@QMKingofHearts.

The date is October 18th, UC 0083. Yesterday, a routine patrol nearly turned fatal when a sabotaged hydraulic system on the Core Fighter II caused your left control surface to freeze in the middle of a hard banked turn, eventually forcing you to spike a landing aboard the Albion. As per your orders, Lieutenant Junior Grade Monsha has been placed under arrest and confined to quarters by South Burning when his paint-covered toothbrush was discovered inside the wing of the Core Fighter, near the point of sabotage. However, this is merely a ruse. You and your teammates almost immediately sensed that the brush was likely planted to implicate the widely unpopular Monsha in the sabotage attempt, in case you managed to recover and land the Core Fighter II.

Now that the mole has hopefully been lulled into a false sense of security, your hope is that you can quickly discern their identity for certain, or perhaps even catch them in the middle of another sabotage attempt. Security has been quietly increased around the ship, and you have been making discrete inquiries into the recent activities and behavior of your primary suspect: Nick Orville, an Anaheim employee who remained aboard the Albion when it departed Torrington.
(1/2)
>>
>>33868703
As it happens, your guy's been acting especially cagey of late: there were three independent reports of him sprinting straight to his quarters after your crash, and two that suggest he made his way into the hangar immediately after it was announced you would be relieving Uraki in the Core Fighter. Several more technicians have also reported that his mood seemed more relaxed since Monsha was placed into custody. Haman's view of his mood? She felt the man felt "positively cocky". Sure makes him SEEM guilty as sin... but then again, your very nearly bought the 'evidence' of Monsha's 'guilt' as well. You could just be jumping at shadows.

Once we do ensnare the rat(s) and set the trap, how are we going to keep them from jumping ship? As far as we know Orville is not alone and could have multiple hands working under him. We'll haft to secure the exterior bulkheads near his quarters and the hangars to prevent him from running.

Either way, consult with Nina.
>>
>>33868768
>Inform the Captains of the situation and suggest creating an opportunity for the saboteur to try again

Unfortunately for us, our evidence is only circumstantial, so we can't really do too much. I have a feeling that he's going to become complacent and mess up now he thinks he's safe, so a trap is the way to go.
>>
>>33868916
Uh, the ship is flying over the ocean, where's he going to go?
>>
>>33868966
Status update: three hours after the crash, the Albion reached Mozambique and proceeded North towards Tanzania: a hotbed of Zeke resistance.
>>
>>33868966
He stole one of the core fighters in canon and flew away.
>>
>>33868768
>Meet with Nina, discuss your respective findings
>>
>>33868703
Get South under our wing. He can help us corner the rat when we start rooting him out. Extra muscle doesn't hurt. Plus I bet Monsha would want words with Orville.
>>
>>33868768
>Meet with Nina
>>
>>33868993
Oh OK, but still I assume we're still airborne? He's not going to be able to escape that easily.

>>33869008
Really? That's fucking stupid. I assume he got blown up by AA fire the moment he left. And also since we're running constant patrols, we don't have a spare now since he broke the other one right?
>>
>>33869052
Keep in mind he's been actively working on the GMs and Gundams in the hangar, so he has some inkling of how they function. He could just as easily Gundamjack US if he can't get a fighter.
>>
>>33868916
Assuming we don't dock anywhere so he can slip out then, the other way for him to do so is to grab a vehicle of some sorts (like a core fighter) and flee the scene.

So maybe we can "sabotage" one of the remaining vehicles around, and when he decides to skip town, he falls into the same trap he set up for us?
>>
>>33869081
Why don't we have biometric locks already, Nina?
>>
>>33869149
I'd assume they're locked down tight by the enginseers.

Which is what Orville is. So we're screwed either way if he gets antsy and tries to route.
>>
>>33869149
Because that would prevent angsty psychic teenagers from falling into the cockpit and singlehandedly routing entire wars. Duh.
>>
>>33869081

If he tried to make a quick escape in one of the MSs from our team, he'll die quite quickly due to him probably not having anything close to newtype reflexes, and the suits settings are for us, so he shouldn't have enough time to change them...
>>
>>33869247
We should be careful he doesn't sabotage the machines. It happened before.
>>
>>33868768
Nina is hanging around the hangar, with Uraki hovering around her. You're not sure whether he reminds you more of a circling vulture or a lost puppy, but either way you're pretty sure he's not there to talk shop with the lead designer of his Gundam. Regardless of his intentions, though shop-talk seems to be all he's getting right now.

You clear your throat behind Nina to catch her attention.

"Ah, Dominic," she greets you. "I was about to come try and find you. Have a minute to talk?"

"Sure, and I've got that report you wanted," you tell her cryptically. "Where to?"

"I'm thinking Mora's office," she tells you, pointing at an enclosed office overlooking the Albion's cavernous port hangar.

You nod, and Nina leads you up the stairs to the office. "No, stay here Kou," she tells Ensign Uraki as he tries to follow you.

"Why not?" he asks, clearly offended a bit.

"It's a private matter," Nina explains to him before closing the door to the office in Uraki's face.

"Poor sod," you mutter.

Nina ignores your remark. "So, I looked into Anaheim's records," she begins, "and Orville was definitely working for Zimmad Company before we 'acquired' him. He's also closely associated with some of the now-cancelled GP-04 project's members, who worked with him at Zimmad."

"Seems like he's got plenty of reason to try something like this," you admit. "But why do it when I'm in the cockpit?"

Nina stares at you incredulously. "You're the Devil's Jester," she replies. "You're right up there with Jung and Ray. Of course he'd try to off you."

