In a World of Darkness and Light, Monsters and Men, Dragons and Griffins, Witches and Mages, Heroes and Legends, Kingdoms and Empire's, there is much strife and war. Peace in all four corners of the world is a very rare thing of beauty. Kings and Emperors are fighting for power and land on both battlefields and at court. However, you're not part of this struggle for power, not yet. For reasons unknown you don't remember your life as a human nor the torture you went through to become what you are today; A twisted being of dark magic, your body has been mutilated and corrupted beyond its limits. However, like many dark beings before you, you've been chained by the power that rules behind the scenes of politics and war in this world; The Holy Church.

Created by darkness and leashed by the light, you're a monster under the Church's will. You are an Inquisitor, the last of its kind. Once a man, twisted by magic, you now serve the Church as a hunter or a judge against monsters, witches, renegade mages and all the evil that oppose the holy order.

You take a step through the portal and find yourself in the middle of a no mans lands; The trees are dead, the lands are barren, burned and scarred. Black and dead. The are weapons and even old and almost fresh corpses strewn about. There are many signs that show that this and all the land around you has suffered from the war for a very long time and even old scars remain. Something you know quite well. From behind you hear the sound of footsteps and looking back you see Commander Autumn walking through the portal. She's in a daze at first before she catches herself.

“First time I've used a rune portal!”, she exclaims with a smile before she notices you and looks away in shame, turning back to her serious old self. A few seconds after her arrival, Benjamin comes stumbling through the portal, takes three steps and then throws up his small breakfast. “That was the first time...”, he tries to catch his breath with his hands resting on his knees. Rising up, he finally notice the lands all around you. “When do we get to the Hinterlands?”

You ignore Benjamin and start to walk North while Autumn gives him a sad look, “This is the Hinterlands...”, and grabs his left shoulder, “I'm sorry”, she says before starting to follow you. Benjamin is stunned at first, but eventually runs after the two of you before matching your pace. He's clearly depressed from this new revelation.

"Many a man has been affected by this war, Benjamin; You're not the first one.", you tell him off before turning your head slightly towards where Autumn is walking behind you, "Do you know any nearby town or still standing cities?"

She only sighs at you, "Shouldn't you know that, Inquisitor?". Silence returns to the party once more as you continue to march North. She had a point though. You should know, but the city you visited last time you were here was destroyed in the last battle between the Monsters and the Holy order from what you've heard. No point visiting a couple of ruins.

"There's always Riverhill.", she reminds you of the fishing town close to the small western coast in the Hinterlands. It was one of the few places that the war had yet not touched. You could go there for a detour, or you could continue marching North.

Although there was a bad rumour floating around about cannibalism at Riverhill due to bad catch this season.

No words were needed; you lead the party north-west and they followed you. This was Benjamin's first time here and Autumn probably only knew of Riverhill from some book she had read about the Hinterlands. At least you knew the way, but you had initially wanted to stay away due to the rumours and because it was clearly a detour, albeit a short one.

It takes 4 hours to reach Riverhill by foot since you can't remember how the Town looked like or its surroundings and Benjamin would most certainly refuse to teleport again for a while. Not that you couldn't force him, but why press the matter?

The town is quite different than Oaksberry; Its walls are reinforced and higher than Oaksberry's weak and short walls. Half of the town is on landmass while the remaining has been built over a sturdy wooden floor over the sea supported by several thick steel poles stuck in the water. It's quite the sight to see the ingenuity of humans, no matter how small a feat it is.

The decision comes easy; You will wait outside to avoid unecessary attention while Benjamin and Autumn goes inside to get food and maybe even find out if those rumours are true. Autumn scoffs at the rumours, but Benjamin is visible concerned as he follows his commander and love into the town.

Hours trickle by as you remain hidden in the outskirts of the town, sitting behind two boulders neatly placed by mother nature. You've been meditating while you've been waiting on your companions. Nightfall eventually comes and they've yet to return.

Rising up, you realize you have a decision to make.

There's no point leaving them behind, at least not yet. While rushing into town, sword drawn, might get you to them a bit faster, you choose to try and not spill so much blood for once; Sneaking in it is! By the cover of night, you make your way through the shadows, closing in on the closed gate. Prying it open would be a mistake as it will most certainly alert any guards. No, instead you hug the wall and make your way around it, towards the end of it and where the sea begins.

However, you don't go all the way, as that area would be heavily guarded and watched due to the structural weakness. You stop halfway and after backing a few steps, you rush forward and leap up against the wall. Grabbing onto the top of the wall, you climb on to its walkway and before any of the patrolling guards turn about to find a dark being on their walls, you jump down amidst the houses.

