You needed to work on the bigger job first. If you got that out of the way then you could help Nakazawa without worrying about it. It’s not like Nakazawa needed to win or anything. Which was why he was slightly bummed you told him that something came up and that you wouldn’t be able to help him too much today. The Problem Children assembled in your dorm room shortly.

“So, what is the job this time O Fearless Leader?” Asuka started after you had served everyone tea.

“Our good friend Nunotaba wants us to steal a Chemicaloid from STUDY Corporation,” you answered.

You had passed the files on STUDY around. Tadakuni probably didn’t care too much and Kyousuke was still waiting his turn as Sagara pored over the information. You had given them the most salient points though. For her part Asuka was well informed already on STUDY, given her own modest investments.

“So how is this not a kidnapping again?” Kyousuke asked.

“What if we’re actually rescuing them?” Tadakuni posited.

“Either way, I am on board for this endeavour,” Asuka stated, “A crash in their share prices would benefit me greatly.”

You hadn’t thought of that.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves for the moment,” you warned, “We still need to know what exactly the Chemicaloid is, where it’s being kept and the defences. That and I still have to talk Toulour about the job.”

“Nunotaba was working with STUDY correct?” you nodded at Asuka’s question, “Then we could ask her directly.”

“That could compromise her though,” Sagara finally spoke up, “But if Toulour couldn’t find more information about this Chemicaloid I’m not sure how much of a help he’d be.”

“Might as well make sure he doesn’t know anything more,” you disagreed, “Last option is to do our own legwork.”

“I’m good with whatever you decide boss,” Tadakuni said.

“Well I gotta go see Toulour, you guys think you can find more info on your own?” you finally said.

“I’m not sure but I’ll look in to it,” Kyousuke stood up.

“Same here,” Sagara added.

“Good, we’ll meet back up here tomorrow,” you finished.

With that, the group basically disbanded. Asuka had stayed behind but that wasn’t unusual. What was unusual was that even when you called Toulour he had asked to meet up. Apparently he had something to give you. Well it was getting close to dinner so it wasn’t that much of a big deal.

When you finally met up with him, he looked terrible. Rather he seemed tired, eyes swollen red and his usual cheery smile nowhere to be found. You were sitting a private booth at a fancy restaurant, which was also strange. Normally he was fine with some random fast food joint.

“Hey,” he greeted listlessly.

“You look like shit Toulour,” you couldn’t help blurting it out.

“Tell me something new,” he removed his glasses, “I have something for you.”

From under the table he produced a white shoebox. Then he handed it to you. It was wrapped in black ribbons.

“Open it in your own time alright,” he continued, “What can I do for you?”

“Uh thanks,” you replied hesitantly.

You wondered what was inside, half-curious but also half-confused. What brought this on?

“We have business with STUDY Corporation,” Asuka interrupted.

“I see,” he put his glasses back on, “Nunotaba put you up to this?”

“She is the usual suspect yes,” Asuka affirmed, “We shall be stealing their Chemicaloid.”

“Chemicaloids,” Toulour corrected, all business, “You’re in the clear for this.”

“There is more than one?”

“Wait you know more about them?” you caught up to their conversation.

“We know that there’s more than one and we’ve been trying to acquire one for a while now,” he continued, “We would be glad to fence it for you. Anymore questions?”

But seriously, Kiharas are terrifying. They're a semi-bloodline of mad scientists with no sense of self-preservation or morality. For example, Enshuu.

See, some people decided to see if they could reform a Kihara baby. So they locked her in a dark room for her entire childhood and gave her no education and no contact with anything, ever.

She made equations out of a language she built herself, processing chips out of paper, psychological tests out of lamps. She learned science from the way dust floated in the air and the feeling of a plastic cup.

Finally she melted her chains and turned her captors into wax. She didn't even do it to escape. As far as she was concerned that room had everything she'd ever need. She just did it because she wanted to show people she could. She didn't even realize she'd killed people.

Now she's a psychotic killing machine. She can't read or write, so she just analzyes people and takes their skills. She copied Touma's fighting style and crushed someone's torso in with it. And the other Kiharas still see her as a soft failure.

“Which in turn implied sentience,” Asuka added.

“Right that too. I’m not a slave-trader and I don’t want to be.”

