Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is sparkling, and the date is January 15.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 telekinetic ‘superhero’ and you had a headache. It wasn’t because you were recovering from brain surgery. You had spent the better part of the day going through the Slumlord of the Strange’s books. She wasn’t much one for accounting though. What little records there were was due to the Kyousuke’s efforts. It wasn’t much since he had only been at it for a week. In that week gambling dens had been set up and you had little idea of who exactly were in control of this new revenue stream. It was important that you find out. Nayuta had said it was important anyway. Normally you weren’t assigned to such a mundane task but perhaps Nayuta suspected something more, or her higher ups did. You just hoped it wasn’t going to be more sinister than some flunkies cooking the books. The damage that a Code M could do by exploiting the gangs in School District 10 had been demonstrated aptly by Etzali. Needless to say you didn’t want to deal with another one like him, or worse.

That and your attending physician, Nunotaba, had suggested plenty of bed rest. The hole in your head needed healing and not, say, blunt force trauma. She had removed the Computer Assisted Dark May Emulator and patched away the VERDICT OS’ grip on your subconscious. You certainly didn’t feel any differently. Still, you were going to miss that vital piece of software that generated a personal shield for you. It was well within the scope of your Ability to do so but now you’d actually have to learn how to do it properly. The flip side was that you could now install the other two alternatives to it simultaneously. Last Order had made a fuss of trying to obtain copies of them to install but only managed to find one. Which one was it again?

So what's the state of our ability right now? Do we have to turn off VERDICTOS completely and ragdoll in order to do more than move our limbs? Do we have range of use comparable to using CADME, just with less control?

It hasn't change and pretty much yes, turn off limiter and flop around. Our range of use is the same regardless of whether we had CADME or not. CADME simply had us apply our Ability in a particular fashion.

Regardless, you were accompanying the Slumlord with Kaoru to a gambling establishment. Kyousuke had pointed out that this was one of the bigger ones. It was also one with the biggest financial irregularities on the books. He wasn’t wrong. The kind of taxes that they had to pay was supposed to reflect how prosperous the establishment was. Despite the shabby exterior, the interior was all cleaner than you had expected. There were even bouncers at the door, not that they stopped you or anything.

In one corner, rows of pachinko machines lined the walls with almost as many players. The centre of the hall was host to tables with more involved games of chance. Mahjong, poker, dice, even an odd roulette table were present on the floor. On the far side of the entrance was a board with shifting numbers, odds you deduced, for some kind of event.

“What d’ya think Pops?” Kyouko asked, “Some of these look fun.”

“They are designed to part a fool and their money, I would advise against it,” Kaoru answered.

“Or they could be paying for some cheap thrills,” you pointed out.

Kaoru only shrugged. The three of you weren’t exactly low profile either. With a party as recognisable as yours, it was probably best to go find the owner of this fine establishment before someone started something.

“I still at least wanna try that poker thing,” Kyouko said.

You and Kaoru gave her a look.

“What?”

“If you wanted to try why didn’t you play last Christmas?” you wondered.

“No partner,” she shrugged.

“A few rounds wouldn’t hurt,” you reasoned, “Might even get a measure of the people running the place.”

“I hear ya Pops,” Kyouko agreed.

“You’re still paying for your own game though.”

At that she frowned but found a table anyway. Kaoru only sighed but otherwise made no move to stop her friend. Thankfully Kyouko knew how to play. If anyone had any objections to you and Kaoru hovering over her shoulder then you wouldn’t know since no one said anything. The table’s chatter had been reduced to simply playing for a few rounds before Kyouko finally tried to break the ice,

“Nice place for a game huh?”

“Uh, sure is, er, yes ma’am,” one of the players responded.

“No need for that crap here,” she waved it off, “Just here to have fun.”

“You can’t even tell you’re being cheated,” Kaoru said.

“So what? Least it feels nice to play for a while y’know?”

