Let's do this.

You’re senses have gone numb, you feel like you’ve been floating an ocean of pure black for an eternity, hear nothing, smell nothing, you see nothing but black. You can almost feel your mind starting to slip as you coast through the darkness on the other side of that billowing heart shaped hole in the wall. And yet, it feels like no time at all has passed, leaving you to stew with your own thoughts, fingers clenched about the solid hilt of whatever it is in your grip.

A break in the monotony of black comes as you think of your friends, Ranos and Tala, the thought of your friends coinciding with a pulse of light, bursting from the thing in your hands.

You almost feel blinded as light floods back into your sight, forming a transparent golden white bubble around you for a few moments. “What’s going on?” You demand, peering out into the dark. Suddenly you have a sense of determined movement, downwards and forwards, at great speed.

The bubble bursts, just as suddenly as it came, but this time you fall with an actual sense of gravity, landing on solid ground. The weapon in your hand still gives a faint glow, illuminating a small circle around you, lighting up the purple ground below you, jagged purple and black rocks jutting out in places.

You take a few moments to actually inspect your new weapon, curious what it is, how it works… a long shafted weapon, like a club, but with spikes jutting out, then a protrusion at its point, coloured in it’s own shades of light purples and greys, the slight golden inlays the parts giving out the light bathing you. Even a chain extends from the handguard, hanging low. “What is this thing…” You ask all the nothing around you.

As interesting as the weapon looks, the way it feels is even more strange. For as large as this thing is, it barely weighs anything, just enough to make you realize that it’s something that’d be dangerous if you just started to swing it around willy nilly. Minus the lack of a blade, it almost feels just like the sword from your dream with the shadow monsters.

The rest of the world is still silent, nothing makes a peep, but you get the sense that things are moving in the dark now, beyond your vision, off to your left

Our other Keyblades will probably have different niches that they fill.

We could have a short and broad one, a long and slender one, a heavy blunt one, or even a two-handed blade.

Maybe when we unlock our Super Mode, we get the ability to cycle through all of our Keyblades in rapid succession.

You’re already on edge after everything that’s just happened, the monsters, the witch, Tala and Ranos, you’re not gonna give whatever the thing over there is a chance to get the jump on you, strike while the iron is hot and don’t let up.

With a battle cry of pent up anger and frustration, you grasp the weapon that you have with both hands and charge forth towards the figure, or figures, that are hiding within the darkness, you aren’t going to let yourself be taken as well!

Using one of the jagged pieces of rock as a platform, you launch yourself through the air, intent on bringing the weapon right down on whatever it is that’s over here. So blinded by all of your emotions, and the adrenaline that you have pumping through your veins, you don’t actually notice that this in fact isn’t a monster until your weapon has met her’s in a face off. The thing black metal blade struggling against your own as she fends off your assault.

Despite the lithe frame this woman has, you can tell that there’s quite a lot of strength in her, as once the surprise of your… surprise attack wears off, she’s quick to force you back and get a bit of distance.

“Wait, please, I don’t want to fight you!” The woman’s soft voice claims as she looks across the distance there’s now between the two of you. Her eyes noticeably glancing at the weapon in your hand with extreme interest “You have one too..”

She lowers her own, smiling gently. “Call me Aqua.” She tells you, laying a hand over her chest, “I’m a Keyblade wielder, like yourself.”

That quirks your interest, “Keyblade?” You glance at her weapon, then your own, “That’s what this thing is?”

She tilts her head, a look of surprise crossing her face, “You don’t know what is is?” She seems shocked, before holding hers out “Then… how did you get yours?... You didn’t take it from someone, did you?”

You immediately shake your head at her question “No I didn’t! It just kinda… came out of nowhere, I heard the voices of my friends and then a really bright light blasted out of my hand, and it was just there. Next thing I know, that mean Dragon Lady threw me in here.”

