>Last time, you decided to follow your mother to the supermarket, and in the process, made a new friend named Ichigo Kurosaki! Afterwards, you and your mother went to the Urahara Shop for a quick check-up on your soul, learning of its strange properties. Finally, after arriving back home, you sensed something amiss on the Ishida property. After finding a mortally-wounded Plus in the process of turning into a Hollow, you decided to use your Reiatsu and Core Drill in an attempt to heal her…

You groan. Reaching out for your pillow, you shove it over your face in an attempt to keep yourself from awakening. Unfortunately, your attempts are stymied when your pillow is promptly wrenched out of your arms. You wince as the morning sun hits your eyes. Your vision slowly clears as you blink away the grogginess.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, you see the stoic visage of your father staring down at you. “Uryu,” he says, voice cool, “you have precisely one sentence to explain to me what you did last night.” There is no room for discussion.

“I tried to save someone.”

At that, your father just sighs, as if he had been expecting the answer. He looks out the window, past the window, to somewhere no one but he could possibly see. Finally, he slips his hands into his pockets bringing out a single cigarette and a lighter.

With the expertise of a man who had once smoked religiously, your father flips open the lighter and sets it alight in one fluid movement. He quickly lights up the cigarette and takes a drag, blowing acrid smoke upwards. The two of you stay like that for a minute or so, you lying in bed as your father blows smoke into the air. Thankfully, he was considerate enough of your health to open up the window and door. You watch in fascination as the smoke wafts upwards, slowly drifting out of the window.

“Uryu,” he says again, “tell me, do you see yourself as a hero?”

“I… guess so,” you say uncertainly. What kind of question was this?

“Then can you say what happens to heroes?” You frown, silent. “I see. As I thought, then. Heroes die, Uryu. Are you prepared to die, Uryu Ishida?” He stares at you, cigarette still alight in his fingers.

“Because I, myself, am not prepared to see you die quite yet.” He says softly. He stands back up. “The girl you saved last night is outside, with your mother. It seems she likes animals. Rabbits, in particular.” He walks to the door. “Oh, and- thank you for the chocolate.”

Try to talk more with your father. Just because we've resolved not to be like him doesn't mean we have to be on bad terms. If we were knocked out, I'm certain the person we saved is in stable condition and we can go to her later.

You sigh, scratching your head. That conversation didn’t go well at all. Well, what were you supposed to say? Your father is difficult to approach, much less talk to.

Still, you suppose he is your dad. Both of you have to make your own efforts- and you can tell your father is certainly trying in his own way.

The girl can wait, you decide. Family comes first. You stretch, then get up out of bed, slipping into your house shoes. You walk into your father’s study. From what you can tell, he was doing paperwork.

“Uryu?” He asks, noticing you lurking at the door. “What are you doing here? The girl was outside.”

After a moment of hesitation, you say, “I wanted to apologize, Father.”

He turns towards you, raising an eyebrow to ask you to continue. “I know that I make you worry about me, a lot. And that you don’t approve of me becoming a Quincy, either. And that I’m not exactly the most cautious kid ever. I’m sorry about all that. Um, last night, case-in-point.”

“Two nights ago.” Your father says. “You were out for over twenty-four hours.”

“O-oh. That’s worse than I thought, then.” You fidget awkwardly. What else is there to say? “I want you to know that I appreciate what you try to do...” You fidget again, trailing off.

You stand there for a second before your father sighs, as he always seems to do, and beckons you over. Your eyes widen as he awkwardly wraps his arms around you. You breathe in, still smelling the cigarette smoke, though with a touch of that ‘clean’ hospital smell. “You really do try to be the biggest handful you possibly can be, don’t you Uryu?” You blink, remembering those as the exact words your mother had used to describe you two days ago.

The two of you stand there for a short while. Finally, after what seems like forever, your father reluctantly lets you go. “Uryu, you must understand that as your parents, we worry about you. We’re going to continue worrying about you, no matter how old you grow. I have seen many patients die in my line of work, some as young as you.” He breathes. “And should I fail, the worst part isn’t the failure in and of itself. It is announcing my failure to the family, and seeing the pain in their eyes. I shudder to think of the day when I will be the one outside of the operating room, only to have my hopes dashed.”

