Welcome to Academy City. The time is lunch, the weather is crisp, and the date is December 23.

You are Kyril Torikov and you were having lunch. Earlier this morning you were part of an incident that involved a Code M artefact, your best friend, and sniper fire. It made the current situation a little bizarre. You were sitting at a table in a café with Ben-jii, and Nayuta. Parked outside was Ben-jii’s car with the artefact inside. You were still able to partake in food with your helmet on, but it did look out of place. Nayuta for her part had an icepack on her forehead where she had been hit by an anti-materiel round. Every so often she would emit a low groan, as if trying to overcome a headache. She probably was.

To everyone else, it looked like a black foreigner with an afro, a motorcycle ganger, and a primary school girl, were having lunch together. Reality was stranger. To be specific, it was a Code M Anti-Skill officer, a combat cyborg prototype, and said cyborg’s handler, who was probably also a cyborg, having lunch together. The downtime gave you time to think about what had happened this morning. Things like, why was this particular Code M artefact highly sought? There had to be a reason it was so outside of being a Code M artefact. How did Ilija, a slip of a girl, fit in to it as the self-declared owner of the shield? She certainly felt eerily calm amidst the violence and destruction in her apartment earlier this morning. Ben-jii might know more about the artefact, whilst Nayuta was probably a better person to ask about the girl.

The two weren’t too terribly indisposed so you talked to,

You were more curious about the Ilija girl. She obviously wasn’t some innocent third party. In fact, she should have been one of the prime suspects. It slipped your mind since you had other things to worry about. Anti-Skill were responsible for her interrogation anyway so it wasn’t like it was your jurisdiction to begin with. You were just responsible for making sure Code M doesn’t become a problem. Somewhere along the line, Anti-Skill screwed up and you wanted to know where, why and how. That’s why you asked Nayuta about it. As was her want, she rummaged around in her backpack and pulled out a small file.
“I ran some checks too nii-chan,” Nayuta explained, “Her file was created in October. Before that? We don’t actually have any records of her, paper or not, anywhere.”

She was an illegal immigrant then?

“No records of family, but she did have a birth certificate dated,” she paused to check the file, “fifteen years ago, from a hospital in Academy City.”

“So she’s a product of the city?” Ben-jii asked.

“We can’t be sure,” Nayuta replied, “We weren’t even aware of the Code M threat until this September.”

“Ah, yeah, I remember that,” Ben-jii agreed.

You didn’t really but pressed on,

“But that raises a few questions. Was the City ever aware of the existence of Code M in the first place? Or are these records false to begin with?”

It was if the City was fighting a secret war that was now being brought out in to the open. If anything else, you had to determine if this Ilija girl was going to be a threat to the City. She was deeply involved with Code M elements. Ilija hadn’t proved to be unprepared however so you might need more firepower to deal with her. You turned to Nayuta and said,

Nayuta looked at you happily.

“That’s the spirit nii-chan,” she clapped and started rummaging through her backpack again.

“Well that’s not how I’d go about it,” Ben-jii interjected.

“You weren’t there,” Nayuta snapped airily, “I’ve been thinking about this for a while now.”

She produced some schematics for prosthetic arms, your prosthetic arms.

“I mean we can’t deal with everything with guns alone,” she continued.

“True, that’s doesn’t leave a lot of less-than-lethal options,” Ben-jii conceded, “But I don’t understand what a rocket launcher has to do with it.”

Superimposed on top was a transparent sheet of plastic. Nayuta was furiously scribbling about it.

“That’s exactly what nii-chan needs,” Nayuta answered without looking up, “Though if we do add a rocket launcher that may but a damper on your melee capabilities.”

“And you can’t just make me a new arm?” you asked.

“Budget,” Nayuta muttered, “Among other things. Besides, I don’t think you’d want to disturb the rocket in your arm too much, unless you don’t mind losing it.”

Ben-jii smirked when Nayuta tentatively named the new missile, “the Ex-Wife.”

