@QMKingofHearts.
The date is October 24th, UC 0083. You are Commander Dominic O'Hara, and things are progressing far too slowly for your tastes. Last night Ensign Uraki discovered that the pilot who stole the GP-02, Anavel Gato, was not on the Heavy Lift Vehicle that your team presumed was carrying the stolen Gundam to space. The presence of the pilot on Earth suggested to Captain Joshua that the Gundam itself may still be in Africa, hidden somewhere. Your team has gathered in the Albion's ready room to allocate responsibilities as you scour Kinbareid one more time to ensure you haven't missed anything.

“So, we're looking for dead shafts and side tunnels,” Audrey explains, “or any records stating that the GP-02 left the base. I'll be leading the investigation team with Reiko and Catherine.”

Karen crosses her leg and frowns. “Captain Synapse wants the rest of us on overwatch,” she explains. “Seems he wants the Albion covered against any Zeon counterattack while we're lingering at Kinbareid.”

“Reasonable,” Haman comments, “but that divides our resources, doesn't it?”

“Right,” Karen nods. “We can't be everywhere at once while maintaining peak effectiveness, so it's up to you, Dom. How do you reckon we should do this?”

>Partial deployment: you and the Sisters will deploy, and the rest will hold in reserve until needed
>Heavy deployment: you and the Sisters will deploy with Rossweisse in Unit 3

>You will interrogate Gato, while the Sisters and Rossweisse deploy: Haman can use your machine
>>
>>34161861
>Partial deployment: you and the Sisters will deploy, and the rest will hold in reserve until needed

Think we were fairly certain in the last thread we're not likely to get anything out of Gato, even after Haman broke him.
>>
>>34161861
>Partial deployment: you and the Sisters will deploy, and the rest will hold in reserve until needed
Just a feeling that it'd be easier to re-deploy the rest of the team to another place, if the mine ends up being a dead end lead.
>>
>>34161861
Rossweisse and Carya cover our carrier.

Dom and Audrey get to murderhobo'ing in the ancient tunnels.

Have Haman and Karen begin looking into local boneyards, mining or logging roads that a transport could have snuck out on, and train tracks. This mine was a functioning place (probably still is) extracting ore. Ore must be transported out to be processed and refined. The Phallus might have been carted out by one of those methods. Worth looking into
>>
>>34161861
> Partial deployment: you and the Sisters will deploy, and the rest will hold in reserve until needed
Gato won't talk to Dom, not after the whole slap thing.

Have Haman on the psycomines just in case. Rosse can be on standby.
And someone start interrogating Gato and the captured Zeeks already.
>>
>>34161967
Audrey will not be in a mobile suit, because those have trouble going inside. Which is where computers and physical records tend to be.

>>34161976
There are no psycho mines.
>>
>>34162055
Yeah, we used those all up trying to take down the HLV. Maybe we can get some other weapons wired up to the psycommu, though? Even without funnels to move them around the battlefield, having Newtype-controlled beam turrets would be a pretty effective weapon.
>>
>>34162055
Ah, we're going on foot? Take Karen with us then and put Blitzen on sifting through local records.
>>
>>34161861

>>34162120
Not feasible for several reasons.
>>34162145
Audrey, Reiko, and Catherine are on foot. You and the Sisters will be in mobile suits.
>>
>>34162055
Hm. Can we get our hands on ground penetrating radar out here or no? Just because this is a strip mine doesn't mean the Zekes haven't been busy expanding the place like Best Korea and the Elevens. Hidden shafts or tunnels bro.
>>
>>34162246
That's an interesting thought: Would ground-penetrating radar still work with Minovsky interference? M-particles don't diffuse through solid matter very well, so it might not have any more interference than you normally get from trying to scan through solid rock.
>>
>>34161861

Could the GP-02 be burried in the nuclear minefield?
I had this thought as Bate died there, which could be the open grave reference, and the concentration of radiation likely to be surrounding the area would cause skin to peel off and burn...
The fact that the GP-02 was designed for nuclear combat would impart it a higher degree of radiation shielding than other MSs...
Then again, it could have been moved into one of the craters as it did 'dive' into the open grave...

Just my thoughts on the matter...
>>
>>34162240
>Not feasible for several reasons.
Aw, too bad. I was hoping we could pop beam turrets on the Lilium series like the Altron's scorpion tail and have Haman provide covering fire for all of us while we handled other things. But I guess that wouldn't be something we could just whip up, would it? Something for the Slattern, maybe.

Another thing to look out for would be mining activity. Roadheaders would be used to add additional rooms and space like your typical X-Com base setup.

Look for grooves cut into the rock and shit and run the ground pen radar over the wall or floor. Get a void and bingo. Break out the detchord.
>>
>>34162338
Possible, though the heat might as well indicate the mine itself (since apparently they were using nuclear bombs for strip mining, from what I remember) or the volcano.

