You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

It's a nice day, all things considered. The sun was up, and the sky was crystal blue with not single cloud in sight. The surrounding grass and trees were a vibrant green, and you could even hear the chirping of birds in between the rumblings of Clementine's idling engine.

Perfect day for a duel, you suppose.

Just across from you sat Hess' four legged monstrosity, the Tiger heavy VT. The massive quadruped had to be easily twice the size of your own, and that 88mm cannon looked extremely menacing. Good thing they were only filled with paint rounds. You could see Hess herself standing proudly atop her hatch, hands on her hips and her cap fluttering in the wind.

"Vell, as you can see, our available fighting area vill be whatever you eyes can see!" Hess sweeps her arm around in a long, slow, horizontal arc. "Upon the ringing of the clocktower bell, we shall begin!"

Well, Hess certainly seemed to be enthusiastic about this. Meanwhile, you've been keeping a close eye on your surroundings. Right now, you were standing in the middle of a large, open field. No obstacles, meaning you could use Clementine's superior speed here to its full advantage. But that also meant you wouldn't have a lot of cover. To the right was a large, heavily wooded forest. Home turf, and a larger VT like the Tiger would have trouble navigating, but it would be hard to maintain line of sight and your longer 76mm barrel would equally be hampered. Lastly, there was a small gaggle of buildings, old cottages and barns that were no longer under use and that Hess didn't really mind getting potentially demolished. It was a bit of a compromise between the forest and field, with wider, more predictable lanes to move through, but plenty of buildings to provide cover.

Back up on a nearby hill, you could see Bannon and Parker's VT standing like a sentinel, carefully observing the battle. Hess' house staff also were gathered to watch their master battle as well. Honestly, this felt more like a show to you than a battle...

"So where do we head to?" Tarin asks, tugging at your pant leg. "With our speed, we can determine our battlefield."

"Tarin, head for the village. We'll try to lose her in the alleys." You instruct as you duck back down into the crew compartment and shut the hatch closed.

"Roger that." Tarin nods ass she gets ready, putting her hands firmly on the controls.

Now all you could do was wait.

The minutes and even seconds dragged on tortuously long as you stared at Hess' personal little clocktower, trying to will the hands to move even a tad faster. Across from you, Hess' Tiger continues to idle, as if watching your every move. Finally, the minute hand makes its final tick on the hour, triggering ancient mechanisms that automatically began the process of ringing the heavy bronze bell to signify the passing of the time.

A loud BOOOOOOONG echoes over the field, and immediately, Tarin springs into action. Clementine's legs explode with stored energy as she sprints for the village, too fast for Hess' VT to track. You try to aim your own turret for a shot of opportunity, but the rocking from Clementine's sprint proves to be too much, and you can't get a solid bead on the Tiger before your sight is blocked by a large barn.

"Hmmm, a smart move, I suppose." Hess muses. You can feel the impacts of the Tiger's four feet as it turns around to pursue you. "But there's only so far you can run!"

Let's test how our p2w gold round HVAP does against her armor at range before committing to close range. Ideally, we'd settle this at range instead of being force to disengage from close if things go pear-shaped.

"Tarin, peek us out just enough so we can get a line of fire on her." You say, making sure a fresh shell was loaded. "We'll try to nail her as she makes her approach."

"Roger that." Tarin nods as she rounds Clementine around the barn and behind one of its corners, only edging out just enough to get clearance for the cannon.

Downrange, you can see the Tiger stomping forward slowly but steadily. You weren't sure if a hit would count as a "kill" from this range, but you had to at least try.

You hit the trigger and Clementine's cannon roars, sending a shell downrange straight at the Tiger. However, you only hit the corner of its turret, and you watch as the shell deflects uselessly away, twirling in the air like a discarded toy. The Tiger responds by firing a shot of its own, but being on the move hurts its accuracy. The shell plows right into the barn in front of you, going straight through the walls and out the back, missing the rear edge of Clementine by a handful of meters. THe shock from the cannon is enough to cause the barn to buckle and collapse, covering you in a cloud of dust.

