This is a quest inspired by the game, Long Live the Queen. The setting is fantasy medieval with magic. You play a princess attempting to rule a small, unimportant kingdom rise back to the glory of former past. The only problem being, you are COMPLETELY USELESS and CLUELESS as you have been spoiled as a child. It is up to you to quickly learn and overcome the easy life that has hampered you. Whether becoming a charismatic queen that draws heroic servants to your cause, a battle-leading amazon conquering land, or a foolish bumbling tyrant is all up to you.

The game is not harsh like Long Live the Queen where everything can kill you and end the game. It is however imperative to think about the consequences of your actions and decisions. Too many mistakes may cost you reputation, friends, the love of the people, and maybe even your rule. All in all however, common sense is a fortuitous guide.

And remember that is sometimes better to play through consequences for the sake of story, character, and roleplay that just trying to win something.

And what art thou, thou idol ceremony?
What kind of god art thou, that suffer’st more
Of mortal griefs than do thy worshippers?

-------------------------------------------

In the previous session you set out to improve the economy and trade of your city. Visiting the markets, you hear various suggestions and decide upon furthering crab fishing and creating vineyards with breweries. It’s only a matter of time before you hear the results of these endeavors. You are visited by a noble suitor and you politely receive his courting.

It is a cloudy and cool morning when you are in the courtyard, practicing another lesson of magics with Rorona. After learning to enchant others with buffs like improving their strength and speed, you’ve also begun delving in to creating magical shields and barriers.

You take a step forward and raising your hand mid-air you begin chanting. In a few seconds particles of green light begin appearing in front of you. You concentrate with all of your might and drop a bead of sweat as you focus on channeling your spirit. The balls of particle light begin forming together. You keep up your act and upon another set of seconds, a green shield is formed in front of you.

“Teacher!” you yell. “Do it now!”
“A-Are you sure?” the pink-haired girls asks, looking scared and frightened.
“Yes, now!”
“O-Okay! Here I go!”

Rorona swings her staff full force at you, the metal rod of hers making a scary swish sound as it flies to your face. But the blunt weapon does not reach you and is instead repelled by the green shield in front of you. The force of the blow and reverberation sends Rorona flying back and she is knocked to the ground on her rear.

You stop the channeling as you try to catch your breath, placing your hands on your knees as you lean down. But you have little time to rest as you are suddenly grabbed and hugged by Rorona who immediately came running to you.

“You did it, you did it!” Rorona says happily as she squeezes you with your head stuffed in her chest.

The day of your training is finished and you wipe your brows with a small cloth. Your brown hair is a bit frazzled with some ends sticking out like small twigs. You need to make sure Tammy fixes that once you move on to your kingdom duties, else you would look like just go out of bed. You smile at Rorona who shakes your hand.
“Amazing! It took me much longer to get to this level,” Rorona says in slight embarrassment. “I think you have a more talent for this than me.”

Placing your hands to the side of your hips, and puffing up your chest in pride, you stand proudly in the grass and make the impression that you're a little bigger than you really are. With a smug smirk you nod.

"Of course! Let it be known that Linnette Ornesia is a genius that only needed to try!" You place a hand to your chin. "Ohhhhohohoho!"

"Yes! You're really amazing Princess!" Rorona says cheering you on and clapping, inflating your ego just a little more.

"Ah! But of course, it is only because I had the best teacher in the world! Teacher, thank you!
"D-Do you really mean that?"
"Of course! Teacher, you and I are destined for greater things!"

Rorona begins sniffling and you can see that she is touched to the point of almost crying.

"Ah, Teacher, you must be hungry," you say so that she won't actually start bawling. "Let us eat have tea and snack time."

"Oh! Yeah, good idea!" Rorona says cheerfully. "I baked a pie this morning!"

You and Rorona sit together at the courtyard table and Tammy brings in hot tea for refreshments. Rorona brings out her pie, a cherry one and places it on the table. Taking two small pieces the both of you take a chunk of the pie in your mouth.

It is absolutely delicious.

“Mmmmm!” you and Rorona both let out as you the pie. Surprisingly, it seems your quirk of a teacher can also cook pastries.

“Princess,” Rorona says. “I think at this point I can’t teach you more about support magic. I’m just not that good enough, haha,” she says rubbing her neck in embarrassment. “We can try learning other magic, or perhaps you should start getting tutored in other things.”

