That’s what you should be focusing on, you should be working on that, or trying to see if someone is also trying to aim for the Grimoire, but… you can only cry. “Gee… what am I doing?”

You shouldn’t be acting like this, even if you feel that something horrible happened in another time or world, right now it doesn’t mean anything. You can no longer do anything about that, so why should you cry? It won’t help you, right?

Saints don’t have the luxury of being weak, and these tears are a weakness right? If Eden saw you, you are sure the Prince of Mars would laugh at you.

Thankfully you are alone sitting on a bench hidden in a random corner, so you doubt that your friends will find you. “Kouga, Kouga, are you unwell? Do you require my assistance?” You talked too fast.

That’s BT’s voice, and it’s quickly reaching you, so how do you respond to your friend who is probably worried for you?

The night has come to the city of Paris, and in this moment you truly understand why people call it the City of Light. You have seen the town on the foot on the Sanctuary, but compared to it, the almost endless lights of civilization that surround you shine brightly, driving the darkness away with their illuminance.

Maybe this place is not that bad, at least it can be this beautiful. But you can’t waste time admiring the sights, if you do that too much people might think you are some kind of country boy and make fun of you! No, you have to be cool, a true gentleman like Al.

That’s why you quickly wipe your face, and try to cheer up as best as you can, even if the night is getting chilled, you try to keep things calm. Seeing BT appear around the corner, you wave at her ignoring the chill that is almost freezing you right now, and motion to your friend to come near you.

“Target Locked!” BT simply homes into your position, and takes a seat beside you on the small bench. “I will ask again, Kouga are you feeling unwell. As I understand, you left the premises of the museum in a abrupt manner, and thus lead me to worry about your emotional state.”

You are not sure what to say, but a part of you feels that BT is probably not the sort of person that would help you with an emotional issue like this. BT is the sort of girl that would tackle this with logic, and you are sure that your random crying session has little logic to it, “No, sorry, I just was tired, so I wanted to go outside.”

“I understand, taking a rest from investigations is a fine choice.” BT stares at you intently for a moment, and for a moment you think she knows you are lying, but thankfully the girl does not push the issue.

A sudden chilling breeze flows through the small plaza that leads to the museum, and you shiver like winter has come early to the city, and that’s why you jump in surprise when Versa hugs you from the side. “Wait Versa, what are you doing?”

You aren’t used to getting many hugs from people besides Master Integra and Sonia (Master Paradox is not someone you see all the time), so the warmth that floods at you from your side makes you feel strange.

But Versa ignores how uncomfortable you feel (your maidenly heart is maidenly) and just replies stoically, “The temperature has lowered more than expected, and as I understand the best way to resolve these situations is by sharing body heat. This is merely the most efficient method to regulate the temperatures of our bodies and avoid a situation that might hindrance the mission.”

That is logical (kinda), the shirt you are wearing is not really helping you in this cool night, and you doubt that the summer dress BT is wearing is helping her any better, so maybe this is really the most efficient method to do this.

You are simply doing this because it’s efficient, okay.

The heat you feel from your side is keeping the cold Parisian air away from you, so you simply nod and lean against your friend. This is the warmth that comes from another person, the proof that they are alive, knowing this you allow yourself to experience the heat transferring process.

Hearing Versa’s heartbeat in this cold night is helping you cheer up… what happened there was an illusion something that never happened, so there is no reason to be sad, right?

Maybe you are being unfair with BT by not asking her to help you. Sure you problem might feel illogical to you, but maybe BT’s systematic mind can be the thing that helps you this this mess.

You wait a few moments, as you see people pass around the plaza until you gather your words and talk, “To be honest… I feel weird. While I was in the museum, I suddenly felt sad, and started crying.” You start explaining this mess to BT, you talk about that sudden burst of emotions that lead to you running away from the mission, “I feel like I did something wrong… and because of that, someone paid the price for me.”

Black Tarantula silently hears your confession, and after not seeing her respond you simply finish this, “I guess you think this is too illogical for you, I know that the best way to handle this is to ignore it, but… I can’t. I guess I shouldn’t have bothered you with this… sorry, BT.” You try to stand from your side of the bench, but you feel Versa stop you.