"A good shot, but not good enough!" Hess taunts.

"For you or me?" You ask back, trying to keep her distracted.

"Both!" Hess laughs heartily.

"Repositioning." Tarin announce as Clementine goes into reverse. "We have to try and flank her while she's still in the open."

"No way, you've seen what that cannon can do." You frown. "She gets one good hit in and it's all over. Plus. I get a feeling our shells are going to be no good at range, anyways. At least up close we can even the odds."

"Are you really advocating just charging up to the better armored tank?" Tarin raises a suspicious eyebrow.

"Well, uh." You bite your lip. "Fine, we'll do it your way, then."

"I thought so." Tarin nods as she puts her hand on the throttle. "I'm going to go full speed, but I'm going to try and keep her as steady as I can for you to get a shot. Can you do it?"

"Of course I can?" You boast.

Tarin just gives you another wary eye.

"Okay, I think I can. I'll do my best." You sigh.

"Right. We're going." Tarin warns as she pushes the throttle forward.

Clementine's engines roar and belch black smoke as she lunges forward, her two feet galloping at full speed. Tarin tries to keep the VT moving in a straight line, without turning or running over any obstacles in order to give you the best shot possible.

However, almost inexplicably, Hess' turret is already turned in your direction. Did she anticipate the move? Whatever the reason, Hess's cannon was ready and waiting and it fires at the same time as you do. Clementine rumbles as the shell slams into the side of her thigh, splattering bright red paint all over the hull.

"Aha! That's a leg shot right there!" Hess laughs triumphantly. "All I need to do is hit the other one!"

"Yeah, well, I just need one more good hit on your side." You retort.

"W-wha!?" Hess gasps, not realizing the splotch of blue paint that was already starting to air dry. "Impressive, I didn't even realize!"

"I think I can keep maneuvering for another shot." Tarin grunts as she regains stability.

You fire, but the shot is wild. Instead of a second hit on the side armor as you had intended, your shot is a bit too high and deflects off the front of the Tiger's turret once again. Hess responds with her own shot, and you feel a rumble as the shell hits and actually tears one of the spare fuel cans stowed on Clementine's rear straight off the hull.

"Damnit, no hit!" You scowl.

"No choice, we're falling back." Tarin grunts. "She can't keep it up at this speed for much longer."

With that, you're jolted to the side as Tarin has Clementine pivot rapidly towards the forest, fleeing for the safety of the trees. Fortunately, she manages to breach the treeline before Hess can reload her gun.

"Oho, more hide and seek? You're going to be found eventually..." Hess coos.

"All right, what do we do now?" Tarin asks, turning her head to you.

"We need to find somewhere to hide until our engines can cool down." You grunt. "Our speed is pretty much the only way we can beat her."

"Right." Tarin nods. "If I remember the maps right, there's a few valleys we can go hull down in, conceal ourselves. There's also a waterfall near the river here. If we hole up there, the water can help the engine cool down faster."

"Yeah, except Hess might know that and check there first." You grumble.

"Head for the rocks." You instruct. "The waterfall is too obvious a hiding place. She's sure to check there first."

"Roger that." Tarin nods and Clementine slowly but surely plods her way over to the rocks, crouching down in one small little outcropping that gives you a good hull down position.

With the brief respite, you sigh and lean back in your seat. You check your watch and are surprised that barely thirty minutes have passed.

"So how are the engines looking?" You ask Tarin.

"Cooling, but they're still too hot." Tarin says as she taps on the engine thermometer. "Need a couple of more minutes."

"Yeah, okay. I don't hear the Tiger, so I think we're good for now." You say as you look around through your viewports.

"So, um, Roy, I have a question." Tarin says as she keeps an eye on the engine indicators. "If we do lose..."

"We're not going to lose, Tarin." You assure her.

"If we do lose, are you really going to surrender to Hess just like that?" Tarin gives you a curious eye.

"Well, I did promise her." You say. "What good am I if I go back on my word?"

