You are Lord William Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad and the Norther Valley. Some call you the Iron Lord, as your wealth flows from the arms and armor you sell, and your demeanor is as unflinching and cold as castle-forged steel. Other have taken to calling you “The Grey Giant”, in reference to your great size, less-than-warm demeanor, and your recent marriage to House Tollett of Grey Glen.

You are a Lord by right of Murder, having slain the Targaryen children in the Sack of King’s Landing. After years of solitary brooding, you decided to rejoin the greater world. You brought order to your lands, unveiled a traitor, and wedded the lady Alyssa Tollet, who now bears your child.

Which means that you have a legacy to forge for your future child. You will not leave your flesh and blood without care or resources, and so you have dived into the management of your lands and holdings, to procure a bright future for yourself and your children. But storm clouds darken the horizon. Tywin Lannister has asked that you seek to supplant Jon Arryn, your liege lord, as Hand of The King. Further, Oberyn Martell has crossed you, and this you will not let go unpunished.

Currently, you dine with Gregor Lynderly, his strange wife Nance, and their children. You are here to discuss a business venture that was proposed to you by Petyr Baelish, and, you recently learned, devised by Petyr and Lord Lynderly’s eldest Son. So far, the Lynderlys have been shockingly informal, but generally cheerful. Excepting their eldest son.

As it stands, dinner is just beginning in the Lynderly's home.

There is a strange pattern to the seating at their table: Normally a Lord would sit at the head. Instead, here Lord Gregor and his wife Lady Nance sit to the side, closest to the door to the kitchens. Their youngest child, the exuberant Nat sits at the head, while their middle son, Stefon sits at the foot of the table. Jon sits across from them, almost directly across from his mother.

There is space at the table for eight comfortably, and 10 cramped.

Where will you sit, my lord?

Which further means my notes about Ned Stark last thread were incorrect: his Daughter Sansa is not 2, but rather has just been born.

In a disturbing twist, this also suggests, given his near-present birthdate, that Joffrey Baratheon was conceived at your Wedding celebration.

This seems the exceeding opinion.

You and your wife take your seats besides the heir of Snakewood, Jon Lynderly. Again, you note the boy's size: he is already large for his age, near 6 feet, and you wonder if he will grow to match you in size. As it is, you see he is less well-toned than you, his frame bulky, weighted by an excess of what some would call "puppy fat". The boy has just returned from the kitchen, where he was aiding his lady mother with the meal, and has deposited a bowl of tubers mashed with cream, butter, and if your nose doesn't lie, quite a bit of garlic on the table.

He looks at you, his eyes a strange green-brown, and then at his father, as his mother finishes laying out the dishes on the table.

Lord Gregor inclines his head to you:

"My Lord William, do you and your wife desire a prayer over the meal?"

You technically follow the Seven, but are by no means a devout man. You almost forgot you needed a priest at your wedding.

"If you wish, Lord Gregor," You say, expressing indifference.

"Then let's not waste the time," he says, taking his seat as his family sits down. "My wife and I prefer the idea that the Seven see us in all things, and it is better to conduct oneself with dignity than to beg forgiveness for falling short."

The following dinner is... well, the only thing you can think of is a post-battle revel from your soldiers. It is not like the formal decorum of a banquet, nor your quiet calm breakfasts alone. The bowls pass around the table, handed from hand to hand, this one bearing the tubers, that one a salad of woodland herbs, here you get a cut of the meat, here the gravy. And through it, Lord Gregor and his wife interrogate their children.
How was practice, Stefon? Fine, he says, though he needs to work on his over-extension. What were you reading today, Jon? A book about Braavos, but it was pretty clear that the author had never really been, he messed up some simple things. Nat chatters about a cat that gave birth in the stables, and how the kittens were different colors.

The table is...alive, in activity. The boys eat like they had marched hard all day, and expect their food to be taken away from them if it's not eaten in a set time. And watching Stefon steal a roll from Jon's plate, maybe it will.
(cont)
>>
>>33872345

You note that, for all the activity, you sit in an island of calm. Whenever you are asked a question, the rest of the conversation stops, and the movement of bowls and platters slows, so that the table can listen to your response.

