Today is June 13th, UC 0084. You are Dominic O'Hara, a Commander in the Titans anti-terror organization and squadron leader of the “Grim Guard”, stationed aboard the SCV-82 Valkyrie. And you really, REALLY need to work on remembering to lock your door.

You wake this morning to a squealing cry of “DOOOOOMIIIINIIIIIIC!!!!”, and a loud thump as twenty kilograms of upset five-year-old impacts your stomach.

“URGHUUUURFFFF!!!” you manage as all the wind is knocked out of you, but if Mineva noticed how bad that hurt she's not in the mood to acknowledge it.

“How could you forget to see me I was so worried I was waiting for you to get back but I fell asleep and you let me sleep and how could you do that!?” the orange-haired princess simply spills out words until she starts to run out of breath, her green eyes glistening with tears.

A bit of air floods back into your lungs, allowing you to manage a few words. “Thought you could... use the rest? Knee... in kidney...”

Mineva looks down at her knees and quickly scrambles off of you, muttering a quiet apology as she bumps into Audrey, who's also been woken by the commotion.

“What's she doing here?” Mineva asks, again having apparently forgotten what she was angry about.

Audrey smiles at the little princess. “Making up for lost time, Lady Mineva. I had my own business to take care of with the Commander.”

“What business were you doing in bed?”

You and Audrey exchange amused glances. “You'll find out about it when you're older,” you explain.

Mineva pauses, looking up and frowning as she thinks hard to herself. “I was supposed to tell you something...”

If ALICE continues building its countermeasures against the satellite network Voight hijacked, the chances of the AI uncovering info regarding the Box may be a possibility I now realize. ALICE may accidently stumble across Syam Vist's bolthole. Furthermore, ALICE may not be the only AI out there. Developing proper AI warfare countermeasures with our personal pop-idol murderbot is going to be essential.

In addition, Newtype training for Audrey. Assist her in expanding her senses and powers so she doesn't awaken early and ruin her potential. Mental exercises with the psychommu and further bonding with Dominic. We bring out the potential in fellow Newtypes we give the D too. I'm still running off the theory we're a tuning fork and a psychic amplifier for other Newtypes we Social Link with.

“You were supposed to tell him I wanted to see him,” you hear Karen's strong, almost husky voice explain. Rolling over, you see your red-haired Captain standing in your doorway.

Mineva smacks her head lightly. “Sorry, Captain! I forgot!”

“That's okay. Dominic, we got back the spectroscopic results from Audrey's heat wires.”

Audrey sits up, pulling the sheets up with her to provide a little modesty. “The sample I took? What'd we learn that's so important you'd come here yourself?”

“Why're you naked?” Mineva asks, confused.

Karen raises her eyebrow and motions for Mineva to come over to her. The Zabi princess obeys, and Karen lifts her into her arms. “It's Gundarium gamma,” your Captain informs you. “Now we've got even more reason to visit Anaheim.”

Well, someone's going to have to deal with that somehow, and it's probably gonna end up being you.

Nina is not there. She's only loosely affiliated with Anaheim proper anymore since moving out to the Woomera range, and certainly not enough to be in on their business dealings.

I'm surprised Titans have not gifted themselves another brilliant engineer at gunpoint. Nicely, of course.
>>

They basically have. She's flat out told you there are probably Titans plants on base, which was why there was some concern at upgrading your machines there.
>>
>>35731461
>ALICE may not be the only AI out there
Well, Zeon is under new management now, so they'll probably get even more unorthodox with their tech. So it's possible.

And AE/Vist might be involved in it too, meaning they could get the Zeeks to field-test some of their weirder technology.
Like a giant artificial brain piloting a mobile armor based on Amuro, I dunno.
>>
>>35731748
Why have we not funded a Bladewood freighter or looked into building her a secret base to lord over?

Evil Genius here we come. We can even hire her disposable mooks and build the first ground-to-space particle cannon in her extinct volcano.
>>
>>35731792
Amuro in a mobile armor isn't that threatening. He works his magic best in mobile suits that have good maneuvering and flexibility.

“So I'm thinking we find out what they really know,” you tell Karen. “We know it's Anaheim, but their whole company is designed to cover things like this up. If we can find out what branch did it, our position's stronger.”

Audrey nods thoughtfully. “He's got a point, Captain. If we jump the gun on the La Vie en Rose, it could tip off the CEO.”

“Okay,” Karen agrees, seemingly exasperated at having to take the issue slowly. “I'll have ALICE do some peeking at their records while we're docked. You want to do any interviews?”

“Interviews?” Audrey asks. “You mean interrogations? But we don't need any new crewmembers right now, and that's how interrogating people seems to end.”

Karen shakes her head at the joke. “Seriously, we could pull aside a few people and ask them quietly. Maybe Miss Audevie, or someone.”

"We can question Lucette subtly under the guise of a friendly catchup between her and Defrah."
"Audrey, your concern is noted, But we Could do with a Base or Station of our own... and we'd need to have staff and technicians who know what they're doing and we trust...."

I assume that recruiting the entire La Vie en Rose is out of the question...

Pretty soon ground-to-space particle beam cannons will be functional. PLASMA. Not lasers. So yes, essentially. A bigger, scarier Jormungandr that has the atmosphere and a properly sized Indian Ocean heatsink.

