You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Okay, construction time. Finally. First, there’s a few little forts that architectanon created that will be built and will just be part of the usual army work. I’ll try to post a couple over the next few updates.

First, though, the Harrowmont expansion. Place got smashed. Here is Harrowmont right now, except everything outside the big Crown Wall has been razed and is in the process of being rebuilt.

Here is architectanon's first plan proposal. Basically to build a few massive bastions, enormous fortress walls, including some that stick out and make it hard to reach the moat with siege weapons, plus an enormous moat. Like, it's a lake.

This plan will probably cost about 150TBY per year plus 3 IEC teams and take 5 years. Living space increases by... I'm not sure. I think there's some confusion between myself and architectanon about population counts, actually. Either way, this is mostly defense with only a small increase of pop.

And yeah, that Siege Weapon on the right is stupidly massive. Probably going to build a mage tower there or something.

>next up, an expanded design

And here is the expanded one he designed, that attempts to squeeze in more population. Basically, it carves out two enormous steps about 80m above the terraces (around the same level as the Academy) for a stadium-effect. Not sure if people want to go in this direction, but it would enable expansion into the cliffs from the dwarven gatehouses.

It's kind of hard to do this sort of thing (especially as this has come up several times before and I've been in email contact with architectanon for months on this), so if there are any questions or things that want expanding on, ask.
>>
>>40146276
Looks good to me. Honestly we should proably start expanding deeper into the cliffs. Then make the outside a multilayered death trap of water and walls.

Anyway, two possible expansion designs. New ideas are welcome - I don't want this sort of work to impede people's ideas for expanding the fortress.

The non-stadium design will cost 150TBY per year and 3 IEC teams for 5 years. The stadium design is 150TBY per year and 3 IEC teams for 6 years.

>Discussion on Harrowmont. I'll also bring up canal expansion shortly.

Pic is of the fortress by the other side of the canal from Harrowmont. Basically a massive turreted fortress that sits atop the canal and controls access to and from Harrowmont.
>>
>>40146276
Other then adding some more defenses and maybe adding more to the walls I can't see much more I would want.

Can't let those angels beat us in the wall department after all.
>>
As usual I'm around too. If there's anything people want to ask.

First proposal should have an increase of 4800.

The second includes the former number and an extra 8400.

I'm not sure where a disconnect is, but those were both come up with the usual method. Either way, we'll sort it so those numbers aren't final.
>>
>>40146276
That seems like a pretty good plan for expansion. My only worry is that the expanded population areas seems rather exposed.
>>
>>40146404
They're about 135m up from the base, and somewhere like 80m from the inner city. And still surrounded by earth walls.
>>
I will go with the first one. I don't want too much population inside Harrowmont really, so not keen on going out of our way to cram more people.

You have pop growth for the non-stadium design listed as:
>Estimated Population Growth: ~7000 (2) ~3500 (1)

And also mentioned that you thought Harrowmont only had about 27500 whereas its population is 46000.

>>40146404
No more so than the rest of the fortress, given they're sitting a massive distance above the lower levels. They could be scaled by an inhuman beast, but so could walls.

Also, it occurs to me that we're running out of megaprojects. I did the numbers and the canal can be expanded to the remaining cities for free within a few years. That just leaves irrigation from the existing list, which is 3 IEC teams a province for a year (5 teams for Shropham provinces) for a small bonus to agricultural productivity.

Any other major projects people had?
>>
>>40146438

Well you're really going to hate the next expansion. I'm not sure how to fix that for you though, I've been working with the impression that expansion is where everyone wanted to go. So sorry, I suppose.

We build UP the mountain.

I... Huh. Yeah fuck, I don't know, I must have messed something up. Ignore my numbers, I'll get that fixed and emailed to you soon.

Assume population growth = a fair amount. Sorry everyone.

Hey Aspirational, I dont know if anyone has asked this before and I dont recall ever hearing about them (though dont hold me to that), but are airships a thing in this setting? Because if so we should think about making ports for them in our major cities, and if they dont we should seriously get on that.

