You are Commander Dominic O'Hara, and time has just stopped.

You were just reassuring Cynthia, one of the three young clone soldiers who's taken you as the loving older brother she never had, that you would continue to care about her come what may. That it makes no difference to you what shape her relationship with you may take. You were rudely interrupted, however, by a strong psychic presence that put your emotional moment with your little sister on pause.

“Touching,” the vaguely familiar, feminine voice greets you. “But I fear I need to interrupt.”

“Now, though?” you counter. “Really? You couldn't have waited five seconds?”

“Believe it or not, I do not make it a habit of watching everything you do, human,” the voice replies. Human... the fact that it felt the need to specify has some interesting implications, and the fact that it's bothering to ask first paints a better impression of it than the other beings who have forced their way unbidden into your life in the last few months.

“Would you speak with me?”

Fuck year, time to MOEAGARE.
I was so worried about the fate of SoZ, what with the kancolle quest and the holiday hiatus.
>>
>>37592879
"Do I really have a choice?" you ask.

"Always," the voice replies.

You sigh gently, wishing that you could rub your forehead but finding your body totally non-responsive. Hell, your mouth isn't even moving when you talk anymore: uncomfortably like a bug stuck in amber that's still alive.

"Fine, but make it quick."

"Very well."

Almost immediately you're confronted by a strange sensation of movement, and your vision twists and distorts. It feels as if your whole body has been sucked face-first through a bendy straw. Then the universe stretches out again, reforming into white drifts of snow and cold, gray stone steeped in darkness: a mountaintop under the light of a pair of alien moons, you realize.

Strange, it's not as cold as it looks like it should be.

"Where are we?" you demand.

"My mind," you hear the voice reply from behind you. Turning, you come face to face with a pale woman. Her serene gaze seems to take you in with some approval.

Only now you place the voice: she was there at the carnival when the Hollow Man took you, Haman, and Rosse.

Only, you seem to recall she had a beard then.

Hello again, nice place you have here.
>>
>>37593475
Since we're going full Fourth Wall, try and impose a little bit of your own psychic dickery. Conjure up a stool or something to sit on. I mean, what's the worst that could happen besides we start spontaneously bleeding from our ears and begin screaming incoherently, scaring the hell out of Cynthia.

"Odd place for a date if I do say so myself. I prefer the pool, you see, or a bar. Music and drinks, see?"

"Now, what did you want, precisely. And no double-talk, lawyer speak, or any psychically-charged-double-speak, I get enough of that from my superiors."
>>
>>37593475
Ah, so it was that ball of light with a voice.

"The Hollow Man hasn't manifested to any of my crew or me in a while. I'm guessing this means he's planning something drastic that you are concerned with? So, what can I do for you?"
>>
>>37593475
"I see!" you exclaim. "You were the ball of light!"

The woman chuckles to herself softly, a light and pleasant sound. "Yes, that was..."

"I almost didn't recognize you without the beard." The woman pauses mid-sentence, that smile never leaving her face.

"Like I was saying," she continues through gritted teeth, every word its own sentence. "That was me. I have brought you here to my mind so that I might explain things to you. Things which I would rather not need to take you into my confidence over, but are now necessary for you to know."

"Is it about the Hollow Man?" you ask, trying and failing to conjure up something to sit on and eventually taking a seat on a large stone instead. "I haven't seen him recently, so I kinda half-figured he was planning something big."

"Oh not at all," the woman insists, dismissing the notion with a casual wave of her hand. "You have simply grown better at keeping yourself and your crew safe from his interference. If he were in the room he could shatter your mind with a thought, but at this distance he can no longer harm you."

"Gee," you mutter, "that's really filling me with confidence."

"It is simply the truth," she continues. "Humanity has never been alone, and only now with your minds evolving into what you refer to as "Newtypes" are you beginning to take the first steps into the vastness of the rest of the universe. And your rise has been noticed."

"Noticed?" you ask her. "Noticed by... what, exactly?"

"By those that came before you," she replies. "More specifically, by us."

