@QMKingofHearts.

The date is October 12th, UC 0083. You are Lieutenant Commander Dominic O'Hara: Gundam pilot and apparently some kind of pied piper for Newtype women, if the way things have been going is any indication. Yesterday you engaged a large force of Zeon remnants and nearly wiped them out. After capturing the few survivors, interrogating a secretary who offered you a few useful tidbits on the information leak that caused the attack, and seeing to your team's well-being, you finally called it a day and turned in.

Today you'll have to deal with the physical damage to your machines, as well as consider how to follow up on your few precious leads regarding Zeon's plans for the coming days. The sisters have already left your room to get back to work, and you can feel that the rest of your crew is scattered around the La Vie en Rose: Audrey and Haman are with the sisters in your team's temporary hangar, Rossweisse and Karen are exercising, and Reiko is apparently watching over your new secretary/informant, Ms. Blitzen, as she eats.

Now... where to begin?

Well I'd like to spend some time with Rossweisse and get to know her, but getting our broken suits repaired should be our top priority

Also, the internet and actual electrical power in my building isn't too reliable at the moment. So there may be a few delays.

Hey, got a question: what's so bad about cyber newtypes?
Like I get that choosing ptsd victims, and repeatedly brainwashing them or forcing them to fight their loved ones, all while treating them like tools, is really, really dumb. But what does our character consider the idea of cybernewtypes to be inherently evil?
I mean, if you chose stable adult volunteers I'd consider it a positive

Hanging out with Karen's chill, but I like Haman, So we'll watch our suits get fixed, Gouf, Hizak Gundam.
>>
>>33654998
The process of making them is cruel and punishing. Drugs don't always play well with bodies, not to mention possible brain implants.
>>
>>33654998
Because the process itself of forcibly 'uplifting' a person to a cyber-newtype turns them into drug dependent psychopaths, and we can feel the suffering they they've been through. I guess.

Really the only Cyber-Newtypes that really worked were the Puru's because they were genetically constructed, so they were mentally stable, and also didn't have a drug dependency.

>>33654999
I don't mind doing this, but we need a mobile suit to get us there, and we broke them all.
>>
>>33654998
>why are cybernewtypes bad

The human experiments made the Spanish Inquisition, the Soviet gulags, and about everything else look tame. I mean, it's not often somebody gets their soul trapped in the body of a machine and drives the pilot insane.
>>
>>33654998
Basically, making someone a cyber-newtype usually ends up with them suffering with 20 various kinds of mental illness. Even the most stable person gets violent mood swings (at best), needs meds to cope with the stress, occasional Synapse Syndrome (where the signals form the brain get confused and cause extreme pain which can kill you) and so on.
>>
>>33655126
>we need a mobile suit

What are shuttles.
>>
>>33655159
You actually trust Zeeks enough that they wouldn't ignore their commander's orders and hide in a mobile suit and ambush us? Damn sympathizer.
>>
>>33655131
I think the only stable recipient of the procedure was Gyunei Guss. Gyunei was no crazier than any other major character in Gundam (which is still pretty crazy, to be fair). Everyone else experienced either manic tendencies or emotional withdrawal.
>>
>>33655205
No, I mean. The station has shuttles. We don't need a Gendum for a quick jaunt over to a rekt Musai just to download horsedick.mpeg.
>>
>>33655254
I might have phrased that poorly. There was a Gelgoog in that carrier. There were Zeeks in that carrier. There is a possibility that these two things have been combined. So we get there in a shuttle, the Zeek gets in the Gelgoog, and kills us.
>>
>>33655245
Full Frontal as well, for a certain meaning of stable.

Also Banagher, though he had cyber enhancements, not the full package.
>>
>>33655307
That particular can of worms is dead, Jim. He either suffocated when his O2 ran out or he got on the damn train when it was leaving the station. If you're really that paranoid then have our mobile armor escort us.
>>
>>33655341
>Full Frontal as well, for a certain meaning of stable.
Well, he was mostly stable, I guess. He did get pretty crazy towards the end, though whether that's the result of being a Cyber-Newtype or the psychological stress of being haunted is less clear. But up until then he had possibly the only plan for Spacenoid autonomy that wasn't based on genocide, so he was saner than 90% of Zeon's leadership.
>>
Back again. Entire floor of my apartment shat itself, so I went to my lab. Sorry for the delay.

>>
>>33655307
The crew of the ship have been taken into custody. It's possible the Gelgoog has been set to automatically fire its beam rifle, though. We'll see.
>>
>>33655469
Thought we trashed his rifle during our HEROIC SPEECH.
>>
>>33655500
Yeah, we shot it out of its hands. But there could be spares.
>>
>>33655126
Zero was pretty damn stable too. I don't think he had any of the Cyber Newtype neurosis.
>>
>>33655381
Really? You don't think a Spaceship doesn't have spare oxygen tanks in it? Also, the Mobile Armor won't fit in the Hanger, I guess we could make just the GP03 escort us.
>>33655469
They weren't taken into custody. They were told to get in the Komusai. Someone could have quite easily stayed behind and ignored the secretary's order.

>>33655500
>>33655521
There could be spares, or they could just fuck us up with a Beam Naginata.
>>
>>33655547
Didn't see send a boarding crew over too, though? Or did we never actually get around to it?
>>
>>33655578
Think we just gave them ample time for them to move themselves.

