The year is 2054. It had been fourteen years since the 24th Macross Class Emigration Fleet, the Macross Avalon, had departed from Earth. Aboard were over five million souls.

You were one such soul and everyone called you Pecker. If curious eggheads weren’t annoying and troublesome, you wouldn’t know what was. You would know. Your father was one. It didn’t help that your current mission was getting more complicated by the minute. Originally you were tapped in for some secretive convoy protection. That was simple. It turned out that the convoy, and principle, in question was a transport/mobile laboratory. That didn’t raise any eyebrows. Then they started chattering about some problems on their end. That was where you volunteered to go check it out. Maybe you shouldn’t have and let either Huck or Baker check it out instead.

Atop a table sat what looked like boiling tar in a large beaker. It wasn’t under a flame or anything. It was just sitting in a beaker. You were almost afraid to ask what exactly it was but you did. The answer they gave you was that it was a GAME specimen. You remembered that the Avalon and Spacy had managed to capture some samples a little while ago. It fulfilled the whole gelatinous and amorphous parts of its name alright but it didn’t seem mechanical. Whatever you thought, it clearly was, given that it was messing with the mass spectrometer that was aboard. Clearly it was producing some kind of signal. To make things worse something in had fallen over.

It was the crust sample from the BK-201 planetoid you were currently on. More specifically, the glass container it was put it had fallen and the crust sample was nowhere to be seen. Of course the scientists, or at least, the one responsible for it, were going to get to the bottom of the mystery. Meanwhile, you were going to,

You weren’t being paid to ask questions. The sooner they got their shit squared away, the faster you could get off this rock and back to civilisation. You pocket your pistol and move about the slightly cramped interior of the lab, looking under the tables and between the spaces people weren’t likely to search. Supposedly the crust sample was supposed to be a chunk of the planetoid with a white top layer and a yellowish bottom layer. You couldn’t imagine where it could have gone, especially being a soil sample. It wasn’t like it had legs and started moving on its own, right?

Well maybe it didn’t need legs to move. There was a trail of yellow near the cockpit which seemed likely. While you didn’t step in it, you did stop to examine the weird viscous jelly that was left behind. The crust sample was quivering in a corner and emitting a small waft of smoke. It was making a sizzling noise that you hoped was not related at all to the sound of acid eating away at metal. Looking around you could spot some glass containers that were probably chemically inert enough but maybe you should leave this one to the scientists.

It was a simple matter of calling the scientists over. They were carrying chemically inert glass, the kind that you saw nearby and were edging closer and closer to the sample. You just stood back and let them have a go. They were presumably taking the appropriate precautions or so you assumed. As one of the scientists closed in, the sample burst like an overripe melon spraying the area and the unfortunate scientist with bits of yellow slime. For the most part his clothes held up but it was visibly eating away at it as he retreated and flailed about. You stood back as more rushed to his aid, both to clean the mess and help prevent further contamination. On one hand you should be concerned but on the other, that could have been you. Without the proper equipment to deal with it who knew what could happen. You kept an eye on the GAME sample while their dealt with their problem.

As prepared as they were they couldn’t clean off their colleague completely and you saw him stumble out with two others guiding him. They were headed to a medical quarantine. The beaker beside you stirred as he walked by and you stabilised it.

“Hey Pecker, what’s going on down there?” Sergei asked over the comms.

“They’re having a bit of a problem with hazardous materials,” you replied.

“No need to be alarmed, we have everything under control over here,” one of the scientists added.

“Well I guess if they do you could come back up then.”

“I’ll keep watching,” you replied, “enough has gone wrong already.”

Sergei snorted and let you get back to babysitting the scientists. The one that was keeping you company, and an eye on the GAME sample, struck up conversation shortly,

“It’s fascinating stuff, even if it wasn’t what we envisioned would happen.”

“Let’s just say I’m wondering where your lab safety went,” you replied.