Actually, do we have a list of mines in which the bombs were detonated before? Those could be our prime targets/
>>
>>34162410

Good catch!

Maybe one where a bomb when off prematurely and caused some deaths?
>>
>>34162240
“Right,” you reply. “Carya and I will humor Captain Synapse while Audrey's team runs their op. Rosse and Haman will be our reserves: Rosse in the Kämpfer, and Haman can use the Iris with Audrey's flight setup. With her permission, of course.”

Audrey nods to Haman, then to you. “That's fine by me.”

“Then let's get it done,” Karen orders. “Audrey, Reiko, Catherine, your MP escort will meet you in South's team's hangar.”

As your group files out through the door, you hold out a fist for Audrey to bump. “Good luck, Audrey,” you tell her.

She raps her knuckles gently against your own. “You too, Commander.”

It takes only a few minutes to sortie in the Lilium, and seconds behind you the Viola descends gracefully to earth. On the other side of the Albion, which is up against a low hill, you see the jeeps of Audrey's convoy roll down the ramp and into the field, followed shortly thereafter by Monsha in his GM Custom and Adel in his GM Cannon II. The two pilots quickly move to secure the short distance to the makeshift Zeon base near the edge of the mine, while Ensigns Uraki and Keith sortie in their own units. The rookies stick together as they begin a sweep to the Albion's aft.

“Commander,” your radio crackles as Karen contacts you and the Sisters, “why don't you move towards the opposite side of the pit? That should give you solid coverage of the area and a clear line of sight.”

“Acknowledged,” you reply. “So, Carya, you reckon there's anything we can look into while we're stuck out here?”
(1/2)
>>
>>34162503
You can easily tell that the Sisters are every bit as frustrated at being forced to do screening patrols while there's other, more important work to be done. “Rail lines, maybe,” Carya replies. “This was an active mine, so you'd figure they'd need to move their tailings out.”

“Maybe a highway,” Catrina adds. “If they were mining diamonds here, it may have been more efficient to drive them out.”

“There are both in the area,” Karen replies after looking over the map. “The rail line runs east-west and there are a couple of roads: one runs southwest towards Iringa, one runs north towards Kilimanjaro, and the last one runs east around the mountains. There's also a path that leads back into the pass the Zekes nuked.”

>Where do you want to start? What do you want to look for?
>>
>>34162472
Entirely possible.

If we do end up with a list of all the mine shafts, we need to check them for:
>having nuclear bombs used on them
>having had an incident or people dead near them from the blast
>being with an open-pit
>being somewhere in the open and surrounded by forest
So we're looking for an open-pit that was made with a nuclear blast, surrounded by trees, and that had casualties when the bomb went off.
>>
>>34162522
Look for signs that there's been heavy vehicle usage. The GP02 is one heavy fucker, so it'd be likely to damage the roads, because it's also going to be considerably heavier than anything else that has traveled on it, so cracks in tarmac and potholes. I guess start on the road to Kilimanjaro, it's less populated, and would be a better place to hide a base.
>>
>>34162522
How isolated is the mine if I may ask? Is there a civilian town or indigenous village nearby?

Does the rail line or highway go near Kilomanjaro?
>>
>>34162522
>Where do you want to start?
East-West rail line.

> What do you want to look for?
Cavern width and maybe vertical clearance. See if there's an area where it's possible to walk a MS out.
Check if there's any missing big equipment or signs of recent use on any equipment left for hoisting or hauling something.
>>
>>34162623
>and the last one runs east around the mountains
>mountains
>MOUNTAINS

Hello.
>>
>>34162623
There are a few towns along the way towards Kilimanjaro, and the road running out of Kinbareid could link to any number of roads: one of which does lead to the vicinity of the mountain itself.
>>
>>34162578
>>34162615
So it seems like there's some support for having Audrey's team check the records for likely candidates on the computers at Kinbareid, and for checking the conditions of the roads leading away from the mine.

Is this acceptable? I only ask because the longer I wait the less it seems likely that you'll come to any consensus.
>>
>>34162674
We came in from the pass, so anything on the pass 'side' would be a right out. If the highway leading towards Kilimanjaro is on the 'other' side of the strip mine, then we've got ourselves a possible lead. Anything on this side would've been shot and slagged as it tried to run.

If they were on the other side, Zekes' could've used the distraction the nuke mines caused to bug out with our Metal Gear.
>>
>>34162719
Works for me. And you're right, we should get on with this before we get bogged down in minutiae.
>>
>>34162719
Yeah, though such mines usually use their own railways for transport of goods.

Maybe have Audrey's team check the computers for any transports that were performed in the recent few days first.
>>
>>34162719
Yeah, with fairly broad options like this it's always going to be difficult to all agree on one thing. And it's lot like Dom would just sit around and not do anything either.
>>
>>34162719
Yeah, that works. See if there's a nearby boneyard for old and discarded mining equipment.

