You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You've finally arrived at the combined Tilean/Breton army camp, and the whole place was a veritable hive of activity. Despite having united, you could see that the Tileans and Bretons were still clearly delineated, with the camp being practically split in half. Then again, it was probably simpler that way. You could see the soldiers and knights from either side going about their regular duties. Bannon and Parker had gone off to debrief with Sawyer, but before they left, they had tasked you with overseeing Egan's studies of the recovered Reikland tech you had brought back with you.

"You've certainly brought back a lot of new toys." Egan says appreciatively, though her famously stoic face doesn't express it. She paces along the rows of Panther wreckage you had salvaged, as well as the intact undead soldiers you had seized from a cargo shipment.

"Well, this might take a while, and I'm just one scientist." Egan puts on a pair of work gloves and goggles. "What do you want me to work on first?"

Clem's just like the Wolverine series seems to be ending it's service life due to the new Panthers slowly being entered in.

While it has done well, unless we upgrade or get a new tank to deal with it, we may be facing some problems.
>>
>>43647296
We just need to replace the gun.

"How about we start with those undead troops?" You ask. "Now that we've got intact examples, maybe we can figure out a weakness."

"Hmmmm, that is true." Egan nods as she walks over to the inert corpses. "With intact specimens, we can better understand how the Reiklanders control them. Maybe figure out a way to disable them or even hijack their control signal."

"Can you really do that?" You blink.

"Possible." Egan says as she coolly begins dismantling the mechanical parts of one of the corpses. "But I'd have to do a deeper study."

"How long is it going to take?" Tarin asks.

"Hmmmm, it could take a while completely dismantling these specimens." Egan shrugs as she pulls out a particularly heavy looking component. "Perhaps your time would be better sent somewhere else for now."

Seeing as how we're still essentially nobodies in the eyes of Tillean command, I doubt we're going to get uber special VT's and I don't want a Brittonian one off.
>>
>>43647673
Hmm, This is also true, however I'm not sure what type of gun we can even equip a Wolverine, if it's based on the Sherman tank, the 76mm should be the limit unless we think of the Super Sherman.

Maybe adding more armor or better engine as well.

Point being, Clem is so banged up, we can replace the damaged parts with upgrades.
>>
>>43647705
Our gun did fine against the Panthers, it was just shot off. That's the main issue.

I don't mind trying to upgrade her a bit, but don't get too ambitious yet.
>>
>>43647705
There was a 90mm Sherman used as a demonstrator. But no, 76 is enough with better ammunition.

Am pretty sure that High Command or the equivalent would pay attention to the people who opened up a new Front.
>>

True, but I disagree about being too ambitious, I think it's this case it's a bit warranted if only to think of ideas on how to upgrade Clem.

>>43647743
Didn't that overstress the turret ring and the machine in general

Better ammunition sounds good.

Perhaps replace the damage armor in the hull with something more angler,or add shurzen.

A small mod like adding Smoke launchers on the side. .

Just checked, the M36B1 is literally an M4A3 with a 90mm turret plopped on top and the stowage rearranged. The turret was a bit unbalanced, but it worked just fine. Turret traverse was obviously slower, but considering the M4's fast turret traverse, wasn't much of an issue.

"We'll go check on our VT in the meantime." You say. "We'll drop by later to see what you find."

"Then it's a plan." Egan nods as she takes out a massive buzz saw.

You and Tarin quickly make your exit just as you hear the sound of flesh and metal being sheared apart by a giant steel saw.

"Good call. Sounds really messy in there." Tarin observes. "I'd hate to get that stuff all over us."

"Yeah, I figured." You grin.

The two of you head over to the motor pool, where you can see both the Tilean Wolverines and Breton "steeds" lined up next to each other. Of course, if there was one faction of the military that would get along well, it would be the mechanics and engineers. You could see teams from both sides examining each others' machines with much enthusiasm. Hopefully this kind of "friendly exchange" would yield some good results for both sides.

And then your good mood is ruined when you see Clementine. She had taken a serious beating during the battle against Hess, with her cannon having been completely destroyed and her armor in tatters from the punishment she endured. When the maintenance crews first saw her, they were about to write her off as a loss until a poisonous glare from Tarin changed their minds.

"So what's the verdict?" You ask the chief mechanic.

