A small problem has arisen with your experimental field, or rather, not so much a problem as an observation. Wild birds seem to have taken a liking to so much free food in one place and routinely raid the seeds and saplings. Ebba and Sera have made a game of chasing them off, but you can't help but feel this is again something the wolves could solve. But how could you go about taming them?

The answer, of course, is simple; food. You take a few scraps and wait near the refuse pile near dusk, when the lean outcasts start sniffing around. You have little success at first, as the wolves keep their distance and flee when you approach - apparently neither brave or desperate enough to attack you so near to your own 'pack'. Over time however, you leave the meat for them to take. It's good food, much better than the cast-offs your clan throws away and they seem to start getting used to it, allowing you to approach a little more each night, although they growl warningly if they think you're going after their meal. One night however, you have an unexpected visitor. Soqed is waiting for you, sitting on a mound in the earth and idly twisting his spear in his hands. He regards you curiously. "What in the world have you been up to?" he asks. He doesn't seem angry, thank goodness, but rather just confused.

Soqed nods towards the runts, who are very definitely keeping a respectable distance; the pack alpha feeds first and they are so far down the food chain it's not even funny. "You've been giving them food? Why? They've not done anything for you and can't do anything. The only reason I'm not insulted is that the rest of your pack are still leaving me meat when they return from their hunts. But these aren't what I am - they aren't even part of the pack! So why are you wasting good meat on runts and outcasts?"

Even if they're too weak to hunt, they're still able to scare off pests. And then we'll have more food from the plants, which means we'll need less from the hunts, which means we can leave a greater portion of our catch to you. Everyone gets more to eat, in the end.

I wonder...it was mentioned that the way we're avoiding depleting the aurochs herd is by being selective with which ones we kill. No breeding-age females, limited numbers of breeding-age males. You think that might be enough of a selection pressure to start domesticating them, too? It could lead to the development of mild neoteny so that they can breed earlier, and while the degree to which neoteny plays into domestication has become disputed in recent years, it's still agreed that it plays a role. Maybe once we've gotten the hang of domesticated canines we can try taming the aurochs.

Soqed snorts. "And you won't just hunt less, because you're getting more food from plants? I don't believe you." He pushes himself up and smacks the dust off his pants. "You want the runts in your pack, that's your choice, but they'll just eat more for no gain. There's a reason we threw them out, after all." As he turns to walk away in the usual lope he has as a human, he stops, lupine ears pricking. "You've been getting attention lately," he grunts. "Others like me and the river are watching you and your pack. What do you think it was like when your kind first looked at one another and themselves and saw they were different to the rest of the animals? We're having that same moment, one-by-one. You humans ought to start paying attention. We can be a lot of help, or a lot of harm, depending." With the warning, he slinks away into the gathering shadows and the runts tentatively come forward for their evening meal.

The days keep turning and the nights grow gradually longer. The leaves start changing and a chill enters the air. It is early fall. The plants you started growing still aren't quite ripe, but they should be, before winter. You have only enough food to feed half your family until mid-fall.

No, see, Soqed, while the plants will provide calories they can't provide all of the nutrients we need. Maybe you don't get this, being an obligate carnivore, but humans work best if we eat a wide variety of foods. We'll still need to hunt in about the same amounts we've been doing already so we can get nourishing organ meats and fat, but now we'll need the muscle tissue less so we can give it to you.

Honestly, stone-age metabolisms were more robust than our more modern ones. Their bodes were very adapted to getting by on whatever was available, rather than having to consciously maintain the balance, like we do. Our diets are probably healthier, but they got by in ways we modern humans couldn't.
>>
>>44175857
He wouldn't know the technicalities, but he'd know the general idea. He'd know that without eating organ meat you get sickly, or that fat makes a meal more filling and last longer, things like that. Wild animals know that much, a human certainly should, too. The body has a pretty good instinctive understanding of things like that. It's been observed that herbivores will favor specific plants when suffering from a vitamin deficiency, for example, since the plants with the vitamins they need will smell better at that point. So it's not too far off to think that even a paleolithic human would know about the health effects of his diet.

We should really start trying to talk to spirits
>>
>>44177088

Agreed, course we need to find the time for it which I really like how RWB keeps the food as our top priority with our family relying on us but at the same time seems like we should be able to fit in more stuff with the time we have. Maybe have different sorts of actions for a turn, passive and active?

Not a true complaint, just an idea
>>
>>44178076
Well hopefully once we get agriculture down and accepted, along with possible cow/goat domestication, we'll have more time to actually do cool shit. This is only the first generation after all.
>>
>>44178096
We probably will only have time to really do stuff once we become elders.
>>
>>44178161

That's true

>>44178096

The thing that is really weirding me out on it is that, overall, hunter-gatherer societies had more time "off". The advent of agriculture brought more consistent and easier, after a fashion, food but it took more time to take care of enough space to properly feed a family.

