>Trym rolled 19 and 3. His ribs crack, reducing strength by 1!
>The White Wolf rolled a 4. It is engulfed in flame and won't stop bleeding!

The White Wolf's immense size and bulk slam into you, even as you pull yourself out of the way of its teeth and out-stretched claws! The impact lifts you off your feet and the harsh, grating crack of ribs pushed too far has Elia calling out your name in panic, from his safe haven up in the tree! The breath is driven from you as you crash to the ground, your spear jolted from your hands! In an instant, the White Wolf is upon you, teeth snapping at your neck, but even with spots swimming before your eyes, you still have enough awareness to bring the burning branch you hold around and jam it into the beast's maw!

The White Wolf howls in pain and tries to back away as fire spills from its mouth and pain becomes its whole existence! You don't let it escape though, grabbing a handful of its shaggy hair with one hand and snatching your knife from your belt! Your arm comes up and down again and again, stabbing in a frenzy as you struggle to roar a battle cry! Red blood flies in arcs, scattering over the snow as your knife plunges into the wolf's throat again and again, until finally, it shudders, strength leaves its limbs and it goes limp, crashing down half on-top of you and finally dying.
>>
>>43564818
You hear the sound of feet hitting the ground as Elia swings down from his tree and sprints over to you. Together, you heave the weighty carcass off your midsection, allowing you to breathe again and instantly give a croaking cry of pain.
"Your ribs are bad, brother," Elia says, helping you sit up.
"That's obvious," you groan bitterly. "Where's the rest of the pack?"
"They scattered when the white one ate fire and died. I've never seen anyone fight like that Trym, but you're hurt badly! What do we do? The elders are half a season away!"

>We have no choice, we'll have to turn back. At least we have a trophy.

You and Elia spend the rest of the night and the following day binding your wound and taking the white wolf to pieces. There's no time to clean its hide, but a basic scraping stops it from stinking and its meat is tough but edible. Its teeth, bones and claws will make for fine trophies, or even tools; they're sharp and large enough! The sheer weight and your injured state mean you can't take as much back with you as you want though and you're forced to leave all the bones save the skull.

The journey back is harrowing. You're further from the clan than you've ever been in your lives and with your injuries, the journey back is slower than coming out. You find yourself leaning more and more on your spear, or on Elia for support. As you break the cover of the trees, the open ground before the tribe, in the middle of winter, only promises to be even harder. There is a small hope however...

With the trees no longer blocking your view of the valley, you spy something down the frozen river... A thin train of grey smoke, hastily scattered by the wind. You point it out to Elia and he sees it just before it vanishes entirely.
"That's... Odd," he frowns. "Do you think another pair of fools left the clan? Or-" He gasps and his eyes widen. "Could it be another clan altogether?! They must exist, right? Strangers..."
"If they are strangers, they could mean us harm," you point out, wincing as you take the weight off your foot. It itches and you fight the urge to scratch the bindings.
"Good point," Elia agrees, "But they could also be friends? They look closer than our clan. They might be able to help your wounds..."

What will you do?

Holy shit, you guys keep rolling amazingly!

The trek across the snowy landscape of the valley is hard-going and many times, you're not sure if you're going to make it. Finally however, you find the source of the smoke. In a small depression near to the main river, you crest the rise to see six domes of animal skins stitched together, surrounding three central fires. Smaller, lightly snow-covered domes sit in a small cluster and have smoke pouring from their tops. Snow crunches under your boots as you and Elia stagger to a stop, the wind biting at you as you watch unfamiliar faces go from tent to tent, talking, fixing spears and other tools, eating, carving away at bones, or feeding wood and green branches into the smoking domes. It doesn't take long before you are spotted.

