You and Elia have returned to the clan after a long winter recovering from your injuries in the camp of the strangers from outside the valley. Your return was greeted with shock and surprise by your clan, when you find them in their spring camp. You and Elia were presumed dead after you wandered out into the winter snow. Your return, let alone your return with trophies from killing the great white wolf, is enough to stop every member of the clan, young and old and have them crowd around you, asking questions and making you both the crentre of attention! Elia in particular seems to enjoy being fussed over, especially by his erstwhile lover, Galit.

As you're showing off the white wolf's head and pelt, Mesut, the greatest hunter in the clan, nods admiringly. "Who slew the beast?" he asks.

What do you say?
>Tell the story as it was, no embellishment at all
>Share the credit for the deed. You and Elia both fought the beast
>Take full credit for killing the wolf. Elia only cowered in the tree 1d10 (Charisma)
>Emphasise your own role, but give mention of Elia slinging stones that kept the pack at bay or something 2d10 (Charisma +Leader)
>Downplay your deeds and make up something about Elia holding the hold back so you could slay it 1d10 (Charisma)
>Give Elia all the credit. He fought the wolf single-handed and you only waved fire at the pack to keep it away 1d10 (Charisma)

It's ridiculous enough as is.

Also, you should get a twitter for the quest, that way people know when it's running. I just stumbled on this on break.
>>

I know. I have been considering it... Not sure there's enough regulars to justify it though.

I'll give it another 10 minutes before I just call the vote and type. Hopefully we'll have a couple more players by then? If not, they might show up later...

As you relate the story to the tribe, interest starts to fade somewhat. Your lack of any embellishments or storytelling tricks doesn't do much to earn you an audience, especially among the younger members of your audience. Your honesty does earn you a few nods of respect from the elders however, as they care less for the grand gestures of youth. You notice in particular that Galit stops listening quite as much as you honestly tell of how you struggled against the wolf and Elia spent the fight safely up in the tree. For his part, Mesut merely nods, recognising your skill, but also the luck it took to survive.

The decline dramatically reverses however, when you reach your time with the strangers. At once, there's a sudden commotion within the clan. No-one seems to be able to agree what is to be done about it and even the elders seem at a loss. Everyone pays rapt attention as you explain where they come from, the language they speak and the strength of their leader. After much discussion among the elders and the entire clan (all of whom seem to have an opinion they want to throw into the debate, still no conclusion is reached and it seems the rough consensus is "If we leave them alone, maybe they'll leave us alone, or perhaps just leave?"

Do you wish to try and sway the clan's direction?
>No, there's enough space in the valley for both of us to stay out of one another's way
>Another clan could compete for food; it's better if we try and drive them out 2d10 (Charisma +Leader)
>A new clan means new friends! We should go and meet with them and build closer ties! 2d10 (Charisma +Leader)
>We should watch and observe, find out more without them knowing we're there to learn 2d10 (Charisma +Leader)

Sorry replies have been so slow this evening. I've been dealing with some personal trouble...

"My friends and Elders. I have spent a long long time away now and I have seen many things and learned many things. Fought vicious predators and braved vicious storms. But the most valuable thing was not the trophy I brought back, but the knowledge. While with this other tribe they showed me how to preserve meat better. Far better. With this new technique next winter we will not have to go through the lean month before spring. We can keep our kills longer and this is thanks to this new tribe.

Think on it like this. When I fought that wolf I emerged victorious, but it was a hard fight and I would have died in the next day if it weren't for Elia. By myself I could survive the fight but with someone by my side I could truly win. Think of what we could do with a whole other tribe by our side"

We'll keep this roll for next time. Tomorrow I'll be running a super-special bonus edition of this quest thread, to make up for the lacklustre showing tonight. I am truly sorry; sometimes life gets in the way. I hope you don't take this to much to heart.

This thread will not be archived, but I'll save the results so we can just go from here tomorrow.

See you all at 5pm eastern and I hope you can make it. I'll have to see about that twitter at some point...

Jesus Christ, you kept the thread alive all day? That's embarrassing. I could have just as easily made a new one, but... Thanks guys.

You stand and clear your throat. The bickering subsides a little around you, but those further away still argue about what should be done. All the same, you say your piece. "My friends and Elders. I have spent a long long time away now and I have seen many things and learned many things. Fought vicious predators and braved vicious storms. But the most valuable thing was not the trophy I brought back, but the knowledge. While with this other tribe they showed me how to preserve meat better." You're interrupted a little by scoffing, but the distrustful voices are shushed. Food is always a matter of interest for the whole clan. "Far better," you continue, "With this new technique next winter we will not have to go through the lean month before spring. We can keep our kills longer and this is thanks to this new tribe."

"Think on it like this. When I fought that wolf I emerged victorious, but it was a hard fight and I would have died in the next day if it weren't for Elia. By myself I could survive the fight but with someone by my side I could truly win. Think of what we could do with a whole other clan by our side."
"We have taken in other families before," points out Elia, "The Elders say so anyway."
"Mmmh, but none that are nearly our size, not like this," grumbles one of the elders. "There might be too many of them. They don't respect their elders either; only the strong leads them." He shoots a worried look at Mesut, who simply stares back unflinchingly.