Despite your bold words to Trym, you're acutely aware that you're no-where near able to supply enough food for your whole family just yet. Your small garden might not even provide enough for ONE person to get through the winter, much less everyone for a year. You're still very much reliant upon hunting and gathering still. Luckily, the strain on the aurochs herds, while significant from your hunting, isn't enough to have completely destroyed them yet, though a few have moved away.

You bring home plenty of steak for your family, coupled with ribs, legs and other great slabs of meat, ready to be smoked and dried and kept until the start of winter. You have a little left over that could see someone through until mid-winter, but not nearly enough to go around. You may need some help, as one man's effort just isn't enough to feed four, it seems, without great luck and skill.

It is now late fall and finally, the harvest is ready. Your little garden is filled with golden grain just waiting to be harvested. Beren especially is impressed at both the convenience of the food and the ease at which your two little girls can hide among the crops, catching mice and shrieking in delight.

What will you do? The field is small enough that Beren and your girls can harvest it by themselves, giving you one additional unit of food - enough to feed a single person for half a season.

>while significant from your hunting, isn't enough to have completely destroyed them yet,

We need to reconsider the aurochs hunting, before we destroy this herd. Between Soqed and us it's worrisome that we seem to hunt every season.
>>
>>44180451
At least we are trying to get an alternative source of food.
>>
>>44180509
We need to make the fields bigger and get more people working them.
This transitory period is going to be crucial because if we fail to slow our hunting the aurochs will leave the area and force us to relocate greatly weakening both our position in the tribe and setting back our agriculture and if we jump too fast into the farming there are going to be lean years that might cost lives and weaken our standing in the tribe.
>>
>>44180437

You guys could fish from time to time. Just saying.

Your actions don't effect the entire clan's habits, but when the aurochs are hunted, a lot tend to die at once, as you can't really just pick off one or two of the big bastards, the way you can with deer.

Interesting ideas. It'd take an action to do them however. The issue is that other than the aurochs, there are no large prey animals in the area. The goats and deer are further up the valley. Then again...

Unsatisfied with the hunt last season, you return to the herds, fearful of the prospect of having to hunt in winter, or let your family starve. In spite of the diminishing herds, you can only guess that you're becoming a victim of your own success. With your long practice and well-honed technique, you're fairly sure you could face down the stampeding herd and still take your pick of the females and bulls alike. You don't of course; partly due to the risk, but also because you don't want the more inexperienced hunters trying to copy you.

As you return with your share of the meat - more than enough to keep your family through to spring, you feel a hand on your shoulder.
"We need to talk." It's Mesut, his handsome face looking usually grim. "Sorry to disturb you, especially after a good hunt. I know you've got to be eager to get that lot grilling, but we need to have words about the herd. Fall's busy, but stop by my home once the snows fall, will you?" He claps your shoulder and smiles. "Best of luck to you."

Mesut doesn't have long to wait. The first winter snows come a little early this year and soon the world turns to the quiet of winter.

You have enough food to see you through to spring. Honestly, your hunting has been so successful lately, that the grain you grew is more or less superfluous. Beren has claimed it as something for her own experiments, although you expect one of those is, 'How long can the girls be kept amused by grinding grain into flour?

Mesut welcomes you into his home gladly. "We've important matters to discuss, but first, you are my guest!" He grins and smacks your back in the strangers style. He must have been spending more time with them than you realised, as you recognise some of the decorations around his house as being inspired by their stylistic patterns. Your people are very literal, the pictures they marked on the rock walls up the valley and now on the hides and supports of their homes mostly detailing events or stories as they are, but the strangers it seems are big into metaphor and painting things larger than life. There's also hunting trophies around, all carved the same way as the bone spearhead Mesut gave you for Noh. The skull of the largest aurochs bull you've ever seen looks down from the ceiling into the fire. You can remember Mesut leaping on its back, gripping around his neck and stabbing with his knife a good seventeen times (you counted) before it went down and he rose, his arms slick to their elbows in the beast's blood, so hot on a cold day that it was steaming.

"You have the best seat," he grins, guiding you to the fire. "You know my women and my children, yes?"
The rest of Meust's family doesn't bother you, as he re-introduces you to people you already halfway-know. His oldest son, Gence, is already shaping up to be a copy of his father. After Gence comes Sule, his first daughter and Velit, his younger son, still young enough to be sucking on his hand for comfort as he hides behind his mother. His last daughter, Yeliz, is still just a child being cradled by her mother. You can't help but feel a brief moment of jealousy. Mesut is strong, canny, good-looking and talented, the women his is bonded to are some of your clan's most beautiful and his family is large and powerful. Who wouldn't be a little jealous?
>>
>>44192782
Mesut takes his seat next to you and Gence brings you both food. The fur that covers the shaped log you sit on is new... It seems Mesut's been trading what he can't use himself to the strangers further up the valley. Even though you're the one who lead everyone here, you wouldn't call yourself a 'chief' really, not in the same way Myslik is. Mesut, meanwhile, certainly has the appearance of it, if not the influence. After you've eaten and been shown hospitality (a new innovation, it seems. Mesut must be hopeful the strangers will come to him in the future, if he's laying all this on), business begins.

