The Lieutenant salutes again: as you outrank him, and likely his CO, he has no choice. And given the fact that you've already announced that you're in Special Operations, he's probably too intimidated to voice his objections. "Order understood, sir. I'll see to it the machine in question is delivered to the Albion."

"Hear that, Sergeant?" you ask over the phone. "See about making room, or else getting Kowen to finally fork over a ship for us to use."

“Admiral Wyatt,” Captain Synapse greets as you walk in: Nina, Karen, and South are all standing in the room already, looking at the screen with Wyatt's face on it in varying degrees of disinterest.

“Captain Synapse, Captain Joshua. What's the meaning of this interruption?”

“Sir,” Synapse replies. “At the suggestion of Admiral Kowen, we wish to issue our joint report on the capture of the Val Varo, as well as report the progress that's been made on decoding the information captured during the defense of the La Vie en Rose.”

“Very well then, I'll hear your report.” The Admiral sighs and visibly settles into his chair.

"He probably intends to make the surface habitable for easy resource extraction," Catherine hypothesizes.

Reiko doesn't seem so sure. "He could also be setting it up as an agricultural colony," she offers.

"You give that man too much credit," Haman retorts. "He's probably thinking too short term for agriculture to even factor into the decision. It's almost certainly to make it habitable for mining teams."

"Thanks, Audrey," Karen finishes. "Nothing we can do about it now... unlike this report."

Your Captain holds out a file to be passed around the group. "Evidence of movement in the Garden of Thorns. We don't know where he's going, but he's likely preparing an attack."

"Meaning if they switch sides, it's over for Delaz even if he manages an attack that levels the playing field," Audrey concludes.

"I'll continue processing the intel we got from Miss Garahau," Catherine offers.

"And the upgrades for the Liliums? How long until those are ready?" you ask Emary.

She shakes her head. "At best speed, slow. The systems will take a long time to calibrate to a new user, and we're having trouble miniaturizing the Minovsky Searcher. Nina's best guess for shakedown time was some time in December, but if we pooled our resources we could have one ready by Tuesday. Like I offered earlier."

"Possibility of reinforcements and sympathizers complicating things?" you finish.

Haman shakes her head. "One hundred percent."

Today is November 5th, UC 0084. The last two days have gone without incident. Kelley Layzner has so far refused any information aside from that which you already know: Cima was here at some point, and he was refurbishing a Val Varo for delivery to the Delaz fleet. The Val Varo has finally been cleared of explosives and is ready for transport: it will likely take up an entire hangar by itself. Emary, however, wants to take it to the La Vie en Rose with the intention of fitting it with a control setup that would allow a psycommu user to pilot it remotely rather than redesigning the whole cockpit for someone with two arms.

Captain Synapse has also received orders from Admiral Kowen to patrol for the Cima fleet within Lunar orbit, and has elected to follow the Birmingham. His reasoning was that for a man so obsessed with the Naval Review going off without a hitch, it was strange for the Admiral to be taking his flagship AWAY from Earth.

Well, yeah. Char took out five of them because they were on the front line. The Trafalgar is meant to be a supporting vessel and should not be on the front line period. In fact, it should deploy chaff and deploy it's contingent of suits to stand on the hull as AA is worthless.

The main reason I wanted the ship as it's a known quantity. The crew has been blooded in combat and won't be green like the Pegasus we're getting. Plus if it survived the War, then she's gotta have a bit of luck hanging to her keel.

Yeah, the Grey Phantom. No explanation is ever given for how it got wrecked, though. The last time anyone saw it the ship was in perfect condition, then Unicorn comes along and it's crashed in the desert. I don't know what that's about. But it doesn't matter. "Haman, let's work on your maneuvering," you offer. "Carya, Catrina, you can take Rossweisse out for a spin."

Your team salutes, and you eventually launch off the catapult one at a time. Quickly you find that Haman is being pressed by Karen, who opts for a turning match which pushes your Lilium towards its performance limits. While Haman can't nail down Karen's suit, she manages to not only avoid the simulated grenades but a burst of fire from the Viola: Catrina's trying to help Rossweisse improve her deflection shooting skills.

Eventually, under combined assault from both the Viola and Iris, Karen's suit takes a fatal blow: but not before striking for minor damage against both. For someone so out of practice, and unused to high-spec suits like these, Karen did quite well and she knows it.

