Your name is Finnel Leoric, Captain of the Brass Boys, Head of the Great Company of the Valemen, a mercenary company with a name longer than its history. You’ve been sent across the Narrow Sea by your Lord William Bordain in the hopes of getting him the two things he needs most to survive the coming storms: Gold and Glory.
Until yesterday, your time in Essos had bored you to tears. Endless talks, parties, meetings, parties, ‘discreet inquiries’, and the occasional party to break up the monotony. You were beginning to wonder if your merchant contact had tricked your lord into loaning him an army as a topic to bring up over drinks, but luckily, things are looking different now.
You’ve had your first client, a young woman named Orissa Eranoris, who wanted protection from her rivals. She never made it particularly clear who said rivals were, but within 4 hours of signing a contract, an armed man dragged your merchant contact, Doma Toceri, into your room at the inn.
He now lies bleeding out on the floor before you, as Doma attempts to explain to you how “held at knife-point” means “in no danger” in Essos.

"Explain." you instruct Doma, as a man bleeds in the corner. "He brought you in, with a knife at your back. If that's not 'in danger', you Pentoshi must live very exciting lives. I'd call it 'forward' at the very least."

Your japes have a harder edge to them. You're not in the mood to be judged for stabbing armed men. It's too bloody early for political shenanigans, and you really don't want to face guards in your night clothes.

"He was out of line, of course, but I assure you, scum such as this would never be hired to kill me. No, this is a catspaw."

You blink. "Pretend I don't speak politics, Doma. It's early."

"A...middleman. Someone paid him to ask these things. Someone wished to ask us, but did not wish to be seen asking us. So he asks, and we answer, and he tells them."

"A human messenger raven."

"That description is sufficient, yes."

You grunt. You're unsure if the man can be saved. A sword to the gut is not something most survive...Maybe if you sent for Hiram he could patch the gravelly voiced thug for his master...but it's a long shot, and likely a thankless one.

Bit of a slow night, eh? That's fine. The show must go on, as they say.

You sigh heavily, rubbing sleep from your eyes.

"You could have warned the poor sap. Should we try to save him?"

"It is debatable. Though there is little time to debate. We will seem brutish foreigners if we slay him, but also of firm resolve. Saving him will make us look rash and unfocused."

"I don't really care. Go get Hiram. Try and keep it at least a little discreet.I'll see if I can keep him alive until then."

Luckily your night shirt isn't expensive, you're going to need this fabric.

Going for a mixture.

You tear your shirt, the cotton fraying slightly at the edges.

"Always some fucking thing, ain't it?"

You lean him forward, and wind the cloth around the wound, pressing as you can.

"Some asshole pays you to come talk to me, pissing me off. You get stabbed. Right bitch of a world."

He's pretty pale, his eyes rolling in his face, whether from pain, shock, or blood loss. You give his face a bit of a slap.

"Hey, stay with me. Don't you fucking die on me. Look at me."

The eyes focus slightly.

"Good. You wanna stay alive, you keep awake, okay? Talk to me."

He groans out.

"W-wha?"

"Talk. Keep awake. Talk about your family or something."

"Dead."

"Of course they are," you mutter to yourself, trying to put pressure on the wound. The blood is seeping through, covering your hands. But you've had plenty of blood on your hands. It doesn't bother you much anymore. "Fine, tell me about your employer. They pay you a lot?"

He shakes his head, feebly, mutters something.

"Speak up, man."

"Not enough."

"Course not. Name?"

He looks at you, his eyes distant. This is not looking like a good day to be him. Hell, it's not a good day to be in this fucking room, apparently.

"Baerrinar. Voressa."

Well, that's something.

You're wondering what the hell else you should do to keep him out of the Stranger's hands when Hiram enters the room. He looks at the tableau and sighs. "So soon, Captain?"

"I didn't pick this one."

"I'll do what I can, but the man is likely doomed."

He kneels, laying out a kit, and inspects your ministrations. "Not bad, Captain. A few weeks training on herbs, you could probably serve in my detail."

"Right. Just try and keep him alive. Apparently it's rude to stab the messenger here."

You approach Doma in the doorway.

"What do you know about a Baerrinar Voressa?"

"Voressa Baerrinar, Captain. The name is Lyseni. I will make inquiries."

"Good man," you say, clapping his shoulder.
>>
>>44555083

The look Doma turns on you reminds you that your hands are caked in blood, and Doma is still in the finery he wore the previous night.

"Hey, you brought him here. No deserves to walk away from this happy."

He nods, and walks away.

............................................................

Several hours later, Hiram joins you in the common room. You had left him to tend to the wounded man, and decided that sleep wasn't coming to you that morning. You'd taken to the yard for morning training, and had eaten a meal. For now, you had little else to achieve.

Hiram drops into the chair beside you, clearly exhausted. He orders a mint tea from the innkeeper, and looks at you.