You take a sip of the jasmine tea as you ponder for a few seconds on what you want to do next. Considering your previous stance and goal of becoming a magical ruler loved by her people, you think the next choice is obvious.

"Teacher, I want to move on the healing magic," you tell Rorona. "It would work well with what I have learned so far, right?"

"Mmm... Somewhat," Rorona replies. "Healing magic is based more on the teachings of Petra and the church. But I don't see why you would have any trouble with it. Once you learn the basic of magics it should be easier to get in to other types."

"Great! We can begin tomorrow then," you say happily.

"Thank goodness," Rorona says with a slight sigh. "It looks like I'm not out of a job yet..."

"Mmm? What do you mean Teacher? You can stay here forever!"
"Eh!? Really?" Rorona replies in shock.
"Of course! I am still much in need of talented people, and it would help me a lot if there were people I can trust at court. In fact Teacher, I think I shall forcefully keep you here and never let you leave!

And then the wetworks begin again as Rorona moves to your seat and hugs you, bawling in happiness.

"Thank you Princess! To think that the days where I would travel the roads half-starved and collapse would be over. I swear I'll do everything for you Princess!"

So ends another morning with your goofball teacher.

---------------------------------------------

Noon comes and your kingdom duties start again. Previously, you were thinking of touring the barracks and overseeing the military equipment based on what Raymund said. You remember that Raymund has informed you that the power of your military is relatively weak with only 500 soldiers in service, and even some of the nobles houses can hold up to a hundred soldiers in their personal retinue. Perhaps you would like to increase the strength of your force?

Deciding to see for yourself the condition of your military, you head over to the barracks located right next to the castle. The barracks is a small installment surrounded by wooden barricades with several small houses stacked together where the soldiers sleep. A few guard towers are posted around.

You enter through the gates and a few guards heading out for patrol bow, some of them quite surprised you would be coming to their area. You look around the place and you hear a small commotion near a guard tower.

"Hey! Why are you guys still sitting around! We're suppose to head over to the city walls today!" you hear a small girl in armor say to two men sitting on crates. A closer look and you can see the girl is really young, younger than you in fact and short. The green-eyed, blonde girl is heavily armored and she carries a lance and shield despite her small stature.

"Ah stow it Cecile," one of the men say, a gruff looking man with a brown beard and likely in his thirties. "It's not like much happens here anyway. Why don't you relax instead of always going around and bossing people around."

"It's YOUR duty," the girl argues. "What are you going to do in a criminal gets away, or someone attacks, or monsters start popping up!? Move, move, move!" the girl commands and start poking the men with her lance.

"Hey! Are you crazy!? Stop that!?"

Not willing to take a side or having a strong opinion, you decide to simply walk over and greet the trio instead. As the three dance around yelling each other, you stop in front of them with hands clasped behind your back and a smile.

"Hello."

"Eh!? What!?" one of the guards as the three turn around. The three of them stare at you and a time of silence elapses.

"Ey, who's this?" one of the male guards asks to the other. "A lost noble girl? Should we take her back?"

"Idiot! It's in the Princess!" the blonde girl guard snarls as she pokes the guard again in the butt.

"Oh-Oh! My apologies! Princess Ornesia!" the guards exclaim in surprise as they quickly bow and stand up straight. "What brings you here m'lady?"

You take a glance at the guards. Besides the girl in the heavy plated armor, the other guards are in rather rustic leather armor and worn-out looking spears.

"Mmm well," you say placing a finger to your lips. "I've come to inspect the soldiers and check the condition of our armory. Speaking of which, can it be that my soldiers are slacking in their duties?"

The two male guards look at each other in a small panic.

"Not at all m'lady! We were on our way to the walls, right now! We were just resting after training! Please, excuse us!" the gruff guard says as he slaps the other man in the back. The two bow multiple times and run off towards the city and you smile at them with a nod.

The yellow-haired girl sighs.

"Thank you Princess, it's always like this..."
"Would you care to show me around? I would like to inspect the condition of our force."
"Ahh yes! Of course, please come this way."

The girl eagerly nods and begins leading you around the barracks. You decide the ask her a question as the both of you go along.

"You seem to hold... Better attire than the rest of the guards. Why is that?" you ask as you walk alongside the girl.