Your father places a hand on top of your head, lightly tousling your head. He gives you a grim smile. “I will not make you promise me anything. I can see that you are already set on this path you have chosen, and a mere promise will not change that. I can only hope that you make the right choices.” You nod at him. He turns back to his work, waving you away.
***
After that surprisingly heartfelt speech from your father, you decide to go outside and see what kind of person you actually saved.

The Ishida property is fairly expansive; your family owns a fair bit of the forest around at the very edge of Karakura Town. It is around here, at the edge of the forest, where you see your mother sitting down on a picnic blanket, carefully watching a young, blonde girl feeding what looks like some carrots to a rabbit.

You decide to talk to your mother first. She was probably worried sick over you.

“Mom?” You say softly.

She twists around immediately, smiling in relief when she sees you. “Uryu! You’re awake.” She pats a spot next to you on the blanket. You accept the invitation and the complimentary breakfast your mother hands you. “Uryu,” she begins quietly, “do you have any idea how much we were worried over you? Again?”
You cringe. After swallowing your last bite of bread you say, “I can take a guess. Father saw me wake up. He wasn’t very happy with me.”

At that, your mother shakes her head. “Uryu, even though you say you can guess how much pain we go through, you continue to do these reckless things. Frankly, you’re going to give one of us a heart-attack someday. I would ask what you were thinking, but I assume you were entirely focused on saving her life?” Your mother gestures to the girl. You nod. “That’s a very dangerous attitude to have Uryu; tunnel-vision helps no one, especially when there’s chance of a cave-in at any point.”

“I-I know Mom. Father told me what being a hero means earlier.” You say. “And I already knew that what I read isn’t always true, anyway.”

Your mother smiles at that. “You really can act more mature when you want to, Uryu. Sometimes I wish you would act your age more often.” The two of you fall silent after your mother’s remark. Then, “That Plus you saved, Uryu. Why exactly did you decide to take such a risk?”

You watch the girl smile serenely as she finishes feeding the rabbits, petting one of their ears. You think about your answer.

“I guess I realized I had my own path to follow.” You say after a while. “I didn’t want to see her in pain anymore, but I couldn’t just kill her. So, I tried something different.”

Your mother nods, absorbing your answer. “I see. Your own path, hm? You really are growing up faster every day, Uryu.” She chuckles.

Finally, you decide that you’d waited long enough. “Um. I’m going to go talk to her now.” You say awkwardly. Your mother nods again, watching you carefully.

The girl is actually pretty cute, you think. She has long, blonde hair done up into a pair of pigtails that pool around her. She’s smiling as she picks up one of the many rabbits, lightly petting its head.

Your only other friend is Ichigo, and you just met him a few days ago. That, and he’s a boy. Aren’t you supposed to act differently around girls or something…? Well, whatever. You’re sure you’ll figure it out.

You lightly tap her on the shoulder. The girl immediately twists around. As soon as she sees you, her eyes widen to the size of dinner plates. It seems she definitely recognizes you, at least.

You wave at her, smiling. Stay friendly, you think. There’s no way this could possibly go wrong! “I’m Uryu Ishida. I, erm, saved your-“
Your introduction is cut off as she suddenly throws herself to the ground in a hasty bow. “ImreallysorryabouteverythingIhopeyouwerenthurtpleasedontbemad!”

You blink as your brain attempts to parse together the hasty string of words. “Um, look,” you say, awkwardly patting her on the head. This is what your Mom does whenever you’re upset. It should work here, right? “I’m not angry, or anything. You can get up, too. And look, I’m perfectly fine! See?” You wave your arms around in an attempt to show that yes, you are completely fine.

The girl-you’re going to have to learn her name at some point- seems to have noticed. She slowly gets up into a sitting position. “U-um. O-okay. I’m still really, really sorry though…”
You smile encouragingly. “Look, I already said I’m fine. And you have nothing to be sorry for. It was my decision to help you out. Okay?” You try to put on your best imitation of your father’s ‘stern’ face.
“O-okay…” She trails off into an awkward silence, still sending you short, furtive glances that immediately flinch back.

“So, uh. Like I was saying. I’m Uryu Ishida. I was the one who saved your life.”

…Another awkward silence. You note that she keeps opening her mouth before immediately clamming it back up. Welp, this is getting you absolutely nowhere fast. “Why don’t you tell me your name?” You suggest.

Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say, because she manages to retreat even further into herself, holding the poor bunny she captured closer. She mumbles something that you don’t quite hear.

“Sorry, can you speak up a bit?"

