Dinner is a tense affair, having to explain yourselves to a nonplussed Miya. Instead of the spooky demon mask you've come to expect, she polite. You felt a torrent of unrelenting violence seething beneath the surface of her pleasant smile. Like a spring under compression, waiting for release. Whoever did this, she would wipe them out with a fury not seen on this earth.

Sitting down with the other residents, including a pale, effeminate silver-haired young man whom you have not before seen. He introduces himself as Homura, and you introduce yourself. Well, as best as you can. He, or at least his hair reminds you of something you've seen before. You try to search deep within yourself for an answer but come up lacking. On the other hand, you aren't sure you'd like what you'd find. Miya's words echo in your head, hollow where memories ought to be.

At that moment, you hear a few chords of some metallic, rasping instrument and – is that a cowbell? Yashima's face flushes a bright red. She pulls out one of those funny “mobile phone” things and click-clacks a few buttons.

“I have a call from the director. Should I, um, take it?”

You'd rather not have another interruption, but maybe this “director” guy could give you some answers. However, if your understanding of these things is correct, she can call back whenever she wants

You smile and walk into the living room with Yashima. She presses one of the studs – Buttons, you correct yourself. On the tiny screen, there appears a man. His hair is long and unkempt and his eyes are framed by rectangular spectacles. His shoes and dress, including a long cloak, speak of great wealth.

“Hello I'm Minaka, CEO of the MBI corporation; and welcome to the Sekirei Plan: the game you will be participating in. The rules are simple; there are one-hundred eight freed Sekirei like the lovely Yashima and they will fight and fight until the last Ashikabi – that's you, bub – can ascend. It's a bit more difficult than it is simple, my friend, so good luck to you. My MBI corporation will be playing referee, so don't break the rules or the consequences will be unfortunate.”

White hot anger surges through your heart. Wizard. The word comes unbidden into your mind with a connotation as bitter as poison. You hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Everything assocciated with that word. Grandiosity, power unconstrained by morality, everything. You would love nothing more than to tear off his head.

Calm down. Calm down.

You quell your anger temporarily. It hurts to put down such a strong feeling like a rapid dog. You know it has something to do with who you were.

“Tell me,” you say to the man in the tiny, flickering screen, “What are the rules for this game?”

“As long as you have at least one Sekirei, you're still in. Also, it's off limits for Sekirei to target Ashikabi, except in self defence. We had to make a special exception for you, I'll have you know. Other than that, y'know, you're in. Will you take destiny by the horns?”

He laughs arrogantly.

“Now farewell, you strange one.”

The call ends, and you release your hand from the fist it had unconsciously formed. To your surprise, the armor had appeared over your arm. You didn't know it reacted like that. You know that you can bend the rules if you take strike first or go after the other Ashikabi. You feel that the rules would be bent right back against you.

You stalk outside with a scowl on your face. The burning anger is back, and this time you let it out. Your armored fist carves a crater in the yard as you punch it again and again until your skin is covered in a thin sheen of sweat.

“Kiddo, are you okay?”

“I'm not okay,” you growl, “I hate that man. It's dumb!”

You strike the ground again.

“It's irrational!”

The crater grows deeper.

“But I know in my heart that I hate that man. No sense of right and wrong.”

She pulls you away and hugs you tightly.

“I don't know what's wrong, but I want you to stop.”

That's enough. It's like pouring ice water onto a fire. So this is unconditional love.

“I just hate people like that,” you say, “People with power but no sense of right and wrong.”

A wizard. The thought goes still unvoiced.

“Let me tell you what I think,” she says, snuggling up against you.

“I don't necessarily want to fight, but I'm good at it. Shouldn't I do what I'm good at, what I'm made for? Without the Director and without the Plan, we'd be outsiders without purpose. Besides, if it's for you, I'd do it in a heartbeat.”

Maybe this is the inhuman part of her talking. It feels like there's some gap between your hearts that can't entirely be crossed. That's why you think you're human, even with everything else.

It then occurs to you that whoever threw the brick must have been watching. They don't like the display of your abilities, so it might be worthwhile to quickly scan your surroundings.

You break free of Yashima's hold, but her protests quiet when she sees something different on your face. You slam your fist into the ground, but instead send out feelers through the earth. Perhaps this can catch something. You look around, trying to catch any telltale flicker of movement.

Nothing. Damnit.