You are asked about:
Your ride here (Gregor)
Your recent nuptials, and the rumors of a child. (Nance)
If it's true you killed a man by throwing your pick into him from 30 feet away. (Stefon)
Why your servant (Egar) is so big. (Nat)
If you think your growing presence on the weapons market is going to drive quality up to compete with you, or prices down as your rivals seek to undercut you. (Jon)

>Which do you answer, and how?
>>
>>weapons question

I believe that if someone were to compete, then they would have to put out both the quality, and the quantity that I can. If their steel is inferior, it will come out in the end. And have that happen often enough, then their reputation will suffer all the more while mine shines all the brighter.

>If it's true you killed a man by throwing your pick into him from 30 feet away. (Stefon)
"It's true, It was during a mystic rite of the hill tribes, they make you drink a strange concotion that makes you see visions that you're supposed to fight. The man I fought challenged me right after they ende, I think it was partially because I was still under the after effects of the tincture."

>Why your servant (Egar) is so big. (Nat)
"Egar is no mere servant, he is the leader of my personal guard, and we fought together in Robert's rebellion when I was about the age of your brother. I would be hard pressed to find anyone more worthy to have at your side when trouble happens.

Nevertheless one of the reasons for is size is because of a proper diet, another is due to nessecity. One does not become part of an honour guard or fight in a war by being small and frail."

You allow to Lord Gregor that the ride was peaceful enough, his wooded hills a nice change from your mountain home. You do note that you came across a saddle with no horse or rider, and Lord Gregor furrows his brow in concern, and notes that he will have his men search the area.

Nat's curiosity about Egar is met with an admonition to eat his vegetables and drink his milk. Further, you explain that Egar is not your servant, but the head of your personal guarded, a trusted friend. His mother smiles at you thankfully, while the boy himself huffs, whines, and proceeds to eat some wilted spinach he had been picking at.

To Nance, you state that your wedding was in fact wonderful, but any rumors of children are just rumors. For the moment. You deliver the last with a chuckle, as your wife holds your hand. Lady Nance winks, saying she fully understands.

To Stefon's question, you respond in the affirmative, and briefly outline that it had been a man raiding your mine shipments, and that you had had enough of his insolence. This sets him postively thrumming with excitement, and he pesters his elder brother to come spar with him after dinner.

To Jon's question, you address that, all things being equal, anyone who can will go for the best steel they can get. So if your rivals are unwilling to ascend to your level, they will lose customers as their inferior product shows itself as such over time. Especially since if weapons and armor give way, men die.

Are there any questions you'd like to ask of the family before proceeding to business?
>>

>Your ride here

>If it's true you killed a man by throwing your pick into him from 30 feet away. (Stefon)

I rarer not speak of such that ugly bushiness at table but yes its true although I am uncertain it was actually 30 feet.

If you think your growing presence on the weapons market is going to drive quality up to compete with you, or prices down as your rivals seek to undercut you. (Jon)

While the mines themselves give a great outputs its the quality of the steel produce that is my main focus. Its more likely that will seek to under cut the prices.

>>33872966
>>33872991

I'll hold off on the initial proposal of fostering, until we get a clearer consensus.

You ask Jon if his interest is purely academic, or if he would like to travel to Braavos.
The boy considers for a moment. "I'd like to go there." He admits. "The book was more to learn than for that goal, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't accept the chance to go. Travel, as it says in the Book of The Stranger, is the spice of life. Too many fear its burn, ignoring what they can learn."

You respond with some amusement to Stefon's eagerness for combat.

Soon enough, the meal winds down, and the bowls and platters are hauled away by the boys.

Lord Gregor speaks "My lord, I sense you are an impatient man." He frowns "Forgive me, I meant rather, that you are a..."

"Direct" his eldest chimes in as he carries away a plate.

"Direct. Yes. a Direct man. You wish to 'talk shop'. I am willing to do so, but I would also like to watch my sons exert themselves. Have you any opposition to discussing the deal in the open air, or would you prefer in locked studies?"

"Open air is fine, Lord Gregor." You accede.

"Excellent," He responds.

He turns to the kitchen door. "Boys, Lord William will watch you spar, once your done cleaning!"

Stefon's whoop of joy is clear, as is Jon's "So if I never finish cleaning, I never have to spar?"