The comment had a few shoulders relaxing. You kept silent for the most part as Kyouko got to know her fellows. Apparently there’s been a sharp decrease in the drug trade in and around the district. Gambling then took its place for those with disposable income. While still young, business was booming. Already there were problems emerging from competing establishments. This one was the biggest and most well equipped so far which explained their continued existence. No doubt the boss had plans for expansion. That agreed with how the security, and even some dealers, were packing heat under their fancy getups.

Eventually one of the guards asked Kyouko to follow him to the owner’s office. Apparently her presence was throwing off the game for everyone despite her intentions. It was just as well that both you and Kaoru were allowed to accompany her. As you entered the office, your eyes zeroed in on the glowing yellow bottle ship on a shelf. Then your eyes fell on the smiling young man at the desk. Then you,

There was no cause for alarm yet. Still, you silently gestured your discovery to the girls who both gave you understanding looks. Well, Kaoru did, Kyouko just scowled before she took a seat across from the owner of the establishment.

“Toshino-sama,” he spoke in jest, “this humble one is honoured by your presence.”

“Shoulda known it was you Kaiji,” Kyouko’s expression remained unpleasant, “Now cut the crap and tell me who d’ya think you’re fooling?”

“If it’s about the money then I’ll have you know I’ve followed all your rules. Exploited them perhaps but no more than any other has.”

“Explain.”

“It’s all really simple though,” he replied as if to a child, “Individually, we aren’t very rich, but if we were to pool our resources we are able to do so much more.”

“Y’all pay anyway, especially if you’re a gang,” she pointed out.

“The money’s split evenly, so individually we’re not that much richer than the average.”

“That’s a lot of people to split it between,” Kaoru interjected, “That the fact that you obviously don’t keep records. Money could be passing under the table and we would be none the wiser.”

“I assure you then, that we do keep records, both from investors and employees so don’t you worry your pretty little head.”

“It’s not me you should be worrying about,” she gestured to you, “You can’t cheat both of us.”

“Ah, VERDICT,” his fake smile remained on his face, “What does the City want now?”

“There’s been some money gone missing,” you told him, “The City keeps track of everything and if something goes missing then that means we may have a problem. A problem that only I can have to deal with.”

He winced at that last sentence.

The young man scratched his head for a bit, as if thinking to himself.

“It’s not like I can’t tell you or anything but even I know he’s not someone to be crossed.”

“Heh, don’t worry Kaiji, I’ll take care of the competition for you,” Kyouko offered, “I mean it ain’t like you pay me protection money or anything right?”

“You sure? I mean no offense to anyone but he’s pretty up there.”

“Who said we were going to fight anyone?” you asked, “The City only wants to know where the money is going. If he’s the next stop in this chain then there should be no problem. It isn’t like he’s doing anything dangerous is he?”

“I guess not,” he admitted hesitantly, “Anyway, one of the guys who gave us the money to start this up was a foreigner. American or something, tall, blonde, blue eyes, funny accent, the whole thing. Called himself Harry and he certainly wasn’t a kid with glasses. We’re basically still paying him back for the money he lent us.”

“See? That wasn’t so hard,” Kyouko said.

“Why do you think he’s dangerous then?” you pressed on.

“Well I figured he was a loanshark or something. Nobody goes around with that kinda cash and then just gives it away.”

His tone was nervous. You wondered how uncomfortable the topic was to him.

“Makes sense,” Kyouko nodded.

“Speaking from experience?” you jabbed.

She stuck her tongue out at you in response which you ignored. You continued,

“So last question, where can we find him?”

“I, I,” he struggled, “I don’t know? I mean, the first time he just came to me and I haven’t heard from him since.”

He got up, clearly distressed now.

“You okay Kaiji?” Kyouko asked.

Then you saw it, tendrils of immaterial yellow flowing in and around the room. It hadn’t come from the bottled ship. The Code M in question then must have been listening in on the conversation. Regardless of how, whatever spell that was being woven surrounded Kaiji. It was controlling him and he moved closer to the Code M artefact, the ship in a bottle.

