Welcome to Academy City. The time is afternoon, the weather is heating up, and the date is January 8.

You are Kyril Torikov and you were in a church. It was a derelict. Most of the buildings in School District 10 were. You had found some evidence that there were some clandestine groups of Code M within the district. Along with Kyouko, the two of you set out to deal with it. If there was one thing you knew about the Slumlord it was that she hated Code M. That hatred had stemmed from a past you hadn’t bothered to inquire about. All you knew was that it was the reason she had a different coloured set of Code M emission than usual and those other Code M had tried to do her wrong. You were also pretty sure that settling here without paying the proper respects was also another one of their mistakes. They wouldn’t live long enough to make that mistake again.

They were arrayed against the far wall by the altar. In their hands were strange weapons and in their eyes were determination. These black-robed nuns weren’t going without a fight. With their impromptu ally they probably had a good chance of escape. A masked vigilante stood with them. She was the same vigilante that had stolen your payday. Kyouko knew her by the name Grímsdóttir. Obviously there was some history between the two. Both you and the Slumlord had a bone to pick with her. The glowing cabal of nuns was more important however. Now was probably a good time for some division of labour. You told Kyouko to,

“Looks like you have a score to settle,” you told the Slumlord.

“Damn right Pops,” she elicited cracks from her neck.

“I’ll handle the trash.”

With that, you advanced on the nuns. Grímsdóttir raised a hand to stop you, only to be greeted with,

“Hey bitch, remember me?”

Then she was tackled through the far wall. It was impressive but also an annoyance. With a new way out the nuns started to retreat through it. You drew your sidearm and advanced, opening fire and emptying out mags as you went. There were over a score of nuns. The many that you could thin out now was better in the long run. Overall, it wasn’t that efficient a use of ammo. If anything they were probably counting on it as the five that stayed behind to shield the others. They fell slowly, riddled with bullets. The last one was not quite dead as you reached them. You ignored her last words as you stepped through the improvised escape route and into an alleyway.

It was a good thing you had a personal shield. They had prepared an ambush as soon as you appeared through the hole in the wall. Acting with near military precision, they kept up a bombardment of loose concrete and weapons. You replied in kind, rushing the nearest and punching her so far down alley her landing was a streak of red along the pavementThey backed away, now respecting the force you could bring to bear. Your barrier strength was falling and you weren’t taking them out fast enough. The few you did catch was only due to the fact the alleyway was narrow. That was going to change soon as your fight spilled on to the adjacent street so it was time to change tactics.

They were simply throwing rocks at you. Well two could play that game. With but a thought CADME’s full offensive suite came online. It brought clarity with it. The loose concrete and building material flew towards you and while some did impact, most of it stopped short. The biggest chunks were suspended in front of you like a shield. You didn’t have a use for a shield at all right now. The more they threw at you the more you could throw back at them. They were going to learn that such things were mere annoyances. Soon they would understand their role, their place. They were prey and you were going to hunt.

You savoured the moment.

They still threw things at you like the women they were and ran. It annoyed you. You put a stop to it.

It was only a step but that step kicked up some dust. There was force there, one that you captured and magnified. It billowed out and the rocks were returned to sender. All that followed were screams. They weren’t all of pain. Some of them were shouting names, but one was shouting commands. That would not do. You singled them out. They were a herd, attempting to bring you down in a pack, knowing that they wouldn’t stand a chance.

The few that were still standing broke and ran in. It annoyed you. They didn’t stand a chance with all of them together. What chance did they have now that they were so reduced? At least they wouldn’t be easy prey. You advanced. The dying prey tried to hinder you but their annoying yellow glow was flickering out. Each footfall raised a piece of debris that had brought down prey. The next brought it down with twice the force. You ignored the mewling of dying prey and exited in to the street.