You hate to admit it, but you're going to need to go and see Reiko briefly to check in on the status of that computer Ms Blitzen gave you the access codes for. As much as you'd enjoy taking the time to chat with them, there's just too much to be done.

You find that the two secretaries are finishing their breakfast in silence, and even at a distance you can feel a tension between them so strong you can almost see their anger radiating towards each other.

"I feel like you're about to go at it with your spoons," you comment, leaning over the edge of their table. "Can I talk to you for a moment, Reiko?"

"Sure thing, sir," the Sergeant replies, never taking her eyes off her formerly-Zeon opposite. "What do you need?"

"The computer recovered yesterday from that Musai, where is it?"

"In our hangar, charging. You going to test this woman's 'gift' to us?"

You nod, even though Reiko probably can't see you from where she's sitting. "Yep. Figure it'd go a long way towards figuring out what Zeke is up to."

"Is she always like this, or do you normally keep her on a leash?" Blitzen asks coldly, taking a dig at her cereal.

This won't fucking do.

No I'll stand my ground. A tightly controlled federation would; wouldn't sell Char a giant rock he can throw at Earth, deal with that box bullshit because it's irrelevant, stop the rise of Cosmo Babylonia, Crush the Jupiter empire, and slap Zanscare in the face.
A-Laws were right too.
>>
>>33655677
"She'd probably break my arms if I tried putting a leash on her. Play nice. Both of you."
>>
>>33655796
I'm not disputing that. I'm saying that if you want to maintain order, building your organization on a foundation of poison gas and insane telepaths is a bad way to go about it.
>>
>>33655677
"Oh, for the love of Christ, would you two just calm down already? You may not like each other, but at least TRY and keep things civil?"

"Should I consider that an order?" Reiko asks.

"If it's the only way to keep you two from killing each other, yes. Consider it an order."

Sergeant Hollinger sighs, then turns to face you. "Right. I'll give her a chance, on one condition."

"You're demanding conditions now?" Blitzen asks incredulously.

Reiko ignores her. "I'll treat the ex-Zeke whose unit tried to kill you and the rest of us nicely if you'll agree to pay more attention to your mission briefings."

"It's a deal," you reply.

Blitzen falls silent and looks away from you.

The hangar is a whirr of activity. Anaheim techs are busy readying your machines to return to battle, with Lucette and Emary drifting back and forth across the room shouting orders. Welding torches and plasma cutters light up the area with brief yet intense flashes as the workers cut and shape segments of Gundarium alloy that you can barely identify.

Against one wall, you spot the members of your team clustered against the wall. The computer you're looking for, which belonged to the Captain of the Musai cruiser that led yesterday's assault on the La Vie en Rose, sits next to them.

And all of those we've met so far want Dom's dick, so we don't have to worry about them. Until we meet some male Newtypes, anyway. Though even then, who knows?

On that note, I'm hoping we get to meet the Albion crew. Because Bernard Monsha's response to us would be hilarious. He'd go up thinking we were some dumb rookie, only for us to reveal that we're actually a One Year War veteran too, and to make matters worse our kill count is much larger than his. And then when he's already fuming about that, he'll see that our entire unit is made of attractive women, 40% of whom are romantically interested in us. And then he'll just cry at the unfairness of it all. Oh, and we already know Nina, just to rub salt in the wound.
>>
I've been thinking, Axis is moving about 2 years early right? Which means it'll appear in 0085 rather than 0087. Whilst this means we won't see some cool suits like the Bawoo, it also means AEUG won't yet exist. Surely it'll also mean that they get BTFO by a united EF, and also at the same time prove the Titans right, and legitimize their rule. This will probably also mean the AEUG is less likely to exist, because popular opinion is both with the Titans, and dissatisfaction with their regime would be minimal. Does this mean the Gryps Conflict would happen much later? Maybe at the same time as CCA?
>>
>>33656918
Don't forget Char's now acting independently and has a third of the Axis forces with him.
>>
>>33656216
Whatever the others are doing, it'll probably end up involving you at some point regardless of what you do. Plus, it's not like you're sneaking in or anything: three of them are Newtypes, and they've all realized you're here. So you figure you might as well try and get something done before your input is required elsewhere.

The black laptop is a pretty beefy model, clearly meant to be used aboard a spacecraft where it could conceivably spend all day bouncing off the the walls and ceilings. "Wow," you mutter as multiple error codes show up against a blue screen. "What the hell did he do to this machine?"

"He probably triggered a fail-safe of some kind that fucked with the computer itself, likely just his own saved data," Audrey tells you as she looks over your shoulder. "Weird that it let you sign in, though. Oddly specific."

"Can you recover any of what was on it?" you ask. "Also, good morning, Audrey."

"Good morning, Commander," she replies, "and yes. I may be able to recover it, but I'd probably need to work with someone around here who's better at this sort of thing than I am."

You sigh, shaking your head in disbelief. "Things can never be simple with us, can they?"

Audrey laughs to herself. "Not where computers are concerned, at least. Speaking of which, I figured out why I couldn't hit anything yesterday."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, the rangefinding system wasn't sending any data to the targeting system, so I could never get a lock," she explains. "It took me entirely too long to figure out, but at least I know now that it wasn't just me."

