Today is June 12th, UC 0084. You are Dominic O'Hara, a Commander in the Titans anti-terror organization and squadron leader for the mobile weapon forces aboard the SCV-82 Valkyrie, and you've just found yourself suddenly roused by a sharp pain in your side. Looking about you realize quickly that you've rolled out of bed and fallen to the floor... specifically, the floor in your own quarters. Which is strange, given that the last you remember you had just shut your eyes for a moment over in Carya and Catrina's quarters, while sitting at their bedside.

Rising slowly to your feet and shaking your head to clear it, you see that the sisters are resting, serene and apparently quite comfortable, in your bed.

You recall clearly yesterday's excitement: first you ended a siege against some insurgents who'd stolen a few GM models and taken an office building hostage, then you learned that Titans had been used to help pull off a coup by the new leader of the Principality remnants, Colonel Voight. He's man who plays at “honor” while using ruthless and underhanded methods to gain more power for himself and his faction, and who considers the whole current generation of humanity to be forfeit after the Zabis lost their war. So far, it seems he may prove to be a bigger pain in your ass than Delaz was.

>>
>>35589581
You also recall Carrina threatening to make him 'dance like a finger puppet' for his role in the events that led to Catrina's death in the Flanagan Newtype labs, after which she seemed to collapse from some kind of emotional burnout.

With a heavy sigh you rub your stiff neck and stare at the clock on your nightstand: it's just after 06:00 hours. Plenty of time to get something done, or to just sleep some more.

>Go back to sleep, you're tired.

Grab some coffee. Then lets see what we can find about that Voight guy.

We're probably going to be assigned on chasing him, so we might as well get an early start.
>>
>>35589622
You decide to flip open the small, red-backed copy of Heart of Darkness that Rosse gave to you as a gift. No doubt she sensed your dissatisfaction at how much of your youth felt 'wasted' to you, either through your own antics or to the war, and picked out a couple of books that you would have been assigned to read had the war not interfered. Catch 22, Catcher in the Rye, Heart of Darkness, Hamlet, Our Town... all in pocket-sized hardback, to better fit in your limited quarters.

Something about Conrad's writing speaks true to you, even after so many centuries. The book predates modern notions of racism and bigotry, and so of course Marlow's constant referral to the Africans in his crew in terms of objects or machinery is jarring to your "modern sensibilities". But then again, how different were Marlow and Kurtz from the Federation you served? After all these years, has humanity advanced at ALL? Or is that notion an illusion, produced by the incongruity of a spacefaring civilization that still treats its own colonists like a source of revenue to be controlled and manipulated at will?

When you look back up you find that Carya is looking over at you with clear concern in her eyes.

"... you okay?" she asks nervously.

It takes you a moment to reply. "Fine. Just... reading. So why are you here?"

Carya shrugs back at you before rising to her feet. "Your mattress has a memory foam topper, so it's comfier."

She then walks across the room in her underwear to set up your coffee machine. The time on the digital clock at its base reads 07:45.

It was a couple hours ago, right? He could have left the cluster in the meantime.

Maybe we can check if the Titans spotted him leaving. If so, we could at least get some clue on where's he heading or where his forces are currently hiding. If not, then there's a chance he's still around the cluster.

Anyway, we definitively need to check out from where the transmission came from.
>>
>>35590145
The time delay from the Earth to the moon is only 1.28 seconds, and bouncing a laser signal off a series of satellites would largely circumvent Minovsky interference.

He was a good distance away, I just didn't see the point in including a time delay that would be barely noticeable.

“Officer thinking there,” you comment idly as Carya returns to flop down beside you on your small couch.

You retrieve a small slate from the edge of the couch and sign into the Valkyrie's wireless network. Briefly checking your email as Carya shakes her head, apparently trying to wake Catrina up, you sign into your email and scroll down through the most recent messages. Internal memos... unimportant. Lost and found notice from Catharine... you wouldn't even wear that on shore leave, so it's clearly not yours. A message from your father regarding the tartan skirts... interesting. You shoot back a quick reply that they've gone over well, and continue on. Finally, a message just now from Audrey, asking you to head down to the hangar deck when you have a free moment.

“Sounds interesting,” Catrina lies as she peeks over your shoulder. “You want some coffee?”