Gregor laughs."Certainly, son, but I remind you, after the dishes are done and the kitchen cleaned, the next task is removing spiderwebs from the upper hallways."

There's a brief pause. "That's cheating, father, and you know it."

"Lords don't play fair, son." He turns to you with a gleam in his eye. "Of all creatures on earth, he hates spiders. He's stared at a shadowcat without a trace of fear, checked the paws of a dead bear brought to the keep. But if it has eight legs, and is larger than pea, he cannot stand it."

He leads you out into the yard, where, after a few minutes, his boys emerge. Stefon runs to the smithy, grabbing himself a longsword and parrying blade. He dons a chain shirt with a coif.

His brother shuffles over, picks a blade as long as he is tall, and starts slipping into armor much like your brigandine.

As the boys limber themselves up, do you wish to initiate discussion, or wait for Lord Gregor?

Let's watch the fooking fite first.

On the topic of fostering, remember that dispite his rather unsavory reputation, he's still got a hugely disproportionate pull with the higher ups. We're a pretty big-shot warrior, and we've had the King and Tywin at our wedding. Dispite the child-killing, we're still incredibly influential and well connected for our status.

You opt to wait, letting Lord Gregor speak in his own time. Let him see how patient you can be.

It isn't until his two sons begin actual sparring that he speaks, his eyes following them as he talks to you.

"William-if I may call you that- I must reveal something to you I am not proud of."

Stefon leaps to the attack. He is aggressive, his swords almost constantly moving. You note that he seems to favor an arguably underhanded style- he uses his parrying blade for many of the true attacks, using his sword for the feint. It is slightly uncommon, but not too much so.

"I am not a clever man, William. I can learn well, given time. I am industrious, hard-working. But I am poor at politics, too generous in charity, and easily confused by too many numbers. I pray to the Father and the Smith that my dedication is enough."

Jon, on the other hand, has one of the most unusual long-blade styles you've ever seen. Where the Mountain swings like he's cutting wheat, forcing his foes to desperate defense, Jon uses his blade almost like the world's thinnest shield. He blocks, sidesteps, parries. All with a seeming indifference, weathering his brother's attacks.

"I do not know if this deal is wise, Lord Bordain. My son says it is. And he IS clever. Were he not my heir, I would send him to Oldtown in a second, and revel as he became their Headmaster, or whatever the head of the Maesters is called. He says the deal is wise. He made it. It was his plan, that he told to his friend, Petyr, who now claims it as his own. My son does not care, because it has made his friend happy."

By the Seven, Man!

Alright.um...two degrees of success.

You realize something, watching the boys spar: Jon is fighting perfectly. Not particularly well, mind you, his form is weak, his attention minimal, but he never seeks to block a feint, instead moving the minimum necessary to stop the real strike. It's like...It's like he knows which moves are important. And you suspect it's not a matter of knowing Stefon's style, as his brother makes several unusual attacks, and improvised assaults. It's like the boy can...well, you dislike even thinking it. It's like the boy can see the future.

"My son has few friends, WIlliam. He has his brothers, who he is distant from, and his books. There are few other boys his age in the region, and Petyr is the only one of close age to express any interest in him. I worry that, for all his cleverness, my son will let himself be deceived, and used by Petyr, just to have one friend in this whole world."

Lord Gregor has made no notice of his son's preternatural skill, or rather, shows no surprise. As if this is how it has always been. He looks at you from the side of his eyes.

"I suspect you have realized one reason few others like the company of my son, William. It is a strange story, and I will share it, if you like. Though it should wait until after they finish. As I said, my son says it will work. And I trust in his...judgment. I will not seek to rob you, William. All I wish is for my sons to have long, happy lives. And I do not think provoking a man known for the slaughter of children would play into that hope very well."

He seems to have said his piece.

He held cups, polished armor, and was a popular enough man. He had friends. And then his Lord gave unto him a command that at its best was loathsome. And all those fair weather friends departed, and only a few loyal and true friends remained. I do understand your sons plight Lord, however, I am not truly aware of how to solve it. But let me say this, if your son believes it will work, then I will try my best to have it work. It will not fail through any machinization of mine.