I was mainly wondering about the towns along the roads as they could be loyal to the Zekes and used to hide the 02.
>>
>>34162737
Remember, Gato was ahead of us. He had time to get out of his machine and 'disappear' it before we arrived, meaning anything other than the southern pass would have worked.

The southwest road sounds like a good option.
>>
>>34162719
>writing
>>
>>34162801
I had the impression we caught them with their pants down. They expected us, but not that soon with our discovery of Orville's fuckery. They didn't have time for Plan A by launching the Phallus into space, so they went with Plan B by burying the Metal Gear and waiting for things to blow over.
>>
>>34162901
If they panicked, then the 02 is somewhere near the airstrip since they were planning on sending it to space. So we should check the mines that are connected to that airstrip.

Roads should also take a precedent over rails - far easier to move something with a truck than having a train prepped. And if the mines were abandoned before, then the trains probably don't go through there anymore.

You try to raise Audrey on the radio, and after a few minutes you succeed.

“April,” you start, mindful that people outside your own team can probably hear you, “do me a favor and check the records at Kinbareid for areas where demolition nukes were used.”

There's a noticeable pause as Audrey checks the computers. “I doubt the Zekes kept those records, but Blitzen's telling me they didn't protect any of the old civilian data stored here. We can have you a rundown in a few minutes. I assume you want to know where the satchel charges came from?”

“That's right,” you tell her. “We'll be checking out the roads away from the mine while you're on that.”

“So, where do we start?” Carya asks. “Not the one straight south, I'd assume.”

“No, let's check the road towards the north. It struck me as being better-traveled.”

The sisters acknowledge your order and the two of you skirt the edge of the pit mine, your hover units kicking up dust behind you as you go. It only takes a minute or two to reach the head of the road north: a wide, dirt path leading away towards Kilimanjaro.

“It looks like it's been used,” Catrina comments. “But by smaller vehicles. No mobile suit traces, nor larger transport vehicles.”

“So it's probably not our best bet,” you conclude.

"Commander," Audrey radios you.

"Go ahead."

"I've found some records here. There were no nuclear demolitions conducted at Kinbareid. Ever."

"So how did they get the tac-nukes?" Carya mutters to herself, giving voice to your question. "Had to be from a mine that did."

"I want you to look for a list of mines in this area that DID use nukes," you reply. "If the Zekes have a second mine under their control in the region, that'd be the best place to send the GP-02."

"Will do, Commander," Audrey replies. "There are also some old news articles on one of these machines that could provide a clue. Or at least Reiko seems to think so."

"Let's check another road while we're waiting, shall we?" Carya suggests.

"Southwest," you reply. "We'll check that way, and if it's no good we'll start heading east."

While en route to the road to Iringa, you receive a radio call from Monsha, whose irritability is readily apparent.

"What are you doing, Commander?" he asks. "Captain Synapse ordered us to run patrols, not play detective. That's for the smart people to do."

"Focus on your own team, Lieutenant," Carya replies wearily.

"If you've got time to bitch about the job we're doing, you're clearly not devoting enough effort to your own job," Catrina adds.

That seems to shut him up for the time being, but you can tell the man is still pissed at you and your team. Well, tough shit. He can deal with it.

"Approaching the road," Carya announces.

You look carefully over the dirt path, and quickly notice a wide treadmark near the right shoulder.

"There," you announce, sending your feed to the Viola. "In that dried mud patch. The last rain was the day before we raided Kinbareid, right?"

"That's right, and any tracks older than that would have likely been washed out," Carya confirms. "Karen, I think we've got a likely trail here. A large, heavy truck moved out on this road in the last fourty-eight hours, give or take."

"I'll tell Captain Synapse," Karen replies.

"Dominic," Audrey calls over the radio. "We've got no evidence of nuclear demolitions in the area, which is bullshit. It seems the civilians working here just didn't want to talk about it. We can either keep working, or move on our likely target down towards Iringa."

As the Burning team returns to the Albion, you see the Kämpfer and Iris sortie. As the two suits touch ground, a video feed pops up on your screen showing Haman and Karen sitting in the Iris' panoramic cockpit.

"Karen?" Carya asks, bewildered. "What's this about?"

"I'm not leaving my team behind," she explains. "The Albion doesn't need me there anyway."

"Fair enough," you admit.

The Albion heads down the road to Iringa, which should take about half an hour at a leisurely speed. Meanwhile, Audrey's team continues working on the data at Kinbareid. They're met with nearly twenty minutes of frustration before electing to simply dump the data to a series of portable drives.

"Alright, time's up," you announce, quickly kneeling near the main building at Kinbareid and popping open your cockpit. The screens lining the inside of your cockpit power down briefly as Reiko and Catherine clamber in alongside you.