Honestly other then expanding the Canal and adding more fortresses down the canal there really isn't much we really need.

I think I'll handle the canal expansion and irrigation myself, once I've got the time to work it out, year by year. Otherwise, there's no new megaprojects (airships and railroads aren't really possible, that's why you have a canal and dwarven expansion can't happen until later) so I'll also put the spare IEC teams to use making moolah.
>>
>>40146678
>Rail roads

Using what?

Though with the increases of the magitech power sources I can't see much reason why we couldn't drop a ten to fifteen miles an hour cart on a track. and stick it next to large production zones. That way the time taken to get to the canal is lower.
>>
>>40146512
did we build small forts at the canal tunnel entrances or did we decide against that?

Do we still have the arena that we held the Grand Tourney in? Could we possibly expand on that giving us a place in which to hold grand events on a somewhat regular basis (every 1 -4 years)? Something our allies could be invited to attend, doesn't necessarily have to be for political reasons. Would also provide a small, quick boost to the treasury if we make it a large enough event. Possibly something over several days?

So big design is a go. I do like the Colosseum idea, too.

MILITARY AND FOUNDRIES

Now, this is normally one of the craziest parts of the numbers threads. Unfortunately, I can’t really do this section like I used to. The time period is too long, the calculations too involved and last time it caused a ton of issues. Instead, I’m going to try to tease out priorities. This will have to work until I rework the system because, well, it’s kind of broken at this scale.

Basically, you have a pretty huge profit even with the ongoing projects. In fact, there aren’t that many expensive projects right now and you have huge income. On the other hand, you have a ton of production capacity. Less than a year into the timeskip you’ll be able to produce, per year:

25200 MMKs
2700 HMKs
1800 FMKs
27000 AAs
Plus 900 Siege Archers per foundry after they’re researched

Oh, and foundry costs will drop significantly in a few years making this all cheaper.

The real cost is still in salaries. If you recruit to match production then your salaries will go up by 1000TBY per year and your surplus will vanish quickly. You could instead equip your garrisons with the excess MMK suits and AA equipment. You could also consider constructing more foundries for other unit types.

To sum up, there’s three points.

1. Do you feel the need to expand production of HMKs, FMKs and Siege Archers (beyond just one foundry of the latter)?

2. How big do you want your professional military to get? At around 180k you’ll need to shut off your foundries to remain in surplus. With all foundries off, you could support more than 300k.

3. Do you want to keep operating foundries to equip your garrison once your military hits your desired size? Or do you want to switch them off and save the money or grow your main military larger with the savings?

Didn't we have plans to build a navel fort near Viteria? Did we actually build that, or did we decide against it.
On that matter, what do we have in the way of shipyards?
Also, have we expanded into those islands between us and Pharos? I recall that was a plan somewhen.
>>
>>40147107
The, "I had fun once, it was awful." Option.
>>
>>40147132

Also, we should just fucking build a huge ass foundry in Harrowmont already, we have the money and time to make it work, let's get on it.

Naval fort is built. You can assume a colony is set-up on the Taurine Islands, probably on the island that I get an email from somebody (can't remember who).

Honestly, navy is one of those things that I've never found the time to sit down and design, remaining mostly as a thoguht bubble I bring up from time to time. I think I'm getting closer to ironing out the specifics but then there's the matter of costs (and how it could unbalance things).

>>40147002
Yeah, the memorial is a free thing that will get added into the quest when appropriate (e.g. when Talon is wandering around with somebody).

>>40147173
Those aren't mutually exclusive voting options, anon. They're discussion points because I failed to work out a way to actually put the options to a vote without getting things wildly inaccurate (more so than last time, when I spent an hour after the vote crunching numbers in the spreadsheet).
>>
>>40147132
>1. Do you feel the need to expand production of HMKs, FMKs and Siege Archers (beyond just one foundry of the latter)?

Expand HMK and Siege archers. FMK are useful but we don't need a lot of them given their expense even while halved.

>2. How big do you want your professional military to get? At around 180k you’ll need to shut off your foundries to remain in surplus. With all foundries off, you could support more than 300k.