“I guess that’s a line you don’t want to cross huh?” Toulour mused, “Anyway, they’re exactly as was described. If you want to know what a Chemicaloid looks like physically then I can’t really help you too much there. I mean they’re artificial humans, they could look like anyone. You probably should have asked Nunotaba, we’ll pay you for the information too.”

“I’ll think about it,” you answered, “How many of them are there then? Two? Three?”

“We don’t know either,” Toulour angrily adjusted his glasses, “At least two.”

“Nunotaba told you to steal their Chemicaloid yes?” Asuka asked you.

You nodded.

“Using that exact phrasing?” you nodded again, “Then if her words were deliberate then it would mean they only possess one.”

“So someone has already stolen the others huh?” Toulour concluded, “I’ll look in to that for you, free of charge. As for where you could start, we’ve earmarked different facilities that looked promising though I can’t guarantee anything.”

“Then I guess that’s all the questions I have, thanks Toulour.”

His melancholic mood returned as he raised his wine glass for you. Dinner after that was a silent affair. Between escorting Asuka home and picking up LO, who seemed to be exhausted from the party, by the time you got home it was late. Not too late that you couldn’t read but there was Toulour’s package that you were curious about. After tucking Last Order in, you decided to,

It was the only photo of them that you had. A faded old black and white photograph of them at their wedding, a wedding between Yuri Torikov and Ilyena Orlov, that’s it. It was way too much to be a coincidence. This was your mother’s gun. What fate that befell her you didn’t know, but it did keep you up all night wondering.

“I, uh,” you really weren’t ready for this, “I’ll just go get cleaned up.”

“That would be wise dear,” Asuka set down a plate of hot sandwiches, “Breakfast is ready.”

Leaving the picture on the table you retreated to the bathroom. A splash of cold water and your senses returned. The questions about your mother, and Toulour, were shoved far down on your mental list of priorities. First, you needed to drop off Last Order. Next you needed to get to work. Maybe at some point later today you’d be able to help Nakazawa while you’re at it.

Level 1 I think. That's the level she started at anyways. Though leveling up is bullshit in general, AC knows what level you're going to hit the second you become an Esper.

Basically

Level 0 = Useless

Level 1 = Minor use, nothing combat-wise

Level 2 = Somewhat useful, or powerful with severe limitations. Espers at this level augment their normal abilities with it.

Level 3 = Pretty good, about the level of a gun at low end to a rocket launcher at the high end (if you're a combat type). You're an elite here.

Level 4 = About the level of a tank or attack helicopter. The best of the best can take on large forces.

Level 5 = Able to take on armies at the low end, near-Gods at the high end

Level 6 = Omnipotence, universe restructuring, that kind of fun stuff.

As for the levels they're fairly vague. The only time esper powers around level 3 are shown are actually in combat. The fire guy in the first episode of Railgun, the guys that became level 3 with the level upper. I'd assume it'd more;
Level 0 - Worthless
Level 1 - Neat, but limited real life use - i.e Uiharu keeping her baked goods warm.
Level 2 - Every day applications, picking up the stuff on the floor for TK, Hightened awareness or responses - The sisters could move the windmills and stuff, but never really used their electricity to fight.
Level 3 - Low-level Combat - That Kyril is at the moment, we move shit and crush people with our power, but we'd get pwned against organized opponents
Level 4 - High level combat - could probably easily fight armed squads/ strong robots/ groups of weak espers.
Level 5 - Lol wut. You're gonna get Pwned, considered far beyond level 4s even at the lower scale.

You also have consider the fact the levels are exponential.

First things first, that quest idea sounds AWESOME, go for it. As far as murder, level 5s are basically unaccountable to anyone short of the Board of Directors, but a level 3 probably couldn't pull it off and a level 4 would need some dark side contacts and probably a patron like ITEM (and even then, they had the benefit of being led by a level 5). Just my 2 cents, though.

There's always Accelerator's school, Nagatenjouki. They beat Tokidawai in alot of things, though they're also extremely frustrated as they haven't been able to make a Level 5.

And no, she just constantly emits a powerful EM field. Misaki's power works through EM waves, so it's blocked. Though she could probably control her own brain waves if she wanted, she's got the calculation power.