“Though if you really want to be boring I’m sure I could just retrofit my ‘stunwhip’ for your arm,” she paused, “Worked reasonably well against the Railgun. So it can be as lethal as you want it, though without the range of a real gun.”

“The third-ranked Level 5?” you asked for clarification.

“Yep.”

Though id rather have both.

“How much of a damper on my melee capabilities are we talking here?” you asked.

“Well you could replace either arm, or both, doesn’t matter. If they are, superhuman stresses like stopping bullets, punching holes in walls, stuff like that, are a no-no, unless you like premature detonation.”

“Then I’ll go with the stun whip first,” you chose.

“I should have it done after Christmas, then we can have it installed,” Nayuta said, “Then we can perform some tests.”

The way she said “tests” was rather ominous though. Ben-jii eyed her, concerned.

“Everyone keeps saying the Kiharas were off their rocker,” he shook his head, “But what do I know?”

“We’re all geniuses,” Nayuta explained, “But that’s not enough. We need problems to solve, questions to answer, we need an obsession, something to pursue ruthlessly and relentlessly. The harder it is the better. It’s the Kihara brand of madness.”

“And what’s your obsession?” you wondered.

“Child Errors,” she answered but refused to elaborate.

Figuring the subject was personal you shifted on to the next topic,

“While we’re on the subject of upgrades, I could use more information on mythology and religion in my head.”

“That is actually a good idea,” Ben-jii added.

Nayuta just gave you look, as if she was wondering if you were stupid or something.

“Nii-chan, did you forget you have Rank B security clearance and internet access?”

“What? Am I supposed to google it in the middle of a gunfight?” you weren’t sure it’d help.

“Fiiiiine,” Nayuta whined, “I’ll see if I can borrow TESTAMENT and just zap a library in to your brain later. But only because you asked nii-chan.”

That was the concluding note over lunch. Ben-jii had other stuff to do, namely securing the Code M artefact, and left. Nayuta was still scribbling out more designs. As for you, you didn’t really have anything planned yourself. There were two things you could think of to occupy your time however.

It was a small thing, but you didn’t forget about it. You’ve met many personalities from Tokiwadai, the Dictator for one, the Ace, in a past life. The Queen, which you referred to as Queenie despite yourself, had left you with a set of coordinates. She said that a mutual friend was interested in seeing you again. You didn’t know anyone in your social circle past and present that could possibly be on friendly terms with Queenie. Thus, you bade farewell to Nayuta and set off for some personal business.

The set of coordinates turned out to be the cemetery. There was only one in Academy City, and it was in School District 10. It was suspicious. Even the building itself didn’t look like a real cemetery. There was no grass, or even a sense of tranquillity. It was a barren building that cycled through tombstones for those who knew was interred here. What was the point of all this you wondered? Did she simply wish for you to look at your own grave? Or was it because your mutual friend was going to show up eventually? It wasn’t like you didn’t have the time.

As you waited, you were surprised that your own grave marker was given offerings, as recent as last week. It had been regularly visited each week, roughly around the same time. If the pattern was followed, another visit was soon to be overdue. You were surprised by who it was, as the young man walked up to you. In his hand was a small bottle of Finnish vodka.

“Oh, I didn’t know Kyril would have a visitor today,” he remarked.

You kept silent.

“Was he your friend too?” he asked before he caught himself, “Sorry, I guess I should introduce myself. Kamijou Touma, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

It was a bit of a bind honestly speaking. The big question in your mind, however, was what relationship did Queenie have with Touma? However the one you voiced was,

“Finnish? Really?”

He didn’t seem offended when you grabbed the bottle from him and took a swig. Alcohol was alcohol but you could tell you were partial to the stronger ones. Overall Combat Efficiency rose to 101%.

“His mother is Karelian,” he informed you.

“The flowers were a nice touch but you had the right idea,” you returned the bottle, “But it’s not like he can be picky about it.”