Well, shit. That makes sense, but it definitely doesn't feel good knowing you've got a target painted on your back like that.

"So," you eventually manage, putting your own nervousness aside, "I've interviewed a few crewmembers, and Orville's behavior has been pretty fishy. Haman even went so far as to call him "cocky" after he heard that Monsha was arrested."

"He went for the bait," Nina muttered. "Damn. I trusted him, too..."
(1/2)
>>
>>33869247
>>33869288
We really should get the roster on who is working on our machines. Specifically Uraki's.
>>
>>33869317

Did we tell Nina about Haman? I thought her cover was Noin....
>>
>>33869317
"So," Nina finishes, "how do we handle this? Try and catch him in the act or something?"

>Arrange with Karen and Synapse to order a false 'patrol' for tomorrow morning, see if you can catch him trying to sabotage your machines
>Arrange with Synapse and Nina to draw Orville away from his quarters, and look through his personal effects while he's out
>Clear it with Synapse and raid his quarters while he's asleep: he either panics, you find something, or you treat his association with Zimmad and the circumstantial evidence as 'probable cause' to have him held
>>
>>33869357
It's the 21st/22nd century people. Install security cameras in your robot carriers hangar and flight deck already.
>>
>>33869380
... fuck me sideways. 'Noin'.

I keep forgetting she's supposed to be incognito.
>>
>>33869431
>Option 4
Confront him directly in the hauls. Wrap an arm around him like an old friend and lead him off to somewhere private. Set the toothbruth down in front of him and give hm the "we know" look even though we can't prove jack. He'll get cocky and start mouthing off his master plan.

And that's when we pull out the tape recorder and give him the Just as Keikaku.jpg.

> Arrange with Karen and Synapse to order a false 'patrol' for tomorrow morning, see if you can catch him trying to sabotage your machines
> Arrange with Synapse and Nina to draw Orville away from his quarters, and look through his personal effects while he's out
We'll have the false patrol in the morning, and have him be assigned as "someone we trust" to oversee our launch. While he's with us, helping us calibrate the machine, somebody else can run a search of his offices.
>>
>>33869431
Our best bet would be to catch him in the act. We rotate stand-by shifts in our Gundams as it is. Wouldn't be hard to have one of us constantly monitoring the hangar bays from our cockpit. Plus we'd have photographic proof of his fuckery.
>>
>>33869431
>Arrange with Karen and Synapse to order a false 'patrol' for tomorrow morning, see if you can catch him trying to sabotage your machines
>Arrange with Synapse and Nina to draw Orville away from his quarters, and look through his personal effects while he's out
Have Orville be requested to be present at the morning tune up before we take our machine on the patrol.
He's cocky, so he might think he can get away with another sabotage attempt. We can search his room while he's in the hangar.

There's also a good chance that he won't risk a second attempt, simply because the most likely suspect (Monsha) is already under arrest and a second sabotage attempt would prove that it wasn't Monsha acting alone.

This

By the way, is interrogating the Zeke sub prisoners on the back burner until this gets resolved?
>>
>>33869705
Maybe we should goad him into trying a second time?

Like acting all cocky in front of him and telling how this time we won't crash?
>>
>>33869823
Or we go up for a second patrol. Another chance to off us. Before we go up have Nina double-check the hydraulics.

Actually, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have her check our fire control software either. Plus Uraki's.

"I'm going to ask Karen and Captain Synapse to schedule a patrol for tomorrow morning," you tell her. "Can you make sure Orville is assigned to run the checks on our Gundams tonight?"

"Sure," Nina replies. "But why?"

"So that Reiko and Noin can raid the shit out of his quarters, and see if they can't dig up some evidence."

Nina nods to you. "Understood. I'll see to the preparations."

As you leave the office, you see Uraki cast a nervous glance in your direction. When he notices that you've noticed him, he immediately tries to look busy.

"So, what you're saying is that we've ended up inheriting Anaheim's mole problem?" Captain Synapse asks you several minutes later. The man seems distinctly angered by the notion of a traitor being aboard his ship, rather than Monsha just being a vindictive twat.

"That's correct," you tell him.

Karen nods in your direction. "I'll pass the orders to Noin and Carya."

"With your permission, Captain," she adds.

Synapse frowns, but eventually gives you a salute. "You better be sure to catch that son of a bitch," he growls.

Moving down to the the ready room, you find Haman sitting in one of the chairs. You can also feel that the sisters have left your quarters and are on their way to join you.

"Hey, Haman," you greet her.

Haman waves at you. "What's going on?"

"We're moving in on Orville," you tell her. "I'll wait until the sisters are here to give you the briefing."

Haman nods, and settles into her chair to wait. In a few moments the sisters arrive and immediately vault over the back of the couch, landing on their back.

"We going to make a move?" Catrina asks eagerly. "Cause I'm dying to nail this rat bastard already."

"Good," you reply. "We're going to need the to of you to raid Orville's quarters while we've got him out looking at our Gundams."

Haman and the sisters both sit up a bit straighter. "Okay," Haman tells you, "what are we looking for?"

"His laptop, hard drives, unauthorized weapons, any paper records," you tell them, "and watch out for any traps he may have set. I don't expect any problems, but it won't hurt to be careful."

"Got it," Carya tells you. "And destruction of property?"

"Knock yourselves out, so long as you don't destroy any evidence."

Catrina licks her lips. "Love it."

"Excellent," you tell your teammates as you turn to leave. "I'll have Mora shoot you a text on my phone when I think it's time."