The bittersweet smell of delicious caffeine tempts your nostrils. “Oh god, yes.”

Your attention then turns towards Titans. A few reports you can find reveal that Riddick is pretty pissed about being used as part of an elaborate coup by a Principality officer... figures he would be, but then again you kinda figure he's been asking for it. A few protests have been put down in recent days regarding an increase in the tariff rates on colony-to-colony exports: thankfully, the Titans responders showed some restraint. The only case where violence was used involved birdlime instead of bullets... damn that stuff looks sticky. There's also an errant file which mentions that adult candidates are being recruited for cyber-Newtype surgery... along with numerous warnings about the potential side effects and complications. Unsurprisingly, the Murasame lab has had few takers.

After taking a sip at her cup and passing you your own, Catrina steps out into the hallway, still in her undergarments. “I'll get dressed,” she tells you. “Catch you later.”

“... there better not be any cackling going on down there...” you mutter darkly.

“ALICE?”

The AI appears on your tablet's screen. “Yes, Commander?”

“Walk with me.”

You step out into the hallway and pass your team's rooms: Haman and Rosse are of eating breakfast, and Carya is apparently showering. Audrey, predictably, isn't in her room. Finally you reach the end of the spinning hab cylinder and kick off into the freefall, catching a railing at the far end of the room and easing your momentum down into the hallway that runs to the hangar.

“Do me a favor,” you tell ALICE, “and see how much you can dig up on the Murasame lab's new program. I'll get back to you a bit later.”

The rusty-haired 'idol' snaps off a little salute (with the wrong hand, you note) before disappearing into... wherever it is she goes when she's not talking to you.

“Commander!” Audrey calls. “Over here!”

You drift your way over to Audrey, where she's standing with Emary and the Doctor, and take a long sip of coffee.

“You're all up early,” you comment casually, nodding to Emary. The poor girl looks exhausted for some reason, like she's been working all night. Which you figure probably isn't far from the truth.”

“I was thinking we could all have a little chat,” the Doctor tells you with a grin.

“About?”

One of his eyebrows lifts ever so slightly. “Weapons.”

“I'm all ears.”

“Well,” Audrey begins, “what do you want to discuss first? We've got some ideas for modifications to our remote weapons and psycommus, and we've discussed a few options for our second team's machines with Emma. You'll have to approve those.”

>>
>>35591404
Honestly, I don't even know why people make things up about Australian wildlife, the real stuff is so much worse. Maybe they're actually trying to make us feel better by hiding the horrible truth?
>>
>>35591226
I'm trying to think of some possible upgrades for a base jabber and besides making them psycommu controlled and serve as mobile weapon platforms, I'm drawing a blank.

Maybe make them capable of switching what they carry? They could carry around a couple of MS (the current version), serve as a mobile weapon platform (replace the part that the suits are standing on with guns) or as a supply/repairs unit.
>>

>>
>>35591148
“Alright,” you reply. “Let's start with that. What've we got?”

“The Mark Two, and a pair of Quels,” Emary lists. “The Quels are pretty underwhelming, so we're scheduled to pick up two refined-type Barzams in the next few days.”

“Good,” you muse. “And not Hizacks... they really screwed the pooch by refusing to use Gundarium.”

“Indeed,” the Doctor agrees, his strange glasses doing nothing to hide the tug of a smile at his cheeks. “Those will come with a beam gun each, but we think we can do better.”

“In addition to moving the beam sabers to the shoulders, we plan to add small missile launchers to their shields,” Audrey explains. “Eight missiles each to round out their weapons loadout... plus they've got Gundarium-gamma in them, so they'll be able to stand their own in a fight.”

“We also wanted to add some weapons to our subflight systems,” Emary adds as she rubs her eyes. “One beam gun is kinda pathetic. We were thinking missiles.”

“Maybe a really big gun?” you ask hopefully. “Turn it into mobile artillery?”

The Doctor shakes his head. “No, I'm afraid we considered that. It would cut into the fuel storage and weigh the whole package down. Interferes with their carrying abilities.”

“Plus,” Audrey adds, looking around the hangar. “Where'd we put them? The Val Varo's already downstairs.”

"We'll think about other upgrades to the base jabbers after we get the Barzams settled," Emary promises.