(1/?)
>>
>>41893478

“-member m’ name…” she murmurs again.

“One more time, please?” Seriously, this is starting to get tiring. And you just met this girl!

“I don’t remember my name!” The girl shouts, then immediately covers her mouth in embarrassment, allowing the rabbit to hop off.

You blink at her answer.

“I can’t remember anything.” She confesses. “I already told your Mom and Dad, b-but I don’t think they believe me.” She sniffs a little, then furiously rubs away the tears that had been forming. “All I can really remember is how you s-saved me with that bright green flash of light, and then waking up with a new body. I-I don’t remember anything else, n-not even my own n-name!”

You watch in muted shock as the girl tries to stifle away the freely-falling tears.

A million thoughts run through your head, but you're not sure what to do about any of them! Your father's medical texts never told you what to do about something like this!

Well, what do you do when you cry (not that it happens much anymore hahaha)? Umm…Oh, that’s right!
You stalk over to the girl, and kneeling down, you wrap your arms around her. She freezes almost immediately, and you can hear her breath catch before she accepts your hug, leaning into you and crying into your shoulder. You awkwardly pat her on the back, on top of her head, wherever. That’s what your Mom always did/does and it always worked out for you, so…

“There, there…” you mumble into her ear, “it’ll be fine. Everything’s gonna be okay…” The two of you sit like that for a while, her simply letting the tears soak into your shirt as you consciously note that you’ll probably have to throw this shirt into the laundry afterwards.

Finally, she manages to lift her face out of your shirt for longer than a second, and after making sure that she won’t break out into tears again, the two of you separate. The girl looks guiltily at your shoulder, rubbing her eyes. She opens her mouth, probably to apologize about it, but you cut her off. “It’s fine,” you say, smiling, “I can just get another shirt. It’s no problem.

You wait for her breathing to steady before you say gently, “So, you say that you can’t remember a thing before you ended up on our front lawn? Not even your own name?” She nods, biting her lip. “Okay. Um, I know that I probably can’t replace whatever name you lost, but, do you mind being given a new name?”

The blondie looks at you in wonder. Her eyes are even wider than before, but you warily look at the small tears gathering at the edges of her eyes. “I’m sorry if I offended you or-“

“N-no! No.” This time, she cuts you off, wiping at her eyes again. “Y-you didn’t offend me, Idhida-san. I-I just… Y-you would really give me a n-new name? A-and… you believe me?”

(1/?)
>>
>>41894809

You frown at her questions. “Well, of course I believe you. Sure, I guess I can see how my parents might think your story’s a little suspect. But!” You tack on hastily as you try to keep her from breaking back out into tears. “I think it would be pretty hard to fake what you did just now, so, I think I can trust you. Afew things first, though.” The girl nods furiously.

“First,” You raise a pointer finger, “we’re gonna go inside. I think the rabbits went and left, anyway.” You raise a second finger. “Second, my parents probably want to go and ask some questions to you again. You’re going to answer everything to the best of your ability.” She nods in acquiescence, and you raise a third finger. “Third, you have to agree to go somewhere afterwards.”

At your third request, the girl frowns and asks, “Go somewhere?”

You quash down the feeling of sadness in your stomach. “Um, you have to decide where to go. I mean, you need somewhere to live; you can’t just be on the streets. That goes double if you want to go to school, or something.” You say.

At that, the girl blinks in confusion. “B-but… I thought I was going to stay here? It’s where I’ve been living for the past few days, so…”

If you were honest, you didn’t know if your parents were going to let her stay here. You were definitely going to try and convince them, though. “Well, wherever you choose to go, you still have to go somewhere. Okay?” She nods, and you smile encouragingly. “Alright. I’ll just explain everything to my Mom and we’ll go back inside, okay?” You get up to leave, but the blonde girl grasps at your shirt.

“W-wait. I-I just wanted to say, erm,” she takes a deep breath, “Thank You, Uryu-san. I-I don’t really know how to thank you, but…”

You gently take her hand and smile at her again. “You can thank me after everything’s over, okay?” At that, the girl nods, and you run back to your mother.

“Alright then.” Your father begins formally. “First, tell us what you can remember off the top of your head.” Sitting in front of him was the blonde girl, sitting on the couch with her eyes closed.