There was no time to lose. You sprang in to action, barking at Kaoru to find the source as you leapt at Kaiji. He too hastened grabbing the bottled ship and twisting about as he tried to uncork it. You were a step too late and were greeted by a torrent of water. It gushed out, as if pressurised, sweeping you, Kyouko and everything else out the door. Conveniently, you found out that the helmet was airtight. Unfortunately it wasn’t exactly designed to recycle your breath so you hoped that you could at least work with the current before you started choking to death. Once was enough in your opinion.

The flood of water carried itself down the hallways and in to the main hall where it started to fill. Sure water was leaking out of the building but it looked like there was more than flowing in to the whole building than was flowing out of it. Right now it was at ankle height but was quickly rising. Quickly, you removed the lower portion of the helmet, breaking the seal, and took several deep breaths. At least you didn’t have to worry about Kyouko though. As far as she was concerned, respiration was beneath her. It only sold the illusion of normalcy to everyone else. She still coughed up several lungful of water.

“Fuck,” she gasped, “Never doing that again. The fuck was that anyway?”

“An endless bottle of water?” you answered.

“Fuck, what about Chibi?”

“Kaoru?” she nodded, “I don’t know, saw her running out the door before the water.”

Around you, panic had set in as the patrons of the gambling establishment were heading for the exit as water poured in from the upper floors. The water had risen as you had gathered your breath. It was climbing up your shins. You clothes were waterlogged, heavier and uncomfortable. Your next course of action was to,

“I don’t know about you but I suddenly don’t want to be here anymore,” you told Kyouko.

“Gee, I wonder why Pops.”

Outside, water was flooding parts of the street but at least the drains were working. The water was going to flow in to the storm drains underneath the City and then rejoin the ocean. Assuming there was a finite amount of water. First though, you called Nayuta.

“Well I suppose they were expecting something to happen if I sent you in,” she sighed.

“To be fair, it wasn’t my fault,” you argued, “At least we have a lead. You have any news for Kaoru yet?”

“Right,” you heard clicking in the background, “Kaoru-chan looks like she’s found the culprit.”

The picture in picture was camera footage of a chase. Kaoru’s distinctive red hair wasn’t hard to catch but it was the blonde male in a trench coat that she was pursuing that caught you attention.

“Keep the feed on,” you instructed, “I’m going to back her up.”

“Go get ‘em nii-chan.”

They were only a block away, but between the alleys and the water, it was a big head start. You wished you had your car right now and getting Kyousuke to pick you guys up would take too long. Still, you steadied your feet and looked to Kyouko.

“Tell me you found the asshole who did this,” she said.

“Of course.”

Then she accelerated in the kind of speed that was best described as a dead sprint. It only took a few seconds before she slowed down. She probably forgot that you were the one with a GPS in your helmet. Kaoru and the perp were snaking in and out of the district, taking turns at random. The GPS steered you on an intercept until you managed to get within visual range of them. Both of them were glowing yellow as they exchanged fire. CADRE gave it a 35% chance to shoot him down at this range. It could only go up as you closed in.

Honestly the position you were in wasn’t that uncomfortable. It was closer to mortifyingly embarrassing. So were the words you said to Kyouko,

“Hold me tight, I’m going to try and stop him.”

“Huh?”

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

“If you say so Pops,” she smiled.

Thankfully she was prepared enough that she didn’t drop you in surprise when you finally disengaged the Ability limiter. To her, you basically lost all strength in your limbs and body. To be fair you could probably flop around like a fish if you tried in this semi-helpless state. Your mind had turned to other matters. Formulating a small area around a potential obstacle, you waited until the perp was right in its eventual path. Then with but a thought, you sent it flying straight in to his legs. Even from down the street you could hear him swearing in his native language as he tripped and tumbled.

Kaiji was mistaken. The foreign Code M wasn’t American at all. He was British. Kaoru had her blade drawn and she always kept him in her line of sight as she trapped him against a door. You re-engaged the limiter so you could finally stop being manhandled by Kyouko once the both of you arrived on the scene. Despite a mild bout of light-headedness, you also drew your weapon.

“You’re under arrest,” Kaoru simply stated.

The Code M looked about, as if to confirm that yes, he was indeed trapped and that the door behind him was definitely locked. Honestly you never were one for the whole “come quietly” thing. Then he shouted,

“MELLON.”