"Oh... Well, my armor was bought and given to me by my family," she replies. She stops for a moment and salutes. "Cecile Collins mam! From the Collins House of Lunar District. Unfortunately, the other guards do not have armor and weapons of their own. Theirs is issued from... Well, your own treasury and upper management. Umm... Not to say I'm better or anything..." she says a little terse.

You feel a bit uneased at the poor equipment of the soldiers, and moving on to the armoy, your worries are quite founded. Scrappy leather armor, some dusty and old swords, rustic shields.

"This might be a problem," you mutter, placing a worried hand to your mouth. "Cecile, how bad is this?"

"Well..." Cecile says looking over the armory as well. "Compared to other kingdoms, it might not be too bad. Typically most common soldiers everywhere have these types of inventory. It's the noble knights that come to service in times of war that typically come with good equipment since their houses can afford it. But some of the more militaristic kingdoms, like Galtea in the far north hold more professional soldiers. Iron armor, properly sharpened weapons... I guess that's needed when they're clashing with the nomadic tribes of the plains, or the mercenaries of Priveria."

A lot of the things Cecile says slightly go over your head. You have not been informed much on other kingdoms and geography.

"We haven't had a war for over fifty years. The last time it was with our eastern rival, Salsburg. It's been peaceful for the last few decades, that must be why our troops aren't in the best condition..."

"Cecile," you ask in a serious tone. "What is to be done about this? How can we improve our arms?"

"Oh, well," Cecile says as she thinks. "You could always purchase weapons and armor at the markets... Other than that, you can establish smithies and works in the city. Building your own smithies and works can be quite expensive, though it might pay better in the long run instead of just purchasing weapons. And if you so wish you can always recruit more volunteers from the city and villages. I'm sure there are people in need of work."

You nod to Cecile. Remembering your funds, you have about 1000 gold coins in the treasury after the previous endeavors. Perhaps you should look in the purchasing weapons and armor, or look in to making the smithies.

"Well, unless there is anything else, I would return to my duties Princess," Cecile says with a salute.

"No, keep up the good work Cecile," you reply with a smile. Cecile gives you another salute before running off.

You head back to the castle and oversee the suggestions given by Cecile. After research, you find the findings required to improve your army.

You can purchase improved melee weapons, bows, and armor of your current standards at a 3 for 1 price in gold each. That would mean spending 168 gold for either type, with a grand total of 504 gold if you want to fully equip your army with improved iron swords/spears, bows, and lather armor.

The next tier of upgrades which are steel swords, iron armors, and composite bows come at a 2 for 1 price.

You can also build weapon smithies, leatherworks, and bowyards for 1000 gold each. This would mean permanent improved weapons/bows/armors without need to purchase from the markets.

Advanced weapon smithies (Steel swords/spears), advanced armor smithies (iron armor). and advanced bowyards (Composite Bows) would cost 2000 gold each.

A lot of the information you have gathered and spent time researching makes you feel a little dizzy. It is quite the ordeal, and considering your funds, you might want to wait until the tax season before moving on with the military.

You have 1050 gold

You decide for now to outfit your troops with improved leather armors, spending 167 gold to get a total of 501 armor. Having troops killed, losing battles, or perhaps even enemy sabotages can make you lose these limited arms.

(501 improved leather armor purchased, -167 gold, 883 gold remaining)

Having spent the entire day looking over your military procurement, you also gain a better understanding of supplies and inventory.

(Linnette gains Basic Logistics)

With the day's work done, you sigh in relief and head for bed.

----------------------------------------------

Another week goes by. You begin lessons on healing magic from Rorona who explains you the basics. Healing magic is based upon faith and prayers to the light, and in the land of Lucedonia the people follow the goddess Petra. If you wish to learn more about the religion, you would likely have to visit the local church.

In any case you learn to cast basic healing spells. You can heal small light wounds overtime, but it can be taxing if you try to heal multiple people.

(Linnette gains Beginner Healing Magic)

The first visitor to come to your court is a short, stout dwarf named Finus in fine dress with red hair all around. He informs you that he is head of the breweries.

"M'lady, we've created a number of wines and have already shipped them out to the neighboring kingdoms. I would say for the most part we have had expected results. The best selling item is our peach wine. A fine drink if I do so say myself, we only use the sweetest of peaches and refined sugar from East Windhor. We've dubbed it Linettian in your honor and the story we've heard."