"And who exactly is "us"?" you press. "You've never really told me what you are, or who you are, or what any of this has to do with me and my friends."

"What is a Newtype?" she asks.

"Potential," you reply. "Potential that our species has only begun to reach, living and fighting in a dark, cold, empty freefall. Potential to understand and cooperate, or to dominate."

"Well spoken," the nameless woman replies. "And if you accepted the existence of other species besides your own, would you anticipate that they would develop similar capabilities over time?"

"Maybe," you allow. "There's an old thing called "Drake's Equation" on Earth. A mental exercise in calculating the rarity of intelligent life that rises, survives, and advances to the point where it can communicate across interstellar space. I guess we just need to add another variable there for psychic powers."

"Indeed."

"So you're from another species?" you press. "And you're contacting me why? And from where?"

"The where is simple. There are 'filaments' that run through the arms of this galaxy where gas is denser and stars more common. They are old stars, with old species inhabiting the planets nearest them. We are one such species."

You nod. "And so why do you care about us?"

"Because some among us," the woman admits with a faint sigh, "see younger races as a potential threat. Some seek to prevent you from ever leaving your home system, others seek to bend your kind to our will, and others seek to destroy you."

"I am contacting you now because our race's fates are due to entwine. It has already been set into motion."

>>37594807
"Humanity as a whole is a destructive species. We've already made our homeworld practically uninhabitable, genocided billions of our own kind over petty differences, enjoy building bigger, more destructive weapons, and yet still somehow manage to cling on and thrive even with everything stacked against us. I do not know if we can cohabitate, but that's not possible if neither side is willing to try."

The woman gives you a sad smile. "No. And I must say, you set a much higher standard than the others whose minds have come under assault."

"Have these other factions been recruiting humans?" you ask. "Is there going to be an outright attack, or will it be subtle?"

"There are some who whisper," she tells you, "promising glory to the ambitious. Power to the fearful. Authority to the self-righteous. None will interfere directly."

"And which side are you on?"

The woman shrugs. "I am among a minority. Our species has no right to interfere with the development of your own: and though we cannot help you directly, we may be able to help in other ways when the time comes."

"Now," she tells you, "I fear our time together is drawing to a close. I cannot keep you here much longer... if you have any final question for me I will try to answer."

She laughs in response. "I know none of their names, but you will know when you see them. Trust me on that. They will inevitably take up positions of leadership in the coming storm, and will be your greatest threats. Mad geniuses and charismatic leaders all."

A thought strikes you as her image begins to fade at last.

"What is your name?"

Another laugh, from somewhere in the pale void that envelops you.

"I have known you since you were very small, even before our kind heard the sound of your laughter."

Something presses against your forehead: a fingertip? Unbidden thoughts fill your mind with a jumble of images and knowledge, something that hovers just on the edge of recognition.

"There. You will need that in time, young one. And if you must know? You may call me..."

"I thing sho," you tell her, pinching your nose to stop the bleeding as she darts off into the other room.

"AN GED DE RESTU DE NEWDYPES!" you call after her.

Moments later Artesia dashes into the room, a small medpack in hand: she must have run all the way to the sickbay and back before coming here. She quickly pulls out a variety of tools, shining a light in your eye and jamming stypics up your nose while asking questions at a mile a minute.

"I'm fine," you insist.

"What happened?"

"I ran into another Ancient," you tell her. Wait, what?

"Wait, what?" she asks, just as confused as you are.

"An Ancient... one of those things that've been attacking our dreams."

"Did it attack you?" she asks, worried.

You shake your head slightly. "No, I think she's on our side... or something like that."

"What do you mean, 'our side'?"

You explain to her that the Ancient woman was telling you about her race, and the interference of some of them in humanity's affairs, and that there are some people in the Earth Sphere who are probably acting under their influence.

"Great," she moans when you're done. "Just what we needed, nutcases being driven mad by damn psychic aliens."

Suddenly the door opens behind her, but it's not who you expected.

"Doctor Null?"

The old doctor grins at you from the doorway, taking in your bleeding nose and wild look, as well as Artesia's confusion.