Touma regarded it for a moment. Then he too drank from the bottle. It was a smaller, measured, sip. You figured he had a lower tolerance.

“That was Sparky’s,” Touma explained, “She comes every week. I come when I can.”

“Busy with school?”

“Not really, not with the war any way,” he shook his head, “I’m looking for his killer. If not then the reason he was killed.”

You had nothing to say to that save,

“What are you going to do when you find out?”

“I haven’t thought that far,” he admitted, “It’s not like I can anyway. Whatever the truth is, I’ll deal with it when find it.”

It was a simple thing to reveal yourself here and now. You didn’t, not yet. On one hand, you were touched by the sentiment. Touma wasn’t one of your closest friends but even so. On the other, you didn’t know what he was getting up to and how far he was willing to go. If you were really his friend, you wouldn’t want him to go further. Curiosity killed the cat.

“Then I hope you’re ready.”

Thankfully this was a private area. Even if there were cameras, you were pretty sure you could keep out of sight. The helmet came off with a familiar hiss. You liked to think you were recognisable without the helmet on. The thought was validated with how Touma reacted to your face.

“Though I have to ask, how’d you get all chummy with the bitch Queen of Tokiwadai anyway?”

“Who?”

You think he was trying to cope with the shock by latching on to another topic.

“The Queen of Tokiwadai,” you repeated, “You know, Shokuhou Misaki.”

“Who?”

Either he genuinely did not know her, or he was lying. You were pretty sure he wasn’t. That meant Queenie had meant for you to meet with Sparky, though you’re pretty sure those two aren’t thick as thieves. You turned your thoughts back to Touma.

“You might want to have a drink before we go on.”

As he did, you told him your tale. You told him what had happened before summer break. You were telling him now so he wouldn’t make a similar mistake. It was the least you could do. You didn’t want him to end up like you. Thankfully he didn’t see the need to physically rearrange your facial features. Before he got any funny ideas you slipped the helmet back on.

“I’m still dead on paper though,” you warned, “But for what it’s worth I’m sorry.”

Touma shook his head.

“No, the truth was more than enough,” he said, “Even if you don’t deserve.”

He gestured towards you.

“Touma I was a thief, and a criminal.”

“But you were also my friend, right?”

He held out his fist.

“Still am.”

“Ow.”

You forgot your arms were tougher than his.

“First, we’re going to get some drinks,” you announced, “Then you’re going to tell me why you know so much about my mother.”

“As long as it’s not alcoholic,” Touma stated, “I remember the last time we went drinking.”

“And it was fun right?” you pretended confusion.

“Not the morning after.”

You shrugged and acquiesced.

The time is late afternoon, the weather is comfy, and the date remains unchanged.

The two of you had sat down at a café to enjoy some hot chocolate. It was a nice contrast to the wintry weather outside. Thankfully, nothing too terrible happened on the way over, not yet anyway. You liked to think he didn’t fall on top of the waitress on purpose. He hadn’t dared to take a sip just yet. It was a steaming hot mug, as his trip with the waitress had attested.

“She’s very nice, if a little scary,” he started.

Your eyes narrowed at his pronunciation of ‘nice’.

“I don’t have a crush on her damn it!”

“I didn’t say anything,” your tone remained neutral.

“I mean when we first met in London I thought she was a beautiful blonde.”

“That’s not right,” you recalled, “she was a brunette.”

“Yeah, it turns out her hair is actually white,” he explained, “But she’s not that old, can’t be older than my mom, or even Sparky’s.”

“Sparky’s?” you inclined your head slightly, “I guess you have a thing for older women.”

“Kinda,” he didn’t seem sure.

Maybe he was afraid you’d take offence? You probably should have told him that you weren’t going to tear him limb from limb for thinking your mother was easy on the eyes. Watching him squirm was kind of entertaining and you’ve come to understand that your mother was a classy lady. You did tell him you were capable of tearing him limb from limb though. The conversation continued,

“London?” you picked up on that.

Touma scratched the back of his head after pinning down the date.