>Of course. We don't have blaster bombs researched nor psionic amps. SOON THOUGH.
We have blaster bombs. That's basically what the psychomines are. As for psionic amps...well, we have primitive ones. Audrey's working on a better version. I can't wait until we have a biosensor. Though I'm not sure if it's good or bad that we don't have any ghosts to fuel it. I mean, on the one hand it's nice that no one we love has died. On the other hand, how are we going to waverider crash? I guess we could use Gato, maybe, but that's just one guy we don't particularly care about.
>>
>>35732207
He used a colony laser, not a rail cannon.

Personally im waiting for the newtype event horizon.

We know that new types induce other new types, so if we keep accumulating them there is going to be a point were dormant people are woken up by coming into contact with us.
>>
>>35732236
Yeah, but the blaster bombs are controlled by a gigantic, dragon-dildo psychic booster. Until everyone can wield omnidirectional football launchers, we can't exterminate the brain-in-a-jar on turn 1.

Plus, we have Dominic as our psionic amp. Although, if he bites it, then that means everyone enters eternal suffering.
>>
>>35732354
So we don't bite it. Or when we do we make sure it's out of love. That way our echo is a sort of bitter sweet.
>>
>>35732301
Oh god, we were around both Kamille and Banagher. What is that going to do to their Newtype awakening?
>>
>>35731886
"Defrah was close with Lucette," you point out.

Karen frowns, a trace of sadness obvious in her eyes. "You really think she'd turn on her friend?"

"If her friend is involved in something like what we think is happening," Audrey counters, "she should be worried about her. I know I would be."

"We can have Reiko and Catharine pull some records and find me a target," you conclude, "in case Defrah objects."

"Sounds fine," Karen agrees. "I'll give the orders."

With that, she turns and leaves while a confused Mineva waves awkwardly at you over her shoulder. The Zeon princess probably didn't quite catch all of what was going on, but you know Defrah's not going to like what you have to say.

After dressing and telling Audrey you'll see her later, you head up to the bridge to find Defrah Kar. Your helm officer is sitting at her post, looking rather bored and fiddling with the prosthetic leg poking out from under her skirt. She's wearing pantyhose, but the contours of the false limb make it obvious what she's trying to hide.

"Ah, Commander!" Defrah greets you. "What's up, man? Why do you look so somber? Oh, I get it, you're gonna ask me out on a date! Such a serious face for a serious occasion!"

You can tell she's teasing you, which makes it even harder to break it to her that one of her best friends may be guilty of aiding and facilitating terrorists.

"I need to talk to you, Defrah. In private."

You carefully lead Defrah aside, and scratch your head thoughtfully. “Defrah, how often did Anaheim's shipments get raided by pirates?”

The brown pilot shrugs at you noncommittally. “Never. If they had I'd have been sent after them, but AE gets the best escort service from the EFSF.” Ah, that makes sense. They've got a close relationship with the Federation forces, after all, so improved shipment security probably comes with the deal.

“The mobile suits we were fighting yesterday... we tested a chunk of armor we pulled off of the heat wires. It was Gundarium gamma. The only people who make it work for Anaheim.”

Defrah stares at you in the dawning realization of what you mean, and why you're telling her this out of all your crew. “You think Lucette was involved? No way. There's just no WAY!”

Her voice is getting loud enough that it's attracted the attention of Noel and Miyu at their stations, and you struggle to get her to keep her voice down. “Lucette'd never do something like that!”

“You know how Anaheim works, Defrah,” you remind her quietly. “Lucette may not have had a choice. We still have no idea who may have been involved, but Lucette's the first person we could ask. She may know something, and may be able to help us put a stop to this.”

Defrah shakes her head. “I can't do it, Dom. She fought hard to get me hired there! For nearly three whole years she was my ONLY friend! She's a good woman! I KNOW her!"

Sorry. I meant to link 35732828
>>
>>35732939
Maybe? Depends on what type you want. Do you want a miniaturized Minovsky Craft system to give mobile suits atmospheric flight? Because that's doable, Audrey managed to make one in canon, after all. It's still pretty huge, and makes the mobile suit in question look silly as hell, but the Daedalus unit will be available soon. If you mean the Minovsky thruster system like the Mother Vangurad or Victory 2 use, than probably not. We could make them, probably, but current reactors don't have nearly the power output to use them.
>>
>>35732828
Canon UC is the slow erosion of the earth sphere under a flurry of colony drops and nukes. Take a look at the fleet jumbers During the OYW, Gryps, ZZ and CCA. The EFF threw nearly 400 ships into the meatgrinder to stop Zeon in the one week battle. They couldn't manage 10 to stop char

You feel your shoulders droop a little at the prospect, but you know you need to press your friend on this. So you look Defrah right in her brown eyes, and tell her the truth. “And that's why I'm asking you for this. Because on the off chance she IS involved, she'd need our help, Defrah. And if that's the case, you're the one who can convince her.”

With a sigh, Defrah shuts her eyes, her mind racing to figure out how to handle the situation. Finally, after several long seconds, she gives you her response, choking out her words. “You have to promise me: even if she cooperated, don't give her over to Titans. Protect her, I don't care how.”