About 170K or so is good for me.

3. Do you want to keep operating foundries to equip your garrison once your military hits your desired size? Or do you want to switch them off and save the money or grow your main military larger with the savings?

Grow the main military higher.
>>
>>40147221
Fun fact!
The islands have chilies. Just cause.
>>
>>40147132
I dont really see the need to expand their production.

Having Military around 100-150k should be more than enough. For this stabilization period at least. We should spend our money on research, development and agriculture and stabilize the empire. After that we can turn to military again when we set our eyes on expandin and can actually expand without going into a huge deficit.
>>
>>40147248
My main reason for lower support of the FMK is that we already have great air control via the Arcane Archers+Siege archers+Foxes.

We really don't need a load of FMK for air superiority since in general the moment a foe goes up to the air they will turn into a pincushion and if they don't then the flying mage knights won't be much of a help anyway.

So personally I think we should keep them something like 3-4 percent of the army. With MMK taking 50 and HMK and the JMK taking most of the others.

Not counting the siege archers or Arcane archers because keep them high as hell.
>>
>>40147339
Actually, FMKs are exceptionally good against foes that do not go up in the air.
>>
>>40147315
>I dont really see the need to expand their production.

The biggest reason I see is the siege archers production is pretty low. We need them to be about 2000 per year.

Just because we need them in numbers large enough to really make a difference. Other then that I mostly agree. A little higher on the military in the last few years. though mass production of the MMK might work best.

That is produce the specialists until we have a set number. Then in the final stretch stop production and just pump out 20000+ MMKs.
>>
>>40147364
Yeah but if it's strong enough to hanlde a barrage of 2000K+ Arcane Archers+500+ Siege archers+ foxes.

Then it's good enough to swat all the FMKs out of the sky. So the big use for them is more after we gain air superiority due to the archers or when we need units moved quickly.
>>
>>40147391
This is especially the case once we gain Griffins and maybe Valkyries.
>>
>>40147391
You still can't see the flaw in your logic. Having absolute air superiority with archers and foxes doesn't make FMKs useless. It actually makes them much more useful.
>>
>>40147132
3
>>
>>40147465
Those are questions anon. Not votes.
>>
>>40147445
Not to mention their extremely varied have otherwise and the fact they are our only fully loaded unit presently since it was a League design we got.
>>
>>40147445
Of course they aren't useless. They are ridiculously useful.

I don't think we should have half our army being FMK or the likes though. We should have a decent chunk of them but only like 5 percent of the army at best. We don't really need to cover the skies if the foe can't pull out their own air Superiority. I'd rather have a lot of ground units who are then guarded by FMK after air superiority is gained and the risks of damage is low then the opposite. They're damn good but a specialist unit first and foremost.
>>
I think we should cap our professional military at about 150k troops or so, that should be more than enough for the next few years while we rebuild and once our economy has taken off and we can support atleast 300k troops we could look more towards expansion again.

FMKs are utility units. They're literally the fastest units you've got, making them brilliant scouts. Their flight means they're only vulnerable to ranged units. They can hold their own in melee like any other MK. Their explosive blasts are immensely damaging and they have greater range than AAs, and don't have the issue of potentially exposing themselves to melee assault. They can also use binding spells to weaken strong enemy units that they can't otherwise blow up. Finally, they can also do impromptu transport, moving units onto walls or into different positions far faster than they could do so otherwise (see the siege of Taour).

They're probably outdone in terms of raw combat ability by other units but no other unit has this range of options.

Anyway, votes.

Okay, so 1, 2, 1. I'll crunch the numbers tonight or tomorrow, combined with the economic growth and working out the true income from the earlier measures voted for. If HMK/FMK sizes become a bit crazy due to expanding production, I might bring up another vote on the topic when we resume. I might also do the same on army composition, particularly as the posts anon made earlier on the army composition kind of came at the wrong time and deserve slightly more consideration.

