Something about Conrad's writing speaks true to you, even after so many centuries. The book predates modern notions of racism and bigotry, and so of course Marlow's constant referral to the Africans in his crew in terms of objects or machinery is jarring to your "modern sensibilities". But then again, how different were Marlow and Kurtz from the Federation you served? After all these years, has humanity advanced at ALL? Or is that notion an illusion, produced by the incongruity of a spacefaring civilization that still treats its own colonists like a source of revenue to be controlled and manipulated at will?

When you look back up you find that Carya is looking over at you with clear concern in her eyes.

"... you okay?" she asks nervously.

It takes you a moment to reply. "Fine. Just... reading. So why are you here?"

Carya shrugs back at you before rising to her feet. "Your mattress has a memory foam topper, so it's comfier."

You retrieve a small slate from the edge of the couch and sign into the Valkyrie's wireless network. Briefly checking your email as Carya shakes her head, apparently trying to wake Catrina up, you sign into your email and scroll down through the most recent messages. Internal memos... unimportant. Lost and found notice from Catharine... you wouldn't even wear that on shore leave, so it's clearly not yours. A message from your father regarding the tartan skirts... interesting. You shoot back a quick reply that they've gone over well, and continue on. Finally, a message just now from Audrey, asking you to head down to the hangar deck when you have a free moment.

“Sounds interesting,” Catrina lies as she peeks over your shoulder. “You want some coffee?”

The bittersweet smell of delicious caffeine tempts your nostrils. “Oh god, yes.”

Your attention then turns towards Titans. A few reports you can find reveal that Riddick is pretty pissed about being used as part of an elaborate coup by a Principality officer... figures he would be, but then again you kinda figure he's been asking for it. A few protests have been put down in recent days regarding an increase in the tariff rates on colony-to-colony exports: thankfully, the Titans responders showed some restraint. The only case where violence was used involved birdlime instead of bullets... damn that stuff looks sticky. There's also an errant file which mentions that adult candidates are being recruited for cyber-Newtype surgery... along with numerous warnings about the potential side effects and complications. Unsurprisingly, the Murasame lab has had few takers.

After taking a sip at her cup and passing you your own, Catrina steps out into the hallway, still in her undergarments. “I'll get dressed,” she tells you. “Catch you later.”

Finally you reach the end of the spinning hab cylinder and kick off into the freefall, catching a railing at the far end of the room and easing your momentum down into the hallway that runs to the hangar.

“Do me a favor,” you tell ALICE, “and see how much you can dig up on the Murasame lab's new program. I'll get back to you a bit later.”

The rusty-haired 'idol' snaps off a little salute (with the wrong hand, you note) before disappearing into... wherever it is she goes when she's not talking to you.

“Commander!” Audrey calls. “Over here!”

You drift your way over to Audrey, where she's standing with Emary and the Doctor, and take a long sip of coffee.

“You're all up early,” you comment casually, nodding to Emary. The poor girl looks exhausted for some reason, like she's been working all night. Which you figure probably isn't far from the truth.”

“I was thinking we could all have a little chat,” the Doctor tells you with a grin.

“About?”

One of his eyebrows lifts ever so slightly. “Weapons.”

“I'm all ears.”

“Well,” Audrey begins, “what do you want to discuss first? We've got some ideas for modifications to our remote weapons and psycommus, and we've discussed a few options for our second team's machines with Emma. You'll have to approve those.”

“In addition to moving the beam sabers to the shoulders, we plan to add small missile launchers to their shields,” Audrey explains. “Eight missiles each to round out their weapons loadout... plus they've got Gundarium-gamma in them, so they'll be able to stand their own in a fight.”

“We also wanted to add some weapons to our subflight systems,” Emary adds as she rubs her eyes. “One beam gun is kinda pathetic. We were thinking missiles.”

“Maybe a really big gun?” you ask hopefully. “Turn it into mobile artillery?”

The Doctor shakes his head. “No, I'm afraid we considered that. It would cut into the fuel storage and weigh the whole package down. Interferes with their carrying abilities.”

“Plus,” Audrey adds, looking around the hangar. “Where'd we put them? The Val Varo's already downstairs.”

"We'll think about other upgrades to the base jabbers after we get the Barzams settled," Emary promises.

More than one of you? That's actually a remarkably scary notion. Since you're not keen to show your feelings on that matter just yet, you ask for details on the other options.

