"You... You are Kaito?" she asks, dumfounded.

"No, no I am not," Otiak insists. "This is only a trick."

She scans her eyes up and down his saurian form, searching for any hint that may reveal him. "It cannot be," she says softly.

"And it isn't. I'm not Kaito."

"Nothing on the outside would suggest it, but when she said that you are, why did you not react?" she asks.

"I was... confused," he lies. "I was trying to figure out her plan. It must have been to confuse you."

After a moment, she slowly nods. "I admit, I was not prepared for such a thing... But how do I know for certain?"

Otiak holds up a hand. "Please, just trust me. We need to get to your family and set this right---all of this is just a distraction. The 'thing' we dare not speak of is trying to stall us."

"You're right, about that at least," she says, some suspicion remaining in her voice. "But I still don't know what to truly think about you."

She steps in close. "But, if you are truly Kaito... Please, just tell me. Whisper it."

Alright, I know I left the last thread on a cliffhanger and there would need to be some discussion about our response, so I went for a fast grocery run and left it open. I'm back and am writing the next part now that there's been a few proposals.

Otiak slowly leans in. "There's more going on here than both of us can know. Who I really am doesn't matter, because if we don't stop this thing, it will destroy everything. Anything that ever was or will be, gone."

He looks Mileena in the eyes once more and says, "And any chance of you ever seeing Kaito again will go with it."

She stares back with uncertainty, but only initially. After a moment, she nods, affirmed by his words. Her resolve returns as she whispers back, "Then whoever you are... Bring him back. Please."

Otiak nods as they part. It is still early in the morning, but they are both wide awake and ready to move.

Far in the distance, the Netherrealm portal has grown larger, reaching up into the clouds like the roots of a tree, widening the gap between the two realms. He knows that time is short before Shinnok's reach exceeds to all of Edenia.

They are faced with the mountains before they can reach King Jerrod's temple.

Otiak looks at Mileena as they near the mountain's lowest slopes. "What dangers might we face in these mountains?"

"These mountains represent a border to southern territories of Edenia that are not as peaceful as those ruled by the royal family."

"Meaning what, exactly?"

"Great beasts lair in these lands. If we cross the mountains, we may face them. We haven't been discovered by any flying demons yet, but that may also be a possibility."

"Any good underground routes?" Otiak suggests.

"I know of a river underground that runs through these mountains, but it is said to be cursed. Kitana and Sindel would not speak of why."

"I know the way, but I have not gone before," she says. "Kitana brought me to the mouth of the cave once before."

"And she never told you what was inside?"

"No."

Mileena leads Otiak to a nearby grotto, where a small river eventually feeds into a cavern. She steps into the water, which is initially very shallow but becomes waist-high in short time.

They begin wallowing through the water, into the cave proper. The interior is strangely blue, and shimmers due to many large crystals in its walls.

"Beautiful..." Otiak says to himself.

"Beautiful things can often be very deadly," Mileena says, looking over her shoulder before adding, "and deceptive. We must be silent."

Otiak moves very silently, but finds himself drawn to look at the beautiful crystals. Experimentally, he reaches out and touches one of them...

When he does, there is an echoing howling throughout the cavern. Mileena takes out her sai blades and scans for an enemy, but sees none.

"What happened?" she asks in a whisper.

"I have no---"

Otiak begins to speak before the crystal wall at his side suddenly bursts in a spray of shards, knocking them both into the water. When they resurface, the crystals orbit a spirit, a humanoid ghostlike form who looks at them with hollow eyes.

"You dare intrude in my domain?" he asks in a faraway voice. "You will suffer, as I have suffered, trapped here for thousands of years!"

The ghost has no physical form, but he brings the crystals around him to create one. The crystal golem is eight feet tall, with balled fists and crystalline spikes emerging from its back and arms.

The golem leaps into the water, prepared to crush them both.

Thankfully, Otiak recovers fast enough and slides out of the water, pulling Mileena with him before the golem can attack them in the water, where they would have a disadvantage. Now up on the rocky shore, they back away as the golem advances.

Otiak attempts an escape, but the crystal golem grows a sword-like crystal spike and shoots it forward in a lunging attack, managing to impale the saurian through the leg. Mileena sees this happen and uses the pommel on her sai to smash the crystal before teleporting above the golem to kick it away.

Otiak falls back against the cavern wall with part of a crystal spike still stuck in his leg. He grunts before pulling it out, the wound leaking rather generous amounts of green blood onto the floor.