Wait. What's that? It's not a matter of feeling anything. If the world were a pitch black cave, and each person was a candle, this spark of life would be burning blue. That's not normal. In comparison, Yashima and other Sekirei burn gold. Here's something you can figure out. In comparison you burn purple. Blue and red? Or just something entirely different. It's rapidly fleeing, so you doubt you could catch this person.

Now what? You ponder this in the middle of the destruction you created in an otherwise serene and peaceful yard. You'll have to apologize later.

You return to dinner with Yashima, exhausted. The food is cold, and everyone but Miya has left. She generously gestures for the two of you to sit.

Miya is, in many ways, an exception

You take the next few days easy. You get around the city and start to learn its landmarks. You get a general sense of how to get around, though you've found yourself often get lost. There's a hope in the back of your head that something will jog your memory, but nothing does. Or at least nothing does like how seeing Minaka brought a hatred of “wizards” to the surface. You want to find out if they exist, or something else. You manage, with the combined fashion senses of Kazehana, Uzume, and Yashima, come up with a wardrobe of tasteful clothing. It took some experimentation to figure out what would work with the armor, but that's a story in and of itself

You spend time trying to figure out your armor. You haven't managed to figure out anything new, but you've managed to refine and better understand what you can do. For one, you seem to have a [High Speed Regeneration], except when it comes to burns of all things. You suppose that is the purpose of the armor, which is fire resistant. It's as if someone engineered it to cover your weaknesses. You have tried out your [Sensing]. At this point, you must be stationary to use it and it only reaches out in a radius of about five-hundred paces. You suspect there is room for improvement. You tried using the [Tendrils] for more than stationary vibration sensors, but you couldn't figure anything else out.

You spend a good deal of time with Yashima. Even light ribbing can send her into tears. She has a hard time getting used to your dry sense of humor. However, she's an ever-willing teacher to help you live in this strange land.

You love her. You are reminded of that in those small moments. Watching the sun set together on the porch. How she insists in giving you a chaste kiss before you go to bed. The extra spring in her step when you hold her hand when you go out.

It's one day, late at night when you are jogging. Running is almost meditative to you. You prefer solitude as you make your nightly three-mile trek. Running through the blue-lit streets is like running through an aquarium. However, you find darkness and pale, colored lights to be comfortingly familiar. A lingering feeling from your past life.

Something breaks you from this internal reverie. In a parking lot, you see two figures facing off as if to spar. You stop and open your mind to that foreign sense. Both are Sekirei.

“Look Pink, I've got a day job. I'm going home. I just want to live without dealing with this bullshit. I know that trigger-happy morons like you are always in need of a fight, but I'm not. Fuck off.”

“I hate that lazy attitude of yours,” says the other, Pinky, “This business is kill or be killed. Be glad I'm just here on a friendly visit.”

You crouch behind a parked car, and think about the right choice of action. You don't want to see anyone lose, but the fewer the better your odds are. At that moment, you hate yourself for thinking like the Lightning Twins. But it has a certain utilitarian practicality. You could just observe, but you could always intervene. You do want to the hero (even if you don't know why you can't just let Yashima fight your battles)

You peak over the car and watch the fighters. One, her blood red hair tied back into a ponytail, pushes up her glasses and kicks off her wedges. She brings up her hands in loose fists distant from her face. It's the sort of stance you'd see from someone familiar with bare-knuckle fighting. Her demeanor and stance contrasts with her professional attire.

“Fuck you, Pink.”

Her opponent, Pink sticks out her tongue. Pink wears one of those black robe-things (Miya told you the name but it escapes you now) and tight athletic shorts. She's already bounching on the balls of her feet.

“You're as much a Sekirei as me, Red. Besides, I know you. We've done this before; you can feel that sweet rush of adrenaline through your veins. Let's have some fun. Nobody is as technical a boxer as you.”

The Red Sekirei, twists her frown into a grin.

They clash.

Pink rushes in with a lightning kick. However, Red stays firm and simply sidesteps. That's all she needs for counter attack. She steps in for a quick hook into Pink's liver. You almost whistle at her skill, but are further amazed when Pink falls down and twists around into a sweep. Red steps back, hands high and forward, content to fight at her own pace.

Pink kips up onto her feet and snaps out a low roundhouse, swinging her leg like an axe to chop down Red at her base. Red brings her leg up to catch the kick and rolls her hips to dissipate the force that cracks the asphalt. She rushes back in with a number of jabs and cross punches, alternating between fists, palms, and spear hands depending on the target. She drives Pink back under this steady, stalking combination of blows. Pink moves in suddenly, takes a brutal hook to her sides, but catches Red in a clinch.