Sorry again for not being able to do this stuff on the fly, as it's just getting too unwieldy with my current system. On that note, consider the Battle Calculator to be a 'rough guide' and not a tool used to calculate battles simply due to how far it is getting from reality.

>>40147677
With the RSK splintered you're probably the 4th largest power on Gauron. Potentially 3rd as you might be able to best the League due to having Sylvian, Talon, Taira etc. Only Malataine and the Lords are a real threat, as far as established powers go. Darvui, the Farlou sorcerors and the archangels don't really count as they're only a threat because they can endanger Talon directly.

On a world-scale, Pharos is still super dangerous. But yeah, the quest has come a long way from a thousand soldiers attacking a ruined fortress when Talon had to roll to defeat a mage-knight captain in slightly fancy armour.

And we are getting the Anti-magic wards for the MMKs and the speed increase for the HMKs. One greatly minimizes what has killed most of our MMK. Being less armored against magic then the HMK in comparison. While the other increase the core movement of our HMK as well as fatigue use. That right there is a pretty major core increase.

About the only other thing we need is the HMK Anti-magic defenses and the Arcane archer boosts.
>>
>>40148087
Sorry man, just don't see it that way. Did not seem like a logical progression after all the talking we did
>>
>>40148125
Well you can't win them all. On the other hand I can't really see much we can upgrade after these are done.

The MMK will be capped out. The HMK will be one upgrade from capped out. About the only thing I could see base wise we could upgrade is if we looked into the FMKs or Juggernaught armor upgrades.

Weird thought. Sarah's kids could be well on their second generation before Taira's is even considered an adult. This is going to be havoc trying to give a true heir.

I'm honestly hoping at least one will just be some normal person. No powers, No magic. All he has is his brains, A fuckload of money and small armed guard.

>>40149078
Pretty much this. Talon is more the dictator god-king of the nation. His children are more just his children.

If they want to rule the empire after he dies they will need to make all the forces bow down to them or be so powerful as to make them kneel.

Talon doesn't want a imperial family that inherits by blood. He wants someone who proves they are skilled enough to continue his dream afterwards.
>>
Upon Talon's death there shall be a contest among all his children.

A Hundred Fox Volunteers shall come forward, and they will have their tails petted. For hours and days this competition may continue, for no child shall be declared the true successor untill they can fully convince 51 or more the the foxes to support them purely through the art of tail petting

>>40149196
He'll be the one to take the reigns of the empire should it ever come to it. Calling it now.
>>
>>40149233
The systems Talon is designing would help a lot really. If Talon goes then Undine and gnome goes.

So it basically becomes who can gain the Support of Mal and the Governors and the other imperial instruments, As well as Taira and them. Once that happens they are guarded by the Royal orders and the Nonhuman units so it's not like they would have to be a badass fighter to stay in command.
>>
>>40149257

Blasphemy. We should embrace The Life and dictate that we will be living forever already.
>>
Though thinking on it. The longevity research could be very useful in a few years.

I'm pretty sure Fenix would love to have access to that. Assume he is still alive in about 10 years.
>>
Another thing thinking on it. Sarah's children will probably have an advantage in a way because technically the Archduchess title passes down since it is separate from the empire in general.

You know given Talons Domain couldn't he just offer to let Fenix take a vacation there? For lets say 2-3 months. Then he can leave for the same amount of time with no real danger of death of old age. Then head back by the end.

I'd hate to have Talon lose an old friend.

Well, aside from the fact that staying in the Dominion only delays the inevitable (he'll still age when outside of it) there's also the fact that he'd be in danger in Harrowmont because he's a genocidal ruler and everybody knows. Talon might feel an odd kinship with Fenix but he's the bogeyman as far as most people are concerned. Heck, when he came along to the tourney he brought along a veritable army including a bunch of anti-mage elites.

It wasn’t often that you went into Taira’s room, with the ancient fox typically coming to yours, but it certainly made clear why she was typically referred to as an ‘empress’ by many others. Without a doubt it was the single most lavish room in the keep as well as being one of the largest bedrooms – you weren’t sure if it was a room set aside for the Darlesian queen or someone of similar importance. An enormous oval-shaped bed with drapes drawn around it sat in the centre and countless other items of furniture and opulence were strewn about. Aside from tapestries and silk carpets the walls on one side were covered entirely by bookshelves and a small reading table and pouf were set aside and stacked high with books, mugs and plates.

