Opening your eyes, you're greeted with the sudden illumination of the platform you're standing on. Beautiful white birds flying out from the center, revealing the ground beneath you. It's bright, so bright, but the light doesn't blind you. There's an image on it, a woman, you think, but it's so fuzzy that it's hard to make out any details about her.

"Power lies within you... great power... if you can pull it forth, it will protect you"

With a soft whoosh of noise, platforms start to rise around you, intricate, beautiful stone carvings on all of them. Resting atop of them all are weapons, different types, a sword, a staff, and a shield

"The power of a warrior, bravery and strength are yours with this blade of ruin." Hefting the blade in your hands, it’s heavy, but if you take this, it'd be hard to imagine that any enemy could really stand up to you. This sword is a masterwork.

"The power of a protector, the ability to protect your friends and keep away foes. This shield can provide that and more." Strapping the shield on your arm, you're immediately filled with a sense of safety. Rapping your fist off of the metal, you're rather pleased with how solid it feels, with this thing, you could probably take a hit from just about anyone and live

"The power of a mage, fortitude of mind and the intellect to appropriately use it. This staff of wonder will help you with that." Clutching the staff, your mind feels as though it's being bombarded with knowledge. The elements are at your fingertips, you could learn everything. The mind is too strong of a weapon to waste.

You slowly approach the sword reaching out, you slowly grasp the hilt of the floating weapon. “The sword. A weapon, through and through, built for nothing other than destruction of others, no matter the intention behind bringing that destruction. An interesting choice… we shall see what you do with this power.”

The platforms silently sink back into the stained glass floor below you with a series of glowing blue lights. You glance around, staring into the darkness about the pillar, gulping as you find nothing.

Without warning, the pillar below you vanishes into thin air. You fall and fall, darkness in all directions, encroaching in on every side, filling your vision.

Your eyes are flooded with light suddenly, as you hurtle towards another pillar face first, only for some unseen force to pivot you in the air, slowing your descent. You land again, the sword still grasped.

“You have potential child, but first we must see what it is that truly lies inside your heart, answer truthfully, for in this place, you can hide nothing…”

You respond truthfully; that you prefer the calmness of dusk, enjoy harnessing power so that you can do as you please, that deep down you fear being alone and thus strive to form bonds in your life, that you’d never steal from your family, and that you prefer a plan to be straightforward, to the point.

Silence echoes back at you for a time, as if the very universe is considering your words in thoughtful silence.

You startle, nearly dropping the sword, as you receive a response. “I see that you are large of heart, even if you can be selfish at times…. but fear not, if you follow your instincts, I am sure you will lead a life worthy of your destiny…. or, at least one of your many possible destinies, for there yet lie other paths you could take, should your heart ever change.”

“But leave aside your thoughts for now. Perhaps you should become acquainted with your weapon? Swing it a few times, test your strength.”

The voice hasn’t steered you wrong yet, grasping the haft with both hands and hefting it to what you think is an appropriate stance, it’s rather surprising to feel that the blade is much lighter than it was a few moments ago, your limbs moving with an ease you don’t feel that you’ve earned, having never swung an actual sword in your life.

“Good. You have the makings of a true warrior inside of you. Perhaps it’s best to see how you react under stress, however.”

With that, the voice fades again, leaving you alone. The lights shining up from the glass below glows brighter, yet inky dark pools well upon it, seemingly flat upon the surface, until they rise, forming a small creature, roughly a third of your size, yellow eyes peering out from a featureless face, hooked antennae twitching, claws swiping the air.

“Don’t be afraid, keep calm and believe in yourself. The dark can be fearsome, but your light is strong enough to resist it, keep it burning strong, and you have nothing to be afraid of.”

You raise the blade in an offensive stance, as one of the inky creatures starts to dash towards you with haphazard steps.

Your arms move on their own, as the creature leaps at you. You slice it in half in a single blow, the separate halves both evaporating into clouds of oily smoke. Two more rush at you, meeting a similar fate, you almost feel bad, if it weren’t for the claws, they’d look pretty cute.