On your way from the ready room to see South about getting something of an 'insurance policy' for dealing with Orville, you hear the announcement for your team's phony mission. Good, now all Nina needs to do is get Orville into the hangar in about fifteen minutes, and all the pieces will be in place.

"Hey, South?" you ask the veteran pilot as you walk onto the bridge.

"Yeah, Commander?" he replies, tucking a clipboard under his arm to give you a salute. "What is it?"

"I want you and a pair of MPs to set up a sniper nest in the hangar," you tell him. "Make sure that if our guy tries anything stupid we have some thirty-caliber insurance."

Burning throws you a lopsided grin. "Can do, Dominic. I'll get them in position right away."

"Double time, South," you tell him as he turns to hustle down to the security section's armory.

Heading down to the hangar, you pass by Nina on her way to grab Orville, and give her a curt nod. When you arrive in the hangar, you can't see the sniper team, but you can feel the tension in their minds as they wait with Burning at the top of the cavernous space, right near one of the floodlights that illuminates the hangar. Brilliant thinking: they're actually using the light to hide.

Orville arrives in the hangar with Nina.

"Commander!" Orville greets you. "I wasn't aware you'd be joining us."

"I'm a funny sort of a guy," you reply off-handedly. "I take my own machine's maintenance very seriously."

"A consummate professional, aren't you?" he laughs. "I can respect that." Haman was right, this asshole is practically strutting around the hangar like he owns the place, quite secure in his own confidence that he's managed to avoid suspicion.

“Let's start with the actuators in the ankles on each machine, and work out way up?” Nina suggests.

Orville nods. “Sounds fine, Miss Purpleton.” As the two of them get to work, you try to flag down the dusky chief engineer... to no avail.

Shit, Mora's not getting the message that you want to pass your phone off to her... time to improvise.

“Hang on,” you tell Nina and Orville, just got a text. You take out your phone and pretend to take a keen interest in it. “It's a picture from Lieutenant Marseille. Heh, nice.”

“Can I see it?” Orville asks. There's only mild suspicion there: mostly he just wants to seem friendly and interested. Two-faced little prick.

You shake your head. “It's... not exactly something a gentleman should be sharing,” you tell him in response. “If you catch my drift.”

“Ahhh,” he replies. “So it's THAT kind of photo, you lucky little shit.” Good, he bought it. Even Nina rolls her eyes, apaprently not realizing that it was a ruse. “Pigs,” she mutters under her breath.

You quickly enter a text to Haman and the sisters, but keep up the charade. “I'm going to have to remind her not to send me stuff like this when I'm working,” you tell Orville and Nina.
>Time to get to work
“It's just too distracting for a healthy young man.”

“So, what's your favorite mobile suit?” you ask Orville as you join the technicians in inspecting your Gundam's foot.

“I'm a bit partial to the old GM Sniper-II,” Orville admits. “It wasn't an RX-type, but it was a goddamn piece of art from a designer's perspective.”

“Doninic actually piloted one,” Nina offers.

“Oh yeah?” Orville asks. “How'd you like it?”

You shrug and snag a spanner off the tray sitting next to you. “Should have had magnet coatings on the joints,” you tell him. “The response time of the limbs was too slow relative to the maneuverability of the whole body, made it difficult to shoot and move at the machine's full potential.”

"Huh," Orville responds quietly, with some apparently genuine interest despite his hatred towards you. "Well, good thing we corrected that with the GP series."

For several long minutes you chatter quite amiably, and you can sense a thrill of excitement from your smash-and-grab team, who speed down to the hangar deck.

"Hey, I need a favor," you tell Orville, rising to your feet.

"Sure thing," he replies, also standing. You need to get him into a position where Burning's sniper team can cover him.

"One of the pistons in that pneumatic actuator looked shot, could you help me find a replacement?" You walk over to the small cache of replacement parts at one end of the hangar. Orville, not suspecting anything out of the ordinary, accompanies you... until Haman and C.C. walk through the hatch to the hangar floor. Haman is carrying Orville's laptop and a portable drive, along with some papers, and both women have triumphant looks on their faces.

"You kept physical notes?" Haman asks a bewildered and furious Orville. "How quaint."

"Not to mention stupid," Catrina replies.

Orville, after a moment of indecision, goes for something in his pocket... you can sense aggression and desperation in the man's mind.

You, Haman, Carya and Catrina all leap into action at the same time: just a few milliseconds before the actual threat itself arises. The ladies each move to sidestep, knowing that it will be much more difficult to hit moving targets than stationary, and that they're currently silhouetted against the doorway. The sisters eyes burn in a rich amethyst as their minds act in unison to draw their sidearm. The movement is far faster than Orville could ever dream of matching.

By the time his own .25acp clears his pocket, a .357 round has already buried itself in Orville's side. The speed of the draw and her lateral movement must have spoiled Carrina's aim, and her frustration makes it clear to you that she knows her shot went a little wide, but it's still enough to cause Orville to lose his grip on the little pocket pistol. The weapon slowly falls towards the floor, where its momentum causes it to skitter away.

Which is when you come in.

The sniper behind you realizes that his shot is no good, and his finger eases off the trigger. You can tell he's decided to let you play your own game rather than risk hitting a friendly. You'll have to thank him later, you reckon.

First, you decide to slam your foot into the side of Orville's knee, causing his whole left leg to buckle under his body weight as the patellar ligament ruptures from the lateral impact. But you're far from finished. You could keep kicking him for fucking days on end at this rate, but you feel like you'll be forced to settle for a few more good shots.