"You don't make it easy, do you, Captain? That man was well and truly stabbed."

"Will he live?" It may not be the most interesting contribution to the conversation, but it's the most pertinent at the moment.

"Aye. Barely. Your ministrations kept him at the brink long enough for me to pull him back. He'll live, though he'll eat naught but broth for some weeks." He smiles with some pride. "We did bloody good work, Finn. A Maester with his chains couldn't have done better."

You nod. At least you weren't going to be a brutish foreigner to these people.

"Good. I get paid to make bodies. Doing it for free would set a bad precedent."

Hiram chuckles as his tea arrives.

"This event reminded me, Finn. I wondered if keeping our men in the city is quite wise. There's precious little room to train, and the locals are always watching us, and no doubt more little 'accidents' like these will pop up. Maybe we should consider finding our own space to be, out of the city's hair. And the city out of ours."

You turn the idea over in your mind. You could see a couple options presenting themselves.

(cont)
>>
>>44555401

You could set up a camp outside the city proper, giving your men and you some fresh air and space to move. IT might make you look a little uncivilized, and could leave you exposed to sudden Dothraki assault, but it could also remind your visitors that you were an ARMY, not some bunch of lounging lordlings looking for a laugh.

Alternatively, you could find a sizable building, perhaps a warehouse by the docks, and turn it into a makeshift barracks and base of operations. It would keep you in the city, for good and for ill, and may serve to legitimize your business.

Your response to Hiram?
>I like the idea. We should consider a camp outside the city limits.
>I like the idea. A base of operations for our own in town would be wise.
>I agree. We should have a simple place of contact, where we can be found, and a larger camp for the men.
>I disagree. Keeping ourselves in the city keeps us connected to the people, and aware to comings and goings.
>In time. For now, let's simply consider something of a watch rotation, to ensure unwelcome guests don't stop by.

Having a base of operations would allow us to also to open up a shop, if we so desire, to wholesale arms, armor and armament from the vale.

Also, means we have to get cozy with the local authorities, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

You nod.

"I agree. We should have a central location in the city where we can be contacted, and to serve as a base of operations, and a larger camp outside the city for the majority of the men. But, we need to discuss it with at least Hefram, and we should probably talk with all the captains before committing. Hell, we should see if we can get enough WORK before we decide to build a shop."

Hiram nods. " Well enough. Though, if we are to establish a base of operations, we may wish to seek other towns. Yes, we can dodge the laws of Braavos with coin and linguistic tricks, but perhaps it would be better to simply set up shop elsewhere. Just because Doma is Pentoshi is not enough to say we must all stay here."

He has a point, and you mull it over in your head. This whole "ceremonial honor guard" business was something of a irritation to deal with...

You had personally recommended Hiram as one of the three Heads of the Company, to ignore his advice may be unwise.

You decide to seek out the other Captains, and get their opinions and thoughts, before bringing it to a full conclave.

Which Captain would you like to visit first?

At Present, Arnalt Ashwood and Lucas Waller are deployed in the aid of your first client. Therefore, your options are
>Rolan Chambers, Captain of Engineers
>Waylar Sental, Captain of Infantry
>Ser Hefram, Captain of Cavalry

(You can definitely consult with all of them, I'd just prefer an order to it.)

Engineers first because they'll have to find a defensible place outside of a city; then cavalry because they'll need to propose one that can be easily defended with cav; and infantry last because they're hard cunts and will really go anywhere.

Well, that was a quick call. Rolan first, and we'll work out the next two over time.

You decide to consult with Rolan Chambers first, your head of engineers. A brash man, with a voice like a drum, and a body like a barrel of beer, Rolan was one of the captains you got along with in a general sense. If nothing else, you will remember the shock on Lord William's face when his precious Bloodsmiths met the power of Rolan's Heavy Catapults head on, and were slammed into the earth. Lord William's terrifying wall of armor was less impressive coated in a thin dusting of flour, though no less impregnable.

Rolan had commandeered a room on the third floor of the inn, with a window overlooking the city. He was often found here, tinkering with some new idea, when he wasn't pushing for the men to get out there and start a war if need be to get some work. He was hungry to show the Essosi the power of his siege equipment, and the skills of his crews.

You rapped lightly on his door, and were greeted by a barked "Come on in, then!"

At your entrance, he glances up, and acknowledges your presence.
"Finn, excellent. I just had a thought. I was remembering the look on the Lordship's face when we trounced him in the war games back in the Vale. You remember it?"

"I was thinking of it myself," you say, taking a seat. Rolan's mind was like a runaway boulder. It was better to get out of the way and let it spend itself, rather than trying to redirect it in motion. "What of it?"