As he attempts to recover and seal the wound with his acidic spit, Mileena battles the golem, keeping out of its surrpisingly fast reach through teleporting and rolling around between its legs.

With the chunk of crystal in hand, Otiak forms a plan. He waits until the golem has its back to him before launching a spit of acid at its back, followed by a force ball in the same spot to weaken it further. He lunges forward and stabs the green bloody crystal into the golem, prying open a hole in its back.

When he creates the opening, the spirit within can be seen; the wispy, white ghost. He turns his head to look at Otiak through the hole and causes the golem to turn around by literally flipping its crystal limbs around to attack the saurian, pushing him back with its wide, swinging blows.

As Otiak dodges them, despite his weakened leg, he formulates a plan: the spirit must be the weak point, protected by all that crystal armor! But how to create a wide enough gap to get at it...?

Otiak conjures forth a green glowing serpent with his magic and sends it into the water, crawling up the golem's leg. Mileena attacks the crystalline figure from behind as the snake crawls into the hole. Once inside, Otiak unleashes more of his magical power and causes it to expand and explode from within, breaking the crystals.

For a brief moment, the ghost is exposed! Now is his chance!

Otiak puts his hands together and summons a force ball, sending it flying towards the spirit. The ghost reaches out and tries to expand, regaining control over the crystals, but Otiak uses his power to enshroud the spirit and trap him, eventually forcing him into the ball itself. The spirit's howling ceases when Otiak destroys the Force ball, scattering the ghost.

Mileena picks herself up. "Is it gone?"

"For now," Otiak replies. "I damaged his spirit but he'll pull himself back together. I can sense his power remaining, but he is weakened. We can leave."

The two of them pick up the pace and reach the end of the cavern before anything else can come after them. They step out into the light and find the sun rising, casting its light beneath red clouds in the sky. The corruption of Shinnok's influence has not yet reached these lands, making passage safer.

"This way," Mileena says, urging him to follow. The two of them make their way down an old and forgotten path that leads towards a large castle-like structure in the distance.

"Is that...?" Otiak asks.

"Yes, King Jerrod's ancient castle and temple. We must hurry and hope that the others are within!"

As the two of them run through the fields, Otiak slightly limping from his wound, they find themselves crossing a stream using an old bridge.

There is a foggy mist up ahead, with a large figure walking towards them with something hefted over his shoulder. He looks to be at least twice the size of a man.

Otiak immediately dives into some nearby bushes and tries to take Mileena with him, but she stands her ground. The figure emerges from the fog and walks up to the bridge she stands in front of, stopping several yards from her.

He is a giant ape with brown-orange fur and large muscular arms, wearing simple travel clothing that makes him look a bit like a wandering monk. He carries a massive weapon over one shoulder, a veritable log turned into a club with metal heads. He looks down at Mileena with a gruff expression and a thick gaze beneath a heavy, annoyed brow.

"You lost, little girl?"

"You'd do best to change your tone," Mileena replies. "I am Princess Mileena."

"Heard of you," he replies with a nod of his head, "back when we were in Outworld. Heard you helped bring Edenia back."

He takes the club off his shoulder and sets it onto the ground at his side, holding it up like a post.

"I liked Outworld," he says.

"By order of the royal family, grant me passage and stand aside," she orders him.

"The royal family doesn't rule lands south of the mountains," he replies, halfway between casual and threatening. "And besides, from the looks of things up north, they're dealing with something else, so I don't see any authority on your part. How about: you move."

Mileena's eyes narrow as she looks at the ape-man and slowly takes out her sai.

Otiak immediately emerges from the bushes and holds up his hands. "Okay, hold on you two, is this really necessary? There are much bigger things going on right now than a simple disagreement."

They both look at him as he continues, "Look, we both want to go the other way, can't we just walk around each other and go on our merry paths? I mean, there's an invasion going on and Shinnok is trying to take over the realm, and that includes these lands," he points out to the ape-man.

He stands tall and silent for a moment. "I have no love for Shinnok." He holds up a hand. "Go."

Otiak grabs Mileena by the shoulder and walks her around the ape-man, who turns to face them. "If you seek aide, the kingdom to the south may help you."

Mileena turns back. "If they did not help the royal family face Outworld thousands of years ago, why would they help us now?"

"The Monkey King could yet change his mind," the ape-man says, turning to heft his weapon onto his shoulder and walking off.