“You HAVE to promise me if I'm gonna help.”

You nod. “You have my word, Defrah. If it comes down to it, I'll make certain she's safe. After all, look at our crew and passengers: what difference is one more secret from Titans gonna make?”

Defrah seems overjoyed at your promise, throwing her arms around you in a bone-shattering bear hug. “Thanks, Dominic! Really, thank you! It's good to know I can still count on you.”

You shrug, casually returning the hug. “Count on me to not be an asshole, yeah. Big deal.”

She doesn't release you.

“Just let me know after we get there, and we'll talk to her.”

June 19th, UC 0084. After several busy days on the La Vie en Rose, Anaheim is making good progress on the repairs to your mobile suits. The damaged beam coating has been stripped and new coats of paint are going on, and the shoulders of both machines are being replaced. The new parts jut anteriorly and posteriorly rather than laterally , with large housings for new equipment. Audrey and Emary are overseeing the modifications, and now that Lucette has finished with Emma's team's machines you find an opportunity.

You and Defrah corner Lucette one evening after dinner.

Defrah looks nervously at you, wondering how you'll lead this off.

Actually, since the gravity on the Nice Boat is going to be based on paramagnetic fields rather than centripetal acceleration, we could orient the gravity in the room however we want. So we could cover the walls in beds and still be able to have gravity.

Have we spent any time with or talking to Emma beyond missions at all?

"We need to talk and you're not going to like it. Pour yourself more wine as this is going to be a doozy."

Then go into detail about how the Zeon suits had Gundarium Gamma.

"What do you think? Could the Zekes have developed it on their own or did someone leak it internally? You're our best lead right now, Lucette."
>>
>>35733584
Diamagnetic. The magnetized sections of the ship will need to be unidirectional, likely in line with how the ship would be oriented in atmo, and heavily shielded from any sensitive areas using something like Permalloy or Mu Metal. And you'd have to have regulations about the metal allowed into those sections.
>>
>>35733606
Then we pay them a visit?

Probably. We just haven't had a reason to do so on-screen.

Suppose we players should check on her, Apolly and Roberto at some point, though.
>>
>>35733673

Let's just stick the captain's quarters in micro gravity or if we have in a section with gravity have a big enough bed so that everyone that Dom is with can sleep with him. Back when it was just three they all ended up in the same bed at one time at least once.

>>
>>35733673
I could have sworn it was paramagnetic, but I'm looking it up and that sort of magnetic manipulation of living organisms is indeed diamagnetic. I guess I got confused. What's paramagnetic levitation used for, then? Liquified gasses, I think?

"We haven't had much time to talk yet," you begin, trying to prompt Defrah into talking as you escort the two ladies out of the hall and into a small meeting room for privacy.

Defrah forces an awkward laugh. "Yeah, I've been gone so long I'm surprised you recognized me!"

"Of course I recognized you," Lucette insists, somehow missing the tone of the situation entirely. "You're still the best friend I ever had on this station, so I miss the hell out of you. All that time we worked together on projects we'll never be allowed to tell our kids about..."

Defrah shoots you a pained expression, but you merely nod back in Lucette's direction.

"Actually," Defrah laughs, "I was thinking of asking you a favor. Could you maybe whip me up a Gundarium leg for the next time I've gotta kick some butt? I feel practically naked without some of that good stuff between me and the other guy!"

Lucette smiles at her old friend. "Now Defrah, you know it'd be a misuse of my authority. One that I'd be totally fine with if we could get our hands on some Gundarium gamma. Can't manage to get enough of the stuff in stock to be useful."

You raise an eyebrow at her. "The Zeeks found a way."

There's a long silence as the smile on Lucette's face slowly fades. She takes a moment to realize what she's just heard: it was the sound of the jig officially being up.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about, Mister O'Hara..."

You can tell she's lying... the real question is, why?

Lucette's heart begins to beat faster, and you notice her starting to sweat a little. Her skin flushes as she panics, her mind a whirl as she oscillates between breaking into a run and breaking down in tears.

"It's okay, Lucette," Defrah tries to tell her, only to be interrupted.

"It's NOT OKAY!" Lucette shouts, taking you both by surprise. "We couldn't say no, and we can't tell Titans! They'd kill us all, they're already doing no-knocks all over the Sides and kidnapping people and you never hear back... oh God no, you didn't tell them already did you? WE CAN'T STAY HERE!"

Defrah rises to her feet to stop Lucette from running out the door. The blonde struggles with her for a moment before crashing to the floor, hyperventilating and shaking with a palpable panic that hurts your head.

Oh great. She's having a full-blown panic attack.

"Shhh," Defrah tries to reassure her friend as you rest a firm hand on Lucette's shoulder. "We haven't told anyone. You're okay, you can trust us. I'm your best friend, remember? I just want to help you."

The calm words from her friend seem to have an immediate effect on Lucette, as her breathing begins to smooth out. You rub the technician's back, having no real idea what else to do, which seems to sooth her a little further.

"I already promised Defrah I'd keep you safe, Lucette," you tell her. "I swore it, and you've seen me work. Do you really thing I'd break an oath to my friend?"

Lucette shakes her head silently.

"Good," you add. "Now, we need you to calm down, Lucette. Can you do that for us?"