“You have to understand that we’re dealing with the unknown here,” he argued, “We have no idea what was going to happen. Besides we stand to benefit enormously if we can unlock the secrets of this metamaterial.”

“You can’t tell what it’s made off?”

“Superficially yes, but it doesn’t behave at all like any compound we’ve ever seen,” he gestured to the GAME sample, “They resist most impacts fine.”

He demonstrated by finding a wrench and bashing across the surface of the boiling tar-like substance. Just moments before impact, the whole surface solidified and as impact caused ripples along its surface.

“See?” the scientist continued, “We’ve detected superficial similarities on this planetoid and we can’t help but think they’re connected somehow.”

Your chat was interrupted by another scientist who had come to fetch you. Apparently they needed an extra pair of hands, your hands to be exact. The small quarantine they had set up was in the back. The afflicted scientist was separated by a glass cell. Sound was not carried through but you could clearly understand that he was screaming, such that his face was turning blue. The other two were staring nervously as their colleague’s affliction tortured him.

“So what do you need me for again?” you asked.

“Well we’re wondering if we could get your help restraining him before he hurts himself,” one of them answered.

“Are you stupid?” the other was incredulous, “It’s far more humane to just end his suffering at this point.”

It had been less than five minutes since the incident prior to this.

You weren’t going to take any chances. This was the unknown and you’d rather not end up like the chap across from you if it were transmissible. Just reaching for your pistol was enough to give them the hint. Once you had it up and sighted, they opened the cell. If you weren’t prepared you may have hesitated when the poor man charged you. He wasn’t in his right mind and after two shots he didn’t have one anymore. Collapsing backwards with a dull thump, the body continued to twitch. Death throes you figured. Still, you emptied the rest of the magazine before it stopped. You give it a few nudges with your boot while you reload. Just to be sure. It didn’t look like he, or it, was getting back up again.

“Pecker we registered your sidearm going off, you sure everything is alright?” Sergei popped up again.

“Just took care of it,” you replied.

You turned to the scientists as they secured the corpse,

“We done here?”

“Yes I suppose,” one of them, “We really should get back. Thank goodness Billy decided to donate his body to science.”

“Uh okay,” Sergei was still on the comms, “How about you come up and explain what happened to me?”

You did so. Five minutes later and everyone was getting ready to take off and fold back to the Avalon. Just as you were exiting the atmosphere however, a thought strikes you. Did you really want, whatever it was, to go back to your home? You’ve seen enough movies to know how this was going to go and well…

>>
You weren’t being paranoid, just cautious.

“Hey Sergei, SMS have any secure containment facilities or stuff like that?” you asked.

“One, that I know of anyway,” he replied, “I understand your concerns Pecker, we’ll get them scrubbed down and all that jazz. Huck, Baker, escort these gentlemen to the Locker.”

“Right-o boss,” Huck’s voice seems much more menacing than it normally did.

It didn’t take much convincing to divert the scientists’ lab ship. They did grumble a bit about protocol but were very understanding of your concerns. Though that may just be because between the four Valkyries you had enough ordnance to sink a frigate and then some.

“We’re not going with them?” you wondered.

“No we got bigger fish to fry,” Sergei said, “We need to fold back to the Avalon ASAP.”

You didn’t have any arguments there as the fold space bubble-thing swallowed your Valkyrie and compressed the time taken to travel a vast distance of space in to a manageable chunk. An hour and a bit later you were spat out to an ongoing space battle. The UI was being lit up with IFFs and blinking icons whilst radio chatter started to filter through. In the distance you could make out puffs of light, explosions. Those were probably a minute or two old as you sped in to the combat zone around the Avalon.

“Boomerang-1 and -4 are on station,” Sergei reported, “Sit rep please.”

“Affirmative Boomerang-1,” Irina’s voice came through, “This is Gunsight-6, form up. Intercept everything in your way.”

“Roger that.”