The door opened up behind him and he fell in to the darkness behind it. You were about to jump in after him until Kaoru stopped you.

“I don’t think we’re equipped to follow him now,” she said.

The whole doorway was bathed in yellow and looking in you could see nothing else but darkness.

“Huh, how d’ya figure that Chibi?”

“His spell is based on language, in this case, the opening of a specific door,” Kaoru explained.

“And I suppose it leads to hell or something,” you ventured.

“In a fashion,” Kaoru confirmed.

“So what now? As much as I want to bash his fucking face in, I ain’t going to hell to do that.”

“This is the entrance, and he will eventually exit elsewhere.”

“But you don’t know where?”

“Unfortunately no, but you took a good picture of his face, or your helmet did I suspect,” Kaoru answered, “With the City’s surveillance he can’t escape.”

“And if his exit point is outside the City?”

“His exit point is the nearest mountain with a door on it, or close to it,” Kaoru elaborated.

“It’s one of those huh?” Kyouko asked.

“One of those?” now you were the one confused.

“Yeah it’s a, ‘it’s fucking magic, I ain’t gotta explain shit,’ kinda thing,” Kyouko explained.

You mere nodded. Then you realised how uncomfortable you felt. Between the impromptu bath and Kyouko’s manhandling, you’ve exerted yourself than your attending physician had recommended. Thus you wisely called it a night.

The time is now morning, the weather is crispy, and the date is now January 16.

Your head was feeling slightly fuzzy but otherwise you weren’t feeling any worse than you were yesterday. Granted you had started bleeding inside your helmet without noticing but it wasn’t that big of an issue. Still, better to be slightly weaker today than dead as a doornail yesterday. Then you remembered where you woke up. Last Order was watching the news as your mom was making breakfast.

“Oh, Kyril, you’re awake, will you be going to work today too?”

The news was playing some footage of yesterday’s incident in School District. Maybe Last Order could do some quick searches for you before you headed off to see Nayuta.

“Alright, I expect you two at the table in a moment,” your mother finally said.

“Does onii-san have something to ask Misaka says Misaka says Misaka as she discerns onii-san’s ulterior motive.”

“Am I really that transparent?”

“Misaka was simply fishing says Misaka says Misaka as she admits to her subterfuge.”

“You’re getting cheekier by the day,” you simply remarked.

You spent the next minute watching the news about yesterday’s incident. Since it was a gambling den, the story the media spun was that of an Ability User throwing a tantrum after losing the games.

“Well I was chasing the one responsible for that last night,” you told Last Order.

“I see, and onii-san wants Misaka to help him find out more says Misaka says Misaka as she concludes.”

“I have a photo in my helmet.”

Last Order simply wandered off to get started. Of course she brought it to the dining table as fiddled with her mini-computer.

“Mishka, what have I told you, no work at the table,” your mother scolded.

“Yes mother says Misaka says Misaka as she answers with false sincerity.”

Your mother simply huffed.

“Come on, let’s eat breakfast, if it’s important Nayuta will call me,” you tried.

“Alright, alright says Misaka says Misaka as she succumbs to the incessant nagging.”

She put down her computer and started on the waffles your mother had prepared. Your mother sighed,

“At least she listens to her older brother.”

Then she clearly gave you an expectant look. You weren’t sure how to interpret it so instead you chose to eat your waffles in awkward silence. Last Order’s computer searched the available databases and came back with several dozen hits. Most of them were clearly fake IDs. None of them had significant histories either. Somehow you had a feeling that Nayuta would have similar luck. What you really needed was a reliable Code M source. Well you had two you could think of off the top of your head right now. The question was who to see?

Honestly, getting information on Dinah’s friend Taylor was trivial after searching worldwide police databases. The Code M was living with Dinah and her mother as part of the arrangement the former American Ambassador to the City had made with her. Obviously she was attending the same school as Dinah so it was likely that you could ‘bump’ in to her there, or at least make her acquaintance outside of your VERDICT persona. The only reason you had to even bother her was that she was, in Ben-jii’s own words, a ‘Code M troubleshooter.’ He had to have at least some infamy in the various Code M circles. Before you could leave however, Nayuta called,

“Nii-chan, you’re usually not late to work.”