At first, the Strangers seem to think you're two of their own and call out to you, waving and smiling. As you draw slowly closer however, the smiles falter and vanish and alarm starts to spread through the small camp. You count maybe forty strangers; a large clan by most standards, but not as large as your own. As you near the ring of tents, a general cry of alarm goes up and you're soon confronted by a dozen of the clan's burliest men, pointing spears and suspicious looks in your direction. They don't speak any language you recognise, but Elia already has his sling out and is feeding a stone into it, getting ready to run. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea, brother..."

What do you do?
>Go for the closest one and try to overwhelm him suddenly. That should scare the rest; they seem skittish. 3d10 (Strength +Hunter)
>Drop your spear and spread your arms in friendship 2d10 (Charisma +Leader)

Lucky for you guys, I count the number of rolls on the majority choice, not just raw rolls. Besides, rolling "For titties" doesn't count... Yet.

Elia is reluctant to surrender his chance to strike first, but you place a hand on his arm and gently force it down. You step forward, keeping your speartip pointed at the ground. The placating gesture seems to calm the nervous strangers a little and a couple of them lower their spears. Most stay on guard however, as you try to make yourself clear. "We mean you no harm. N-o h-a-r-m." Well, speaking louder and slower just results in narrowed eyes, but you hastily make up for it. You back off a step or two and hold up one hand playacting, shrinking your stature. You've seen animals do this before; your body language alone is enough to say, "We don't want to fight you. We're peaceful and you're in charge here."

Slowly, one-by-one, the spears are lowered, or lifted away from being threatening and Elia breathes a sigh of relief. One of the strangers, a huge man with a bristling, dark beard and a powerful build slaps his gut and beckons for you to follow, turning back to the camp and shouting something in his odd language. As you take a step to follow him, your leg decides to send a pang of agony shooting through you and you hiss in pain. A few of the strangers notice and immediately go to help you. Elia slips his shoulder under your arm, less to support you and more to stay close with potential enemies nearby. You are shown to the centre of the camp and are given a seat on a fallen treetrunk by one of the fires. The large man gestures to a fine-featured woman you presume to be paired to him and she and her daughter hurry forward to peel the makeshift bandages off your wound.
>>
>>43568967
The sight isn't pleasant, but could be worse. No diseased flesh and though you'll have scars up your calf for the rest of your life, they seem to be healing well. The women prepare fresh moss, cobwebs and ligaments to bind your leg, as the big man sits to one side and slaps his own foreleg and grins, gesturing to the lacerations on yours and laughing. He seems to be pleased at the scars and shrugs back his cloak of heavy, dense fur to show off his arms, criss-crossed with marks you now recognise as signs of wrestling with a wolf or something like it. He lifts his jacket to show the canyon of a boar-tusk as well. Clearly, he respects a man with many scars, so perhaps coming to his camp and letting him see your wounds was a good idea.

Elia seems to realise this too and gestures to the women that your chest is hurt too. A few experimental probes and a cry of pain later and they seem VERY convinced that you are to rest RIGHT NOW and lie down. The big man seems to want your company however, so the women instead make you comfy on a pile of furs, as Elia shows off the white wolf's head and pelt from the travelling bag. This in particular gets a round of cheers from the strangers and they stamp the ground, cheering and slapping Elia and one another about their shoulders. The big man goes to do the same for you, but a glare from his woman has him sitting back down looking ashamed.

Food is soon passed around and to your surprise, it has an odd taste to it. It takes you a while to place it, but eventually you realise it tastes much like woodsmoke smells. More gestures later, the big man grins and points to the smoking domes you noticed earlier. With the help of his woman drawing pictures in the snow with a stick, you manage to understand that the smoke makes the meat last a long, long time. Many moons longer than if it were simply cooked! If your own tribe were to adopt this, they may not have to go hungry in winter's last days!
>>
>>43569116

HA! and they called our exploring useless, we should show them our sling
>>
>>43569116
And all it took was some broken ribs and a gored calf!