"She's a right mess." The chief mechanic grumbles, wiping excess engine grease from his gloves. "Still in one piece, miraculously enough, but her armor is slagged and the cannon is a complete loss. She's going to need a complete overhaul."

"Damn, how long would that take?" You frown.

"Thankfully, we've got a lot of spare parts, so if I can get a full crew on it, we can probably get her back up and running by tomorrow morning, though that's the optimistic guess." The chief mechanic frowns. "But I did get orders straight from Colonel Sawyer that since we're practically rebuilding your VT anyways, he was willing to give you access to some 'special gear.'"

"Really?" Your eyes widen. "For us?"

"Yep. Looks like the stories of you taking out Panthers left and right reached his ears, too." The chief mechanic nods. "And hell, we need a VT crew like you on the front in that case. Can't tell you how many VTs those bastards sent back here in pieces."

"All right, then what do you have?" You ask.

"Well..."

"What's this HVAP ammo here?" You ask, pointing to a crate of shells.

"Oh, that's High Velocity Armor Piercing ammunition." The chief mechanic explains. "New special issue ammo that just shipped in in response to the increased threat from Reikland heavy armor. Uses a tougher tungsten penetrator instead of steel, so it packs a bigger punch."

"Nice." You nod appreciatively. "That will be a big help for us."

"Yeah, you're one of the lucky ones." The chief mechanic grunts as he cracks the crate open. "So far we haven't been able to produce a big number of these shells, so it's being reserved for tank destroyers and platoon leaders only. You're definitely getting some special treatment here."

"That's... nice?" You blink.

"Take it from me, kid. Don't brag about having this stuff to anybody. It'll save you a lot of trouble." The chief mechanic warns.

"We'll keep that in mind." Tarin nods.

"Anyways, we got work to do, so you two should get going." The Chief mechanic waves you off.

You decide to go check in on Willem. Having seen the full Tilean army, he no doubt was having trouble adjusting to the new environment. You find him not very far from the motor pool, in an area set aside for the Bretons. There, Willem is sitting casually on top of his VT as he surveys the camp around him.

"Hey, Willem!" You wave and shout to get his attention. "How do you like seeing the Tilean Army?"

"It's... odd." Willem frowns. "All of your steeds... they look the same! How can you tell any of them apart?!"

You guys, I just got here to tell you something. I just woke up here, with a disturbing dream. It was about some commander guy sitting in front of a desk, handing a pamphlet to a young soldier, and the pamphlet had 'all about tiger tanks' as a title with a front view of the tiger tank. While the commander guy was handing it over to the blonde young soldier, he said something like 'tigers taking out 7~8 tanks in one hit, something something scary stuff'. "Hmmmm, I do see that, but why all the same color?" Willem narrows his eyes. "How can you tell which royal house they come from if they don't display their crests or sigils?"

"Royalty isn't really a thing in Tilea. The army is all volunteer, from all walks of life." Tarin explains. "I thought we told you this before."

>Excuse me my potential stupidity, but wasn't part of why the Tigers were so able to outfight the Shermans because the Tigers were explicitly made to fight other tanks while the Shermans were made as more generalist 'infantry support' vehicles?
No, fuck you. Tigers were designed as breakthrough tanks, to have the armor to take any hits that they might take, and the gun to be able to kill anything it would face.

The Sherman was designed as a medium tank, to have the speed and reliability to make it ideal for operational maneuverability. It had enough armor to take on anything it faced when it was introduced, and a gun that could kill anything as such.
>>
>>43649041
>>You're saying WE aren't honorably and chivalric?

The Sherman was not built to fight heavy tanks, it was built as infantry support and to fight Medium tanks or lighter.

However, the Sherman did well even when facing the Tiger but those are very, very rare.
>>

>You're saying WE aren't honorably and chivalric?

Honour can come in many forms; we care for prisoners of war, often shoot to disable tanks rather than kill their occupants, and do our best to not hurt civilians.

"Are you saying that WE aren't honorable and chivalric? You raise an eyebrow.

"N-no! I didn't mean that!" Willem says defensively, nearly falling off the top of his VT. "I mean to say that has the Breton style of fighting really fallen out of such favor?"

"Well, to tell the truth." You sigh. "There can be honor in a fight, but how you guys conduct war is a dishonor to modern warfare and the lives you are wasting needlessly."

Things go silent for what seems to be a very long time. Willem just looks away.