"True enough." Tarin sighs.

Right then, you hear a distant rumble, punctuated by a number of dull thumps. The signature sign of Hess' Tiger moving through the forest. You seen begin to see trees shake and topple as her heavy VT presumably just walks straight through them. As you had suspected, she was heading for the waterfall, following the river to get there.

"Tarin, is our engine cool yet?" You ask, your body starting to tense in anxiousness. "This is the perfect chance to get the drop on her."

"Not yet." Tarin shakes her head. "If we go now, any high speed moves will for sure knock out the engine."

"Damn." You seethe. If you waited any longer, Hess would for sure realize you weren't at the waterfall and turn around, thus spoiling your chance at an ambush.

"Just let me know when we're good." You grumble as you sit back in you seat, forced to wait.

:Roger that." Tarin says simply.

Like waiting for the duel to begin, the time just seems to crawl by. The sounds of Hess' movements become more distant, before you lost track of it altogether, meaning the both of you were back to the cat and mouse game.

"All right, engines are good." Tarin announces as she hits the ignition, revving up Clementine's engine once again. "Where to now?"

"Get us back into the field, Tarin." You say. It was simply too dangerous to hunt her in the close confines of this forest. "It's time to end this."

"All right." Tarin nods as she turns Clementine back towards the treeline.

All the while, you don't see any sign of Hess, which you suppose is a good thing. Tarin drives Clementine up atop a hill, which gives a rather good overwatch position on the forest. In the distance, you can see trees shaking and tumbling over, signifying Hess' rough position. Unfortunately, it's too far and you don't have enough visibility for an accurate shot, but for now all you need to do is grab her attention. You grasp the trigger and fire a shell, watching it arc through the air and landing into the trees. You load and fire two more shells into the forest, and immediately, you can see the direction of Hess' movements rapidly change, heading towards the field at full speed.

"We've only got one shot at this." Tarin mumbles.

"Yeah, I know." You agree.

"Tarin, maneuver us to the side!" You bark.

"Moving!" Tarin says as she has Clementine strafe across the predicted path of Hess' approach.

You swing your turret in an effort to get a bead on Hess' side armor. However, Hess comes out swinging, her Tiger bounding out, turret already at an angle for a faster aim.

You both fire.

Hess' shell impacts solidly on Clementine's front plate, a sure kill. However, you score your own hit on Hess' side, right over the spot you had previously hit. Both of your VTs just stand there, staring at each other awkwardly.

"Huh... that has never happened before." Hess says, surprised. "I suppose we vill need a tiebreaker."

"I tiebreaker?" You ask, just as you see the command hatch on the Tiger pop open and Hess jump out, a cavalry saber in hand. "If we cannot best each other in our Vertical Tanks, then we shall do so with our blades!"

"Um... okay." You say, unsure of yourself. The only close combat training you've had was in boot camp as well as what little practice you had gotten among the Bretons. On the other hand, you could presume Hess had been training all her life for this situation.

"I could go, if you want." Tarin says, as if reading your hesitation. "She never did specify who to duel, and we're both part of the same crew."

"Be careful out there, Tarin." You say.

"I always am." She assures you as she climbs out of her driver's hatch, drawing her knife as she does so.

"Oho, so the lady driver answers the call?" Hess' grin widens as she watches Tarin approach. "Then shall we end on the first to surrender?"

"Sure, why not." Tarin shrugs and gets into a battle stance. You see her turn her head ever so slightly to glance back at you, silently conveying a query to you.

You give a slight shake of your head, indicating that you want her to play fair, or at least as fair as she can be. Tarin rolls her eyes in annoyance but gives in with a slight nod before returning her attention to Hess.

"Vell then, show me your skills!" Hess laughs.

The next few seconds are blurs of motion. Hess obviously has the reach with her saber, but Tarin, honed by years of wilderness survival, is much faster and more agile. Hess at first manages to keep Tarin away at a good distance with quick, yet controlled swings of her saber. Tarin is able to dodge most of these strikes, but there are a few narrow misses too, with Hess' blade slicing into Tarin's jacket several times.