“I caught a cold,” you replied flatly, “In other news I may have a lead on the Code M responsible for last night.”

“You do?”

“I assume you haven’t found anything about the perp?”

“Well he has a bunch of fake IDs, most of them some kind of allusion to untrustworthiness, like Sir Pen T. Sortia, or Lo Ki. In fact the one he used for entry in to the City was Harry Lyesmith.”

“So aside from silly names you don’t really have anything else?”

“Nope, so what’s your lead nii-chan?”

“Well, two actually, I was going to see one and maybe you could send Kaoru to follow up on the other?”

“Don’t hurt yourself nii-chan.”

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing.”

Still Nayuta promised to have Kaoru look in to it but was rather put out on having to rely on Code M outside of the City’s control. It made her, and by extension you, look unreliable to higher ups. While she did that, you were going to approach Taylor but how were you going to do that? As VERDICT you could simply stomp in to her class and request her assistance but that drew a lot of attention. Going as yourself would require a more delicate and subtle approach. At least Last Order just installed the CASIE this morning.

The time is late morning, the weather is clear, and the date remains unchanged.

You stepped out of your mother’s apartment with a cap on your head and sunglasses on your face. Unfortunately since you weren’t VERDICT you would have to walk, or at least resort to public transportation. Thankfully the rush hour was gone and the transit to Nagatenjouki was mercifully short. Just as well that you were wandering campus during the breaks between classes, morning recess if you remembered correct.

“Friend Kyril!”

Dinah caught you wandering outside her classroom and hailed you rather loudly.

“Dinah,” you returned rather enthusiastically, “It’s been a while. How are you?”

“Stupendous,” she replied just as loudly.

You noticed Taylor pretending to look awkward and unassuming in her mousy glasses and small frame. She had disguised herself well as a student. If it weren’t for the occasional sharp glance she threw your way you would have been convinced.

“Ah, friend Kyril, this is my friend, friend Taylor,” she introduced the two of you needlessly.

You bowed.

“Pleasure to meet you.”

Oh the coy foreign exchange student act was pretty well done if you say so yourself.

“So friend Kyril, what brings you to the esteemed first-year corridor?”

“Getting to know the school,” you half-lied, “I didn’t actually know you were a first-year here.”

Taylor took her time to glance at you again with suspicion. Unfortunately your eyes meeting did not go unnoticed by Dinah.

“Ah, is friend Kyril perhaps interested in friend Taylor?” she asked with clear innocence.

“In a fashion, I actually would like to,

Indeed he has.

Just putting this theory out there: his telekinesis is actually constantly and inconsciously pulling cuties towards him.

“I say, what a terrific idea, it sounds like a date. It is a date right friend Taylor?”

“Um, no,” Taylor replied with fake uncertainty, “I mean it’s not like I’m pretty or anything, not like you anyway.”

That last bit wasn’t so much a lie as a forlorn admission of the truth.

“More cute than pretty,” you remarked, “And a lot of guys prefer that around here.”

“I see. I also find friend Taylor cute and pretty.”

“And this is also not a date.”

“And this is also not a date!” Dinah repeated.

“I’ll see you at lunch then.”

The time is now lunch, the weather is raucous, and the date remains unchanged.

Honestly you couldn’t believe how much better Nagatenjouki’s cafeteria was. It wasn’t a gourmet restaurant but by the standards of cafeteria food it might as well be. Then again, you couldn’t expect less from a school that beat Tokiwadai two years running at the Daihaseisai. You settled on some simple butter ramen whilst the girls had bought some freshly prepared club sandwiches. Even the egg and meat was still piping hot alongside the crisp and cold lettuce and tomatoes inside. You knew this because you had chanced a taste at Dinah’s insistence. The topic was mostly mundane and seemed to break Taylor out of her shell. At least that was how the act she set went. Still you managed to get them to talk about the latest incident in the City itself.

“Terrible thing it was,” you offered your opinion, “I mean understand that people gamble but some people are just sore losers you know?”