"As for the Mark II," the Doctor continues, "Miss Sheen seems set on the shoulder-mounted beam sabers, and seems to want to add a few missile launchers to the hips."

"Both sound passable," you agree. "Anything more exciting?"

"We're trying to mount an I-Field to it," Emary tells you, "but the architecture just isn't there to support it, I'm afraid. We'd have to re-design some area of it extensively."

"She settled on beam cannons added to the shield boosters," Audrey finishes.

You shift your weight a little at the mention of the seemingly-cursed boosters: one nearly ended up jammed into the side of a cruiser last time you tested them.

"Don't worry," Audrey reassures you. "We've strengthened the mountings. They're solid Gundarium now."

Add mounting points for Funnels similar to the Slattern package on the Lilium line. Even if the pilot cannot use them, it still brings more beams to the battle for a Newtype in a proper psychommu to control and field.

Add an additional external propellant tank to increase it range and strengthen the wrist and hands with additional Gundarium encase someone gets punch happy.

You know, we could put Haman down in the legs of our suit and stick Audrey in another unit. Use the Lilium as a delivery vehicle for funnels while having the Schnee Weiss psychommu control them. It'd free up the incredibly target rich environment our suit is. Three pilots? Really?

And now I'm wondering how this Mark II would perform with a waverider now.
>>
>>35592189
Yeah. It was Digivolved into the Ikabanana.
>>
>>35592143
Good idea.

Also, speaking of funnels, we could maybe convert a Base Jabber into a funnel delivery vehicle.
>>
>>35591870
I thought we were making the Rebawwo?
>>
>>35592143
We could do that, but then we'd have to drop the sub-arms. Coordinating them and the funnels at the same time isn't really viable. Though I would like to give the other pilots more to do. Maybe add some reflector I-Fields so the Ikebana Bomber's beam guns can be aimed and fired while combined. Or have Haman handle the sensors while the funnels aren't viable so she can give us early warning information. Stuff like that.
>>
>>35591719
“Sounds like you've got the whole matter sorted,” you admit. “Send a copy of your plans to me and Karen and I'll make sure it all gets signed off on. But what was that about the psycommus?”

Audrey grins. “Well, we've been figuring out a few things, and Nina's been working on some designs. The first thing would be to work on what's called a “bio-sensor”: basically it communicates data back into the pilot's mind. Or... 'pilots”, in our case.”

“That sounds kind of risky,” you admit.

“It could be difficult, yes,” Audrey admits. “But once we're at that point, there are three more options. The first is feeding back battle data from a Newtype, which could enhance a Newtype's skills or allow a non-Newtype to fight more like... well, like you, Dom. We've been calling it the NITRO system. It stands for some bullshit that really isn't important anyway, but it sounds cool.”

More than one of you? That's actually a remarkably scary notion. Since you're not keen to show your feelings on that matter just yet, you ask for details on the other options.

“Miss Purpleton came up with an idea when you asked her to consider means of defeating a “Slattern” upgrade,” the Doctor continues. “Her plan would be to boost the output of a Newtype's brainwaves and transmit them across all frequencies a remote weapon might be operating on. Essentially, it'd let you hijack them mid-battle.”

Again... kind of terrifying. You press once more for the third option, reasoning that it's either sane... or a 'mystery box'.

Turns out it's the latter.
(1/2)
>>
I just realized we have REFINED Barzams. Not the goofy looking Barzam. Someone pulled some serious strings for us to get those out of Pezun. Not a whole lot were produced.
>>
>>35592305
“The third option is called a psychoframe. It's a psycommu build right into the frame of a mobile suit, at an extremely fine scale. We honestly have no idea what it could be capable of,” Audrey admits.

And that scares you too: if Audrey doesn't know what something does, it's some pretty serious voodoo. “So what are the short-term payoffs to each?” you ask.

“Well,” Emary replies thoughtfully. “The Jammer would have little immediate benefit aside from easing the operation of existing systems. Once the bio-sensor is completed all the NITRO system needs is calibration, so it'd come online quickest. The psychoframe project would allow increasing ease of control over the systems and make it easier to run more complicated weapons, or a greater number of simple weapons.”