Now the real problem begins; Where is Benjamin and Autumn? Neither one of them has an aura and they haven't used light magic recently from what you can tell. You feel no magic at all in this town. Where should you look for them?

While the thought should make you shutter, it doesn't faze you in the least; If the rumours are true, that's the place you'll find them. Dead or alive. Rising up from your kneeling position where you were hiding from the guards in the shadows, you cross several streets, keeping a watchful eye out for any patrolling guards and the Butcher's shop.

After 20 minutes of carefully jumping between the different dark alleyways between the houses, you finally spot what looks like the butchers shop by the end of the street. However, you also spot three guards outside the entrance.

Making your way closer, you soon realize that there's only one entrance to the shop and making a new one was out of the question if you still wanted to remain undetected. To maintain your stealth profile and get into the shop, you had a good idea of what you could do.

Killing them or even knocking them out was very risky; Anyone could come by to check up on them and either find their bodies or the posts empty if you hide the bodies. No, instead you decide to wait, listen and observe the three guards.

"...No idea wha' Runt was thinkin' when she attacked dem new folks.", one of the guards whispered to his brothers, scratching the back of his head under his helmet, "I mean, wasn' one of 'em a holy man, er, woman?"

"Sure thing she was.", the fattest of them replies. The scuffle about at their posts, not very serious about their duty. All three of them are lightly armed with iron shields in hand and bronze shortswords hanging by their hips.

The inside of the butchers shop is very quiet. You can't tell whether or not the commander and the squire is in there. They could be somewhere else, but from the sound of what the guards said, someone attacked Autumn.

>A. Knock the guards out by punching them.

While the information shed some light on what happened, you still don't know for certain if these so-called 'guards' are guarding Benjamin and Autumn or something else, possible related to the rumours, far fetched as they may be. You continue to sit still in the shadows, listening in on the guards and observe them.

"What do yu' reckon the chief and the others be talkin' 'bout?", the tallest of them ask, obviously very curious. The shortest one remains quiet, but the fat one throws the tall one a dirty look.

"Don't you mind wha' the chief be doin' and what the others be talkin' 'bout.", he spits on the ground before the entrance of the shop, "All I care for are 'em holy people in here. They ain't gunna stay like that foreva'."

That's all you needed to know; Benjamin and Autumn is being held inside the shop and they're still alive and hopefully they still have all their limbs too. Now to deal with the guards.

For a dark being created to meet his foes head on in battle, you're quite good at assassination as well; You move out from your hiding spot at the side of the butcher shop and as the distance between you and the guards grow closer, you pull out your stiletto. This will get a bit bloody, but not as messy at it would have been had you decided to use your main weapon.

Catching the closest guard by surprise, you press the tip of the stiletto deep into his throat with your hand over his mouth. Before the second guard has noticed you, the stiletto has left the dead guards throat and moved into the next one, puncturing both skin and the blood arteries within. The last guard has noticed you and his eyes are wide in fear as he opens his mouth to scream.

Not a sound leaves him but a grunt though as you spin around, moving forward as you do so and punch him right across the cheek, sending him flying into butcher shop's open door. With great ease, you pull the two corpses into the shop as well just in case. There's nothing you can do about the small pools of blood outside the shop though. One can only hope no patrolling guards are coming by any time soon with a lantern or lit torch in hand. Turning around, you notice that it was the short one that you punched across the face. He's whimpering on the ground, muttering "Please don't kill me.", repeatedly.

"What have you done with the Templar and the boy?", the dark metallic voice must have brought back horrible memories of when monsters and Dark beings used to raid the villages nearby Riverhill, because he soils himself in fear. You will use this fear if you want him to answer any questions.

You hate repeating yourself over such trivial matters. While the smell of piss doesn't bother you in the least, his whimpering is slightly getting on your nerves. "Where is the female Temlar and the holy man?", the question is clear and so is your intention if he fails to answer you; grabbing onto him, you hold the tip of the stiletto covered in his friends blood awefully close to his throat. He swallows hard as his eyes shift between the knife and your reptilian eyes behind the mask in a fit of panic.

"T-they a-are i-i-in t-the back!", he almost cries out, but your knife moves closer towards his throat and he quickly lowers his voice. You realize that you could ask him about the rumours, but since you're already in the butchers shop, you wager you'll find out the truth one way or the other. His usefullness has run out and with a punch across his face, you break his jaw and beat him out cold.