Aqua seems concerned over that, “Dragon Lady? Tell me… did she wear purple, and have these big horns?” With a flash of light her weapon disappears and she approaches you slowly. You nod in response, still keeping your weapon ready, despite her soothing voice. “Oh heavens, this is no good. No good at all.” She lays a hand on your shoulder, “Would you please tell me what she’s been doing? Out there I mean?”

Taking a deep breath, you start to explain everything to Aqua, going back to the dream you had in which you had the sword and fought against shadows and your doppelganger. She seems to be especially keen on having you describe the area and what you experienced there, nodding along the entire time with her brain seemingly whirring away in thought.

“An awakening, normally people get their keyblade not too long after one, but, it sounds like yours was very different from the ones I’ve heard of. Those normally don’t contain shadow monsters and clones of yourself.” Aqua muses before motioning for you to continue on with your story.

The rest of the story isn’t all that interesting, up until the end at least, though the blue haired woman did give a light chuckle at your dealing with the bullies that were bothering Ranos. She seemed to have a bit of nostalgia regarding the topic of you and your friends fighting together, but it’s not exactly polite to pry into the past of someone you just met after all.

Slightly hypocritical considering what you’re doing now but eh.

When you get to the part about Ranos coming by to pick up you and Tala, she takes a keen interest again. Descriptions of the shadows attacking the town has her placing a hand to her chin, “You said they had yellow eyes?” She sounds properly concerned now, “That’s very bad news, for all the worlds out there. Those are creatures from this realm. The Realm of Darkness, and all they want to do is destroy the light.”

Oh, well that can’t be good. Still, you have a more practical question at hand, “How did you make your ‘keyblade’ disappear like that?” You ask.

Aqua seems to contemplate her answer for a moment, before just taking your arm. “It’s easier if I just show you.” She raises your hand, adjusts your grip on the haft and nods, “Now…. let go of it, in your hand, and in your mind.”

You release it, and sure enough, it vanishes in a cloud of falling orchid petals. “And to get it back, you just have to will it to your hand and it should come to you.” Once again, her lesson is effective, the blade showing up in your hand with ease. “Alright.” She claps her hands softly, getting your attention back on her, “If those monsters are escaping this realm… the maybe that means we can leave too? And… even if we can’t, maybe we can stop them from getting out? What do you say, would you like to help me?”

You consider it for a few moments, letting the weapon fade out again. “I’ll help you, IF you give me a few more lessons afterwards.”

Aqua seems surprised and slightly hurt by that. “Of course… I would have offered them freely, you didn’t have to barter them from me… Now,” She swivels, peering into the darkness surrounding the two of you. “Where, oh where, could this exit they’re using be?”

She freezes, body stiffening, “Stay back, Vasi. They’re approaching.” Suddenly she leaps away into the dark, a bright pink shine coating her body, as she hacks and slashes with the tip of her weapon at nebulous shapes in the dark, bearing the same yellow eyes as the creatures who invaded your home.

Aqua leaps away, disengaging from the crowd, as one detaches itself, rushing down at you. “FIRE!” Aqua bellows, and sure enough a giant ball of flame blasts from the tip of her weapon, blasting the shadow approaching you into whiffs of smoke, before she returns to destroying the horde. The creatures which gave you so much trouble all fall under a single blow from the young woman, but a few still manage to get around her, rushing towards you.

Aqua may have told you to stay back, but these are the things that took your home and your friends away from you, there’s not a chance you’ll just let her do all of the fighting while you have to stand in the back like a weak child!

This Keyblade thing, it makes you feel strong, and you’re going to use it to get payback on these guys. You move on instinct, slashing with the ‘teeth’ of your weapon, smashing it into the first one, only for the teeth to slam it’s face into the ground underneath, two more blows burst it into the oily smoke, before another one leaps at you, giving you just the right amount of time to swing your keyblade, bat like into it’s stomach, sending it hurtling off into the dark.

Two more meet similar fates, hacked to bits with a few well placed strikes, and before you know it, all the ones that got around Aqua have been defeated, leaving you on your own behind the blue headed woman.