What would it take to learn the language?
>>
>>43569116
You and Elia are guests of the strangers for the rest of winter. Every time you go to leave, the woman or even her young daughter, no more than seven summers old, gestures and shouts at you to stay still and let your ribs heal. You even manage to learn a little of their tongue and get to know some of the tribe. The big man leads them, as the greatest and strongest hunter and able to throw anyone who says otherwise clear over a tent! The tents themselves are held up by the strangest thing you've ever seen; massive, curved bones that taper to a point at one end. Towards the end of your stay, you ask and are told these bones were passed down to the clan by their ancestors. None of them, even Myslik, the big man and their 'chief', has ever hunted a mamoth, although they have seen scattered herds in their wanderings.

The strangers have come from beyond the valley, but now they are here, it looks like they mean to stay for quite some time. As the snow thins, they start to see how the valley is a good place and much easier than the world beyond.

As spring finally comes, your wounds have healed and it is time for you to leave. You have learned enough to make yourself understood, but you are by no means fluent or even truly 'passable' in the new tongue. You're not the only ones to have learned either, as several members of the tribe, having been shown how Elia's sling worked over the winter, have started making their own. As you make ready to leave however, Myslik walks up to you.

"You good guest-friend. Good hunt. Small, but big soon, ha?" he laughs and claps your shoulder, a friendly gesture, you've learned, but his bear-like hand still staggers you. "You again! We hunt. Hunt good!" He smiles, but then turns serious and coughs. "Eat much. Good guest. Maybe you..." he struggles for the words and then points at your bags. Ahh, it seems he wants a gift, after you've stayed with him and eaten his people's food so long.

What do you do?
>Give him the wolf's head. It's a fine trophy at least
>Give him some of the wolf's teeth. They're sharp and fine and might make good fishing-spear heads.
>Give him some wolf claws. They're a bit small for a spear head, but could make a fine short knife!

>Give him the wolf's white pelt. It's an exquisite gift for the best of friends!

Both of these we did stay for an entire season with them, I would throw in the wolf's head too but I feel like we'll need the evidence when we get back to our tribe

Honestly I feel weird about him having to ask for the gift but that's partially my own deal and I suppose that there needs to be some work done for the rules of hospitality yet. We can be some of the first to set them up

Well, from his point of view, it's more of a trade. He put up two strangers with his tribe during the leanest time of year.

Anyway, votes called, writi- WHOA is that the time?! I think I'd better call it after this one tonight. I'll go on tomorrow morning/afternoon.
>>
Myslik nods appreciatively when you offer him the wolf's claws, although he was clearly hoping for more. When you offer him your spear though, he looks stunned! "Good gift-!" he tries to explain. "Very good! Hunt spear much, uhh- Good gift. Very-" Myslik struggles to find the words in his limited knowledge of your language, but he reverently takes your spear and pulls you into a crushing bear-hug that almost has your ribs cracking again! After he's let you down, you leave the strangers camp with shouts and waves to you. It seems giving Myslik your spear had some kind of importance to them.

"It seems you've got more than your share of luck, brother!" laughs Elia, as you trek back up the river. If you keep following it, you should soon find where your clan has moved to this spring. "Not only do you live through fighting a monster like that wolf, but we find friendly strangers who treat us like family over winter and even now, everything you try with them seems to turn out well!" He rolls his eyes and claps your shoulder; a gesture he's picked up, it seems. "Much more of this and even Mesut is going to be asking to join your hunting band!"
"Maybe if he asks very nicely," you agree with mock-seriousness, "And gives me that spear of his!" Elia laughs long and loud at that, sending spring birds flapping into the air at the sound.

It's not hard to find your tribe's camping grounds; they don't change much over the years. When you and Elia walk in though, there's a great uproar! Everyone though you were both dead! To see you both returned alive and in perfect health rattles everyone! you and Elia are the talk of the clan and everyone wants to hear where in the world you wandered off to! With a flourish, Elia produces the white wolf's head and pelt, to gasps and admiration from the tribe. He's reveling in it and especially in Galit's.
"Who killed the beast?" asks Mesut, nodding admiringly at the size of the pelt.