Rising up, you clean off the blood on your knife, reattach it to your belt and proceed into the back of the shop, behind the counter. You can hear loud voices coming from the street outside the shop. Whether it's a guard who has spotted the pool of blood or some other people, you can't t tell, but you can tell that they are far off, so you're probably okay for now. Moving into the backroom, you see a lot of meatslabs that are too big to come from humans strung onto meathooks hanging on to the ceiling. Like a dance, you move with graciously between the frozen meatslabs while looking for your companions. Soon enough you find them.

Both of them are hanging by their hands in chains around a meathook each. They are gagged with cloth. Benjamin is the first to notice you and starts to shout through his cloth piece, much to the dismay of Autumn who kicks him.
>>
>>33493773

Sparing no time on formalities with this man, you sprint forward and leap on to him from behind with your stiletto in hand, thrusting it into his neck and throat repeatedly. He tries to scream, but only blood shoots out from his mouth and it builds up to cover his chest in dark red. A few seconds after you've left his back, he stumbles about trying to hold on to the nearest meatslab for support. He's looking at you with disgust burning in his eyes before he falls to the ground, the pool of blood underneath him growing steadily.

You turn around and rip the chains off of your companions hands. Autumn makes a gracious landing while Benjamins legs fail him and he falls to the floor. After helping him up, Autumn turns to you.

"Took you long enough.", she hiss at you, clearly quite angry and annoyed. Ignoring her, you follow the two of them out from the Butchers shop. However, as you step outside, several torches and lanterns quickly surround you from all directions.

"Now, what do we have here? Intruders, criminals and...", the voice pauses, probably looking at the pool of blood before you, "...murderers.", the voice is that of an educated man, you can hear it from his smug tone and the fact that he speaks better than any of the fools you've been dealing with in this town tonight. His he this 'chief', they spoke of or someone else?

"We are emessaries of the Holy order! You have no right to--", Autumn starts to lecture the man, but the crowd around you erupts into laughter. "See, missy, that's where you're wrong; The so-called 'holy order' abandoned us years ago. They aren't the ones who has kept this town safe from monsters and creatures like your friend here. No, that'd be us."

You can feel the thick tension in the air; Autumn has her hand around the grip of her sword and Benjamin looks really uneasy. The few faces you can see through the illuminating light in the dark shows determined faces filled with fear in their eyes. They fear you, but they've also learned how to deal with monsters like you. They've probably killed holy men and women before too.

Taking a step forward, you hold your hands out in a peaceful manner. Some of the torches and lanterns around you start to back off, but stop when they notice that your hand is not moving for the large weapon strung on to your back. "Allow us to leave and we shall trouble you no more.", the proposition is sound to your ears and hopefully to theirs as well. They will only gain your equipment and the wrath of the Holy Order from your death. You can't say what they've would have done if Benjamin or Autumn was killed, but probably nothing as drastic as the things they'll do if they lose their Inquisitor. You curse for calling yourself 'theirs'.

"So far you've taken three lives and ripped loved ones away from their families and near relatives. Even the Order would agree that this demands retribution, especially when a dark being caused it.", the man calls out over the crowd. None of them is advancing, but his words were hostile nonetheless. What will they do? The answer comes out from behind the crowd; a long whip made out of dark red blood strikes forward. You evade it thanks to your inhumane reflexes, but you hear a screech from behind. Benjamin is lying on the ground, a gash across his chest. He's bleeding!

With little time on your hands until the next attack that is most likely aimed for Autumn comes, your decision is made!

You've had a shitty week so far; Forced to sleep in the cold dungeon when you could sleep outside or in a warm bed, maker forbid; you had to deal with Benjamin's shit more than usual, not that you complained, but part of him is annoying; you've been threatened more times than you can count and now this shit?

"No.", you say outright as you pull out your sword, letting it drop to the street as you grip it before raising it up and rushing in. You see the whip fly forward, past you, but you plan to kill the owner before it connects. Blasting straight through the crowd, sending several people flying and their lanterns and torches hit the ground along with them. The holder of the whip watches as your distance to him grows closer, but he cannot stop you; Creating a new blood spell would take too much time compared to the speed you're running at. Your blades slice through his skin, meat, muscles, organs and bones like a warm knife through butter. You stop a meter behind the man, blood dripping from your blade. The man coughs once before his upper body and lower body part ways, falling to the ground.