She nods after a moment. You can feel her trying to keep her emotions in check, but it takes a minute or two longer for you to sense that she's in any position to answer questions.

>What do you want to ask her? Keep in mind, she may not have all the answers.

>What materiel did they demand?

These seem like the most important questions to ask, and ones Lucette would probably know the answers to.
>>
>>35734633
>Why couldn't you say no?
>Wait, the other Titans are doing what?

These seem like the things we most need to know.
>>
>>35734633

>>
>>35734633
"Yeah, I should have known breaking this would have been easier with more alcohol in all of us. Defrah, could you get us some more? We're all gonna need it."

"Alright, Lucette. What do you know and what can you tell us? And if this has a chance to bite you on the ass, there's always more bunks for stowaways on the Valkyrie."
>>
Well with the whole kidnapping thing happening I think that Dom might just desert soon.
>>
>>35734714
This.
>>
>>35734633

First, we get her onto our ship, possibly under the guise of discussing new suit modifications, then we set her up in a room and get her to lay out what she knows.
This is probably not the best place to ask questions...

though a list of things we should ask include;
Why couldn't they refuse.
What kind of things were being sent.
How often did things get sent.
Who was the contact/where was the drop off.

and others I can't think of now...
>>
>>35734774
Not before insuring everyone's family is safely secured on the Valkyrie first. Remember, the Titans can and will use any means to blackmail someone. Especially if that someone is a Newtype.
>>
>>35734774
Maybe we can get Char to get off his ass and get his contacts in the new Republic to save those people somehow?
>>
Stop. Time out. Abort. Do Titans or Zekes have eyes on the room? If Anaheim is compromised then I know I'd plant some bugs to keep an eye on things. Let's make sure we're having this conversation abord the Valkyrie. Use the sauna/hot tub as an excuse.
>>
>>35734816
>>35734774
we are probably gonna be introduced to Blex and the AEUG soon, possibly trough Char
>>
>>35734847
That'd actually be a great excuse to use to get her onboard temporarily.

"Hey, have you SEEN our hot spring?"
>>
>>35734888
It plays to Dom's reputation as well. "Of course he's taking a woman on board his ship to look at his hotspring. He's got a fully stocked bar in there and his bedroom is in the next hallway." It's a more comfortable than "Why is that shifty Newtype getting that researcher to come aboard his ship that we haven't been able to get a single bug on?!"
>>
>>35734888
>>35734847
the poor sods watching/listening to us just shake their heads like:
another one, how does he do it?
>>
In case we can't get Lucette to board the Valkyrie, could we get her to be transferred to Nina's team? They're relatively Titan-free.
>>
>>35734967
We are going to be the best father to the worst kids.
>>
>>35734946
I suspect they do still have a bug or two, because that’s less suspicious.

It’s just that Alice subverted the bugs so that all they ever hear are ordinary conversation and occasional grumbling about the issues Riddick and company already know we have with them.
>>
>>35734633
"Is this room safe?" you ask first. Lucette nods.

"We check for bugs every few days. Company policy." That's... actually kind of a fucked up company policy to have, but you suppose it makes sense for a company as twisted as Anaheim.

"Okay then. When you're ready, start at the top."

After several long minutes of nothing but the sound of Lucette's slowly normalizing breathing, she finally starts. "Well, you already know Anaheim's business model. We're compartmentalized."

Defrah nods in agreement. "Yeah, we know. We never knew what the other parts of the company were doing."

"Well, I think it's that way because our CEO really did intend for there to be profiteering," Lucette replies. "And for the first time, it was our cell that did it."

You frown. "Do you know who called that shot? IF we knew who it was we might be able to guess at their reasoning."

"It has to be someone higher than Miss Clehna," Lucette explains. "She didn't seem to like it, but she told me she had no choice: that someone would force the issue with us if we tried to resist. I don't now who the enforcer would have been, either."

As Defrah gives her friend a hug, you get the feeling this has about run its course. Lucette just knows what she's been told, but what she's shared with you confirmed your suspicions.

"Or we could just tell Clehna she's coming with us," Defrah observes. "We're Titans. We disappear people, apparently."

If they are supplying material to the Garden of thorns, then stuff from here must eventually make its way to the garden of thorns, however circuitous the route. Scary thought. What if the more women we bone the stronger of a Newtype we become? Our strength as a Newtype is determined by the number of women we've had coitus with. It seems the more Newtypes we collect, the faster our harem, crew, and pilot collection snowballs.

>>
>>35736064
After making arrangements with Lucette, you let her go for the time being. Defrah goes with you after thanking you profusely, and the two women disappear.

June 20th, UC0084. La Vie en Rose, the colossal, spindly-armed repair facility owned by Anaheim Electronics, actually does remind you a little of its namesake. While the large ring of independently movable solar panels resemble the petals of a golden “flower” in space with docking arms and servos at the center, the proverbial stink of this place has started to register with you.

In one of the booths of the station's galley you find the local manager, Clehna Hacswell, sitting with Lucette. As you and Karen sit at the ends of their booth to block them in, you note that they're not wearing the bright coveralls most of the crew of the La Vie en Rose favor, but rather the sky-blue skirtsuits female Anaheim employees are expected to wear in more official circumstances. You can see a flicker of guilt in Lucette's eyes across the table from you.