“Um… I remember lying down somewhere. Everything hurt- my arms and legs, my body, my head- everything. There was this one injury that stood out though.” She gestures to her chest. “I especially remember hurting around here,” she gestures towards her chest, “and I think I was bleeding from there, too.” She looks towards you.

You frown a little. The memories are fuzzy, but, “I don’t remember anything like what you described, but I do remember your Chain of Fate being eaten away up to the last link. That was probably what was causing you pain. I do remember a fair bit of blood though.”

She nods and continues, “After a while, I remember hearing someone come close to me. I think we exchanged a few words, but I don’t remember any of them if we did; I was in too much pain. Then, I felt this wave wash over me. After that, I saw this large flash of green, and all of my pain slowly went away. I don’t remember much of anything else after that. I was probably out by then; I’m sorry.” She looks down, playing with her fingers. The three adults in the room- your father, mother, and grandfather- look back to you.

You quickly fill them in with your side of the story; you say that while panicking, you decided to call your parents out from the house, so you immediately cranked up your Reiatsu. That was probably the ‘wave’ the Plus had felt. Then, you said that you remembered how Urahara had said that your Reiatsu and even your soul was special in that it could heal itself easily, so you had thought that you could heal other using it too. After deciding to use your Core Drill as a way to transfer your Reiatsu, you remember a green flash, and then blacking out, drained.

(1/?)
>>
>>41896412

“Well,” says your father, “at the very least, both of your stories seem to corroborate. However,” he glances at the former ghost, “we now know that somehow, Uryu not only apparently healed your soul, but also managed to give you an entirely new body as well. A body that is functioning perfectly, at that. Do you have any idea how that could have happened?”

“N-no Ishida-san.”

“Then, I will ask you to close your eyes one more time.” The girl does so, obediently. “Tell me, do you remember anything, anything AT ALL, about your time before coming here?”

You watch as the young girl bites her lip and scrunches her brow in concentration. After a while…

>Rolled: 83. Success!

…she suddenly starts holding her head, seemingly in pain, and curls up into a ball on the couch. You watch in horror as tears of blood suddenly start cascading down her cheeks. A cry of alarm erupts from your throat before she’s carried away into the guest room, shivering.
***
It’s a while later when she wakes back up. “A-ah…” she mumbles. “W-where…?” Her eyes flicker around the room before settling themselves on you. “Uryu-san…? Wha-“ She moaned in pain again, holding her forehead. She swats away any attempts to hold her, though. “I-I’m fine. I think. A-anyway…” She swallows, nervous. “I-I think I remember something, Ishida-san.” She looks up at your father. He nods, and she swallows again.

(2/?)
>>
>>41896448
“U-um… I remember… Being stabbed. I remember being stabbed i-in the chest, by a… sword? Of some kind? I think it was a sword…” She scrunches her brow in concentration. “A-after that, I think I remember being thrown off of some high place. And… I think I can remember the clothing of who did it…” She pauses, before shaking her head. “No, I can definitely remember. They were wearing this dark, black cloak. After they stabbed me, they threw that cloak all around me and… I think they started choking me? I’m not sure…” She fidgets a little. “I think- I think it was after they were done choking me that they threw me off. And… that’s it. Somehow, I landed on your property, but I’m not sure how. Everything before that though… it hurt, so, so much. I don’t think I can describe it…”

There is a stunned silence as she trails off. She fidgets again. “U-um, why are you all looking at me like that? D-do you not believe me ag-gain?”

“No, no. It’s not that,” your mother says. “It’s just that you managed to remember something like that just now?” The girl nods.

Your father sighs, rubbing his forehead. “This is certainly more than we had bargained for, but less than what we needed. You can remember nothing else?” She shakes her head. “Yet you can remember something like this as if it were yesterday.” Your father takes a long breath. “Well. Your original reaction to the memory suggests that its loss was no accident, and the memory itself only adds evidence. Someone attempted to kill you, or at least heavily injure you, but you managed to live through sheer luck.” Your father shakes his head, mumbles something about needing a cigarette, and stalks out of the room, staring at the small notepad in his hand.

After that, your parents and grandfather was a fair bit more sympathetic to the girl’s plight, and agreed that she needed a place to stay for a while.

Surprisingly, they allowed her to stay on the Ishida Estate as a guest, at least until her mystery was figured out. For now, she was to be the ‘official’ (at least on paper) adopted daughter of the Ishida family. The day you showed her the adoption papers with the name, ‘Usagi Ishida’ on it, she cried tears of joy, straight into your shirt. You weren’t overly upset about it.