They had retreated to the roof of a building on the far side. You weren’t in a hurry. They were cornered but you weren’t going to let them know that. From the droning of their voices they were obviously up to something so you had to,

It was transparent they way they set it up. Their yellow glow had intensified. Of course it would, they were cowardly prey, unlike the ones who they had left behind. It annoyed you. They weren’t even fit to stand and fight. Thus you had to bring them down to your level. It wasn’t difficult to do. The building was old. It was weak and with a snap it folded in to itself, a veritable house of cards. The deep rumble of rubble took its time to settle. You waited impatiently, slowly but deliberately pacing in front as the cloud of dust swept over you.

Few had survived. The rest had been brought low, buried somewhere within. They were tenacious. It was a good trait for prey but it annoyed you. Even with their mangled limbs and broken bodies, their spirit remained unbowed. You were going to make them kneel and you were going to enjoy it.

“VERDICT!”

You paid no heed to the distraction as the rubble shifted and rose by your will. Again the distraction called your name, and you spared the least of your attention as you turned.

It was Touma.

He bound towards you in full sprint, shouting. The distraction annoyed you. If his intent had been to distract you from your hunt then he had succeeded. Though he was tired, near spent, you could see it in his eyes as he closed in. He was planning to interfere. That annoyed you. No one interrupted your hunt. You needed to finish them now but you recognised that he was a danger. A force, a predator, in his own right, yet you weren’t going to leave this claim uncontested.

You dismissed him and finished the hunt. Even if he was a predator, he couldn’t steal your prey if they were already dead. After all, what was he going to do? Kill you? Even if he was alike, he was not your equal. Besides his look was perfect, it went from despair, resignation then it hardened. Those were the eyes you knew well. He was still coming at you but you wouldn’t let him. A single touch was all he needed. You remembered.

Your barrage shot off, scattering and surrounding him, gouging out his path. He was agile. The way he slipped to avoid the worst of it was smooth, almost conditioned. What he could not dodge he swat out of his way. Despite the rents and tears in the ground, the gouges you dug out of the concrete he kept coming. It annoyed you. But at the same time you had to give him your respect.

He had forced to back away. That one touch was dangerous you knew. It was his only weapon. You acknowledged his dominance in close quarters. It annoyed you. Retreating, backing away, that was not your way but you did not lose. It was a contradiction. You stewed in it as he lunged. His relentless, dogged pursuit only served to bring this farce to a conclusion.

“Is this what you fight for?” he roared, “Is this what you kill for? Or are you not even there?”

He had matched you step for step. The barrage hadn’t even slowed him down at all.

“Is that how it is? I’m going to bring my friend back out from that machine,” he cocked his fist back, “So bite the pillow, I’m going in dry.”

You were cornered and with a start you realised you had one more weapon to play. He should have known that being backed in to a corner only made the prey fierce.

How? How did he do it? Your mind was clear as it saw the blow coming. You knew the feeling. This was how you felt when you were prey. Right now, you were Touma’s you weren’t just prey either. You had hunted and you will still hunt. That was why you had to escape.

But there was nowhere to run.

You felt it first as the mantle of control was lost. All that power shackled and subservient to your will was gone with just a brush from his knuckles. Your guard fell abruptly. Then your throat tightened from the fist.

You were aware of coughing as your body went limp. CADME threw up a familiar nullPointer exception and VERDICT started to reboot.

Then your head snapped from the uppercut. It was probably the biggest chink in your helmet’s protection. There was a crack but another blow rained down on you as the two of you crashed in to the ground. He held you down with his right as he straddled you. His left grabbed a bit of rubble and brought it down on your helmet. It didn’t do anything but crumble from the blows. At this point he was just venting his frustrations on you. Did he have a connection to the Code M you had terminated perhaps? You didn’t know. All you could do was lie there and watch as he tried to crack open your helmet with broken bits of a gravel and concrete. With his hand on you, VERDICT was stuck in the boot up cycle and you remained mostly immobile. Even with your good leg, it wasn’t enough to push him off.

“I don’t wanna interrupt or anything but,” that was Kyouko’s voice.