"Who?" Otiak asks her.

"Just another self-styled ruler of one of the farther kingdoms in Edenia," Mileena replies as they continue along. "Edenia was once a land of many kingdoms, but ours was always the face to other realms. Now that the realm has returned, so too will all of they, in time. Unless we fail."

"We won't fail," Otiak says.

They hurry along the path until they reach the outskirts of the large temple. Once past its walls, Mileena leads them deeper inside.

Within, they are suddenly ambushed and surrounded by Edenian Knights. The purple-armored warriors brandish polearms and swords and demand their surrender.

The knights initially make no move, but then they part to reveal Jade, who walks up with her staff.

She regards both of them with suspicious eyes. Mileena begins to speak. "Jade, I---"

The emerald-clad warrior holds up her staff and cuts her off. "You will be silent, Mileena. Sindel will judge what is to happen to you. But first you must both prove that you are who you say you are."

A reasonable suspicion, Otiak realizes. They did, after all, face two Shang Tsungs recently. That reminds him... he has Liu Kang's soul!

Jade ignores her, rather coldly. "Otiak, tell me something only you would know from our time together."

The Edenian Knights hold up their weapons and let him pass. He stands next to Jade. "Mileena helped me," he says. "We need to---"

Jade nods. "I know. Your path lies away from us and our battle, and the queen understands. I have spoken to her of our time in the Netherrealm and she is prepared to help you get to the next stage of your journey."

Otiak looks back at Mileena as the knights begin marching her further into the temple.

I say that at the beginning of the trial, we ask to start with our testimony. We hand over the gem, and tell them that without her we would be half way to Outworld with Liu Kang's soul, because we found no sign of the Royal Family at the Royal Palace. Even if we wouldn't we would be dead, and show our wounded leg. Tell them to consider this, before judging.
Maybe then go on our way if the trial is too drawn out.

Otiak follows them into the inner chamber of the temple, where Sindel sits upon a throne with Kitana at her side. Asgaarth is here as well, with some of his top-ranking warriors, discussing something with her. All grow silent as Mileena is brought into the room.

Sindel looks at her with a still face, one that betrays no emotion. "Mileena. We are at war, and do not have the time for a complete and proper trial. You stand accused of allowing traitors to attack the palace, an event that directly corresponds to the current invasion we are facing. How do you plead?"

Mileena stands tall and maintains her dignity as she replies, "Guilty."

There are whispers around the room. Kitana looks upon her sister with uncertainty while Sindel attempts to remain impartial. "Speak what you have to say in defense of yourself before I make my judgment."

Mileena hesitates. "I... I admit that I was suspicious of Tanya and Rain. I believed Rain to be connected to Quan Chi's escape. When Tanya and Rain revealed their treachery and drove you from the palace, I was conflicted. I thought Tanya was my friend."

"You should have acted," Jade says, but Sindel holds up a hand.

"Is that all you have to say for yourself?" she asks the hybrid.

"I wanted to help," she replies softly. "I thought that, if I were to stay with them, I could betray them at a key moment and help us win the day."

"Perhaps," Sindel says. "But I agree with my daughter's bodyguard. You should have moved to defend us. I took you in against my better judgment at the behest of my husband; he is not here now."

Mileena's head hangs low. "I know."

Sindel sits back a bit. "Regardless of your intentions, Mileena, action is what matters, and now your true allegiance lies in question. The birdman steps forth and places his arms behind his back. "I have watched Mileena from afar. She has been distant and had difficulty adjusting to her new life. I believe that, with time, she may grow to call Edenia home, and truly dedicate herself to her new family." He turns to the queen. "I advocate that she be given the right to fight alongside us to free Edenia, but afterwards, exile. Not permanently, but for so long as her majesty believes her to have learned her lesson."

"Thank you," Sindel says as Asgaarth steps back. "Kitana."

The princess is silent. "I want to believe her," she admits as she looks at Mileena. "She saved my life once, and I want to believe she would do so again."

Sindel looks at her as Kitana silently contemplates her next words.

"I advocate freedom for my sister," Kitana says, looking Mileena in the eyes. Mileena looks truly moved by her sister's plea.

The captain of the Edenian Knights steps forth. "Imprisonment." He says nothing more.

Jerrod looks at him. "Sindel, since when did you keep the company of saurians?"

"Answer him," Sindel demands.