I assume it's because Misaki manipulates the electrical signals in the brain or something half-arsed like that, and since Misaka is an electro-master it doesn't work because she has total control over hers. As for the Schools, its never really explained. Tokiwadai is a middleschool, but still competes with Nagatenjouki, which is a high-school. Personally I'd see it in the same manner as soccer clubs, you'll go to say middle-school A, but if you start growing rapidly, middle-school B might try to buy the contract to teach you.

As you came out of the toilet you had already decided. Quickly excusing yourself outside for a bit, you check in on Touma’s roommate, Index. You found her staring at the wall, contemplating something. Of course your entry had prompted her to greet you.

“I need more paper,” she said seriously.

“I can see that,” you replied, “You’re not really running out of material are you?”

“I think I could squeeze some more out of the saga of Dalian and Huey,” she answered, “Do I need to decipher another spell from the Second Progenitor?”

“No, I was wondering if you’d mind some company, you know, like an editor or proof-reader?”

“It is kind of boring without Touma around,” she finally admitted.

“Great, I’ll be right back.”

You called up Toshino to meet up in your dorms with as much paper she could afford to buy. Before she could protest you said you would compensate her for it. She was also going to have to do some babysitting today but she didn’t grumble much about that. All in all, your plan was to have Last Order play with Index and Toshino to look after them. You didn’t trust Index and Last Order to not get in trouble. There was absolutely nothing that could go wrong with this.

With that settled it was time to get down to business.

“Alright lads, what have you got?”

“Two things,” Sagara started, “One, a girlfriend, and two, a way in to their main office.”

“As for me,” Kyousuke eyed Sagara suspiciously, “I’ve got some rumours, could be solid info though. They’ve got their fingers in some pretty shady stuff.”

“Well I got some facilities we could hit,” you added, “The question is what lead should we investigate first?”

“He’s right but we can’t discount that we may encounter powered suits working security,” you weighed in, “We’re not exactly looking for a fight.”

The time is now afternoon, the weather is sunny, and the date remains unchanged.

“They should be,” his answer didn’t engender much confidence.

Of course your girlfriend was hoping for some trouble. All of you had decided to check out the derelict facility. If it was derelict there really shouldn’t be any security left. If ITEM were called in for some cleanup then there definitely was not going to be. All you had to do was hope that they were doing some clean up and not guarding the facility.

“Hold up,” Sagara spoke, “I’m catching intermittent activity inside.

He had held his hand to the wall. The building itself had gaps in the wall, gaps that you were exploiting. Sagara’s skill came in handy here.

“What does it sound like?” you asked.

“One person, some typing, I can’t distinguish it with all this noise.”

“Can’t be ITEM right?” you enquired further, “I thought this was supposed to be abandoned.”

“It’s abandoned alright,” Sagara continued, “I’m picking up wrecked suits all over the place, some of them are still running but they’re physically inert.”

“So what’s the plan boss?” Tadakuni looked raring to go.

“Kyousuke I want you on the roofs, get eyes on the building. Tadakuni, scout ahead, look for our mystery person,” he saluted you and hopped in, “Asuka and I will check out the rest, Sagara can you stay here and track everyone?”

First things first, you had the check the offices, hell maybe even their server room if they had one. Tadakuni should be fine for the most part and it wasn’t like the powered suits were going to be of any use to you. It did bring up the question of where STUDY found enough suicidal guinea pigs to pilot them if they were as mangled as Sagara made them out to be. Maybe it was worth checking out later. For now though you were content to search the rest of the building with Asuka. The both of you had your weapons out though both were lowered.

Most the computers were trashed, stolen or only half functioning. The ones that did didn’t have much data on them but you did figure out where the central server was though. You did notice some cabinets that were easily pried open with The Dean. No shipping manifests though, there were only manufactory reports. If there was anything to be said about STUDY it was that they were industrious. The server however yielded more information. They didn’t make sense to you see as it was just a bunch of numbers. Asuka however seemed to glean some kind of information from it.

“These are coordinates, we’re going to run them through a mapping program later,” she started jotting them down, “The other numbers could be anything though.”

The both of you took note of as much as you could. There wasn’t a USB port at the terminal for some reason.

“Kyril we have a problem,” Kyousuke messaged in, “Looks like someone just arrived in a van. I can’t see him too well but he definitely went in.”

“I can confirm that, he’s heading towards our mystery guest,” Sagara added.

“And Tadakuni?”

“He went silent,” was Sagara’s reply, “I can’t hear him when he uses his Ability.”