"Well, I've no doubt the Lordship, young as he is, was more than happy to get out and stretch his legs, so to speak, with commanding an army. The roar of the charge, the clang, or I guess, clack of the blades, all of it very intoxicating to a young man."

"I agree, but I don't see your point."

"How many lordlings do you think are in Pentos? Rich young men, little sense, deep wallets? How many THINK they'd make a fine commander, given a fair shot? How many would be willing to pay for the shot, and how many would pay to WATCH IT?"

This last bit he cried in triumph, slamming a paper on the table. It appeared to be some sort of tourney grounds, but the size of them seemed overly large...

"War games, Finn. We charge these little Lordlings and miniature magisters a sum, and they can take command of our units for a few hours, leading us in sorties and skirmishes. We can set it up so crowds can gather to watch the events, and charge them! We get other people to pay to watch us train, then we get them to pay to have us use that training! We're getting paid both ways! No one's thought of something like this! We can get other mercenary bands to come, maybe tempt some Dothraki...It's a Tourney of Armies!"

That's...certainly a new idea.

>Response?

No pre-set options this time, figured I keep info-dumping on you guys, I need to give you some room to add to the narrative.

You look at Rolan, your face grim and set. "That is the most insane thing I've ever heard, Rolan. It's irresponsible, egotistical, and prohibitively expensive."

He rears back at your sharp tone. "Well, FInn, I-"

"I think it'll work like a dream." He looks at your face to see you beaming, laughter vibrating your words. "Irresponsible, egotistical, and expensive is practically the Pentoshi lifestyle! I mean, we'll have to see if it's even legal in these parts, but I'm for it. The other captains might be a little harder to sway, but if it's fair play, I say we do it. Though, to keep our edge on the field, we may want to make sure that only outsiders command the troops when people can see us. No need to spill our secrets, eh?"

Rolan's accompanying laugh shakes some dust from the rafters. "Well said, Finn, well said! Aye, the plan's naught but a seed at the moment. We'll have to tend the little thing if we want it to grow!"

You and he have a laugh for a bit at the brief prank you pulled on him, before he settles down.

"Now, what was it you came knocking about, Finn?"

You lay out the discussion you and Hiram had, of moving out of the inns and alleys of the city to a semi-permanent camp, and a base of operations for prospective clients. He nods along as you speak, waiting for you to complete the proposition.

"I'm for it, with a couple points of attention. We'll need some kind of rotation of who's in the city, who's at the camp, and who's doing what at each, but that's general camp decorum. Mainly, I think we'd need to structure a system of which units or squads are on-duty, off-duty, and in training." He talks while loading a pipe with some Essosi smoking-herb. "Further, if we're to have a place in the city, I'd want to have a workshop in it. If we repurpose some old warehouse, we could split it between a workshop, office, and weapon vendor's. "

(cont)
>>
>>44556783

You nod, and point out that, as the head engineer, you'd want his eyes to pick out the camp location, to maximize space, comfort, and a strong defensible position.

"True. Lucky there's so much more land on this continent, I can likely find something within a few miles of the city. If not, my boys can probably build it!"

You leave Rolan in a fairly good mood. His idea was crazy, but the kind of crazy you felt William would like to hear, and the kind you felt pulled gold to it like iron to a lodestone.

I'll take this one since it got the votes first. (We'll get to Waylar in a bit.)

You seek out the Captain of the Cavalry, Third Head of the Great Company of the Valemen...by the Seven, your name is a mouthful. Your men had come to call it the "Grey Company" for short. You could have enforced respect for the name your Lordship picked, but in your experience, most soldiers didn't care about a thing if it took too long to explain.

Hefram was one of the few members of your group to be an anointed knight. He also made you a touch uneasy. Nothing against the man himself, but you were a battle-brother of his predecessor, Ser Donnal Clamon. But William had made him a Knightly House, and signed him as a bannerman. You suspected it was something of guilt on William's part, between the child-murder and Donnal's wounding at the Tourney. Was Donnal made a banner before his wounding? Your memory was unclear. Politics was not your forté, and you were glad it was Donnal, not you, managing a house, however small.

But Hefram was merely untested to you. You and Donnal had been companions for at least five years. You'd known Hefram for roughly one. Maybe more. You sighed. William's constant shenanigans had made the last few years a great jumble. Rousing from his stupor to crush the Hill Tribes, then get engaged, then a wedding where almost every Great House in Westeros attended? A parade of the Vale, a pregnancy...It was all so much. You were glad to be out in the field again, where the only important time markers were "battle won" and "battle lost".

None of which had anything to do with Ser Hefram. And that was the core of your distrust of him, such as it was: he was forgettable. Kind, surely. Polite, to a fault. Patient, and just, and everything a knight of the Seven should be. And nothing of interest. You had thought Donnal was replaced by Ser Micah, the knight whose family hailed from the Summer Islands for months.