Next, you pull your leg back in across your midline and deliver an explosive snap-kick with the side of your foot that crushes Orville's nose and sends him reeling backwards. A cloud of pinkish-red blood wafts over your uniform's trouser leg as the back of Orville's head slams hard into the deck with a sickening thud that reverberates across the hangar.

He's out cold, but he's not quite dead.

>>33872782
All this takes place in the space of about two seconds.

As Carrina moves forward in what you realize to be a center axis relock stance to cover Orville's fallen body, South clambers down from his sniper nest by the floodlights.

"Holy shit," he mutters. "Seems the Young Master's grown up into something pretty scary."

"I'm handing him over to you and Captain Synapse, South," you decide.

"You sure?" he asks you earnestly. "He did try to kill you, and I thought you'd want to come to some kind of understanding..."

"Hell no," you cut South off. "I can understand that he hates my guts, and that I'm not gonna get shit out of him."

Carrina relaxes her stance a little. "Being a Newtype doesn't mean you've got mind control, Lieutenant Burning," she explains. "It's usually a heightened awareness and sensitivity to the world around you, including the people around you."

Haman glares at Orville. "That man won't respond to any of our team. He's too consumed by his hatred of the Gundams and their pilots. Someone else may stand a better chance at getting him to talk."

South sighs. "Fine, but can I at least let Monsha go now?"

You shake your head. "If you must..."

"Nina, I want you and Audrey to work the laptop," you tell her. "And get your mind out of the gutter," you add, to her embarrassment.

"Haman, Carya," you turn to address the rest of your team, "we're going to visit Karen upstairs. And Carya?" you ask the still-fused sisters.

"Dom?"

"Grab a crowbar, we're going by way of Orville's locker space."

"Got it."

As you pass Orville's locker and a group of stunned crewmen, you smash the lock off the front of the locker. "Haman, search the locker and catch us up."

"Right," she replies.

Along the way, Rossweisse joins your group, seemingly interested in the sudden burst of adrenaline triggered by your encounter with Orville. The three of you step onto the bridge of the Albion, and salute Karen and Captain Synapse.

Karen grins manically. "Now that's what I like to hear! Good job team! I assume that pun means you put the smack down on our friend Orville?"

"Beat him like a rented mule, ma'am," Carrina replies. "And I gut-shot him, too."

"Nice touch," Karen tells her. "Interrogations?"

"I'm letting South handle it," you explain. "I don't think he likes me much."

"I can understand why," Captain Synapse replies. "I assume your team also gathered the necessary material to make a case for his guilt?"

"And hopefully to tell us where to go looking for the GP-02," Carrina replies. Rossweisse seems a little excited at the prospect of a battle, but a little nervous as well.

"So it's all a matter of waiting," Karen confirms.

"Helm, maintain present course, but stand by for further instructions," Synapse barks.

The Albion continues on its way. It only takes a few minutes for Haman to meet you on the bridge with a report that there was nothing in Orville's locker but sweaty socks and a normal suit that the man's had no need to use.

Your team's secretaries, on the other hand, have a minor breakthrough to report.

“I'm heading down there right now,” you tell her before motioning to your team. “C'mon, let's let slip the dogs of war.”

Karen nods. “Right. Captain Synapse?”

“Captain Joshua?”

“You may want to have the Burning Team ready for combat patrols, along with Uraki.”

“I'll see to it,” Synapse replies.

Upon reaching the hangar level, you find the whole space churning with technicians seeing to various tasks. Your twin hyper rifles are lifted into their cradle, and fresh grenades are loaded into the Kmpfer's rifle and the arms of the Lilium, Iris, and Viola. Last minute touches are made to the sensitive sensor suites in your machine's head sections as gantries haul drums of 60mm rounds to feed your vulcan pods.

“What do we have on the Mine?” you ask Audrey as you approach.

“Satellite overheads here, sirs,” Reiko reports. Karen stares over her shoulder at the image on her screen.

“The Udzungwa mountain range is in our way to the south,” she reports. “Tough terrain for mobile suits. Slow going.”

“How about airstrips?” Carrina asks.

“Take a look,” Audrey replies. The sisters take a moment to deliberately separate their minds again before turning their attention to the screen.

“Shit,” Catrina mutters. “They could launch Dodais from that dirt strip.”

“That'd make a slow climb up over the mountains a deathtrap,” you muse. “Welcome back, by the way.”

“Thanks,” Carya responds.

“So how about going around?” Haman asks. “It seems like an open plain up here, north of the Selous game reserve.”
(1/2)
>>
>>33874919
“Last choice,” Karen replies. “No cover there at all, it'd leave the Albion wide open to counterattack if we're not careful.”

“It would also let the Liliums abuse their hovering capacity,” Haman observes. “High risk, high reward.”

"Not all of us have that," you remind her. "I'd trust Rossweisse to make it through, but the Burning team would be SOL."

Rossweisse points to a visible gap in the mountains: a pass that could be navigable by the Albion if an MS team cleared the way.

“It feels like a trap,” Carya replies, “but that's because it's clearly the best approach from the south.”

Rosweisse nods. "Probable."

“I was thinking that too. I'm not sure I like it," Haman adds.

"Hit it in the right spot with enough strength and any wall will come crashing down," Reiko observes.

"How strong a presence are we expecting?" you ask. "From the size of those sunken hangars by the mining pit itself, I'd say at least twenty MS, plus some number of Dodai?"

"Sounds about right," Catherine replies. "Based on typical wartime team formations and wing grouping schemes. I'd have a tough time believing hard-core fanatics would change their order of battle that much."

