There are three kinds of enemies that all Khornates love to hate. The first is obvious: those daemons and being belonging to the Prince of Pleasure. The second? Sorcerers, psykers, and all others who would prefer to use tricks than fight fairly. Those two kinds of foes offer a physical form to rip and tear apart, unlike the third kind. Machine Spirits and AIs tend to provide very little in the way of a physical challenge, assuming any at all. Servitors and the myriad of other combat drones don’t have skulls to take, much less any blood to bathe in or drink. Fighting them is like fighting a target dummy: No glory to be had whatsoever.

That said, you’re left with little choice but to deal with the AI aboard The Obscenity Engine if you wish to claim it as your own. Already the virtual being has cut life support to the entire ship after noticing your presence (no thanks to Ignitrix, but you don’t blame her). If it’s already willing to go that far in trying to purge the ship of intruders, what else did it have in store? What will the AI’s destruction mean for the Engine? Will the Rak’gol be able to get in? Will Ignitrix be able to fly the ship? Will her feathers ever unruffle? What about the Hulk surrounding the Engine - will it be affected at all?

So many questions, so little time. It’s probably best you focus on the task ahead and worry about the “what ifs” for when you’re actually dealing with them. And that means concentrating on learning how to move in a vacuum for now.

Welcome to Khornette Quest.

If you’re a die-hard lover of canon, I suggest you turn away now. Like all things 40k, the gauntlet runs from “worshipping the printed word” to “over the top silliness.” Most of the time it’s somewhere in between. You’ve been warned in advance.

All rolls go against a specified characteristic in the style of Black Crusade. You’ll want to roll under the characteristic value in order to pass the check. The more degrees of success (every multiple of 10 counts as 1), the more awesome of a result. A 1 is a guaranteed success, and a 100 is a guaranteed failure.

Best of three rolls when it’s called for, with a 1 or a 100 instantly taking precedence. If multiple characteristics are being rolled for, each 1d100 counts for its respective test. Any rolls prior to the call for one and those not linking said post will be ignored.

You may burn (i.e. gone forever) 10 infamy to completely reroll a check (i.e. three new 1d100). If you have above 10 infamy, you are allowed a single additional 1d100 roll for any check during a session.

If you have any questions/etc, now’s the time.I’ll push the first update in about 10 minutes. I think we have a nice mix of skill checks, space combat, chatting, and headpats tonight.

Excessive meta/whining/waifu’ing/etc goes to QTG. Blatant Samefaggotry will be ignored.

The unfamiliar sensations of weightlessness and of pure vacuum presses against your mind and body. You’re able to easily ignore the latter, being a daemon, but the former is something you’re still getting used to. Even a twitch of your tail can send you into a dizzying spin as you find out rather quickly. Each movement has to be deliberate, to the point where you’re not entirely sure your usual melee preference will be at all effective here. Just getting from point A to point B in this small corridor is a challenge. Should you swing your claws too hard or miss a blow entirely in the middle of combat? You’d be useless.

<It’s a good thing you have us then, isn’t it?>

Ignitrix’s voice “appears” alongside your internal monologue, closely followed by a giggle from Acerea. You knew a psychic mindlink was the only way the three of you would be able to communicate with the lack of an atmosphere, but you didn’t expect them to be able to read your thoughts like that.

<You’ll get used to it dear~>

<Besides, it’s not like you’re hiding anything. Right, Cinder?>

<Nope. No secrets here,> you reply, barely resisting the urge to thought-growl in annoyance. As you drift lamely upside-down in the corridor, you feel a little envious that Ignitrix seems to have no issue moving about. The closest thing you have to compare her to is a Leviathan in a Blood Lake.

<Oh I’m far more graceful than that,> she teases while practically waltzing through the “air.” She must have had zero-G experience before between her days in the Inquisition and her time as a heretic. Acerea though? The plaguebearer looks a little more green than usual. She’s having just as much trouble as you.

1d100 vs 45

Succeed and you won't take a negative modifier for any agility checks in Zero-G environments. Future or otherwise.

Fail and Ignitrix will help. But you may not like the side effect that comes with it.

Somehow you’re able to get yourself over to one of the walls of the corridor. Once there you use your claws to dig into the metal and hold yourself in place. You’ll take this slow - a simple push so you end up floating over to the other side of the passageway. Acerea seems to have a similar idea, though she’s using the ceiling and the floor as her bounce points.