"You lot stay here," you shout to the MPs. "No room, no time. Audrey, go with Carya."

Audrey sprints for the kneeling Viola and hops into its hand, and the sisters raise her the rest of the way up into their cockpit.

"Got her," Catrina replies happily... seems like she's a bit happier to have Audrey along for the ride than you'd expected. "Hold on tight."

Your hatch closes again and the screens power back on, showing that your team's four mobile suits are all active and ready to go.

"Move up, fast!" you order. "Keep an eye out for ambushes. Rosse, we'll be skimming, so if you start falling behind let me know."

"Okay," she replies quietly.

The road is rough in some patches, requiring your machines to weave a little to avoid getting tripped up. Otherwise, your progress is rapid, and you soon close the distance with the Albion. You're disheartened, however, as Audrey intercepts a radio broadcast and re-transmits it to your team.

"How the hell did he get past our MPs?" Uraki asks aghast.

"Not sure," Burning replies, "but he's apparently wounded a few of our crew on the way out. Good thing we clipped the core fighter."

"Still," Uraki replies, "we need to get over there before he gets to the Physalis!"

"Working on it," Burning grunts. "Scratch one more Zaku."

Split the team. Rossweisse takes the left flank of the Albion, Audrey takes the right flank. This insures we have adequate coverage on the incredibly juicy target that is the Albion. Carya and Dom break through to engage Gato.
>>
Hmm just thinking, can we leave Rosse with them? Her suit doesn't have the ability to hover and gottagofaster like ours, and I think if we're hurrying then we can't really afford to wait for her if something happens. But if we get separated and she's alone she'll be in trouble.

Yes it does. The Kampfer is all about fast strikes, and can hover as well as a Dom can. It's got paper-thin armor (better now that it's been upgraded with Gundarium, though) and horrible fuel consumption, but if you need to do a sudden strike deep into enemy territory the Kampfer is your go-to suit.
>>
>>34164964
It can run as fast as most hover-capable suits can hover.
>>34164925
She did.

>writing
>>
>>34165120
And we've just booted it a long way from where ever we were. And you mentioned it, horrible fuel consumption. She's presumably low now, and running out in a combat scenario is stupid. She'd be better off staying with Burning and the ship which has delicious fuel inside.
>>
>>34165020

Technically, since he was all MUH IDEALS, and Haman stripped him of that, all he has left is service to Delaz and/or the Nuke...

Might be nice if he destroyed the GP-02 and him along with it, but that is not likely... he is a man with nothing left. What does he have to loose?

"Burning team," you announce, "heads up. We're punching through: can't stop, won't stop!"

Reiko and Catherine both squeal a little as you vault over a confused Zaku pilot, whose machine is one of many sunk into giant foxholes and trenches, leaving him for Haman to mow down with the Iris' blade rifle. It seems Catherine is terrified, but Reiko's screams are more like an excited schoolgirl. She's having the time of her life.

A burst of beam fire from the Viola creates an opening for you to punch through with Haman, though a rocket forces the sisters to fall back and they lose their own momentum. It seems like the suits stationed at Iringa are their older models, and they were probably banking on this site never being discovered.

Carya seeks to even the odds by maneuvering the Viola into one of the trenches before letting Catrina get to the gruesome work of dropping Zaku after Zaku, sometimes using their own heat-hawks against them.

Rosse, however, hangs back, dropping a Zaku that had drawn a line on Uraki's Gundam.

"Go," she tells you. You realize she intends to aid the Burning team so that they can bring their guns to bear in support: good thinking on her part.

Unfortunately, it seems stopping to pick up your team may have given Gato an extra few moments: the GP-02 rises up over the edge of the mining pit, its nuclear launcher aimed not at you, but squarely at the Albion.

Its pilot is trying to raise your teams on an open comm channel.

"Dom," you hear Karen announce, "he's asking for you."

The fire around Iringa mine has ceased entirely: every pilot here is either dead or listening in on this conversation.

Live with a bit of risk.
A Mexican Standoff. Problem is that a Mexican standoff can easily be concluded if you shoot first. He's also pointing a freaking NUKE at us. If we don't first strike he'll have a position of power to negotiate at us.

Nuclear warheads are actually very fragile, not in the explodey sense but in the 'if this screw breaks, it'll become useless' sense.

“... well shit,” you frown, scratching your head. “Don't suppose I should try for a first strike?”

“No.”

“Bad idea.”

“Probably not.”

“Fuck that.”

“Yeah, I'll go with no.”

“No. Hell no. It's multiple choice.”

“Figured as much,” you admit. “Patch me through.”

“So,” Gato greets you. “You decided to listen to me after all.”

“This is Johnny Ridden speaking,” you reply, “how may I help you?”