All eyes shift towards you.

Hammer-Anvil time

Our team takes the open plains.

Albion + Burning Team goes over the mountains.

Time our assault to begin shortly before Albion/Burning crest the mountains.

They become the hammer to our anvil, and while hitting from an unexpected direction will sow confusion.

If we can get the Federation to launch an airstrike to hit launch sites/ground batteries, even better.

Or even get some aircover to intercept escaping transports.

What's the situation with the base jabbers development? If one team is gonna foot slog, the other could provide air-cover against any Dodais using those.

No. You're going to be in the heart of Zeon turf, and there are no air assets that have the range to get to Kinbareid, strike, and stand a chance of making it back to Federation-held territory.

“We'll go through the pass,” you decide. “It may be a trap, but it beats getting picked apart in the mountains or getting outnumbered and outflanked on an open plain.”

Karen nods to you. “I hate to say it, but I think you're right. I'll speak with Burning and Synapse. Reiko, you're with me. Dump that intel to a portable drive and bring it with.”

Reiko salutes Karen, and in a matter of moments they're off for the bridge.

“We should arrive at the pass on the 22nd,” you tell your team, “late in the evening. We can attack just before dawn on the 23rd.”

“Roger that,” Carya replies. “But one thing... what is the GP-02 pilot planning to do from there? It's just a big hole in the ground...”

Audrey sighs as she pieces something together. “It's the side of the mine itself,” she says. “Perfect pitch for a launch ramp.”

“You mean the resistance there might have an HLV?” Haman asks.

“It's possible,” Catrina admits. “The remnants are probably planning an attack on a target in space. It's the only thing that fits.”

Nina, however, shudders as she uncovers something on Orville's computer. "No..." she mutters to herself. "The Slattern data?"

“Knifehead doesn't get enough love,” you insist. “But seriously, why is it so bad for the data to get leaked, as opposed to the GP-04?”

“You don't fucking understand!” Nina cries, and you can feel her panic mounting. “The GP-04 would be nothing, NOTHING compared to what might happen if the data on the Slattern gets out!”

“Why don't you just show us?” Haman asks. “That way we can see for ourselves.”

Nina quickly turns Orville's laptop around so that Haman can see it, and you can practically feel the poor Newtype's eyes widening. “This is...”

The rest of your team crowds around the screen.

It's an upgrade package for a Lilium-type machine, and you can immediately see why they picked the name of a monster for it. This thing... it's terrifying in its potential applications. Four thrusters on the backpack, similar to your present machines, but extended outward beyond the machine's center of mass to increase its turning time and allow the thruster nozzles to swivel forward and in reverse at will. There's a second generator that nearly doubles the total power output, along with docks along the thruster arms for a total of eight funnel weapons. Some of the rest of the power runs to the tandem cockpit, while more of it apparently powers a stealth jamming system and a micro-sized version of the Minovsky Particle Interference Wave Searcher system. The optics visor has been replaced by a fixed version to work in tandem with the new sensor suite, and the thruster power has been increased as well, offset by large external tanks. There's also a list of hypothetical applications for the extra power from the secondary power plant, including a small-scale I-Field generator and something called a “beam shield”, as well as much more powerful particle weaponry that could be added to the base suit's armaments.
(1/2)
>>
>>33876395
Nina sighs as you struggle to comprehend the implications this sort of weapon could have for the future, and shudder to think what would happen if Zeon built it first.

“It's the single most overpowered machine we could design,” Nina explains. “The zenith of every individual trend in current mobile suit design paradigms. It's mechanized death so powerful and complext to operate it needs TWO newtypes to bring out its full potential.”

This is simultaneously worrisome and cringe inducing though.
Worrisome in that, if it is fully realized, there'd be a mad scramble for any current and potential Newtypes on both sides from here on out.

I doubt it. The GP02 is a purpose-built machine, using it for anything other than heavy artillery bombardment is a failing prospect. They might apply it to a different mobile suit, though. "Might have done, yes."

"Are you people insane?"

"Might be, yes," Nina admits.

You sigh. "Okay, can the Zekes build it even if they had the materiel?"

"Probably not," she tells you.

"And do they really have enough Newtypes left who can handle either side of the system?" Carya asks. "The remote weapons and the suit?"

"Maybe, probably not."

"Okay, so all you need to do is design a few countermeasures and keep the lid on these ones," you tell her. "Have them ready in case Orville really did leak the intelligence."

Nina sighs, somewhat put at rest. "Okay, you're right. I mean, even with all our resources we can't put these into the field just yet, and it's a lot of money for one machine. I'll get to work finding something to use against a Slattern-modded suit."

"Just don't go and add that countermeasure to the Slattern itself? Please?" Audrey moans. "Try and fight the urge."

The date is October 22nd, UC 0083. The Albion is nearing Kinbareid mine, and the crew is rapidly preparing for the coming assault.

"So he still hasn't said anything?" you ask South as the two of you walk to the hangars.

"Nope," your friend admits. "No new intelligence. I hate to say it, but someone in Intelligence services would probably have to torture him to get him to even say his shoe size."

"So, who leads this op?" you ask as you reach the point to split ways for the port and starboard hangars.

"I was thinking you could send our team up on point," South tells you. "I've okayed it with Karen, told her I'd like to have your machines behind us as a fast response unit. Move you up quickly as a surprise."

"We'll do it your way, South," you tell him before turning to your own hangar.

Before you mount up into your mobile suit, Haman approaches you.

"Dom, don't you dare get yourself killed," she tells you sternly before kissing you on the cheek. "And don't let any of our team die either. And remember I'm watching your back from here."