“I had some business with Index and it was more of an accident on that day,” his voice faded.

You thought you heard him muttering about blood. Clearly it was a traumatic subject. Going by the dates, it was near the start of the war. Best move on to another subject.

“Is she here, in the City?”

“Huh,” he snapped out of it, “Uh yeah, we were travelling in the same direction. She wanted to see you again I think.”

“Then we shall,” you stated.

You had always wanted to know more about your mother. She hadn’t been a major figure in your life but she had loved you. Or so you had been told. With an opportunity to meet her again like this, you weren’t going to pass it up.

“I don’t actually know where she is,” Touma admitted, “I think she has her own place in the City but I didn’t want to stalk her or anything. I do have her number lying around somewhere at home.”

You inclined your head again.

“If I ever came across you,” he hastily added, “She wanted me to call her if I ever saw you again. With your, er, condition I haven’t had an excuse to.”

The way he was acting, it was like he was half hopeful, half nervous. You got up. Touma shrunk back.

“Well?” you asked, “Weren’t you going to give her a call?”

The walk to Touma’s dorm was brisk. You let him handle the call, as he told her how he had found her son. Her schedule must have been real busy if she could only meet tomorrow night. Well, at least you had a date and time. With barely restrained anticipation, you parted ways with Touma and returned home.

The time is 0251, the weather is cool, and the date is now December 24.

You couldn’t sleep. It was hard to contain yourself as you laid down for some rest. You were finally going to meet your mother. Your mind was awhirl with your mental image of her. It was built up of the few scraps of information that you knew about her. She was pretty, sure. She had white hair. You supposed she was at that age. She possessed a firearm that was also once in your possession. You wondered what kind of profession she had, past and present. If you weren’t already awake you probably wouldn’t have noticed the slight creak of your window sliding open. A burglar huh? Fancy that.

Your pistol was underneath the other unused pillow. The helmet was on a desk way out of arm’s reach. Someone had slipped in to the room and your only clue was the silhouette.

You roused readily and noisily, grabbing your pistol as discreetly as possible before you headed for the bathroom. Without your helmet, you could see in the dark as good as the average person. If your visitor was not a burglar then the bed was the last place you wanted to be. There was no telling after all. Fortunately, or unfortunately, you reached the bathroom unmolested. Either they were waiting to attack as soon as you came out or otherwise, you didn’t know. In hindsight, pretending to go to the bathroom was probably a bad idea. Your natural night vision was ruined by the time you’ve finished.

The burglar, seeing as you weren’t attacked yet, had to know you would notice the window. It was a cold night. The desk and your helmet, was by the window, close enough to make an inconspicuous detour. Your other option was to go for the lights. Your vision hadn’t adjusted yet and if the intruder was still in the room they’d be momentarily distracted. Add to the fact that your gun didn’t have night sights, your chances of hitting anything were rather poor. Another option was to wait for your eyes to adjust to the darkness before hunting down whoever was in your room. It wasn’t exactly a wide open space so you weren’t afraid of a little brawl. Or you could just pretend nothing was wrong and go back to sleep. It wasn’t like there was anything worth stealing besides your helmet. The helmet had anti-theft devices so it wasn’t the end of the world if they grabbed it.

It was best to strike while you had the advantage of surprise, and eye sight adjusted for well lit conditions. There was a light switch by the kitchen area, which you switched on with a brush of your hand. Your gun was already up and scanning the room. Then it fell on figure sitting at your kitchen table.

“Hello,” he greeted with a cheery wave, “Hope you remember me Kyril.”

Yeah, you could remember him alright. There was only one in your little band of thieves that could move so silently.

“Tadakuni,” you recalled, “What are you doing in my room?”

He produced a small card from his breast pocket.

“You really should take a seat,” his smile widened, “I’m here for two things. First, to review your contract with THIEF.”

The card on the table had a string of numbers. It was a phone number. You kept your gun trained on him.