“Idiot,” Gato sighs. “But no matter. I have here a nuclear warhead with a yield of one point three megatons. If I notice any of your allies' machines moving, or charging their weapons, I will fire it. Are we clear?”

“Crystal,” you reply seriously. “I take it this isn't a social call?”

“Correct.”

“So, what's on your mind?” you ask, leaning back into your seat as the two young women in your cockpit clamber for a better position.
(1/?)
>>
>>34166136
I think he's implying that as a tactical nuke it has no minimum arming distance?
Or that as a nuke, it automatically arms given firing solution data from a targeting computer?
>>
>>34166199
Gato shakes his head at what he sees on your feed. “Are you piloting a Gundam, or a mobile house of ill repute with armor?”

“Yes,” you reply. “I thought you were about to say something important?”

“I'm a dead man, Mister O'Hara,” Gato explains. “I've given my life in support of the Zabis, whose war has wiped out any progress towards the ideals of Zeon I thought we once shared.”

You aim a burst of vilcan fire at the GP-02's head, which Gato allows to strike it with no serious damage. “You really can't help that, can you?”

“No, it's pretty much reflex at this point. But you've still got the nuclear talking-stick, so go on.”

“All I have left now is my duty to the Principality. If I surrender, then all I gave was for nothing. The lives we took, the sacrifice of my comrades would all be invalidated. So I want you to kill me.” That... certainly comes as a surprise.

Gato sets the nuclear bazooka down on the ground, but still aimed like a mortar towards the Albion. “The trigger on the projectile itself was not removed when it was redesigned to be fired from this launcher. It can be operated remotely. If you try anything rash, I can still use it from here.”

"Okay, not quite following," you admit. "Explain."

“I no longer wish to serve the self-defeating Principality, but I cannot in good conscience surrender or allow you to kill me. So my only option is a duel.”

“Will you do this for me, Devil's Jester? Will you send me to the next world with some shred of my honor intact?”

I'm confused as to why shoot was not the default option.

With this we have essentially three options;

A) He surrenders (never going to happen, Muh IDEALS)

Grenade launches generally have mechanisms to prevent close proximity detonation.

>>
>>34166649
I guess it's named character syndrome. If this was some mook, in a nuke equipped Zaku, no one would give a shit if we killed him. But because it's "Gato" it's suddenly important that we recruit him, despite the fact he lost to fucking Kou, and he was just Delaz's idealistic puppet.

And as for the conspiracy guys, wut?

If you think their eye is on us now, what happens after we recruit a Zeek who was plotting to blow up the fleet?

Besides if you're talking about sanity you did notice we're on a Cyber New-type recruiting kick right now, right?
>>
>>34166746
We have an elite team of MS pilots already. Most of whom are newtypes.

Why do we need Gato? More importantly, why should any of our allies trust him even if we did need him?
>>
>>34166623
I mean the GP-02 completely lacks any ranged weaponry outside of the Nuke, relying on a mere pair of beam sabers. It's shield isn't designed for direct combat, but rather, to survive against a nuclear blast. Furthermore, it's shield and heavy armour are pretty much useless against our beam weaponry. I'm pretty sure the Lilum is also faster, due to it's lax of fuckhueg armour, and in a setting where beam weaponry trumps everything, speed beats armour.

>>34166678
Look, trying to recruit someone is a bad idea when they're carring around a fucking nuke. If we duel him, we can get the nuke away from him and fucking destroy it, because we're NOT going to try and recover it and risk having the nuke go off.

Note that if magic beam sabers somehow set off nukes by hitting them, we destroy the launch instead, but leave the nuke itself intact.
>>
>>34166795
Seriously, this is little plot armor mode, we don't have to fear him
>>
>>34166249
“Very well,” you agree. “I have two non-combatants aboard. May I let them disembark?”

“Yes,” Gato agrees. “I wouldn't want you to be too worried about their safety that you lose focus on me.”

“Rosse,” you order, “prepare to take on two passangers. You've got the most space right now.”

Rossweisse obeys and approaches in her Kämpfer. You quickly help the two secretaries down your hatch, where Rossweisse stands ready to help them across the small gap between your suits. As you turn away the young cyber-Newtype takes your hand in hers and grips it tightly. You can tell without her even needing to speak: if it seems like you're in danger, she plans to fire on the nuke and disable it so that the others can waste Gato.

When you get back to your cockpit, you're a little flattered to hear that everyone else in your team, as well as Burning and Uraki, are planning the same thing: Haman tried to call dibs on the killing blow in that event, though the Sisters have contested it.

“Alright,” you radio Gato. “I'm ready. Beam sabers, I presume?”

“That's all I have,” he admits. “Nina didn't add any other weapons.”

“Okay. You're positive this is what your honor demands?”