“Miss Purpleton came up with an idea when you asked her to consider means of defeating a “Slattern” upgrade,” the Doctor continues. “Her plan would be to boost the output of a Newtype's brainwaves and transmit them across all frequencies a remote weapon might be operating on. Essentially, it'd let you hijack them mid-battle.”

Again... kind of terrifying. You press once more for the third option, reasoning that it's either sane... or a 'mystery box'.

Turns out it's the latter.

Oh, this is a hard decision. Psycho-Jammer is awesome but only in certain situations. NITRO would be amazing, but is too close to Cyber-Newtype research for me to be comfortable with working on it while still with the Titans. We don't want them to steal our work. Didn't it also lead to increased aggression in the pilot? So I'm going to go with the Psychoframe. Because it is awesome, has no major issues, and I fear that we may need an Axis Shock at some point.

"The alternative," the Doctor concludes, "is to focus on new types of remote weapons, to increase your options in combat."

"Haman and Rosse came up with a few designs," Audrey tells you. "Reflectors, hide bomb dispensers, magnetic mines, beam blades. Rossweisse even came up with something wild with I-fields she called a 'Fin Funnel'."

"Tough to engineer and calibrate," Emary adds, "but damned impressive if they work. They may even be able to form a shield from M-particles between three or more of them."

Today is June 19th: it's been a week since Colonel Voight came to power in the Garden of Thorns, and the mood has shifted in your tight circle of companions for the better. You haven't had that conversation with Audrey just yet, but she seems to have increased her efforts yet again. Her abilities with the new Iris have noticeably improved, making you wonder just how much her skills will grow from here.

Similarly the Sisters seem to have calmed after seeing Voight again, and are spending time coaching Rossweisse with their units' funnels. She seems to be improving, and can now handle a funnel in addition to her usual piloting duties: and two more if she focuses solely on it.

This morning, Karen sent out a message calling a noon meeting. Your team file in a few at a time, grabbing whatever space is available in the ready room in preparation for whatever Karen has planned.

Finally she shows up, and immediately asks ALICE to project an image up on the wall.

"Yesterday, the Gable team encountered Zeon suits in the shoal zone and engaged," she explains. ALICE helpfully overlays the coordinates of the encounter on a spatial map of the area.

"They're waiting on backup to push into a large field of colony debris, hoping that we may have found the Garden of Thorns itself."

Carya whistles, and Emma and Audrey both sit up a bit straighter. "That's a hell of an opportunity if it's true," Emma adds.

"Titans is treating it like a serious possibility," Karen explains. "We're to assist the Gable team in their push int the field until we can verify the target."

Reiko frowns, anticipating your first question. "Total forces unknown."

Also, is anyone else finding it ironic that in this timeline, Haman found love with an Irishman? The whole room scrambles into action. Emma's team makes a beeline for the hangar while your own team takes a moment to grab their helmets: you weren't anticipating things to kick off this soon.

Emary waves you towards your machines: the Viola/Sericea and Lilium/Iris are fully loaded and ready to go. A new pair of racks for your funnels are full, waiting on your wing binders to be unleashed. Your twin hyper rifles are in position, as is Audrey's combination rifle.

“We've really got to find a name for your rifle now,” you muse aloud as you and Audrey head for your separate cockpits.

“The Char Blaster?” Audrey suggests. “Or we could make a dick joke if that's more your speed.”

“Except Dominic's dick is serious business,” Haman counters as she tucks herself between your knees and you close the hatch. The hangar suddenly surrounds you as the panoramic monitor initializes. “Char's, on the other hand, who knows? He's got to be hiding something.”

“Sounds good,” Karen agrees. “Second Team, you'll be visual-only for the runup. Emma, acknowledge your visual systems are 100%.”

“Affirmative,” Emma replies. “Sergeants, confirm visual systems.”

First out the gate are Second Team's Mark II and Barzams, which race towards the battlefield ahead. Next come the sleds carrying your Liliums. Haman punches up your stealth system while Carya does the same, and you split up a bit to give maximum coverage. As you close with the Gable team, Emma makes contact.

“Report! What've you got?” she asks.

The gruff voice on the other end is male, a bit older than Jerid and very, VERY angry. “There's only EIGHT of the rodents, but we've lost two Nemos.”