You give her a smile. "See, I said you were better at this than you thought, didn't I?"

"Yes, sir."

You have to stop thinking in terms of canon events. We've already jumped right off the tracks. It is not at all clear what Axis is going to do, or how the Titans will respond. For the moment at least, it looks like Axis is joining up with the Mars Zeon remnants and starting the Oldsmobile Army early. So who knows what they're going to build or when they'll deploy them? Though personally I'm expecting them to build their own equivalent of the Rick Dias.
>>
>>33656918

>>33657007
Yeah. The thing is the Oldsmobile army is based on later tech, so more than likely they'd only be able to make stuff equivalent to that at the moment.

>>33657138
>Yeah. The thing is the Oldsmobile army is based on later tech, so more than likely they'd only be able to make stuff equivalent to that at the moment.
Well, yes, it won't literally be the Oldsmobile Army. If for no other reason than that the One Year War isn't so long ago for designs inspired by the suits of that time to be considered old-fashioned. I'm thinking the Rick Dias, though, because a lot of the tech in it came from Axis, brought to AE by Char when he adopted the Quattro Bajeena persona. It's basically a mix of the Gelgoog and the Rick Dom, with lighter armor due to using the stronger Gundarium Gamma alloy that was developed at Axis. So I wouldn't be surprised if the main mass production suits of Mars Zeon are identical to it save for some aesthetic differences.
>>
>>33657236
We can have her check the computer systems later on. While we're doing repairs, she can check that laptop, then have her go through the targeting software just in case.
>>
So how do those guided mines work? The way I figure it, having a Newtype practice with guided missiles seems way easier than having to use funnels and try to aim and dodge shots with them.

Instead of space on an rechargable E-caps, just have them use non-recharable batteries, and fire them into the enemy en-masse. Suddenly the Federation's Guided missle doctrine becomes quasi-relevant again.

I dunno what the hell's the difference with space-mines or whatever, but I figure with newtype missles, you just focus on overwhelm the enemy with a fuckton of missiles, which would seem to be easier and less stressful for a Cyber-Newtype.
>>
>>33657283
The Rick Dias isn't all that interesting tbh and I also think the Dreissen is a better target of mass production, since it's reminiscent of a OYW mech, and we all know how much the Zeeks love their nostalgia goggles.
>>
>>33656993
"Lucette!" you shout into the hangar.

"What!?" the technician shouts back. "I'm kinda busy!"

"You have some programming nerds on this station, right!?"

"You need one!?"

"Kinda!"

"Okay! MacDowell! Get yourself over there!" Lucette shouts at a pale, spindly looking young man with... hipster glasses. And a neckbeard.

Way to reinforce the stereotypes, asshole.

"MacDowell," you address the man as he floats towards you. "Get this Zeke computer working again, on the double."

"... yes, Commander," the programmer sighs dramatically. "Right away, Commander."

"And none of the sass," you add.

Audrey raises an eyebrow. "So, would you like to see my report on the damage?"

"Would I ever," you reply tonelessly.

The Ensign hands you a dataslate with both an updated roster and status reports on your machines...

>Current Roster (Decreasing order of Rank)

The guided missile doctrine is coming back into its own even without psycommu missiles. New tracking mechanisms better able to pierce Minovsky interference are already available, they're just not cheap yet. But considering the cost of psycommu receivers, there's probably not a major cost efficiency to be had by using psyco missiles. What it seems like they're better at is close-in battles, actually. Haman was able to maneuver her mines around us to strike at nearby targets accurately. So psyco missiles could be an effective weapon not for BVR engagements, but intense melees.

Audrey grins. "Thought you'd appreciate it, Romeo." You decide to ignore her jab, for now.

"And what does it mean, 'moderate damage'? I thought the damage to the Lilium was mostly superficial?"

Emary floats by behind your back, probably on her way from one work station to another. "It means the damage is widespread, and too bad to simply buff out. So we're going to have to replace a lot of parts all over the machine, as opposed to the Viola. That's just putting an arm back on as a single unit. It's a tad simpler."

>Push for an upgrade while they're at it (what)?

>>
>>33657503
I suppose you're right. What would be nice, in my opinion, would be if Zimmad's proposed combat doctrine based on mixed teams of Gyans and Doms was adopted. Take the Gyan Krieger and the Dom Funf so they're more versatile than their predecessors, outfit them with modern advancements like magnetic coating or Gundarium Gamma, and you'd have a nice fighting force. The Gyans do close range combat, the Doms do long range bombardment, they both can handle mid range.
>>

I'll say this much: Haman and Audrey have a few ideas of how to put them into use.

Hmm, what would be quicker, fixing up the Lilium, or getting the Efreet combat ready? I'd rather have a full squad ready first, so we should prioritize whichever will be quickest. Although I can't remember if the Efreet was a land-only mobilesuit. If it is ignore this entirely.

Does she have any ideas for potential upgrades? We're replacing a lot of parts, apparently, so maybe we can get something installed.

Maybe something to do with protecting our fuel lines or coolant?
>>
>>33657688
"When can we attach the mobile armor to one of our suits?"
>>
>>33657922
Oh, then nevermind. The jammer isn't especially useful when you're running around with a giant Mobile Armor blowing shit up left, right and centre.