“Care to tell me how Gundarium gamma produced by your company ended up on the wrong end of Lieutenant April's heat wires?” Karen growls, her green eyes glaring hard at Clehna. The Titans uniform looks like an ill fit for her: it probably wasn't cut with a muscular, large-busted woman in mind, but presents a stern enough image to intimidate most onlookers. And in this case, it's clearly working.

You produce a small file with the spectroscopic results. “A small sample of debris stuck to the magnetic head of the wire perfectly matches a bit of the material we 'sampled' while you were replacing the Lilium's shoulder armor,” you explain, causing the already pale woman next to you to go even paler. “A one-hundred percent match.”

“We tested the Lilium's armor too. You added trace amounts of cobalt and zinc after the first batch you sent us,” she hisses. “Then you sent the second batch to the Garden of Thorns, you traitorous BITCH!”

“Easy, Karen,” you warn as your Captain's voice rises.

The redhead backs off ever so slightly, but continues her tirade in a low voice. “How many Federation soldiers are going to DIE because of what you've done?”

“They have their orders,” Clehna replies in a hate-filled growl, “and we have ours.”

That seems to independently confirm what Lucette was telling you yesterday.

First order of business, place a tracker in the next shipment to the garden of thorns. Would Anihiem prefer to be under investigation for supplying terrorists, or publicly thanked for running a sting operation? Your choice.
This will also torpeado relations between Anaheim and the various Neo-Zeon Groups. Which is worthwhile in itself.

“And who exactly gave you those orders?” you press. “You didn't like them any more than I did when I heard.”

The woman simply shakes her head. “I take it you got to Lucette first? No matter. I don't know the names, Commander, and even if you knew all it would bring you is grief.”

“The Vist Foundation, right?”

Clehna turns to stare at you in surprise. “You know that much? Then you should know the position we're in. Our CEO is married to Martha Vist.”

“We know the situation,” you tell her. “That's why we're taking Lucette.”

The manager of La Vie en Rose nods sadly. “I think that would be best. I'll come up with a justification.”

“So this Foundation,” Karen asks, trying to piece the story together in her head. “What are their goals? Why do they want to control Anaheim, and why would they want to give technology to Zeon?”

“They have their own goals,” Clehna suggests. “Whatever they want is different to what the Federation wants, and what Zeon wants. And I have no idea what that is.”

Great. So that angle's all played out. Unless...

“Would you oppose us placing a tracking device in the next shipment?” you ask.

Lucette smiles grimly. “Better it comes out that we helped in the sting, right?”

After a while, Clehna nods. “You're right, young man. I hated aiding Zeon in any way shape or form... they killed my son in the war. If I can make something right come out of this, I will.”

Epac vulcans. Nobody ever bothers to block vulcans, even aces, and when the contact detonated E-Pac rounds detonate they won't live long enough to realize their error.
>>
>>35736818
Would the heat produced from firing the vulcans cook the rounds and cause internal damage?
>>
>>35736327
Jumpchain CYOA is basically the generals/containment thread for crossovers.

So by suggesting crossovers, they're breaking the quarantine/containment.
>>
>>35736818

Laser vulcans? Could work but I'm not sure how much ammo those things can carry. Also since they use solid ammo, the rounds aren't too visible. If we use lasers, they'll be visible and easier to block.

>>

No no, solid rounds with epac explosives, like the ones the doctor used to get us through the vault. the idea is that no MS pilot bothers to block vulcan rounds because they can't do any damage.

For 60mm vulcans, the size of the round would be too small.

At some point it MAY be feasible with 110mm rounds, which your suit can and does use. It would essentially pack the same punch as a light beam weapon against armor, but would ignore I-Fields and would have a chance to bypass ABC material.

It would probably be used at the same frequency as tracer rounds (one in five is standard practice).

Here's another idea: beam bayonets for our beam rifles. Instead of having to switch weapons when an enemy gets close, just press a button and engage the bayonet.

“Stay safe,” you tell her as you stand to leave. “If you or your crews need a place to lay low, our doors are open.”

Karen nods in agreement. “Sorry for what I said earlier, but... you know.”

“I know how it looked, so I can understand,” Clehna tells your Captain. “Thank you both.”

June 22, UC 0084. You look over the now-finished Lilium/Ikebana class machines, now referred to simply in the registry as Lilium-III. It's an impressive sight. Audrey catches you staring and comes over to explain.

“The shoulders have multi-role adaptability,” she tells you. “A 110mm gatling gun in the left and a small I-Field generator in the right are standard, and the latter will be replacing the ABC on Lilium and Viola. It'd leave the Bombers a bit more vulnerable, so those still have ABC on them to compensate when they're separate. The generators can only run for a short time, so Haman and Catrina will need to alternate them on and off as needed to save power.”

“I like it,” Catrina admits. “I've always wanted one of these, and now we've got them. Fucking. HYPE.”

Haman grins. “That's not all we've got. We've also got the first of a series of new funnels: we call them “Pathfinder-class” weapons.”

“Magnetic. Carries a small transmitter,” Rosse informs you. “Readable through our brainwaves.”