“Alright,” you radio your team as you drop down to the sandy, scrubby turf below the Albion, “let's do this clean. Don't bunch up, but keep each other covered. No mistakes, nobody gets hurt. I'll take point for our team, I want Rossweisse on my left and the sisters on my right. See if you can't bunch up our enemies and I'll blast them with my rifles. I want you and your rifle in the center and slightly behind, Audrey. Pick targets of opportunity.”

"Haman?" you add. "I'll leave all our backs to you. So sit tight, and I'll spot your fire." Although it's much more difficult to aim remote weapons under gravity, you get the feeling those mines at Haman's mental 'hands' will be invaluable.

You see several green lights on your comm system wink in acknowledgment: it seems your team is taking this especially seriously. You've never seen them all use that method rather than verbal responses.

Ahead of you, you can see that the Burning team has taken a wider formation: Bate is on point with Monsha and South on his flanks and Keith and Adel in the way-back with their GM-Cannon IIs. Uraki and his Gundam are in the center of the formation, likely as their own dedicated fast responder.

Cautiously, your two teams push onward into the wide gap in the mountains...

Newtypes are amazingly aware of their surroundings. They can track motion, the can tell what others are thinking or when they're aggressive. But danger in general? It can be hit or miss depending on the nature of the threat. If you can see it, you can dodge it.

Alpha A. Bate was not a Newtype, and landmines feel neither aggression nor remorse. They're not something even a Newtype could pick out as a threat right off the bat. And this was no ordinary landmine, but a Tactical Atomic Demolition Munition with a one kiloton yield, buried one-hundred feet below the surface of the earth and linked to a series of carefully disguised pressure sensors. Confiscated by retreating Zeon forces from the defunct strip mine at Iringa, which was shut down due to environmental contamination, the deployment of these weapons would be considered a violation of the Antarctic Treaty in time of war. But now, the Zeon remnants are desperate. For them, it's do or die.

Alpha A. Bate never stood a chance.

The blast takes your team by surprise as it envelops the lead GM Custom. The overpressure wave tosses aside South and Monsha's suits like ragdolls, though the damage seems superficial. Uraki's unit manages to stay on its feet, and the two GM Cannon IIs are knocked to the ground without any serious damage. Your own machines scatter and disperse backwards as the cloud of dust spreads from the center of the blast.

"The hell was that!?" Carya shouts into her mic. "Did the bastards just nuke us?" You can feel the alarm from your other teammates, even as Audrey responds.

"Our suits are airtight, there's no risk of contamination by particulate fallout. But I doubt that was the only warhead they've got!"

It is kind of bullshit, yes. But you have to realize that the PC is the only one who gets best of three in systems like this. Each other character? Only gets one shot. Picking the third post only was Bate's one shot.

Newtypes, however, may get some leniency as they 'develop': this goes for allies and enemies.

And manage to trigger one additional charge, spreading a large cloud of radiation-laden dust across your path.

"You got it?" Audrey calls. "What do you mean it's not enough?"

"Commander," she hails you, "the Albion can't extrapolate any other locations based on two data points."

"Dodai! Coming from the one o'clock!" Carya shouts as smaller explosions dot the area around you. Behind your teams, the Albion's own guns open up on the aircraft, and the mobile suits around you fire their vulcans into the air as they pass.

"I can do it," Haman radios to you.

"What?" you ask, "Repeat?"

"I can do this. It'll take almost all of the remaining psycho-mines, but I can maneuver them to test possible dispersion patterns and counter the rest of the mines."

Karen radios you as well. "Then we can move you up through the clouds as cover and counterattack. The Albion can stay back as fire support."

"Alright, hang on to your teeth everyone! This is going to be loud!" Haman radios all of your friendly mobile suits.

Three more psycho-mines disperse and detonate just ABOVE the ground, setting off a 1-kiloton nuclear blast in the process.

"Good start," she mutters, glad to have hit something that time, "but 'good' isn't good enough."

After sending several waves of psycho-mines, and detonating a total of six warheads, Haman sighs. "It took me a while, but I calculated the average distance it took to set one of those damn things off and canvassed the path ahead. It's clear, and I have six warheads left," she reports.

"Well done," you tell her, "now sit back for a while and let us take the lead."

Your remaining suits push forward through the dust to the end of the pass, and you motion to your own team to spread out and keep alert as the hills fall away to your sides and an open plain rolls out in front of you, broken a few kilometers away by some rock outcroppings and low buildings.

You unleash the power of your twin-barreled rifle on the unsuspecting trio of Doms who strayed a little too close together... and nail two of them. Their pilots don't even have enough time to scream before being vaporized, and the third loses its left arm even if it manages to slide off to one side.

They can hover, but their weapons are pretty outdated. A grenade hits Uraki's shield again, putting a serious dent in it, and one rifle shot nails South's machine on the arm to no visible effect.

Your own allies, however, hammer away at the rapidly approaching Doms. Audrey puts a 180mm round straight through the head of one machine, sending it spiraling out of control across the sand. Catrina also hits her target with a burst of beam fire, severely shredding its armored torso and killing the pilot. Chap takes a knee to shoot, but misses, as does Monsha. His target sideslips away from his 90mm rifle fire and turns rapidly, raising a dust cloud to cover his teammates' approach.

Too bad Rossweisse has other plans. A grenade hits each suit while it's still in the dust cloud, which obscures their sensors and makes any reaction impossible. Rossweisse doesn't have that problem, and two burned-out wrecks tumble out of the dust cloud.