You remember that you accepted a peach from the merchant who told suggested selling wine as a commodity. It seems word has spread that this was how the current wines shipped were made.

You receive the wine nodding in acknowledgement to Finus with a smile. Taking a look at the bottle, it is a light pink color with small red swirls at the bottom. Small bubbles come up when your shake it slightly. You hand over the wine to Tammy who takes it to storage.

"Thank you very much Finus. It would please me greatly if you were to continue your work."

The dwarf bows.

"No, thank you Princess. My friends and I are busier than ever and every weekend we drink to your health."

Finus bows several more times before he leaves.

You agree to follow Hugh and head towards the docks, the man moving in quick excitable fashion. You hurry along beside the man to catch up and take a glance at the man who is all smiles.

"So I would assume this is good news?" you ask leaning your head in.

"Just wait till you see Princess," Hugh replies.

When you arrive at the docks a crowd of people has gathered around the wharf. Hugh lightly pushes the crowd out of the way to makes a pathway.

"Shigure! Drop a net!" Hugh calls.

Up above the large fishing ship, a black-haired girl pokes her out and confirms with a "Roger!" A huge net is slowly lowered down to the ground. In the next you can see what seems like a hundred blue crabs squirming about. The crowd around let out a moan of surprise and begin talking to themselves.

"Do you see that m'lady!?" Hugh says with fists balled in the air. "We were catching so many that it depressed me that we didn't have enough room or nets to catch more! AHAHAHAHA!" Hugh lets out a triumphant laughter.

"We did it! We did it!"

Like two pair of monkeys, you and Hugh cheer and jump in excitement with arms around each other while chanting your success. Perhaps not exactly the most refined look expected of princesses for the people around, but you do not care for such right now. As you and Hugh settle down, you walk over to the crabs and lean down. With a finger you begin poking at the things.

"Ahh... M'lady that's dangerous, p-" Hugh attempts to warn you, but finds himself too late as a crab pinches you. You let out a little yelp as you struggle and wave your finger around. Hugh rushes to help you get the crab off, only for the crab to pinch him and latch unto him.

"Ahhhh!"

The both of you struggle and after much sauntering around the crab finally gets flung away and plops in to the waters below. You and Hugh look at each other, and then laugh.

"Princess, I'll get to shipping these crabs to the markets right away. I daresay," he says whispering to your ears and pointing at the crowd. "Some of the other fishermen look mighty salty right about now. I bet they will start expeditions to the islands right away. I am willing to bet that we'll be seeing waves of crabs in the markets in no time."

You nod to Hugh and thank the man.

"Also Princess, here," he says handing over a bag to you. It seems be a bag of 100 gold coins. "Our crew will be rich today, and this is the least I can do for helping me repair my ship and setting me up for this success."

You graciously accept the gift and thank Hugh. The fisherman hands over the bag politely in two hands before he turns around to call out to ship.

"Start unloading the rest of the catch, Shigure! We're going to be shipping our catch all day and finding the highest bidder! And tonight a dinner and round of drinks all on me!"

"Roger!" comes the reply again from the girl.

Hugh turns back to you.

"Well, that's about all the time I will be stealing from you Lady Ornesia," he says. "Thank you for taking the time to the docks. I don't think any other ruler would have bothered to..." he says with a smile.

Do you have anything else to say or ask before you return to the castle?

"You'll have to introduce me to the crew sometime. I would love to see the others working to improve this country."

Or something to that effect.

Congratulate him again on big catch and return to the castle.

"Introduce me your crew sometime," you say with a smile. "I would love to see the others working to improve this country. Again, congratulations and thanks for your work."

"Of course," Hugh says as he bows.

-----------------------------------------

At the end of the month you receive your tax and levy revenue. With the recent addition of the wine and crab commodities that you helped to make, you hear small interest in your kingdom has risen and some people are moving to Seraphia. The roads you connected between the various villages also help bring in more trade between your territories.

The additional gold you receive is small as your commodities have only recently been spread. The following months however should prove even more income once a steady medium of outgoing trade is established. The tax breaks you gave for the fishermen this month also eat a bit away at the income.

(+600 gold)

As you look over the reports you hear the door to your office open. A fat, portly man enters.

"Lady Ornesia! Good to see you again!" Barrington says in a boisterous voice. "How have you been Princess? Good?" he says with a laugh as he comes bumbling in. Typically a guard or Tammy informs you first before someone sees you but it seems Barrington has allowed himself in.