Your host sighs and looks you in the eyes, frowning slightly. "I don't want to mince words," he admits. "You've noticed too, haven't you? We're hunting too quickly. It used to be that we had plenty to gather in the forest and fish made much of our food, but every season, there's less and less who go fishing and more who want red meat. I don't think we could kill the aurochs fast enough to wipe them out, not really, but we are in danger of driving them away. And no-one is listening when I tell them to cut back."
"I have noticed," you admit, nodding, "But what can you expect? Red meat is heavier and heartier than fish and we can kill plenty of them in one go by trapping them, not like when we had to stalk deer and goats for a day or more just to get two or three."
"Heh... And I made the way we hunt now," Mesut laughs. "I guess I'm at fault too, in a way! But what are we going to do about it? If this keeps up..." He lets the dread notion hang in the air like the smoke from the stone-lined firepit.

I do not like this Idea.

He is our only rival for chief and you are strengthening his position, by introducing him to Soqed. That is bad if we want a position as leader.
>>
>>44194619
Oh, well shit. That makes sense.
>>
>>44194619

We're already recognized as a leader and that is why I said that we should lead our own group of people as well. At that point we are both organizing the tribe along more manageable lines and building a base of support for ourselves. He leads the Hunters, we lead the Fishers, introducing him the Soqed means that we can continue to get the support of the spirit there and we get to restrengthen our ties to the River whom we have a closer connection to anyways.

We cannot do everything in the tribe ourselves and delegating is something any good leader should do. Politically we are actually building a good support base from him because we have heard his concern and are addressing it. If we can become the problem solver he turns to then we are only strengthening our position of power.
>>
Might I suggest we both voice our concerns togetherness the tribe, then while we try to commune with some spirits and maybe ask them for help, have our friend here go talk to the strangers and figure out how they eat.

What happens with that Art Friend acquired skill point?

Adding to this let's explain our plant project, say how it's got a bit of a way to go but it is a renewable source of food
>>
>>44194932
>>44194958

If we serve the tribe a feast, recruit Beren into preparing foods with the wheat. If we do this, we will need fish, which may require river spirit help.
>>

I thibk we should heed the warnings and commune with other spirits, if we get anything they may give us more options or even advice/ideas
>>
"Well... I have been working on something," you hesitantly say. "It might help matters."
"I'm listening," Mesut nods. "Is this going to be another of your weird ideas? Like the slings?"
"Sort of." You explain your idea for growing all the food the tribe could ever need, right where it's easy to harvest too. "All we'd need is land. It's not like there's any shortage of places grass can grow."
"Still..." Mesut has listened politely until now, but he wears a disgusted and disdainful expression, "Eating grass? I would if there was nothing else, but Trym, that's the mark of animals, not people!"
"Not the grasses," you sigh, "The seeds. They can be crushed into a powder which Beren coats meat with. It tastes good! But there has to be other uses too and if nothing else, the seeds can be eaten themselves." You can see he's not convinced, so you try another angle. "I can also see if I can convince some of the others to go back to fishing. Once they see the sense, no-one can deny that forcing the herds away is a bad thing. But still, growing plants can do great things for us, Mesut! It promise you, it's the future of the tribe, free from any need to rely on the vagueness of prey." You have some other ideas in that regard, but they can wait until your trials with the wolves bears proverbial fruit.

Why did you not come sooner?

Hey we still got a 22. So hopefully we don't fail too badly.
>>
>>44196680
A 22 is not bad, it's well above average
>>
>>44197409
Yeah but the DC could be above average as well.

I mean, why would it? It's obvious the herds are thinning, so it shouldn't be that hard to convince them to stop. Maybe it'd be hard to get them to eat plants, but otherwise
>>
"Well..." Mesut considers it for a moment, then seems to have an idea. A smile spreads over his face as he nods, rubbing his chin. "Yes... Yes, this could actually work! Hah and with plants, it's not like you have to run after the things; you can just sit around and wait for them to grow." It's not quite that simple, but his acceptance seems a good sign. "Very well. I'll support your odd plan, but on one condition: My family will be the ones to tend to the harvest and portion out the seeds. Agreed?"
"Agreed!" That seems a small price to pay for the support of possibly the most influential man in the clan who's not over the hill. You shake on it and share meat for the rest of the evening, before heading home full of roast aurochs beef and hope for the future.