A shot from your Hyper Rifles knocks out Audrey's machine, which seems to have had some sort of problems with its simulated weapon, leaving you to tangle with the Viola piloted by Rossweisse. The two machines end up in virtual standstill: while you can't quite help Haman compensate for the slower charging times of the Hyper Rifles, Rossweisse is having an equal amount of trouble with the beam machine gun while engaging in turning fights.

Finally, after having Haman split the rifles, she manages to predict Rossweisse's dodging patterns, and catches her with a one-two shot that causes significant enough "damage" to force Rosse and the Sisters to acknowledge defeat.

Meanwhile it seems that the Burning team is having more unusual results: South and Monsha quickly render Chap and Keith's slower GM Cannon IIs harmless, showering them with fire and simply outmaneuvering them. In retaliation Kou takes down Monsha in a spectacular three-way "wagon wheel" engagement by suddenly reversing the turn and closing with his beam saber. Finally, South seems to lose control briefly while trying to keep up with the vastly superior Zephyranthes, giving Kou a free shot.

The Burning team's initial performance is lackluster. South seems to be able to keep up with Karen's Kämpfer until a sneaky shot from Audrey causes him to dodge right into Karen's beam saber. The simulated shot tracks past South and Karen, disabling Monsha's GM Custom.

"Shit!" both men shout into their microphones almost simultaneously.

Using the opening, Rossweisse darts in, and Haman follows her. Two simulated Hyper Rifle shots pass the Viola on either side, hitting Chap's suit and forcing a desperate evasion from Keith. One shot from Kou's rifle nails the Kämpfer's head, causing Karen to withdraw, and a second nearly hits Audrey, who snap-shoots in response to give Karen time to withdraw. What Kou fails to notice in time is that Rossweisse has finished her assault, and has closed in on him.

As a second shot from Haman takes out Keith's GM Cannon, Rossweisse blasts past the Zephyranthes, scoring a few solid hits with her machine gun. As the Zephyranthes turns to line up a shot against the rapidly jinking Viola, a shot each from the Iris and the Lilium end the battle.

"You're just too damn fast," South observes as your suits are recalled to the Albion. "It's a massive advantage, and you pressed it well together."

"Good job letting Rossweisse take the lead," you compliment Haman. "You covered her well."

"And good job, Rossweisse," you add. "You pulled that off perfectly."

Aboard the Albion, you and your team settle in while Audrey discusses what went wrong with her rifle with Nina: apparently it had something to do with the simulated stresses on the feed ramp, and the weapon would need to be redesigned before a prototype could be constructed.

As your machines close in, you can see the situation more clearly. Several sustained bursts of machine gun fire cause your teams to disperse somewhat, and you can hear South complaining about some minor damage. He was at the center of the formation, and had little room to maneuver as you approached.

"Hold fire," you hear a familiar voice. "O'Hara, is that you?"

"Cima?" you respond. "The hell?"

"You just HAD to show up now," she hisses. "I'm withdrawing my forces, make a show of it!"

Watching one Musai tumble after having been hit by the Birmingham, you notice what had made you doubt the whole situation: Cima's flagship hasn't actually hit the Birmingham, despite their relatively close ranges, and the Birmingham has missed most of its shots as well. The number of bullets from the Gelgoog marines missing your own team seems ludicrous as well.

"Put on a show, but let them fall back!" you order the Albion's suits, careful not to tip off the Birmingham.

Your own team seem confused, but do as you say. On the other hand, you see Monsha line up a shot on Cima's suit... though a short burst from Catrina's beam rifle spoils his aim.

"Sorry," she lies. "You should really try to avoid wandering into my field of fire like that."

After about five minutes of fake fighting, the Cima fleet seems to have gotten away.

The Albion is closing the distance with the Birmingham, but the situation seems clear. Still, you have your own doubts...

"Negative, the purge function is disabled. Noticing a power fluctuation in the central heat transfer system. This thing's gonna fucking explode," he concludes, popping his hatch open.

"Hey, Uraki? Catch me, would you?" Then, Burning pushes away from his stricken GM, only to be caught by the Zepyranthes.

You shake your head. "She just wanted me to stay out of the way and keep inconveniencing Delaz."

Karen sighs. "Okay, so that's that. Another dead end."

"Hopefully Admiral Wyatt got the information he needed," Audrey offers.