However, after a few swings, Tarin begins to inuit Hess' attack patterns, and eventually finds her opening. She lunges in and grabs Hess' cape, looping it around her neck into a makeshift noose. She tugs at it, trying to strangle Hess into submission, but the Reiklander girl is a bit too fast, slicing off her own cape with her saber.

"Ha... using my own clothing against me. An interesting tactic." Hess giggles as she undoes her clasp, shrugging off the last few tatters of her cape. She also shrugs off her coat, leaving her with just her shirt and skirt. Tarin follows suit, taking off her now tattered jacket.

"Hey, uh, Roy, don't you think we should step in?" Bannon asks with concern.

"The last thing you want to interrupt is a duel." You point out.

At this point, Hess and Tarin have continued their clash, which has gotten much quicker and ruthless. A swipe of Hess' saber almost effortlessly disarms Tarin, sending the knife flying out of her hands. Tarin returns the favor by lunging forward and grabbing Hess' wrist, forcing her to drop her sword with a painful twist.

Hess responds by slugging Tarin in the face. Tarin replies with a headbutt, causing both girls to fall over onto the grass.

You decide to hold off for now, just to see where this goes. Both girls, now entwined in a mass of flailing limbs, pulled hair, and torn clothes, roll around in the grass as both them try to get into a better position over the other. You see Tarin and Hess trading blows, with numerous punches and scratches at each other, until finally, Tarin manages to get into a position behind Hess and puts her in an armlock.

"Give up." Tarin says simply as Hess struggles.

"N-never!" Hess gasps as she aims a punch at Tarin's cheek which fails to phase her. "I won't give up so easily!"

And you see that familiar flash in Tarin's eyes. The look you've seen her give far too many times, when she thinks there's no other way.

"Hess, listen to her!" You yell.

That seems to grab her attention. Hess' one eye widens before her body finally slackens in defeat. Sensing her surrender, Tarin slowly but carefully releases her hold. You leap off of Clementine and rush over to the two girls.

"Are you two all right?" You ask, taking out your first aid kit.

"Just some scratches and bruises. Nothing too serious." Tarin shrugs, though you see her eye twitch a bit, indicating she was underselling how much pain she was feeling.

"The same." Hess sighs, still sitting on the ground. "I suppose I should accept the fact that no matter how many times I try, I can never win against you..."

"So you concede defeat then." You ask her to confirm.

"Yes, I suppose so." Hess holds her hands forward to mime being handcuffed. "Take me away, do with me what you will..."

Off in the background, you could see Bannon and Parker running over, no doubt to try and see what was going on. You look to Hess, and then to Tarin.

It's only fair if they're going to hand us a suicide mission for not letting Metal Gear stomp on the Tilean Army.

This is going to be a storytime moment for the Tilean VT Corps, isn't it?

"Remember that time Commander Powers was sent on a suicide mission, and came back with an intact Reik heavy VT and a lovely Reik lady on a leash?"

"Hey, we're practically war heroes, and we technically DID fulfill our mission." You say and then point to Hess' Tiger. "Plus we have an intact Tiger. I think that would be enough to tide them over."

"I hope you're right." Tarin frowns right as Bannon and Parker arrive.

"Good job kid, I knew you could do it!" Bannon pants.

"He was scared to death the entire time!" Parker smiles.

"H-hey! I thought we agreed not to mention that to them!" Bannon hisses.

"Oh, did we? I must have forgot!" Parker says with her smile unwavering.

"Why you- well, anyways." Bannon coughs to regain his composure. "All right, let's take Hess into custody, grab her VT, and get the hell out of here before all of Reikland comes down on us."

"Oh hey, Bannon, one more thing." You say as you help Hess back up to her feet. "We're keeping Hess. We're not handing her over to Command or the Bretons."

"Wait, WHAT?!" Bannon nearly goes completely white.

"Hess isn't a bad person, and I don't think it's right that she be used as a political tool." You say, wrapping an arm around Hess and bringing her close to hammer home your point.