“I wasn’t aware you used this room so much,” you say, remembering it being much less cluttered last time.

“I didn’t but I’ve grown into it,” Taira says, leaning into the enormous cushion against the wall. “It’s not often you come here. Something special in mind?”

You ignore the lewd grin she gives you, and the way her foot stretches underneath the small table between you and strokes your thigh. Honestly, you much preferred Gauron furnishings – kneeling or sitting on cushions like this felt strange. You don’t quite remember Tsucchi’s Pharosian furnishings being like this, either. On the plus side, the fact that Taira was settling in was good news as it meant you didn’t need to tip-toe around her moods so much. She was an excitable thing but you always kept in mind that she could very easily decide to move on if she became bored.

“I just wanted to talk,” you say and she suddenly looks very serious. “Not quite that seriously.”

Her lazy grin returns and she leans against the cushion again, all evidence of her brief shift in mood gone. Obviously something was on her mind if she got like that so fast – the only times you saw her that scary looking were when she was talking about the threat that Sarah could pose to you years ago.

Bringing up the thorny topic of children shouldn’t be done hastily, you think. Instead you should get her in a truly relaxed mood, one where she can’t instantly shift into a threatening posture so easily. You ask her about…

>1. Her relationship with Vad’s kids. She certainly spends a lot of time with them.
>2. What she’s reading here. You expected her to spend more time bouncing around than researching.

“I’ve seen you in more meetings and I hear that you’ve been involved in quite a few other affairs,” you say. “I appreciate it, especially because your experience could be of help. It’s a change, though and I’m interested why.”

“My experience could be of help? That’s a change, too. One of the more exciting parts is that I don’t get that sort of respect here, normally,” she says, giggling a bit at the thought as she snatches up one of the little cream-filled biscuits on the table. “As for why, I just find it fun. There’s so much more going on here. The Alliance was never so busy and the Imperial Court always seemed so slow. Here everything is important or it wouldn’t be here.”

You frown at her earlier words. “You don’t get respect?”

“It’s not a bad thing,” she says, waving it off. “Respect isn’t even the right word. Maybe subservience? Hmm, no. Perhaps… obsequiousness. Yes, that’s it. In Pharos even Ren was always so in awe of me. They spoke poorly of my playfulness with men behind my back but hardly argued with my decisions. I thought it was just the way of things, being an old, powerful fox. Here that doesn’t apply.

“Instead I get sneered at by a helldragon as old as I am, ignored by an elemental not that much younger and humoured by a relative child who runs most of the nation,” she says, looking and sounding as bright and cheerful as you’ve seen her despite talking of otherwise negative events. “I have to actually try to argue if I want to get everywhere. Especially with all the followers – the keep is full of factions. Officers, aides and officials who will happily tell me I’m wrong or that they won’t do what I suggest because it goes against what their master tells them.

“It’s fun,” she finishes, spilling a little bit of coffee on her clothes as she bounces with the statement. Said spill vanishes with a swish of her tail a moment later. “Like the kits, and the new possibilities here. I haven’t felt so alive since I was warring with the other eight-tailled foxes so many centuries ago. It makes me want to start anew.”

Well, that sounds like your cue.

I decided to do 1 anyway because why not.

>1.

“Well, if you want to start anew I can help you with the ‘having children’ part,” you say, trying to sound somewhere between casual and enticing.

Taira merely blinks at you, her fluffy ears merely flicking up and down a few times. Something tells you that you failed to sound casual, enticing and sensible.

“You know, start anew here, have some children as part of settling in,” you say, feeling that that you’re going to have to get blunter as she merely stares at you. “Have children with me. Err, I’m going to stop taking the contraceptive brew and then it’s up to you. You can’t really be failing to follow me can you? Do I need to start talking in crude animal simile?”