Still, they mean you harm, you jab at one with the tip of your weapon, keeping it at bay, before leaping back and swinging the sword overhead with both hands, bisect vertically, straight between its’ glowing golden eyes, before finishing off the last one.

You rest the sword against the surface of the pillar below, catching your breath, as the last clouds of smoke trail off into the blackness of the void around you.

“You have done well, very well indeed.” You pull your hair back into a ponytail, as the voice continues, “Now, ascend, and face your true foe in this place. Let us see how you cope.”

As the words fade out, another pillar rises out of the gloom, higher than the one you stand on, a semi circular staircase connects them, gleaming every colour of the rainbow.

You clutch the haft once more, steeling yourself, you near the staircase.

Upwards lies the next pillar, a bright light shining down on it, from somewhere unseen above. To either side of the staircase lies nothing but pitch black, something in it calling to you, inviting you to join it.

You stare outwards, calling out into the dark, “What’s waiting for me if I go up there?”

The voice doesn’t return, no answer to your question, it seems as though this is one choice you just have to feel out and choose on your own what might be best.

The stairs quickly pass by, lighting up brighter around each footstep, as you rest the flat of your blade against your shoulder. You reach the top of the stairs, strolling out into the centre, as the stairs fade from sight, leaving you alone here.

“Now, we shall see just how bright your light can shine. But remember… with every light, comes a shadow, lurking in the corners…”

You catch it out of the corner of your eye, your own shadow extending outwards, growing larger then it has any right too, moving independently, as you spin on the spot. Instinctively, you lower your blade and try to plunge it at your shadow, but the the tip glances off the surface of the glass.

Your weapon rebounding gives your shadow time to rise, forcing itself out of the second dimension and into the third, towering over you in height, it’s own blade twice the length of yours, yet razor thin, where yours is weighty and thick.

The oily smoke comes coiling out of the dark, clinging to your shadows skin, forming into the shapes of spiky metallic armour, coating the other you head to toe in pitch black protection, even coating the sword she carries, bastardising it from your own.

Determined to win, you heft your own sword, as your shadow swings her blade down at you.

Your movements are swift and precise as you heft up your blade to block the incoming attack of your shadow, managing to stop her before she can slice you in two. With how hard she’s pushing against you though, you feel like this sickly looking doppleganger might be stronger than you are.

Struggling against your foe’s greater strength, your legs are starting to shake as you try to force her off of you. She pulls back, and lightning quick hammers another blow against your blade, forcing you back a step.

Off balance, you desperately block as she brings a straight stab towards your chest. You manage to get your blade up, deflecting hers away, receiving a shallow cut as her sword slices through your sleeve, cutting your upper arm.

Powering through your pain, you take advantage of the opening she left after you parried her, jumping and slamming the pommel of your sword into her helmet, it’s her turn to go on the retreat, as you score a slash directly across her chest plate, before she manages to get her guard back up, blade held warily, like a fencer, twitching with each movement of yours, ready to deflect.

You take advantage of her hesitation, rushing in, you rain down blow after blow against her, throwing all your strength behind each blow, you force her to take a step back, then another, pushing her towards the edge.

She’s giving ground surprisingly, unable to keep up with your unexpected burst of speed and strength. You give a savage growl as you force her to take another step back, then another, you make sure to maintain a cool head, that she’s not baiting you.

A sharp crack rings throughout the void as her sword snaps in half under your series of blows. She seems as nonplussed as you are for a second, as your sword sails through hers, biting into her armour. You drag it downwards in a hurried slash, giving her a savage cut, as she stumbles backwards.

Balancing on the very edge of the pillar, she looks at the two pieces of her sword, one in each hand, before nodding to herself. The two halves melt and condense into dark spheres, which she quickly lobs at your feet, nimbly, you leap back to avoid them, only for the two spheres to splash on the floor in inky puddles, before reforming as the yellow eyed creatures you fought earlier.

You switch your attention to cutting the two of them down, one slice each, but that gave her time to regain her defence. Tearing the arms off of her armour, she merges them all into one ball of oily black, before it condenses as a copy of the shield you had chosen not to take earlier.

She bangs a fist against it, taunting you forward, to rush her.