The two of you turned towards her. Well, you turned your head as best as you could. Touma was looking at her unflinchingly. That spear in her hand might as well not be there.

“We done here Pops?” she asked, “Or am I going to have to save your candy ass?”

“Yeah,” you croaked, “We’re done here.”

“Good,” she replied.

The spear in her hand disappeared, replaced instead with a mobile phone. She called someone.

“Yeah it’s me. I need a cleanup crew on,” she searched for the street’s address before dropping the call and turning back to Touma, “So uh, I don’t judge but even I know Pops don’t swing that way.”

Touma sighed, getting off. Once VERDICT was fully rebooted, you too got up. Then he punched you again and crashing everything.

“That was for setting me up,” he practically spat.

Kyouko tilted her head.

“So what’s with the punching before?” she asked.

“I was too late, and he had to be stopped.”

“Huh?” Kyouko looked at the rubble and the blood strewn alleyway, “The way I see it, Pops does good work.”

“There’s nothing good about crushing victims of circumstance beyond all recognition,” Touma shouted.

“Pops is hardcore like that,” then her eyes narrowed at Touma, “And magic ain’t ever brought anything good to this town.”

“What if they were going to leave as soon as they could? There was no need for,” he gestured, “All of this.”

“I ain’t my fault they didn’t run fast enough,” Kyouko shrugged, “They ain’t playing by the rules anyway.”

He turned to you questioning,

“Who is she?”

“Let me introduce you then,” you answered nonchalantly, “Kamijou Touma, meet Toshino Kyouko, Slumlord of the Strange, de facto ruler of School District 10.”

“Damn straight I am,” she then ruined it with, “I’m the ruler and that’s de facto.”

Touma probably shared your sentiment as you shook your head slowly.

“Anyway, there’s another group of these magic-assholes in my district, you want in or are you gonna try and stop me?”

That snapped Touma back to the issue at hand.

“One condition, no killing.”

Kyouko looked at you as if Touma was off his rocker. Great you were,

In the end you let him come along with you. If talking didn’t work then it wasn’t like you couldn’t respond with deadly force or anything. Kyouko did grumble a bit but you had to wonder what made her follow your lead so easily. Not that you didn’t ask, it was just that you wondered what had happened to the vigilante Grímsdóttir.

“She ran like a little bitch,” Kyouko explained, “Said it was a pointless fight and that she was just dragging it out. Now I know why.”

She nodded towards Touma.

“She banked on Prince Charming here,” she grinned, “But even I know never to bet against you Pops. Especially not when you cleaned house last Christmas.”

“You and I are going to have a good long talk after this,” Touma said to you.

“What? Was dating Sparky that much of a drag?” you shot back.

“I warned you about setting me up.”

“Gaaaaaaaaaaaay,” was Kyouko’s contribution.

“I’m not gay.”

“Sure you aren’t, I’m sure Twitchy ain’t either.”

“Twitchy?” now you were curious.

“One of Kaoru’s friends, Shiro Kuroke or something,” she waved it off, “anyways, we’re here.”

Of all the derelict buildings they chose, this one had to be some kind of administrative building. You recognised the Code M that awaited. It was the chocolate bombshell who had been in Touma’s company a day or two ago.

“Well, speak fast T-man,” Kyouko commanded.

It turns out the cabal of Aztec magicians were perfectly willing to pay their respects to the Slumlord. They didn’t want to go the way of the Catholics. In fact, they were only here because they were hunting down a traitor to their cabal. Given the photo, it seemed Touma recognised him. Your database returned the grandson of Tokiwadai’s owner but apparently he was their infiltration specialist. Once he was dead they would leave but not before. Kyouko didn’t care either way and Touma looked like he was caught in a conflict of interest. It looked the decision fell on you, again,

The time is evening, the weather is chilly, and the date remains unchanged.