If her tails weren’t continuing to shuffle around you’d swear Taira had frozen or that you had entered some form of frozen time. Time to pull out all the stops?

“Do you want to be a rabbit or a mare? I’m good with either simile but each will imply different things about you,” you ask her, not really expecting an answer.

“I’m a fox,” she says, her expression changing for the first time as she frowns in confusion.

“Yes but I don’t know what foxes breed like,” you say, before stopping as you realise what you just said. “Well, animalistically speaking.”

“I don’t think that’s a word and I’m pretty sure there’s not much difference between what we do in bed and what an animal would do,” Taira says.

“No, there is. Animals would be less inventive. Also, I’d be dead if I were an animal trying to keep up with you,” you say. “So, did you follow what I said earlier?”

“How many?” Taira asks.

“How many what?”

“Children.”

“Err, one?”

“Really? I was thinking of triplets.”

“I don’t think I can control that.”

“You just need to try harder.”

“I’m not sure the hardness of my effort will be in question. I just… So that’s a yes?”

“Why is that a question?” Taira asks you, tilting her head to one side in confusion as she puts her cup on the table and grins at you. “I suppose Sarah and Lynn are also interested – it’s not like you can just go off the brew for one person. Or maybe Sylvian…”

“Sarah is. Lynn wants children like a hole in the head. Asking Sylvian about children scares me so I’m going to pretend I’m not sleeping with her for a month or so,” you say, explaining your brilliant strategy. “I’m sure I can fill the month with the elementals. They’re not a worry.”

“Hopefully.”

“I’m not that magical,” you finish, at which point Taira attempts to prove otherwise. You’re not off your brew yet, fortunately. You don’t want to think about how many children that might have been.

You expected this would happen. It was inevitable once you had made your choice. The two of you would surely collide. Especially because you were dead certain he knew you were still screwing Noah, even if he’d never admitted it and Noah simply ignored you if you asked her if she’d finally told him as promised.

Honestly, though, couldn’t he have waited until after you’d gotten out of the shower?

“I’m pretty sure I know what you’re here about but this is far too awkward,” you tell the eight-tailed fox who just teleported into your bathroom.

“Don’t you usually get up earlier?” he asks you scowling as he looks away.

“Yes but I was training Sai until early in the morning,” you say. “By which I mean I was trying to tire her out as she’s been an insufferable ball of energy since Vad agreed to start teaching her how to use disruption techniques.”

That seems to settle Ren, who instead wanders into your bedroom. Hmm, that will only make things more awkward, you feel.

You’re right, but for the wrong reasons. You’d long forgotten the fact that Lynn tended to… excite male foxes. It was most likely the fact that she was showing no interest in Ren at all, instead focusing on getting dressed, that he wasn’t making an advance on her and was instead merely showing his interest. Just like any time you spot the two in the hotspring together, you ignore the urge to be a dick to Ren for leering at Caitlyn. After all, as this conversation would likely cement you probably were the greatest dick in his world. Instead you discuss matters in a private room, where Taira’s set aside from coffee and a light breakfast under a preservation spell, knowing you were up late. As expected, the sight of one of Taira’s delicious pastries doesn’t improve matters.

“I’m trying to decide what is the most unbelievable part of this whole situation,” Ren says as you tuck into your food. “The fact that the greatest and most powerful mystic fox alive - the only fox alive to ever achieve the pinnacle of our race and gain nine tails – spent decades learning to bake or that she decided that she really wanted to use her own oven.”

“That was a terrible metaphor,” you say. “Plus, you shouldn’t be surprised at the latter. Didn’t she indicate similar things with you?”

“No,” he says flatly.

Well, you’d at least confirmed that the problem was the noticeably pregnant Taira. It had been rather awkward explaining the situation to Tsucchi, particularly given how slow a burn the relationship with her was. She’d understood but Ren… Well, he was still noticeably cut up about a rejection a century old.