"Interesting..." Parker grins. "And you're hoping that using the Tiger as collateral will get Command off your back?"

"Um, yeah." You nod, wondering why you're even surprised Parker already knew that.

"Ooooh, that's a dangerous game you're playing." Parker chuckles. "I suppose we'll have to do a few thing son our end..."

We can say she's a Tilean with incredibly Reiklander parents. And spent years living in Reikland before she joined the Tilean army, hence bilingualism and accent.

And she needs to lose the attitude. Don't act like Hess and it'll help.

"We can just say she's part of our crew, right?" You ask. "Parker, I'm sure you can like, fake some documents or something."

"If Command and Sawyer turn a blind eye, yes." Parker nods. "It's a bit dangerous though. I'd still try to limit her contact with others."

"Hey! Don't speak matters about me as if I'm not here!" Hess pouts.

"Sorry, these are very, VERY complicated matters." Parker apologizes.

"You certainly know how to make things more complicated." Tarin shakes her head.

And somehow, you can't quite come up with a good comeback against that.

Although I do wonder how long this war is going to last. Hess was kinda the last real resistance, right?

So in KanColle, is it gonna be Johnston or Heerman that goes Abyssal and proves that Abyssals are intelligent, thinking beings?

And will you be going with the

>turns evil instantly and forces us to fight her later on in order to try to bring her back to our side

path or the

>slowly but inevitably corrupts her mind such that we have to watch her lose herself more and more and her final days where she's in control of herself are her begging us to make the voices in her head stop telling her to kill us

route?

There's probably a few loose ends to tie up before going onto the SPACE Quest.

How pissed is Tarin about us keeping Hess?

I'm honestly worried that we're driving her away with the rampant Reikfuing.

What is the subtleness?

Also Tarin was rather quiet after the match.

Spiting the other character to win is no way to do things.

I fully support keeping Hess alive, but it seems that Merc's not differentiating between that and setting up to waifu her. And I actually like Tarin as a character enough to worry about her.

COME ON HIDDLESTON HOW ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO INTRODUCE EMOTIONAL TORQUE.

DON'T TRY TO CLAIM THAT THE ABYSSALS ACTUALLY ARE MINDLESS BEASTS, THAT JUST MAKES THEM BORING GENERIC DOOMSDAY ENEMIES. YOU'RE A BETTER WRITER THAN THAT NO MATTER HOW DOGGEDLY YOU STICK TO CLICHES.
>>
>>44421426
It's probably something along the lines of "Who did you think would be more inclined to listen to Roy?" because the duel was over the moment Tarin put Hess into a stranglehold.

Given the circumstances, both women would probably listen to him if he asked them to, but whoever was the first to be told obviously carries more weight in his mind.

The fact that Roy told Hess to listen up, rather than Tarin to stop choking her is significant because of it's implications.

Did Roy not trust Tarin enough to stop when he asked her? Why did Roy trust Hess to listen in this situation?
>>
>>44421703
Well I think asking Tarin to stop will mean we don't trust her.

While with Hess, maybe enforcing/giving advise that it will be a good idea to listen?

Not sure.
>>
>>44421703

That's the kind of shit I was worried about.

However, it could also be seen as which one he thought needed to be corrected - Hess or Tarin.

If we'd told Tarin to stop, that would be calling her out on her actions. Instead, we called Hess out on hers, implying that we saw her as being more 'in the wrong'.
>>
>>44421726

There's also that we told Hess to listen to Tarin, reinforcing Tarin's dominance over Hess, while telling Tarin to stop would have been us exerting our dominance over Tarin and thereby undercutting Tarin's own dominance over Hess.
>>
>>44421726
If you consider the duel to be a metaphor for the whole war, then you can draw an interesting image from it.

>Tilea has Reikland in a stranglehold...
>It's obvious that Tilea has all but won...
>But Reikland won't give up...
>And so, Tilea won't stop choking...
>>
>>44421776
So Tarin wears the pants in the relationship?