"Of course not. That mutant tried to kill my daughter."

"Then he's not your Jerrod," Otiak tells her. "He's from an alternate universe."

He secretly curses his fortune---his presence in this room may have drawn the alternate-universe King Jerrod here, distracting from the trial. But to what end?

He scoffs. "This is rediculous. Sindel, our realm is under attack! We must take action, not divide ourselves!"

She hesitates, but then orders the knights to take him into custody. Jerrod reacts violently, bashing them away. "I'll not be taken prisoner by my own men, with my own wife giving the orders! I know not what spell has fallen upon you all, but you must come to your senses!"

Otiak lunges forward and attempts to use a Fog of Confusion upon Jerrod, but the hardy edenian king shrugs it off and brings up a foot to plant it firmly on his chest. The saurian flies back like he had been hit with a truck, knocking over two more Edenian Knights.

"Jerrod, cease!" Sindel orders as she, Jade and Kitana run up to him.

"I will not fight my own family!" he shouts. "But if you are under some spell..."

At that moment, Asgaarth walks up behind him and grabs him by the neck in a paralyzing manuever straight out of Star Trek. Jerrod is still as he and Korbin force his arms behind his back and then onto his knees; he is then put into cuffs. When Asgaarth lets go, Jerrod is fast to voice his objections.

"I will take him to the dungeon," Asgaarth says.

'I need to learn that neck-pinch thing from him sometime,' Otiak thinks to himself.

Everyone is clearly distressed from the appearance of Jerrod. Sindel attempts to compose herself and turns back to Mileena, who looks at her with uncertain expectation.

"I have... weighed my options," she says after sitting back down on the throne. "I have taken the judgment of those around me and have heard your plea. As the queen of Edenia, I lay my judgment upon you."

"I am ready," Mileena says softly.

"I understand, mother," Mileena replies. "I have but one request."

She looks over at Otiak. "It is vital that he be taken to Outworld. I would like this trial to conclude immediately so that his quest can continue."

"That's going to be difficult without their help," Otiak says. "Is there a way to contact the Lin Kuei? Sub-Zero would love to get a chance to fight Shinnok."

"I have sent my fastest scouts to Earthrealm to contact the Lin Kuei, Special Forces and White Lotus Society," she says. "I can only hope they arrive in time."

"I don't suppose there's anyone who could come with me?" Otiak asks.

"Only if you believe you truly need the help," Sindel says. "I need absolutely as many warriors in Edenia as I can. Were your own quest not so dire, I would ask you to remain as well."

"I understand," Otiak says. "What do you know about this 'Monkey King' I heard about on the way here?"

"A person I would not trust with my life. I have had dealings with him in the past. But now we both face a common enemy. I have sent messengers to some of the other kingdoms in Edenia, but Shinnok's invasion comes at a bad time, but I have not yet had a chance to foster stronger relations with the other kingdoms of Edenia. I can only hope that some of them come to help."

Otiak looks at Yorick. "I'll be back for you eventually."

He ignores the rambling skull as he returns to Sindel. "Do you have a staff? I could use a weapon."

"Perhaps I could help," Jade says, stepping up to Otiak. "Here."

She holds out the rod-like metal weapon that extends into a staff at its wielder's command.

"But isn't this kind of your thing?" he asks.

"I have more," she says, reaching nearby to an Edenian Knight who carries another staff; this one does not extend, but is bulkier, with golden ends. "I am practiced in all forms of staff combat. I will use this one, for this is a time of war. Yours is more suited to stealth, as it is easy to conceal. Take good care of it."

"Thank you," Otiak says, taking the rod. He feels the power within; a simple mental command to extend is all that is required for the weapon to shoot up to its full length.

Sindel smiles at Jade as she walks away. "Are you prepared now to travel to Outworld?"

Otiak approaches Mileena, who is speaking with Kitana. The hybrid turns to look at him as he nears and Jade speaks to Kitana, allowing them some privacy.

"I'll be leaving for Outworld now," he says to her.

"I wish you luck on your journey," she replies. She holds one of her arms as she says, "I hope you are successful and all of this goes away."

"When I am, Kaito will return," Otiak says to her softly.

"I know," she says, staring into his eyes. "I know he will. And... I know we cannot speak of it, and I know it will be denied if so, but when we look past words and things that are spoken aloud, I know he can hear me when I say that I will be waiting for him."