At least Micah's dark skin made him distinctive. Hefram was a quiet, motivated man, with a direct attitude, and a face made for gambling. Emotions didn't venture there. His thoughts and feelings were his own.

You could never tell if he liked you, when you got down to it.

You found him tending to his kit and gear, scrubbing the leather of his saddle with a distant look, his lips mumbling something.

"Hefram, can we speak?" You inquired, hoping he had some reason to refuse.

"Certainly, Captain Leoric." You winced inside. Not even Arnalt used your last name. You were Finn or Finnel to every man in the company except Hefram. "Let me finish my ministrations, and I will join you in a moment."

You watched silently as he scrubbed to a seam in the leather, then wiped the leather down, before hanging the entire saddle on the stable divider. It was clear he was going to return and finish the saddle after your discussion, and wanted to know precisely where he had left off. He turned and crossed to you.

"How can I help?"

You quickly laid out the basics of the idea presented by Hiram: A camp beyond the city, with a central building within, to keep the men sharp and fresh.

"Hiram is a wise man, and you were as well, to pick him for his duties. Such a home would help discipline in the ranks, and no doubt serve to help focus the minds of our men to remember who and how they serve."

You were unsure if he meant William, or the Gods, and didn't want clarity. You suggested, as he seemed to like the idea, that he discuss what his cavalry would need from such a camp with Rolan, before excusing yourself. You peeked back into the stables a minute later, to see his focus back on the saddle, his hands working the next section clean and smooth, his lips once again mumbling.

Unnerved by your interactions with Hefram, you decided to visit your dark mirror next.

Waylar Sental was viewed by many, you knew, as a grim man. A worrying man. Where you and your unit, the Brass Boys, were a shining beacon on the battlefield, Waylar's Stone Sons were frequently overlooked, often to the enemy's loss.

You and Waylar had been friends and boon companions for near a decade now, his dark humor and features a striking contrast to your golden locks and easy smile.

You knew he could be relied on in any circumstance. He might sneer and deride the idea of serving as a simple guard in the command tent, but once in position, he would watch vigilantly and carefully for half a day without rest. He might insult the hill he was instructed to claim as "barely a dungheap" and beneath him, but his unit would stomp their way to the top of it, and not move if the Hammer of the Smith himself fell on them.

You had heard that some of the men thought he was a pain-rider, exacting pleasure from his own suffering, but you knew different. Waylar's joy was in his strength, and power. When he laughed as a bottle broke over his head, it was at the bottle's weakness, not at his own blood. Waylar liked to watch the world try to cut him down, and laugh when the shears blunted.

You found him scraping his armor with gritted paper, to dull its shine. Other soldiers may have liked their armors to gleam, to show their devotion in cleaning it. Waylar liked to let them draw the arrow fire.

"So, the Head man himself wants a word," he said, having glanced at you when you came in. "Give me a minute, and I'll be done here. What brings you by?"

>Response?

Waylar is your closest compatriot on this continent, perfectly accepting of your temperament. Say whatever you want.
>>
>>44557508
Yep I wanted to make the round won the peons and your the last stop. No seriously I need my mail cleaned could you get on that?

Bring up Hiram's idea and the mad engineers plan.
>>
>>44557508
"Thinking we need to clear the men out of the city, for the most part. Keep a place somewhere in town, nice for the clients, but move the rest out to a camp beyond the walls. Came to get your thoughts on the matter."
>>

"I was making the rounds among the peons, and had you as my last stop. My mail is in serious need of cleaning, could you get on that? I apparently left my squire in Westeros."

Waylar snorts. "You didn't leave him, he ran off in the night claiming you tried to show him your "Little Lion". If you go around losing your things, I'm not getting you new ones."

"Are you sure? I could use a new messenger. I ran one through this morning."

Waylar pauses, sets the gritted paper down, and turns, rubbing his hands with a buffing cloth. His face is incredulous and interested. "Really? Where'd you find a messenger?"

"Burst into my room before dawn with Doma at knifepoint."

"Hmm. That does sound like someone who needed to be stabbed."

" So I thought, but apparently, it's a thing they do here in Essos. Armed thugs are the equivalent of buying a fellow a pint."

"How charming. We'll be the most generous rakes in the city within a week. We've enough armed thugs to dry up a tavern."

"Hiram patched the poor bastard up, but he pointed out if we didn't want to keep stabbing locals, maybe we should stop being near them with swords. Thinks we should clear most of the men out of the city, set up a camp and train their. Keep a little storefront in town for people to find us, but create a little separation."

Waylar grunts. "You won't be popular, that's for sure. Telling a man he's gotta give up the comforts of Pentos for military camp isn't something most men take to cheerfully."

"Yeah, but do we want the men cheerful, or competent?"

"Fair point."

"So, do you support it?"

"It's a good idea, sure. But I say that in the hopes I get storefront duty."