“I understand completely,” Dinah agreed, “Hopefully our friends in Judgement will bring them to justice soon enough.”

“Didn’t the casino owner get arrested?” Taylor pointed out.

“He’s more like a manager and you didn’t hear it from me,” you looked around conspiratorially, “but the prime suspect is apparently some guy called Harry Lyesmith.”

Taylor’s eyes widened a bit and you pounced,

“You seem to know a little bit about him.”

She coughed.

“Er, yeah I guess, I’m a bit of a fan of punk rock from my dad,” she was probably lying, “I forgot the name of the band but he put out one album before he moved on to become a stage magician.”

“A magician? Really, must have been a great liar then,” you commented.

“Magic’s a bit of a con yeah,” Taylor agreed, “But I guess he needed the money for his next fix. Goes to show that sex, drugs, and rock’n roll really were evil.”

“As opposed to rap and hip hop eh?”

“Wow friend Taylor, you are very knowledgeable about the subject,” Dinah interjected.

She shrugged.

“Like I said, dad got me into it.”

It was more likely that her dad was into it and not herself personally but you kept that to yourself.

“But I know this must be silly asking someone who grew up in Academy City, but do you think magic is real?”

“Look around you,” you started, “What do you see?”

“Students?” “Meatbags?”

You nearly paused at that second answer but continued regardless,

“No, what you see are students who are learning to make reality their little bitch, if you’ll pardon my language. I mean I’m a Level 3 telekinetic if you don’t remember.”

“Of course, I hear the nom de guerre assigned to you was 磁区制御(バビローン),” Dinah stated excitedly.

Well that was news to you.

“In any case I wouldn’t be surprised if magic did exist. The lines between science and science fiction get blurrier each day, like VERDICT, Academy City’s own Robocop. It just feels like anything could be possible in this day and age so I like to keep an open mind.”

The two girls looked to each other.

“Well then I believe that makes this easier,” Taylor removed her glasses.

A flash of yellow emerged from her eyes and the next thing you knew, your bowl of ramen was starting to look like a comfortable pillow that was rapidly approaching. Sleep sounded nice.

You are the Shokuhou Misaki, the Queen of Tokiwadai, the Level 5 Mental Out, and to a particularly impolite fellow and his ilk referred to as Queenie. Around you buzzed various members of your clique. They formed one of your first lines of defence of your realm which currently consisted of a gazebo, a table, and several chairs. It was lunch time and you did not wish to sit inside on a day with such great weather even if it was a bit chilly. Most of the Ladies of Tokiwadai were content to waffle meaninglessly during the break. Not so for you. While you ate, plots and plans were being hatched. It was a necessity to maintain your position. Even if you could read minds you still had to do something about them.

A stray thought entered your head. It came from what the rest of Tokiwadai called the United Kingdom of Dictator Kudou and the Railgun. Their ‘clique’ if it could be called one consisted of one Shirai Kuroko, Kongou Mitsuko, Awatsuki Maaya, and Wannai Kinuho. Currently the thought you managed to steal was the contemplation of the United Kingdom decision to eat out and together no less. Clearly this was a potential threat to your rule. It followed then that you must deal with this but how exactly were you going to do so? While you could tear the information from the impertinent Dictator’s head, the Railgun could be the cornerstone of their plot. If you were reasonable and not, in the Dictator’s own words, ‘a completely paranoid bitch,’ you might just assume they were enjoying each other’s company. But that was absolutely preposterous due to the fact that neither were romantically or sexually interested in each other or girls in general. Maybe you could leverage the Misaka network, loathe as you were to do so, especially since it was harder and harder to invade it. Still,

Either way, you simply dismissed whatever paltry concerns your little worker bees had. Thoughts of attending classes too slipped your mind. It wasn’t like the teachers couldn’t ignore you anyway. You made them ignore you. Mind control was awesome. It was the only thing that you and the Dictator could agree on. Making your way upstairs to the third-year corridor, for the Dictator was your senior, and one of the only two who could threaten you in all of Tokiwadai.