You could see now that the forces arrayed were roughly equal as the GAME brought several more of their frigate sized ships. However, they didn’t have much sophistication in terms of tactics. Mostly they just attempted to ram straight in to whatever was in their way. The small fighter sized ones weren’t so different though they exhibited more cloud like behaviour.

You picked on something your own size. Besides, it looked like the smaller GAME were being pests and while Spacy had a handle of them for the moment, your firepower could probably make more a difference against them. You volleyed the missiles in to a mass before a few broke off on you. Thankfully, your experience with the GAME had proven valuable. As they closed, you twisted out of the way violently. Even in the flight suit you felt it. Though they didn’t let up, steadily piling the pressure on you as took them out in calculated bursts of fire. Even with a close shave or two, you still managed to thin out their numbers a bit. Sergei similarly burst through a wall of the small fighters.

Both of you emerged in time to see the Macross Quarter transform and physical catch one of the bigger GAME. It threw the offending alien ship off course before manoeuvring closer to Avalon’s main island. It seemed that it was the main target of this attack. The fighters were simply acting as a moving wall, a shield, against the bombers of the fleet and whatever long range batteries were available. The darkness was lit up with beams that criss-crossed each other. Exhaust trails danced about and around them as Spacy VF-171s tried shaking off their pursuers by leading them in to the line of fire. It was a smart idea and you were starting to run low on ammunition. Between them and rearmament still stood a good deal of GAME fighters, the only choice was how to approach this,

You stuck it out in fighter mode. If the Spacy could do it, then you could too, and probably not worse, given your experience. With your HUD synced up to the ordnance being flung your way, it wasn’t hard to simply manoeuvre out of the line of fire. It was a shame that you didn’t count on the GAME to follow you almost exactly. For every twist and turn, they would attempt to match it at best as they could. With the amount still on your tail you’d have run out of ammunition by now if you were to try and dispose of them in BATTROID mode. Which was why you leveraged the best part about being in a fighter. You pushed the thrust up as far as it went and shifted as the acceleration took hold as you started to outpace the fighters. Surely someone else could swoop in and clean them up. No time to think about that now, you were drawing close to the Arthur, the Macross Quarter class that was your home plate.

“This is Boomerang-4 requesting permission to land,” you asked.

“Negative,” Gunsight-6 returned, “Too many on you.”

Well apparently nobody thought about you being chased by over several dozen GAME fighters. Good thing they didn’t have guns or you’d be toast by now. Well the Arthur had a big beam cannon. That should be enough to clear the fighters off you if you timed the dodge correctly. It’d be close though. As you scrambled for alternatives, you noticed a familiar Queadluun-Rhea take off from the deck of the Arthur. It was Claudia. She also had your big sniper rifle in hand. Maybe you could ask her for a favour?

You knew your rifle best out of anyone in the fleet considering you built it. It certainly did not have enough shots to even get rid of the fighters on your tail. You needed a bigger gun. Dad would probably be proud at the thought.

“Gunsight-6 please forward your firing coordinates,” you asked.

“Affirmative,” Irina’s voice replied, “And for the record Pecker you are insane.”

“It’s a bad habit I know,” you cheerily swerved in to the line of fire.

The plan was sound in theory though you did underestimate the size of the beam a bit. It grazed nothing important. You didn’t need a left wing and tails fly in space anyway. The GAME were vaporised trying to follow your suicidal path. Tugging your collar a bit, you realised you were sweating. As for the battle itself, it was winding down as the big frigates were wiped out, leaving a confused mass of fighters that were methodically picked off with long range fire.

You landed as best you could with one engine functional and the few manoeuvring thrusters that still functioned. They had to clear space for you as you skidded to a stop along the flat belly of your Valkyrie. You couldn’t even get out seeing as your cockpit was fused shut on one side. It took at least another half hour before they managed to pry it open. They had to make sure your Variable Fighter wasn’t just going to burst in to flames or anything like that. The flame retardant was so thick you were tempted to just jump out and trust it to cushion your fall. By then the Arthur was back in the dock and Sergei was waiting to debrief you, probably. You could use a drink however. What you just did was a bit too much for your sober mind.