South walks a burst of 90mm fire into a Dom's legs, dropping it to the ground in a heap, and Uraki's beam rifle pierces the cockpit of his target... damn, why couldn't he do that against you?

Ensign Keith stands there like a pissant, momentarily stunned by both the loss of Bate earlier and intimidated by the oncoming tide of Doms, which are almost upon you.

I think so. It's the third roll for melee, so it should be in the range given that melee is the winning choice. I like that we're finally getting some melee in, too. Last time Dom did any was back during testing the Liliums. And then it was horrible due to faulty electronics. Now...now we redeem ourselves by reminding the Doms their place in the world. The explosives cook off all at once, destroying the suit, and the errant heat saber embeds itself into a third Dom for good measure.

"ONLY. ONE." you repeat over the comm.

Apparently taking your desires to heart, Audrey not only blasts another Dom to pieces with her accurized artillery piece, but slices a second one in two with its built-in heat saber. "Solid copy, Dominic."

Catrina ignites her own beam saber and slices off the arm of an advancing Dom before it nearly bowls her over... those bastards aren't going for you, they want to hit the Albion! They must be counting on mobile suit beam weapons suffering from atmospheric attenuation at this range!

Rossweisse and the sisters seem to notice it as well. Rossweisse racks her grenade rifle and puts a round into yet another Dom at close range, dropping it at her feet, but his wingman screams past her in a cloud of dust.

Chap drops a Dom with his suit's cannons, and Keith makes an effort but misses due to his inexperience. South hits another Dom, but takes some fire in exchange. Nothing life-threatening, but that'll require some repairs.

Uraki misses with his second shot, and his Dom slips by along with another. Monsha nails his own target, and disables it.

Four Doms are assaulting the Albion, and in the distance you see an HLV lifting off... DAMN. You're out of time.

So I'm wondering what the success of the psycho-mines in Earth-based combat will imply for the future of remote weapons. Maybe we'll get funnels that work effectively under gravity? In which case the Slattern (we really need a new name for it before it gets deployed, though) would be even more terrifying.

Sunflower could actually work, though we should use it's scientific name of "Helianthus" to fit with the GDP's naming scheme. Seems appropriate for a more serious name for something referred to in production as the Slut.

"ALBION!" you roar over the mic. "DROP THAT HLV, NOW! HAMAN, FIRE EVERYTHING!"

Karen shouts something back at you, and it sounds reassuring, but you're too focused on giving the Albion the time it needs. You only vaguely note that Haman has let loose her missiles. Your target leaps, and you see the Albion is in your line of fire... you curse, but you can't risk that shot. Not with a weapon this powerful. So you fire your vulcan pod and 110mm cannons into the air, hoping to connect with something.

Your team is every bit as effective as ever. Audrey holds her fire, in the same boat as you now, but Catrina unleashes an absolutely hellish barrage at the Zaku-laden Dodai that comes screaming from the heavens towards the Albion. Thanks to her, all that comes of it is that the carrier is pelted by a thousand tiny bits of wreckage... and one of the Doms is hit by a falling Zaku.

"Sieg that, motherfuckers," she curses before turning to watch the HLV.

Rossweisse and Uraki nail two more Doms: Uraki with his beam rifle in a really poorly considered shot that just happened to turn out well. Rossweisse, on the other hand, draws her suit's beam saber and wings it at her target, embedding it in the Dom's back before it gutters out.

"No," she says quietly... so quietly it feels almost more like your Newtype senses were hearing it rather than your actual ears.

Finally, it happens to be South that scores the last kill from the ground, leaving the Albion clear to engage...

The beams from its cannons lance towards the HLV, but hit mostly air. The psycho mines struggle to keep up... but simply can't. They're too far behind, and too slow to keep up with a rocket that's nearing the 25,000 miles per hour needed to break atmosphere. You can hear Haman's scream of frustration in your mind as the mines burn their limited fuel supplies in vain to try and catch the HLV, only to have their motors fail and send them falling back to Earth.

"Dom, you getting this?" Audrey asks you. "The Zeon base is hailing us, offering terms of their surrender."

"Forget that," you reply. "Let Karen and Synapse deal with it. I need to get a call patched through to the La Vie en Rose."

"Why?" Carya asks as your team regroups.

"Miss Kar owes me a favor. I intend to collect."

Thread has been archived.

Hope you all understand that the failure here was not pre-written: the shot from the Albion was a difficult one, made on a target moving at a high velocity at several kilometers range. And that was from a slow-moving platform with turrets that still have fairly slow traverse rates, which leaves you a damn small window to hit the target.

Basically, it needed a 70 or higher to even damage the HLV, and I felt that was even a bit lenient.

As for the mines, they're essentially missiles. Missiles are quite slow compared to a lift vehicle.
>>
These fuckheads just violated the Antarctic treating and they want to fucking surrender?
I say we hand them over to Yazan Gable for a little bit of fun.
>>
>>33880647
That sounds about right, without the -15. Honestly, they should have more than a 1 in 20 chance of damaging it.
>>
>>33880647
I'm assuming it would have been an easier shot if we weren't bogged down dealing with the nuke mines and had gotten to the launch site earlier, though. Maybe we should have gone over the mountains, instead. Oh well. Nothing to it now. Let's just hope Defrah can get to it in time.
>>
>>33880647
I think it worth noting how dangerous an orbit attempt is, any damage can cause catastrophic consequences (atmospheric friction works coming up as well after all). And I think we hit it a bit. That MS is probably damaged.
>>
>>33880701
Its velocity alone warranted the 70. The -15 was a range adjustment, as well as a blanket penalty to fixed emplacements that's been in play since Axis in some form or another. I had to modify the bonuses and penalties when I switched to d100.