Relying on the chance that the entity is still not completely certain of Otiak's true identity, the saurian knows that she is right: they cannot speak of it openly, nor can they express any form of physical intimacy, lest they reveal too much about who he truly is.

Instead, they share a silent moment between each other, and even though he denied it earlier, he knows that she is certain of who he is. She reaches out and takes hold of his hand. They both know it is not truly his hand, but in this moment, the connection between them transcends physical boundaries. The sudden loneliness they both feel at their inability to make any other form of physical connection is powerful, but the resolve it brings them to once more be reunited when this crisis is over is made all the stronger.

"Come back to me," she whispers as she lets go.

Otiak can only nod as he turns around and walks back to Sindel, who is issuing order to Captain Shendu. "I am ready," he tells her.

"Very well," she replies. "I can send you to any location in Outworld, though I cannot know what you will find there. Where do you wish to travel to?"

That's Jade. We rescued fake Jade from Shang Tsung's estate, but we found the real Jade as a brainwashed amazon and never really broke her out of the control. Come to think of it, as Kaito, we never really saw the real Jade in her natural state.

Sindel leads Otiak to another chamber where a teleportation rune has been inscribed upon the ground.

"This will allow us to take you to Outworld," she says. "Where do you wish to travel to?"

"Kotal Kahn's court," Otiak replies.

"Very good, to the city of Z'Unkahrah," Sindel nods. She prepares to cast the spell.

After a few moments of waving her arms and encircling him with purple energy, a portal begins to open behind him. The power of her spell eventually brightens the entire room, but then something goes wrong.

The portal becomes erratic; less stable. Sindel's white eyes open and she tries to warn Otiak. "The magic... something is... interfering!"

As she tries to stop the spell, there is a feedback and she is knocked back with a blast of purple energy. Otiak tries to escape the circle, but cannot get past the energy field that surrounds him.

The portal enlarges and eventually encapsulates him completely, sucking him inside. Otiak finds himself flung across realms, burning and freezing at the same time, where he is dumped several feet above the ground.

He hits the ground hard and picks himself up, looking around. It's Outworld, alright, but he's not where he wanted to be. He's in the wastelands.

Standing up and stretching, he sighs. 'Someone messed with her spell... but who? The entity?'

He looks around and tries to place himself, but cannot.

In the distance, however, he hears the unmistakable sound of a gunshot.

'Erron Black, perhaps?' he thinks to himself.

After a moment, he hears another, and can pinpoint the direction it came from.

It was during the invasion after the whole affair in Shao Kahn's arena. Rescuing Asgaarth, breaking Quna Chi's mind control on Sheeva, get saved by Meat etc.

She thanked us for freeing her, and we told her we met her parents, and now now she got her beauty from her mom. She actually got embarassed. Then we told her her grumpiness must be from her father and she took the joke well.

Otiak hears another gunshot and cloaks himself as he sneaks closer. He peaks over a ridge and sees Erron Black stalking across the wastes of Outworld, aiming at a rock. Behind the rock, having taken cover, is none other than the Earthrealm warrior and shaman, Nightwolf.

They appear to be engaged in battle with each other. Otiak wonders briefly what Nightwolf could be doing here in Outworld when Erron Black fires again, shattering part of the rock.

Nightwolf is already wounded and bleeding at his side. He needs help!

And Otiak would be lying if he said that he didn't want to dish out some payback to that gunslinging son of a bitch...

And Kaito could do way worse than Mileena. Worth a shot anyway. Could backfire, but seeing what Tanya's done, it shouldn't be crazy hard to salvage a friendship even if we did hurt her by accident and weren't dicks about it.

I'm having trouble seeing a downside to at least giving it a shot with Mileena.

Otiak uses his exceptional stealth to sneak up behind Erron Black and point a finger at him, poking it into his head. "Hold it."

Erron looks at him from the corner of his eye. "Reptile? The hell are you doing here? Kotal wanted you back at he palace."

"I'm not--"

Erron suddenly whips around to attack, but Otiak suckerpunches him first. He then falls into a dropkick and knocks Erron's legs out from under him.

Nightwolf takes advantage of the opportunity to leap out and create a glowing green bow and arrow before firing it at the mercenary. Erron rolls away, dodging the arrow.

He fires both guns, one at Otiak and one at Nightwolf, before getting up to cover. Both Otiak and Nightwolf take cover behind separate boulders.

"Don't know who you are, but you don't know who you're messin' with," Erron Black calls out.