"You want some fun duties, listen to what Rolan thought of: We let Pentoshi command our units in war games, and let people watch them."

"Why in the Seven Hells would we do that?"

"We make both groups pay."

"Oh. I like that idea. But how're we going to make them pay to see things?"

(cont)
>>
>>44557870
Have them bet on the outcome of course: House always wins
>>
>>44557870

You spend some time explaining the finer points of Rolan's idea to him, and he seems generally for it. He's also generally for the camp. Assuming you're for it.

That was one of the downsides of Waylar. He wasn't particularly motivated. He was great at reacting to things, not so great at doing them himself. If you said you wanted to sail home right now, leaving the army behind you, he'd say "Well, William'll probably be real pissed, but if you're certain, let's see how mad he gets."

Still, it seemed the captains were generally supportive of the idea of a camp outside the city, and Rolan's idea might provide something in the way of entertainment to keep the men in the camp from getting too disgruntled.

You returned to your room to find the bloodstains sanded and less noticable, though the air was still sharp with blood and lye. It appears a trio of notes was left for you.

Hiram left a note saying the man had woken, and wished to see you.

Doma had left a note, saying he had news of the lady.

And Voressa Baerrinar had sent a letter, asking for your appearance at her townhouse in a few hours time.

Joy.

Alright, I've noticed the post rate is dropping off a little, and I know many of my posters are in different timezones to me. Would you all like to call things where they are for now, with a better understanding of most of your captains, or you would you like to push on to the next few scenes? My intent was to end in 45 minutes, but there's no problem calling it early and just having some discussion.

Hey now. Doma said the lady's name was Lyseni. So this one wouldn't be Pentos's fault.
>Hiram

It's not far to wear Hiram set the wounded man to recover, he is within the same inn as you, and it is unlikely his meeting will take long.

You find the man drooping in a corner room, his skin still gray and wan, his energy low. He turns his head when you enter.

"You...honor me." He states. "I did not know...if you would come."

"Wouldn't miss it. You're a good listener. Told you not to die, and look at you now."

"You joke. But you...have done much. For me. Pentos, life is cheap. But you...you...you saved mine." The conversation is draining him, you can tell, but a surge of strength invigorates him. "I owe you. Blood. The Black Goat tells us blood is the only true sacrifice. The only worthy gift. You are owed." He slumps back down. "I...shall...pay. Blood for Blood. Life for Life. On the one true God, I swearrrrrrr....."

And he falls asleep.

That wasn't disturbing at all.

>Doma

Brushing off your worries about Bloody Black Goats and life-debts, you find the merchant snacking on sweet-olives and grapes. You note he's changed clothes since you sullied his last set. Or maybe he just slept during the day, and changed when he woke.

"I have made my inquiries," he began, his bald head gleaming in the heat of the season.

"And?"

"The Baerrinars are a powerful family, the heart of a Lyseni conclave, with connections to the Academy of Alchemical Arts."

"Doma, I told you to translate politics speech."

"She is... a princess. Or, perhaps, better said, the daughter of a prince. Her family is rich, powerful, and has many friends who know a great many things about poison."

"See, those are valuable facts. What else?"

"She is said to be beautiful, but this is useless."

"I don't know that I agree."

>>44558322

"Lys is a city of courtesans, whores, and beautiful women. Your Targaryens hunted for wives there for centuries. To say "a beautiful Lyseni" is like... "The blonde Lannister". Useless"

"Ahuh. So if she invites me to dinner...?"

"She will not do this. It is, again, like If you were to be invited to dine with Margaery Tyrell, because you met her knight."

"So I should ignore the invitation."

"If you were to get such a thing, you should not.Would you refuse to dine with a Great House? I do not like these questions. Your eyes tell me I have missed a joke. Is this a Westerosi thing? Are "invitations to dinner" an...innuendo?" It's clear he had to learn that word through trial and error.

Well, that's was the point of the question. You've never had a CHANCE to hide something from Doma until this point. You've been mildly irritated by him, and taken some opportunities to rag on him, and at this juncture, had a chance to indulge your sense of humor at his expense. By refusing it, I get how you guys see Finn and his relationship a little better, so I can make future decisions without your input. Sorry this one seemed too small for you, I assure you, it was important to me.

You slide the note across the table, inviting you to the lady's townhouse that evening. It is titled to "Captain Finn, Master of the Great Company of the Valemen" Doma's eyes widen, and he sets his hands on the table.

"These are deep waters you have entered, Captain Finn. You must be careful. The Lyseni do not believe in training armies. They rely on mercenaries to wage their wars. This lady could be a opening for a great market, or a rival we did not see coming. You must try and avoid offense. You must weigh your every word to her, do you hear me?"

"I hear you, Doma. But you needn't worry. You'll be there to patch things over."