“Second, is to invite you to a Christmas party,” he continued, “I thought it’d be a nice way to unwind, with all of us busy our own things. That was nice prank you pulled on Sagara by the way, I approve.”

You’re not sure what exactly he was referring to.

“You’re calm for being held at gunpoint,” you noted.

It's the principle of the thing. When someone says they know you won't shoot them shooting them is the only choice.

Worst crew member. That and just taking a shot past him sounds amazing. Although it would be a dumb idea since he is an ally.

You considered shooting him. Hell, you even considered shooting at him if only for the principle of the matter. Your more practical side won out. It would waste a bullet and time to clean up afterwards. You lowered your weapon.

“The whole gang will be there,” Tadakuni sweetened the deal.

You nodded.

“Of course,” you said, “It wouldn’t be the same without me.”

“No, it wouldn’t,” Tadakuni agreed rather darkly.

He gave you details for the party.

“Be sure to bring a date,” he finished, “We’ll have plenty of mistletoe.”

With that, he left through the window he came in. Looks like the next few days were going to be rather busy. You got three hours of solid sleep that night.

Where were you when the Second Battle of Britain broke out? You were in London, of all places. Many iconic landmarks and skyscrapers didn’t escape the blitz. The city caught fire. In between trying to keep Index alive and finding a way back home, you just about had your hands full. It was just your luck you stumbled upon someone you’d never thought you’d ever meet. Her name was Ilyena Torikov. She was Kyril’s mom. Why did the mothers of your friends always have to be so damn attractive anyway? If Tsuchi were here he’d probably blame your preference for older mature women. It certainly wasn’t because you had an unresolved Oedipus complex.

She was wandering the bombed out streets of London in a white and gold robe. With the cheerful but coarse voice, she greeted you and introduced herself. It was as if the bombing, or the fires, or the massive air battle didn’t matter to her at all. No, what mattered was that you were friends with her son. It just came up during conversation. Index, for the life of her was carefully eyeing the woman like she had some kind of disease. There was nothing stopping her from continuing to chat with you, despite how one-sided it was. It was as you were picking your way through the rubble that she asked a very awkward question.

“So, how has Kyril been doing?”

You weren’t sure how to answer that. She did not know. It was simply because she had been slightly detained. Though from the way Index reacted to that, you would have sworn she was the first person to have escaped Alcatraz or something.

You told her the truth, the full truth and nothing but the truth. It was her reaction to it that scared you the most. She laughed. It wasn’t a normal laugh. It was broken, mad, laughter, the kind you see psychopaths and villains in films did. Well she did admit to being imprisoned, so maybe her incarceration had slightly influenced her. It was to your relief that she didn’t take it out on you. Those poor French paratroopers didn’t stand a chance. You understood why Index was so very, very afraid of her. After all, Mrs. Torikov punched out all their blood. That was not a figurative statement.

As luck would have it, she managed to learn that the French had cleared an air corridor to rain down paratroopers in conjunction with landings in Kent. They had a foothold on the British Isles. With the way things were going, their major objectives were of course Downing Street and the various symbols of the British Royal Family. They needed to take the capital so that they may ransom it off after having ensured the satisfaction of their honour. It was a strange reason to go to war in the modern age, you thought. There wasn’t much time to dwell on it however.

First, you needed transport, which Mrs. Torikov thought could be procured by raiding a nearby SAS compound. Then you had to decide on which way was the best way to get back to Academy City. There were two options. Fleeing north, to Scandinavia, and then through Russian, was a bit of a journey risking capture at the hands of Anihilatus. All of this was of course while Academy City carpet bombed the Russians. The other option was to cross the channel in to France and then across the Mediterranean. It was unlikely you’d be pursued through an active warzone, hostile North Africa and the Middle East. Once you reached India you’d be home free.