“It basically amps the locational signal from a normal remote weapon so that it can tap the same network of satellites people keep using to call us anonymously,” Carya explains. “Then ALICE picks up the signal. Over long ranges it's iffy, but it's better than nothing.”

“Karen's ordered us to leave one with Clehna,” Audrey tells you. “Wait... why's she here?"

“Bring Miss Artesia, Miss Haman, and Miss Mineva with you to the location enclosed. Bring however many weapons you can handle. But please bring no one else to the meeting.

“Yours in good faith,

“Since when do we ever do the smart thing?” Catrina counters. “Though... it's up to Artesia and Mineva if they want to take the risk.”

“A child?” Rossweisse asks. Her tone is uncertain rather than accusing.

“But will she understand the risk?” Audrey wonders.

Sickle. Basically, a beam saber that can be thrown and then retracted.

Other possibility would be to run the beam down the outside of the physical chain that generates it, so that you can do shit like entangle an enemy MS and then activate the beam on the chain to shred it, or whip the chain through enemy beam fire to disperse it.

On a completely different front, developing some sort of Mobile Doll system for use with Balls seems like an obvious idea.

Given the nature of warfare in the Minovsky era, most mobile weapons are still better when piloted by humans; shielding from M-particles would be a bitch, and even a single breach in that shielding means your Mobile Doll stops working as the computers fry. But Balls, more than any other mobile weapon, are expendable. A single hit anywhere makes them useless even with a human pilot, so the weakness of complex electronics to Minovsky particles doesn't matter. And it's an easy way to add a bit more punch to the average deployment without increasing the number of lives you're risking.
>>
>>35737813
“Let's at least ask Artesia and Mineva,” you suggest. “After all, this guy knows they're with us. That fact alone means it concerns them.”

“It may also be an implied threat,” Audrey adds. “I hope not, but I can't help but wonder.”

Aboard the ship, you have Karen call Artesia and Mineva to you, along with the rest of your officers. You explain to them carefully what you've been told in the letter.

“I don't like it,” Emma insists.

“But we have to go,” Artesia counters. “He clearly knows more than we do about what's going on, and he knows who I am, and who Lady Mineva is. He's clearly the real deal.”

Mineva seems unusually poised about the decision: either she's made up her mind, or she really has no idea what she's committing to. “I will go. If it will explain why people keep attacking Dominic and his friends, it's worth the risk, right?” Her guardians seem upset by her decision, but in the end agree to respect her wishes.

Karen frowns. “Emma, keep your team on full alert. It seems like we're going to do this, so we need to be ready for any complication. Anyone else who isn't going needs to be at their post as well. Catharine? Reiko? Get Miss Audevie up to speed on our projects and put her to work with Emary. Hopefully it'll free her up for damage control.”

Oh, we can take ALICE in a Haro now that I think of it. He didn't specify AIs, right?
>>
>>35738450
Except it doesn't say that. The charter's text says nothing about Newtypes. It says that if a space-adapted species develops, the Federation will prioritize including them in the administrative process. That could be interpreted in a number of ways. It could be taken as saying that a Newtype would be given greater rights in government than an Oldtype. Or it could just be the acknowledgment that if humanity starts to change as a species that the Federation has an obligation to include them instead of discount them as no longer human.
>>
>>35738206
"ALICE!" you announce loudly. The AI appears on the screen nearest to you, where you peer down at her.

"I want you to tap into that Haro toy I bought you. You're coming along for the ride: hack anything and everything, and keep records of whatever we see."

"Of course, Dominic. I will begin preparations."

'Dominic'? you wonder silently as ALICE's avatar disappears. You shake your head, that's a 'later' question.

"Mineva?" you ask, kneeling in front of the Zeon princess. "You wanna be sneaky with me?"

She nods emphatically... so fucking adorable when she's enthusiastic! Maybe you'll have a daughter of your own one day who'll be this adorable.

"Good. All you have to do is bring Haro with you when we go visit the stranger. And don't tell anyone, okay?"

"Okay!" she replies with a bright smile that could almost give you diabetes.

"As for who's coming with us... Karen? You up for it?"

Your Captain ponders the question, but ends up shaking her head. "As much as I want answers, my place is here. On our ship. I'm a Captain, Dom, not a bodyguard."

"Then Carya, Catrina," you announce. "You want to come along?"

They grin wildly, eyes shifting from red to blue and back again. "And find out the secrets of the universe? Hell fucking yes we do, let me grab my guns."

"Guns?" Haman asks out of curiosity.

"We were issued two sidearms."

Then it's settled. The trip to Industrial 7 took a few days, where you made it a point to hang out with Emma and her team for once. She seems to have settled into her role quite naturally, and it's nice to be able to talk to a woman who isn't attracted to you through some vaguely explainable psychic connection. Refreshing, really.

Oh, Domscartes. You're a Thrallherd and have yet to realize it. Lucky bastard. She'll feel the psychic pull and want on your wild ride eventually.
>>
>>35738765
She's probably already got Apolly and Roberto trained, yo.
>>
>>35738708
Hey now, just because 80% of the women we know are attracted to us via space magic doesn't mean we don't ever have conversations with ones who don't. Emary and Reiko and Catharine don't count, surely. And if we're just counting those who are attracted to us for psychic reasons then we can count out Defrah and Nina. And Artesia's bonding to us has manifested just as friendship, not romance, so that's a thing. Geez, you fuck one entire combat team and people start assuming you don't know how to have non-sexual interactions with women.