"I dare not, Captain Finn. I have...history with the Lyseni. It is not impossible this is some sort of trap to snatch me up and deliver me to my enemies. Further, note hear." He points his finger to a section of the note. "I invite you to dine aysola", she says. This is "privately". To bring any beyond a personal guard would be an insult. The note calls you "Master", a credit of respect. You would seem callous, rude, and paranoid if any notable ones came with you. You shall have to brave this challenge alone."

This is why you hate politics.

Alyssa slapping Brynden across the face for putting a move on her when ?
>>
>>44559010
Oh, yeah! I meant to bring that up.

Last thread, someone asked how I felt Brynden and Bordain would get along, and I said I didn't know, I'd have to read through the quest.

Having gotten all the way through, my thoughts:

It would depend a lot on context, of course, but I think, at his core, William would 'get' Brynden, and likely get along with him. One of William's big things he hates is victimization. It's the core of his hatred for Tywin and Robert. If the extent to which Brynden's family has suffered at the implicit understanding of the Baratheons were to be made clear to William, he would be furious, and would likely join forces with Brynden in an assault on Redward's lands.

However, there are a lot of contexts where it would be easy for the two to butt heads or even come to combat. Brynden's attitude is the kind of cockiness that William associates with people like Robert and Oberyn, and it would be easy to imagine the two meeting at the joust or melee, and Brynden's attitude pissing off William, who'd then do something shitty in retaliation, starting a feud between the two.

I think the big thing that would get William's attention in a peaceable meeting is Victus. For all Brynden's bluff demeanor and impulsive anger, he's frequently vulnerable when his son is near. Victus makes Brynden more human, like Alyssa to William. On a good day, those two would make it work. Victus and Alyssa getting along, dragging their brooding Lords with them.

>>
>>44559082
>Brynden's attitude pissing off William, who'd then do something shitty in retaliation, starting a feud between the two.

"Once i am done with you i i think i will be done with your woman aswell. I do hope it is okay we use your tent"

And then William straightup murders Brynden
>>
>>44559101
The downside to that intriguing thought is that Brynden is still a couple years behind Bordain in terms of timelines.

Alternatively, if we wanted to ruin Christmas:

Bordain was aware of it, and was aware of the comparisons between him and Royce. He killed children, and was given a lordship. Royce killed his liege-lord's wife, and kidnapped and raped his daughter for a 'marriage' into power. And they were on the "good side".

Bordain's two-year meltdown was a questioning of the very fabric of society, good, evil, and nobility. If monsters like him and Redward could gain from their deeds, what black sins must line the history books?

>>44559155
One of my favorite things to consider about it is any battle between them is going to run into another issue: Dontos must HATE William. William might be better than Brynden in a one-on-one fight, but is he better than both of them? I don't know.
>>
I also feel it's a situation of
>If William knew the full story of how hard Brynden got dicked over he'd go full-scale war mode to help out
>If William met Brynden casually without knowing his backstory he'd end up wanting to pummel the shit out of him after Brynden says something stupid

Thinking of which, You may be interested to note that I wrote up the various /tg/ houses into a custom faction of the Game of Thrones Card Game.

It's got Karban, Harrock, Bordain, Malroy, and Brachen.

Brachen and Harrock are both a little iffy in terms of theme, but the only major balance note I ran into was that the initial draft of Personal Guard was too good. Otherwise, the deck plays pretty normally.

The cards were:

CHARACTERS
William Bordain
Dustain Karban
Garrette Brachen
Artys Harrock
Brynden Malroy

Ser Dontos Malroy
Goldsong
Oskar Stone
Damien Clawwater

Ranger Regiment
Loyal Advisor
Personal Guard

ATTACHMENTS
Dreadnought Armor

EVENTS
Bloody Reprisals
Anything for Blood
Tournament!

LOCATIONS
Rollan Mines x 2
Tumblestone Coast
Mountain Keep

The faction was built to have connections to every other faction in the game, and play a game of general defense and military strength. I'm currently quite proud of it.

Bordain's extra Agility is paramount in striking first, and William actually has to take care (and spend a DP) to keep out of the Mountain's reach the first round in order to have the best chance of success.