>1. Try to be comforting. Maybe mention how well things seem to be going with Noah, given she’s been rather interested in getting engaged to Ren.
>2. Wait for Ren to speak. If he wants to vent, then you’ll let him vent.
>3. Point out to Ren that this is his chance of being a close uncle. It wasn’t like you or Taira would want any kits to call him ‘Chief’ after all. Or that they probably would even consider doing so, being the children of you and Taira.

She's not sexually dead but she's also spent plenty of time without any male (or female) company. Anything like that with Aladria would only happen at player urging, particularly as she's not exactly the most open person.

Felix. Aladria wasn't interested as they weren't as warped as he was.

The silence carries on for some time, broken only by the sound of your eating. It’s a good breakfast, but so are most of the ones that Taira makes. They’re a rare treat as she usually can’t be bothered getting up early to make some but you suppose it’s not like she got up early to make this.

Eventually, Ren begins to rant, “It’s not just my feelings for her that are the problem. It’s everything else, too. The fact that she won’t come back to the alliance – every meeting of clan heads I have to reiterate that she has no interest. Or the fact that she actually swore fealty to you and happily serves you – even Wakato finds that hard and he’s spoken to her about it. Or the fact that the other foxes born in this fortress turned out to be completely unique and have been causing no end of problems, politically and personally. Or that there is no precedent for a fox breeding with a being that is potentially a stronger magical being and Taira is actively refusing to work with any of the other foxes.”

You frown at the last item, finding that particularly strange. “What do you mean, refusing to work with other foxes?”

“There are supposed to be other foxes involved to monitor the pregnancy,” he says, calming down slightly. “But she’s only letting Tsucchi near and that silver dragon of yours. I know that it’s common for dragons to mate with humans but foxes are different.”

“Possibly not,” you say. “But I’ll speak to her about it anyway. I don’t exactly want things going wrong, you know.”

“That’s not what I- I’m not attacking you,” he says lamely, looking away with a grimace. “It’s just that she’s important to us… the alliance, and she seems to care so little about everything I thought she worked so hard to build. It hurts a bit that it all seems to count for so little now. It makes me wonder if there’s any point to it myself.”

Ah, now you get it. Thinking back to what Taira had said, you understand his pain. She’d spoken of everybody being obsequious but they’d really just admired her. It’s not hard to see why – she’d united the entire race and given them a stability and future they hadn’t had. The problem was, did she build the Six-Star Alliance out of duty or because she wanted to? Honestly, you don’t think the answer was something Ren would appreciate even if it would set him free. You also don’t want to voice it, simply because part of you felt that it might be the last time you saw Ren. He felt fragile.

Instead you say, “I can’t answer that. I can tell you that you’ll soon have a little kit running around who will happily call you uncle when they grow up. Probably.”

“Probably?”

“I was never exactly good with respecting my elders as a child.”

“Ah. Also, ‘a kit’? I heard there were more?”

Your heart almost stops for a second at that, and you give him a desperate look which he returns with a wince. Something tells you he wasn’t supposed to share that with you. Oh boy, several kits. How wonderful.

>Aladria scene

It had been a while since you’d seen much of your vampire familiar, but she’d apparently finished her work with Tsucchi and was now happy to engage with you again. You suppose it should have been comforting, but having Aladria in your shadow again was creating odd problems for you. Namely the fact that she’d literally been in your shadow a few too many times.

“You scared Undine to death. Did you really need to do that?” you ask her over your morning coffee.

“Yes. I went for months without proper sustenance. It’s only fitting that I’m able to start my mornings the way that true vampires do,” she says, flicking her long, black hair behind her shoulder in an affected manner.

“You could have waited a few minutes rather than teleporting into my bed and biting me,” you say. “It’s not exactly draining but calming down scared women first thing in the morning is rather annoying.”

“Really? I imagine you do a lot of ‘calming’ of a morning, specifically of women and their emotions. Speaking of draining,” she says, completely ignoring your admonishment, “how are you keeping up with all these women when I’ve been drinking from you every day for a week now?”

“I literally regenerate all the time now. You’re going to have to try better than that if you want to slow me down,” you say, giving her a haughty grin.