June 26th, UC 0084.

The outside of the hospital you've been sent to was as nondescript as it is inside. It seems oddly quiet.

Haman, Carrina, and yourself all allow your hands to hover near your pistols, the alertness required to truly scan the corridors for threats distracts you from the feeling of ailing and dying patients in this ward, and from the scent of antiseptics and air freshener that makes you want to retch.

Artesia seems fine with it, though. Her medical training probably helps her ignore how shitty a place a hospital can be, and you truly envy her.

Even Mineva picks up on it.

"I don't like this place," she tells you, drawing close to your side.

"Stay close," you tell her, grasping her hand. "We're almost there."

"Nobody's paid us any attention," Carrina observes nervously. "Like we're not even here..."

Haman says nothing, but you've never quite felt her this on edge before. She's clearly spooked by something, and you can't quite place what it is...

On the fifth floor there's a room guarded by a tall man, perhaps Emma's age, with a shaved head and well-kept facial hair.

"This is the place," you mutter, eying the door and the man guarding it.

You motion to Carrina, whose sidearms ease out of their holsters as you approach the man... who's almost a head taller than you, what the shit?

“I see you've kept Delaz's beard alive,” you joke. “No wonder this place feels so wrong!”

The man cracks a grin. “It's a nice beard, honestly.”

“You'd look pretty good with one,” he responds in a gruff tone.

“No response to my friend drawing?”

He shrugs. “A reasonable precaution to take. You can go inside, but I'd have to ask your friend holster her weapons. There will be no need for them inside.

You nod at Carrina again, and she quickly returns the pistols to their homes on her thighs... lucky guns.

Inside the room, there's a single bed, a television screen, and a potted fern. The window shows a nice view of the park across the way, and there's a chair set near the bedtable that faces towards the window.

In the bed, there's a man who looks to be about a thousand years old. His long white hair is neatly kept in a somewhat Arabic-looking beard, and he wears a small white cap with simple white robes. Not hospital robes, but a flowing white garment of his own.

“Welcome, my young friends,” he greets you warmly, sitting up with some difficulty and inclining his head in a respectful bow. “I am Syam Vist. I assume you have many questions for me.”

“Why are we here,” you tell him, getting the predictable first round out of the way.

“Why indeed?” he replies with a faint smile. “Why indeed... when I was a young man, I was a very angry young man. And angry young men can be easily persuaded to join other angry young men to do very foolish things. On New Year's Eve, just hours before the Universal Century calendar began, I infiltrated the colony at Laplace alongside a team of southeast-Asian terrorists.”

"You were one of them?" Artesia interrupts angrily. "The terrorists who destroyed the Presidential residence in UC 0001? The ones that started this whole sick nightmare in motion?"

"Yes, but you disappoint me, Miss Artesia," Syam replies sadly: whether he's sad at Artesia's outburst or his own admission you can't be sure. "That is the wrong question to be asking."

"Who sent you?" Surprisingly, it was Mineva who asked.

"Now that, Miss Zabi, is the correct question. We were hired by Georges Marcenas, so that he could rise to power and impress his pro-Earth politics rather than his brother's more moderate policies. Reactions against Spacenoids were extreme, and Earthnoid politics leaned so far to the right that even I, a terrorist, was surprised by the vitriol. “Earth Nationalism”, some called it then. And of course, as the sole survivor, I had a certain... 'understanding' with the new administration. Not the least reason among many being that I came into possession of the only remaining copy of the original Universal Century Charter."

"You mean there was a different version?" Haman asks, genuinely interested as she sits in the chair and beckons Mineva to sit on her knee.

"Indeed, child. Specifically, there was an article that would have granted any new subspecies that arose from the exodus to space priority in government, which seemed pointless at the time and was scrapped as giving too much potential authority to Spacenoids. I used this original copy to gain some authority and security for myself: basically, blackmail. And then... there was the War. The missing sections of the first Charter would have validated many of Zeon's claims to independence, and so began a new phase in the long game. One where both sides were held hostage."

Syam takes a few moments where he shuts his eyes, seemingly lost in his own memories. And to be still alive now, he must be at least a hundred. That's a lot of memory to get lost in.

“So you allowed the war to happen?” Mineva asks, confused. “What for?”

“I had hoped there would be no war,” he admits sadly. “With the militarization of the Federation after the attack on Laplace... after OUR attack on Laplace... I thought Zeon would only ever have enough force to create a stalemate. A foolish dream of men deluded by their own power.”

“A Tirpitz equilibrium,” Haman comments, immediately understanding Syam's thoughts. “You should have known that could never have held forever.”

“You've quite the mind for strategy, don't you Miss Karn?” Syam laughs softly, which after a moment breaks down into a brief coughing fit. He confinues speaking once the fit ends, though he seems to have tired a little even in the short time you've been here. “Yes, that was many of our hopes. But we had also hoped that the militarization of the whole Earth Sphere would keep ourselves relevant against another threat... one from the outside.”

“Jupiter,” you mutter darkly. Of course. It fits perfectly.