Your words seem to have carried the day however and the clan agrees to send a party with gifts and words of thanks for the strangers keeping you and Elia safe through the winter.

Your luck and skill in persuasion has allowed you to gain a rank in the Leader job!

Smoking tech gets my vote, we did promise the tribe the new knowledge
>>
You wave the messengers away and wish them luck as they leave. If you can make yourself understood by Myslik's people, they should have no problem. You instead choose to busy yourself with whatever meat you can and try to re-build the smokers you saw at the strangers camp. The basic structure is easy - a mound of earth with a fire inside, but in principal, it turns out to be quite hard to construct. Elia is enjoying the spring, using his sling to fell birds for you to experiment with, but the main construction is up to you.

You think you have the rough design of the smoking dome, with sticks placed so you can hang meat inside to absorb the heat and smoke, but unfortunately, your design still encounters problems keeping the fire lit. For some reason, it refuses to stay alight, no matter how much you feed it. The smoke also doesn't leave the dome through the top, as it did for Myslik's clan, instead pouring out the bottom and making you choke. Clearly, you still have some ways to go before the design is perfected.

The clansmen sent to Myslik's tribe return at the mid-point of the season and they look concerned. Clearly, their visit didn't go quite as well as yours. They bring stories of difficulty making themselves understood and of the strangers hunting relentlessly. Some of the tribe dismiss them as worriers, but others fear that the strangers may tax the herds too much and cause a shortage further up the valley. Still, the strangers accepted the gifts and paid them back with hides and carved bones and antlers, so for now at least, relations are cordial.

It is now late spring and your food supplies are starting to run low. If you don't find something soon, you'll begin to starve.

What will you do?

Jesus fucking shit, you might not be far wrong!

Seeing as you've used most of your food, between your experiments and just plain hunger, you elect to head to the river to fish. As the weather is starting to get warmer, more and more fishers are heading to the river for their food. You wade knee-deep into the current, shivering slightly as you feel the traces of meltwater still present in the current from the mountains. At first, your catch is small, but respectable, but after a few days pass and you start building a bit of a surplus to see you through leaner times and help in your experiments, something odd happens...

As a catfish swims between your spread legs, you prepare to stab down, but are stopped by the sight of something deeper in the river; a shadow you've not seen before. Thinking it might be another pike for you, you wade deeper, about up to your waist (the river itself reaches your armpits at its deepest points) and look around. At first, there's nothing, but then, quite suddenly, a face looks up at you from beneath the water! It's distorted and ripples, even more so than the current should make it seem and you splash back with a cry! The shouting draws the attention of the other fishers, but once you explain what you saw and they search, they can find nothing.

Soon after, you find yourself at the centre of attention. Not of humans though, but of fish! They mob and flock around your legs and feet, bumping against you and even mouthing at your legs and toes. It becomes quite worrying when among the trout and catfish, you see the occasional pike, but it does come with its advantages. By the time the day ends, you've caught eight times what anyone else has! Every time your spear thrusts down, it seems to come up with a fish wriggling on it and within a few minutes, the whole swarm is back! You have your pick of every fish in the river!
>>
>>43630980
Your skill and luck at fishing have allowed you to gain your first level in the Fisherman job!

You may only have a maximum of three acive jobs and may only change during the change of seasons.

Your current jobs are Hunter 2 Craftsman 1 and Leader 2

Would you like to replace a current job with the Fisherman 1 job?
>>
>>43631011
Switch out Leader for Fisherman for now. We can switch jobs pretty easily right?
>>
>>43631031
You can change at the start of each new season, but not DURING the season itself. If you're caught off-guard by something, you're shit out of luck!
>>
>>43631041
Alright then. Hunter gets replaced for Fisherman.
>>
>>43631224
seconding this

Seems like we're having better luck with the fishies
>>
Your Hunter job is now inactive. It has been replaced by Fisher.

The year turns to early summer and you have enough food stockpiled to keep you for half a season.

Elia has been looking glum for a while now and seems to have lost interest in almost everything; he's even eating less, just picking at his food.

Brother Paku has been talking loudly and grumbling about how the elders seem to do nothing these days, while hunting is starting to get harder.

What will you do?

We can try and talk to people while doing craftsman rolls considering that we will be around the central place of the clan and such should have a easy time of it, unlike if say we were going hunting.... So I would urge everyone taking the craftsman roll to load up on talking to people when we can catch them in the camp. Fishing, hunting and gathering limits options and cuts time with travel but not so with craftsmanship.

Who knows? All you could tell was that it looked as if a face, reflected and distorted in rippling water, was the true face of something that was then further distorted by the water it was submerged in. All kinds of unsettling...

I may yoink that picture for... Other purposes however.

Now, this thread really doesn't need any further bumping. Discussions? Ideas and future plans? Great, go ahead, but otherwise, let it die. It just looks obnoxious otherwise, eh?