"So?" he asks, still grinning madly. "How was it?"

>>
>>37596871
"Okay, that explains some things, then. So, are you someone else she recruited, or were you contacted by another of the minority groups that doesn't want to destroy Humanity?"
>>
>>37596871
"Ah," you realize aloud, waving a finger at the Doctor. "That would explain quite a bit, actually."

"It went well, I think. So how long have you known?"

Doc Null laughs quietly to himself as he approaches you and Artesia. "Well, let's say I may not have been entirely truthful when you asked me why I recruited you as the pilot of the Lilium."

You grin back at him. "So the whole time, basically?"

"Yes, m'boy. In fact... this whole thing is how I acted on my meeting with that woman."

You frown. "But you're not a newtype?"

"No, and I didn't have to be," he explains. "The process nearly killed me, but then again inspiration can be as dangerous as it can beautiful."

"Who is she?" you press. "She was about to tell me her name."

The doctor shakes his head with a smile. "No, I think she did that quite deliberately. As serious as she can be, she can be playful as well I think. She may have just been teasing you while she had the chance."

"Teasing?" you ask incredulously.

Null shrugs. "Hey, they may be ancient aliens of inestimable psychic power, but they're people too."

"So what did she show you?"

We're boned.

There's three options I can think of if we're feeling up to it. Meditate on it. Run through some of our martial arts moves, work out, sit down and listen to some music. Basically, let it come to us.

Option two would involve us just sleeping on it. Most of the weird shit we've experiences comes through dreams or due to our emotional state or our companions emotional state. When we wake up, write what we dreamed down.

The third option would involve boning. We force our mind into hyperactivity with sex. Newtypes experience more while having coitus so our partner would also receive glimpses of what's on our mind.
>>
I just realized something rather ominous: She said that she'd been watching us since "before [her] kind heard the sound of [our] laughter". That kind of implies that Dom's Newtype awakening was a major factor in the Ancients' awareness of humanity. Probably they knew about is before, but the Devil's Laughter was what drew their attention so fully. Kind of creepy that we managed to scare not just humans but ancient aliens with that.

"There must be something to do. Why give me the information if I can't use it?"

Carya shrugs. "Maybe if you focus on it, and we focus on you, we can help you somehow? Combine our brainpower?"

"May be reasonable," Haman muses. "If these things are really advanced alien beings, their brains may be more powerful than ours. It could explain why one human can't manage it on his own, because it's simply too much data."

"If it's data you're worried about," Audrey counters, "we've got a machine on board that can turn a Newtype's brainwaves into machine code and an AI in our computers. ALICE could probably sort that shit out."

Both plans have their own merits...

After about fifteen minutes of planning, you find yourself in your quarters surrounded by computer hardware and Newtypes. Audrey, Artesia, and the Doctor are all watching over the process here, while Nina and Lucette are monitoring ALICE elsewhere in the ship. Everyone who can't help has assembled as well, watching in apprehension.

Even the bridge crew are watching over a camera feed to see how things go.

"Alright," you mutter, eying a jury-rigged psycommu headset Audrey and Haman have been working on for a few days now. "Time for me to plug into ALICE."

"Since this is your first time I will be gentle," ALICE replies cheekily.

"Good luck," Carrina tells you, her violet eye betraying concern as she pecks you on the cheek. "Don't you dare die on us."

Rosse shuts her eyes as you don the headset.

Sort of. The "aliens" that built the Turn X were actually humans, having migrated to another star system and diverged from the baseline due to transhumanist technology.

"Handshake established," you hear ALICE's voice say inside your head. "Man, kinda cramped in here. Loud too, how do you think?"

"It's just a song I've got stuck in my head," you admit.

"What is?" Haman asks nervously. Oh, right. She can't here ALICE, can she?

"Hey, what're you..." you think indignantly at ALICE as she erases the strains of Deep Purple from your mind.

"There, much better."

You frown and think at her angrily. "We're having words about this later, young woman."

"Can you find those thoughts now?" ALICE prompts you.