“You are right, as far as I understand... this situation quite is illogical. But the Professor once told me that just because something does not fit established preconceptions, I am not allowed to ignore it. If something is illogical, then I should try my best to reason out a logical explanation for that situation.” An Alchemist is not allowed to run away from the truth, because the only way to obtain victory is by acknowledging the truth, even if it is unpleasant.

“That’s why I will try to help you as best as I can, Kouga!” You never expected that, but you think that BT is serious about this, “From what I can understand, what you are feeling is probably a subconscious reaction, this sudden sadness might have been caused by a repressed memory.” So the memory might be from a trauma you buried or something, but you don’t feel that ever happened.

If you tried to bury the truth about a trauma in the darkness of your heart, you are sure that by know you would be suspecting about that. No, whatever caused this mess is not a repressed memory or something like that.

“So it’s not correct, I understand… then seeing as you are sure that whatever caused this emotional reaction in you never happened. A good hypothesis might be that you might be experiencing mental contamination from an outside source. In other words someone is implanting these emotions into your brain to make you hallucinate.”

“Sorry BT, but as a witch I am used to those sort of tricks, and because I am resilient to most Dark Magics, it would take a great dark mage to do something like this… no, I am sure this is something else. But thanks, BT.” That doesn’t discount that there might be someone using another type of magic to implant an emotion on you, but you really doubt that whatever you are feeling is fake… it’s real, you know it.

Black Tarantula simply stays silent for a moment, contemplating her answer before she talks. “Then, for now, I will trust your instincts and accept that there is no mental manipulation involved.” You kinda expected her to protest some more, but this works. “The professor once told me that emotional responses are not wholly logical, thus what I would suggest is that you simply face them on, and accept them.”

Versa separates from your side for a moment, as she softly turns your head so you face her directly with her hands. “Accepting the situation logically is the only way to move forward, Kouga. You might have done something that might have hurt someone, then simply accept that and cry if you feel the need to. If you need help with this illogical situation, then I will do my best to comfort you, Kouga!” BT extends her arms widely to her side, welcoming you to lean on her shoulder and cry.

This is a hard thing to do, sure you would love to jump into Versa’s arms, but this is just too soon. You just met the girl not even a week ago and now this… this is too much for your weak maidenly heart!

So you stay silent, nether accepting BT’s invitation to let your feeling flow but not rejecting it. In the end you awkwardly sit in the bench with your back straight and looking forward only, but you make sure to stay near BT.

This is very uncomfortable.

“While this was not an unexpected outcome.” Even though BT murmurs this in a monotone, she still separates from you completely and simply pouts, “I have to admit I am mildly disappointed with it.” This is probably the first time you have seen your friend acting angry, and you still think she looks kinda cute like this.

“But I will not desist, thankfully the professor taught me several methods on to persuade allies. Let me ensure you throw your hesitation away and deal correctly with your emotional burdens!” No longer content to simply wait for you to open up, BT instantly turns around and lunges over to hug you!

There is no escape, you are like a fly trapped in the cute web spun by the Black Tarantula, and thus you can only helplessly await the hug! “Kouga, do not fear! I shall be the one who fills your dark (/sad) soul with light! (/happiness!)” There is no escape, in the end this path only leads to the light called happiness!

But before you meet you cuddly end, BT freezes and suddenly you grow alert. “Kouga… be careful, there is an alchemist here.” It appears there is someone else that was witnessing the cute comedy BT and you were performing on the plaza.

Your partner instantly separates from you, and stands before the bench, ready to intercept any enemies, while you stay down, and concentrate on sensing any foes.

Knowing that her cover is blown, a black haired young woman walk up to you, wearing what looks like a grey jump suit, you just can’t help thinking she doesn’t look that dangerous. “Good Evening, Saints of the Sanctuary. First I must thank you for avoiding making a scene in the museum, I appreciate that.”

Her slim body and short hair makes you think she is a boy at first, but you don't allow that to trick you, you know a cute girl when you see one, and this girl is definitely cute. Now you hope she doesn't try to kill you.

The girl is an alchemist, and you are sure she is here for the same reason you are here. This alchemist probably came for the Grimoire. The question is, would this alchemist be willing to fight you for the book?

What do you do? You doubt she wants to fight you now, so maybe this girl came here to talk?

Black Tarantula keeps her position in front of you, as if she wants to shield you from the enemy alchemist, and while you appreciate that, you softly push aside your friend, and confront the newcomer, “Miss, could you be so kind to introduce yourself. I believe you might be an alchemist, but we can never be sure.”