You grin in anticipation. You’re going to be having karate lessons, starting today! Ichigo had told you about his lessons before, and you had thought that it would be a good idea to join. Sure, you’re going to learn archery as part-and-parcel of your Quincy training, but that certainly didn’t mean you should slack on close-range!

And besides, you get to see Ichigo at least one more time a week than you otherwise would, and you’d like to think of that as a plus. Sometimes, it’s annoying that the Ishida estate is so far away from the rest of Karakura Town.

“Is that it, Uryu-nii-san?” Asked Usagi from the seat next to you, pointing out the window. Oh, did you forget to mention? Usagi had gotten into the habit of calling you Nii-san. To be honest, you weren’t all that thrilled about it; you like it when people just call you by your name. Still, she had started doing it as soon as the adoption papers had come through the mail, and no one in your family, least of all you, were willing to call her out on it.

Sometime in the future, you’re going to cut down that –nii-san into Aniki. That sounds way cooler, anyway.

“I think so, Usagi,” says your mother. You follow both of their gazes to the large building in the middle of town. Huh. So this is where you’ll be training for the next few months.

After waving your mother and your sister goodbye, you march up the steps to the dojo. When you walk in, you are immediately accosted by the teacher, who tells you that class was about to begin. After accepting your gi and headgear, you go sit by…

You frown, looking at your friend. He seems pretty lonely, just sitting in the corner by himself.

Welp, time to fix that! You slowly sneak over to him, totally unnoticed amongst all of the noise in the room. Finally, when you’re sitting right next to him, you lean over and…

“LONG TIME, NO SEE, ICHIGO!” You shout into his ear. The orange-haired boy immediately shrieks, falling off of the bench. You soon join him, having instead dissolved into a laughing mess.

“H-hey! That wasn’t cool, Uryu!” Ichigo scowls at you, having recovered from your greeting. “I could have had one of those heart-attacks!”

You manage to get up, still giggling. Stifling your laughter, you say, “Well, how else was I supposed to stop your moping?” You ask with a grin. “Besides, it was funny! For me, anyway.”

At your words, Ichigo’s scowl deepens, and he huffs, though he eventually cracks a smirk himself. “I wasn’t moping. I was just… thinking. Anyway,” he walks back over to the bench, sitting on it. Patting the spot next to him, he says, “why’re you here? Don’t tell me you’re going to take these lessons too.”

You raise an eyebrow. “And if I told you I am?”

“Well, I’d say you were dumb for not listening to me. But since you’re already here, I can’t exactly change your mind, can I?” You shake your head, still smirking. “Thought so. Well, let me tell you that you’re gonna find it really hard to actually learn much of anything around here.”

“Why’s that?” you ask, sitting on the bench next to him.

“Tetsuo Sato’s why.” He says, frowning. “He’s the big kid in the back- you see him? That one. He’s the best in class, besides Tatsuki Arisawa, and they’re always butting heads. Whenever anyone is up against Tetsuo, he leaves them with as many bruises as he can pull off without being kicked out.”

(1/?)
>>
>>41898104

“Bruises?”

“Yeah. Trying to face him down in matches isn’t fun; I can tell you that. I’ve tried a ton of times…”

“And the instructor just allows this?”

“Yeah. Morino-sensei isn’t exactly the best with kids- I personally think he used to be a secret agent working for the Defense Force, but that’s just me.” Ichigo shrugs. “Anyway, he says the pain’s good for us. Something about it building character.”

You can’t believe Ichigo’s words. Bullying? Abusive teachers? In a karate class, where there is a great deal of potential for it to bloom up into something worse?

>Well, I for one, am not going to just sit here and take that! We’re going to show him a lesson right now!

You scowl over at the other side of the room. The kid looked maybe three years older than you, and probably had several extra pounds on you because of that, but that doesn’t matter!

What matters is that this guy is just some big bully, and you’re not gonna stand for it! “Well,” you growl, standing up, “am NOT going to just stand here and take it! Come on Ichigo, we’ve got an idiot to beat into the ground.” You began walking off, only to notice that no one appears to be following you.