"Sure, one second..."

You feel a trickle of blood from your nose again as massive amounts of information stream into your mind, and then right back out into ALICE's pre-prepared databanks. Images flash by too quickly to identify, the lights in the room dim as ALICE requisitions a massive amount of power.

"Processing," she advises you.

"ALICE," you mutter. "Come on, now. No need to crash the ship."

You feel a strange sensation in the pit of your stomach as the Nagato starts to lose altitude.

"DEFRAH! REPORT!" Karen shouts as the lights go off and alarms start to blare.

"I can't do shit, Skipper!" Defrah shoots back. "Nav is unresponsive, we're drifting!"

"External sensors are offline, showing massive power fluctuations..." comes Catharine's voice, before Reiko, Miyu, and Noel's reports make it impossible to tell what any of them are saying.

"Processing..." ALICE repeats, her avatar fading from the screen as her digital voice warps.

"Processing..."

"Got it!" ALICE suddenly shouts in triumph as the lights flicker back on.

"Got control!" Defrah says as you feel the Nagato pull out of its slow, wallowing dive.

Karen glares at you through the camera. "ALICE! Report!"

"It's this thing!" ALICE replies as you pull off the headset and Rosse rushes forward to wipe the blood from your face. Feeling a bit woozy, you collapse onto your bed. Someone got caught underneath you, but you're not even sure who it was.

"Commander!?"

"I'm fine," you reassure ALICE. "Just a bit excited."

"Then you're going to die when you see this," the AI tells you, pulling up an image on her screen.

It's a strange, T-shaped object.

Audrey pours over the visual data with the Doctor and Emary.

"It's their technology," she whispers breathlessly. "They've already done it... and they told us how..."

"Told us what, Audrey?" Carrina replies from beneath you. The room is silent, waiting for her explanation.

"A building material that can respond to Newtype brainwaves," Audrey explains.

ALICE's avatar nods excitedly. "The psychoframe."

Nah, it's pic related. The psychoframe, a nanotech-based material incorporating Newtype interface technology down to the molecular level. In addition to just generally being a huge improvement over all other Newtype interfaces, under certain conditions it's been observed to create a phenomenon known as the "Axis Shock" (named for it first being used when Amuro deflected Axis from it's impact with the Earth). It's basically Spiral Power, this thing is going to let us alter reality itself with the strength of our will.

You know, I'm wondering now: In the original timeline, Char was the one to introduce the psychoframe technology to the world. There wasn't any mention of how it was developed, though. And towards the end of his life his character, which had been growing to a more emotionally stable state over the years, suddenly regressed back to the nihilism of his youth. On top of that, he developed an overpowering drive to force mankind to leave Earth for the stars, to grow and evolve as a species. I think, at least going with the meta-canon of this quest, that the events of Char's Counterattack were due to interaction with one of the Ancients. Char was faced with the existential threat levied against humanity, and that's what finally broke him. Maybe that wasn't Lalah's ghost he and Amuro were seeing.

We should still keep up biosenser resource. Of course that might have been something we got with the psychoframe tech.
>>
Meant to say research.

considering what kind of hax Kamille and Judau could pull with just biosensors i shudder at the thought of what they would be capable of with fully operational psychoframes

I want to make biosensors so that or non newtype crew members can keep up.

Hmm. I wonder if Dom's ability is to turn people into newtypes.
>>
>>37600928
That's not the biosensor that does that, you're thinking of the quasi-psycommu. And I'm pretty sure we can steal that from the Titans.
>>
>>37600985
Fuck yeah, INCOM time
>>
>>37600985
The quasipsycommu came from the Neue Ziel. We should be knocking at Anaheim.

No I'm pretty sure that I'm talking about the biosensors. If I remember right they let suits respond to pilots better.
>>
>>37601786
It only works for Newtype pilots. If you want Oldtypes to do it you need the quasi-psycommu. It's part mental interface, part AI assistant (though nowhere close to ALICE), obviously. Speeds up piloting responses and allows for Oldtypes to operate remote weaponry.