For a moment you fear that BT might launch herself and attack the alchemist, but thankfully your fellow Saint (kinda, you don’t think that BT really considers herself a Saint in the same way you do) holds herself back, and allows the alchemist to talk.

The alchemists simply ignores Black Tarantula, and now you realize that the whole time her eyes have been glued on you, and only you. “Why thank you for the opportunity Black Pegasus Saint, I am glad you are rational enough enough to not escalate hostilities. Thank you once again. To keep things short, I am an Alchemist of Atlas and a member of the Far East Alchemy Army.”

The Girl pulls out an white metallic hexagon, enumerated with the roman numeral 32, “My name is Vivianca Barlobello, but if you want you may call me Vivi! I am an alchemist warrior who fights for the sake of justice!” The girl, Vivi smiles as she strikes a pose that wouldn’t be that strange in a heroic comic or in one of the animes Master Integra likes.

Still, while that was cute, that doesn’t mean you can trust this alchemist girl. The Far East Army was the one who captured Victor III and took him to Japan, so you have to be wary about this girl.

“So why are you in this location, then Alchemist Warrior Vivianca? These places are outside the jurisdiction of the Far East Alchemist Army, your presence here does not make sense.” BT is the one who keeps asking questions, and now you now that your friend really doesn’t like this alchemist you just met.

You feel like you are going to stop onto a landmine, but you have to ask this “Alchemist Vivi, why are you so hostile to BT, my dear friend has done nothing to you!” If the alchemist tries to start anything with Versa, then you promise her to introduce you to the boot of your cloth. No one messes with the people you care for.

“Mmm, I see…” The alchemists head turns from you to your partner, deep in thought until she finally decides something, “then allow me to explain! Since the ancient times one of the main purposes of the Alchemist Warriors has been to hunt out-of-control homunculus, in a way similar to how the Holy Church hunts down Vampires. Your friend here is not my enemy right now, so I am sure she and I can get along just fine.” You nod silently, as you get her point. If you asked a member of the church to work with a Vampire, even if the blood-sucker was a good guy there would be a similar tension in the group.

But unnoticed to you, a short wordless exchange happened between the two girls.

Well, having resolved that, you move to something more critical to this mess, “Then what about the Grimoire, how did you find out about it?” If the information has spread this far, then there might be a problem, a big one, this whole thing grow up to a big mess.

“I see you are already worrying about who might have also found out about our little magic tool, good, that’s smart, and justice has to be smart. But to be honest, Atlas only found out about this because of a coincidence, I don’t think the information about this Grimoire has dispersed that much at the moment, so I believe that only the organization in the Area are the ones that are informed about this.”

In other words, VIvi means that only the Parisian organization and the local branches know about the Book (and have had time to do something about it), which means that while there are other people interested in this, it’s not as bad as it could be. While Local organizations could be hard to deal with, at least it doesn't mean that the big organizations have brought their big guns and turned this city into a true battlefield.

For a moment you think of asking about Victor III, but asking it as one of your first questions might seem too impulsive, maybe you should try something more subtle, like asking first about what Black Dragon and your raid against him.

But Vivi just smiles, ignoring any hostile tone in your question, “I am glad you asked that, to be honest, besides my partner, I am the only alchemist in the city. Currently, Atlas is in a state of emergency and has deployed both Alchemists Armies to contain several disasters, to the extent that they had to mobilize the Eastern Alchemist Army to Egypt and ask the Sanctuary for help to deal with some rogues.”

Vivi frowns a bit as she continues her pitch, “So here is the deal, Atlas is too understaffed and they only managed to spare my partner and I to protect this region, and I am sad to say that we can’t handle this mess. So here is what I want from you two, in the name of the longstanding friendship of our two organizations, Saints of Athena, would you be willing to work alongside us Alchemists to contain the Grimoire in this city and deal with those who wish to misuse it?” So she wants to partner up with your team, sounds interesting. “Black Pegasus, would you be willing to help me protect the peace and justice of this city?”

You aren’t sure if you can trust this alchemist, or if she is even saying the truth, but this is a tempting offer. You are sure by now that someone placed this Grimoire as a bait for someone (probably not you, considering that stupid black jar), so having allies to deal with this might be good. Then again, this girl might be the one who set up this bait, and wants to make you drop your guard and ambush you... maybe.