This is dependent on his ability to apply constant force to a moving object, which might be trivial if his own body is the reference point for his power, but we don't have much to go on with how his 'point of force' moves.

AC itself utilizes Anti-Esper systems. The Reformatory (Esper prison) has methods to disperse AIM and weaken Espers (though it still has the highest fatality rate out of every job in AC, besides maybe Hound Dogs).

They don't use them more widely because they require huge amounts of power, so they can only protect static locations. The Board of Directors generally guard their homes with similar devices as well.

Therestina was disavowed by AC, yes. Capacity Down isn't really anything bad though. AC uses it in 19 I think.

With that you continued to assist Asuka in physically transcribing some of the terminal’s data. There was recurring coordinates so those were the ones you prioritised. Along with the numbers you had a history of their movements of what you assumed were powered suits, across the city.

“Kyril we have more incoming,” Kyousuke added.

“The guys in the van are getting out, looks like salvage tools.”

There went the chance to check out the powered suits you mused. Only five minutes later did you finish. Your way out was barred by the salvage technicians, which you heard loudly cursing as they tried to get their machines to work. Sagara didn’t have much trouble keeping track of them but they were making a bit of a ruckus. Both you and Asuka took a more roundabout path towards the exit. It also led you closer to the mysterious person at the console.

“Shit boss you won’t believe this, it’s Nunotaba,” Tadakuni probably figured it out from the sound of her voice, “I think the one she’s talking to is arguing with her.”

“Should we bail her out, as they say?” Asuka asked.

She was probably looking forward to cracking some skulls. From where you were you could make out the figure point a handgun towards a room which you assumed Nunotaba was in. Tadakuni said he was right on top of them so that probably meant the vents. There were loose objects lying around though so you could distract him. Or you could knock him out.

You gave Asuka a look. She was eager, of that you were sure. The Dean’s red glow seemed to intensify as well. If she wanted this then you really didn’t feel like stopping her. You gave her a nod and a pat on the back. Then she was off. Not faster than you could blink but it was as amazingly fast as ever. You were hot on her heels though much too far. The safety came off as you made sure to watch her back.

She didn’t cut him down immediately. His reaction was slow as she slapped his arm hard with the flat of her blade. Upon closer inspection you recognised his face. Aritomi Haruki, supposed CEO of STUDY and two time consecutive winner of the ACRE Assembly best project award, lost grip of his pistol. It has hard to hold on to it given how his arm had snapped at such an awkward angle. At least he had the sense to back off further down the hall, yelling for help as he did so.

“The salvage guys are heading your way,” Sagara needlessly informed.

Aritomi had fallen flat on his arse and was backing up as fast he could. The broken arm and the terror on his face seemed to egg Asuka on. You walked past an inwardly confused Nunotaba, gun ready.

“Fuck, fuck, who are you working for,” he wasn’t exactly grovelling just yet, “I’ll you double.”

He was stalling.

“Shall I kill him dear?” Asuka asked.

“He’s the CEO,” Asuka pouted, “But you can deal with the other two as you wish.”

She brightened at that and continued down the hall. Sagara was directing her now. You turned back to your unexpected windfall.

“Is that what you want? Money? I got that,” okay now he was grovelling.

You needed information. You were going to get it. It was just a question of how rough you wanted to be.

There aren't any major characters who are pyrokinetics is the issue. Probably because Kamachi figures he already has Stiyl. All that stuff would vary by Esper though.

Stiyl has some cool abilities if you're interested in that. Creating mirages, detecting enemies via their body heat, using the smoke from a cigarette to diagnose people, changing people's appearance by burning their faces and healing it into a different face. He's way more than just a guy who throws around fire.

“I need information,” you started.

“We were setting them up for security around the ACRE Assembly,” he replied quickly now.

“Sounds like bullshit to me,” you asked Nunotaba instead, “What’s his game toots?”

“He wants to attack to ACRE Assembly,” she answered evenly.

You turned his own gun on his other hand. Now both of them were out of action. He was probably here because of her but as to the specifics well,

“She fucking betrayed us.”

Your foot applied itself slowly on his ruined arm.

“Something like a Chemicaloid?”

His eyes widened. You raised your gun again so he nodded quickly.

Aritomi didn’t need knees at the moment. He started sobbing now.