What about building a Psycommu into the left arm of the Viola? If they need to make a new one anyway, might as well see what we can do.
>>
>>33658004
Psycommu systems are currently the size of entire mobile suits. Give it time, we'll have suits equipped with them soon enough. Remember? Anaheim is making some specifically for our suits. They just don't have them finished yet. We might be able to speed it up if we capture the Tusche Schwartz. I'm honestly expecting we'll fight a Ple piloting the Schwartz at some point during Operation Stardust, so it might actually happen.
>>
Can we get an ETA on when those new mobile suits are supposed to show up?
>>
>>33658004
Actually changed my mind on this, but the jammer would need to go in the Iris. My thoughts are this, if we have Rosseweisse and Haman train against Audrey in the stealth-ed suit, they can improve their situational awareness , and also their newtype ability to sense people.

Anaheim's busy working on replicating the jammer. They want to put them on our suits with a miniaturized version of the sensor the GP00 used to give us incredible radar range through jamming while making us practically invisible. They're also talking about Psycommu units thrown into the mix. When the upgraded torsos are finished we'll have ridiculously powerful mobile suits.

"So while we're at it, what else could we do to the machines to improve their performance?"

Emary loops one arm around Audrey's seat and arrests her momentum. "Not sure what you'd want, but still, I heard something about upgrades. What're you thinking?"

"That Dendrobium armor... can our machines pilot it?"

"No" Emary replies succinctly. "Even if we could get clearance, it'd require a complete rebuild of your power systems before we could give them the interface they'd need. Plus, there's only one to go around."

"Sorry," she adds, almost as an afterthought.

"Well, how about protecting our fuel and coolant lines, or using differently shaped beam weapons?"

"The former we're doing," Audrey tells you. "The latter, I'm working on. It's complicated getting I-Fields to do anything more than a straight line."

"We can give you the technology for a beam jitte if you'd like," Emary offers. "I'll clear it with Lucette, it's a dead simple upgrade."

"Last... the cockpit," you continue. "Can you fit an extra seat?"

"No," Emary tells you, "but if you'd like I could put in a different style of seat that could be used as a trainer or something... but the psycommu isn't fully miniaturized yet. And the second pilot would need to sit in the first pilot's lap this way." The last half of that explanation has Emary blushing a little from the implications: you can tell she's imagining Haman sitting in your lap. She's probably embellishing it too, with her imagined Haman blushing and shifting her weight nervously against you as you guided her hands across the controls in the Lilium's cockpit.

"Would it be comfortable," you press, trying to get the technician's focus back on the tasks ahead.

"... yeah," she replies. "I'd bet it would be."

"Could the new seat be installed and removed when needed?"

"Sure," Emary replies. "I see no reason why not."

"Good. I'd appreciate if you'd have your techs work on the beam jittes and prepare the new seat, but not install it until we have reason to."

Emary nods. "Sounds fine to me. We should have the repairs done in two or three days."

"Good," you reply. "And do you happen to know when the new machines Kowen is sending will arrive?"

"No." She shakes her head. "That's above my pay grade, Commander. You might ask your Captain next time you see her." With nothing else to discuss and a lot of work ahead of her, Ms. Ounce pushes off Audrey's seat and drifts back over to continue the repairs. The programmer Lucette sent you continues tapping away loudly at the laptop's keyboard, as if trying to remind you he was there.

"So," you finally ask Haman and Carya, "what are you ladies up to?"

"We're giving Haman a shakedown on the Lilium series and their capabilities," Carya replies. "I want her to sharpen her piloting skills before we get back into combat."

"It'd be easier if you'd let me go out in the Iris," Haman replies.

"You have no experience on a machine this responsive," Carya tells her. "There's no reason not to take it slow."

It tryies to compensate for Newtype pilots by having absurdly fast response time, and that gap from traditional suits is *massive*. This thing makes a GM Sniper II feel like it's moving through tar."

"You have to walk before you can run, Haman," you chide the red-haired Newtype. "The Lilium is almost out of control, even for us."

Haman shakes her head. "How can I prove myself if I can't even get into the cockpit? Isn't that what it comes down to in the end?"

"We just want you to be safe," Carya offers. "And you being reckless makes keeping you safe damn hard," Catrina adds.

Suddenly, you have an idea.

"If I went out with Haman in the cockpit," you ask Audrey, "would you be able to upload different sets of battle data and control settings to the Iris? Give Haman a taste of how the three of us fight, and maybe even jump Rossweisse in as well?"

Haman seems excited about the idea, and you get the sense that even Carya and Catrina are interested in how this might turn out.

"It's possible," Audrey admits. "That new seat should be ready tomorrow, if that's something you want to do."

To compare the question of sensitivity and battle data to something you may be more familiar with, imagine that all the MS pilots in the setting are all playing Call of Duty together. Most normal pilots have their sensitivity set to 3 (Default). Some veterans, like Monsha or Burning, have theirs set to 5 or so. The GP-01 is set to about a 7, which is where Karen would be comfortable. Audrey would play at around 9. Most Newtypes would play somewhere between 12 and 15. Char plays at a 16.

Dominic and Amuro play at 18. Carya and Catrina balance out at 19. The maximum is 20.