“Yes. The 'Jovians', they were already beginning to call themselves. They control the Helium, and the Helium must flow. Crux Dogatie, their leader, knows that well, and he knew that the Federation would seek to bring Jupiter's resources into its fold at some point. And if the Jovians, once accustomed to the struggle for survival out beyond the asteroid belt, decided to preempt that annexation... a peace-minded Federation could never prevent that from happening,” the ancient terrorist explains. “The power they stole would then be stolen.”

“And with no chance to win a straight fight, it becomes a political battle,” you conclude with a nod.

Carrina still has yet to speak.

I never understood the idea that water is rare in the Jupiter Empire. There are several Jovian moons made out of nothing but ice. Why can't they harvest them? “... why us?” Carrina asks, putting words to the question you all share.

“Three heiresses to Zeon,” Syam eventually replies, “and the noble-hearted Newtype warriors who they joined. If anyone has a right to know, it is your crew. If anyone can act on this knowledge, it is your crew.”

Carrina falls silent, seemingly struck by the weight of the old man's words: he's essentially telling her that he's placed the future of the human race on your shoulders, after all.

Finally, you manage a second question. “Why betray your Foundation? Your family? Why now?”

“Simple,” he explains. “They see only their own profit now, my progeny and the Federation alike. Even my original goals for the Foundation, though misguided, have been forgotten in the scramble to preserve power. The old order can no longer be maintained to the detriment of the future, and so Zeon and the Federation alike must be removed from the equation: at least in their current forms. And my Foundation must go with them. It all has to go, my boy, if there is to be any hope for us.”

“And can we see the Charter?” Artesia asks. The old man shakes his head.

“Sadly, no. It is the lynchpin to the old ways: the Federation will not allow such a thing to be discovered, and the Foundation will not allow it to be destroyed. Even the knowledge of its existence is taboo.”

“So where do you go from here?” you ask. “Titans, Jupiter, the Federation... even in the Republic. Things are getting out of control out there.”

Vist, for the first time since you arrived, manages a smile. “Simple. Either follow my plan and go to Jupiter, gathering intel and weakening Mars Zeon and the Jupiter Empire in the process, or stay here and put out the fires while I send someone else to do it.”

“The choice, as always, is yours to make, as well it should be. But either way, you shall have what support I can arrange over my children and grandchildren's constant bickering."
>>
>>35740030
No, I get that it's a method of establishing control. I just mean "Why does anyone fall for it?" How does Dogatie keep people from just harvesting water ice? You're right about the radiation thing, though. The Jovian magnetosphere is a real bitch to deal with. Maybe some sort of I-Field shielding system?

Antimatter production on Mercury would be a nice counter to the helium monopoly. Or a mining operation out at Saturn; the distance might be worse, but pretty much everything else about Saturn makes it better than Jupiter as a place to mine for helium-3.

>>35740350
Right. Voight isn't with the Republic, and neither is he with the Mars Zeon. He's going to be trouble, since he's in it only for himself.

Aw shit, Voight is going to end up with Scirocco, isn't he?
>>
>>35740327
So the Dogose Giar and General Revel are currently still under construction? Did that Magellan variant designed to carry MS become much more common due to more Magellan's surviving Stardust?
>>
>>35740448
Or Dogatie. We don't know whether Scirocco is in it for himself or not.
>>
>>35740460
General Revil doesnt get built until post CCA
>>
>>35740460

Wasnt that Magellan variant one that had to be built from the ground up?

Likely with more older ships surviving stardust, there would have been a lesser rush to build newer ships since the old ones were still usable.

You probably still have a lot of Magellans with the GMs strapped to the hull.
>>
>>35740505
It doesn't get finished until post CCA. But since half the earth sphere isn't starving to death due to Delaz being a dick, the Earth Sphere Federation has a LOT more money to throw around
>>
>>35740293
Riddick will follow anyone who offers him a chance to kill some spacenoids. He doesn't care about politics.

He could be the perfect man to throw into the meatgrinder when the war against Mars Zeon or Jupiter begins. Just keep him away from Earth and its colonies and he could be useful.

>>35740485
I went with the assumption that Scirocco works for Dogatie, but you've got a point there.
>>
>>35740425
As much as I despise it, we may haft to split the team. One goes to sniff out Jupiter in a stolen helium freighter or Haman's ship while another stays and deals with the locals by shooting them.

>>35740523
They'd probably begin a massive fleet overhaul. Replacing battleships with carriers and escorts.
>>
>>35740485
I'd say "probably" on that one; 'ol Poopsmith doesn't have the best track record when it comes to staying loyal to a power structure that doesn't have him at the top.
>>
>>35740573
I can easily imagine Scirocco leading an Earth Sphere controlled by Neo Zeon to burn down Dogatie's palace because he hates Jupiter as easily I can see Scirocco strip mining Earth for supplies.

Char doesn't really do commitment. Running his own faction as something other than a giant excuse for one last fight with Amuro would not have gone well for him.
>>
>>35740752
who knows what a living kid could have done to his outlook on life.
>>
>>35740790
Probably get the kid killed or something. Char's not that great of a person. Probably even worse of a father. Natalie would've raised the kid while Ridden went off to be a space prince.

On the brightside, we're still going to get another shoah when Edward and Bernini square off over Axis.