“Sad that we lack the manpower to do all three at once,” the Doctor sighs wistfully.

Alternate reality, anon. The Barzam design was pretty quickly shelved in favor of the Refined type, largely because the original was deemed supar after your field reports on the performance of the GM Quel.

Quite a few of the less successful designs are going to be phased out rather quicker than they were in canon.
>>
>>35592362
Delegate research out to people we trust. We handle one while Nina and company handle the other two. Spread the juicy research out to prevent one party from having everything and to prevent it all from falling into enemy hands encase someone goes traitor. NITRO would be amazing, but is too close to Cyber-Newtype research for me to be comfortable with working on it while still with the Titans. We don't want them to steal our work. Didn't it also lead to increased aggression in the pilot? So I'm going to go with the Psychoframe. Because it is awesome, has no major issues, and I fear that we may need an Axis Shock at some point.

The Jammer sounds like a tame, 2spooky EXAM.

The NITRO is a Move-By-Wire system for the mind

And the psychoframe is self explanatory.

For now, go for the one that will have the greatest payoff for us. Which would be bio-sensor. It has the biggest impact for all of us, boosting our already frightening potential while also bringing our oldtypes up-to-par.

The jammer is awesome, but so far we haven't ran into that many enemy newtypes that used funnels. The NiTRO is also great, but it just screams bad shit happening to the oldtype using it.

So lets focus on this thing, so we can improve our funnels and other bit weapons.

Oh, no doubt. But we've got funnels of our own, and with a separate pilot just for them we should be able to dominate any funnel duels we get into. It would be bad if we ran into something like the MP Qubeley squad, but we're several years from the Ple clones being developed enough to pilot.

"Bio-sensor, then the Psychoframe," you tell them. "Seems like a good balance of end results and short-term gains."

Audrey nods. "Figured you couldn't resist the mystery box."

"So what next? Remote weapons?"

The good Doctor smiles. "Why, I think I hear my name being called. What we have is a matter of power or utility."

You ask him what he means. "Well, it's quite simple: we can increase the size of the remote weapons so that they can either function as heavier support, or as funnel carriers."

Audrey quickly catches your attention. "We could use the base jabbers, or even some old Mobile Balls as bases to carry weapons."

Something about the mental image of a Ball covered in guns and missile pods strikes you as hilarious. But Audrey has a point: back in the war, the little fuckers had quite a bit of zip to them.

"The alternative," the Doctor concludes, "is to focus on new types of remote weapons, to increase your options in combat."

"Haman and Rosse came up with a few designs," Audrey tells you. "Reflectors, hide bomb dispensers, magnetic mines, beam blades. Rossweisse even came up with something wild with I-fields she called a 'Fin Funnel'."

"Tough to engineer and calibrate," Emary adds, "but damned impressive if they work. They may even be able to form a shield from M-particles between three or more of them."

Modular funnels with the power and endurance of a Fin Funnel backing it. We would not be capable of carrying as many, but the payoff of versatility would be worth it.

Similar to the exchangeable backpack system. Replace the funnel's head with a beam rifle attachment or a beam shield that morphs into a sabre. The possibilities are endless with plasma.

A quote strikes you: something you heard back in high school that stayed with you all this time. “Water can flow or it can crash,” you declare. “Be water, Audrey.”

“Soooo... utility?” she asks, looking at you quizzically.

You smile. “I want all of the tricks, ladies and gentleman. All of the tricks. More tricks than I have room for in my sleeves.”

The Doctor's grin is positively manic by this point as he claps you on the shoulder. “I knew there was a reason I stuck around this ship. I'll even work on bigger sleeves for you!”

Like a man twenty years his junior, the Doctor springs off towards his work, dragging Emary along behind him.

Audrey, however, hangs back. You notice her hand gripping the hem of her plaid skirt: like the Dress Gordon your father is so fond of, but lacking a yellow band. It's truly your team's own pattern, and your officers seem fond of them. But the skirt isn't what Audrey is concerned about... you can tell that much.

“Well, you'd best get going then!” she tells you a bit too loudly. She's really not very good at hiding things, is she?

“Audrey,” you intone. “You know something's up, and you know that I know something's up. So why hide it? If it's something I can help with I'd be happy to.”