Rush her, attack from an upward angle to force her to block up and obscure her view. Then circle around and stab around the shield, maybe in any potential unarmored spots from the arm that she ripped the armor from to form her shield. Aim for armpits or maybe even the arm itself to disable it.

You’re not going to fall for her goading tricks, you stay your distance, feet moving delicately, precisely, you keep her at bay every time she tries to advance with a cut aimed at her free arm, of her head.

All the while, you keep up a flurry of attacks, your broadsword doesn’t exactly seem built for jabs, but you’re not going to let that stop you. No doppelganger is going to get the best of you. You drive your blades tip around the corners of her shield, stabbing at the darkened exposed flesh of her armours, concentrated jets of the same smoke bursting from her cuts.

She tries to dash inside your swing, slamming her shield into your chest, but you shrug it off, pommel bashing her in the head again, she staggers back and you cut at her shield arm once more.

The entire limb comes loose, bursting into a thick cloud of smoke, as your shadow stares at her stump nonplussed. Without missing a beat, it uses its remaining hand to rip it’s helmet off, the lump of metal extending outwards into the shape of a pitch black rod, crowned with a heart crossed with a dark red ‘X’.

She leaps backwards, well out of your reach, all the way to the other side of the pillar. Her exposed face contorted in silent pain, she levels her rod at you, and a spear like icicle forms in the air, blasting right at you.

You can tell she’s on her last legs, hefting the sword in hand you charge, as she follows the ice spear up with a ring of fire that she hurls in your direction, spinning in a circle as it flies through the air.

I'd prefer something like the far left being one of the final or close to final forms. Understated, yet still ornate. Maybe with some almost vestigial bits on the end of the blade to suggest that it's a keyblade, or perhaps some stuff going on with the crossguard or upper handle.

Call me contrarian, but I'd like to see our weapon be more on the utilitarian side rather than the overly flashy and somewhat overdesigned types of weapons that you see with keyblades.

You bash the icicle spear out of the air with your blade, then leap through the centre of the ring of fire, bearing down on your shadow.

With one final yell, you slash, the rod offering nothing in the ways of defence, you cut your shadows head off her shoulders, your own face bursting into a cloud of smoke, just like everything else had done, soon followed by her armour, then the rest of your copy’s body.

Exhausted, you fall to a sitting position, laying the sword down for a moment, you stop to get your breath back. Killing yourself really takes it out of you, even if it was a nasty shadow version.
The light on the platform dims, but the light from below, the myriad of colours under the stained glass glow brighter than ever. Curious, you look around, wondering what the mysterious voice thinks.

It takes another minute or so, but the deliberation finally comes.

“You have indeed proven yourself a mighty warrior, even if your tactics in combat are rather…. savage, if effective. You are to be commended on this victory. Few reach this place, and fewer still succeeded in a similar fight.”

A smile crosses your face, as you wipe the sweat from your brow.

“Still… this victory is only one of many that you may need to accomplish. There will be many trials in your path. But for now, enjoy what time you have. Relax, relish time with those you hold dear.” The voice starts to fade. “For even the brightest of lights can only do so much when ill equipped. Now… this temporary place is starting to loosen and tear, you will wake soon, I would think. I expect great things of you child. Oh and…. good morning.”

You bolt upright, hearing two sets of fists pounding on your door. You glance around, heart still going a mile a minute, sweat drenching your body, you glance around for your weapon… but it’s gone. You flex your fingers, still remembering the heft of the sword in your hand.

The fists pound harder. “C’mon, wake up sleepybones!” The expected male voice calls.

“The ice cream stores restocked, c’mon, we gotta get in before all the good stuffs gone!” The feminine one follows.

Groaning, you force yourself out of bed, picking up stopping by your mirror to fix your hair, you see the same old picture taped to the frame, the three of you, bruised up after your first attempts at skateboarding around town. It didn’t go great. ‘Age 7’: Ranos, Tala and of course, you, little Vasi, bleeding from the chin, elbow and both knees. Man, that was a whole seven years ago.... You feel old now.