>>33659088

"I'm going to go get this cleared with Karen before we do anything else. I guess I'll let you know what she says."

Everyone quickly agrees. Haman is still eager to prove herself, but you can sense that there's a little bit of apprehension as well. It seems she really has examined the thrust to weight ratio of your Gundams, and realized herself what a step up it is from anything she'd have been familiar with on Axis. On top of the sheer performance gap, this was one time she won't be able to fly it with her mind alone... and she knows it.

The trip down the hallway to find Karen and Rossweisse is uneventful, aside from nearly being bowled over by a technician who apologized profusely for inconveniencing you. You could tell he was terrified at your reputation: it was foremost in his mind and written all over his face. You find your commanding officer and the raven-haired cyber-Newtype sitting comfortably in the office assigned to Karen for the duration of her stay. The Captain is looking over some paperwork with distaste, and Rossweisse is quietly reading a copy of National Geographic.

"Karen?" you ask, knocking at the frame of her door.

"Yeah, Dom, what's going on?"

You stand in front of her desk and salute. "Ma'am, I'd like to request permission to take Haman and Rossweisse out in the Iris for a training exercise, at 09:00 tomorrow morning."

Karen waves her hand dismissively. "You have permission. File a flight plan with Reiko and try not to break anything. And quit saluting me, you cheeky fuck."

"Yeah, Karen, will do," you grin, lowering your hand. "You wanna watch?"

"Maybe," she tells you, finally looking up from her papers. "If I don't sleep in."

Rossweisse seems excited at the prospect of getting to pilot the Iris tomorrow, having turned her attention away from the magazine to listen in on your conversation. She hasn't voiced any sort of enthusiasm for your plan, but with that kind of look on her face she doesn't have to.

SRW usually makes her more action by basically doing what Haman is gonna do for us and become a Co-Pilot using the G-Bits, so it is not like she can't do the other standard stuff.

But it's SRW, so not canon.

Suddenly driven by an unexpected urge, you walk over to Rossweisse, place your hand against her head, and gently tousle her hair. The girl quietly closes her magazine, and you can feel her head pressing into your hand slightly.

“I wish I had time to just hang out here,” you tell her, “but I've got to finish getting things straightened out with Anaheim today. Maybe tomorrow after the test we can spend some time to get to know each other. That sound good?”

Rossweisse merely nods in silence, and Karen leans back in her chair, smiling a little in spite of herself.

“Good. Get some rest tonight and I'm sure you'll do just fine tomorrow.”

As Rossweisse looks up she's absolutely beaming at you, her dark eyes shining as she smiles. That smile is practically infectious... but at the same time, it's a little heart-wrenching as well.

What kind of sick bastard could perform human experiments on a girl like this?

Returning to your own room with mixed feelings that you're sure the rest of your Newtype teammates can sense, you sit in front of your 'private terminal' and key in the code for the La Vie en Rose's long range telecomm operator.

"Yes, Commander O'Hara. What can I do for you?"

"I'd like you to get Torrington on the horn so I can give Miss Purpleton a report on yesterday's... events."

The operator, a brown-haired civilian in a plain blouse, nods to you. "Right away sir. Secure lines only?"

"You got it."

"Very well, sir."

It takes a minute or two for the operator to patch in a clear and secure signal to Torrington base, but eventually you see the image of Nina Purpleton appear in your screen.

"Mister O'Hara," she greets you rather formally. "What a pleasant surprise! I suppose you have a report for me on yesterday's engagement?"

Off-screen, you can hear a male's voice... whoever it is, it sounds like he's complaining, and it's irritating.

"In short? You have one Hell of a security leak, ma'am. Delaz Fleet ships attacked the La Vie en Rose in order to capture the 03. "Have you gotten my Captain's report?" you ask her.

She shakes her head. "No, not yet. it's lost in the official channels."

"Then we might want to lose the audience. I get stage fright whenever something sensitive comes up," you suggest jokingly.

"Oh?" Nina asks skeptically. "I thought you were into that? But yes, you're right. This hangar SHOULD be empty, so give me a second."

You see Nina turn away from the screen.

"Uraki? Get out. Now. We're talking about sensitive matters."

You hear the male voice off screen say something that apparently manages to further aggravate Nina. "It's a secure channel, Kou," she says, rolling her eyes. "The only insecurity here is yours. Now leave."

This 'Kou' person replies again and apparently leaves, because Nina visibly relaxes. "Finally," she sighs. "He's been hanging around all damn day eying either me or my Gundams. Or both."

"Well, there were thirty-six mobile suits and several Musais. My unit responded first and inflicted heavy casualties before Defrah came to sweep the rest of them. Twenty survivors or so off the last Musai. The last surviving pilot is on a suicide watch after trying to slit his wrists with a plastic spork."

"Jesus," Nina mutters. "Thirty-six? Where the hell did they come from?"

"According to a prisoner who cooperated with us, the Delaz fleet got word of Unit 3's completion and came to either capture it or destroy it. We're not sure which."

"And casualties of our own?" Nina finally asks. "How's your team?"

"We're fine, but two of our machines got pounded pretty good," you admit. "I lost the shield boosters entirely and nearly lost the Lilium when the propellant tanks on the boosters ignited."