"My lord, it may shock you, but I was once a normal, good boy. A loyal squire, who fetched cups, polished armor, and in general sought only to please my lord. And then came the Sack of King's Landing. I killed several men that day, and saw many...MANY more die. By th eend of it, I was soul-sick, tired, and angry. And my Lord gave me a command. And I carried it out. I would not like to provoke the man I was that day either my lord, and luckily, I need not. The past is done, let us focus on the present. If your son says it will work, that works for me."

Lord Gregor nods as you go on.

"And I would like to hear the tale of his...ability."

Another nod, and Gregor calls out to his sons: "Boys, wrap it up!"

Stegon launches into a frenzy, getting closer and closer to hitting his brother. CLoser, Closer...farther. And farther. A two weapon style is draining on the wielder, and it is clear that Stefon has given all he can for this battle. After a minute or so, his brother calmly moves, swings, and taps his brother on the neck.

Stefon slumps, his head drooping, his arms hanging. He glances at you, then shuffles away. It is clear he hoped to score a blow and impress you, and is now heartbroken he failed.

The look his brother throws you makes it clear that to him, this is somehow your fault, and he follows his shuffling brother, murmuring some unheard encouragment, and even seeks to reassure his brother with a hand upon his shoulder, which is shaken off.

After a minute, they stand before you, Stefon's eyes red, his nose wet. Lord Gregor speaks.

"Jon, Lord William would like to talk about your...past. I wanted you here to add your knowledge. Stefon, you did very well today, I think that's the closest you've ever come!"

Stefon doesn't lift his head at his father's words, merely huffs. His brother, you note, has his eyes locked on yours, and nods sharply to his brother

The boy seems mollified, even smiling, and running in to the keep to tell his mother the news.

You turn to the remaining boy, whose eyes have lost some of their fire.
"Jon, I noticed your...skills. I believe we should have a long conversation."

He nods, and seats himself in the dirt before the steps you and his father sat on.

Lord Gregor clears his throat.

"It all began the day the boy was born, William. He was born dying. A ball of mucus clogged his throat, so when he was swatted, no cry came, just a gurgle. Luckily, the maester on hand had training with many births, and swiftly solved the problem: he cut open the boy's throat."

Jon tilts his head back, and shifts his growing beard, to show a silver scar across his throat. The color is slightly reminiscent of something...Arban! Your maester has a similar colored birthmark, and claims to be marked by the Crone.

"The boy had the screaming sickness for a year afterwards. I joked he was making up for the first cry not working out. Later, he had certain...tricks."

The boy spouted something in a tongue you didn't speak. Then two more.

"If we found foreign books, he learned to speak from them. Supposedly he knows High and Low Valyrian, and Qarth. He just reads the book, and in a week, is saying the words."

"We didn't know how he did it, he had to find the answer."

Jon speaks. "I learned I was born under the seventh wanderer, the Stranger's. Supposedly, some of those born under the wanderers are blessed by the god the wanderer the god stands for."
(NOTE: The Seven Wanderers are 7 colored stars that move around the night sky, each said to serve a God.)

"I believe I'm blessed by the Stranger, God of the Unknown, and Death. I have a couple tricks from it, the reading one, and the battle one. As well as the question one!"

He looks so proud of his abilities.

"Go on, ask me something you want to know!"
>>

How do I die.

What shall my first child be?
>>
>>33875978

No you fucking asshole! That's not something you ask to diviners!
>>
>>33875978
>>33875992
His brow furrows a little.
"I can't...do...future, very well. I do the now better. Stuff like "How do I make my mines better?" or "How many people are there?"
He brightens "It's a boy, though! I know that one!"
>>
>>33876074
Will your plan work?
>>
>>33875934
>>33876074

"Who minted the gold bear coins?"

(The ones we found with the hill tribes)
>>
>>33876018

Your pardon sir, but I sure as fuck would. I would also try to find out when, so that I can fully prepare everyone and everything for WHEN I am gone, so that my people are protected, safe, and ready to avenge me.

If however, the question is unworthy, then my other option would be to ask will my family prosper.
>>
>>33876138

Ding! Now that is a good question to ask
>>
>>33876144
You never read up on your greek myths, did you?

Enough to know that I prefer the Viking sagas.
>>

Nope. hell no. Fuck that.