You wake the next day, to an unfamiliar smell. As you sit up, you find Beren grinning smuggly by the fire, with a stack of something round, white and a little bit burned next to her.
"I found something interesting," she purrs, clearly more pleased with herself that you've ever seen before. Sera, seeing you're awake, grabs the top circle and runs over to you, folding it over and holding it up.
"Da! Open wiiiide!" You warily oblige and she pushes the folded... Thing between your teeth. Its taste is unfamiliar... Savory, light and wholesome.
"What do you think?" Beren asks. "I mixed that flour with some water and of the fat from the last herd you slaughtered. I think it came out rather well, although it could maybe do with some kind of filling..."

Beren has discovered how to make unleavened bread; tortillas, in fact!

Afraid that's it for tonight. Sorry this thread's been a bit thin. Things have come up today that were neither pleasant, or avoidable.

I'll see you all on Thursday for the next thread! Same time, same place, same as always! Have a good one, everyone and stay safe.

I'm glad you guys are here. No-one else seems to be.

Thanks for the run RWB. Always enjoy it. One of the best quests I've been a part of

Thanks for running RWB, I hope life doesn't throw anything at you that you can't handle. And if it has don't hesitate to ask for help.

Thanks for running man. This quest is my favorite thing on /tg/, and I dont see anything taking its place!

>>44198620
>>44198637
>>44198667
Much as the praise warms my cold, wary heart, I really don't understand it...

There's better-written, faster quests on /tg/ with bigger communities (though where that Greek and his damn shipsluts have GOT to, I have no idea...) and I don't draw or anything to accompany things... Even the characters, I always feel as if need more characterisation. I didn't even MENTION Mesut's wives (not that your tribe has formal marriage as yet anyway) and his kids got only cursory mentions... Even my use of emotive language is slipping.

I'll try and fix all this and anything else that's brought up, but still... Why?

>>44198558
We love ya man, take care yourself
>>
>>44198813

Well first off while there might be better written quests out there (though that is a matter of opinion at least as far as preference goes) it's not like we're drowning in them.

You are a good writer and even better you are a good QM. You work with the players choices and keep the environment organic. We aren't handed anything on a silver platter but our efforts are rewarded and we can see where good ideas pay off.

As far as further characterization of the tribe if you feel like you need to do more then go for it. But the most important character, us, we have a good grip on. Which is even more challenging in quests because of the fact that you cannot guarantee that the same people are even playing.

Plus you found a good niche, exploring a time period and a universe that obviously people like but not many people write for. So we'll keep coming back and I hope you do too for as long as you still love this idea and enjoy writing it. Never forget you're supposed to have too.
>>
>>44199002
Couldn't have said it better myself.
>>
>>44198813
>>44199002
I second this, you're a decent writer and a great QM. You've paced our character and tech progression quite well, and you're covering a niche that people want but hasn't been done too well. I've maybe seen maybe two quests set in the stone age, one died two threads and one is the Tribe on anonkun.

The Tribe, while not bad, has terrible problems with power creep. The character and his fantasy tribe has progressed too quickly and too fast for it to be as meaningful. Trym and his tribe on the other hand have worked for what they've got, and while there are magical elements in your quest you haven't let them overshadow the story.

So yeah, you're doing a good job, and I mean that sincerely. I won't tell you to not beat yourself up about it, because I've had issues with low self-esteem myself. All I'll say is please consider what we've said as genuine, and try and think on that when you're feeling down on yourself.

>our efforts are rewarded and we can see where good ideas pay off
Heh, ohhh you wait until you see some of the disasters I have planned to shake things up (and the good stuff too, of course). Who remembers Khoine's dear little brother? Heheheh... But thanks. I do my best to make sure things are challenging, but fair. Keep in mind though...

You haven't truly failed yet.

>a time period and a universe that obviously people like but not many people write for
This is just for now. God knows where this quest will ACTUALLY end, but I've got things planned all the way into space travel and inter-stellar drives. Of course, that's so far off it's not even funny. Your whole world is this little valley and you don't even have an inkling of all ITS secrets yet! Let's focus on agriculture first, then society, THEN we can look at real technology and the wider world.

Or do it in another order and stumble into things you're not ready for. That's more fun for me anyway!

>>44199410
>while there are magical elements in your quest you haven't let them overshadow the story
There's a lot more to magic in this world than you might expect. You've only met two of the gods thus far and only from one 'species' of them... But I think I've maybe said too much.

Thanks guys. I will admit that much of the tribe is badly fleshed out, as I didn't even know if this quest would live past three threads. Once you reach the next generation, things shoooould be more ready for you? Hopefully? Until then, I'm 90% bullshitting this. Anyway, I'll see you next time. Stay safe.

>>44199531
Hey, improvising in story telling/bullsbitting is as important as having a well-thought outline
>>
>>44199620

Wait, people use well thought out outlines?