"Well, I'm glad you're okay," Nina replies. "Shame your suits were damaged, they're wonderfully composed designs. Real masterpieces."

"Yours is bigger, though," you remind her. She nods in agreement.

"You'd better get some extra security out to Torrington, your site may be hit as well."

The date is October 13th, UC 0083. The time is 08:45 GMT: fifteen minutes before your joint sortie with Haman in the Iris.

Your own machine and the Viola are coming along well, though you have to wonder if the Anaheim techs know what they're doing assembling the Viola's new arm that way. It certainly doesn't look the same to you as it did before it got blown off.

More immediate concerns take precedence, though. Haman still seems nervous and tired, while Rossweisse feels as cool and collected as ever.

Audrey approaches you with Carya and Catrina in tow.

"So, how do you want the battle data and control settings to be set up?"

"Okay," you tell her. "This is what we're going to do. We'll start off at low sensitivity, see how that goes. Then we'll increase the difficulty if that goes well enough."

Audrey nods and takes off to input the data. Catrina, meanwhile, looks you dead in the eyes. "Take care of them. You understand?"

You nod back at her. "Don't worry about them so much. This time I'll be there to bail them out if I need to, but at some point they'll have to fend for themselves. That's the point of all this, remember?"

"Yeah... I know. I know."

08:59. The Iris is readied for launch, with Haman sitting nervously between your legs. Her eyes dart across the controls, and inside her suit you can tell she's stretching as her shoulders, neck, and arms move back and forth ever so slightly.

"You're cleared for launch, Haman," you hear Audrey's voice over the comm. "Catapult firing in three... two..."

"... one," you hear Haman mutter as the massive power of the MS launch catapult slams the Iris forward. Haman is pressed hard against your chest, and for a moment you feel uncomfortably like you're caught between a hammer and an anvil. The pressure thankfully abates as Haman approaches the debris field left by your battle against your recent attackers from the Delaz fleet.

"Debris, 32 degrees by 51," you warn her. "50 meters."

"I've got it," she insists, throttling up the Iris' main thrusters. The machine lurches to one side, missing half a Gelgoog. Its new course, however, is sending it towards a large section of a Musai's destroyed battleplate. It's closing quickly, and you can feel Haman's tension mounting.

"Large contact ahead, 75 meters and closing," you warn her again.

"I said, I've GOT it," Haman insists again as the Iris lurches wildly a second time. The young Newtype's anxiety is unbelievable.

>83
This time, you notice something unusual about Haman's performance... or rather at this point, the lack therof.

"That's impossible," you hear Lucette over the comms. "This telemetry just isn't possible."

"Could be faulty sensors," Defrah offers. "Or Newtype magic."

"It's Newtype magic," Catrina explains simply. "She's responding to potential threats before they manifest... even faster than Dom or I do, if I'm right."

You key the mic so that your whole team, Haman included, can hear. "Wouldn't be surprised. All you need to do is cool down, Haman. Sometimes getting the right timing means you have to wait."

You feel Haman's tension abate significantly at your encouragement, and the next maneuver is much better-timed. She's not jumping the gun or overcompensating as much as she did at the start, and you feel like she's more or less getting the hang of it.

"Well done, Haman. You're getting much better, and really fast. I'm honestly impressed."

You can feel Haman's spirits lift as she closes distance with the La Vie en Rose. "Really, Dominic?"

You nod. "Faster than I did at your age... though speaking of speed, you should probably be killing yours a bit by this point."

Realizing that she's been coming in too fast, Haman quietly curses and taps the Iris' thrust in reverse. "Got it, sorry."

"No big deal," you reassure her.

Once aboard the station, you wave Audrey over again while the sisters and Rossweisse congratulate Haman on her performance. Even Defrah claps her on the back, hard enough to send her spinning.

"Audrey, set the Iris for your specs and we'll go again," you tell her. "From there I'll decide whether to ramp it up to my settings."

"You sure that letting her pilot it at your settings is a smart idea?" she asks nervously. "I mean, I've SEEN your data. It's hardly fair."

"No," you reply. "Which is why we're working our way up to it." Audrey nods, and sets to work recalibrating the Iris. The process only takes a few minutes thanks to the ease with which you can swap data between the three more or less identical machines, and Haman quickly scarfs down a bag of eggs and bacon for breakfast before your next flight.

"Okay," you tell her as soon as the Iris is shot off the launch catapult. "This is going to be a fair bit more challenging. Audrey pilots at these settings, and I swear to god she's a damn natural." You can sense that Audrey is both somewhat taken aback at your praise, as well as a little embarrassed.

"I see... I can see..." Haman mutters quietly
>100
"Everything. It's all so clear to me now."

Wait, you were fairly certain she was going to have trouble with that cloud of junk, but she just managed to thread the needle. How did she... you figure you could have done it easily enough, but so far Haman hasn't shown that degree of precision in her maneuvering yet. There's no way she should have been able to pull that off.

She's thrilled by her success, the sudden feeling of confidence it brought her... she wants more. You can feel that she wants to keep sharpening all of her skills, until she's every bit as good as you or Carya or Catrina. Until she's an amazing enough pilot to stand her own against anyone else, and she's a powerful enough Newtype to win your attention. To prove to Char and her Father and Enzo Bernini what she could make of herself. To prove the value of her own existence.