"I chose this path myself," Gato replies. "Your friend Haman reminded me of that very clearly. What sort of man would I be if I didn't walk that path to its end?"

Throw our shield at him to distract him, shields aren't very useful when you're fighting with beam sabers so it won't really be a loss. Then use that distraction to slip around and hit him from the side to try to disable his left arm. Unlike us, his shield can actually stand up to a beam saber, so we should get it out of the way early.

Your shield has a beam coating. It hasn't been re-applied recently, but it's far from useless.

So, we open with a forward dash.
about 3 sabers from him, we jump over the 02 trailing our saber to scratch the left shoulder connectors, hopefully dropping efficiency of the arm.
This would put us behind him where we can spin around and meet his sabers with ours.
Then jink back and sweep left around him making probing attacks, trying to disable the left arm...

Note 'for its mass', the Lilium was designed to be a state-of-the-art combat unit, and with a lot less mass, it doesn't need nearly as many thrusters to keep up.

I'm not saying it's slow, but that it's *slower*, which is a huge fucking deal when the opponent is a Newtype.

>>34166933
I voted for it because HE HAS A FUCKING NUKE. Seriously, when someone has a fucking WMD, you do whatever it takes to get him away from it. I don't want to take the chance of him using the Nuke if there's any way we could afford it.

There's a limit to trying to talk someone down, and as long as he is anywhere near that nuke, he's too dangerous to everyone to let live.

What's the point when it won't accomplish anything?

Right, this seems as good a point as any.

Karen is a veteran. She's only a middling commanding officer, but she IS a keen observer. She may not be an active pilot, but she still knows how pilots think, and she can put those abilities to good use even if she's just watching a fight.

From this point forward, Karen's tactical observations mean you may choose to reroll a single low roll, once per combat.

Do you want to give this a shot?
Y/N
>>
>>34167236

>>
>>34167301
I can assure you, it isn't bullshit. Newtypes each have certain abilities. Some of those abilities are considered "hidden", and do not become available until a crucial moment.

Karen's was this, and this is one moment of stress I've judged to be sufficient to "unlock" it.
>>
>>34167396

>>
>>34167246

Wouldn't 'Keen Observer' give tactical info to the extent of 'Hit X Weak Point for Massive Damage' levels of information? Maybe a particular hint as to when a special weapon is preparing to fire rather than re-roll once, kind of deal?

Buy the way, Has the battle stopped for everyone to watch, or is it still going on? I'd hate for us to take a stray bullet/bazooka in the middle of the duel...
>>
>>34167449
That was an error. 'Aces' have similar abilities as well, but are generally single use rather than blanket buffs or constant effects.
>>
>>34167419
>>34167460

No, I'm calling it bullshit because the ability to re-roll in case of combat failure when we already have 3D100's is getting close to the point of making rolling a pointless exercise.

>Seemed like "no" was carrying it, so I finished writing it out
Taking the initiative, you skate forwards and launch a grenade towards Gato. Not AT him: that huge shield of his would just tank the blast anyway. No, this grenade is aimed at the ground in front of him, and kicks up a cloud of dust and debris that temporarily blinds him. Then, you use your leg thrusters to jink to the GP-02's left side, aiming to get rid of its massive shield with a slash to the wrist.

You ignite the saber mounted in your machine's right arm and strike. However, Gato seems to guess that you've identified his shield as his greatest advantage in melee combat and prepares to counter.

The result is that while you manage to put your blade through his machine's wrist, as planned, he manages to counter with a strike of his own that your newtype senses are barely able to help you intercept. With its beam coating severely weakened already by weeks of fighting, the shield fails, allowing the strike to damage your machine's left shoulder. The remnants of the slab of metal fall to the earth with a resounding thump as you are forced to eject the now dead-weight. As the dust clears, you shut off your beam saber to save power.

Your opponent is missing his suit's shield and left arm from about the wrist down, and your own suit has now lost its shield and the left arm feels slower: likely that the hydraulics have been damaged, you gather. Another hit there could put you in the same boat Gato's in, but for now you're barely on top. You also register some confusion, as Gato has yet to see any of your sabers actually OUT.

I don't want to use the guns directly on him, feels like it could be cheating. And if he thinks we're cheating he might as well just shoot the nuke.

Hey, speaking of which, are we sure the nuke's there? Can we detect that? I'd assume that they'd give a ship chasing a nuke a neutron scatter camera to detect radioactive materials with. I mean, that clearly didn't happen with the landmines, but those were buried deep enough that the ground could have blocked the emissions.

Gato doesn't know how many weapons you've got. You managed to shut off your wrist blade before the dust settled, and he's never seen the Lilium's back skirt, where two beam sabers are stored. You managed to jink in such a way so as to ensure that.

So you decide to maliciously abuse that fact.