Generally it goes like this
>William wins initiative and Knocks Down the Mountain, since he wears full plate and getting up from being knocked down is a Greater Action if you are wearing heavy armor
>William lands a hit, then spends a DP for an extra lesser action to move out of range
>Mountain wastes his turn getting up
>William knocks him over again and lands another hit
>>
>>44559855
This relys a lot on what optional rules you follow (There are rules for Attacks of Opportunity, but they are optional) and how you read the descriptions of abilities. Knockdown implies you can combine it with a movement, but doesn't explicitly state so for one. It also assumes you can't move while knocked down, which it doesn't actually say: and if you can the Mountain would gladly crawl the 2 feet that William moved to attack him from the ground Mountain vs the Viper style

That's pretty much the only way to kill the Mountain if you get down to it, Oberyn had the right idea but went full retard at the end.
Also, witnessed.
>>
>>44559903
Bordain actually only needs to land 2 hits in order for the Mountain to be too wounded to pierce our Dreadnought Armor, but we simply can't afford to be hit more than once until that point
>>
The big hindrance in my simulations is that I know something that Page doesn't

You can't make more than one attack per round

This makes me wonder how Bobby B would fare if he was still the monster he was before he sat the Iron Throne
>>
>>44560040
He still is, isn't he? It's only been 3 years and he didn't really start letting go until after the Greyjoy Rebellion
>>
>>44560057
Depends, he's been drinking pretty hard, and he was already a heavy drinker. And if you recall the wedding, William remarqued that he let his beard grew to hide his chins.
>>
>>44560104
Huh, I remember him still being a badass at the time of the Greyjoys
>>
>>44558751
The truth behind the woman from Qohor is that I was a combination of tipsy and bored at the time. I feel like that entire subplot was one of the bigger mistakes I made in that quest. Nonetheless, Egen had that theory that she was smuggling corpses due to the death-worshiping nature of the Black Goat's faith.

>>44558761
Great work with Gold and Glory so far and please, don't feel pushed to read the Harrock stuff. It's horrendously dry looking back at it. I'm not good at writing a coherent narrative during late nights and early mornings, which is when that quest was ran. Keep up the great work.
>>
>>44560367
From what I remember of the Ironfaggets Rebellion most of the hard stuff happened at sea , they got pretty much trucked once Ned and Bobby touched ground on their Island.
Unless Bobby pulled a "drive me closer, I want to hit them with my warhammer" I don't think he had much to do while waiting to disembark
>>
>>44560414
OH SHIIIIIIIII look who just came in to say hello.
How's life been treating you? Happy new year and all that, mang.

>>44560414
I wanted to let her go because we decided she wasn't carrying slaves and I literally didn't know what stuff was even illegal enough to smuggle in Westeros other than that(not counting wine that hasn't been taxed of course).
>>
>>44560414
dang, I was super intrigued by the mystery of it. Royce's response was bullshit though
>>
>>44560478
Good and thanks.
>>44560542
That's a fair stance to take. That encounter only became a problem because the majority chose to inform Bronze Yohn of a potential slave trafficker's presence after releasing her and letting her continue with her journey. An awkward middle ground was taken that didn't garner House Harrock any benefit and only served to hinder Lord Artys.

Then again, the alternatives were:
>Choosing to detain a woman accompanied by a score of (potential) Unsullied. You would have probably lost twice their number in the ensuing fight.
>Taking her 'gift' and letting her pass on without informing anyone of her presence. If anyone discovered that you were paid off by someone that could have been a slaver, you would have been in deep shit.

So maybe the middle ground was best.
>>
>>44560686
It was more of a "prevent catastrophe" then "what's best on average for the House"

I still felt Royce was overly harsh with us, but that might have been Egen pissing him off.
>>
>>44561123
My style of running quests tends to be 'present the illusion of challenge and adversity at all times.' Sometimes that veers into the extremes of bullshit punishments and ridiculous events that you just can't win.
>>
>>44559272
>I might write up some stuff on my own, either to present him, or as a little winking nod for you guys.

Once my situation stabilizes, I might be inclined to do the same. We'll see what happens. No promises. I definitely agree with your interpretations of how the Lords would interact, spot on.

IN my defense, Knock-Off Game of Thrones Quest was the first quest I've ever run, and the first time I needed to archive things.

Also, there's a couple where I didn't archive, so someone else took over. And sup/tg/ hates one specific thread for some reason, throwing it in the wrong month.

Let me rub sleep from my eyes, and I'll respond to other points.
>>
>>44563727
The first principle is one that gets overlooked too often: Make sure to make it at least somewhat for you. If you're not enjoying writing the quest, you won't want to do it, and it'll sputter and die.

Second, have something that approaches reliability. Both in schedule, and in style. One of the reasons people still post in these style of threads is because my posts were much more reliable back when my life was less cluttered. Th original Knock-Off Game of Thrones Quest was run once a day for nine days. It was meant to be a one-shot.

Do as much as you can while you can. Look at Totemist Quest, one of my personal favorites: Diarca shows up for 3 months or so, posts once a week, and then doesn't post for another 6-9. But the consistency and quality of his threads when he is present keeps us hooked.

Next, find an interesting part of the world. This ties back into the "Make it for you" theme.

If you look at the most successful quests, they all have a facet of the world that's solely theirs. Karban's quest gave us more information about the Reach than the canon does. Mine was an exploration of a young man dealing with the horrors of war and the duties of leadership. Plasma's was a focus on family. Father's was intentionally stacked against the players, and dealing with the idea of Targaryen loyalty in a Baratheon world.