Knees slam into Red's stomach again and again. But there's somehow enough of an opening that Red can hug Pink, and then bend over her back to suplex Pink through a car roof. Glass shatters, and you can hear the wailing sound.

Red cracks her neck and frowns at how the frame of her glasses is now bent. Then she turns to leave.

Ashikibi have subconscious psychic powers which they use to link up with sekirei before they wing them, it helps the sekirei find their suitable ashikibi. the more winged sekirei they have, the stronger their psi power is, its power grows exponentially.

This is explicitly mentioned and explained in the manga as to justify several things
1. when a sekirei sees their ashikibi, they just "know" s/he is the one and the ashikibi feels a sense for them as well. A sekirei also has a general inclination of where to search and sometimes can even see visions of who their "chosen" ashikibi is (it is possible for another non chosen ashikibi to forcibly wing them if they catch them before hand, without any psychic bonds)
2. it allowed minato to see waking visions of kuu calling him to help her, (once he has winged enough sekirei to be powerful enough psychically)
3. it is what was causing homura to transform into a woman to suit minato's subconscious tastes when they linked psychically BEFORE homura was winged (well, part of it, the other part was homura's inherent unstable body. but when minato became aware of that and winged him they stabalized homura and stopped the transformation since minato didn't want to hurt him via forced genderbender)
4. various gut feelings people get about the state of their sekirei/ashikibi
5. the more sekirei someone has winged, the more sekirei that person becomes compatible with. That is, you could meet a sekirei and not be deemed their chosen ashikibi, but after you wing a couple more that same sekirei might suddenly feel you are her destined one and kiss you.

it is implied to have further psychological effects on all involved. And that it might be developed into doing more than just finding ashikibi/sekirei

You hear a groan from the wailing wreck of the car. A hand comes out, which Red uses to dislodge her friend/rival/enemy (you aren't sure) from the car.

“By the way, I'm Kyomoku, Moku for short.”

“Who is this, Moku?” groans the pink-haired Benitsubasa.

“I dunno, but the cops are coming; so we should leave. Say 'Goodbye' to the audience, Pink.”

“Goodbye,” says Benitsubasa, clearly not entirely here at the moment.

You wave and consider what do to do next. You could reveal yourself to follow them, but you almost feel like you would be betraying Yashima. On the other hand, you do want to know more and meet others Sekirei outside the contest of trying to kill them. You can hear the sirens in the distance, you need to pick something soon.

Those are fine arguments about how this specific case is not a plot hook. I could make some myself about how we "resolve it in an unexpected manner" but having this little chat with them and then leaving.

I like this system though. It lets more people feel involved in the rolling so long as the number of players remains reasonable, which is fine for a niche quest like this one.

You attempt to get out of the way, but you can only dodge so much mid air. The hand slaps you down and through a fire escape and into a dumpster Bracing for impact, you let the armor form to protect you, but the impact still smashes a few bones.

It's long enough to delay you from even being able to move out of the detritus. Your vision swims and you stagger about towards the man.

“Who the hell are you?” you growl as you start to rush.

He raises a hand and spectral chains tie you down. It takes every ounce of straining strength to stay on your feet.

“I'm here to have a chat before you get our kind involved in something we don't really want to get involved in.”

“Are you with the Director?”

“Absolutely not. Curse that man and every work he has wrought!”

You finally a get a good look at him. He looks European, with a trim ginger moustache and goatee. There are streaks of white in his hair, and lines of age in his hoary visage.

“We're going to talk, but not here. What's your name, son?”

You don't have one. “Kiddo” probably isn't appropriate here.

The old man pinches the bridge of his nose.

“You don't even know that? This will be a long night for you and me, both.”

He mutters something under his breath, and you feel yourself float upwards until you are supine in midair. He begins walking, and you are leisurely floated behind him

As you add more girls, it becomes harder for the writer to manage their personalities and keep them distinct. It's actually why I prefer the three that I do: you can give them strong characterization and not have any overlap. They also play well off of each other.

Of course Benitsubasa will see Kazehana's bounty as an affront to her femininity and be aggressive -- but can become self-conscious about her figure. Of course Kazehana will be sly and chiding while needling her -- but can be maudlin about her past.

Yashima is our center. She's not as polished or strong as the other two, but she also doesn't have their personality flaws. She'll feel inadequate at times, but that's one of the things that ashikabi are supposed to be there to help with.

But that's an off-the-cuff thing. What do I know?