>>
>>33876074
Ask if Baelish can be considered trustworthy?
>>
>>33876144
Fuck you, and fuck that.
>>
>>33876144

Don't you know what a self-fulling prophecy is?Additionally in some traditions to predict the future is to set the present on that road. Sometimes its as taboo as doing the prediction of your own future because it invokes disaster or tragedy.
>>
>>33876118
>>33876138
>>33876188

You see that the number of questions you're asking is starting to hurt him.

"The plan...should work. But Gulltown has the answer."

"Gold Bear Coins...Petyr. Why, what are they?"

"The rider...cut it off. He's in the Eyrie now."

>>33876241
At this question, he snaps out of his almost trance state (As he answered your questions, he was staring at the ground, tracing paths with his finger, and answering when his finger stopped moving)
"What?! Of course Petyr's trustworthy! He's my friend!"
>>
>>33876138

This!
>>
>>33876335
>"Gold Bear Coins...Petyr. Why, what are they?"

Okay, go with the plan to seem like we don't know, but investigate the shit out of him.
>>
>>33876270

And a hearty suck a bag of dicks to you too sir.

And regardless, it's already been answered.
>>
>>33876335

I believe him.
>>
>>33876335

No more questions. Let's leave him be if the questions are starting to hurt.

Hopefully he understands the reason we asked about Baelish. And can come to ask it himself.
>>
>>33876335
hey guys, hate to be a bitch, but I need to run to the store again.
I think I exposed a nerve in one of my teeth on friday, so I've been dealing with all weekend, and my dinner set it off, so I'm going to cave and buy some orajel. This pain is just too distracting.

Be back in like, 10.

In the meantime, plan your next move, figure out what you want to spend your XP on, whatever.
>>
>>33876508

What can we spend our XP on?

Then I say we give some ability a buff.
>>
>>33876653
you know our current fighting level?
>>
>>33876653
>70 points

I want to say fighting, and maybe leadership. William is pretty young so he doesn't lack for destiny points.
>>
>>33876708

Maybe diplomacy? Just a suggestion.
>>
>>33876653
Kinda need our sheet to know what we can spend on
>>
>>33876569
my idea improve our martial skills some more and see about getting some unique things
>>
>>33876700
We aren't quite Jamie tier so I think we are like 5 with a lot of bonus dice in warpicks.
>>
>>33876741
Bordain isn't really a man for honeyed words and such. more "take the knee before i make you"
>>
>>33876741
Diplomacy works but last I checked Williams wartime command skills actually aren't particularly high.
>>
>>33876780
Right... so do we have anyone we can train under, or do we take longer. That is, If we focus on fighting, that is. Which we should, considering our goal is to kill a bunch of people.
>>
>>33876653

Buy a destiny point and investing into the respected quality.
>>
>>33876787

I mean diplomacy as in "I'm serious and genuine about what I'm saying."
>>
>>33876814
About the only person who could train us up is Jamie and even then he isn't that much better. If we pull off another fighting upgrade after that we will be like one of the best fighters in the world.

I can't remember what the Cap is though.

I honestly wouldn't suggest destiny points at this point. Mainly because qualities are pretty worthless for that point cost.

Holy shit yeah if William goes up even a single rank here he is going to be in the top fighters alive.

>Warfare 3 – Strategy 1B
I always get a kick out of how low this really is each time I read it.

>Endurance 3

And this.
>>
>>33876928
I would go with upgrading status and endurance. We got the bump from the wedding, and the joust on the endurance. Both of them are believable and shouldn't take a lot of effort.
>>
>>33876928
Maybe get favored of nobles?
>>
>>33877018

Seconded for any of those.

Son of a bitch, my tooth hurts WORSE now.
Fuck fuck fuck

Guys, I hate to bitch out like this, but I am literally pressing my face against things in the hopes they help me. I'm looking into my insurance and so on, hopefully I can resume on Wednesday or so.
I have no idea how far ahead of time you have to schedule appointments.
>>

That's fine, Page.
>>

See you in two weeks page.

Alcohol. Whiskey or Bourbon straight to the tooth will kill the pain.

And good night Page. See you Wednesday.

>>33877313

Hope you feel better soon, Page! Take it easy.
