Your mind goes back to your fitful and strange dreams of the night before as you kneel at the low, wooden table waiting for the landlady, whom you now know as Miya Asama, to serve breakfast. Kazehana kneels across from you both diminished from the landlady's scolding and looking more fresh after a bath. You try to connect the disparate scenes and images.

Your breath frosts in the cold air as you lay nude upon a slab of smooth, glassy rock. Your blood is warm and your heartbeat regular. The calm your body feels only serves to put your mind into panic. You want to get up, but can't. You want to thrash around, but you can't. It's as though you are a puppet whose string have been cut.

Your vision blurs. Your rage and terror are silent. Confined in your mouth. In fact, the only thing that happens is that your mouth becomes sand dry. Glowing red eyes loom over you. A faint smile. Thus ends the first vision.

You stand in a darkened pit. You wiggle your toes and dig into the sand. An attack! You dodge and strike back into the darkness. No, it is not darkness but a multitude of phantasmal foes. Pain surges through your nerves. Pain that burns hot as molten lead. You snarl and steel yourself. But with what mantra do you ready yourself?

You apologize and absorb the smell of eggplants in a rich broth called 'miso' which mingles with that of the steamed rice and what appears to be broiled trout. You dig in with gusto. The rich flavors, which have a certain quality that doesn't fit into the salty-sweet-bitter-sour paradigm. You rather like it and say as much. Miya politely covers her mouth as she softly laughs.

“You are a strange person 'Kiddo,'” she says, adopting Kazehana's nickname, “You probably have more in common with me or her than the people you meet on a daily basis.”

The screen rustles as it is unceremoniously swept open by another brunette woman wearing a shirt emblazoned with a star. She carries herself in a relaxed manner as she kneels at the table get her breakfast. Her chocolate eyes linger on you.

“Ah, Kazehana, did you finally get a boyfriend? I thought you'd go after someone a little older than this kid. No offense, bro.”

“It's not like that, Uzume,” she says, “How was your night?”

This Uzume yawns, “Long, y'know. Probably not as fun as your long night.”

“Would you please show a little decorum?” says Miya, serenely smiling.

A sudden chill sweeps over you. Uzume merely redirects her attention

“Bro, you need some new clothes.”

“You should call him 'Kiddo' like the rest of us,” adds Kazehana.

Breakfast proceeds with an amiable atmosphere, though you do not much contribute to the conversation. Instead, you occupy yourself with copying the enviable etiquette of the landlady.

Once breakfast concludes, you move to the kitchen to help Miya clean dishes. You just start scrubbing; better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Just after you get started, she grabs your wrist. Her grip is hard as iron, but her face is kind. The sort of thing you'd expect from a person who doesn't know her own strength.

“Please use the soap. You do it like this.”

She demonstrates squeezing a pleasant-smelling goop onto the dishes, and then scrubbing it into suds. You never knew that you would find soap like that.

“Do you have a name?” she asks, “I'd rather not just refer to you by Kazehana's nickname?”

“I don't remember; I don't remember a lot of things,” you say.

“Is that so? It's a good thing that Kazehana took you in; she has a good heart. This city is getting more dangerous.”

You watch her skirt swish as she gracefully works her way through the kitchen.

“About that. What did you mean when you said that I was more like you?”

“A hunch. Don't think too much about it.”

You frown and reply, “I need to know who I am. What's different about you?”

“I wasn't expecting you to be so truly ignorant, 'Kiddo.' Very well, I am not human. Nor do I think that you are human, or at least entirely human either.”

“But what does it mean?”

“I don't know. You are different. Also, thank you for you help; I appreciate it,” she says.

You nod, filled with yet more questions that you doubt she can answer. You suspect that this ties into your dreams. You know that there is a gaping emptiness in your psyche that was once filled. Once you finish with the dishes, you consider what to do next

You slide open yet another screen and make your way to the yard. That dream felt so real. You hope it was a memory. Maybe you'll remember something about yourself. On the other hand, if those scenes were memories, perhaps you'd rather just forge a new destiny. Such a path must have been filled with suffering and other things better left forgotten.

You let the cool morning air fill your lungs. It is harsh, yes, but good. You don't even need to think as you assume a stance. Your body simply knows how to act in this rehearsal. With speed you cut inside imaginary foes, smashing faces and ribs with quick jabs of your elbow. Every so often, having closed, you throw in a kick from an unexpected angle, smashing your heel into invisible spines. Close, deflect, strike, move on. Relentless efficiency and speed. The patience of a saint. You feel as though you are aware of other methods and schools of movement, but this suits you best.

“Wow, that's some cool stuff, bro! Where'd you learn to do that?”

It seems you had an admirer. The chocolate-eyed Uzume. She smiles. You shrug.

“I don't remember,” you admit.

For once, such an admission feels comfortable. As she approaches, she pinches her nose.

As you walk barefoot onto the wooden floor you realize that you really don't know what you are doing here. You just know that this sort of bath is different, and that your instincts might be wrong. Like they were with scrubbing the dishes.

“Kiddo, don't tell me you've never seen a bath before,” calls Kazehana from down the hall.

It doesn't. She merely tells you the peculiarities of how it's done here and leaves you to bathe yourself. You suppose that the landlady's lingering threat prevented her from acting in a more flirtatious manner. After some time, you finish and dress yourself.

You kneel in the living room, enjoying a cup of tea. Time flits slowly past, and you delight in observing the subtleties in its passage. The way shadows move. The way the scents of cooking and tea fade. The miniscule movement of the hands of the clock. It brings you a sense of peace. Then, Uzume comes in

You quirk your eyebrows. However, before you can do anything, she drags you out of your seat and forces a pair of sandals on your feet.

“Follow me,” Uzume commands, “I know a thing or two about dress up.”

So, you follow her into this new world of wonders. You ride a train for the first time and rather dislike it. Too small and too many people. Like fish in a barrel. You catch jealous looks from time to time from men, not that it bothers you. Finally, you are able to escape only to find yourself in an even thicker crowd. This doesn't bother you so much, being under an open sky.

However, as Uzume drags you into a building she calls a 'department store,' something catches your eye.