Your copilot shifts her weight nervously. “Well... you know how the Murasame lab is looking for volunteers to undergo cyber-Newtype surgery?”

“Yeah,” you reply. “What... no.”

Suddenly it dawns on you where this is going, and you're not sure if you dislike it, or if you truly, deeply despise it.

“I'd be able to take the strain off you all a bit,” Audrey explains. “And I'm sure I'd be more useful in combat, too. It's a way for me to keep up with you all. So I've been... you know. Considering it.”

Potentially severe side effects.

Audrey nods resolutely. “There's no place I'd rather be than here. CERTAINLY not in a second-rate unit filled with war criminals in the making."

"Then here's what you need to consider: you'd be subjecting yourself to god-knows-what at the hands of an organization that we all KNOW doesn't give a damn. They'd as soon find a way to hold you hostage or turn you against us as help you become a Newtype."

"True..." she mutters. "But..."

You interrupt her: you're not having a discussion about this. "Besides, I like you just the way you are, and the team NEEDS you the way you are. You're the only one of our first team who doesn't feel the same things we do in battle, and if someone finds a way to attack Newtypes, we'd be relying entirely on you to pull us through. You may be different, but different is GOOD, Audrey."

"You really mean that?" she asks quietly. "I mean about liking me how I am, and thinking I'm good enough how I am?"

Put it this way, The Scientists who run the CyberNewType project probably don't want to see the 'fruits of their labour' die off due to lack of subjects, so they will be likely to kidnap people to continue their research... Today is June 19th: it's been a week since Colonel Voight came to power in the Garden of Thorns, and the mood has shifted in your tight circle of companions for the better. You haven't had that conversation with Audrey just yet, but she seems to have increased her efforts yet again. Her abilities with the new Iris have noticeably improved, making you wonder just how much her skills will grow from here.

Similarly the Sisters seem to have calmed after seeing Voight again, and are spending time coaching Rossweisse with their units' funnels. She seems to be improving, and can now handle a funnel in addition to her usual piloting duties: and two more if she focuses solely on it.

This morning, Karen sent out a message calling a noon meeting. Your team file in a few at a time, grabbing whatever space is available in the ready room in preparation for whatever Karen has planned.

Finally she shows up, and immediately asks ALICE to project an image up on the wall.

"Yesterday, the Gable team encountered Zeon suits in the shoal zone and engaged," she explains. ALICE helpfully overlays the coordinates of the encounter on a spatial map of the area.

"They're waiting on backup to push into a large field of colony debris, hoping that we may have found the Garden of Thorns itself."

Carya whistles, and Emma and Audrey both sit up a bit straighter. "That's a hell of an opportunity if it's true," Emma adds.

"Titans is treating it like a serious possibility," Karen explains. "We're to assist the Gable team in their push int the field until we can verify the target."

Reiko frowns, anticipating your first question. "Total forces unknown."

"Composition unknown," Catharine adds. Figures...
>It's gotta be a trap, why are we going again?
>We could launch an alpha strike: full commitment
>We could have Second Team support Gable while First takes overwatch: we'll respond if things go south

"The Ikebananas should scout the area. With the amount of debris floating around in there, our Gundams would be perfect for reconnaissance. A couple more leaking Minovsky fusion reactors wouldn't even give them pause with our stealth system active."

They have three Mark IIs. What they may have done to them, you don't know.

There is also a second ship in the area, with three brand-new Nemo mobile suits. Slight improvements on the GM series there.

Scout it out, confirm if it's really the Garden of Thorns, then ask Riddick to point the shiny, weaponized mirror at it.

If it's never that simple (I'm resigned to the fact that it is the likely case), then...

"We could try replacing the explosives in some psyco-mines with sensors and using them to scout, plus testing out our new Minovsky interference negator thing."

I'd bet real money Delaz scrubbed his computers and detonated thermite on the ones he wasn't able to scrub.
>>
>>35595768
Negative on that. Delaz rightfully never trusted her, and anticipated data security issues.