Beyond that, as noted, try your best to write your best. Whether it's clever dialogue, vivid descriptions, emotional poignancy, whatever you're best at describing, lead with it, and work on the others as you go.

>>44560414
>>44561261

It'll be a little while on my write-up, as I'm launching a commercial site in the next few weeks.

That is one downside to modeling fights in the RPG. unless you're exact in which of the many extra rules apply, you have a problem, and some of them are major changes.
>>
>>44559980
Yeah, I made that houserule for the quest a long time ago, because I didn't particularly like that you could conceivably make 3 attacks a turn if you were fighting three people, but only one a turn against one. I may amend it so that successive attacks gain a penalty to at least slightly balance past-me's house rules.

On any given day, Bobby is worse than he was during the Rebellion. But he sobers up moderately for the Greyjoy, and shows he's still a power to be reckoned with, canonically. As I recall, he leads a charge on Pike.

As another note, there's actually several important land battles that decided the Greyjoy Rebellion.

Well, I'll be off to help my friend get a Heroes of teh Storm achievement. I'll pop in every half hour or so.
>>
>>44567413
In totally unrelated topics: I'm still really hyped for the Rebellion, and I'm also loving G&G's way of "passing the time" and advancing the clock. You're doing really well with the quest in general is my point
>>
>>44567413
Woah, there are land battles that decided that rebellion? Is there a list somewhere?

So yeah. Lots of stuff to do for people who doesnt do well on sea. I imagine William and/or Brynden would probably fight at Seagard since that is on the mainland and closer for both of them
>>
>>44571581
Well Brynden's whole shtick is being a master archer, right? I imagine he'll be pretty useful during the naval battles.

Lord William "Please drown me" Bordain less so
>>
>>44571518

Place your bets now: What number into the breach will William be? We ain't gonna be number one cause Thoros of Myr is fucking crazy, but do you think we can edge out the J-bear for the number two spot? Or are we gonna be third through the breach like a bitch?
>>
>>44571649
>Well Brynden's whole shtick is being a master archer, right? I imagine he'll be pretty useful during the naval battles.

Naval warfare is a very different from land. So i wouldnt be so sure.

And yeah that Dread armor, i have my doubts that it would be useful on a ship. Might aswell scratch "sleeping with the fishes" on it if he wore it at sea
>>
>Siege of Pyke

Well during the naval battle in Karban we suited up in heavy armor and waited below deck for us to land, basically like pic related while our less-armored buddies handled the naval part

A landing is a bit more different than a naval battle. If that is the case we would not be part of the naval battle itself but sit outside til a breachead has been established.

The man is a madman. One way one can compete with that.
>>
>>44572483
We're not going to out-crazy Thoros of fucking Myr, that's just not in the cards.
>>
>>44571691
Thoros was the 1st man into the breach. William was the man who breached the wall, Kool aid style
>>
>>44572573
>>44571691

I mean let's be honest people, we're slow as molasses, we won't be in the competition by virtue of not being able to CHARGE! fast enough.

We sprint at the same speed normal people walk. Our mastery of Iron turns our Dreadnought armor from "fuck no you can't move in that thing" to "really slow, but still moving" not "normal speed"
>>
>>44571904
I can see William and Stannis grinding their teeth into powder: one because he can't show the Ironborns why Iron masters all, the other because the former is on his way to win the number one spot in the teeth grinding competition
>>
>>44572635
I could almost see it, if only because William's Dreadnought Armor makes him very difficult to injure with arrows.

It would be more of a "Let me show them a Man of Iron, Robert.", followed by tanking a hundred bow shafts, and William laughing.

>>44571581
Seagard is actually one of the surprise attacks for the Ironborn. It's basically the opening volley of the war.

The Storming of Seagard was meant to be your first point of view switch, before I decided to do Glory and Gold.

I still haven't decided if you play Jason Mallister, or Rodrik Greyjoy.
>>
>>44574333
>The Ironborn will have the last laugh when William's ass begins to itch and he cant scratch it
>>
>>44574333

>Just start walking towards Pyke
>Ironborn blot out the sun with arrows
>William just keeps walking, unfazed
>>
>>44575737
>"William, the Ironborn will cut half our army down with arrows before we even reach the walls."
>William walks towards the walls then just stands there for hours as they fire arrows at him
>"Ok, they're out of arrows now,"
>>
>>44575840
By the time he gets there the fighting would be over
>>
>>44575967
We need to make a war chariot for William to ride into battle on. Or just put ourselves in one of the siege weapons and let that fling us into the enemy. Probably wouldn't end badly.
>>
>>44575840
They would launch fire arrows and burn up all his air, not hard.

Well, we've been triggered by Uthor's tabletop mini's so that's a real possibility