And she's unwittingly using your senses and instincts to do it.

"Something's wrong," you hear Carya and Catrina's voices in unison, but not through the comm system. Far away, you can sense Rossweisse is uneasy with this unexpected turn.

You can see the sisters on either side of you, as if they're actually in the cockpit with you somehow. It makes the whole space feel incredibly cramped.

"This is dangerous," Carya tells you. "An amazing breakthrough, but I'm afraid it's putting you both in danger as well."

Catrina nods. "I'm worried she's not in total control right now."

Looking down at Haman, you can tell immediately that she's so focused on the goals that she's laid out for herself that she hasn't even noticed what's happening to the two of you yet.

"Haman?" you continue. "Hey, Haman? I don't know if you can hear me, but you've got to snap out of it. Focus on my voice, on the here and now. Don't go off chasing rabbits or whatever, I need you here."

Gradually, you feel Haman becoming more aware of herself as her tunnel-vision comes to an end, and what's going on around her becomes clearer.

"What... what was that?" she groans in confusion. "What was I doing?"

Acting quickly, you take control of the Iris and reverse thrust, coming to a complete stop. "You and I went on a bit of a trip," you explain, noticing the sudden absence of the sisters. If you focus a little, you can sense relief from the two of them and from Rossweisse from here.

"I'll take us back to the station. You were doing well, but that little complication has me kind of spooked."

Haman nods weakly, still not fully believing what just took place.

When you return to the La Vie en Rose, Carya and Catrina are ready and waiting to take Haman off your hands. The poor girl looks exhausted, but strangely satisfied as the sisters escort her off to her room to rest. You can sense from how the sisters feel about it that they think she'll be fine once she rests, so your own worries are eased a little.

"Alright, Rossweisse. Let's see how you fare, shall we?" Any tension the quiet Newtype may have felt is eased as your arms settle in next to her. She certainly feels much more relaxed than Haman did, even if she's making a lot of the same initial mistakes.

"Don't overdo the thrust," you warn her. "They may only be twenty thousand kilos each, but put together they can get nasty."

Rossweisse nods and eases off on the main thrusters, and her maneuvering becomes much smoother with practice. There are a few hairy moments when you feel like you might need to take over, but overall it seems the cyber-Newtype is every bit as good as her natural counterparts.

Not like you ever doubted her, but it still reassures you that she's adapting well to her new abilities in spite of how she came into them.

By the time you return to the La Vie en Rose you're grinning ear to ear, and Rossweisse can clearly tell: she feels exactly the same way.

"Audrey, your data this time," you tell the Ensign. "And how is Haman doing?"

"She's fine," Carya tells you as Audrey re-sets the data for the Iris yet again. "She's resting, but it seems there won't be any permanent harm from your minds coming into that kind of proximity."

"How do you know that?" you ask out of curiosity.

"Gut instinct," Catrina explains. "And a LOT of practice with that sort of shit. She'll be fine. She's young and tough."

Once the Iris is prepared to sortie yet again, you and Rossweisse are launched out into space. Though she struggles again at the increase in responsiveness, leading to vastly exaggerated shifts in direction and attitude, your coaching quickly gets Rossweisse into a bit of a groove. She dodges quite happily in between wrecked chunks of mobile suits and darts under sections of half-vaporized hull for nearly a half hour before you need to return to the La Vie en Rose for fuel...
>>
>>33663915
... and are forced to bring your joyride to an end.

"That was great," you tell Rossweisse honestly. "Every bit as good as Haman, discounting that whole part where we through some bizarre Newtype acid trip."

Rossweisse is a little confused at your description of what happened between you and Haman in the cockpit, but somehow you figured "naked Newtype rainbow dream space" wouldn't really have been much better. Right now, it's more important to you that the young cyber-Newtype is elated at her own success, and is happily clinging to your arm as you drift back down to the deck of La Vie en Rose's hangar.

You also get the distinct impression she wants to try out the Iris at your level of sensitivity and performance, though the thought has her a little intimidated.

"Okay, Rossweisse," you tell the girl, suddenly much sterner than you normally are around her. "What I'm considering now is extremely dangerous... I'm considering letting you try piloting on my own settings. It's going to be a whole new level of sensitivity even from before, and I full well anticipate you not being able to handle it for long: if at all. So I plan to take you away from the debris field so you have an open area to do this in."

With every word, Audrey seems more and more skeptical about your plans, and even the sisters are left shaking their head. But Rossweisse, despite her frown, seems determined to push herself as far as she can go: after all, if she never pushes too far, how would she ever know where her limits are?

"Do you want to try this? There's no shame in saying no. Nobody will think any less of you."

Rossweisse shakes her head resolutely.

"Okay," you tell her. "Audrey, upload my battle data to the Iris." The Ensign nods quietly, still no doubt privately wondering if you've gone insane.

"Stay calm," Carya tells Rossweisse before you both climb into the cockpit. "Don't overcompensate, and try and get a feel for the sensitivity by easing into every adjustment."

With a few salutes that you can't help but feel are melodramatic, the Iris loads into the catapult for the last time today, and the powerful electromagnets beneath its feet drive it out into open space...