If Cima knew where the Garden of Thorns was, she would have gone there in force and either wiped it out of existence or died in the attempt.
>>
>>35595745
We have three ships at our disposal? Oh cool. Triangulation shenanigans could work then if the Minovsky interference isn't substantial. Have ALICE sync our suits Gundams Minovsky Radar System up amongst the tactical ship networks and we'd have a good chance of uncovering any ambushes before they were sprung.
>>
>>35595866

It's the site of one of the biggest, bloodiest battles in the history of humanity, and still plays host to ships and mobile suits, as well as a faction that deliberately SPREADS M particles to hide themselves.

"So I'm guessing our new sensors are gonna be useless in there?" Catrina asks.

Audrey nods. "That's right. M-particle density should still at well above typical combat levels through the whole region. We'll be sensor-blind in there past three kilometers or so."

"Still," you add, "it's a great opportunity to abuse our stealth systems. Second Team can link up with the Gable team, and our Liliums can run overwatch. We'll stick close and run our stealth systems at half output."

Karen smiles. "Hey... not bad, Dom! We'll keep the Val Varo ready with Pazom in the cockpit, and shadow you a few clicks out."

"You're trusting Ilia?" Haman asks uncertainly.

Karen shakes her head. "Not really. She'll be weapons-off unless we need her. Mostly we'll have her running sims while you're gone."

"Trust'll come when she earns it," Karen adds.

"So it sounds like a plan," Roberto concludes. "Lieutenant Sheen, Sergeant Bay and I will take our machines out first, and the Grim Guard will look out for us."

"The Grim Guard?" you ask Karen in confusion.

Reiko shrugs. "Rossweisse suggested it to me, so that's the name I gave Titans when they asked. I think it'd be cool, 'cause then you could say 'gee gee, motherfucker!' to people when you beat them."

Also, is anyone else finding it ironic that in this timeline, Haman found love with an Irishman? If the team ever wound up traveling between dimensions (like, say, if they wound up in SD Gundam Wars), she'd wind up feeling so bad about her alternate's actions. Well, she'd feel bad about what canon Haman does for a lot of reasons, but you get my point.

“I think it's fine,” you say, ruffling Rosse's hair a bit. “Stern, but clearly benevolent. It'll strike fear in the hearts of our enemies and bring hope to those we protect... hopefully.”

Rosse merely smiles and enjoys the headpat for a moment, before you're rudely interrupted by a crisis.

“Captain,” you hear Noel's voice over the intercom. “We've got trouble already. The Gable team is reporting they've engaged!”

The whole room scrambles into action. Emma's team makes a beeline for the hangar while your own team takes a moment to grab their helmets: you weren't anticipating things to kick off this soon.

Emary waves you towards your machines: the Viola/Sericea and Lilium/Iris are fully loaded and ready to go. A new pair of racks for your funnels are full, waiting on your wing binders to be unleashed. Your twin hyper rifles are in position, as is Audrey's combination rifle.

“We've really got to find a name for your rifle now,” you muse aloud as you and Audrey head for your separate cockpits.

“The Char Blaster?” Audrey suggests. “Or we could make a dick joke if that's more your speed.”

“Except Dominic's dick is serious business,” Haman counters as she tucks herself between your knees and you close the hatch. The hangar suddenly surrounds you as the panoramic monitor initializes. “Char's, on the other hand, who knows? He's got to be hiding something.”

“Alright,” you tell Karen over an open channel. “We may be a bit premature, but let's stick to the plan. Sortie with the sleds, and the Valkyrie can come in under our stealth shrouds. We'll run them at full until we're in the AO, then cut back to half.”

“Sounds good,” Karen agrees. “Second Team, you'll be visual-only for the runup. Emma, acknowledge your visual systems are 100%.”

“Affirmative,” Emma replies. “Sergeants, confirm visual systems.”

“Nominal.”

“We're good.”

First out the gate are Second Team's Mark II and Barzams, which race towards the battlefield ahead. Next come the sleds carrying your Liliums. Haman punches up your stealth system while Carya does the same, and you split up a bit to give maximum coverage. As you close with the Gable team, Emma makes contact.

“Report! What've you got?” she asks.

The gruff voice on the other end is male, a bit older than Jerid and very, VERY angry. “There's only EIGHT of the rodents, but we've lost two Nemos.”

“Say again,” Emma replies. “You said there were eight?”

The stranger swears loudly. “Their damned wires and winches... they're just toying with us! I feel so... VIOLATED...”