Kind of. It's more that they treated warfare more like some sort of idealized sport/game, and their way of glorifying warfare really fucked up with their society & perspective of reality on a lot of things.

The clans that survived beyond the Jihad era shaped up real quick, though they still retain many traditions and such from their earlier days.

"Hey, sure." You nod as you follow Tarin. She quickly leads you to the edge of the camp. It was actually kind of a custom she had picked up, patrolling the perimeter of every new camp she encountered. "You really want to do a perimeter check?"

"Can never be too careful." Tarin says simply as she looks around. Naturally, at the edge of the camp, the tents gave away to a large space of cleared ground, in order to make it easier to detect possible intruders as well as deny attackers cover. She heads right for the treeline just beyond this defensive zone.

"Aren't we venturing out a bit too far?" You ask cautiously.

"We won't go any farther than the outer patrols and outposts." Tarin assures you. "I just want to get the lay of the land."

"Understandable." You nod.

You spend the next fifteen minutes or so just wandering through the forest, though the sounds emanating from the camp always remind you that it's not too far. However, even just have a few trees between you and the camp feels like you're isolated in the middle of nowhere.

Suddenly, Tarin grabs you and pulls you around a tree, pinning your back to the trunk. Her face is so close, you can smell her breath, feel the heat emanating from her face...

"We're being followed." Tarin whispers.

Goddamnit.

"By who?" You whisper back as you crane your head around.

And there, you see four Breton squires, creeping into the clearing, following the trail you made. Three of them are armed with knives and short swords, while one in the back is armed with a hunting rifle. The slowly spread out and pace the clearing like predators hunting their prey. Definitely not friendly.

Fortunately, they didn't know they were hunting better predators.

"Amateurs." Tarin mutters. "Might as well be stomping through with steel boots."

"Looks like they lost track of us for the moment." You whisper back. "We can just shake them off and report this to Artois."

"Not an option." Tarin scowls as she draws her own knife.

Falling back on your experience, you and Tarin quietly sneak away, dashing from tree to tree to keep out of sight of the squires. Sure, these squires may be experienced in hunting game, but they never had to hunt or elude PEOPLE. Countless were the times you and Tarin had to hide or flee from Drachman bandits. In just a few minutes, you're behind the little group and already on your way back to the camp, though you and Tarin keep a close eye out for any additional enemies.

"What should we do about this?" Tarin asks. "We can't very well let those guys wander around the camp."

"I don't know." You frown. "Reporting this risks putting a strain on the alliance. It could be better that we deal with this quietly."

Artois may know which lords aren't happy about this arrangement, and Sawyer could notice if a Breton unit starts acting suspiciously during a battle.

Have you figured out quick reply yet? You see the post number? To quickly reply to a post, click on that number. Not the "No.", but the number itself. That brings up the quick reply. Now, if you highlight any writing on the page and quick reply with it still highlighted, it will automatically copy and paste that over, with a">" in front of it. This allows you to quickly respond to a point.

Dubs are when the post number ends in two of the same number. Trips end with 3 of the same, etc. For some ungodly reason, kids think it's the second coming of Christ, and so will "check" the dubs, saying that they see that they are dubs, or trips, or whatever.

Also, hello Secondnewfag.

"We'll tell both Sawyer and Artois." You conclude. "This is big enough that I think we need to involve both of them."

"All right." Tarin nods. "You lead the way. I'll keep an eye out."

You make a beeline straight for the command tent, where both Sawyer and Artois had set up a joint headquarters. The sentries posted around the tent give you a wary eye, but when you identify yourself, they step aside to let you pass. Was your name really that famous around here now?

Nonetheless, you're led into the main command tent, where Sawyer, Artois, and a number of other officers from both armies were gathered.

"Powers, I didn't expect to see you here." Sawyer grunts, looking a bit annoyed. "Why are you here, soldier?"

"Sir, I've come across some very sensitive information." You say, standing at attention and keeping as straight as you can. "Perhaps we can speak in private with you and Lord Artois?"

Sawyer pauses and looks over to Artois, who gives a trusting nod. Sawyer then turns to the rest of the assembled officers.

"You all have your assignments. Dismissed." Sawyer grunts, and the officers stand up and silently file out of the tent, none of them voicing a word of protest.

"All right, soldier, what's so important that we had to postpone an important strategy meeting?" Sawyer growls as Artois steps to his side.