You look behind you and, lo-and-behold, Ichigo definitely wasn’t following you. You march up to the orange-haired boy, scowling. “C’mon Ichigo, I said WE’ve got an idiot to beat into the ground.” You grasp at his arm, but Ichigo steadfastly remains seated on the bench. After a minute of pulling you step back, panting. You raise an eyebrow, irritated. “You can’t seriously just want to take this from him, Ichigo!”

“Shouldn’t you at least wait until after class ends-?”

“What are you saying, Ichigo? If you want a problem taken care of, you should do it as quickly as possible, and do it head-on! Now, let's GO!” You tug at him one more time, but only end up slipping onto the floor.

When you get up, you silence whatever words were on Ichigo’s mouth with a stare. “Alright, I see how it is.” You narrow your eyes, then nod at him once, resolute. “If you ever feel like jumping in, feel free to do so.”

Turning back around, you take a long breath and then:

“OI! FATTY IN THE CORNER! YEAH YOU! I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!”

It is dead silent in the dojo. And then, you hear laughter. Not nice laughter, though. Mocking, cold laughter, that just makes your blood boil. The older kid stalks over from his corner of the room over to your own, grinning.

“So, you wanna have a piece of me?” He asks with a smirk. “Alright, name your rules.”

(1/?)
>>
>>41898811

He looks a lot bigger up close, you think, but you slap the thought away. This isn’t the time to get scared! “You, me, middle ring. If I win, you stop bullying all of the kids in class.”

“And if you lose?”

“I’ll leave you to do whatever you want, and you’re free to beat me up every day I come here.” You answer coolly.
***
The ring is set up, and both of you are in your respective uniforms, headgear firmly in place. As Ichigo told you, the teacher was totally apathetic to the entire match, no objections to the rules or anything. Just a ‘fight well, don’t leave each other’s brains on the floor.’ If it was possible, that just made you scowl harder to see that Ichigo was totally right.

You watch as the referee, that girl Tatsuki Ichigo had told you about, count down. And then...

“Begin!”

Okay, you think. Just because he’s bigger and stronger than you doesn’t mean you can’t kick his butt. You breathe in and out, trying to calm yourself down. You’re not going to get anywhere if you just rush into this.

With that in mind, you fight defensively, trying to develop a feel for his attacking pattern, shifting left, right, and backwards every time he lunges for you. Ducking under another one of his punches, you smirk and slip inside his guard, using your smaller stature to your advantage.

Slipping out of an attempted grapple, you duck down, and kick him in one of his legs, trying to trip him.

Unfortunately, the attack itself didn’t seem to do much in terms of pain or effectiveness thanks to his bulk, and just made him angrier at you. On the plus side, he’s a little more predictable now.

Y'know with our archery skills, lil' Ishida should have some strength in his arms. It takes a lot of muscle to competently use a bow and I imagine Quincy archery is very old school.
>>
>>41899226

Alright, time to punch this guy’s lights out so hard, he won’t HAVE any lights to punch out anymore. You flow around a few more punches around the child, analyzing every single move. Unfortunately, after your hit from earlier, he’s playing a fair bit more defensively too. You don’t see any openings, or at least not any you could exploit with your current level of skill… Wait, there!

You plaster on the biggest grin your face could have as you duck down yet another one of Tetsuo’s kicks. Unlike the other ones, though, he aimed a bit too high, and seeing your chance, you raise your hands over your head at the precise moment.

Moving with his momentum, you pull him closer to you, and cocking your arm back, you Punch.
Well, perhaps ‘punch’ wasn’t a strong enough turn of phrase. ‘Gave him a deluxe knuckle sandwich’ was a better metaphor. And of course, if there was one thing you learned from watching cartoons with your sister, it was that you had to announce your finishing move.

“STOP-HARASSING-MY-FRIEND-PUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCH!” You shout, hearing the satisfying sound of breaking cartilage as your fist met his face, and promptly left the latter soaring out of the ring.

Grinning and flush with victory, you walk over to the moaning heap that was Tetsuo, and promptly stomp on his stomach. “Hey. I won. Now, if I ever see you bully some other kid in here, I’ll punch your face in a second time, got it?”

The muscle-brained-moron nods once, fearfully. You smirk, stepping off of his belly, and watch in satisfaction as he rushes over to the medkit in the corner, trying to reset his nose. A few of the kids in his former posse actually do rush back over with him- it’s good to know that he at least made some real friends around here, not just minions- but for the most part everyone else turns towards you.

(1/?)