“Shit,” Emma mutters, separating from her base jabber. “Thanks for the warning, we're closing in thirty seconds.”

Meanwhile, you and the rest of First Team scan the debris around you for any sign of traps or reinforcements... this would go quicker if you separated, but it would leave you more vulnerable and spread out. You may not be able to respond as quickly if you actually found something out here amidst the wrecked colonies and burnt-out hulls.

You briefly entertain the notion of splitting up, before quickly discarding it. Then, a sudden stroke of inspiration:

“Hey, Audrey?”

“What is it?”

“Where's the M-particle count highest in the vicinity?”

Audrey pauses for a second before firing off a laser comm to the Sisters and Rosse. “Dom's made a good point: if there are reinforcements somewhere they'll be within visual range of the fight, but in an area of high M-particle interference to hide themselves.”

“Roger,” Carya replies as they close in with you. “We've got a likely spot, let's sneak up on it.”

As the battle with Gable's team and Emma's team continues at a frustrating pace, you and Carya loop up and over a chunk of steel and glass before your respective Bomber pilots fire the magnetic wires, pulling you into position to observe. Sure enough, your sensors paint targets in a section of highrise building drifting about five hundred meters out and slightly below you: your zoom optics confirm three mobile suits. Your machines' hands disjoint slightly to fire small wires to each other, enabling a contact link.

“This was a trap,” Carrina realizes aloud. “Those aren't your average machines. He wanted to get us in one place, weaken us, and wipe us out with a surprise assault.”

Rossweisse hisses quietly. “They failed.”

Haman, however, seems more concerned. “Those two machines are modified Gelgoog J-types... but the third one seems like a heavily upgraded Gyan. And it's got the command horn of the three, meaning it's the leadership element... that's not right.”

“Why would a melee machine be the lead element?” Audrey asks aloud. “It'd limit their holdoff options, wouldn't it?”

"Hold off," you order. "We'll wait for them to commit, then light 'em up."

Your team acknowledges the order, and waits... and waits... and waits. Rosse and Audrey draw their ranged weapons, and Audrey preps a subarm to draw a beam saber if need be.

Finally, as things sound like they're turning against the Zeon machines and they run out of wires... or else Yazan Gable's started demolishing their cover, one or the other, the trio of high-end machines makes their move, and gives your team an opening.

The massive shoulder thrusters grafted to each accelerates them madly towards the fray... no kidding, they were "upgraded".

"That's fast," Carrina remarks, well familiarized with the Gelgoog J's famous speed. "Even for a J-type, ESPECIALLY for a Gyan."

Of course, my argument is completely moot, I now realize, as the entire area is saturated in Minovsky particles, so the beams would be ineffectual to hilariously pitiful in power.

Oh hey, all of these people wanting to use the Hyper Rifles. Nobody thought of that did they.
>>
>>35598990
That's not how it works. The M-particle saturation is high enough to jam sensors and comms but not to disrupt beams. You have to get a lot more intense than that. Beam weapons will work fine. Especially beam weapons as strong as ours.
>>
>>35598886
Your twin hyper rifles fire on the fast-moving trio of suits, causing them to split apart as your shot destroys a chunk of debris well behind them. Their sensors are still out of commission due to a combination of M-particle saturation and your stealth systems, so it takes them a moment to spot your team.

Audrey's shot buries itself in the leg of a Gelgoog, and Rossweisse's grenade hits on the skirts of the second: those shots should have ended in limbs being blown off, at the very least. But the Gelgoogs turn and open up with their beam machine guns, forcing both your Lilium teams to evade, weaving in and out of the drifting tangles of steel and concrete. The debris takes the brunt of the damage, though one of the relatively anemic beams singes Carrina's shield.

In response Haman deploys her funnels, sending them racing towards the enemy machines, darting from side to side as head vulcan rounds lance out into the darkness to intercept them. Carrina sends out four funnels of her own, and sends a burst of beam fire downrange that crosses over the modded Gyan.

At this range, your optics show you the results as the beams burn away a thin layer of ablative coating on the Gyan's torso and shield.

"Shit," Carrina cries. "Ablative coatings!"

"Forget that," Rossweisse replies worriedly.

Audrey seems to agree. "Those machines... how can they be using Gundarium!?"