Not wanting to overdo it, you gently kick with your legs against the wall while removing your claws. As a result you’re sent toward the opposite wall at a reasonable pace. Not enough to be effective in combat but enough that you’re starting to get a bearing for how much force to use. You repeat this process several more times until you’re confident that you’ll at least be able to dodge if you have a surface to leap from. Thinking on it, you might be able to use your warp chains in a pinch if there’s something to latch onto. So far this corridor’s walls have been extremely smooth.

In the same amount of time, your green-skinned daemon friend has surpassed you. She’s figured out how best to use her acid balls in conjunction with ballerina-like movements to be able to dodge mid-flight. In fact, she’s now enjoying pushing herself along with little puffs of warp-energy.

You try not to be jealous while hoping Ignitrix doesn’t notice. But she does.

<You know, if you want to be a pretty dancer like us I could always give you a crash course via this link. You might not like the temporary side effect though…>

<No I’m fine. This will have to do for now. Besides it’s an AI. I don’t expect to have to kill twenty Grey Knights in the process.>

<Why would you go and say something like that? You know that’s a… never mind.> Ignitrix falls silent and crosses her arms. Even though you haven’t tried using the link to read her thoughts you still get snippets of her inner voice. <...she wouldn’t have liked headpats anyways…>

You guess that’s what the side effect was. All things considered not a bad one but you still rather not mess with Sorcery unless absolutely necessary. You had to remain somewhat Khornate, after all.

<So where do we go from here?> you ask, pointing to the left and right in turn.

The Tzeentchean visibly sighs and points to the left behind her. <It’s down this way, up a few elevator shafts, through what might be a drone bay, and then another few corridors.>

<A drone bay? Are we talking ground-based or flight/space-based?>

<I’m not sure to be honest. Had I not been an idiot before I might have gotten more information. Sorry.>

<It’s fine. Just try not to burn out the ENTIRE ship next time.>

You don’t need to read her mind to see your teasing’s effective. Though the feather poof isn’t as pronounced since half of them are still stuck out from before. <Hmph. Come on. Let’s get this day over with…>

And with that she takes off down the corridor. Acerea brings up the rear with you in the middle. It’s not long before you’re heading up the first elevator shaft, one of three. All seems quiet until your ears pick up the sound of something moving extremely quickly. Despite the lack of air for which sound to propagate. It’s more the grinding of metal on metal than a pocket of air being pushed around.

(cont)
>>
>>35573359

It takes you a moment, but you figure out what it might be. You’re in an elevator shaft. it stands to reason the AI is going to use that to its advantage.

The [2]s have it.

2d100, first for Per (35) and second for Ag (45).

If you succeed the first you have good timing. If you fail, your agility roll gains a negative modifier.

If you succeed the second you get onto the car without issue. If you fail... well you're a daemon so being hit by a wall won't kill you.

Closing your eyes, you pause your ascent and focus on the oncoming elevator car. It’s about twenty seconds away, below you, and traveling at a speed that would force any occupants to the ground. You relay this to your friends, along with a visual image of the three of you breaking inside and Ignitrix overwriting the controls.

<Another Cinder special… I guess it’s good that we’re not crawling through vents though.>

Ignitrix doesn’t sound pleased but now it’s too late to avoid the lift. The three of you push off of the wall and up the shaft so that you’re at about half the lift’s speed. As such, when it finally wooshes into view and hits you all, you’re not squashed or caught off guard. It still takes a few seconds to get your bearings and another couple past that for Acerea to burn her way through the emergency hatch on the top.

Your feathered friend dives into the car and begins fumbling with her data slate. You hear a series of curses in both low gothic and daemonic before the lift starts to slow.

<Oh thank Tzeentch. This system can be isolated from the main computer. This should make getting to the AI MUCH easier.>

Dropping in alongside Acerea, you tilt your head in confusion. <But it’s an elevator. It only goes up and down.>

<Ahahahaha no. It’s more than that. I read the schematics wrong before. ALL of the shafts are connected. Which means we can take an elevator to right outside the drone bay.>

Well that’s convenient.

<I know right?>

...Yeah that’s still a thing.

<The faster we’re there, the faster you can stop trying to force a headpat-positive mindset on me.>

<I am not doing anything remotely of the sort!>

<Uh huh. Back me up here Acerea.>

<Well they are kind of nice…>

<Not you too…>

<NOW who’s pouting?> Ignitrix giggles and then flicks up on her data slate. The lift kicks into motion with a whirring noise and you’re off. It takes perhaps ten minutes for it to come to a stop and the doors to open. The entire time the only indication that you changed direction was when you looked up through the hole in the roof.