“Say again,” Emma replies. “You said there were eight?”

The stranger swears loudly. “Their damned wires and winches... they're just toying with us! I feel so... VIOLATED...”

“Shit,” Emma mutters, separating from her base jabber. “Thanks for the warning, we're closing in thirty seconds.”

Meanwhile, you and the rest of First Team scan the debris around you for any sign of traps or reinforcements... this would go quicker if you separated, but it would leave you more vulnerable and spread out. You may not be able to respond as quickly if you actually found something out here amidst the wrecked colonies and burnt-out hulls.

You briefly entertain the notion of splitting up, before quickly discarding it. Then, a sudden stroke of inspiration:

Audrey pauses for a second before firing off a laser comm to the Sisters and Rosse. “Dom's made a good point: if there are reinforcements somewhere they'll be within visual range of the fight, but in an area of high M-particle interference to hide themselves.”

“Roger,” Carya replies as they close in with you. “We've got a likely spot, let's sneak up on it.”

As the battle with Gable's team and Emma's team continues at a frustrating pace, you and Carya loop up and over a chunk of steel and glass before your respective Bomber pilots fire the magnetic wires, pulling you into position to observe. Sure enough, your sensors paint targets in a section of highrise building drifting about five hundred meters out and slightly below you: your zoom optics confirm three mobile suits. Your machines' hands disjoint slightly to fire small wires to each other, enabling a contact link.

“This was a trap,” Carrina realizes aloud. “Those aren't your average machines. He wanted to get us in one place, weaken us, and wipe us out with a surprise assault.”

Rossweisse hisses quietly. “They failed.”

Haman, however, seems more concerned. “Those two machines are modified Gelgoog J-types... but the third one seems like a heavily upgraded Gyan. And it's got the command horn of the three, meaning it's the leadership element... that's not right.”

“Why would a melee machine be the lead element?” Audrey asks aloud. “It'd limit their holdoff options, wouldn't it?”

Your team acknowledges the order, and waits... and waits... and waits. Rosse and Audrey draw their ranged weapons, and Audrey preps a subarm to draw a beam saber if need be.

Finally, as things sound like they're turning against the Zeon machines and they run out of wires... or else Yazan Gable's started demolishing their cover, one or the other, the trio of high-end machines makes their move, and gives your team an opening.

The massive shoulder thrusters grafted to each accelerates them madly towards the fray... no kidding, they were "upgraded".

"That's fast," Carrina remarks, well familiarized with the Gelgoog J's famous speed. "Even for a J-type, ESPECIALLY for a Gyan."

Funnels are, what, the size of a sedan. Circle 'below' their visual plane, behind the building they were sheltering in, sneak the sedans up behind them, and shoot them. Unless we were dead-center of their sight line, they'd have a 50/50 chance of seeing the exhaust flares as the funnels detached. Plus, they weren't Newtypes so they had no chance of dodging short of shitty roll or hand of god intervention.

That's not how it works. The M-particle saturation is high enough to jam sensors and comms but not to disrupt beams. You have to get a lot more intense than that. Beam weapons will work fine. Especially beam weapons as strong as ours.

Your twin hyper rifles fire on the fast-moving trio of suits, causing them to split apart as your shot destroys a chunk of debris well behind them. Their sensors are still out of commission due to a combination of M-particle saturation and your stealth systems, so it takes them a moment to spot your team.

Audrey's shot buries itself in the leg of a Gelgoog, and Rossweisse's grenade hits on the skirts of the second: those shots should have ended in limbs being blown off, at the very least. But the Gelgoogs turn and open up with their beam machine guns, forcing both your Lilium teams to evade, weaving in and out of the drifting tangles of steel and concrete. The debris takes the brunt of the damage, though one of the relatively anemic beams singes Carrina's shield.

In response Haman deploys her funnels, sending them racing towards the enemy machines, darting from side to side as head vulcan rounds lance out into the darkness to intercept them. Carrina sends out four funnels of her own, and sends a burst of beam fire downrange that crosses over the modded Gyan.

At this range, your optics show you the results as the beams burn away a thin layer of ablative coating on the Gyan's torso and shield.

"Shit," Carrina cries. "Ablative coatings!"

"Forget that," Rossweisse replies worriedly.

Audrey seems to agree. "Those machines... how can they be using Gundarium!?"