She doesn’t respond and instead gives you a thoughtful look and wanders away. You don’t see her again until much later when you visit her room to get that novel she was reading for Sarah. Instead of being curled up under the covers as she usually is when inactive, she’s instead looking over her clothing. Nothing but lace and dark colours as far as the eye can see.

“Tsucchi wanted me along while she meets with some of the vampire representatives over this blood substitute,” she explains. “Do you think purple works better, accentuating my superiority and regal nature, or blue, to make the point of my allegiance to you.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear blue before,” you say, thinking back.

She gives you an odd look. “I wear blue most days. How can you…” she says, before stopping. “No, nevermind. SO, what do you prefer?”

>1. “Blue. Above all else, the connection to the empire needs to be clear.”
>2. “Purple. It’s nice to see you willing to step up into that role.”
>3. “Black. You wear it most of the time.”
>4. “No, go on, finish your sentence from earlier. How can I?”

>>40151206
Triplets is the most common number, with twins and singles about equally so and quadruplets not entirely uncommon. Typically, the the stronger the resulting fox, the fewer born at once.
>>
>>40151206
Real world foxes have 4-6 kits, so I guess magical foxes will probably have less than that but more than one.

So Taira having more than one will mean they are weak? With weak in this context still meaning demigod-like but less than would be possible.

Not necessarily. Vad's not exactly some super powerful fox and he had three very strong kits.

I will say that Talon's astral path will have an affect on the kits if not Sarah's children.

>>40151304
I might add this in just for a laugh.

>4 then 2 plus the White joke

“No, go on, finish your sentence from earlier. How can I?” you say, giving her an expectant look.

She simply glares at you. “Let’s just say I’m wearing blue right now.”

“Oh, are my eyes not working too well today?” you ask, being intentionally obtuse.

“It’s a comfortable colour. I like it,” she says, ignoring you.

“I thought that was black? Do you not wear that all the time?” you ask her ‘innocently’. “I’d like to say I believe you, but a wise man always seeks proof.”

>Exceptional success

“Proof? Of course you can have it. Of course, the brave man who would claim to be my master would not merely wait for his servant to hand them such proof but would instead find it under their own power,” she says, with a toss of her head and a glare at the wall. “You believe me but must find proof before you can judge my truthfulness. I await your triumphant return with said proof.”

Well, that was certainly a challenge. You already know what she means, after all. Not wasting any time, you take a step forward and hike her dress up to reveal the blue she’s wearing. Also, to reveal her trademark intimidating look – it almost looks like she’s pitying you.

“Did you enjoy that?” she asks you flatly.

“I enjoy winning, so yes,” you say, not letting go of her dress. “A comfortable colour was it?”

“Supplying comfort is practically your life’s work, is it not? All those hard-working warrior women you keep on their feet,” she says, her voice biting.

“I’m glad I got my feelings across. Say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much of your skin,” you say, voicing an idle thought as you refuse to back down from your feisty familiar.

“Congratulations, you’re only the second man to see so much. Do you have a ring for my finger? Or is it perhaps the type that you give to me to put around a different limb?” she spits back.

“The second? Perhaps you should consider white for tomorrow then. To represent purity,” you say.

Surprisingly, she looks thoughtful at that, forgetting to jab back in this little moment. Not that you let up for a second – you’re expecting her retort any second.

“Purity in spirit is what counts the most, so I suppose you’re right. I don’t actually have anything in white, however,” she says, frowning. “And if I’m already going to be wearing blue then…”

“Purple. I appreciate you stepping into that role, after all. It’s a hard one but somebody needs to fill it,” you say.

“Yes, hard, role,” she says, glancing at you with a flat look. “Are you speaking of yourself now or are you going to let go of my dress? I think you have a certain archduchess mewling about your absence in your room and I still need to choose my clothes. Without your help, as comforting as your physical offer is.”

One day, you’re going to make her back down. But today is not that day. Still, you found it interesting that she thought you would know she was wearing blue. That doesn’t seem like the sort of thing she’d forget, which makes a man wonder.
