'Ello, started running a Fairy civ not too long ago, I've since realized I've got a problem with writing far too much with too much plot-planning. As such I'm gonna put Fairy Princess on hiatus and try this again.

However this will be with a twist! Rather than a simple civilization game, this is Colonial Civilization, whatever race you choose, you will be an expedition from your nation's "Old World" to the new world. You will have extremely basic firearms technology, advanced metallurgy, and other things (with exceptions for races like undead, or ones that self-rely on weapons).
Who's ready to massacre some natives?
>>
>>37650498
Location will of course be where your party lands. First consensus with enough votes (arbitrarily decided by me) will win.
>>
myceanea, swamp ruins.
>>
I'll have to go with gnomes then for this setting. Jungle. Hack, burn, and reclaim it for the industry and the pioneers.

Hm. I liked how much there was to read in each update for Fairy Princess.
>>
>>37650768
Mmm, that's good to hear. I'm mostly struggling with how story driven I want it, my writing style lends itself a lot to some pretty stupid railroading, but at the same time I don't wanna end up with 2 whole threads of essentially setup for the actual civ game like in Fairy, I dunno. Thinking about it still.

Hope it was worth the wait

I watched Sir Pickeringworth III stand in front of me, looking out the front viewport of his rather magnificent ship. He turned to me, a meticulously kempt beard, tinged with grey lined his mouth, bushy eyebrows framed the ocular lenses he was always seen wearing, and his immaculate uniform, despite over five months of travel, still shone black and gold, with all the trappings of an admiral of the Great Engine. Looking at him then, I could never have suspected the events that were to unfold.
"You see that land, Mr. Heddlesbatch?" He asked, gesturing out the viewport with a wide sweep of his arm.
"This is the land that will truly expand the Great Engine's reach to the whole world! And I truly have been blessed by the Cogs to have been given the responsibility of the mission." Perhaps knowing I would be recording these events, he allowed a single tear to roll down his lined face, looking for all the world like a majestic, proud eagle.
We sat in the Admiral's quarters situated above the command deck, a finely furnished room filled with noteable antiques and replicas of famous Gnomish artifacts. He was, as you all know, the man leading our first colonizing effort. Finely distinguished in the wars against the Orcish Conglomerate and the Ursine-Elvish Confederacy, it was widely believed that no better man could have been chosen to lead the effort. I was there acting as a historian and record-keeper for the journey, this book which you are reading now is a composition of my rough notes taken at the time, eyewitness accounts from fellow expedition members, and after-the-fact studies.

Our ship had been sailing for five months at the time that the New World came into sight, it was the pride of the fleet, a several hundred ton behemoth of wood and steel, powered by the finest and most efficient coal-burners our Engineers and Magitekniks had designed thus far (though of course primitive by today's standards, it was quite impressive at the time). It carried five hundred-something of the finest of Gnomish society, from a small contingent of soldiers, to peasants searching to eek out a new life, to the finest Engineers and Magitekniks.
Prior to our arrival, several exploratory expeditions had been made, and they had plotted a course in such a way that our ship would land in the most fertile crescent of land they had come across, and in this case, it was a beautiful valley! Though I was reluctant, upon landfall, Sir Pickeringworth dragged me along behind him for the historic planting of the flag (which I might add, contrary to popular belief, has not been blowing in the same spot since the colony's inception, it's current location is several hundred meters west of the original spot, as it kept falling over in the sand). It was a grandiose affair that I, while very studiously taking notes at the time seemed to, did not actually care about. Immediately following the planting of the flag, the large drawbridge at the bow of the ship crashed down into the sand, effectively stranding us in the New World. All according to plan though! Over the next while the ship was to be desconstructed, and each room on board was to be unloaded and then plopped down in a suitable location. The construction was very clever in that way, the colony itself was already built, it merely had to be put into it's location!

After the intial bit of confusion and a rather rousing (if stuffy) speech from Sir Pickeringworth, we went to work. The peasants were sent out to begin cultivating a large patch of land, wherein they would work and likely live too. The work on that first week went swimmingly! The lower classes were in high spirits (largely because many of them were indeed former incarcerated criminals, and their records had been erased upon the undertaking of this journey), and as such managed to get a large portion of the fields done! It would still be another week or two before we could be entirely self-sustaining in terms of cultivated food and livestock, but it was a magnificent start!
(Farm Fields +50%)

Also over that first week, our benevolent Admiral had the engineers begin to bring down housing for the masses (though I suspect the engineers made a point to bring their own cabins off the ship first). Soon enough large suites were rolling down the drawbridge on steel wheels, and being plopped down in a nicely designed villages square (designed by yours truly, and in fact is still the center of that city!). Despite the progress, it took significantly more material than anticipated to ensure the houses were level (one rather dimwitted gnome-child suggested that perhaps them being level wasn't as important as our material supply, nonsense!), and doubts began to grow about whether we'd be able to create the whole colony solely from the ship.

As the second week dawned, Sir Pickeringworth seemed rather disappointed overall with the lack of, well exploration of this new world. He personally assembled a team of soldiers, and with a shouted "Tally-Ho!" left me to oversee the colony in his absence. He arrived back several days later in a smashing good mood.
"You see, Mr. Heddlesbatch, while we were out exploring along the edge of this so fertile a valley, we discovered that it is not only rich in life, but also in minerals! Look at this!" And he held out to me a chunk of the purest iron I had seen in my life! I leaned over and pulled down my highest ocular lense.
"Well, this has to be the most beautiful natural iron I've seen in my life!" I exclaimed.
"Isn't it just?"
And with that we had secured an iron mine. We had several professional miners with us that could hold down our supply for a short time once our boat supplies ran out, but we all agreed it would be wise to begin automaton production as soon as workshops were finished, though for that to truly work we would need a steady supply of coal!
The general layout of the valley was also discovered, where we were was the narrowest part, and it widens out to more clear land to the North East, and a forest to the South East. The sides of the valley are sheer rock faces with large tree cover where it levels out into ground once more. Several soldiers swore left and right they saw movement in the treeline at the top of the valley. 'Pfft' we thought at the time, 'Pure superstition!', we would soon find how wrong we were...
(Surroundings discovered)

During that week, the peasants continued, in high spirits, to tend to the fields, one more week and sure as the Great Engine continues to churn out smoke, we would be self-sustaining for food!

The next week was largely uneventful. The peasants managed to finish their fields despite heavy rainfall and rather dismal weather for this time of the year. Morale wasn't quite as high as it had started out but, thank the Cogs, we were self-sufficient!
(Farm Fields +25%)

I noticed that, now that our food was self-sufficient, we were running dangerously low on water! I quickly organized a system wherein we could efficiently get two weeks worth of water with one weeks labour (I'm not one to brag, but this system is indeed still in use in many parts of our Empire wherein they have not extensively drilled to the groundwater yet!).
(Water +2 Weeks)

A note on the writing. You may have noticed at this point that the population statistics haven't changed yet! In such a joyous atmosphere as the voyage wouldn't it have made sense for several little gnome children to be conceived? Well, yes, and several indeed were (one of my own was in fact, I was much younger and significantly more virile at the time). However, due to manpower limitations (a.k.a, I was the only censor). I could only provide a new census at the end of every season, so my statistics on population will only be updated then. Regardless though, this is the last entry in the first volume, which I will entitle "Landfall" (rather epic, don't you think?), pick up the next volume in which I will detail our first encounter with the savage natives of this strange new world!