What would normally have been a quick, precise adjustment becomes a full blown flat spin, and what would have been a quick reversal of that spin sends the Iris careening off-course, flipping end over end as well as spinning. You can feel the titanic g-forces pressing and pulling at you and Rossweisse, and for the first time you can feel her begin to panic.

Not worry, or discomfort: genuine, absolute panic... and worst of all you feel like you can't do anything to talk her down.

You find your hands and feet almost instinctively shooting towards the controls, only to find that Rossweisse is already there. You consider for a moment that she might still be able to recover it, but quickly reject the notion and decide to recover the Iris before things have a chance to get worse somehow. She's breathing way too hard, and she's been shaken by that initial setback. You've seen it play out a hundred times before with a hundred rookie pilots: they never recover from something like this on their own.

After so many years of constant piloting, much of it in combat, your arms and legs are a fair bit stronger than Rossweisse's even though she was essentially tailor-made for this sort of task. Your hands find hers, and you gently guide them to where they need to go. The younger pilot feels your touch, and calms down enough to relax her muscles and let you show her what her hands need to do.

It takes a moment or two longer to halt the Iris' spin and right yourself, but you want to make sure that Rossweisse could get a decent feel for how it was done.

"There," you finally tell her. "You have nothing to be afraid of. It's just a machine, all it takes is some getting used-to. And besides, nothing too bad can happen while I'm on call."

You swear you can hear several voices complaining, mostly to the effect of "not again". However, you ignore them all as you turn your focus back towards Rossweisse as she pants in your lap.

"You want to try again?"

Rossweisse nods. She's still on edge, but she's put her trust in you enough that she's willing to try again.

This time, it's worse. She pushes the throttle too hard, making the same kind of mistake she was making when you first started out. It's not that she's lost her touch, but you figure she's still just rattled from the experience just moments before.

>90
Maybe letting her go it alone is a mistake.

"Here," you tell her calmly as the Iris hurtles through space yet again, wildly out of control. The g-forces are just shy of bone-cracking as you guide Rossweisse's hands once more and save the Gundam a second time in as many minutes.

Rossweisse seems grateful for the intervention, and her breathing and heart rate begin to stabilize as you walk her through a few high-g maneuvers. Your hands never leave hers as you twist and turn your way back through the debris field, aiming Audrey's 'blade rifle' at shadow targets and swinging it in simulated strikes against wrecked Zakus and Gelgoogs as you pass. All the while, Rossweisse sits in amazement at the way the Iris seems almost eager to follow your every command.

Finally, you set back down aboard the La Vie en Rose.

"I thought that was a mistake," Audrey tells you as she comes in to check on her suit and its occupants. "You and the sisters are just too freakishly fast. No offense."

"None taken," Catrina shakes her head. "And I'm not sure I'd call it a total waste," she adds, noticing how Rossweisse seems to be leaning into you.

Audrey rolls her eyes, and the sisters take a moment to dissuade a couple of technicians she catches staring at the two of you. But honestly, you hardly care about your image anymore. You're pretty sure Emary is already writing a novel about you and your team, and that rumors about you have spread all over the station. But that matters little compared to how much you care for your team... every last one of them.

"You like ice cream?" you ask Rossweisse.

"I don't know," she admits quietly.

"Well, let's find out, shall we? I say it's as good a time as any to treat ourselves."

The sisters float behind you through the hallway as you take Rossweisse to scrounge up some ice cream, making sure nobody bothers either one of you... for now, at least.

And it will be hilarious when he does. I said this earlier, but Dominic is going to mess with Monsha's head just by existing. There's this hotshot young pilot, not even 20 yet, and he wants to dismiss him as a rookie like he does Kou. But it turns out the kid served in the One Year War and was highly decorated for his actions. Hell, he's got one of the highest kill counts of any pilot, has even fought Char Aznable to a standstill, and is actually his superior officer by several ranks. And when he's trying to get over that, he'll notice that the rest of the kid's team is made up entirely of attractive women, many of whom have a romantic interest in him. Even Nina seems to find him attractive. It's just not fair, why doesn't old Bernie get some of that treatment? To top it all off, while the GP01 that Monsha so badly wanted to pilot is rendered inoperable, Dominic turns out to have a souped-up custom Gundam that only looks like it's a GM so it can mess with the enemy's head. And then Bernard will will do nothing but weep into his bourbon for the rest of Stardust Memory.

Except Dominic is a famous Newtype ace, so Monsha will more than likely know who he is.

I wouldn't count on Monsha not being so self-centered he wouldn't be aware of other aces. But even if Dominic being a OYW veteran doesn't come as a surprise, it'll still annoy him to have to acknowledge. And the other stuff still applies. "Stupid kid with his psychic powers and awesome mobile suit and harem of women. I could be that cool too, if I had space magic!"

If we do wind up meeting Kamille, we have to mess with like we do Char. I suggest that instead of mocking his name for being girly, we mock it for being French. "Kamille, huh? Isn't that a Frenchman's name?

Not like we could mock him for having girly name since Dominic, Dominique.

I just realised, that we are kind of simmilar to Sirocco in regards to being surrounded by newtype girls with a thing for us... We just lack the resources of the Jupiter Energy Company...

Yeah, we've made that joke before. If Scirocco does show up we're going to wind up with an instant rivalry.