With the Lilium hovering just above the ground, you charge again: this time drawing the sabers off your skirt rack as you charge. You sense a brief moment of confusion as Gato prepares to counter your attack, wondering if you'll lead from the left or the right...
>>
>>34168228
... and manages to sidestep as you lead in with your left blade from above your right shoulder. His own blade lashes out, aimed at your damaged left shoulder, which feels far too heavy to get it out of the way. You're obliged to parry Gato's blade with your right, putting your wrist blade in an awkward position to strike for the kill.

What it DOES put you in prime position for is to slice off the Physalis' other wrist.

"Ha," you laugh over the comms in triumph, "looks like Gato's been... DISARMED."

You can practically feel Catrina beating her head against the console of the Viola.

"Clever little bastard," Gato tells you over his suit's radio. "I knew it from the moment I saw you... you're no ordinary Feddie soldiers. People like you, and Miss Karn, and your other teammates, you're different somehow."

You allow a long pause. "I guess you're right."

"Kill me. Kill me or I'll self-destruct and take you with me."

You can feel one mind, out of all those watching, who feels sadness at the thought of Gato being killed here. You know who it is, but you also get the feeling that Gato isn't a man who bluffs.

"It's sad," you tell him, "how many Zeon soldiers forget that before the Principality, there was a Republic. That it was the Zabis who twisted an ideology based on the advancement of the human race into a pure struggle for power."

"It is," he agrees. "And my part in that is why I must die. The Principality must be ended for the true, more noble ideals of Zeon may be realized. That is what Lady Karn forced me to learn."

"Do you have any last requests?"

"Take care of the young Lady, and tell Nina something for me. Tell her that I'm sorry I wasn't as devoted to her as I was to my duty, and that I want her to promise that she'll move on."

"I'll do that. Are you sure this is what you need? It wouldn't be wrong to go on living for the right reasons."

Gato sighs. "I walk this path of my own accord. Do it."

Drawing your hyper rifles, you place a single shot each on the cockpit of the GP-02 and its weapon, destroying both.

As what little remains of the GP-02 topples to the earth, you swear you can hear someone wishing you luck, and asking one final request: that you never lose sight of your better nature, and that you do continue doing your utmost to create a world where that same side of humanity is allowed to show itself. A world without Zeon, without power struggles, and where young men and women won't be asked to sacrifice their lives for worthless causes.

Somehow, you get the feeling that's not the last you'll see of Anavel Gato.

The mood is one of sobriety as the Albion recovers its mobile suit teams. You're certain that your Newtype teammates could feel Gato's passing, though how much of his final wishes they sensed remains unclear. Nobody seems too keen to discuss the matter: especially Haman, who seems to consider her actions directly responsible for Gato's self-destructive final hours.

Nina, on the other hand, sits quietly at her desk while the Albion moves out of the area. The rush of recovering your machines now over, she seems to lack the energy to do anything else right now.

>>
>>34169765
That's true, being able to interrogate him would have been nice. Oh well. So we won't know about Operation Stardust early. I think that's nicely compensated for by the fact that the Naval Review won't get nuked. We'll actually have the resources to go after both colonies, now. Jamitov could still sabotage the fleet's chances, but given that his plan still works even if the colony drop gets foiled he might not try it. I'd say we've still come out of this ahead.

As you walk towards Haman, you bump into Uraki, who seems far less sombre than most of your crew. Understandable, you suppose. Having fought Gato before makes this a bit more personal, as does the revelation of his past with Nina.

"Go see to Nina," you tell the Ensign. "That's both a suggestion and a direct order."

As you near Haman, you see her give you a brief, tired wave. Carya nods and gives you a little space, as does Reiko, with whom Haman had been talking.

"You okay?" you ask the red-haired teen. "You took Gato's death a bit harder than I thought."

"I said horrible things to him," she explains, not even trying to hide her feeling of guilt. "And then he basically killed himself. I drove a man to kill himself, just by being THAT mean."

"I don't believe that," you tell her. "And I know you don't believe it either. He was suicidally devoted to Zeon as it was, and if you hadn't talked to him he would have taken that Gundam and killed us all with it. Instead he chose a third option that he felt suited him better."

"In a way, you sort of saved him. Not completely, but a little bit. Right before the end."

Carya picks this time to return. "He also forced Dominic into a situation where he had to destroy the GP-02 to protect the rest of us," she observes. "By making himself an exaggerated threat, and forcing us to destroy it? He made it so Zeon can't steal the thing again, and the EFF can't use it for whatever purposes it may have had in mind."

"So you're saying in the end," Haman replies slowly, "he gave his life for something noble?"

"And it was the shock you gave him that lead him to that decision," you conclude. "Be careful with your words and actions, Haman. Sometimes you can't truly predict what the effects might be."

"A martyr in the end, huh?" Reiko comments. "He may end up being forgotten, mocked, or used... but I still don't really understand him."