<5th Floor: Drones, AI, and the Armory> rattles off Ignitrix. She’s the first out of the doors and into the corridor beyond. You follow close behind to see her working on getting a giant arch open.

<Uh… Iggy… what kind of drones do they hav…>

Your question is answered by the archway opening to reveal a massive shuttlebay. The left side has ten fightercraft of a make and model you can’t identify. They’re slick, black, and otherwise obsidian death. On the right side of the bay is a myriad of modified Glaives, or so you guess based on your limited knowledge of the Imperium.

In the middle though? About 10 combat servitors. All with chainguns. All aimed at you.

I see no point to not taking the re-roll here. Without it, we not only get wounds, but we also don't get to hit any of them. Thats kind of shit, and we get a re-roll every thread anyway.

Welcome to being a fucking Daemon that exists in a Dimension made out of Half-Formed dreams and rampant emotions.

Get fucking used to it, bar rampant stupidity or cracking your skull on a rock next to a blank, you are going to live for-fucking-ever.

There is a REASON Daemons, especially competent ones, are a BIG FUCKING DEAL.

>>

>If you don't want to succeed, how about not playing?
We can succeed by getting iggy to pull us out of the warp again, it's not hard.
>>
>>35574985
Might be a good idea to require using Iggy's skill or not to be decided before rolling, yeah.
>>
>>35575036

>>

But it is going to destroy our plans and all the work we've done here, death is not permanent, but it is a massive fucking setback.

And you want to throw away the Obscenity engine and all the work we've done just because "lol lets take some wounds" and not use a reroll or a skill which we get to use every thread.

>>
>>35575116
What's that really going to do though? Only mortal we're even interested in is silent, and Iggy could take him under her wing and get him daemon prince'd or something.

First of all he is a blank, and therefore can't get demon prince'd. Second, why would she bother?

We would have to start completly from scratch, not to mention we have no idea what the galaxy looks like then, might everything been overrun by Necrons by that point.

You barely have time to get out of the line of fire before all ten chainguns unleash a hailstorm of death through the archway. Acerea and Ignitrix respond with their respective Warp Barrages but the gunfire does not cease. Only when all of their guns run dry are you given a few seconds to act.

While they reload, you leap from cover and try to maneuver yourself to push off of the archway and at the servitors. Unfortunately, you misjudge your strength and thus you’re sent soaring past the machines. As you pass by them you try to use your claws but all this does is send you into a dizzying spiral. In all, by the time you impact the far wall behind them, six of them have turned with their reloaded chainguns.

If you thought the Rak’gol bursts were beestings, these are more like actual bullets. Because they are (-9 wounds). A lesser daemon would have been torn to shreds from that barrage. Good thing you’re Cinder.

It brings consequences appropriate to the thematics and goal of this quest. And it is a large steback, because it hurts us nin those areas we try to achieve in, battle fame. Yeah, in the overall grand scheme of things shut up Iggy, but for the quest? It's not going to go on for thousands of years, so it would be a massive setback, one we can't simply recover from within a thread or two like one anon said.
>>
>>35575576
I do understand that, it is a valid point, however I do not think ELH would simply have a time skip that massive if we died to a few bad rolls.

If anything, I would think that some of the items we're holding would most likely bring us back to life, in the very, VERY, unlikely chance we actually died.
>>
>>35575455
Depends on the writer, and the faction.
The Blood Pact flat out use 'special' sorcerers called Gore Mages, but that's acknowledged as unusual. For another example, the World Eaters executed all their Librarians when they turned traitor.
>>

Realizing you won’t survive another salvo, you eye the collection of Glaives to your left. If nothing else they’ll be good cover. But you’re hoping you’ll manage to get over and into one without being blasted out of the air. As such you purposefully put too much oopmh into your push, sending you hurtling towards one of the tanks at the fore.

You collide with the hatch but catch yourself before bouncing off. Wrenching it open, you dive inside just as a storm of bullets fills the air where you just were. Now that you’re inside the tank, you’re faced with a deactivated console. You have no idea how to use it, but you might know someone who does.

<Yeah, you do,> chirps Ignitrix. You sense her throwing a few fireballs before she continues. <Alright you see that button to your…>

She quickly leads you through the startup sequence. Soon a female voice fills the cabin along with a pressurized atmosphere.

“WELCOME TO THE HAV MAIN BATTLE TANK. MY NAME IS SHIELA, HOW CAN I BE OF ASSISTANCE TODAY?”