The majority of the crowd disperse, but a couple of them charge at you with their meatcleavers and bronze swords! In a dance of flurry, you parry, cut, parry, thrust, parry, and behead your way around the attacking men and women. In the end, you stand triumphly in the midst of a bloodbath, corpses strewn around everywhere and blood painting and soaking into the very dirt between the missmatched cobblestones that is the street of Riverhill.
>>
>>33495879

"Amazing.", you hear Autumn mutters, before she realizes that Benjamin is wounded and drops to her knees next to him, chanting holy words while holding her hands over his chest. The wound doesn't heal, but the bloodflow from it slows down immensively.

"I cannot heal a wound made by blood magic in such a short time. We need to find a safe place before I can fully heal him.", she explains. You pick him up and with Autumn in tow, you both run through the streets towards the gates. Upon reaching them, you see six guards with their shields and shortswords at the ready, but you've had your fun for tonight. You excelerate and smash straight through their formation and through the gate. Autumn comes running after you.

After running for 2 hours, you're certain that you're not being followed. You place Benjamin with his back against a tree and sit yourself down on a nearby rock while Autumn goes to work on the squire.

"Much better.", is the compliment you recieve from her before she starts to chant her holy spell again.

No point getting in Autumn's way while she's clearly busy with Benjamin and with no holy magic at hand, you can't help her or the squire. You decide to scout around the area to make sure the towns people are not following you or if there's anything else of use or dangerous nearby.

In the far distance, you spot a farm with three houses and smoke rising from two of their chimneys. You continue to scout, but make sure to remember the location of the farm. You find another field belonging to the no mans land and an entire town burned to the ground. Nothing of worth lies in these ruins and so, you move on.

With nothing dangerous or really useful around, you return to the spot where you left Benjamin and Autumn. Benjamin is no longer holding his breath from the pain and is sleeping soundly. Autumn is sitting next to him by the tree, leaning her head on his shoulder. The second she notice you, she flies up, her cheeks red in the night and stands with a straight back in your presence.

"Did you find anything?"

>A. "Nothing."
>B. Tell her about the ruins
>C. Tell her about the farm
>D. Tell her to get some sleep and that you will resume the journey north tomorrow; you'll hold guard during the night.

"I found a farm of three houses, two of which is inhabitated up north and there's a ruin of a burned down town to the east. There's nothing else of note in this forsaken land.", you report to Autumn. She's annoyed by your statement.

"No land is forsaken, Inquisitor.", she points out, her finger directed at you accusingly, "The maker protects all his children from evil and the Abyss.", she proclaims quietly this time after Benjamin let out a loud snoring sound.

"I can see the grace of your maker all around us. Death, destruction and decay.", you've argued with holy men and women before regarding the so-called 'Makers grace', and not once have you succeeded to get through to them when it came to their religion. Autumn turned out to be the same as she starts to rant on and off about the history of the Holy Order and everything the Maker has done for his children and servants and how ungrateful everyone is. You turn your back to her and walk away.

Setting up rune circles around the camp proves to be an easy task and before you know it, you've created several traps that will shock anyone stepping on them and alert their presence to you. Even though you find it hard to believe anyone willing to ambush you is out there tonight, you still do it for Benjamin's sake. Maybe you're growing soft on him? Once you return to the small camp site, you find Autumn sleeping in a sitting position next to Benjamin. she must have been really tired.

It's time to meditate to figure out what Austec is doing up in the Iron Kingdom and what he wants to do with those three holy scrolls. There's something you're missing, the piece of the puzzle that is needed to see the whole picture...

These thoughts fill your head as the night goes on and soon the morning comes. Today you will set off towards the Iron Kingdom again and in two days, you'll reach its borders to the Hinterlands.

You're ready to face the Dwarves.

///

That's all for tonight folks. I had hoped to reach the Iron Kingdom by this thread, but we got into shenanigans in Riverhill instead. As always, I'll stick around if anyone has any questions or feedback.

Remember to follow my Twitter to see when I start again tomorrow or on sunday!

that was great glad I could be here for it also Austec stole scrolls detailing how to make inquisitors and plans to make his own inquisitors bound to serve him and while we fight him he will bring this up and possibly do something involving our chains, how close am I? ANother posibility as that the church truly is evil and Austec needs to make his own inquisitors to oppose them

heh we'll see, maybe instead he stumbled upon the origin of Inquisitors and it shocked him to his core and made him question the church as to what his plans are well its hard to say but if this is why he fled the church then I don't think that he plans to make more inquisitors.
>>
>>33497278
This quests small userbase have agreed that one of the scrolls must include the origin/or means to create an Inquisitor. If that is the case, what is then written in the other two scrolls? Or are all three scrolls about Inquisitors in different aspects?
