count of any Zeon ace, and earned so much notoriety that an automatic promotion was offered for anyone who managed to take him down. And yet his own side keeps confusing his accomplishments for Char's. It's honestly kind of depressing.

No, I'm thinking of a different one. It's, well, I honestly can't remember the character's name and there are a half dozen others that look like him, but he's the captain of a ship and freaking out over the idea of Char coming to show him up. I believe it was from the original series, actually.

"So, anyone up to interrogate our prisoner?" you ask as your team gathers in your hangar, with what remains of the Schnee Weiss lying on the floor immobilized.

Karen nods. "I called the MPs, they'll be here in a few seconds."

Sure enough, it's mere moments before a series of troopers with armored suits and shotguns arrive to secure the area. You wave them away from the captured suit's hatch, before drawing your own sidearm and tapping it hard against the door.

"Open up," you tell the pilot. "I know you're in there, and I know you can hear me."

After a few seconds you hear a hiss as the pressure between the inside of the suit and the hangar equalize, and the hatch swings open. Inside you're surprised to find a young girl, about as old as you were during the war, with bright red hair that borders on pink.

With a wave of your sidearm, you gesture for her to step out of the cockpit, which she does with an unusual degree of poise for one so young.

It's only then that you realize you've never interrogated anyone before.

The politically correct term is "strategically question". We should play to the fact that we're a fellow Newtype, and were around the same age when we had to strt fighting. Get her to like us and she'll be more cooperative.

Yeeaaahhhh.... at this point in the plot she'd just cut her hair, if I recall correctly. There was a whole DEEP SYMBOLIC ANIME HAIR CUTTING scene to it, too. Should be before she kills the mother of Char's unborn child

The whole thing was hit and miss.

As the girl floats to the deck, you follow behind her.

"So, this is the part where I ask you your name and rank and all that stuff, right?" you ask before getting the chance to think.

>20
"You..." she starts. "You've never interrogated someone, have you?" You almost sense indignation in her voice, and you can definitely hear the sound of Karen's palm hitting her forehead.

"No, and I believe the politically correct term is "strategic questioning"." Then, you offer her a quick salute. "Lieutenant Commander O'Hara, EFSF. We'll be taking you into custody, so please state your name and rank for the record."

"I'm a civilian, for one," the redhead replies testily. "God, just my luck. It's amateur hour in here."

"And your name?"

In response, the young Newtype sticks her tongue out at you.

"That's unladylike. I wasn't that rude when I was your age."

"And were you a combat pilot at my age?"

You nod. "Actually, yes. I signed up when I was sixteen."

"Oh..." the redhead mutters. "I see."

She pauses briefly, uncertain as to what to say next. Suddenly, you feel her relax... but only slightly.

"Haman. My name is Haman. No last name."

And I'm calling it here for now. Tomorrow you'll have a chance to "strategically question" Haman further, and the major events of the canon plot will be set into motion.

Thanks for playing, and hope you enjoyed.