"Right," you mutter. "But what I CAN understand is that he was devoted to his ideals, even when that meant his death. That much, I suppose I can respect."

At the other end of the hangar, Nina embraces Ensign Uraki, and cries quietly into his shoulder.

The date is October 31st, UC 0083. You are Commander Dominic O'Hara, and your squad has accompanied the Albion into space in order to assist in mop-up operations against the Delaz fleet. First on the list of priorities is to stop by Von Braun for resupply and rearmament.

But for now, you and the sisters are content to relax and watch a movie on television, glad to not be on patrol or in the field for once.

"Hey, the hell is wrong with this thing?" Catrina complains as the signal seems to fade out. "Piece of junk."

Suddenly, the reason for the static is made obvious: someone is hijacking the datastream for their own broadcast.

On the screen, a bald man with a goatee stares you down. He wears the unmistakeable uniform of a Zeon officer.

"I address the Earth Federal Forces and the loyal warriors of the Duchy of Zeon. You now face the Delaz Fleet. The armistice that was signed to end the Zeon war of independence, also known to some as the One Year War, is nothing but a lie! It was signed by traitors, who appropriated the name "Republic of Zeon"."

"Well, fuck," the sisters curse in unison.

"Hey, you seeing this?" Karen asks you, walking into the ready room with Catherine and Reiko in tow.

You hold up one hand to shush them as the Admiral continues his diatribe.

"We, the forces of Zeon, have never lost sight of the war's objective, and soon you will have your proof! Of this, I can assure you. You have been forewarned!”

“Day after day, their memory has never left me: the memory of so many men and women lost to the fires of the battle for spacenoid independence, and the young people who fling themselves again to those flames. In response to the spacenoids' desire for freedom, the Federation continues to build up its crushing military might, and to pluck it out as it buds. I know this is true because I've seen the proof. Observe the results of our battle: these images show a pair of new mobile weapons, designed solely for offensive operations."

Behind the Admiral, on a giant screen, you can see footage of the attack on the La Vie en Rose, where mobile suits were trashed by the squad by Dendribium. Next to him is the image of the Physalis in its prime, along with footage of the nuclear weapons used at Kinbareid.

"How the hell did they get that?" Reiko hisses.

"From a dodai, maybe?" Catherine offers.

"he larger of the two is a machine of war capable of visiting untold destruction on any number of foes at once, and the latter is designed to deliver a nuclear warhead. On top of its obvious preparations for war, the Federation has even made moves to remove from power any figure it sees as a threat: I speak of course about the young daughter of the former Regent of Axis, Haman Karn, who was kidnapped in a sophisticated military operation against Axis. Not only has the Federation forced her cooperation with their plans for war, but the operation itself has served as a show of their reach. No spacenoid is beyond their tyrannical grasp: not even a sixteen year-old girl in the asteroid belt.”

Haman, curious about the commotion, walks into the room with Rossweisse just in time to see her image behind the Admiral, as well as footage of her capture from the Zeon side: no doubt recovered from Char's cockpit footage.

"... oh fuck me sideways," she mutters. "That's Bernini's doing, I just know it."

"Look back! What gave rise to the Zeon war of Independence? Why did we become followers of Zeon Zum Deikun?"

"Don't you dare use his fucking name," Catrina hisses under her breath. "How dare he sully the name of a man of peace?"

"For three long years we have all waited. We stand united, and not one person in our force will ever turn away from their duty! Now, with the blood of the young burning within us I declare war upon the Earth Federation government!"

"Wonderful," Karen mutters. "That's a great way to honor the dead: give them company."

"We shall ignore the whispers of what is known as a false peace! We shall repeat now, and forevermore what we hear in our hearts! To restore the glory of our homeland! Sieg Zeon!"

Audrey shakes her head. "This means the war's back on for real, doesn't it?"

You nod, and squeeze Rossweisse's shoulders as she sits next to you on the couch. You also throw an arm around the Sisters, hoping to calm their anger at Admiral Delaz's idiotic declaration of war.

"Yeah," you tell her. "It means we need to be ready. We've got work to do."

Thanks for running KoH.

Also, its kind of silly to post a 'It's up' message on twitter without posting the thread link.

Well then. That was fun. We all sort of knew this was coming, but we still hoped we might be able to prevent it. I mean, we're not responsible for the Gundam Development project being commissioned, and it's really just a pretext for what they were already planning anyway, but it still feels like we should have been able to keep them from getting the footage. Oh well. Anaheim was riddled with security leaks anyway, between that and Jamitov it was bound to happen. And it's not like we knew it was Haman when we captured her, so we can't really be blamed for that. Guess we;ll just have to roll with the punches.

On the plus side, they should basically be running a bluff. Axis and Mars should not be ready for war yet by any means.