You slightly remember this man during the time you took the office and throne. Tammy informed you that he is one of the most prominent of the noble houses. You also remember his sycophantic attitude.

Is this a thing now, anyone can go in unannounced now?
>>
The rude, worm of a man slightly irritate you and your eyes and face look disapprovingly at Barrington. The bald pompously dressed man however catches no interest in your as he struts about and locks his hands together.

"Princess," he says leaning forward. "I have recently heard... troubling things at court," he says. "That your highness may perhaps implemented some policies that may not be the benefit to our kingdom."

You raise a brow. You do not think you have done anything wrong so far, nor have you failed in any endeavor.

>what do you mean?

I really wanna disagree right now but I also wanna keep glaring at him so I'm gonna go with glaring and then disagreeing with him when he actually says what it is we did wrong.
>>
>>42883629
>>I respectfully disagree
We're the magical princess of love, there's no way opening court to petitions from commoners would be bad.
>>
You keep your lips pursed, refusing to speak with Barrington and remaining patient for the man to get to the point. Barrington looks back at you, and for just a second, he slightly does a nervous twitch as he fixes the collar of his shirt.

"Princess, most recently you've opened up the court for petition with the commoners. While I commend you for caring for them, I must tell you that this sets a dangerous precedent. We commonly have a system here where the lower classes listen, obey, and follow rules. I fear that your open court can give... dangerous thoughts to the commoners. Give them ideas and the like you see..." Barrington scratches his neck.

"Why, just the other day I was talking to Lady Irin and she was telling me about the serfs under her complaining about their work. Just imagine if more and more people began to complain. And imagine if they start rising up..."

He holds a finger up.

"And I also heard the other day that a mere fisherman touched your ladyship. The nerve of it all, Princess.

Please, for the sake of the court and order, cancel the open court."

How do you reply?

>politely refuse
>angrily refuse
>...perhaps the man is right

>>42883773
>politely refuse
Angrily refusing only shows that we don't know what we're doing.
Doesn't mean we can't be polite in a cold manner, though.

"I am afraid I see nothing wrong with the current way of things," you cooly reply back to Barrington clasping your hands together and placing them upon your desk. "I do not believe any dangerous acts should occur if the people are happy. And I believe my current policies do just that."

Barrington shakes his head.

"No, no Princess..." he says. "The people are going to demand much more in the future. The further you give in to their demands and act lenient, the more reckless they will become. Please, think of all the noble houses that must start dealing with their workers taking example of the court and begin complaining. You are breaking tradition and customs."

Despite your refusal, Barrington continues to voice his opinion and it seems he will continue.

>tell him firmly that the meeting is over and the court will remain open
>chastise him for continuing to argue, ask him to leave
>tell him you might consider it later, but not now

"Enough, Lord Barrington," you say, your voice rising. "I have already stated my stance yet you continue to persist. Not only did you enter my office unannounced but you continually argue with my decision. Have you forgotten your manners? I ask that you leave me alone and give no further complaints."

Barrington goes silent and frowns. He stands there for a while, only looking back at you with a half-neutral look. After a while he shifts his weight and fixes his collar once again.

"Of course," he says smiling once again. "Please forgive me Princess, I simply was speaking fervently for the good of this kingdom and did not catch myself. Let me excuse myself out then."

Barrington turns to leave.

"I sincerely hope you shall not regret your actions, Princess," he says exiting out.

Looks like we're soon seeing our first assassination attempt, or at least made our first "enemy"
It was probably inevitable wih how our interests clashed with his...

Good thread again. I'm enjoying this relaxed quest. What are you rules of rolls. Are you going for two 1's make a 1 or is it always best of 3.
>>
>>42884075
Thanks for running the quest. It's great fun!

Finally we have our first enemy. At least we have some allies on our side too.
>>
>>42884120
I'll typically make it best of three. On circumstances deemed bad or unfavorable conditions I'll make it an average of three.

The natural 1 ends in failure, but the 99 counteracted it so I let it go. Normally though if you get a 1 it will end badly, unless counteracted by another roll of 90 and above.
>>
>>42884167
Nice, Nat 1 trump sucks. Either double 1's or 1 cause middle vote to win, or what you have done are so much better. Thanks.