Hope that's a fair explanation.
>>
>>33880765
Not really, think its far too harsh. Don't forget, the range makes it much easier for the slowly traversing cannons to keep up, to the point of it being a nonissue. A nice predictable path like that should be childs play really.
>>
Rolled 12

>>33880765
Can we get an omake at the start of the next thread?

And a vehicle that's heading for escape velocity is traveling UP. Makes for a nice target for plasma weapons. If we were using ballistic weapons I'd give it to you with the parabolic arc, gravity, wind direction, thermal temperature, etc. Plasma has no limiting range except for the planet's horizon and power supply. The ship could've kept firing actually so long as the vertical tracking didn't exceed the turrets limit.
>>
>>33880883
Beam cannons in Gundam have much shorter ranges than you'd expect. A beam "sniper rifle", for example, can engage out to a few kilometers through atmospheric interference. The main cannons on a Pegasus-class ship have longer range, but they also have considerable cool down. We had our shot, we didn't make it. Don't worry too much about it, we can still salvage this.
>>
>>33880933
To be honest, if we missed our chance because of a bunch of reasons that are wrong, we should be able to point that out and have the QM take that into account.
>>
>>33880933
Also the roll wasn't that good to begin with, I think it was a 46
>>
>>33880983
It was an 80 anon.
>>
Rolled 86

>>33880933
Cooldowns really a non-issue when in atmosphere. Can dump waste heat without worry of cooking the crew.

And that limiting range is due to the power supply. Bigger capacitor and generator means farther ranges.
>>
>>33880991
Can't forget the -15 modifier though >>33880165

That's just how the dice fell, and I think we all should just leave it at that.
>>
>>33881040
Not really. The -15 was for things that were flat out wrong. And I'm not going to shy away from saying that.
>>
>>33880765
It's fine by me. Some things are more difficult than others. It's really too bad about alphabet though. The escape vehicle getting away just gives us more things to shoot in the near future.
>>
>>33880995
No, it's a fundamental aspect of how UC beam weapons work. They're not particle beam weapons so much as they are very long ranged directional mines. Minovsky particles get compressed in a chamber until they undergo fusion upon which the resulting explosion is directed out down the barrel. E-Caps contain pre-compressed Minovsky particles to let mobile suit beam guns fire faster (and with much lower energy input), but trying to do the same on ship-scale weaponry would be too volatile. They have a mandatory time to cool down the chamber and compress the particles again before they can fire a second time. Likewise, since they're not really particle beams so much as focused explosions, they have very high bloom. They can't reach from low atmosphere to high, at least not yet. Give it a few years and we'll have better options, though.
>>
>>33880765
I just want to say that I think its ridiculous for reasons that others have said.
>>
>>33881040
It's a nuke. You would do everything in your power to prevent a WMD from escaping. That means overloading your ships' cannons to hit the thing. That means keep firing until the cannons warps from the heat. And even then you keep trying to bring it down.
>>
>>33881055
You're assuming that beams work the same way in Gundam as they do in real life.
>>
>>33881107
No, I'm assuming that orbital mechanics, and basic physics works like real life. That is, to get into orbit you go on a nice predictable path, and that if you are several kilometers out traversing speed is much less of an issue. That is, the speed and range penalties should not stack fully, thus resulting in at least a damaged vehicle.
>>
>>33881107
Incidentally, the point defense weapons on the ship are actual lasers, not the beam weapons used by mobile suits
>>
>>33881088
Alright. I'll give you that. What's the range on a Pegasus-scale mega particle cannon then? If we get that and the rate of fire, we can figure out how many times we could have taken a shot before the HLV left our effective range. The HLV was a "couple kilometers" out. The "edge of space" boundary is about 100 kms.
>>
>>33881187
Short ranged ones, though. They don't have large enough apertures to deal damage at that distance. Not with their power output, anyway. And depending on what sort of laser they're using, it is entirely possible that they can't be overcharged.
>>
>>33881247
Possibly. The range penatly is bullshit though. That kind of shot would actually be substantially harder at short range.
>>
>>33881229
I don't recall an exact range ever being said, but you can make assumptions based on what happens in the show. It looks to be a few dozen kilometers when in atmosphere, longer outside it. I know that beam weapons that can effectively fire from surface to orbit and back again will be developed by the Gryps Conflict, though.

Something to note as well is that the Albion's beam cannons are actually terribly placed. Seriously, they're awful for attacking anything that isn't straight ahead of them. They have good vertical traverse but the horizontal traverse is awful.
>>
>>33881334
I'll rewatch some of 0083 and get the math if I don't forget. And I figured the effective range would be ballparking around 10 to 15 kilometers.
>>
>>33881148
And at what range does traverse rate no longer factor in? And is that distance greater or less than the effective range limit of the weapon in atmosphere?

I made a call. I set the DC based on movement speed, set a modifier consistent with how I've been handling movement and fixed emplacements. I liked where it came out to, and that it reflected the degree of difficulty of hitting the HLV that both my own reasoning and the canon depiction of the event led me to affix to it.

And the dice did the rest. Honestly, I'd have been thrilled if the roll was an 85 or higher. It would have really mixed things up. But that's not how it happened, because if there's one thing you can count on is that the MC won't always succeed.

I'm not going to retcon the result of a roll that fell short on a task that by all reasonable standards SHOULD have been difficult.