While you weren’t sure whether they were going to keep their word or not, it was probably the best outcome given Touma’s condition. He told you, “no killing,” but it seemed that it couldn’t be avoided either way. That was why you were accepted their deal for now. If you were going to kill them all afterwards or even lie to them about killing their target, then it was matter for another time.

“Hey T-man, you look like you know a thing or two about this Etzali dude that chocochick was talking about,” Kyouko remarked, “He ain’t your butt-buddy or anything like that is he?”

“No, well, I guess he’s like,” he nodded at you.

“Me? How is a Code M at all like me?”

“Both of you have a thing for a Lady of Tokiwadai, both of you are technically dead, should I go on?”

“Oooh, ooh, let me guess, he’s also a mob boss and loves blowing up buildings.”

Touma scratched his head,

“Er, not quite.”

“Still, it don’t feel right with those magicians in my backyard, if you can’t find this Etzali punk I’ll get Nayuta to get rid of them.”

“And I have work tomorrow too,” you sighed.

“No big, we just need a good enough excuse.”

“We’re not going back on our word,” Touma added.

“Hey, they do what they say they will and so will I, right Pops?”

“And we’re not killing Etzali.”

“What do they teach you in school T-man? If we don’t kill him they’re never going to leave and I can’t lie for shit. Pops might be able to but as far as the deal goes, he dies, they leave. We give him over and they might just decide to stay because he’s still alive because reasons. Gotta make sure the deal is tight.”

Touma had nothing to say to that as the three of you headed back to Kyouko’s place.

“Well this is my stop, unless you wanna stay for dinner?”

You were even amazed that she had a kitchen. Touma was more amazed that the two of you were forcing him to break curfew for a late dinner of all things. Besides you were sure Index could sort herself out for one night.

“No alcohol,” he had stated.

“Who the hell drinks that kind of shit anyway?” Kyouko agreed.

“She can’t get drunk,” Kyousuke elaborated, “Trust me, we’ve tried.”

“So what’s for dinner anyway?” you asked.

“Curry,” he answered, “It’s always curry.”

“Not like Chibi has time to teach me anything else,” Kyouko shot back before disappearing deeper in to the building.

“Wait Kyousuke I didn’t see you at school today, even Nakazawa’s been asking about you,” Touma spoke, “I mean Kyril I sorta understand.”

“They still have me on record?”

“They do,” you confirmed with a cursory search.

“Well damn, I guess I should show up every now and then. It’s not like I’m an internationally wanted terrorist or a career criminal or anything.”

Kyousuke was being sarcastic of course. He continued,

“Wonder that says about your judgement, friends with murderers and thieves.”

“And you don’t think it’s wrong or anything?” Touma retorted, “Why would you choose to do this if you don’t want to?”

“You’re right of course,” Kyousuke answered seriously, “It’s easy for you to say, and it’s easy for me to get out while I can but well.”

He gestured to you.

“Kyril’s not exactly his free and Sagara’s in it for the long haul. I’ll stay as long as they’ll have me.”

“We’ll all say the same shit,” Kyouko reappeared.

In her hand was a giant pot she held up like a waiter. You could hear the skin blistering and burning as the pot bubbled with fresh thick curry. In her other was a stack of plates with spoons. She grinned as she set the table.

“Pops hasn’t just done right by me,” she continued, “Now enough about that, dig in.”

The curry wasn’t too bad.

Man Touma reacted poorly to getting set up. Who the hell bashes someone in the head with concrete over a quasi-date?
>>

Touma is into big tits, Sparky is flat as a pancake
>>
>>40121508
>>40121530
also all that murder
>>
>>40121910
Touma should be long since accustomed to extreme violence, and while I can't remember taking him along for any heists he should at least be aware of Kyril's propensities.
>>
>>40121969
Doesn't mean he has to like it. Also, this is still pre-NT Touma, so he hasn't seen all that much violence yet.

Does Touma have CADME senses or something? Is there like a PING in his mind when we switch it on and he comes running?