Shrugging a proper jacket on, you open the door, Ranos practically falling in after nearly beating the door down. Staggering into the room, Tala grabs him by the shoulder and stops him careening into you.

The hook-end could easily accommodate two "teeth" for a keyblade while not really interfering with its intended function. Although I do realize that keyblades are swords for all practical applications. I dunno why, but it just really bothers me that they can use a key to stab and slash things even though I know it's all magic and shit.

Still trying to blink yourself awake, you give them both a scowl, “Why’d you two have to wake me up?” You whine.

Recovering from his near collision with the floor, Ranos chuckles, stepping forward and shoving you in the shoulder, “You sure you’re awake?” He grabs you by the chin and squeezes your cheeks, “Like Tala said, ice creams back in stock, we gotta get in on that, before every other punk in town buys all the good stuff out.” He steps back, rubbing his stomach longingly, “Oh man, I can almost taste the sea salt from here.”

Still in the doorway, Tala rolls her eyes, “I wanted to head there first, but this idiot insisted we get you first.” Her cold mask slips for a second, a smile slipping through. “Of course, now that we’re here, seeing him almost trip over has its merits.” She licks her lips slowly, “Although, now he mentions it, I could go for some sea salt too. It always sells out so quickly...”

Personally, you can’t stand the flavour, who puts salt in ice cream? You were always more of a good old fashioned vanilla sorta girl. You see Ranos has his collapsible struggle staff slung across his back though, his handle suited for adapting to pulling off unusual tactics, you think he might have modded the shaft of the mock weapon to rotate so he can deflect strikes.

Tala’s brought hers too, the heavy guard grip suited well for her strategy of keeping up an iron defence, one that no one sees coming from a girl as slight as her.

Yours on the other hand, well it’s pretty much just the basic model, you’ve tried out the ones your friends use, but they just don’t feel right compared to the straightforward offence that comes from your classic model.

“Yeah yeah, let’s go get yer ice cream, but afterwards we’re having a struggle showdown, I’m itching for a good fight today.” You concede to their demands for a frozen treat, grabbing your wallet from the nightstand where you had left it the previous day.

Cracking it open and taking a look inside as the three of you start to leave your house, it’s hard to hide the grimace that shows up. You’re seriously starting to lack in the funds department, and unless your allowance is suddenly kicked up, that’s probably not going to change unless you can snatch a part time job.

Picking up your struggle bat from it’s spot near the front door, as you sling it over your shoulder, your brain instantly compares it to the sword that you used in your dream earlier. Compared to a ‘real’ weapon, the bat really doesn’t feel all that heavy anymore, so either you’re really starting to get used to swinging this thing around, or you’re actually getting stronger.

Either way, this means it’ll be easier to knock Ranos around when he gets fired up.

One quick trip to the ice cream shop later, and your two best friends are now munching on that strange light blue salty crap that they have the gall to call ice cream, while you’ve got a vanilla cone for yourself. Just what the doctor ordered on a day like this, not even noon and it’s already so freaking hot outside that you feel like you’re going to melt, let alone the ice cream you’ve got.

Still, the path down to the ‘Struggle area’- that being an abandoned lot where the three of you like to hang around, along with a few other kids- you dig into your cone, savouring the sweetness of the vanilla, “Anyone think that the ice cream stores’ over charging? Guy’s a total scrooge if you ask me..” Ranos shrugs, “Oh well. Vasi, you know, you really do have awful taste, not appreciating a delicacy like this.” He waves his ice cream in your direction, until a lump melts off, splattering in the street.

He frowns, as you and Tala share a short laugh at his expense, before he bites the rest of his down and runs ahead, drawing his ‘weapon’ as he runs.

“Idiot…” Tala sighs, maintaining a lesiurely pace, slowly licking hers, as Ranos tears around the final corner. She quirks her head, frowning as she listens. “Do you hear that?” You listen closely, but the wind is blowing whatever your supposed to be hearing away. Rolling her eyes, she stuffs as much as she can in her mouth, wincing as she bites it off, then throws the rest of her stick down, drawing her Struggle weapon. “Ranosh ish already picking a foight” She manages to tell you through a full mouth, before sprinting off.