"Sir, with all due respect, we just narrowly avoided a possible assassination attempt." You explain.

Sawyer's eyes widen just a bit, while Artois slams his hand down on the table.

"Who would be so crass as to commit such a dishonorable act?!" He barks in outrage.

"Four armed Breton squires tailed us."

"Impossible!" Artois recoils.

"That's a serious accusation." Sawyer narrows his eyes. "And one that could put this whole alliance at risk. Are you sure?"

"I remember that all four squires were bearing a crest." Tarin speaks up. "A dove with an arrow through its heart. Does that sound familiar to you, Lord Artois?"

"Impossible." Lord Artois' expression goes dark. "That would be Lord Kalendor's crest. I know we have had our differences but..."

"Maybe it was an attack of opportunity by the squires? They could be acting on their own." Sawyer suggests.

"Impossible." Lord Artois shakes his head. "A squire could never do anything without explicit approval from his Lord. No, this would have to trace back to Lord Kalendor himself or one of his knights."

"I get the feeling that he'll just throw one of his knights to the wolves if we ask him about it." Sawyer says.

"If he has committed treachery, we can force him to admit it with an honor duel." Lord Artois huffs. "He can't afford to lose his image now."

"If he's not playing for now, what makes you think he'd play fair then?" Sawyer points out.

"Well, let's confront him then. The Breton way." You say.

"Well, you know more about these people than I do, so I'll let you call the shots on this one." Sawyer grunts. "But I'll increase the number of guards, just in case."

"Why would this Lord Kalendor want us dead, anyways?" Tarin asks.

"Well, Lord Kalendor has ties with Lord Sylvan's faction." Artois sighs. "Perhaps he feels the need to impress him, or maybe the Reiklanders promised something to him that was worth throwing his honor away. Either way, we will rectify this."

"So what do we do?" You ask.

"I will issue a formal challenge to Lord Kalendor to account for his crimes." Lord Artois explains. "There would be an official inquiry, though of course, the accused may opt for a trial by combat. You should know what that means."

"Yeah." You nod. "You aren't planning to fight it yourself, will you?"

"If I must." Artois says grimly. "Though champions are allowed to fight in one's stead, it is generally frowned upon unless both sides agree to send a champion."

>Good luck, then.

"You're too important to risk losing, Lord Artois." You point out. "You're the leader of the Breton army. If you die, then the whole alliance can crumble. Let us be your champions. Nobody could say anything in that case."

"Hmmmm, you're quite right." Lord Artois nods. "I do not like the idea of good men and women fighting on my behalf, but your words have merit."

"Goddamn it's getting positively medieval in here." Sawyer groans.

"Then come. We make the challenge." Lord Artois sweeps his cloak around as he marches out of the tent. You and Tarin really have no choice but to follow.

"This I have to see." Colonel Sawyer mumbles as he follows as well.

Lord Artois marches to the Breton side the camp, stopping at a tent flying the colors of the sigil Tarin had described, a dove with an arrow through its heart.

"KALENDOR!" Artois bellows. "SHOW YOURSELF!"

No answer.

"KALENDOR!" Artois bellows again.

Again, nothing happens. Artois nods to his bodyguards, who rush forward and slash open the tent to reveal that it was empty.

"Damn! The bastard cut and run!" Sawyer seethes and turns to his own men. "Secure the perimeter! Nobody gets in or out of this camp!"

"To flee rather than stand and fight..." Artois stands there in shock. "Lord Kalendor is truly lost, then."

"Not only that, but he's been in our camp. He knows our numbers and dispositions." Sawyer growls. "If he gets back to the Reiks, that's going to be a huge intel boon for them!"

"No, this is our failure, we shall deal with it." Lord Artois says grimly. "With the haste with which he fled, he could not have gotten far. I will organize a hunting party and track him down first thing in the morning."

"Include us in the hunt then." You step forward. "We were his targets, so we have a stake in this too."

"It'll also make sure Tilea is involved in this as well." Tarin says, eyeing Sawyer.

"I can think of no finer companions on a hunt." Lord Artois nods. "Unless your Colonel has any objections?"

"None at all. Give 'em hell." Sawyer finally grins a little. "I'll make sure your VTs are ready by the morning."

"Just like back home, eh, Tarin?" You grin, nudging her a bit.

"If you say so." She shrugs.