>>41899830

In response, you turn towards the teacher, who seems just as surprised at this turn of events. “Well?” You ask. “Don’t you have a class to teach, here? What are you waiting for?”
***
You quickly find that the reason why the teacher allowed all of the ‘playful roughhousing’ was because he was in fact lazy. Still, at least he had to make some kind of effort now, rather than relying on ‘experience’ to do the work for him. You would say that you’d learned SOMETHING at least.

Most of what you’d learned was out of necessity, though.

>Roll 4d100 for Hand-to-hand Exp.

Opening up your boxed lunch, you wave Arisawa over to your side of the table, leaving Ichigo to wallow in his ditching unfriendliness. You’ll talk to him later, you decide. Not now though.

After glancing over at Ichigo in worry, Arisawa decides to sit next to you. Opening up her bento, she asks, “So, what exactly was that?”

Scarfing down some rice, you raise an eyebrow. “What was what, exactly? Be specific.” You proceed to stuff your face with whatever you can fit in. You’re actually pretty hungry after beating up that musclehead. Who knew that fighting took up so much energy.

“You know what I mean,” says Arisawa, rolling her eyes. “You show up to this dojo once, trash the second-best student in the class without any help, while shouting out your ‘finishing move’ to the skies.”Arisawa waves around her chopsticks for emphasis. “All without anyone knowing your name! Well, except Ichigo, but apparently you two already knew each other, so.” The black-haired girl scarfs down her food, easily matching your pace.

“’Just Ichigo,’ huh?” You ask, curious. “Not Kurosaki-san, or even just Kurosaki? Just Ichigo?”

“We go way back,” answers Tatsuki. “We both started training here when we were four, I punched him out ‘cause he was a wuss, he started crying, and I helped him up because again, he was, and still is, a wuss. But that’s beside the point. Answer the question. And tell me how you know Ichigo, since I didn’t hear you add a single honorific, either. And tell me your name while you’re at it, too.” Arisawa promptly goes back to shoveling food into her mouth.

(1/?)
>>
>>41900593

“Well, in reverse order: My name’s Uryu Ishida!” You grin. “Second: I met Ichigo a few weeks ago at the supermarket, and we became fast friends. And third: hearing that someone was just bullying everyone else around here was making my blood boil, so I decided to go ahead and punch him in the face to shut him up. Is that all?”

Arisawa frowns at you. “That can’t be it. No one’s strong enough to just straight out punch someone out of the ring at our age. That’s ridiculous. I certainly can’t do it, and I’ve been at this for a lot longer than you have.”

“Well, my family does make me practice archery. That could be it.” You muse, shrugging. You swallow the last bit of fish on your plate.

Arisawa snorts. “Yeah, right. Some archery practice is definitely going to get you that strong this quickly. It's good for upper-body strength yeah, but even if you did it every day, I still would have doubted that stunt was real if I hadn’t seen it for myself.”

In response, you only shrug. “Well, maybe I’m just that awesome.” Arisawa snorts.

“Well, everyone has their secrets, I guess. See you ‘round, Ishida. Oh, and, mind talking to Ichigo? He’s been moping in the corner since you won the fight. Oh and, if you ever get tired of coming here, ask Ichigo. We can train sometime, all three of us.” Arisawa promptly finishes her lunch, throwing her box into a small bag she left on the floor, and walked over to a pair of adults with similarly-colored hair, assumedly her parents.

Well, you could go ahead and talk to Ichigo now. That, or you could wait for your mother to come pick you up and talk to him over the phone later, instead. His mother will probably help him out in the latter case.

>Eh, just walk over and cheer him up. He’s your friend, and friends help each other, don’t they?

You sigh. Welp, might as well bite the bullet. You really can’t stand seeing him like this. He’s supposed to be smiling and jumping around and listening to you talk his head off about Quincies and spirits, not drag his feet around like a really bad puppet!

You walk over to him, and promptly plop yourself on the open seat next to him on the bench. He glances at you, surprised. Then, he sighs, scratches his head, and gets up to leave.

Irritated, your hand darts out, grabbing at his gi. You’re not having NONE of that. “Yo, Ichigo. Sit with me for a sec.” You say. Ichigo blinks, as if unable to comprehend what you said. “Yes, you! Come on, I’m not gonna bite your head off or anything.” Ichigo reluctantly sits down next to you, looking away.