> [1] Ask the nice tank-lady to show you how to use those flammers you saw on the way in (Servitors roll dodge)

Which is why I'm wondering why we're discussing this at all, it's quite clear there's very little challenge in this quest, even doing things which would be absurdly suicidal haven't even killed us yet.

The way the dice is rolled, how powerful we're getting, I don't foresee us dying any time soon due to this. Even if we lose, Iggy can warp us out, even if we're outnumbered, we have our Nurgle girl, even if we're about to get psykered to death, we have Silent.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be rolling or anything else, but to worry about dying isn't exactly one of the major concerns in this quest.

The best way to think about it is the more wounds we take the less awesome we look. I'd have to go back and check but I think we get LESS infamy for being wounded than we would normally. It's not about whether we'll die or not (though I'm sure if we have to fend off Rak'gol after this we're fucked) but whether we're a good girl for Khorne.
>>
>>35575713
It's part of being a creature created from the immaterial essence of the warp, when our energy gets scrambled to high hell we need to reattach bit by bit. Also, chaos marines are born of the material world so they don't need to go through the same process demons do. All that's need for them is to repair the body and re-anchor the soul to it.
>>

Which also makes it a glaring target for every sector around it, their mother forge worlds, and every space marine chapter wanting to praise the emperor with their bolter.

No cannon. There's no kill like overkill, except for when you don't want to blow up the inside of your ship (and maybe your friends)
>>
>>35575837
Silent levels up his blank-field with willpower, for all we know he could be reading books on it every day.

There isn't a "losing condition" in this quest though, even if we fail in a battle, it's not as if Khorne will smite us with a hammer made out of Bloodthirsters.

I follow it more for the character interaction than the whole "winning the 40k" part, which is almost impossible on the personal scale we're on anyway.

<Hey at least this way you won’t blow a hole in…>

<Shut up Iggy, I need to talk to the tank.>

<Ask it if likes being interfaced wit…>

You throw up a mental wall to shut her up. “Yes. Hi Shiela. You’re going to do some killing in the name of Khorne. That going to be a problem?”

“I AM PROGRAMMED TO NOT CARE ABOUT MY TARGETS. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO RUN THE TUTORIAL?”

A smirk crosses your face. “Sure. But more to the point: I noticed you’re equipped with two sets of flamers. Can you focus on that?”

“CERTAINLY.” The current HUD showing you a view of the drone bay outside tinges red and begins displaying two bars on each side of the screen. In addition, an orange cone fades in to show the effective range and covered area of the flammers. “AS YOU CAN SEE, THE HUD…”

“I get it, thanks. What do I push to make it actually dispense glorious fire?”

One of the three joysticks in the cabin illuminates. Taking it in hand, you squeeze the trigger with glee. Fire erupts from both sides of the tank, catching all of the servitors in the destructive cone. Only two aren’t quick enough to dodge out of the way, the rest catch fire and begin reeling wildly.

<What the fu…> Ignitrix sounds impressed. Jealous that you made more fire than her, but impressed.

<You remember that Glaive from literally thirty seconds ago? Yeah. It has flammers.>

<I can see that…>

<Oh but I’m not done.>

<Wha->

“Hey, Shiela, which one of these controls the treads?” you ask, ignoring Ignitrix. The joystick to the far left of the first lights up. If you had to guess, the middle one is for the actual main turret. In any case, you’re able to get the Glaive rolling towards the scorched part of the drone bay.

By now six of the servitors have burnt to a crisp. Two are still trying to put themselves out while the two that dodged originally are leveling their chainguns at your tank. They pour lead into it but you remain safe inside. Even though this is your first time driving anything, you manage to run both of the bastards down and come to a spot amid the charred and still-burning-in-places deck.

<Soooo. This is Shiela. We’re keeping her.>

<That… that is a very nice…>

<Honey, you’re drooling.>

<I AM NOT!>

The two emerge from the corridor you came from looking slightly worse for the wear. Unlike you, though, their wounds are already healing. Something Shiela’s take note of.

“I AM ALSO PROGRAMMED TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. DISPENSING AID NOW.”

A panel opens up above you and drop a roll of silver tape onto your lap. You pick it up and stare at it for a moment, highly confused.

<Did it just… I love this tank.>

<Control your fangirl squeals Iggy and tell me what it is.>

<It’s duct tape. The Imperium used to, and still does, run on the stuff. It’ll be a perfect bandage for your wounds.>

If it weren’t for her genuine tone of excitement you might think she’s pulling one over on you.

>>35576660

You feel slightly silly taping up some of the more grievous bullet holes in your skin but you can’t argue with the results. Before turning off the tank and heading out to deal with the AI, you make sure to thank Shiela.