You slowly descended and stumbled off the Macross and back to the bar you built, flight suit and all. Slowly, you removed your helmet and set it on the counter with shaky hands. Claudia had beat you to the bar. She had a beer in hand and took one look at you before turning to the bartender,

“Get him a shot of gin if we have any.”

You honestly wanted to protest but the glass was set down before you.

“I find a bit of gin calms the nerves and steadies the hand,” she quoted.

Well your hands were definitely shaking less when to sat the glass down.

“Anyway, that was some real ballsy flying,” she kept talking, “Way more kills than I got anyway.”

You just let her talk and took another sip of gin. She was right in that you were collecting yourself a bit better. That was until Irina emerged from one of the doorways.

“Pecker. You missed the debriefing.”

Well you supposed it was a valid reason to be displeased with your conduct. Sergei came running in after her.

“Looks like she found you first,” he commented before pulling up a chair, “Some water.”

The bartender looked about as annoyed as Irina was. He poured a clear and transparent liquid for Sergei which smelled strongly of alcohol.

“Not going to join us?” he asked the Spacy liason.

“No thank you,” she declined frostily, “Please submit your reports as soon as possible.”

She left a folder at the counter before turning about face and leaving as swiftly as she entered. Sergei gave you a shrug and savoured the drink in his glass.

“Good job today,” he finally said, “It’s a shame you’re on the wage slave contract or you’d have scored big bucks. A shame about the Valkyrie though.”

“Oooh, did he blow it up?” Claudia piped up.

“Just crashed it,” Sergei was smiling that same smile of his again.

“So what about you?” you changed the topic, “How many kills did you get with my gun?”

“I dunno, I wasn’t counting, Cap used to so I don’t really,” she replied, “I’m loving your gun Pecker. It does exactly I want it to.”

“I bet it does,” you added needlessly.

“Still I wish it’d fire a bit faster, or at least have a better heat sink because it’s warping the barrel.”

Sergei may have coughed loudly once or twice.

“Been busy lately,” you made your excuse, “Maybe when I get around to it I’ll let you try it out again.”

“You’re the best Pecker,” she turned to Sergei, “You okay Pinto?”

Your squadron leader just waved her off amidst his hacking and wheezing.

“Pecker I gotta go,” Sergei got up still half-choking, “Don’t forget your homework.”

“Yes mom,” you grinned as he stumbled off.

“What’s with him?” she asked.

“He’s a lightweight,” you brushed it off.

You spent a few more hours chatting and drinking with Claudia until you were almost too drunk to stand. With a bit of effort you grabbed the documents before you left and stumbled back home. By the time you made it to your apartment, you just flopped down on the crouch and fell asleep. Thankfully, Sergei had deemed it fit to extend your ‘vacation’ a bit but a lot of things were going on the morning after.

With your mental faculties mostly returned, you recall the massive battle that had occurred around Island 1, the current island ship you were on. Surely there was going to be massive media coverage. On top of that, you totalled your ride and had some intel that Irina left behind for you. Might as well,

After having a quick shower and breakfast you sequestered yourself in your room. While you weren’t sure of the sensitivity of the files, you weren’t going to go spreading it around willy-nilly. The files had the bog-standard reports and information. It also included a confirmed kill count of you sniper rifle in a combat situation against the GAME. That was nice, seeing the evaluation move forward. What really drew your interest was the two massively underlined points. Simply put, even the greatest minds couldn’t comprehend the motives behind the increasing attacks.

The other concern was mostly practical. This was a new enemy for Spacy, and it was a now publicly acknowledged one. They needed new tactics to defeat the new enemy and while you’d like to say that it was easy there was a slight but subtle difference between when you first encountered them and the last engagement. Normally they preferred attacking in a straight line and while their frigates did, their fighters were adapting. They weren’t keeping up perfectly, but they were trying.