You didn’t even have to see her to pick up her thoughts. Then without a care you simply stood and observed. The Dictator’s mind was terrifying sometimes. The images and memories were extreme in nature. There was a simmering cauldron of blood thirst underneath the surface and poking at that usually was a bad idea. For now though, the Dictator was bored and that was probably the most terrifying thing of all. Instead of the usual fantasies involving some manner of over the top violence, there were also idle fancies regarding her beau.

And really, was it necessary to commit to memory the lurid details of Kyril Torikov’s magnificently scarred anatomy? You knew he had involved himself with the dark side and it was to be expected that he would have some form of physical conditioning but this was just a bit more stimulating than the usual. You didn’t think those kinds of proportions were out of place in an adult video.

“Sensei, I am going to the washroom.”

That was the Dictator’s voice. It had the usual edge on it. The peons around her simply accepted her word as law. Not for you. This meant war. The Dictator stepped outside with a smug smile on her face.

“Enjoy yourself Queenie?”

She was even using that damnable nickname.

“Mental partitioning,” she continued, “You should try it some time, or did you think the Sisters learned how to defend themselves from you so easily.”

Ooooh that bitch, unfortunately you were interrupted by a call from,

“I shall leave you to your call,” she said.

“This isn’t over Dictator.”

“Of course it is not, in the grim darkness of Tokiwadai’s halls there is only war,” the Dictator tittered, “Now if you will excuse me I need to visit washroom.”

The thought broadcast from her mind was unspoken but also quite clear to you, “Because if I don’t I may piss myself from laughter.”

The time for vengeance was not now, not today however. It was a call, a summon from the great Heart-under-Blade-sensei herself. She had returned from her long overseas sabbatical. The de facto head of the City’s unofficial Boy’s Love Society had returned and she had called for you. As but a mere member of the society you could not in good conscience disobey, not even for righteous vengeance. Out of all the members it was you she had chosen to deliver her next work to.

Or so you thought. In reality she had wanted to see you to discuss the viability of a live action adaptation. Heart-under-Blade-sensei was pragmatic like that. It would be your honour to bend wills to see Kyril Torikov bend over. Wait. Wait just a goddamned minute. Kyril Torikov was the model for Fowl Gods? The very same that was that currently in a relationship with the Dictator? Despite the disclaimers, rumours had floated around the web that Tori-kun was indeed based on a real person. Not even the dedicated WhiteKnight247 was able to track them down. Or maybe they had been sworn to secrecy. How did the Dictator manage to conceal such a thing from you was also another mystery. Then again, this was a chance to strike back at the Dictator was it not? It was twisted kind of providence but still.

Now you only needed to

The Sisters.

Finding one was easy. You had taken the Dictator’s words to heart after all. If the Sisters truly learned to resist your mental manipulation then you simply had to find a way around it. What were over 9000 minds compared to you? It was nothing. Still, corrupting that many minds would take time so you would first need to plant a seed.

“What can Third Echelon do for you says Misaka as she asks Queenie what shall her pleasure be.”

“Just a quick chat is all.”

You didn’t mention that you were going to tweak a few of her thoughts though. Just as you began meaningless conversation you dipped your metaphorical toes in to the ocean that held the minds of the Sisters, of the WORST. And of Dolly? She was truly part of the network? Well you supposed that to make an omelette you would have to break a few eggs. With a silent apology to Mii-chan you put that thought aside.

The hivemind of the Misaka network was not what you expected. They weren’t crudely edited but they were edited all the same. The Sisters had a gallery full of them. It wasn’t their presence that terrified you. Neither did the fact that the edits had gone to great lengths to get the details of Kyril’s anatomy as accurate as possible. Every scar, every contour, even the firmness and elasticity was as close as possible. It was terrifying simply because it was a message. It was a message addressed to you implanted by Testament.

“Ah, ah, ah, says Misaka as she laughs uproariously at Queenie for activating her trap card.”

There was only one epithet on your lips to scream in to the air. It was there, many historians would later conclude, that the greatest prank war, or shitstorm according to some, of Tokiwadai had begun.

Interlude End. See you next week.