“Hey, look at me in the eyes when I talk, Kurosaki.” The use of his last name gets his attention, and he finally makes eye contact. “Look, what’s gotten you so down?” You smile at him. “I beat up that Tetsuo guy for ya! You should be happy! You’re not going to get pushed around here anymore! Well maybe by Arisawa, but apparently you two know each other so I’ll let that slide.”

Ichigo frowns and sighs in response. “Oh, come on, that’s not an answer, Kurosaki,” you flick a finger at his forehead, knowing that it annoys him to no end when you do it, “At least give me something to work with, ya know!”

Ichigo scowls at you before finally answering. “Look, I just… I just feel like a complete failure, okay? You don’t have to go to all this trouble just to try and cheer me up…” He looks back down.

Instead of dignifying that with an answer, you promptly grab Ichigo by the shoulders and start shaking him with fervor. By the time you’re finished, he’s swaying a little from dizziness before he finally turns back to you, snarling, “What was THAT for, Ishida!?”

You just smirk in response. “Now that’s more like it! Tell me, Ichigo, why exactly did you come to this dojo in the first place?”

Ichigo pauses at the sudden question. “Well, I guess…” he thinks for a second. “Well, you know how my name means ‘to protect one thing,’ right?” You nod, signaling him to continue. “I-I wanted that ‘one thing’ to be my mom, you know? I thought that if entered this place and maybe got some lessons, at the very least I wouldn’t need her to protect me anymore, so even if I couldn’t protect her, I wouldn’t put her in any unnecessary danger.”

He looks back at his feet, somewhat bitter. “Lot of good this did me, though. I just got more people protecting me, rather than less! First Tatsuki-chan, now you… Maybe I should just quit at this stuff while I’m ahead-!?” The very end of his sentence was promptly cut off as you had decided to grab him by the waist and throw him out onto the floor. “O-ow!”

You walk over to the little insignificant carrot on the floor, plucking it out of the ground. “Well with THAT attitude, it’s no wonder you’re not doing well!” You say, rolling your eyes. “Honestly, Ichigo, if you just give up before you even start, what was the point in coming here in the first place!?” You drag him up close to your face. “Well!?”

(2/?)
>>
>>41901565

Ichigo tries to wriggle out of your grasp. Obviously, he fails. “Y-you saw how I was out there! I didn’t even do a thing to help you! I-I ran away like a wuss! Just like how Tatsuki-chan said I was!”

You snort and promptly drop the carrot back onto the floor. “I wasn’t asking you about how well you did before! I was asking why you even came here if you were going to just give up! Look at me in the eyes, Ichigo! Are you gonna go and protect your loved ones, or are you going to just let others do it for you!?”

“W-well- I don’t think I can-“

“I think you can, Kurosaki.” You say, cutting him off. “I can say the following with complete certainty: I believe that Ichigo Kurosaki can protect whoever he wants to!”

Ichigo blinks, then looks up at you, as if in awe. “How can you just say something like that!?”

You grin. “Because in the short time I’ve known you Ichigo, I can already tell that if it really comes to it, you would do ANYTHING to protect those you care about.”

“You’ve barely known me for a month-!”

“So? I can still believe in you, can’t I?” You throw out your hand to lift him back up. “Right?”

Ichigo blinks, then says, “Maybe you can believe in whoever you want Ishida, but I don’t know if I can believe in myself…”

Alright, now you’re just irritated at this point. Deciding that enough was enough, you bend down, grasp Ichigo by the arm, and force him to stand up to your height. Grabbing him by the shoulders, you look at him right in his eyes. “Look, you don’t HAVE to believe in yourself, Ichigo, if it makes you feel any better. You believe in me, right?”

Ichigo snorts. “After what you just did today? How couldn’t I?”

“Then just believe in me!” You say. “I believe in you, and if you believe in me, then logically you HAVE to believe in yourself then!” You smirk, adjusting your glasses. “In the end, it doesn’t matter who you believe in! So just BELIEVE, Ichigo!” You poke him in the forehead. “You can do that, can’t you?”

“Nii-san!” Turning around, you see that your mother and sister are already at the door. Turning one last time to Ichigo’s gobsmacked expression, you say, “Remember what I said, Ichigo! You don’t have to believe in yourself to believe!”

Feeling that your job is finally done, you walk towards the door, picking up your stuff along the way. You wave at Kurosaki, not even bothering to face him. After all, you have complete confidence in him. What else is there to say?