“YOU’RE WELCOME. HAV MAIN BATTLE TANK SHUTTING DOWN. THANK YOU, AND GOODBYE.”

With that, you pop the hatch and let yourself get sucked out along with the air. You end up floating in the middle of the bay as the other two daemons glide towards you.

<I… I’m claiming this bay as mine. Lazerus can’t have it.>

You raise an eyebrow at the flustered bird. <You really like old tech, don’t you?>

<Like doesn’t begin to describe. Even just the things in this bay are the equivalent of a pawn becoming a queen in the grand chess game. And just thinking about what secrets the computer core might have…>

As Acerea pointed out earlier, she is indeed drooling a little. It’s cute in a way and you’re slightly glad she’s in better spirits than when you first came aboard. Still…

<Speaking of which, how are we going to deal with the AI? Something tells me you can’t just wave your data slate and make it die or listen to you.>

Her shoulders slump and her wings droop. <That’s the tradeoff. Either I burn it out and most of the computer core with it, or you protect me while I attempt to rewrite its base code.>

<And how long will that take?>

<...six hours.>

Acerea and you gawk.

<What?! That’s as fast as I can go!>

<Are you sure we can’t try and possess it or convince it to work with us, sweetie?>

Ignitrix shakes her head at Acerea. <Possession might be an option if it wasn’t for the damned Warp field this thing has. But negotiating? You might as well tell a Grey Knight…>

Yeah I'm not even going to wait the 10 minutes for this vote. Pretty clear [1] has it.

So the way this will work is Ignitrix will have six Intelligence checks. If she succeeds, she wrestles away control of a system and nothing bad happens. If she fails, either you get attacked or she's set back an hour.

Let's get 3 out of the way just to speed things along.

You interrupt their back and forth with a cut of your hand. <Enough. We can easily last six hours. But I expect you to finish in five. Got that Ignitrix?>

She seems torn whether to complain or acquiesce. Finally she settles on, <Fine. But you owe me another headpat.>

<I see no problems with this.>

With that the three of you head down to the other door and onwards to the AI Core. It’s far less impressive than you were imagining: an oval room with a single monolith in the middle. On said monolith is a circular interface with a glowing “eye.” Said eye narrows the moment you enter the room, following Ignitrix as she moves about.

<Well… here I go. The only way in SHOULD be where we just came from but I could be wrong.>

The next three hours pass relatively uneventfully. Every 45 minutes or so Ignitrix giggles and announces she’s wrestled control of another system away from the AI. The first is life support, so you’re able to move and talk normally after an hour. The second is drone and shuttle bay control, so no real immediate benefit there. The last is external sensors, but this time Ignitrix doesn’t laugh.

“So I have good news and bad…”

“Bad. Always start with the bad.”

“Well in this case, I have to start with the good. I can pull the core out and fly us out manually after another hour or so. The problem with that is we lose control over one of two systems in the process. This annoying little ball… YES YOU… encrypted both the measures keeping the Rak’gol out and fire control. So either we let the Xenos in and have weapons or…”

You finish her sentence for her, “Or we don’t have weapons and end up getting shot on sight the moment we exit the Hulk by both the Rak’gol and the Blood Ravens.”

“Exactly. Oh and even better? The Hulk will hit the Black Hole in 90 minutes. These sensors are damned sure of it.”

(cont)
>>
>>35577696

Well then…

You could try piloting a fighter with drone support. That plus the Inferno and the Raptor should be enough. Then again purging Rak’gol is simple, assuming you don’t get too reckless. Either way, it’s decision time.

I will say this before you get too attached, not to discourage you though. Rak'gol are NOTORIOUS for not needing life support, or only need a bare minimum of it. As for the drones, you'd be limited to what servitors you can wrangle together yourself. The only reason they'd work for the pilot option is you'd slave them off of your own ship.

I should have clarified that better, sorry.

>>35577864
I was surprised at that too, we were managing fine. Gravity-wise, the mobility of zero-G helps a rip-and-tear bitch like us more than most of our foes, though I guess grounding the Rak'gol is good for slowing them down if they're liable to go through vents.

No, it simply draws out our perception of time to an infinite degree. From our perspective the rest of the universe is locked in a status field, as each second of time in the galaxy at large takes several million "years" from our perspective.

Oh, also, we'll be drawn out into an infinitely-thin line of not-matter over the course of this infinite time period, in process known in the scientific community as, I shit you not, "spaghettification."
