You eye the map carefully, spotting the likely responders at airbases throughout the American southeast. “And if we pop our stealth, they'll know we're coming and scramble to try and intercept.”

“That's the risk, yes,” Karen agrees.

“So what's our plan? Do we attack, or do we defend?” Emma presses.

“Or is there an alternative we're missing?” Ilia muses quietly.

Christina points quietly at a spot on the map denoting the MPIWS station's likely location. “So we need to strike here? That puts two bases in intercept range, and we'd need to reverse course and travel around to avoid both.”

“That's our only target,” Rossweisse declares. “The very thing that gives them intercept capacity, the station itself.”

“Without it they'd be blind,” Audrey agrees.

“But attack it, and they'll see us coming, won't they?” Diana pouts. “Why can't things be simple?”

“I miss simple too, kid,” Defrah sighs in agreement, scratching at her prosthetic knee as her leg rests on the coffee table in front of her.

“We're the only two pilots with the training for that!” she protests. “And where are we gonna find something like that?”

“In Pensacola,” you offer. “What are they gonna do, tell us we can't have them?”

“I feel like I'm missing something,” Haman sighs. “What are you two yapping about?”

“He's plotting to use old surplus fighter planes to make the strike!” Carya explains.

“Hey now,” you reply, “in my defense, the American Naval Aviation Museum IS in Pensacola, and they do top-notch resto work. Load a few of those old girls up with some m-particle warheads and they'd never suspect that sort of punch.”

“He has a point,” Audrey offers. “We could use our stealth field to trigger a response, then have the two aircraft strike the Scanner station that's directing their suits. They'd be blinded, and we'd be laughing.”

“See,” you add. “Audrey says I have a point! Come on, it can't be that bad.”

Carya frowns. “I suppose if we drew off their defenses first we'd stand a better chance of surviving the trip... but still, it's been forever since I've flown one of those old things.”

Flying a Saberfish or older fighter is tantamount to suicide in this day and age. It'll haft to be one hell of a good distraction for us to get through the 40mm bofers.

So, what's a good distraction? Sending our suit out to attack a secondary objective drawing flak from the RADAR installation? It's the simplest, easiest method short of pulling a Blitzkrieg maneuver on all of the sites at once. Catch the enemy mobile suits in their docking cradles and free to steal by an angsting teenager.

We can shield the guidance systems. The problem is that Minovsky particles disrupt radar guidance, so it would be worthless anyway. Putting both shielded electronics and sensors capable of penetrating Minovsky interference on something the size of a missile isn't feasible at this point in the timeline. It will be eventually, but for right now it's really hard to project force beyond visual range. That's half the reason mobile suits are so tall, to give them a higher perspective to aim from.

Haman stares in wide-eyed horror. "Christ, I had no idea it was that bad."

"It gets worse," ALICE warns her. Suddenly the dying Earth is gone, replaced by what looks like a massive spreadsheet. Agricultural output, you figure. And the numbers don't fill you with a lot of hope.

"The figures indicate that by the end of the century agricultural output on Earth will only be sustainable at one-third to half its level prior to Operation British."

"Forget about political order," Emma mutters darkly, "we'd be likely to avoid mass starvation in some of the newer colonies with that sort of drop."

ALICE nods in agreement. "By my estimates, even with systematic and well-calculated rationing one seventh of the human population will be unable to survive. Quality of life for the remainder will be drastically harmed."

You can trust me on this, I'm a highly skilled geologist who was the chief consultant for the movies The Core and 2014.

The logical step here is to start hauling in Ivuna-series carbonaceous chondrite asteroids. They're on average about 22% water by mass. They also have significant quantities of amino acids and aromatic hydrocarbons. From those you can synthesize mass quantities of fertilizer. Then you take the rock and metals in the asteroids and put those to constructing agricultural habitats. Their design will be specialized for hydroponics, so no need for gravity to keep a soil layer down. That means they don't need to rotate, so they're much simpler to construct. You could probably make one as easy as extruding molten silica into a bubble and adding some structural reinforcement. Actually, given that we still have the Solar System Array in this timeline, that simplifies things pretty nicely. Place a large chunk of water ice inside a mined-out asteroid, seal the hole, and focus the Solar System on it until the things melts entirely. Gravity will cause it to form a spherical shape over time, while the presence of the vaporizing water inside will blow it out like a balloon into a hollow sphere. Then we just have to wait for it to cool and add in the electrical systems and plumbing. If we start now we can probably get a few dozen built in time. Might be enough, might not, but it's better than nothing.

That's really a good point, you think silently. Mars has hardly any atmosphere and no plan life, and yet Bernini plans to have Axis and its inhabitants live off the resources there. He even plans to build an army: how? How could that be possible? At this point in the terraforming process, they should just be getting around to encouraging microbes and mosses and algae to grow there, not food staples. And certainly not in any quantity.

"Well, he's so fixated on Earth that he'll see the Axis drop operation as a direct attack," Artesia replies. "He won't even consider the possibility that it's meant to keep people on the Earth as opposed to driving them off, and I guess in his current state he'd try to destroy Axis at all costs."

"And make the cascade event all but inevitable," Haman adds, turning to face Artesia. "Damn. You're probably right."

"What we'd need to do in that event is use Axis' thermonuclear engines to adjust its trajectory outward," Audrey replies. "Cause it to ricochet out of Earth's gravity well from its shallow angle and high velocity."

"And Amuro'd probably go after those engines to destroy them," Artesia replies. "As part of an attempt to stop the asteroid before it reaches Earth... and probably ending with it falling into the planet due to its decreased velocity."

"Cima would focus on the escort fleet," you point out. "That's where her battle lies, and as pragmatic as she can be she's the type to go straight for the jugular and leave stopping Axis to the EFSF."

Shit... none of that sounds good, and even worse every word of it sounds exactly like what the parties concerned would do. They're all in it to do the best they can, but it's the fact that their priorities and methods are so different that they'll all end up working alone. And in this case, you fear that'll be fatal.

"As for Titans, they probably plan on countering power with power," Karen finishes. "Probably with a superweapon of some kind."