She’s currently occupied with twirling on the spot, hovering in the air, geysers of blue energy spiralling around her, whipping the monsters up into the air, before she performs a wide swing with her keyblade, the flourishing slash killing the remainder of her foes in one fell swoop.

Only slightly out of breath, Aqua lowers back to the ground, back to her gentle smiles again. “I see you know how to look after yourself. I underestimated your physical abilities.” She calls over to you, a hint of amusement in her voice. “Just remember to be careful, these things are much more dangerous than they seem, and are the lowest on the food chain around here. All they want is to steal your heart and turn it into food to make more of them.”

You process that new information, nodding under her praise. “So, where are we headed now then?”

Aqua hums in consideration, before snapping her fingers, pointing to her left and slightly forward up an incline that leads over a cliff, “That way!” She declares confidently, “... Or, maybe… that way?” She second guesses with less confidence, pointing behind you and to the right.

You can hear more of the monsters behind you, though you’re not entirely sure if that means that’s the way you SHOULD be going or trying to get away from.

“Let’s try going that way.” You say, pointing behind you where you hear the monsters rustling about. “If there are more of them, maybe that means something important is over there? Like an… exit or something, how they got to my town?” Offering up the weak explanation for why you think that going towards the things that want to hurt you is actually a good idea.

Humming again in consideration, Aqua eventually nods “Normally I’d say we should be more cautious, but you may be right Vasi. At this point any direction might be the right way out, only way to know is to start exploring.” The older woman finishes, starting to head along the pathway with you at her side.

Of course, it’s not too long before the sound of the monsters start to grow louder, and even less time before you and Aqua crest over a rise on the path you’d been walking, revealing a faint light in the distance.

“That must be it!” Aqua breathes, a hint of hope in her voice. “Come on Vas… i” She’s looked down the other side of the path, heading towards the light.

A gigantic swarm of the monsters lays in your path, actually lit up this time, you can see no way around them, as they occupy the entirety of the path, which ends in a sheer drop into pure abyssal blackness on either side. “There’s no way around them from here….” Aqua sighs, summoning her blade again, “With this many, I’d need your backup this time. And some of them are stronger than those you’ve faced before.” She points out numerous monsters in the crowd, these ones standing upright, long red claws extending from their fingers, heads clad in armoured helmets.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Aqua asks, “I know you are new to this after all.”

There must be at least a hundred of them down there.

You turn to face Aqua, “I’ll rush in there and cause mayhem, could you cover me from up here with your magic?”

She looks very uncertain about your suggestion, “Ar-are you sure you should do that? I know you have potential, but that may just be reckless.”

You’re already charging in, leaving Aqua to make her own decision. You summon your keyblade in hand and rush in, thinking of a way to utilise your ability to do so. Maybe with practice, you can learn to throw it, then recall it. Still, for now, you have some ass to kick. You crash into the first wave of monsters, slashing three apart with two long sweeping blows, left then right.

Another five are already rushing at you, only to be blasted to smithereens as lightning bolts rain down from the air around you, destroying not only those creatures, but a wide circle around you as well. Adrenaline pumping through your veins, you press your advantage, rushing into the well Aqua made in the swarm.

Many of the hunched smaller shadows fall under your crushing blows, almost giving you a therapeutic release as you destroy the monsters that took down your home. The helmeted enemies are a lot tougher, taking strategy to beat. You flow with easy motion, slashing the weaker enemies apart, while defending yourself from the clawed attacks, letting Aqua cover your back.

Icy blasts eviscerate a lot of foes before they can even reach you, fire blasts them to smithereens and Aqua cuts down the few stragglers that head her way with ease.

Just when you think everything’s going great, the smoke a lot of the monsters have burst into coalesces into a huge ball over head, making an even bigger, nastier creature form. It drops in the middle of the path, a huge heart shape mark gouged clean through it’s torso.

Aqua is already rushing forward, calling for you to get back, to get away from this monster!