Either way, you were leaving the country. There was no question about it. While you debated the merits of the choices, in the end, it was the one behind the wheel that made the choice for you. Mrs. Torikov was heading towards France. It gave you a proper view of how the French were able to cross the channel. Simply put, it was frozen over. Ships of all kinds dotted the surface. Most of them were British. All of them were on fire. Columns of French armour rolled across the ice, transporting troops and firepower. Yet the ice surrounding them did not melt. Pools of blood formed on the pockmarked surface. Artillery, Mrs. Torikov had explained, was responsible for the craters. Magic on the other hand, was the only explanation for the unnatural ice.

It wasn’t that far to France. The trick was evading detection. You had your fair share of scrapes. Index was not the stealthiest travelling companion. You and France never did share a friendly relationship in the first place. Mrs. Torikov was of course, rather unrepentant in her casual slaughter of anyone that got in her way. It was something you didn’t agree with, no matter the necessity of it. Once you had reached the port town of Nice Mrs. Torikov entertained the thought of parting ways. Apparently she was waiting for a ship, whereas you and Index were going to fly out of the nearby airport. Index on one hand didn’t like flying, but on the other, a voyage by sea was going to take longer and that meant more time stuck with the so-called “Witch of Karelia.” The decision, as ever, was up to you.

“I’m staying with you,” you argued, “Who knows what kind of trouble you’ll get yourself in to.”

“You remind me a boy I used to know,” she replied, “He saw too many things that a child should not have, always getting in to trouble because of it. But he didn’t break from it. No, he rose to the challenge as a fine young man. He was also very in love with me. It is a shame that I could never love him back.”

It was times like these you remembered that she was Kyril’s mother. Most of the time you thought she was some kind of Russian magical super spy. The three of you were on a deserted pier. Index wasn’t happy, but it didn’t look like she’d be happy with either choice.

“So remember, you must not follow me because you are a lovesick puppy, but because you are your own man,” she finished, “Even if in the end there is nothing but heartbreak.”

You gulped and nodded. From her pocket she fished out a coin. It was made of silver and held no distinguishing mark. She flicked it in to the water as Index looked on with trepidation. You thought nothing had happened. It wasn’t until a disturbance in the water formed did you notice it. There were three masts that emerged first, followed by the rest of the ship. It was made of wood with two decks of bronze cannons. At its helm was someone you knew.

“Hail HYDRA,” Mrs. Torikov shouted.

“Black Widow, so nice of you to join us,” Teacher greeted her, “I take it my agents were successful?”

Maybe she was a Russian magical super spy after all.

Interlude End.

Has Sagara mentioned to Ilyena that Kyril is a cyber zombie at this point?
>>

It wouldn't be too hard.
>>36733498
He's under no obligation to.
>>
>>36733582
On a 1-10 scale how much more dangerous is Sagara now? Why does no one seem surprised they Kyril can never die? Why is Nayuta such a QT?

How many bombs did AC put in Robo Kyril?

Since robo-Kyrils arms are mechanical is there anything really stopping him from getting spikes stuck on his knuckles? It could be a interesting trick to poison someone.

>>
>>36734252
He just needs to save up.
>>
>>36734173
We probably should get Nayuta to add that in to the whip enhancement. Would be very useful to have something like Cyanide in them. That way just one punch would be enough to kill something. By the way how goes the need padlet?

>>36734252
Kyril does need to get his money back.
>>
>>36734339
>>36734342
I suppose asking Nayuta nicely to hack Kyril's crime money back is not possible?
>>
>>36734388
Now there is an idea. Depends on if they have it still under lock and keep. Though honestly Kyril kind of has an advantage now.

He has deeper ties to the city so it's easier to get away with things and he also has ties to Thief depending on how well things go with Sagara. So he has decent odds of making good cash if he works smart.
>>
>>36734342
Oh right, should probably be finished by Christmas.
>>36734388
Speaking of the Vault of Dirty Cash, I have plans for that.

glad to hear it

> I have plans for that.

Why do I have a feeling someone will try to get it and then Kyril shall just be sitting there going "I don't know why but I feel as if the men in my past life is screaming in anguish."
